A Minimalist Landmark Framed by Coastal Romant cism Nest ed a ong the v brant promenade of Scarborough Beach, this café b ends minimal st architecture with the poet c charm of the Med terranean coast ine The design s grounded n a contemporary yet contextua approach def ned by stacked rectangu ar masses f at roofl nes and gent y curved arches These elements give the café a dist nct dent ty, wh le respecting the ow-rise, relaxed atmosphere of its seaside setting
Designed to host 40–50 guests, the space s d v ded into two ma n zones: an int mate shaded interior and an expansive terrace fac ng the ndian Ocean. Ful -he ght g azed pane s and del cately arched open ngs create a seam ess v sua and spatia connect on between ins de and out flood ng the nter or with natural l ght and coastal breeze throughout the day
A key feature of the pro ect s its comm tment to bespoke craftsmansh p Every furniture piece nclud ng the dining tab es chairs and service counter was custom-des gned to match the arch tecture s tone and rhythm Th s e im nated the need for off-the-shelf so ut ons a lowing for improved ergonomics consistency n design anguage, and a tacti e handcrafted qua ity throughout
The mater al pa ette echoes the surrounding andscape: raw concrete l ght-toned t mber brushed meta , and natural stone come together to evoke a sun-washed textura Mediterranean amb ance
Technical y the pro ect was deve oped entirely in Autodesk Rev t a lowing deta led coordinat on of structura and spatial systems from concept to documentation Complex ntersections between curved open ngs and rect inear volumes were reso ved through parametr c model ng and sect on-based detai ing Light ng s mu ations and atmosphere studies were conducted using Lum on, a ding n materia se ection and ensur ng accurate render ngs that reflect the intended mood and spatial exper ence

Bach Dang Quay, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Dong Café is a conceptual design proposa envis oned for the symbol c Bach Dang Wharf one of the most vital publ c r verfront zones n the heart of Ho Chi M nh City. Positioned along the Sa gon River promenade and directly connected to the c ty s cruise term nal and Nguyen Hue pedestrian bou evard, the pro ect addresses both h gh commercia demand and a civic amb t on: to create a place where arch tecture reconnects peop e to the water and to one another
From a techn cal standpoint, the café employs a custom-designed faceted roof structure integrating multi ayer waterproof membranes and concea ed drainage systems crucial for resil ence in Vietnam’s tropical monsoon climate. A proposed ightwe ght steel frame enables precise construction of angular geometries while reduc ng structural oad along the waterfront The design a so cons ders passive cooling and cross-ventilation to minimize energy use in a high-humidity environment.
The arch tectura anguage is rooted in an expressive interp ay of triangular volumes bo d, asymmetr cal and visua ly commanding Desp te their forma complexity, the spatial layout s intent onal y stream ined to ensure clarity n circu at on, operational effic ency and unobstructed panoram c v ews of the river Every angle cut, and edge is cal brated for both scu ptura expression and funct onal performance
The phys cal mode was fully handcrafted within four days without the use of CNC mach nery or digital fabrication tools. Its completion demonstrates high- eve craftsmanship in rapid prototyping, material manipulation, and spatial resolution part cu arly in handling sharp geometries and complex intersections by hand.
Dong Café is more than a café t is a spatial exper ment a symbo ic urban marker, and a crafted response to context Through form c imate respons veness, and human-centered intent, it seeks to become a meaningfu node at one of Saigon’s most historic and evo ving frontiers.
