For some, there’s nothing better than retirement, but when Eddie Lee’s wife, Iris, joins him in retirement, the truth about his “ladies’ man” ways resurfaces. To avoid her, Eddie retreats to the sanctuary of McDonald’s, where coffee refills are free and the rest of his retired friends, with marital problems of their own, wait faithfully for him. When a mystery woman moves in the abandoned house down the street, with her Creole’ wiles, melt in your mouth coconut cake, and medicine cabinet secrets, Eddie is not the only one who pays her a visit; a visit that threatens to change all their lives forever.
Melda Beaty earned a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a M.A. in English/Writing at Illinois State University. She is a tenured professor at Olive-Harvey College. Her business, MeldaCreates, Inc. provides creative writing and writing consulting services. In her spare time, Melda enjoys cardio and strength training, bike riding, live theater, concerts, reading, and listening to NPR. Her first play, Front Porch Society, delves into the complex and connected lives of four elderly black women in rural Mississippi Delta on the eve of the 2008 presidential election. The play enjoyed a world premiere at The Ensemble Theatre in Houston, TX May 11-June 4, 2017 to rave reviews. Her second play, Coconut Cake was accepted into the New Works Reader's Series at 2017 NBTF (National Black Theatre Festival) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Between sips and laughter, we dreamt out loud One of our shared dreams was to premiereaplaythatmighthavethelegstowalkitswaytoBroadway.Inthespanofour timetogether, wedecidedtobandtogetherto“eatthatelephant”
We ultimately launched this endeavor by commissioning an award-winning Black playwright who will remain nameless to write a play that will remain titleless. The script’s theme, construction, and writing gave the play powerful legs. However, New York-based white producers who will remain nameless swooped in with their bag of magicalmoneydust, sprinkleditoverourelephant, andshrankittothesizeofafield mouse, which they walked off within their pocket.
