In 2022, the world was trying to find its footing after nearly two years of being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, Broadway theatres were re-opening with an olive branch extended to Black theatre artists. This was largely due to the “We See You White American Theatre Movement,” which was a widespread call-toaction to build anti-racist theatre systems.
Coerced by the driving force of dozens of Black artists and the rumbling of the equity, diversity, and inclusion bandwagon wheels, a number of Black plays opened on Broadway stages. Thoughts of a Colored Man (which is included in this Hattiloo season). Chicken and Biscuits. My mentor, Ruben Santiago Hudson’s one-man show, Lackawana Blues. Passover. And Arthur Miller’s, Death of a Salesman – a play about “the loss of identity and a man's inability to accept change within himselfandsociety”–whichwasstagedwithanall-Blackcast.
Seeing dozens of Black theatre artists on stage and hundreds of Black ticket holders in lines mirroredthenaturalenvironmentatmybelovedMorehouseCollege–thenation'sonlyhistorically black private liberal arts college for men While every school offers some sort of pedagogy, Morehouse focuses just as much on her student’s personal acculturation as their education. Being anexcellentstudentisn’tenoughtochangetheworld, whichiseveryMorehouseMan’scharge.
During my matriculation, I joined many on-campus discussions about the exploitation, fear, violence, misinterpretation, and other matters that affect Black men. One such discussion took overanentireclassperiodofmyStudyofWorldDramacourse.
The topic – appropriation or appreciation of Black culture. The question – do white arts organizations produce Black art because they appreciate and connect to its themes, or because they want to be viewed as culturally diverse, while making money? My perspective – relevant, being that I had produced plays written by white playwrights which are, on the surface, about whitepeople.
I produced Neil Simon’s Last of the Red-hot Lovers in Hattiloo’s first season. I went on to produce Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire (Season four), Moliere’s Tartuffe (Season Five), and I threw in a couple of Shakespeare’s plays for good measure Truth be told, I selected these shows with the goal of selling tickets to white theatergoers, as well as to those Black theatergoers who would validate Hattiloo only if it was validated by white theatregoers, so, my effort was a twofer I was unabashedly appropriating white plays so as to have the means to produce plays written by Black notable playwrights that included August Wilson, Susan-Lori Parks, and Lydia Diamond.AppropriationwasatoolthathelpedmeintroduceHattilootoacitywithapoorrecordof nurturingBlackartsorganizations.
However, in retrospect, I realize that, on some deeper level, I selected these plays because each of them had themes that mirrored the general Black experience. I did this in keeping with my belief that Black people are not a monolith. I realize that I, just like Broadway actor Wendell Pierce, hadagoodbitincommonwithArthurMiller’sWillyLomancharacter–amansuffering“the lossof[his]identity…”
The Eurocentric teaching that I and millions of other Black youths received from elementary to high school whitewashed my perspective of what it meant and means to be Black. I “lost my identity” within the paradigm of white supremacy, in light of the fact that only the Black folk who were highlighted during Black history month were worthy of notice and study. While Manifest Destiny and a historical foundation of servitude endowed white men with the credit of industrial progress, widespread cultural enrichment, and the practice of social grace. Consequently, my identitywaslostwithintheshadowofEurocentricdominationandachievement.
Allthesame,unlikeWillieLoman,Iwasabletochangemyself-deprecatingperspective.Indeed,I selected Carmen Jones to open Hattiloo’s eighteenth season because it my Afrocentric perspective Not only is it a musical that demonstrates the artistic prowess of Black performers, but it also exhibits the elegance, emotional complexity, and sometimes adverse passions of Black folk I selected this musical because I appreciate and relate to its themes I am not producing it becauseitwillbroadenouraudienceandsellmoretickets
Now, the question – do white theatres feel a connection to August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, in which a Black man reconnects with his soul in an Atlantic Ocean boneyard composed of Africans who choose death over enslavement? Do they produce gospel and blues musicals as a consequence of some ingrained hope or trauma? Or is Black pain, joy, and triumph being appropriated in the name of a diversity that’s in vogue and, in some cases, tied to funding. Are Blackstoriesmerelythecommodity-of-the-week?
During that Survey of World Drama class, a Morehouse brother defined appropriation as white supremacy stealing a Black person’s shirt and then turning around and demanding that the Black person buy back that same said shirt. By selecting plays that exhibit the humanity of Black people that’s sometimes put into question, I am holding on to our shirt, refusing to sell it; and refusing to lendit, unlessyouagreetowearitsbloodyripsthatevidencethestrugglethatBlackfolkhaveand continuetoendure.
