NOVEMBER 2015

urekss Ltd. has installed a new log yard with new measuring and log transport devices for optimal log bin sorting at its sawmill in west Lativa. The installation went on stream successfully by the end of August after a few months of mounting and installing. The Latvian sawmill operation was looking for the right partner to fulfill all the technical requirements for upgrading its production site. During the Ligna 2013 show in Hannover, Germany, Kurekss personnel approached Springer and Microtec representatives, and after many discussions, the deal was made and resulted in an installation and startup of the whole log yard. In cooperation with long-time partner, Springer, Microtec provided log scanning and control devices. Microtec delivered a Logeye 302 multi-sensor scanner for measuring the volume of the logs under bark. The two x-ray projections also recognize the quantity of knots and their characteristics. It includes Winlog sorting optimization that records all log input information and processes the measuring data in real time into valuable information for optimized sorting, data handling and storage to increase efficiency in the sorting line. “We were very impressed by the development of the project,” states Janis Apsitis, managing director and chairman of the board at Kurekss SIA. “We are proud to have had Springer and Microtec as our partners and we are looking forward to further cooperation.” This is the first time that a new generation Logeye 302 detection unit was installed in a log yard. The modular built Logeye 302 features new generation technology in each module, such as the x-ray unit for knot detection and detection of metal fragments. The x-ray unit is based on the acquisition of two x-ray images that the system then analyzes for the detection of wood defects. The system evaluates the log diameter under bark and the diameter on bark with the new 3D shape measurement system. “The new generation of Logeye 300 gives you insights into your logs to finetune your production mix according to your prioritis while optimizing lumber recovery in terms of quality and resale value,” states Microtec CEO Federico Giudiceandrea.
