letter from the head of school In a matter of weeks, another fabulous crowd of Hathaway Brown students will cross the threshold to become Hathaway Brown alumnae. With that designation, they’ll join the procession of thousands of talented, compassionate and powerful women who have made and continue to make a disproportionately large impact on the world. I’m already anticipating the pride we on the faculty will feel on that graduation day in June.

And yet, as the cover story of this issue of HB illustrates, our work as a school cannot be – and truly is not – limited to the ways in which we shape the lives of our students. The article asks us to consider what’s at stake in the debate over education in America. The answers are many, but I suppose the easy one is that the future is what’s at stake – the future of Lucy ’25, pictured on the cover, our own futures, the future of our democracy.

Whether we realize it or not, we’re risking it all.

As you know, this fall, we held our inaugural Education Innovation Summit. It received rave reviews. One attendee called it, “the conference of the year, if not the decade.” It certainly was gratifying to hear such praise, but what meant the most was witnessing how the 600 attendees waded into the stormy waters that get whipped up whenever the future of education is discussed. I was very proud to see HB teachers in the middle of it all, talking about innovative approaches and discussing the ways schools need to change so they can prepare students for their futures, not their teachers’ pasts.

The story on page 14 captures the spirit and the stakes of the Summit quite well. I’m also excited to share a piece written by a young alumna, Amy Strieter ’03, who was known as a very talented writer during her days at HB. We asked her to come back to school so she could take stock of her own experiences as a writer and those of the girls who have followed her. It’s a fascinating bit of detective work and a good read.

This issue has many other highlights. It also features a cleaner design and some other visual changes that we hope make reading HB even more enjoyable. We’re very interested in hearing your reactions to the design and the content of this issue. We’d also love to hear suggestions of topics and stories that you’d like to read in future editions. In the year that they were 1st Preps, Dr. Jonas Salk discovered the cure for Infantile Paralysis. He began inoculating and saving the lives of countless children with his vaccine. This is also the year that Sen. Joseph McCarthy conducted nationally televised inquiries into alleged infiltration of communism into society – to the ultimate outrage of citizens and the government alike. What is the year? What class?

The class of 1961 in 1954. John F. Kennedy, then a junior senator from Massachusetts, received the Pulitzer Prize for his book Profiles in Courage that same year. Most people never would have dreamed that they would someday be able to read the classic memoir on a Kindle.

In 1957, then 3rd Preps, these same young women listened to their parents’ astonishment as the first satellite launched into space from Russia. What was the month and day Sputnik launched, and how long did it travel?

October 4, and it traveled for 3 months.

Carrying bouquets tied with their class color of blue, which graduating class embraced the new world before them in this photo? Who was President and what famous service institution was created under his tenure that remains viable today?

The class of 1961, John F. Kennedy was President. The Peace Corps still encourages young people out of college to give a year or two of their time as teachers, advisors or health care workers in Third World countries.

What was the first senior play produced in the new school on North Park Boulevard and when was it staged? If you look closely, you will see floor boards opened to illuminate the stage area.

Four Distinguished Sitting Jurists Share Their Wisdom With HB Upper Schoolers In February, Hathaway Brown was proud to host a panel discussion by distinguished members of the U.S. federal courts system. These influential female judges included HB alumna Judge Benita Y. Pearson ’81 of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio; Judge Alice M. Batchelder of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; Judge Patricia A. Gaughan of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio; and Chief Judge Marilyn SheaStonum of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The discussion was moderated by Clerk of Court Geri M. Smith of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

The jurists shared with the Upper Schoolers their insights into the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Ohio, the law, the role of the courts, and their own personal journeys and career choices. The Center for Global Citizenship, overseen by Joe Vogel, sponsored this presentation as part of its 2010-2011 lecture series.

Dancing Tour de Force This year’s Upper School dance concert, performed in February, featured student and professional work in an awe-inspiring show. Outside In, created at Advanced Company’s August 2010 retreat with guest artist Jennifer Keller from Slippery Rock University, was performed by the 12 students of Advanced Company: Molly Crosby ’11, Erica Epstein ’12, Morell Frankel ’11, Alina Freeman ’13, Danielle Jones ’13, Imaya Jones ’13, Margaret Landefeld ’11, Katie Raber ’11, Jillian Thomas ’12, Imani Tibbs ’11, Mimi Toohey ’12, and Asha Whitfield ’12.

HB Senior Wins 2011 Northeast Ohio Shakespeare Competition Stephanie Wong ’11 took top honors at the 2011 Northeast Ohio Shakespeare Competition, held February 26 at PlayhouseSquare’s Idea Center.

She was one of 30 students from area high schools who showcased their grasp of the Bard’s work by performing scenes from his plays and reciting lines from his sonnets.

Wong, who was joined at the event by HB’s Theatre Director Molly Cornwell, earned the right to represent Cleveland at the National Shakespeare Competition to be held in New York City on May 2.

Celebrating Music

Together with the University School Upper School Orchestra and the Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Band, Hathaway Brown’s Upper School Orchestra presented “Celebrate Music” in March. Talented musicians from all three schools demonstrated their incredible range as they performed selections from The Pirates of the Caribbean to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and plenty in between.

Scholastic Art Awards

HB artists did especially well this year in the Scholastic Art Competition, with 21 works selected for a winter exhibit at the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Reinberger Galleries. Of these, three earned Gold Key awards and three earned Silver Keys. Gold Key pieces will be judged in New York this spring for possible national awards.

Meghan Nicklos from Ohio University premiered her work Embedded in Our Skin, featuring seven students from HB’s dance department, and Howard Washington, from the Cleveland College Preparatory School, collaborated with six students on a hip-hop piece called HB Middle Eastern Style. In addition, students Katie Raber, Imani Tibbs, Margaret Landefeld, Morell Frankel and Erica Epstein premiered their choreography for this year’s concert.

SREP Students Present Research at National Science Conference Four HB Upper School students presented their work in February at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Samantha Reeves ’12 shared information about her research into “Preparation of Shape-Controlled Metal Nanoparticles for Catalytic Studies,” conducted at the CWRU School of Engineering under the mentorship of Dr. Mohan Sankaran.

Claire Ashmead ’12 and Aobo Guo ’11 discussed their work on “The Effect of Solar Exposure on the Atomic Oxygen Erosion of the Hubble Space Telescope BiStem Thermal Shield Aluminized-Teflon FEP,” conducted at NASA Glenn Research Center under the mentorship of Kim de Groh and Bruce Banks.

Margaret Landefeld ’11 presented “The Differential Interaction of FilaminA, RACK1, and CFTR-and-DeltaF-CFTR Expressing Cell Lines,” her research related to cystic fibrosis, conducted at CWRU School of Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. Carole Liedtke.

Prime Art Students Paint Global Mural HB Primary School art students, under the direction of Carol Sphar, are working together with students in Australia and Italy on a global mural.

The international collaboration has been taking place in various forms, on various projects, for the past four years. For a mural, a section of a large canvas is painted by students from one of the partner schools and then shipped to one of the other schools until all three works are completed and each school has one for permanent display.

The most recent mural project is based on the book Brother Eagle, Sister Sky by Susan Jeffers, about the Native American relinquishment of native land in the Northwest. The students in Australia, Italy and here at HB all read the book and then created a design for the murals based on their country’s indigenous people and how they interact with their natural environments. The resulting mural has been on display in the Primary School lobby this winter and will soon be displayed in the Upper School.

Strnad Fellowship Challenges Prejudice

As part of a Strnad Fellowship in Creativity, Morell Frankel ’11, under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Wonderly, has been active in helping people with disabilities. In 2009, she established STAMP (Sealing Together A Memorable Partnership), an initiative designed to dispel myths about disabilities and bring young people together.

In both her junior and senior years of high school, Frankel, with sponsorship from STAMP, has raised funds for charitable organizations and hosted numerous educational events, including one in February that brought motivational speaker Marc Elliot, who has Tourette syndrome, to HB to present “What Makes You Tic.” Elliot addressed the topics of diversity, disability and tolerance by sharing personal stories of living with a disability.

His message was one of acceptance – of oneself and others.

Ohio Through Time Museum Launched The Ohio Through Time Museum, located on the third floor of the Primary School, opened its doors in January. It was created as part of a Storyline project by fourth grade students challenged by Bill Christ and Dr. Evalyn Gates, Director of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, to create a museum with innovative and interactive exhibits to teach other primary school students about prehistoric and historic Native Americans who lived in what is now Ohio.

Students in Mary Boutton’s class worked in pairs for more than four months to research their topic, design an exhibit, present it to a focus group, make revisions, construct the final project, and present it to the school. With the assistance of Nick Pavlak, Boutton’s son, the students also created a logo for the museum and printed T-shirts. Carol Sphar contributed her expertise by guiding the students as they painted a large acrylic-on-canvas mural depicting a Native American surveying his village and surrounding land. Finally, the students animated their exhibits by programming PicoCrickets under the direction of Carole Lechleitner.

The museum taught students from kindergarten through grade 4 many things, including how glaciers shaped the land, how Paleo Indians hunted and survived, how the Archaic discovered atlatls (spear-throwing tools), how the Woodland Tribes learned to farm, how the Hopewell traded throughout what is now the United States, and how the Fort Ancient people protected themselves with stockades.

Gold Key Writing Awards Three Hathaway Brown seniors earned eight Gold Key awards in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing contest for our region. In number of awards, HB was third in Ohio and tied for 18th in the nation. These works will automatically be submitted for national judging.

Sienna Zeilinger ’11 had an especially impressive showing, winning five awards in four different genres − Short Story, Personal Essay/Memoir, Poetry, and Science Fiction/ Fantasy. Stephanie Yu ’11 earned two awards in two genres, Humor and Personal Essay/Memoir. Joyce Guo ’13 won an award in the “Short Short Story” category.

Parents in the Classroom

On a special evening in February, parents were able to step into their daughter’s shoes, sit in her seat and see the Hathaway Brown magic for themselves. Parents attended three 25-minute classes, chosen from 18 offerings by faculty from Primary, Middle and Upper Schools, ranging from China’s One Child Policy to Shakespeare, Our Contemporary. HB held this first-ever Back to School for Grownups to give parents a chance to experience the distinctive, transformative classes that their kids experience every day.

Since 1923, The Awards have recognized some of America’s most talented writers while they were teenagers, including Truman Capote, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Maynard, Sherley Anne Williams, Joyce Carol Oates, and Sylvia Plath.

Seventh grader is finalist in “Stop the Hate” essay contest

Isabella Nilsson ’16 was selected as one of three seventh grade finalists in the “Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out” essay contest sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. This annual contest solicits insight from area students on ways to counter discrimination and prejudice in their communities.

Isabella’s essay was chosen from more than 1,700 entries from students of seven Northeast Ohio counties and will have its final judging in April.

Seventh grade English teacher Sharon Baker has organized the HB contest submissions for the past two years. She has made the essay a required assignment because the topic mirrors the seventh grade theme of social justice.

Baker encourages her students to submit their essays and has had high rates of participation. In 2010, HB student Beki Waterman ’15 won third prize.

Algebra II class presents findings on education

Learning not for school but for life was front and center when Algebra II students delivered a Sustaining Our City presentation in January about school performance indicators. Using data on public school districts within Cuyahoga County, students measured the relationship between a variable such as attendance rates and the percent of students passing the Ohio Graduation Test. The conclusions that students drew from their work became the basis for a lunchtime conversation on education.

Moderated by Upper School Math Department Chair Michael Buescher, the discussion focused not only on the results of the data analysis, but also on what policy recommendations students would make about public education in Ohio.

HB FIRST LEGO League Teams Fare Well in State Tournament

Sixteen young robotics aficionados did a remarkable job representing Hathaway Brown at the FIRST LEGO Ohio state championship in Dayton February 12-13.

Two of three HB FIRST LEGO teams were among the 60 groups that competed: the HB Blazerbots, sixth-grade students coached by Dr. Glenn Looman; and the HB Computer Chip Cookies, fourth- and fifth-graders coached by Carole Lechleitner.

Both HB teams were praised for their careful attention to detail and for their commitment to teamwork and spreading the message of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.)

The Blazerbots brought home a third-place trophy for their project research.

The team finished the season as regional champions as well, taking first place in the regional tournament that was held at HB in December. For the members of the Computer Chip Cookies, who placed second in the regional competition, 2010-2011 was their introduction to the robotics program. And the HB Lazerbolt Bots, a second-year team of fifth and sixth grade students, coached by Morgan Locsei, received the Programming Award.

The theme for this year’s FIRST LEGO challenge was BODY FORWARD. On top of programming their robots to perform a series of tasks, all participants were asked to research a problem and develop an innovative solution. The Blazerbots researched a swallowing disorder called achalasia and earned high marks for their idea for a special esophageal pacemaker. The Computer Chip Cookies researched diabetic retinopathy, proposing a special medicated contact lens to help alleviate the problem of leaking blood vessels in the eye caused by diabetes.

Speech and Debate Team

HB’s Speech and Debate Team, coached by Jason Habig, had its best showing in school history at the OHSSL District tournament in Vermilion February 4-5, 2011.

Prior to the tournament, HB was one of only three schools to prequalify six policy debaters to the state tournament: Alexa Magyari ’11, Nell Patterson ’11, Adriana Zinn ’11, Sarah James ’12, Chloe Williams ’12, Madeleine Barr ’12.

At districts, the team qualified another seven: Megan Porter ’11, Hazel Crampton-Hays ’12, Aly Bryan ’13, Amy Young ’11, Emma Wahl ’13, Stephanie Wong ’11, and Gurbani Kaur ’13. Kaur (pictured below) also was selected to compete in the High School Debate Championship at The City Club of Cleveland on March 18 where she was runner-up.

Faculty News

Molly Cornwell, HB’s Theatre Director and a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, will be performing in a play at Dobama Theatre April 22 - May 15, 2011. Circle Mirror Transformation, written by Annie Baker and directed by Juliette Regnier, follows five people in a community acting class as they come up against one another’s differing expectations and personalities, with humorous results. Upper School Science teacher Sheri Homany served on a team evaluating the science department at The Episcopal School in Philadelphia, PA, as the school conducted an internal review of the department. The goal was to help direct the science department toward adopting innovative curriculum and program initiatives.

Marlene Leber, Upper School Dance teacher, is serving as a facilitator for writing the dance content standards for the Ohio Department of Education; she also has served on the programming committee for the 2011-2012 season for DanceCleveland, the country’s oldest modern dance presentation organization. Leber is facilitating two workshops at the OhioDance Festival in April as well.

In January, Carole Lechleitner, Primary School computer teacher, presented NXT Robotics: Programming & Engineering Come Alive at the eTech Ohio Conference. The hands-on session instructed teachers in basics of programming the LEGO MindStorms NXT robot, used in the FIRST LEGO League competition for students ages 9-14.

Many schools are in crisis. Today’s educators need to embrace innovation if they’re to prepare every child for the 21st century. And, as has become custom, Hathaway Brown is right in the mix.

If the documentaries that hit theaters in 2010 are an accurate reflection of life in America, then there’s something downright schizophrenic going on in our nation’s education system.

On one end of the spectrum — “Waiting for Superman,” which depicts the woeful state of the nation’s public schools. Budgetary black holes.

Reforms blocked by tenured teachers. Sorely lacking leadership. And somewhere stuck in the middle of the grown-ups’ dysfunction are the children, the ultimate losers in this epic battle.

At the other extreme was “Race to Nowhere,” a tale of stressed-out students running a

kindergarten-to-college rat race. Hours of nightly homework. A packed schedule of sports and extracurriculars. A flurry of frantic résumébuilding, in the hopes that the right combination of experiences, grades, test scores and trophies will mean admission to the right college.

One group of students awaits a superhero who will sweep in and rescue them. Another cries out for relief from adults who expect them to somehow become superheroes by age 16.

Meanwhile, as we all work our way through the complexities and contradictions, the stakes keep growing for all of us.

This isn’t their crisis.

It’s our crisis. And it’s one that none of us can ignore.

Everyone’s Crisis The problems are complex. The potential solutions are hotly debated. But one thing is clear — education in America is at a crossroads, and the consequences of inaction will be far-reaching.

“If we don’t get this thing right, this country will be unrecognizable in 30 years,” said Bill Strickland, founder of the National Center for Arts and Technology in Pittsburgh, a school for inner-city youth that has become a model for what’s possible in urban education.

Strickland was just one of more than 92 speakers who convened at Hathaway Brown last November for the Education Innovation Summit, which drew more than 600 representatives of 110 schools from Connecticut to Hawaii. Their goal? To learn from the top minds in education, technology, medicine, business and beyond about how to deliver the best in 21st century education.

“What we’re witnessing now in our culture are the symptoms of trauma in our educational system … there is no one fix for an education system showing signs of shock,” said HB Head of School Bill Christ in his opening remarks at the Summit. “The stakes are high. We are in danger of losing touch with our mission as educators, which is to provide not only a qualified labor force, but also thinking, questioning, contributing human beings.”

The challenges facing education in America are not limited to schools serving the urban poor like Strickland’s. The experts who gathered at the Education Innovation Summit agreed that fundamental change is needed throughout the educational system to adequately serve young people facing a rapidly changing world.

“Our job is to comprehend and face the scale of change happening right now,” said Ian Jukes, an author, futurist and technology expert who presented at the Summit. “When change is happening quickly, we tend to want to hang on to the past. But we run the risk of crashing headlong into the future.”

And yes, that goes for independent schools too. No private school can operate safely secluded from the crisis raging next door among its public-school counterparts, assuming that the problem belongs to someone else.

“I think [independent schools] are a big part of the solution to this problem,” said Strickland. “I believe independent schools can work with public schools to make them more effective. There are a lot of great people working in the public school system. They just need a little help.”

This isn’t their crisis. It’s our crisis. And it’s one that none of us can ignore.

“Until we get it in our heads that all children are our children, that their individual lives are important and they’re going to contribute to the fabric of our nation, then we’re still going to struggle with this gap,” said Summit speaker Michael Brosnan, editor of Independent School magazine.

Private Schools, Public Purpose A growing number of independent schools — HB included — are embracing the idea that serving a public purpose is part of a private school’s mandate. This philosophy goes far beyond the practice of requiring students to participate in community service projects, which has been a part of the classroom experience for decades. It’s a fundamental mission shift that spans the public-private divide to form mutually beneficial partnerships.

“Given the societal turf independent schools occupy, the considerable resources they command, and the powerful network of caring and influential people they attract, independent schools have the opportunity — and, I believe, the obligation — to do more than educate 1.5 percent of our nation’s children exceptionally well,” wrote Dr. Al Adams, head of San Francisco-based LickWilmerding High School, in a recent issue of Independent School magazine.

Independent schools nationwide are taking action. A coalition of independent schools from across the nation formed the Private Schools with Public Purpose consortium, which shares best practices in civic engagement, service learning curricula, and enrichment opportunities for under-served students. Another independent school and Summit participant, Winchester Thurston School of Pittsburgh, has created the City as our Campus program, which engages students in the city’s civic organizations to be part of solving real urban problems.

One of HB’s best expressions of its commitment to civic outreach is Aspire, which has become a model for public-private education partnership in Northeast Ohio. This tuition-free summer enrichment program has established relationships with 20 underresourced elementary schools in Northeast Ohio, bringing middle school girls together with HB students who serve as their teachers, mentors, and friends.

The first few cohorts of Aspire graduates have now become high school graduates, and 80 percent took honors or AP courses during high school. Seventy percent were earning As or Bs. Efforts are now under way to share the Aspire model with independent schools nationwide, providing the resources to help others create a similar program.

In a session called “Rescuing Urban Education,” Renee Cavor of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District shared with Summit attendees the efforts of the 43,000-student district — which Cleveland’s declining population has reduced from 130,000 — to execute a wide-reaching transformation plan. Cavor, who serves as CMSD’s Chief of Transformation, has the difficult task of improving the district’s 54.6 percent graduation rate, average ACT score of 16 and a state rating of “Continuous Improvement.”

“Hathaway Brown has had their hands out for us in any way, shape or form to collaborate with us,” said Toni Miller, a Summit participant and principal of the Douglas MacArthur Girls Leadership Academy, part of CMSD. “HB has been so helpful in providing information about how girls learn differently.”

Tradition Versus Progress Even among well-resourced schools, the challenge of providing education that’s relevant, inspiring and motivating in the Information Age is real. In the education world, it’s called 21st century education, which espouses a new way of thinking about the skills students will need to make valuable contributions in an era of technological growth and rapid change.

So what exactly is 21st century education? It doesn’t ignore the fundamentals of science, English, history, world languages, math and more. In fact, such subjects are at its core. But it also weaves in such content areas as global and environmental awareness; literacy in the fundamentals of finance, business, entrepreneurship and civic engagement; and empowerment for lifelong health and wellness.

What’s more, it emphasizes the critical thinking and life skills of leadership, ethics, communication, social responsibility, creativity, innovation, media and technology literacy, and more.

HB embraced its own approach to this model when the school created the Institute for 21st Century Education over the last decade.

Bill Christ and a team of HB faculty shared the school’s “solar system” curricular design in front of an audience of Summit attendees.

Other independent schools participating in the Summit shared their own approaches to bring 21st century education fundamentals to the classroom. The Memphis-based Hutchison School has created Hutchison Farm to provide instruction in sustainability and handson science learning. Punahou School of Honolulu shared results from their Student Global Leadership Institute, which prepares students to be “agents of innovation.” And the Westminster Schools of Atlanta have taken a leadership role in promoting excellence among teachers through the Center for Teaching.

Yet other representatives of independent schools voiced frustration with bringing innovative techniques into the culture. “Effecting change in a tradition-rich environment like a private school can be difficult,” said Sarah Edson, who represented The Ethel Walker School of Simsbury, Conn., at the Summit.

That kind of thinking — what speaker Ian Jukes called TTWWADI thinking, as in “that’s the way we’ve always done it” — is one Jukes encouraged educators to reconsider.

As inspiration, Summit attendees heard the stories of extraordinary leaders. Innovators such as Strickland, whose National Center for Arts and Technology has turned welfare mothers into skilled laboratory and pharmaceutical technicians and young men from the streets into gourmet chefs, and spawned the growth of 14 similar centers open or in planning stages across the country and abroad.

Or Joan Countryman, who served at independent schools in the U.S. before taking those experiences to South Africa to lead the groundbreaking Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

Or Elizabeth Coleman, president of Vermont’s Bennington College, who oversaw a reinvention of the liberal arts curriculum there, moving away from the departmentalized structure toward a model that recognizes the interconnectedness of competencies — despite resistance from faculty, alumni, parents and students. “Innovation is something praised in the abstract,” Coleman said in her Summit address, “but energetically resisted in the concrete.”

“There is no need to test the water if you are trying something truly innovative,” she said. “You can be sure it will be very hot.”

What’s at Stake?

Among her strategies are “innovation schools” that include singlegender academies and charter schools; skills academies structured around STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), design and other disciplines; and a high school that pairs adult mentors with young men. Cavor and others credited Northeast Ohio’s independent school community, including HB, for its efforts to support CMSD’s ambitious goals.

“Our moral imperative is girls’ education; how we can help them be their best selves,” Christ told the group. “It’s about inspiring students to rise boldly to the challenges of their time. This is what we were put on earth to do.”

The 21st Century Brain Today’s students have been called Digital Natives, Generation Z or the Net Generation. They’ve never known a time when the Internet and email were not widely available, when there wasn’t a mobile phone in every pocket, and when technology was not changing at an exponential rate.

In short, times have changed, and teachers must adjust their methods to serve a population of students who learn much differently from the way they did. “We grew up in times of relative stability,” said Jukes. “There was a rhythm, a predictability to life.

Our kids are growing up in a time of unpredictability.”

Many of the independent schools that participated in the Summit have employed fascinating methods for bringing technology into the classroom. The Marymount School of New York has created a Mobile Computing Initiative that develops individualized instruction using the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The Windward School of Los Angeles has implemented an active-learning studio based on MIT’s Technology-Enhanced Active Learning model, which adheres to the model “do + think = learn.”

At the same time, much more is known today about the behavior and neuroscience involved in learning, motivation and talent development. Author Daniel Pink has challenged many of the conventional notions of motivation and high performance in his books “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” and “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future.”

“We haven’t been innovative enough in our approach to motivation,” said Pink in his keynote address to the Education Innovation Summit. “Carrot-and-stick motivators fail before our eyes. Our approach isn’t to say, ‘Oh, man, it failed again.’ Instead we say, ‘Guess we need more carrots. Guess we need sharper sticks.’”

Instead of seeking to motivate students with such carrot-and-stick approaches, Pink offered up a different approach to encouraging high performance — autonomy, mastery and a sense of purpose.

He shared a study that compared artistic works that were commissioned to those that were non-commissioned, in which a panel of art experts found the non-commissioned works to be more creative.

Too many of the tasks assigned in schools and workplaces are commissioned, when, Pink asserted, “innovation springs from noncommissioned work.”

What’s more, there are commonalities among the ways high performers learn that can be applied in today’s classrooms, said

Summit speaker Daniel Coyle, author of “The Talent Code.” He studied talent hotbeds within sports, arts, business and music to uncover the keys to developing talent, and found four central ingredients — deep practice, the ability to make mistakes, repetition, and slowing down. As a result, the myelin sheaths that protect our brains’ circuitry actually grow, enabling quicker and more precise neuron firings.

“We see repetition as drudgework, but [research] shows there is neuro-magic in repetition,” Coyle said. “Your brain doesn’t care what it’s learning. It’s about developing fast, fluid circuitry.”

In an educational system largely entrenched in TTWWADI thinking, the central challenge is to combine the best of what new technology has to offer, the latest understanding of how students are motivated to learn, and the fundamentals of practice and repetition that have been employed for generations.

But even with all the technology money can buy, nothing can replace a powerful, effective teacher.

“The killer app for 21st century education is a good teacher who focuses not on software and hardware, but on headware,” said Jukes. “Any teacher in a school who can be replaced by a computer deserves to be.” Story continued on page 23.

HB’S Open Door Policy For many attendees of the Education Innovation Summit, the experience offered an unanticipated benefit: a mini-immersion in the culture of Hathaway Brown.

The vibe of the Summit was something that couldn’t be manufactured – all collegiality, excitement, and inspiration. During one of the final sessions on Saturday, a participant stood up and announced that she is a teacher, and being at the Summit reminded her that’s exactly what she wants to be.

So before they left Shaker Heights, it wasn’t uncommon to overhear Summit participants asking where they could drop off their résumés.

It’s been clear for years that students aren’t the only ones who benefit from the HB experience. In fact, Head of School Bill Christ insists that nobody has gotten more from the school than he has.

That sentiment seems to be shared. Recent graduates spend good portions of their school breaks visiting their former HB teachers.

Grandparents’ Days play to capacity crowds. Parents volunteer to take candid pictures for the yearbook just so they can be in the halls.

Retired teachers offer their services as classroom substitutes or drop in a few times a month so they can do yoga with old friends.

And over the course of the last three years, HB has welcomed delegations from more than 30 schools around the globe – teams of faculty and administrators who made the trip to learn more about the school’s programs and processes.

On top of being a nice place to visit, HB is an amazing place to work.

Just ask the Employers Resource Council. For the last 11 years, the organization has named the school to the esteemed NorthCoast 99.

HB is the only primary or secondary school to be honored as one of the 99 great workplaces for top talent in Northeast Ohio, and it has been a winner every year that ERC has evaluated nonprofit organizations.

If you want a sense of what qualifies HB for this prestigious award, you could spend a few hours poring over the extensive application.

In it, you’ll find references to the yoga and fitness classes for employees, monthly chair massages offered by Lesley Sargent LaBenne ’83, and the fabulous lunches served every day. You’ll learn that HB does its best to recruit a diverse and enthusiastic workforce, viewing itself as a “cosmopolitan, innovative, dynamic city of learning, but a city with a heart dedicated to educating the whole person, mind, body, and spirit.”

You’ll notice a laundry list of professional development opportunities for employees, including international travel, fieldwork, and advanced courses in a variety of disciplines. And you’ll discover how people with big ideas and excellent work ethics are nurtured and encouraged by school administrators to try new things and to make the most of themselves as educators and human beings.

But reading the NorthCoast 99 application doesn’t really do justice when it comes to explaining the feeling you get from being surrounded by some of the brightest, friendliest, hardest-working people in Northeast Ohio. For that, you just have to be here.

Teachers from far and wide were able to spend time sharing ideas with HB faculty, touring classrooms, and interacting with students.

They also had a chance to get up close and personal with the school’s academic architecture, and to enjoy lighthearted moments of camaraderie with others who care just as deeply as they do about educating young people.

Where do we go from here?

In some of the most poignant moments in the documentary “Waiting for Superman,” anxious families fill a gymnasium with children in their laps, waiting to hear their number called over a PA system. Those who hear their numbers leap out of their seats in celebration, with tears of joy sparkling on their cheeks.

Innovation in education is an imperative for the future of such children, their only hope in a public school system in crisis.

Innovation in education is an imperative for private schools, which bear particular responsibility for preparing students who will contribute to these solutions. And innovation in education is an imperative for the civic, community and business leaders who will one day employ and engage today’s generation of students.

“If we create new designs that benefit only our students, if we forget that we are private schools with public purposes, if we neglect to recognize the signs that tell us that our nation’s educational crisis is a shared obligation,” said Bill Christ in his closing challenge to this assembly of educators, “then we will have learned nothing.”

The stakes are high, and the payoff is nothing less than our nation’s future viability.

“The world is right in its devotion to the power of education above all else,” said Coleman. “Imagine what will happen if we do it right.

Imagine what will happen if we don’t.”

It means they’ve been chosen by lottery for one of the few spots available in their local charter schools, which they see as saviors from districts filled with dysfunction. When all the numbers have been called, and the lucky winners have dispersed, the remaining families remain slumped in seats, consoling children who’d prayed for a way out of schools that are failing them.

One Girl’s Courage

It was quite an event.

This February, the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel was swimming with celebrities and people who wanted to have pictures taken with them.

The new Browns coach was there. So were members of the Cavaliers and the Indians. High school wrestlers were mingling with amateur rowers and college soccer goalies. They all had gathered for the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards, a celebration of athletes who are accustomed to bringing crowds to their feet.

And there among them was a table filled with Hathaway Brown teachers waiting to cheer for eighth grader Olivia Warhop. The exuberant 14-year-old was about to take the stage to accept the 2010 Courage Award.

Olivia said she wasn’t nervous even though there were a thousand people in nice suits and gowns watching a video tribute to her. As the audience absorbed the images flashing on the wide screen monitors, the narrator told the story: Olivia is an athlete. She loves swimming and soccer. She’s the daughter of a highly respected NFL offensive line coach. Back in 2008, the Warhops lived in San Francisco where her father coached with the 49ers. One day she came home from soccer practice. She was in pain. She thought she had a shin splint. It hurt when she ran. And there was a small lump.

Mom took her to the 49ers trainer who recommended they see a sports doctor at Stanford University. That doctor took an x-ray. He saw something but didn’t know what it was. Then they did an MRI, which didn’t clarify as much as they’d hoped. Then they did a biopsy.

“I didn’t know what benign meant,” Olivia recalls. “And then my mom told me, and I said, yes!”

The tumor on Olivia’s left tibia was, in fact, benign, but it was also a problem. Doctors in the Bay Area removed it successfully, but when the full biopsy came back, the smallest portion, one percent, was deemed cancerous.

It was a shock to say the least. And there was an additional problem.

Dad had taken a new job. He had left the sunsets glaring off the Golden Gate Bridge in February for the snow-packed lawns of Berea, Ohio. The family had planned to follow at the end of the school year. While the Cleveland Browns brought him to work with

their offensive line, his mind was on his daughter and the journey she had in front of her, halfway across the country.

When it comes to weather, the benefits of moving from San Francisco to Cleveland are debatable, but one thing’s for sure: the city’s hospitals can lend warm comfort to a set of nervous parents.

The Warhops found a specialist at Cleveland Clinic and decided to transfer her care so the family could be together. The doctor told Olivia and her parents that there had to be another surgery. He needed to remove six inches of her tibia and replace it with a donor bone — and two metal plates to secure it.

For a girl new to town, this was not the welcome wagon. “I was sad,” Olivia recalls. “You know those horror stories about cancer, so I was nervous.”

Nonetheless, Olivia walked into the surgery with something like hope. She just wanted someone to make the cancer go away. And so in August 2009, the surgeon did as he’d planned. The procedure took six hours, kept her in the hospital for six days, and left her with a 15-inch scar running from her left knee cap to her ankle.

In the video tribute, the nurses extol Olivia’s optimism. They say that Olivia is the kind of girl who thinks even the hard parts of life are laced with reasons to feel grateful and hopeful.

September came, and with it came Olivia’s first day of seventh grade at a new school. “I was a little embarrassed because I was in a wheelchair,” she says. She also didn’t know anyone. It didn’t take long, though, for HB to make her feel welcome. “The girls were really nice to me. They sat with me at lunch. And everyone wanted to use the elevator with me.”

With or without the wheelchair, Olivia would have made an impression. She has one of those infectious smiles and a laugh to match it. “Olivia exemplifies what it means to be an HB girl,” says her seventh grade English teacher, Sharon Baker. “She was undaunted by her challenges, and even more, faced them with enthusiasm and dedication.”

Those challenges didn’t end when Olivia began her time at HB. Since she had her tibia replaced in 2009, she’s had two other surgeries to connect the donor bone with the native bones. Each time she’s gone into the hospital, her friends and teachers have

rallied behind her. And each time, she has amazed everyone with her grace.

“I try to keep a positive attitude all the time,” she says. “It helps. If you look at the negative side all the time, you’ll always be sad and depressed.”

How does she suggest people stay optimistic in the face of fear and pain? “Watch funny movies, hang out with family and friends, talk to your grandma. And read funny books.

That’s what I did. Oh, and eat good food. I do like food.”

One Girl’s Courage

At the end of the video tribute, the crowd rose to its feet and celebrated Olivia’s courage. She offered some kind remarks of gratitude to her family, her doctors, her friends and her school. When she left the stage, her teachers were the last to sit back down.

“What stood out most was the moment right before Olivia accepted the award,” recalls her World Geography teacher, Bridgette Nadzam-Kasubick. “Just the energy that filled the room, the standing ovation, the grand applause. Olivia captured the hearts of many in a matter of minutes, the same way she caught ours within the first few moments of knowing her. Come to think of it, deservedly, this kid has been in the spotlight for a couple of years now, but she remains kind and true to herself — no sign of ego at all.”

Olivia is feeling good these days.

The cancer is gone – “kicked out the door,” she says.

She’s a member of HB’s Middle School swim team (though she has to take it easy in the pool). She also hopes to be able to play soccer competitively again next year.

And now she’s really excited because, on the day of her last surgery this fall, she found out that she was accepted to participate in HB’s France trip this summer. True to form, Olivia’s not at all fearful about what she may encounter in her travels. “Now I get to eat snails, and I’ve never tried snails before. I told my parents I was going to, and I will.”

And no one around here doubts that she’ll keep her word.

One alumna returns to school to discover how HB develops the writing life.

Powerful Suggestions

“Wait, no it’s not!” argued a creative consideration – I write, my friends write, and my fellow countrymen email, text, and tweet dialogues for which they could substitute 10-second phone calls. We prefer to write. Always.

Dr. Pauline Thornton continued. “Come here.” She gestured me out of my seat, and I followed her down the hall. We stopped at a line of posters outside the Writing Center. Without much ceremony, Thornton listed off local, regional, and national competitions, tapping them as she went.

“Uh,” came a third, confused thought. Are we talking writing as an absolute or writing well?

Should we question the prevalence of the written word, Hathaway Brown English teacher Beth Armstrong is sure the word is here to stay. “I don’t care what job [my students] end up with down the road, it will involve writing,” she said. “Writing is more than a skill.

It’s essential.”

And should we wonder about quality writing, history teacher Carl Hoffman confirms that exists, too. “We keep hearing feedback from alums who have gone off and been complimented on how well they write,” he said. “I am totally confident that everyone who goes through HB has the opportunity to become a competent writer or better, and 90 percent or more do so.”

If our culture is hostile to writing, then HB poses a strong undercurrent. Her graduates continue to demonstrate formidable skill with the written word. At least a few enjoy it, too.

I liked writing when I came to HB, but I loved it when I graduated.

I’ve wondered what transpired in those four years. There must be something imparted to HB students beyond exercises and methods – students write with too much gusto for it to be a product of pure regimen. How do teachers instruct writing so well, and produce enthusiastic writers to boot?

I returned to HB and asked around.

When I graduated, HB knew me predominantly as a creative writer.

This resulted mainly from two events: The Bennington and my Strnad. One teacher prompted both.

Far back and away, I still hear her voice. “This is good. This is really good.” She had a poem in her hands. I probably glowed.

“You could enter The Bennington.” She said that a few times. “Why don’t you do that?” Then she offered to help me submit an entry.

I looked dubiously at the poster. The Bennington Young Writers Competition. I could try.

The next semester I was attending The Mountain School in Vermont when my mom called. Friends heard my surprise from outside our “phone closet.” A teacher made an announcement at The Mountain School, and I heard someone did back at HB also. I don’t remember thinking much more that semester about what it meant to win that competition.

I considered it more on returning for my senior year. In one college application essay, I wondered what it meant that a judge, somewhere in Vermont, chose my submission over thousands of other students’ to win a prize. What was I supposed to do with that?

Although I was still weighing its significance, winning Bennington’s contest encouraged me to ask Dr. Thornton for help with more writing. She urged me to attempt a Strnad Fellowship Project in Creativity. Under her mentorship, I wrote a short book of poems; a number of them, I recall, involved the sun or snow-clad trees.

The project threw me somersaulting in love with creative writing.

I wanted more.

There Must be Writing in the Water

Recently, I asked myself whether our culture shows hostility to the written word. “Yes!” exclaimed an inner academic. Nobody proofreads, we can’t spell, and we lack discrimination between good writing and lame substitutions.

Writing is declining by the second.

My choice to attend Kenyon College was affected by a new verve to keep writing. And while I didn’t get into every workshop I attempted, each time I applied I recalled that individuals with PhDs had already worked with me on poetry and taken me seriously. I had to keep trying. You could say that winning the Bennington Prize and doing my Strnad project changed my life.

Eight years later, I heard of a senior at HB winning medals with her stories. I knew I had to meet her.

Rejection Points and National Medals Sienna Zeilinger ’11, who has spent her academic life at HB, is extremely humble. First, we talked about rejection.

In 2008, John Verbos, the English teacher who chairs his department and directs The Osborne Writing Center, initiated a Rejection Contest: every time a student did not win a writing competition, she would gain a point. The student acquiring the most rejection points would earn candy. Verbos hoped his students would see that writers lose nothing by submitting to contests.

The logic clicked with Zeilinger. She enthusiastically garnered 29 rejections in seven months. She also won a few regional and local competitions. Then along came a big one.

“I walked into the Writing Center one day, and Mr. Verbos pointed to a colorful poster on the wall and said, ‘You should check this out. I think you’ve got a good shot at this,” Zeilinger explained.

Scholastic’s official website defined Gold-Medal submissions as the most outstanding works in the nation. “I only entered because I figured I could rack up a whole bunch of rejection points in one swoop.”

Zeilinger entered the 2009 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Her story won a Gold Key at the Regional level. Then it won a National Gold Medal.

“I thought getting a national award was just like receiving a Gold Key, so I figured that if I did end up winning anything, I’d get a certificate in the mail and maybe something shiny,” she said. When Zeilinger learned she was invited to receive her award in New York, she recalled, “I think that was the biggest double-take I’ve ever done in my life.”

Then she did it again in 2010. Paula Poundstone judged the humor category at the national round and chose Zeilinger’s submission as one deserving of a National Gold Medal. And just this spring, Zeilinger doubled her number of “most outstanding works in the nation.”

For the 2011 Art and Writing Awards, Scholastic reported 185,000 pieces entered. Of that, 1,524 works won national medals, of which a scant 405 won writing awards. Of those 405 awards, Zeilinger won three: two National Gold Medals in the short story category and one National Silver Medal in the category of science fiction and fantasy. (Read her winning entry on page 33.)

Zeilinger is one of three students in the country to win three national awards this year; she is one of two to win writing Gold Medals for the past three years (2009-2011), and she is the only person in her grade to do so. She will receive her medals at Carnegie Hall in May. Since her first medal in 2009, this achievement came to represent something more than prestige to Zeilinger. For the first time, she’d truly been judged blindly. “Nobody at Scholastic knew my name, my gender, my age, or my hometown; my writing was just that, writing, and the fact that folks who write for a living could read it and enjoy it enough to award it something – I mean, that’s still so incredible to me,” she said.

By the third round of medals, Zeilinger felt stunned. “This whole thing grew out of a personal quest for rejection, but about a third of what I’ve submitted over the past three years has won a national award,” she mused. “It hasn’t even set in yet as something that could happen, much less as something that actually did.”

Zeilinger’s humility persisted. “I’m fully aware that just because this happened a few times doesn’t mean all of my writing is going to be decidedly excellent,” she said. “I think it’ll serve as greater motivation to make everything I write my best work. And just for the record,” she added, “I’ve officially got 13 rejection points on the year so far.”

Talking with Zeilinger made me wonder how HB tends to growing writers, both at her age and leading up to it. I headed to the Primary School.

Where Words Have Meaning The Director of the Primary School was in the middle of a busy day, but Kathy Zopatti remained deliberate and sincere as she spoke about the Primary School’s approach to writing. The school brings girls into a writing life at a young age.

She said kindergartners are taught that, “letters are parts of words, and words have meaning.” Zopatti added that teachers care not only that their students write but write what they mean to communicate.

“When [students] come to us, they’re still learning to form letters,” she said, but the goal is still “to get their ideas.”

“Girls tend to love to talk and tell stories,” Zopatti said. Young students at HB are learning how to write long before they’re aware of it.

Zopatti has been teaching primary school students to read and write for 30 years. She described how teachers in the Prime try to minimize learning obstacles for young students. For example, teachers will transcribe students’ stories for assignments, so that students can learn to express their thoughts while they are still learning to write with a pencil.

Similarly, at older ages, teachers may share the physical task of writing or typing an assignment with students who have difficulty with certain motor skills, “so we can get their ideas out.” Teachers want to encourage their students to continue idea development and enjoy the process as well.

That approach only grows in the Middle School. When I shook hands with Susan Levitan, I was aware I was meeting an HB legend. In her 30th year of teaching English at Hathaway Brown, Levitan explained the Middle School’s approach to teaching writing.

Students in middle school, she said, tend toward introspection.

At that age, “they are focused on themselves and the conviction that what you know is truth and universal.” The HB faculty, not coincidentally, centralizes many curricular themes around the definition of an individual. This is heavily mirrored in milestone writing projects, particularly the annual “This I Believe” essay.

A few minutes later, I met another HB writing instructor.

In Sharon Baker’s room just around the corner, the Middle School English Department Chair explained how writing is taught to grades five through eight. Over those four years, students grow from crafting strong paragraphs with good evidence to mastering essays of multiple pages, Baker said.

“I tell my students when they turn writing in, they are publishing it – they should be proud of it,” she noted, highlighting the raised stakes on spelling and grammar for those grades.

Teachers meet with students about writing as much as they can; Baker works one-on-one during class, meets during recess, or exchanges drafts and comments with students over email to meet their individual writing development needs.

Teachers keep students writing a lot. “They write every day – they write [vocabulary] sentences, they write about countries, they write in math class analyzing their test taking,” Baker said. “It’s a wholeschool model. They write all day; it makes a difference. Every history, science, and math teacher also thinks of themselves as a writing teacher.”

Students harboring additional fervor for writing become obvious to their teachers. “They show you drafts, they analyze each word, they try to use new vocabulary words they’re learning for class in their writing,” described Baker. The school supplies these students with further opportunities, such as involvement in WEST Fellowships, the outside competition Power of the Pen, or HB’s creative writing academy.

“They come out excellent,” Baker said of students graduating from the eighth grade. “Most enjoy it, partially because they’re good at it.”

I knew from experience that encouragement and strong teaching don’t end with the Middle School. I headed to the Upper School, where I began my own education at Hathaway Brown.

Power in the Written Word

The Osborne Writing Center functions differently from the school’s classrooms. I started there.

In ninth grade I was introduced to the school’s writing values and expectations by Beth Armstrong, who has been teaching English in the Upper School for 13 years. Armstrong explained that students around the ages of 14 and 15 are transitioning from early to late adolescence, a time when students become more intellectually aware of themselves. Armstrong said witnessing students comprehend more of the intangible during this metacognitive development stage is exciting.

The center provides one-on-one help on pieces for class, but is not limited to assignments. There is no evaluative component in using the Writing Center. “I think it’s good that this is a nonjudgmental place,” said Verbos, the director. “The Writing Center is a constructive space available to [students] who want it.”

I called Pauline Thornton to ask about the Writing Center’s founding. Thornton taught English at HB for 18 years before retiring in 2004. She first voiced her idea for a Writing Center in the 1990s.

Thornton stressed the Writing Center represented a schoolwide ideal. “It cut across the curriculum. It wasn’t just the province of one department. There was a lot of emphasis [across the school] on thought and expression and even personal interpretation.”

At first, the writing center existed as a few hours in Thornton’s classroom each week. A crucial part of the vision was a designated space, however. Thornton wrote for grant funds and in time a Writing Center was established. Terry Dubow became the director after Thornton, and Verbos followed Dubow.

Located on the second floor of the school’s Classic Building, the Osborne Writing Center was named by Virginia Osborne Charman ’41 and Marjorie Osborne Davidson ’40 in honor of their parents, William McKinley and Jessie M. Osborne. This former classroom is outfitted with half a dozen computers, bookshelves filled with literary works, and comfortable chairs pushed beneath writing tables. It also boasts a wall covered with posters heralding contests and other creative writing opportunities. Upper School students are welcome to drop in to engage in casual discussions about the process of writing and to seek feedback about their work.

Thornton was motivated by the vision of a space that would “stimulate writing, place a value on the written word, and aid students in the process.” It worked, she said, because, “There was a school culture around it that valued expression.”

“Things become less concrete and more abstract,” Armstrong said. “[A student] can start to see those things in ways [she was] just not mentally ready for in eighth and ninth and even the beginning of 10th grade.”

As students get a better grasp of representational ideas, teachers in the Upper School strive to help each student develop her writing skills at the same time.

Verbos described utilizing helpful patterns. “I try to give them good modeling examples: to present them with a good argument, good evidence; and to show them how a [strong] piece works.”

Verbos gave examples of varied approaches held by faculty members for helping students write. “Several do one-on-one conferences [on papers],” he said. “Some teachers are very into the process – there are more teachable moments in that. There’s another line of thought, which is, that can make the piece too precious; you can spend that time on quick repetitions.” Verbos finds both methods valuable.

Armstrong emphasized the crucial role of listening in teaching writing. Her colleagues share this approach. “We want to listen and respond to students as writers,” she said.

I asked Armstrong and Verbos how they encourage interest in writing or make it appealing. “I think part of it is by engaging the literature that we’re reading and sharing our experience of the power of the words that we’re reading together,” Armstrong replied.

“Writing is so tied to assessment for them,” Verbos said. “I try to reintroduce the idea to them that you have a voice – that you can make people feel something. I think that makes writing powerful.

You can see things in a new way.”

The ideals and methods that these teachers described clicked into place around that thought. When students come to see writing as powerful, writing is not just a task or a tool. It’s an opportunity to influence.

Teachers also impart to their students enjoyment of the written word. They help them appreciate its power and beauty.

Zeilinger recalled from her experiences as a Primary and Middle School student that her teachers “stressed writing as something worth knowing, not because the state of Ohio made us, but because there was some inherent value in learning how to wield words effectively.”

The level to which this school’s culture values the written word is contagious. That’s why the Upper School faculty developed the Writing Center.

Not merely writing, but writing well, is prized at HB. Hathaway Brown indicates its values by dedicating time to the act of writing, investing funds in actions supporting their ideals, and discussing writing and its fruits with an attitude of appreciation.

At all levels and ages, students at Hathaway Brown learn that words have meaning. They write constantly. Teachers treat them as serious thinkers and writers, and the school offers opportunities and resources to excel as far as students have interest. Teachers encourage them to improve at communication. To say what they mean.

That’s why the school approved funds for a 17-year-old girl, who liked to write about snow-clad trees and light, to write poetry under creative writing doctors and, as a result, to change her life.

That’s why teachers from every level connect their students to others and to their own thoughts through the written word.

What’s the high value they see in writing? Power.

And Hathaway Brown has it.

Ms. Rothman’s pause could have been nothing but an involuntary response to a deeper breath than usual. I told myself this. It could have been an accidental stutter, a momentary choke on saliva, a sudden inhale.

But it wasn’t. Something told me it wasn’t. The pause was involuntary and recuperative. It was probably the kind of thing she wouldn’t even know she had done. It was employed for the purpose of delay, of stalling, so that Ms. Rothman could formulate an answer to my question that would not betray her uncertainty. Her uncertainty regarding my son.

There is a routine line drive. My son lifts his gloved hand, catches, squeezes, anchors with his bare hand, removes, throws, follows through, wipes his mouth, adjusts his hat, nods. It is a routine. It is as it should be.

Nobody applauds; there is no need.

My son’s unexceptionality should comfort me, I know. My son is not a failure at anything. He’ll never have to worry about not having a friend.

to put down a good sacrifice anyway. He will save up for a used car. He will go to prom and pretend to obsess over whether his tie matches his date’s dress. He will go to college, and then he’ll graduate while we smile proudly and flash our cameras. He will nod his head at me and then try to figure out what to do with his life. He will find a job he’s not crazy about, and excel at it. He will meet a girl. He will introduce her to Fran and me. We will look at each other and her and him and we will know.

My son will get married. We will be there. My son will have a son. We will be there, too. His son will cry every night, and one night, while his wife is asleep, my son will cry with the baby, because he will realize he has no idea how to help, what to fix. My son will get promoted. He will want out, sometimes, but will never tell anyone. He will get restless.

His wife will worry. He will move, take the family, leave the job. He will attend his son’s Little League games and host backyard barbeques for the players’ families. He will start worrying about me and Fran and hair loss and hereditary dementia. He will look at his son’s shoes and mistake them for a man’s, a small man’s, and then it will occur to him that his son is a small man. He will go to parent-teacher conferences with his wife and then walk to the baseball field at the elementary school and sit in the top row of the bleachers and run his hands through his hair and gaze across the street at his average-sized house among all the other averagesized houses. And then he will look out into left field at his smiling son, his son who can’t outrun a bunt for his life, and wonder when things went so terribly, unspeakably wrong.

Locker Room During the winter, no one hibernates at Hathaway Brown ­— least of all our student athletes. This season was one for the record books, not just for the accomplishments but for the grit and grace of the girls who spent hours upon hours in the water, on the track and on the courts all over Northeast Ohio.

At the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches State meet on March 19, the 4x800 relay team finished in 8th place, setting a new school record of 10:18. Emily Sisel ’11 finished in 11th place in the Triple Jump, and the 4x400 relay team finished in 13th place.

And for the third year in a row, the Blazers are the OHSAA Division II State Champion girls’ basketball team, defeating the Carroll High School Patriots in a thrilling 54-51 victory.

“This has kind of been like a recurring dream for these ladies,” observed OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Henry Zaborniak. “In 2007, they were State Runner-Up; in 2008 - RunnerUp. And then they said, ‘That’s not good enough for us, Coach.’ So in 2009, they became State Champions. In 2010, State Champions. And now, in 2011 - State Champions.”

ride, sometimes when they are in the Pre-K and have never been on a bus before, and he has driven many girls throughout their entire lives at HB. He really is an HB family member and that is how he reacts to everyone here.”

From his perch, Wismar has watched the school grow dramatically.

On his early routes, he’d have only a few students. This year, the transportation staff picks up and drops off 81 students in 26 communities.

In 1995, he began driving the sports teams to and from games, and since then he’s earned a reputation as an enthusiastic observer. “I have a tendency to ride the referees occasionally,” he admits with his wry smile. “I do point out when they miss something.”

If you’ve walked the halls, watched a field hockey game, field-tripped with a class, you’ve seen him. He’s taller than most with a warm smile and a memory that absorbs names and field hockey scores like a sponge. Under his arm, he usually has a thick book with a title that bewilders, something about mythology or the Weimar Republic. He’s Steve Wismar, member of the transportation department, HB booster extraordinaire, the man who’s likely logged more miles on a yellow bus than anyone in HB’s long history.

Since 1983, Wismar has been hauling students from the west side to the east, from campus to University Circle, from field houses, tournaments, victories, and defeats. He likes being part of the HB experience for so many girls. He found about the position from a woman at his church, HB’s longtime Primary School Director, Bitty Dorr. He’d just received his BA from Cleveland State and needed a small job. At the time, the school only had a few routes – one student to pick up in Lakewood in the morning, another student to drop off in Seven Hills at midday, and one last one to her home in Beachwood after school.

Even so, he says he knew instantly that this would become more than a job. “When I walked through the door, I realized that this is a very special place.”

And it didn’t take long for him to become an essential part of the day for many girls. “Over the years, Steve has become more than a driver,” explains Bob Armstrong, Director of Transportation. “He knows the girls, and they know him. They have met him for their first school bus

“It has to be winning the Field Hockey State Championship in 2002. When I heard the ball hit the back of the goal in overtime, it was wonderful.” He’d witnessed a lot of field hockey by that time, including some painful losses. “Winning made up for all that.”

Working in an academic institution is a natural fit from Wismar, whose reading habits are prodigious. He’s a student of religion, mythology, and history who tends to have encyclopedia-sized biographies tucked under the driver’s seat. “I’m really interested in the effect of nationalism on the world now and how it’s transformed foreign affairs. The United States no longer can assume a position of being neutral.”

As avid a student as he is, Wismar’s main focus is helping HB’s students. “There are ways in which it has almost taken over my existence,” he jokes. “There are a lot of weekends and nights, but it’s always something I’ve enjoyed. It’s fun to be involved in things that much.”

The admiration goes both ways. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate his professional demeanor when I call him at 5:30 a.m. to get him out of bed and tell him he needs to fill in for another driver who is unexpectedly ill,” says Armstrong. “All I have ever heard him say under these circumstances is, ‘Okay, I’ll get there as quickly as I can.’ Steve has always done whatever anyone asked, always lends a hand to help, and is simply a wonderful person. I have worked with him for 28 years, and I have never heard him say anything negative about anyone. ” No one but a few nearsighted referees would disagree.

Staff Profile

He estimates that he’s seen more than 1,000 games in the last 28 years. “When I was in school, I didn’t do a lot of the extracurriculars,” Wismar says. “I like being part of them here.” The highlights are plenty, but one stands out.

On Sunday, March 6, 2011 Hathaway Brown dedicated the newly renovated Ahuja Auditorium with a mesmerizing performing arts showcase. “Encore!� featured students of all ages in a wide variety of performances ranging from Shakespearean scenes to original student compositions to Broadway songs. The final number, Outside In, performed by Upper School Advanced Company dancers, dazzled the audience with choreography by guest artist Jennifer Keller and movements combined with pre-recorded video footage.

Sister Act:

The Ahujas Set the Stage for Future Performers

Together Manisha Ahuja Sethi ’94 and Ritu Ahuja ’97 cut the ribbon as part of the dedication of The Ahuja Auditorium at Hathaway Brown on March 5. These young HB alumnae whose $1 million gift restored and updated the 1926 auditorium celebrated the dedication of The Ahuja Auditorium with an intimate gathering of family, friends, fellow members of the Board of Trustees and several of their former teachers.

Awash in blues and purples, Manisha and Ritu’s HB class colors, the auditorium stage served as the perfect venue for the memorable occasion. Head of School Bill Christ acknowledged the impact the extraordinary gift has had on the school. “We celebrate the wonderful generosity of two very youthful philanthropists, Manisha Ahuja Sethi ’94 and RituAhuja ’97, whose splendid gift has made possible the restoration and rejuvenation of this auditorium, one of the most beloved places on our beautiful campus.”

The home of the HB’s performing arts programs, morning meetings, and countless special events, The Ahuja Auditorium now possesses a new front stage drapery, electronic rigging system, lighting and dimming systems, refurbished seating, and a catwalk. The state-ofthe-art upgrades also required a new electric sub-station, adding excellent safety and security to the entire system.

Speaking on behalf of herself and her sister, Ritu shared how grateful they are to give back to a place that gave them so much.

“We spent the vast majority of our youth at HB, learning, growing and developing relationships. No matter how much time passes that we’re apart, the girls in our classes will always be a part of who we are; it’s a true sisterhood.” The auditorium has always been an important place for them, she said, because “HB is family and this is where that family gathers.” Ritu recognized her former teachers and acknowledged the influence they have had on her life, noting that “It’s the faculty that makes HB so magical.”

The celebration continued the following day for the entire community with “Encore!” (photos on pages 38 & 39) — a performing arts showcase featuring HB students of all ages.

Poetry readings, musical and vocal acts, one-act plays, and dance performances entertained the audience and highlighted many of the auditorium’s upgrades.

The visible and behind-the-scenes upgrades have significantly enhanced student presentations and will influence daily life at HB for years to come. “Manisha and Ritu, you are an incredible sister act, and we are profoundly grateful for what you have done for your alma mater, and for all the students and faculty of Hathaway Brown,” said Christ. “We dedicate this space to you with the heartfelt thanks for the entire community.”

If you can’t see poverty, illiteracy, sexually transmitted diseases, global warming, gender inequality, and obesity as causes for dancing, you haven’t talked to Kathleen Adams.

A Hathaway Brown “lifer” who graduated in 2006, Adams has never been one to adopt a traditional view. Her mother can’t remember a time that she hasn’t put her own spin on things. Even as a toddler, she wouldn’t accept any request or directive without investigating whether it were properly justified. To this day, “because I said so” is not a line of defense that she would ever buy.

Her high school dance teacher, Marlene Leber, describes how Adams interpreted music in ways that other students simply did not, and how she moved with a beautiful and purposeful fluidity that was difficult to comprehend, but undeniably easy to appreciate. And

English teacher Terry Dubow vividly recalls Adams’ disbelief when he vetoed her request to turn in a painting in response to an essay assignment to express her understanding of a novel that she and her classmates had just read.

Now working on a Master’s degree in Urban Studies at Fordham University (where she also was an undergrad), Adams has always been interested in issues of social justice. She was a “Get Out the Vote” volunteer long before she was of voting age herself. And she was an active and much relied-on participant in the efforts of Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland, offering straight-talk advice and relationship counseling to young women before she could even drive a car. The educational field she’s chosen is perfectly suited for her because she’s hardworking, caring, creative, and incredibly impatient. If she sees a problem, you will never catch her waiting for someone else – or some better time – to solve it.

Held March 5, 2011, “Let’s Get Active!” was the best attended MHHK yet, with women and children of all ages enjoying the entertainment and discovering ways to improve their lives by making changes to things that are well within their control. “If you don’t have a healthy body,” Adams asks, “how can you have a healthy mind?”

At the same time, she noticed how some people of color seemed to have resigned themselves to the notion that they had no real control over their own environments. She saw African-American women living in poverty, with little or no access to healthcare, sending their children to failing schools, and listening to music that devalued their worth just because that’s the way it was. So one day, Adams says, she decided “enough is enough.”

Although she has not yet entered the professional workforce, Adams’ résumé already boasts an impressive array of accomplishments. In addition to her work with MHHK, she also serves on the Young Women of Color Leadership Council for Advocates for Youth, an organization that aims to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. She’s a member of the New York Junior League, and she has been a contributor to “Teen Sisters Health: A Black Girl’s Wellness Guide for Mind, Body, & Spirit.” And as soon as she completes her Urban Studies degree, Adams will finish forming a waste-management company run solely by women.

She brainstormed with her friend Lah Tere and came up with an innovative way to use music as a medium to deliver the tools and the confidence they believed women would need to improve their lives. In 2008, Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen was born. Billed as “The Soup Kitchen for the Hip Hop Soul,” MHHK is a showcase of raw emotional artistry delivered mostly by women of color. The idea is to bring people together for a free concert with female rappers, emcees, break dancers, graffiti artists, musicians, and poets. Away from the stage, attendees have access to educational materials, counseling, health screenings, and social service resources centered around a specific theme. A host of doctors, therapists, teachers, and other professionals donate their time and expertise to the cause.

The first year, event organizers focused on HIV/AIDS and reproductive-justice issues. Twenty artists played to a standingroom-only crowd of 500 people at a small auditorium in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. Women and children flocked to the informational booths and gathered around the performers to soak up as much of the vibe as they could. Even Adams was blown away by the success.

“When you speak to people in a language they can understand, they will listen to what you have to say,” she observes. “The message we’re delivering is real, it’s accessible, and it’s important. So it makes sense that people would be interested. We’re giving women a way to come face-to-face with intimidating topics in a safe space.”

Excitement about MHHK quickly spread, and more artists volunteered their services for Volume 2 - Faith, Feminism, and Hip Hop - which attracted more than 1,000 people. To accommodate demand, the concert was moved to Hostos Community College in the South Bronx. It has now become an annual event there, slated for the first Saturday in March to honor International Women’s History Month. Volume 3 addressed the themes of Environmental Justice, Education, and Equality; and Volume 4, this year’s MHHK, was designed to raise awareness about obesity, nutrition, and exercise.

In 2010, Adams and her mother, Dr. Linda Bradley, who serves as Vice Chair of OB/GYN and the Women’s Health Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, were given the Power of Woman Award

by Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland. They were the first mother-daughter duo ever to be so honored.

While she speaks humbly about her own recognition, Adams’ mother isn’t one bit surprised by Kathleen’s success. She and her husband, Ron Adams – also a doctor – raised their daughter to speak her mind, challenge conventions, and do what’s right in order to maximize her own potential. Those ideals led them to choose HB for the first 15 years of her education.

“Hathaway Brown is a school that really teaches young girls to be leaders,” Bradley says. “The school helps shape character. It allows students to be enthusiastic and passionate about the things that are important to them.”

Alumnae Art Gallery A recent report by the National Opinion Research Center found that “90 percent of American readers highly value poetry and believe it enriches the lives of those who read it.”

Hathaway Brown readers are likely well represented in that number. Many students, teachers and alumnae read and write poetry. We were glad to receive a smattering of it for this edition of the Alumnae Art Gallery.

We chose this poem by Chellis Glendinning ’65 because of its use of precise language to evoke place. Within her clipped images are a whole set of ideas and feelings that readers can pick through to arrive at something that approximates standing next to her in Bolivia.

Yes, senior classes before and after us may be special, and yes, I may be biased, but the class of 2010 is really something special. We have been through a lot of changes, little and big, together at HB. A new student dean, actual enforcement of the no sweatpants rule, a complete restructuring of our schedules, a new legacy system, the creation of a senior only parking lot ­— oh wait, that never happened. But with every change and moment of adversity, this senior class has stayed united and positive and showed true leadership.

I came to HB as a freshman. Throughout the whole application process and then the enrolling process, teachers, parents, coaches and administrators were constantly telling my family and me about how truly talented, unique and accomplished the class of 2010 already was by their eighth grade year. I just figured it was the spiel they had to give to every new student.

I was responding like most kids do when parents tell them how smart, talented or wonderful they are; our response usually is “Oh you just have to say that. You’re my parents.” But I was wrong. I realized, as I got to know the class of 2010 more and more that these teachers, parents and HB staff members were not exaggerating.

This senior class is truly one of the most special that HB has seen, and now I’m saying it too.

So just to be clear, I am not the valedictorian. If HB did use the Valedictorian system, I’m pretty sure it would

be impossible to pick just one from a class like ours.

Instead, every girl has been Valedictorian of her own personal journey at HB and in her 18 years of life.

This senior class raised a record amount of money for our selected charities: the Domestic Violence Center and cancer research. This was largely due to the senior leadership and hard work that went into the Carnival and Kick-It events this year. Our Cum Laude inductees are hands-down the next female Einsteins. The Strnad showed off the class of 2010’s array of interests and all-around thirst for knowledge.

Think back to your freshman year self. Now your sophomore self, Junior Self (how scary was your first day of junior forum?) Now think about who you are as your senior self. In only four years you have morphed into this new person. During these four years, whether you were conscious of it or not, you were being influenced by the people around you. We all should feel so lucky to have been surrounded by the types of people that grace the halls of HB. Teachers challenged us, classmates supported us, coaches prepared us, Mr. Christ painted the big picture for us and HB opened up the world for us.

You all have had different teachers, taken different classes, made different memories, but all of your high school experiences are connected to HB in some way.

Whether you realize it now or not, HB binds us together.

Recently, I was a part of the student panel at alumnae weekend. As I was speaking in front of the class of 1960, I imagined all of us there reminiscing in the same way they were. HB obviously has gone through many changes since they were students here but the common themes of academics, sisterhood and learning not for school but for life have remained constant since day

one at HB in 1876. The atmosphere in that room with those alums was pretty indescribable. I could feel the respect and the love they all felt for one another just by listening to their stories and watching how they interacted. To anyone behind me rolling their eyes and doubting me right now, I cannot wait to prove you wrong at our own 50-year reunion. You’ll see. You’ll feel it.

My friends would always tease me because after every speaker who came to HB during the school year, I’d either be moved to tears or say, “Hey, how cool would it be to do my senior project with THAT speaker?” I was inspired. They were without exception inspirational.

I realize the danger of an 18-year-old dispensing wisdom, but I am comfortable giving you one piece of advice: JUST STAY INSPIRED. Worry about the BEING inspiring for later on in life. For now, be present and be inspired by who and what is around you. You’ll find that actually allowing yourself to be open, to be inspired, will ultimately lead you to your passion.

Being a part of such an amazing school and senior class made writing this speech a cinch; but also makes this day that much harder. I know the goodbyes are temporary but leaving this special place isn’t easy. So seniors, please make me one promise. No matter what corner of the earth you are living in, no matter how busy your schedule is and no matter how old you may think you look, make time for our reunions. Trust me; you will be glad you did. But until then, class of 2010, I will truly miss all 82 of you. Thanks for being such amazing seniors and congratulations. We did it!

This is not your ordinary high school graduation.

Not because we aren’t wearing caps and gowns. Not because there is a beautiful fountain in front of us instead of a basketball hoop. And not because we all fit on one small set of bleachers. No. This is not your ordinary high school graduation because this class of seniors behind me is anything BUT ordinary.

Head’s Council Offers Advice and Insight;

Draws Inspiration from Current Students

“I think we all wish we could do it again!” Such was the reaction of Mona Meyers Wheatley ’52 after hearing from students, teachers and administrators at last fall’s Head’s Council session.

Essentially an alumnae think tank, the Head’s Council engages members in meaningful ways in the life of the school. Head’s Council members reflect as alumnae on the best ways to meet the educational challenges of a 21st century education. Their expertise, insight and advice culled together serve as a consulting resource to the Head of School toward the goal of a strong future for Hathaway Brown.

In October, about 40 distinguished alumnae from all over the country and from a variety of graduating classes gathered on HB’s campus to reconnect with the school and fellow alumnae. Begun in February 2009, the Head’s Council meets annually to provide advice, ideas and support to the Head of School on issues such as admissions and marketing, athletics, arts, alumnae outreach, philanthropy and more.

The packed and productive annual weekend included studentfacilitated discussions, presentations by Bill Christ, campus tours, a forum on the role of the Center for Global Citizenship in 21st century education and even a book discussion on the group’s “required reading”: Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.

“The weekend provided an opportunity to truly feel a kinship with everyone, including those remarkable young women,” said Meyers Wheatley. “Since returning to Massachusetts, my thoughts return daily to thinking about them and appreciating their environment and the talented teachers who nurture their brains, souls and spirits.”

Head’s Council members reconnect not only with the school, but with each other. As a group diverse in age and region, as well as professional and personal interests, members brought unique knowledge and expertise back to HB. Katherine Freygang ’70 thanked organizers for an “inspirational experience.” She recognized that “drawing on the talents and experience of alumnae with such a tight and potent program will undoubtedly serve HB well. We are so appreciative to be able to participate with the students ­— and as a bonus — ­ with each other.”

In the coming years, Head’s Council members will continue to serve as ambassadors of HB within their own communities and alumnae circles while offering their advice and knowledge to benefit the school.

This review in Midwest Book Review says it all: “Think ‘American wineries’ and at first you’ll think of California ­— and perhaps in modern times other states like New York may come to mind ­— but Ohio? Certainly it’s not high on the list of what one thinks of as wine regions, but here is Patricia Latimer’s Ohio Wine Country Excursions to provide the only comprehensive winery guide for Ohio, to expose Ohio’s growing vineyard industry. Very highly recommended for any either Ohio-bound or interested in the state’s blossoming wine regions.”

A beautiful and honest account of her son’s difficult and inspiring recovery from a severe car accident, Kasey to the Rescue has received a whole host of accolades. It was even excerpted in O, The Oprah Magazine’s November 2010 issue, where Rogers explains how a trained capuchin monkey saved her son’s sanity and maybe his life. It’s a must read!

Daughter of Xanadu will be published in January 2012 by Random House. It is historical fiction, set in China, told from the perspective of a granddaughter of Khubilai Khan, a 16-year-old Asian girl who joins the Mongol Army and falls in love with Marco Polo.

Patricia Latimer ’65 tells us her mother, Jean Miller Latimer (the longest-living member of the Class of 1929 and 1933 graduate of Smith College) celebrated her 100th birthday March 4, 2011. Jean started HB in the eighth grade on East 97th Street in Cleveland. During the ’60s and early ’70s, she worked in HB Alumnae Relations. Her lifetime interest in camping through the Girl Scouts, HB Day Camp, the Aloha Camps in Vermont and the Smith Outing Club, where she was president, continue to sustain her. On March 4, her birthday and the local kickoff of the Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial, she will be honored by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio for more than 85 years of exceptional service as president of the Cleveland Girl Scout Council and the Lake Erie Girl Scout Council, Scout leader and past winner of the 80-year Gold Award. Her love of people, books, the environment, the outdoors and her family and friends bring her eternal joy.

her home with daughter Marcie, an accomplished potter. No longer able to drive, Pat thanks Marcie and everyone who gets her beyond her front door Joan Bellamy May moved (some and patio. years ago) to a senior community in Haverford, Pa., staying close to the Philadelphia area where she raised her family of three. She looks forward to the college graduations of two granddaughters, one from Brown and one from George Washington University. She shares reading times, family times and residence activity times with her partner, Ward. They are both involved in grassroots politics and music; and Joan keeps her membership in The American Philosophical Society. ( Joan, I am IMPRESSED! I always admired your curiosities “outside-the-box.” You would have been a debate team star − but-we didn’t have one.)

Joan Wilson Hoogesteger and Paul are delighted with their retirement community life in Rochester, with swimming, exercise, classes and concerts. Of their latest course in existentialism, Joan remarks, “Good teacher; confusing subject.” Summer brings an annual family reunion with three children and five grandchildren (young adults now) at their Lake Huron cottage. Joan’s love of books continues but LARGE PRINT is a necessity now.

B.J. Caldwell Weimer has made “the leap” to Cleveland’s newest, extensive senior community, South Franklin Circle on the outskirts of Chagrin Falls. It literally abounds with familiar Shaker Heights and HB faces. B.J. continues to spend November through April on a Sanibel Island beach.

The December holidays were shared with two sons in California, and in May she will return there to celebrate, with all three sons, her 85-candle cake.

Emily Gaskill Veenstra also enjoys a “double” residence. Winter months are spent in Tequesta, Fla. (north of Palm Beach) and summers on the shores of Lake Leelanau, Mich. Emmy has treasured the summer season since childhood, close to cousins and her own children, Scott, Susan and David.

Sally Bassichis Wagner has sold her second home in Grosse Point, Mich. and is happy with full time

in Williamsburg, Va. The area’s historical wealth, the quality of adult education classes, her book club and social neighbors are enriching her life. (I fear my old rain check, to discover Williamsburg for myself, may expire if I don’t get a move on.)

Patricia Reid Dinsmore still has her devoted Robert by her side. They are still in Falmouth, Mass., where their five children thrived. Keeping in touch with their scattered family plus ten grandchildren and great-grand is a fun, time-consuming activity.

Pat is still an enthusiastic tennis player. Her major community services involve her church and time at the cat rescue center.

Now I turn to two non-graduates whose loyalty to HB has never wavered: Carol Quimby Heath (whose parents threw the best 13-14-year-olds’ Halloween party I can remember) left us after eighth grade when her father joined Yale’s Department of Music, and music continued to follow her when she married Fenno Heath, a trained musician. Fenno directed the Yale Glee Club and mentored The Whiffenpoofs for 39 years, and music has filled the lives of their four children and six grandchildren.

Carol volunteered in the music classes at a New Haven school adjacent to her senior community Anne Rogers Kronenberg also left residence. us after eighth grade for boarding school. She made nursing her career after college, training in Manhattan hospitals and eventually specializing as a psychiatric practitioner and diagnostic therapist.

In the ’70s Anne moved from Westport, Conn., where she experienced an annual Christmas Walk created by local shopkeepers. Then she moved to Nantucket Island to be near daughter Claudia and family. Nantucket is an established residential community as well as a popular tourist destination.

Local shopping was declining due to the opening of Cape Cod Mall. With help from friends, the Chamber of Commerce and some merchants, Anne preserved Christmas Stroll with bright lights, inviting shops, entertainment for children and hot seasonal beverages, which has become a Nantucket holiday tradition plus an economic boost

Last week, seven of “us” met at a restaurant called Palador on Chagrin Blvd. and had a great mini– reunion catching up with each other and are planning to get together in June for our group 80th birthdays! We know that a few of you youngsters have a year to go, but please come join us anyway!

Marias Spencer Hawley was there and said that she and Dudley visited Annie Lucas Garrett and Bill in Fox Chapel as well as their son and family who live in Pittsburgh.

Speaking of Bill and Annie Lucas Garrett, they sent a beautiful Christmas card about their trip to Russia. The card was a magnificent print of a view of St. Petersburg.

Sandy Rittinger Davis joined us and always has news to share. She spends about five months at her favorite spot in Maine, just a ferry ride from the old Barker place on Monhegan Island from Port Clyde.

Julie Smith Siegel braved the snow and drove in from Painesville. It was so good to be with her after missing her for several years. Her daughter Libby’s husband, Tim Hill, had the lead role in “The Producers” last summer at the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre. Julie is still doing lots of volunteer work in Painesville and is as cheerful and positive as ever!

She said that she and her husband make a good “one

person” team − her mind and his body both function well! I love it!

Joanie Skall Kaufman added much to our gathering. Her volunteer work is playing the piano at places like Judson Park, and she had a great idea of wishing to play Scrabble with Prime students to help them learn to spell and read!

Betsy Frolking McBride has offered to host our 80th birthday party. We can each bring something. (I’ll try to get the old Hough Bakery birthday cake for a sentimental taste treat!)

Jane Van Fossan arranged our gathering place at Palador, and is an example for all of us in her regular fitness program with swimming and exercise! I go with Gerry when the spirit moves me to water aerobics and balance and weight-training classes at South Franklin Circle, where we have thoroughly enjoyed our first year.

Jane also tells us about a special canine friend: “The photo in this issue of me with Guinness was taken in the summer of 2010.

She was given the name Guinness as she was born on St. Patrick’s Day. I first saw her when she was just a tiny little baby girl. Now, more than a year later, she is a great big girl but the sweetest one I’ve ever known. She made my summer special as she often visited her ‘grandparents’ (my neighbors) overnight.

HB physical education teacher, Shannon Liber Molloy ’88, is her owner and must take responsibility for turning Guinness into such a loveable and sweet Labradoodle. Almost daily she would come galloping over from Shannon’s parents’ condo to my patio for a short visit, hugs and tummy rub during the summer, and each time I was with her I experienced much joy and love from and for this wonderful big puppy. Now that winter has set in and grandparents are south enjoying warm temperatures, I don’t get to see her. Nevertheless, I still like to think of her as my therapy dog and miss her very much. She made my summer very special.

Jane continues, “Ginnie Richardson Rutledge, my good friend who moved to Seattle 5½ years ago, and I keep in touch with frequent phone calls.

Ginnie and Bob are enjoying their three grandchildren who come often to visit with their son, Bruce, and wife, Yuko. Kimico, the eldest at age 14, is smarter than smart; Kate is 10 and a basketball star at her middle school and Kenzo, 8, has turned into a Lego genius. Their other son, Professor Dr. David Rutledge, also visits whenever he has time off from his college duties at the University of New Judy Johnson Goetz is moving to a Orleans. brand-new high-rise apartment for senior living in Milwaukee when it’s ready. We’ll see her in Tucson in March in between her preparations for her move.

I hope to go to an opera simulcast with her while she’s here.”

Christmas notes arrived from Janet Nutt Lembke. She sent me her new book, “Harvests,” which I wasn’t able to buy from the local stores, because there are only 100 copies published.

I’m excited to have #15 − a signed copy that I’ve lent to Nancy Kadow Treadway while Gerry and I are in Tucson. It is so interesting even to one who is not a gardener, because of her writing style and her talent incorporating nature and animal stories and even

poetry into this 30-page, exquisitely handmade book about the size of the three-ring notebook paper on which I’m writing these notes! Nancy, by the way, was not able to make the get-together because she is convalescing from heart surgery and respiratory difficulties suffered in December. Her spirits are good and she’s recuperating very well.

Marlene Redmond Lowe missed our gathering by one day.

She and Ken were flying to Naples the day before we met.

Shirley Brown Dawson is busy in the community where I’ve seen her at various functions such as the orchestra, the art museum and HB gatherings.

Ginnie Richardson Rutledge sent a wonderful Christmas card photo of her grandchildren.

Janet Donald Miller and family sent their annual card from Elkhorn Ranch, where Gerry and I go every March for a week. She and Bob spent Thanksgiving and Christmas at the ranch, but live in Tucson.

As many of you know, Joanie Miller Lynn’s husband, Jim, passed away peacefully after a long time in nursing care. Joanie went every day to be at his side and help at lunchtime. We all send our love and condolences to Joanie and her daughters and son. The articles in The New York Times and the Cleveland Plain Dealer were a beautiful tribute to a fine father, husband and Joyce Duncan Siebens sends news: “I’m citizen. into my third year here at Rose Villa and am finally feeling it is really my ‘home.’ There are so many adjustments to make, especially if you move out of state. But I am not one bit sorry I decided to do this.

Especially as I note how much snow has been dumped on the Midwest and East. Here we put up with a winter of rain. But it all brings glorious green plants and flowers spring, summer and fall. All is okay with me and the family and my happiest news is that the Prolotherapy injections given by a local naturopath in 2010 really have made me almost pain-free. And, to add to my recovery, I have been doing water therapy and adding a gentle Yoga class.

And our campus encourages us to walk everywhere for whatever we need outside of our units. Our daughter, Sue, who is married to Paul, retired from the CIA three years ago (terrorist analyst) and has been filling in her free time with volunteer work associated with Schnitzer Hall and related Portland halls that feature opera, ballet and live plays. But just a couple of weeks ago, she returned from South Korea, where she volunteered to join eight other women from the West Coast to coach better spoken English with 11- and 12-year-old children. She was sponsored by the Presbyterian Church, who covered the airfare and provided the curriculum of study.

These kids were on a two-week break from regular school (which runs all year long, with mini-breaks such as this). She found the students eager to learn with only minimal behavioral problems compared to many American schools (reinforcing what we hear in the States about how the Asian schools far exceed ours, especially in science and math). for the whole community. Her professional practice continues (out of her home) as she actively serves on the Interfaith Council, her local church and the Suicide Prevention Coalition.

And now yours truly, Mary Bruner. I am 95 percent in good shape.

I get a shot once a month for macular degeneration in my left eye (no complaints) but I do complain about achy feet and I will never join a hiking club (the price I’m paying as a former smoker). None of this really interferes with a very satisfying, active life: two book clubs; an investment group, occasional inspiring senior classes and the constant challenge to perfect my skills on my computerized sewing / embroidery machine. Plus a special pleasure: I spend three mornings as week at an inner city school, where I am free to create my own lessons as I work one-on-one with 5- and 6-year-olds. Once a career teacher, the beat goes on. Come late February, I make my annual drive to Quebec to gather with 200 senior lady curlers, then on to London, Ontario to join an arena of curling devotees as we cheer on Canada’s top provincial men’s teams at The Brier to win the title of Team Canada 2011. Home by car, then a plan ride to visit B.J. in Sanibel, Fla. These wonderful visits completed, my thoughts turn to my home north of the border and rejoining my Canadian family for year 77 in The Thousand Islands.

I regret there are names missing in this ’44 update. For those who have kept in touch, I have just three words: You Go Girls!

York: “For two decades Ann Gilkey Ware has brought her feminist insights, her remarkable memory and her love of poetry to the Book Group that has now read and explored together 392 books.

She has been a talented discussion leader of the group, which started in July 1983 in our minister’s study. Shortly thereafter it began meeting in Ann’s home in Brooklyn Heights, but after she was diagnosed with lung cancer nine years ago it resumed meeting here at the church. Against great odds, Ann has been in remission and, even after a more recent hip replacement surgery, she continues to attend worship regularly, often accompanied by long-time friend Gloria Furman, who introduced her to First Unitarian. As a key member of our Arts Committee, Ann has both planned our art shows and contributes to them, sharing her talents and bringing beauty to our community. We are also fortunate that she was influential in securing Margaret Cusack’s stitched artwork, in memory of FUUB leader Jacqueline Beaulieu, ‘A Question of Balance,’ which is hanging in the Frances White Room and depicted on cards used to contact the homebound. Whether serving as secretary of the Women’s Alliance, working at Unifair set-up, running Unifair’s coffee table or staffing the welcome table, Ann’s graciousness is appreciated by all. In 2002 the Women’s Alliance held a Crone Ceremony to reclaim the word “crone,” which often is used derogatorily. Originally a laudatory word meaning “wise woman,” First U chose Ann among six crones who are “revered for their insights and honored for their knowledge.” Ann, we salute you.

I hope all of you who haven’t been in touch will send some news of yourselves. As we approach our 80th year it’s so special to know about each one whom we knew 62 years ago. There are 36 of us, or 74 percent of our class, still in various stages of good! Here’s to all of us!

Congdon and husband Ted spent Thanksgiving in Jalisco, Mexico at son Jonathan’s house. At home in Pasadena, Calif., Eleanor takes yoga classes at Caltech, and busies herself with grandchildren and being a docent at the Norton Simon Museum.

Sue Minsel Cobbledick and husband Dorn have become great-grandparents of a baby girl. Lessa’s parents are in Richmond, Va., where her mother is in medical school and her father is a teacher. The happy and proud grandpa is Sue and Dorn’s son Paul.

Terry Brown Rostamo spent 10 days in Europe with her granddaughter touring Croatia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. Terry also played in the military golf tournament in San Marcus.

Margie West Hiser sent a photo of herself at her home at Thetford, Vt. Margie and her husband, Hal, now reside at Kendal at Hanover in Hanover, N.H. Sandy Shepard Armstrong and her husband are off to Africa again. They spent the Christmas holiday with their daughter Heather and grandson Sasha in Ghana. Heather works for the U.S. Agency for International Development. They Margo Joyce will return to the U.S. in March.

Hardie writes that she and her husband, Jim, love their North Carolina mountain home in Big Canoe.

They both had hip replacements seven years ago and now use canes. Margo and Jim have two children and they raised two others. They now have five grandchildren.

Bebe Balkwill McGee and her daughter, Cat, drove to Cleveland in October, where they had lunch with the girls in “the lunch bunch.”

A good time was had by all! Bebe came to Cleveland again for Christmas to celebrate the holiday with her sister Sue Balkwill Cass ’50 and family.

As for me, Joyce Ruppel Kane, I can’t believe we have been out of HB for 60 years! Please try to come to our Reunion May 20-22. It should be a fun time!

The class news, from Judy Starr Batzer Bronner: Well, ladies … here we are coming up on our 55th college reunion (oh m’gawd!). This will be my ‘literary’ farewell. Sheila Todd called the school and kindly offered to take over, so I shall retire my gold and brown pen. She will have her inaugural column in the fall.

Unbeknownst to me, HB sent letters to all our classmates for news with envelopes addressed to me. I got three back … THREE people who could afford 44 cents!

Janie Sawyer Welch reports from Oakland that she’s finally

going to be a grandmother. After four miscarriages, Liz (her youngest) is six months pregnant (as of 1-1-11) with a boy. She goes on to say, “I still play golf (badly) and design needlepoint and am doing Jane a lot of pottery, which sells sporadically.”

MacDonald Healy writes of all their activities, too numerous to elaborate in full. What I liked best was the trip she and Tom (bravely) took to London with two grandchildren for their 16th birthdays … “great despite a series of weather catastrophes.

Fortunately, we were both lucky and experienced in travel glitches.” Jane’s (she admonishes me not to call her “Mac”) latest book is “Different Learners: Identifying, Preventing and Treating Your Child’s Learning Problems.” I happened on a quote from her in a 10-10-10 New York Times article that decried rigid spelling programs for three-year-olds.

A note from Jan Truhlar Sharp finds her living in The Villages, a 55+ golf cart community. They fill their time with Duplicate Bridge ( Jan plays in regional tournaments) and cruising. I would add that there are tons of activities and when we visited there (in Ocala, about 2½ hours north of us) we loved their herd of real buffalo and cocktails in the gazebo on the green. She invites all ’52ites to visit.

As you know from the only squib in our last column, Carolyn Biggar Karch now lives in a condo in Chagrin Falls. Sadly, George died in September of pulmonary fibrosis. He will be missed. Carolyn will make her usual trip to Sanibel for a month this March to hang out with Allison Osborne Titgemeier, Joanie Mackinnon Houghton, Mona Meyers Wheatley and whoever else might be there.

I just found out that Jay DeJong ( Judy Lees) and Jack are living in a nonprofit life care community − Vicar’s Landing, about five minutes from their former house in Ponte Vedra, Fla. My sister Lynne Batzer Klopf ’57 also lives there. It is a truly classy place. We wish we had something comparable on the Treasure Coast, but no such luck.

Sheila Todd also lives in Ponte Vedra, but not at Vicar’s.

From Linda Polk Furber, great pictures of her seven grandchildren at “Cousin Camp” in Olympia, Wash. in Summer 2010. She and Jim spent two weeks in Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro and took a 50th anniversary cruise from Venice to Barcelona. Linda says, “We’re doing well, though everything takes longer these days.” I imagine we Last August while cruising could all say that. in New England, Freddie and I, Judy Starr Batzer Bronner, went ashore in Nantucket and stopped in the quaint little bus station to ask a question. Lo and behold, there was Mona Meyers Wheatley behind the desk − her summer job! That won the “It’s a small world” prize.

So, guys, I hope you will continue to keep me on your Christmas lists, and do send Sheila all your news. Maybe Freddie and I will do something exciting so I can send her news, too!

In Santa Monica, Calif., Fielden Willmott Harper continues her creative life as an artist and teacher. Her website displays some of her paintings and multimedia constructions, many of which depict buildings. In an interview quoted on the site, she said, “I paint, sew, make assemblages, garden, cook, hold my grandchildren and tell them stories − it is all part of a whole. I think you can find traces of my thinking and my style in all that I do. I have always been fascinated by the way in which Man has chosen to enclose space. I love the way the light changes on buildings throughout the day.”

Donna Watkins Zorge spends the cooler months in Hilton Head, S.C., where she has been active in working on a luncheon and fashion show to benefit the Hilton Head Symphony and Youth Orchestra.

Oriel Eaton has been traveling since she stopped working (“at least for the time being”). She took her granddaughter Sarah to Costa Rica as a 13th birthday present. They went sea kayaking and white water rafting; Oriel was impressed that she managed to stay in the boats. Oriel also enjoyed ruins and antiquities in Turkey during a September trip with her sister Nancy and her husband. Swimming in cobalt blue waters was also a highlight. France and Bali are destinations for 2011 − we hope she can fit in Cleveland for our Reunion!

Former classmate Agnes Gund was honored in December by the New York Women’s Foundation with the Stepping Up Award for Studio in a School, a nonprofit organization she established in 1977 in response to budget cuts that virtually eliminated arts education from New York City public schools. Mayor Bloomberg praised Agnes as having “singlehandedly changed our city’s cultural landscape.” The photo in The New York Times showed Agnes looking spectacular.

Sally Ruppel Coffey, who was listed as “lost,” is living with her daughter Carla Johnson in Jacksonville, Fla., having moved from Massachusetts a few years ago.

Libby Hornung Smith-Holmes, have continued my involvement in arts, history, environmental and land trust organizations in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Tim and I took a quick trip to Florida in January to celebrate our tenth anniversary and are back to oversee some home renovation projects and to plan a new book on local history. I hope to see as many of you as possible in Cleveland May 20 and 21 for our 55th Reunion!

Pamela deWindt Burke writes, “What a wonderful Reunion we had, and Dan and I loved having everybody there Friday night. It was relaxed with loads of laughter and great memories.

Both Saturday lunch and dinner just seemed to build on those feelings so that, by the end of the evening, I think we all felt like great friends again.

My girls have had lots going on this fall. Heather Steck Von Seggern ’85 has a new job as college advisor at The Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla. This is an interesting school, as it is on the IMG campus and most of the students are great athletes from around the world, training full time and looking either for athletic scholarships to college or to return to their home countries and play their sport professionally. Knowing Heather, the seniors will all be placed in the right schools by spring.

Megan Steck Berg ’87, an attorney in Bozeman, Mont., has also taken a new position as associate head of the Montana State University Foundation.

Because her expertise is in tax and estate planning, this is the perfect position. It includes some travel, hopefully east at times, where Eliza is a sophomore at Berkshire School in Massachusetts. Betsy Steck Wright ’90 still teaches Spanish at Euclid High School, and she and Brian had a little girl, Kylie Elizabeth Wright, in November. She joins Tyler, 4, who is into all sports, both playing and watching. Grammy is his accomplice. Work for me is still full time, but since the stock and bond markets have been less volatile in 2010, I am still enjoying it. I wish everybody a healthy New Year in 2011.”

Mary Clark Minor writes, “While it was hard to believe we were having our 50th Reunion, it’s equally hard to believe it was in May, many months ago. Time goes by so fast. My whole family made it to Cleveland for Christmas.

We had a wonderful time, even with the freezing temperatures and lots of snow. I’m very grateful for all of them. My sweet dog Micro died in October after eight weeks of trying to nurse him back to health (he had an abscessed liver). In November I got another dog, Chloe, a Shepherd. Buffy and I welcomed her, and she is a doll. I have had at least two rescue dogs my last 30 years. That is one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.”

A telephone call with Diana Coulton Beebe updated me on her news. Diana’s daughter Elizabeth brought the family to Delaware for Christmas with Diana and John. The big snowstorm that weekend gave them an unusual and huge amount of snow for the girls to play in.

The granddaughters are Julia, a ninth grader, and Sarah, who is in sixth grade at the Fay School. The Fay School, which has a highly international student body, is also where Elizabeth works.

Diana and John are doing well. Diana continues her activities with the Headmistresses of the East.

Joyce Listerman Martin and her husband, Gene, continue to travel as much as they ever did.

In the last year, most trips took them around the U.S. and visits to children and grandchildren.

Here is Joyce’s account: “We are really into grandparenting, expecting No. 6 on Valentine’s Day in Minnesota. This will be my third February visit there, where their cold weather is serious!

After Reunion, we traveled to Ottawa, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina, the Santa Fe Opera and back to New York to babysit younger daughter Lauren’s 9-month-old, Eaton. Lauren and her husband took their first vacation since his birth. In October, we went to South Carolina again for Gene’s reunion. November took us on a quick trip to Madrid and Barcelona, my first visit since I lived in Madrid 45 years ago. Upon our return, we immediately went to New York again to help celebrate Eaton’s first birthday. All the kids came for Thanksgiving: 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds. Lots of fun and noisy! When they all departed, Gene and I went to bed at 8:30, exhausted!”

A most welcome letter came from Jackie Castle Ronstadt in Arizona. She writes: “My biggest regret for 2010 was the fact that I had to miss my 50th high school reunion at HB My husband and I were sick with whooping cough from late April until the end of August! What a hideous disease that is, and it is coming east − I urge everyone to get a pertussis vaccine! We spent time this past summer in Flagstaff, Ariz. It is a great place to go when it’s 105 or more in Tucson. Our son Philip and daughter-in-law Christina both work for Disney Studios in Burbank, Calif. − he is in media prints and she works to promote all of the Disney ‘products’ (toys, DVDs, CDs, games, etc). They love it and both are doing well. Olivia is 8 and is in third grade. She loves to act, sing and dance. Our daughter, Mindy, is married to David, a high-school Spanish teacher. Mindy is a singer, but mostly stays home with her children. Now that Levi, 6, is in school full time, Mindy will hopefully be able to find a part-time job. Mia is 8 and in third grade. Everyone was here for Christmas, and we all had so much fun. It is such a blessing that they all get along so well. My husband, Peter, had to have a heart valve replacement this past September. 2010 was not a great year for him. He is doing really well now, so we’re both looking forward to a healthy and happy The past year has taken Brannon 2011!”

Heath and her family on an intense, eventful journey that has brought her husband, Don Ziegler, through a double lung transplant.

Brannon reports that she and Don both are doing well, and that Don continues to grow stronger with good function in his lungs. A year ago the couple was actively searching for a transplant after Don was turned down by the first program he applied to. Family and friends continued to inquire and network. Through a friend of Brannon’s daughter Tyler, they were encouraged to apply to the Pittsburgh transplant program where Don eventually received his new lungs on July 10, 2010.

Being on the list required Brannon and Don to move close to Pittsburgh. Brannon describes her location there: “On April 24, we arrived in Pittsburgh and settled into our tiny but charming apartment in Shadyside for six months. Pittsburgh gets a bum rap from East Coast folks. It is a terrific town. We made some new friends; I learned the value of a good gym and personal trainer; and I rediscovered my love of writing in a creative nonfiction course.” At the time of writing, Brannon and Don are home in New York, with plans to move to California for three months, residing in Tiburon near Tyler and her husband, Johnny, as well as close to Jan Bicknell Sargent in Sausalito. Brannon continues her news as follows: “I am hoping Bonnie will join us in California for at least the month of February; I am now scouting for an apartment for her. Together we will explore the area, see where we might like to live more permanently. Bon is considering a 55 and older community. Does anyone know of good 55+ communities near the San Francisco area? …

Although we are both still technically on leave from our schools, we are certainly leaning toward retirement and a chance to do new things. Our address for three months will be 17 Channel Landing, Tiburon, CA 94920. I will use my cell, 914.844.3291. We would love to see anyone in the area.”

Zibby Farran Tozer writes from New York: “Reunion was very special for me. I saw so many old friends whom I had not seen for years. I am still working designing senior citizen buildings for the poor elderly in New York City. I have joined the board of trustees at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. I spend about four months a year at our Park City, Utah, house. And I am totally crazy about the game of bridge. I play duplicate bridge From California, three to four days a week.”

Jan Bicknell Sargent wrote to say how much she, too, enjoyed Reunion, and what fun it was to see everyone. Jan and Dave’s grown children visited for Christmas: daughter Nina, who lives in New York, and son Dave with his wife Katie and children, Jack, 5, and Claire, 2, who live nearby in San Anselmo. Then on to Tahoe, where they looked forward to experiencing 15 feet of snow.

Jan is greatly looking forward to Brannon Heath and her husband, Don, moving to California.

A wonderful trip to France in September became a celebration for Kate Shockey LaFrance and her

wonderful seeing and connecting with everyone after all these years. We took eight children (all 8 and under) to the Jersey beach in July, followed by a trip to Banff, Vancouver and Victoria, Canada.

Beautiful sights. We then went to Albuquerque, N.M. in October to see our three grandsons, ages 9, 7, and 6, and our daughter Susan, 39, who is a full-time lawyer and lead singer for two bands.

Her husband, Paul, is an engineer for Intel. Son Chris, 41, has moved to Boston with his wife and 3-year-old daughter. He got a new job, which he likes. We are waiting for an invitation to visit. Our granddaughters, 4 and 1, live five blocks away, so we see them every day and do a lot of babysitting.

Our daughter Sharon, 38, is a web page designer, and her husband works in the family medical business. I’m still working as a recovery room RN once a week, but plan on retiring this year. I go to Curves three times a week, Pilates and Zumba once a week each, and am on the board of our adult school. I belong to the garden club, a women’s club and Questers. I try to get to NYC every other month. I am so looking forward to

spring and no snow. It has been a long winter, and it is only January. Happy and healthy 2011 to everyone.”

Sadly, Anne Hauserman Mehring lost her husband, Jeffrey, on January 7 of this year.

Jeff had experienced more than one health challenge in recent years, but his death was not expected at the time. Anne and Jeff met at Ohio State after she transferred there and would have been married 46 years in 2011. Our sympathy goes out to Anne.

husband, John, as they rejoiced in their good health and 20 years of marriage. They toured much of the French countryside, starting in Toulouse and proceeding through the Dordogne and Loire valleys to Mont-Saint-Michel, Bayeux, the Normandy Beaches and Giverny, then into Paris.

They enjoyed it all, but were most intrigued and surprised by the elegance and history of the Bayeux Tapestry. Grandchildren in Nashville have been busy, Claire on a softball championship team; Caroline as part of the grand champion group in a regional gymnastic and cheering competition; Christina as a student driver, honors student and Young Life participant. In Boston, she and John helped daughter Holly turn 40 and Anna, 2, with a party encouraged by husband and dad, Phil. Kate writes, “A highlight this year for me was my 50th Reunion. Two-thirds of our class returned to Cleveland for the event and the laughter and good feelings were nonstop for three days.”

am fortunate, as well, to have wonderful colleagues in the Early Childhood Division, including its director, Jane Brown. She is an inspiring leader who makes herself accessible to all her teachers for matters big and little!

The weekend of November 4-6 was the huge Education Innovation Summit at HB. I volunteered for it every day and had the pleasure of being able to spend quite a bit of time with Debby Paul Wise. We caught up with each other’s lives and shared memories of our years at HB. Debby, who is a creative special education teacher, is devoted to her students! She was really excited to see HB as it is now and hopes to return for the 50th Reunion in 2014. I sincerely hope many of you will consider doing the same!

I assure you we will have a good time! I have three years to think about how we can have fun together.

It was wonderful to receive an email from Jean Hutton Pinckard in January: “Your first Class of ’64 notes spurred me on to email my news. Never thought I’d end up in Las Vegas, of all places! I’m retired, but stay active counseling seniors at a local women’s center and do some writing when I’m not in our swimming pool or our lovely garden designed by my daughter, Hillary.

Recently Bill and I returned from an idyllic Lake Tahoe Christmas gathering with my kids Drew (from Boston) and Hillary (from San Francisco) and their families. Great cabin in the snow, skiing and sledding, games by the fireplace. Grandkids Max (12) and Jesse (7) are a pure delight, as is our grandpuppy Willa. Drew teaches at Neighborhood School, which both Max and Jesse attend.

Tomorrow I’m off to Naples, Fla. to see my mother and stay with Diane Horsburgh Thompson. We keep in touch and have fun when we get together.

With all the changes aging brings, friendships which endure are treasures.”

I close my letter to you with sad news from Jill Andrews Day. She wrote that Richard, her husband, died in early December after a long illness. We send our deepest condolences to Jill and her daughter, Megan, and her son, Kevin. Her address is 271 Mountaire Circle, Clayton, CA 94517.

Louisa Meacham Scott writes, “I was sorry to miss those of you who came to Reunion.

Liz Babcox, Patricia Latimer, Anne Winant Higerd and I had a fun time getting together to brainstorm the party but, alas, my mother was very ill at the time and died soon after. I am so grateful to Kit Schneider Sawyer for hosting the gathering at her home. My news is that I have a grandson! His name is Samuel (Sam) Scott Vaena and he is the one-year-old son of our daughter Kelly and her husband, Marcos. Sam was born in Cleveland just over a year ago, spent five months with us this summer and fall with Kelly and is now on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Island, where his father is with the World Bank. Kelly is getting them all settled into a house and trying to figure out how to keep her heart and soul together for the projected three years there. They live in Honiara, which is the capital, but there is not much to do there. Fortunately with Third World jobs the hiring of a nanny is expected, and Sam loves his, so I am hoping Kelly will find an online project to keep her involved. John, our son Gordon and I are trying to plan a trip to Australia where we will meet the Vaenas and Nana can spend all her time hugging and kissing Sam. Our son Gordon lives in Boston, is very happy there and is very successful as an analyst with Fidelity. He was home for Christmas and it was wonderful to have him all to ourselves. When the baby is here he often moves to second fiddle, so we were happy to enjoy him and get him some ‘face time.’ John and I are retired and the days are full of doing things we enjoy doing. I have discovered watercolors and am loving painting. We go to France as often as possible and have some wonderful pictures John and I have taken, so it is thrilling to relive southern France through line and color.”

Nancy Tillinghast tells us, “2010 was packed with travel to see Longin/Tillinghast family east and west and lots of interesting volunteer activity. Though continuing to work/consult in retirement, Tom and I are most especially enjoying time spent with our grandchildren. They are the light of our lives! In addition to a very fun 45th Reunion in May 2010, I traveled to Cleveland last fall for a weekend program at HB. The multiple side benefits of that visit were connecting with alumnae I hadn’t seen since graduation 45+ years ago, seeing old friends and meeting NEW friends who know old friends! and I enjoyed a long lunch together. I know you join me in offering condolences to Em and her family, who lost her Dad just prior to our 45th Reunion weekend. Sisters Carolyn White Barr and Margaret White Ziering ’68 both turned heads when I saw them at an HB reception and called out the old nickname ‘Whitey!’ I caught up with three of my sister Carolyn Tillinghast Powers ’61’s classmates, Harriet Holan Wolfe ’61, Judith Farrington Swartwood ’61 and Martha Shierson Harding ’61, as well as Ginny Thomas Wydler ’82, a dear friend of a family with whom I shared wonderful summers on Cuttyhunk Island, “It was a pleasure to meet Marlo Mass.”

Coleman Bendau Rees ’66, founder of her own company, One Nations Films, LLC. Marlo has put me back in touch with our classmate Chellis Glendinning. Chellis shares with us that she has moved to Bolivia from New Mexico and is living in a casita with a straw mattress outside Cochabamba. She has two books in the hands of an agent in NY, one called Adios, the story of her migration. She is also still writing essays for US publications and radio features for KUNM-FM. “My last radio series, “Un Rinconcito en el Cielo,” won the Southwest Broadcasters Association best news feature for 2010. Mostly I am living in wonder about being here in Bolivia and how marvelously different/same is the human spirit.”

Nancy Tillinghast continues, “One of the best experiences of my last year has been reconnecting with HB. Following our 45th reunion, I was asked to participate in the HB’s Head’s Council, a group of 30-50 alumnae who come together in October for a weekend of information gathering, sharing and giving to current HB students, faculty and staff. I cannot begin to tell you how much fun we had interacting with 9-12th graders and their teachers in the classroom, over lunch and in interactive seminars.

Earlier this year, she sent us all a recap of some of the things that she learned about HB today.

Several members of the class asked about some book recommendations for book clubs, and here are some recent book club favorites: Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson, Bruno: Chief of Police by Martin Walker, Blame by Michelle Huneven and Ms. Hempel Chronicles by Sarah Bynum. Sarah was a New Yorker magazine pick for one of the 20 best fiction writers under 40.

Pixie Lilley Gentry says her biggest news is that her son, Stephen, is engaged. She is splitting her time between her granddaughters and raising a dog for Guide Dogs for the Blind. She also sees Katie Parsons Tolve several times a year. Katie is still doing agility events with her border collie, and even went to the nationals in Kentucky and placed in the Grand Prix event there.

Pat Hackenburg Laflin writes from Destin, Fla., where she and husband Gordon are spending the winter. They are playing a lot of golf, riding bikes, swimming and generally having a great time.

When they are back home in Hudson, Pat is a greenskeeper at the golf course, and Gordon works in the pro shop. This past summer, Pat’s family had a reunion at her brother’s home in South Carolina, with 56 people attending! They all will try to do it again in December for a niece’s wedding in Minneapolis. On their way back to Ohio, Pat will

visit Joanie Beatty Flester in Virginia.

Joanie Beatty Flester says that she and husband Andy have just about finished the house and barn at their new farm near Charlottesville, Va. They and their horses are settling in well. In spring they will continue work on the landscaping and other outdoor projects. They love the new location.

Maureen Magee writes that she has booked a trip to go camel riding across the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. What more can be said about that?! She promises lots of great stories when she returns.

Catherine Holsen went to England last summer for a week to sing and learn about early music at the Tallis Scholars Summer School. It was such a wonderful experience that she applied again and has been accepted for next year! She is still an ESL instructor at Vanderbilt University. On a sad note, her 16-year-old dachshund passed away last summer. However, they have adopted two dachshunds from a rescue, and are thoroughly Sukie Klie Schroeder writes enjoying them. to say that she and Tim had surgery two days apart this year, but have healed and were about to hit the slopes!

Sally Ainsworth Anderson writes that she has just returned from four months in Jönköping, Sweden (between Stockholm and Copenhagen), where she taught English and American History and Culture to 14 college-age Swedish students. The students are now spending the spring semester at North Park University in Chicago, where she is the library director. She loved the experience, and also was able to meet up with her husband and travel to Italy, France, Denmark and Sweden. She says it’s great to be home now, in time to welcome grandbabies number 3 and 4!

Amelia Craig writes in that she is busy with two jobs and a puppy! She has a small psychotherapy practice where she sees clients two days a week. She also works as a private fiduciary, which she very nicely explained means that she acts as a trustee to administer probated estates or as conservator/guardian for people who can no longer handle their financial affairs. All this in Carmel, Calif.! Last summer she took a trip to Denmark and England to visit friends and also the two families she lived with during her junior year abroad. She loves Carmel and the outdoor life there. She would love to see any classmates Marlo Coleman venturing out her way.

Bendau Rees says that she and Penelope Young Feather got together one day last summer, and had a wonderful time catching up on the past 30 years. She has visited HB twice in the last two years and is amazed at what the school has become. As a result, she is trying to fund a project that she would produce with the school’s science and television departments called Video Reports: Science for Girls. In the meantime, she is working on marketing her latest film, which will air on PBS, www.rising-thefilm.com.

I, Marilyn Watts, am still enjoying life on the ranch. I wound up taking early retirement a few months ago since the job market was still so slow. It’s working out

fine for now, and I’m happy. What more can be said? Thanks for all your cards and letters (er, emails!), and have a great year!

Molly Bolton Hooper writes: “I know there’s been a huge diaspora from Cleveland in our class − myself included, as I live in California. However, I return annually to Cleveland, having family there and a continued attachment to the life and landscape. For those of you who haven’t been back recently, news articles reveal Cleveland’s continued economic decline. It has lost half its population since the 1960s, despite significant improvements to the downtown. These are tough times for the Midwest and our country − a time when all of us, at some level, need to be engaged in thinking beyond our own well-being. I don’t think I’ll rant about the current political logjam, but there’s a lot to be worried about. On a personal note, my husband, Jock, and I continue to divide our time between San Francisco and our farm in Mendocino County. Go to www.Oz-Farm.com and have a tour. Our three children are essentially adults and gaining traction professionally − son Nate, 30, as a graphic designer; Hannah, 28, a fine artist and rock & roll singer with the band Grouplove (coming out with an album this summer under Atlantic Records); and Rachel, 25, working for Arion Press, a fine press limited edition publishing house in San Francisco. In the past year I’ve had the fun of seeing Susie Manuel while she was vacationing in Sausalito and Linda Kent Boothby, who lives near my mother in Florida. I place a high value on staying in touch with friends, so let me know if you come through town.”

Deecie McNelly Denison writes, “Somehow the excitement/chaos of my life in my 30s, 40s even 50s has eased and the days have become more tranquil. I miss the rush of adrenaline from work projects, the busy hours with people, boards, teaching, etc., but not so much that I want to go back to it. If someone had told me 30 years ago that I would seek solitude, prefer to be alone or with one person at a time, I would have laughed. But that is precisely where I am. Even so, I wonder, what have I done? I certainly haven’t solved any critical issues. Maybe I have made a positive influence on some people, but I will never know. Actually I feel more selfish, but selfish about different things like time alone but more time for individual people. Of my seven grandchildren I am most involved with my stepdaughter’s kids, the three youngest of whom are 10, 12 and 13. The older four, two by each stepson, are moving onto their own lives and careers. Two are 21, one is 18 and the last is 15. I

than 80 wineries located in and among the many new ones in the Lake Erie and Ohio River Valley AVAS, the Isle St. George and Grand River Valley AVAS and the Heartlands. More than a century and half ago, near Cincinnati, viticulturist Jean Jacques Defour, millionaire Nicholas Longworth, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, entrepreneur John Michael Meier and other pioneers gave birth to the Ohio wine industry. Their fascinating stories unfolded beneath Cincinnati’s hillside cellars and the Lake Erie Islands’ vineyards, heightened by the drama of love, war, passion, Prohibition, the 1960s Ohio vitis vinifera revolution and the 21st century wine industry expansion. Since the 1850s, Ohio was world famous for the cultivation of the Catawba grape and the quality of its wines.

Longworth produced a Rhine-style Catawba wine and America’s first champagne. am deeply grateful for all of them and they are a joy to be with. We are actually moving into college graduation season with them! My animals fill all the interstices of life. The dogs require constant love and attention and the horses need management, exercise and carrots. Oh, and there is a husband who needs to know there is someone in the house along with him! As an aside about my dog Windsor, he will most likely be my last Bernese Mountain Dog after having them for 30 years. He is the biggest and goofiest of all, and is a few rungs short, if you know what I mean. In his four years he has suffered ACL surgery, bilateral elbow surgery, bloat and the trauma of losing five inches of intestine due to having swallowed a tennis ball! I have started playing the piano again after too many years off and it is soaking a very dry part of my soul. Beth Body Armstrong and I remain bosom buddies … with a little more bosom than we had at HB! Probably the most important person in my life remains my sister, Cooey (Cleo McNelly Kearns ’61). Her husband passed away this fall and she plans to move up to Vermont full time in the spring. Although we don’t have to live near each other, it will be wonderful to have her there full time … even though I am not here for five months. I’ve got achy joints from age and activity, a few wounds from horse falls, too much weight and gray hair. I suspect we all will be writing these same words. I’ve just gotten out to California (I drive each way every year and it takes five days) and I am feeling weary and missing home already. There is always a third-day slump and that is right now. But Sunday I have treated myself to super-duper tickets to see the Cavaliers in San Francisco with a friend of mine. I hope anyone who is in the vicinity of Fairlee, Vt. or Carmel Valley, Calif. will please call and come for a visit.”

Beth Body Armstrong sends greetings to all and is busy as a choral director and piano teacher in Bristol, R.I. She has two beautiful granddaughters, with another girl due in March.

She and her husband, Stewart, vacation in Savannah, Ga., every February. She and Deecie McNelly Denison see each other a couple times every summer, and are still best friends!

We, of course, are very excited. Our daughter Leigh and her husband, Jan (‘Yan’ in Norwegian), have been married a little over two years. This baby will be our greatest blessing in 2011. I have been retired from school nursing for two years and LOVE retirement. Eric is still doing dentistry three days a week, which is perfect for him. Other than this, our family is blessed with good health, good jobs and love for one another.

What more could we ask for?”

year. With two brand new hips and one new knee, cross-country (instead of alpine) skiing and the gym will be my activities of choice this season. A good attitude and plenty of rehab makes for successful surgeries. I was back in Cleveland quite a bit in 2010, as big sister Mig (Marguerite Perkins Sherwin ’61) succumbed to cancer on Nov. 20. Meg and Nanny helped to ground and support me at her memorial. Thank you, my lifelong friends. I prefer to return to Cleveland for weddings and reunions! Here’s wishing everyone good health and a positive attitude.”

Kathi “Koontzie” Lynch writes, “Our daughter, Kelley, was married to Edouard Moueix on May 29, 2010 in Paris. She moved to Paris in February 2006 to work for L’Oreal Paris (she had been with them in NYC since June 2002). As I predicted, she fell in love with a Frenchman! Fortunately, we like Edouard very much and they are both so devoted to each other and very happy. Edouard’s family owns vineyards in the Bordeaux region (Pomerol and St Emilion). Kelley and Edouard live in a chateau on one of the vineyards in Pomerol (about a half-hour drive from Bordeaux). The family also owns three vineyards in Napa, Calif. We have had many trips to France since Kelley moved there.

Paris is an amazingly BEAUTIFUL city. We love it! Am afraid my French classes with Miss Finley at HB have not served me well. I can’t speak any French − only know some vocabulary. Kelley has become fluent in French … L’Oreal paid for her French lessons. Edouard and most of his family speak English, though, which is good for me. My husband, Peter, and I are not retired yet … though I would love to be. Going on 24 years in the brokerage business for me. Started with AG Edwards (which is now Wells Fargo), then to SmithBarney, then to Morgan Stanley (now it is Morgan Stanley SmithBarney). Peter’s whole career has been with the railroad. He does consulting now for the railroad (Amtrak, Metro North and the Department of Transportation in Connecticut). I exchange Christmas cards with Sara Cheheyl every year and am in touch with and see Paige Bassett quite regularly. Hear bits and pieces about others in our class from my sister, Ginger Koontz Ratcliffe ’66, who lives in Diana Price reports, “I took a leave of Shaker.” absence from my Shakespeare desk about two years ago to start the Cleveland 9.12 Project. We work closely with Tea Party Patriots to restore fiscal sanity to our government and to hold our legislators accountable. My husband, Pat, and I joined 1.5 million other concerned citizens at the September 2009 rally in Washington. It was one of the most remarkable and memorable events of my life. Since then, I have been working as a volunteer with many new colleagues on various initiatives.

Meantime, Shakespeare moves to a front burner later this year; I’ll be interviewed for a forthcoming documentary on the Shakespeare Authorship Question. I was reluctant to do the interview, since it will explore one of the crackpot

theories that give the authorship controversy a bad name. In the end, I decided I had to do it, since the first segment of the documentary is based on my research and book. While I work at my desk, Pat is training to run his fourth Boston Marathon in the spring.

Cathy Eaton wrote that she and Adele Wick spent 10 days in Nova Scotia, Canada. “We jumped in the chilly waters of Deep Cove and attended a peace conference in Halifax. We then joined my brother John in Pugwash, where we interviewed 21 people who had worked behind the scenes of the Pugwash Peace Conferences, which were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995. I joined Missy Marshall, Anne Knight, Sarah Rountree Pease and Paula Frohring Kushlan to help Adele celebrate the lovely wedding of her son Doug to Dorsey in late August at Manchester by the Sea. Jen Coppins, Jennie Jordan Cline and I had lunch in Concord, then Michael and I visited Jennie and her husband Andy just before they moved to their island home in South West Harbor, Maine. Our son Colin just moved to Boston and will start a graduate certificate program at MassArt in industrial design. He hiked the Appalachian Trail (all 2,200 miles) and is now ready to design outdoor camping gear. Our son Devon had a rock climbing accident, and three surgeries on his wrist have kept him out of commission for the last year. I enjoy running into classmates on Facebook. Maybe Jennie Jordan Cline can make us an HB Class of 1968 Facebook page.”

Paula Frohring Kushlan also wrote about Doug Miller’s wedding: “I had the glorious reconnection with Sarah, Missy, Anne and Cathy at Adele’s son’s wedding. We both celebrated glorious weddings of our ‘firstborn.’ I can only hope her son or my daughter had as much fun as we did that night … which brings me to the proposal for a FANTASTIC band for us … having passed the 60th at the next Reunion. We are the ones who would dance all night. How many of us would recruit husbands, friends, sons, relatives, and sons-in-law? (I, for one, could assure attendance of the SIL and friends to ensure one heck of a great evening!) I have also had a great year of contact with Jane Wierdsma Forbes, who designed two-thirds of my property. You need to publish this so that everyone knows her ability to match/enhance Oehme, van Sweden, who did

off to teach composition at Yale in the Institute of Sacred Music. It was an excellent experience for him and them, and he has been invited back for June 2011, so we’ll vacation after that. A new CD on the Loft label, ‘The Organ Music of Dan Locklair,’ Marilyn Keiser organist, was released in the winter to great reviews. This year we’ve also had the joy of a new puppy, another Sheltie named Darby. I’m enjoying being a Stephen Minister at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and my work at Old Salem Museums & Gardens continues to be busy and fulfilling. As VP for Education, I’m always in the ‘plan and execute’ mode! I hope to get to Reunion in 2012!”

Melissa Litton writes, “My only news is that I am now with The Economist Intelligence Group (www.eiu.com) and really enjoy it. It’s the same old, same old to still be in the economics world, but I cover Canada and New England − its so much fun to use my French again!

Had a big compliment from a client – ‘You have almost no accent!’ I have not thought of Sally Thompson for years, but she was an amazing French teacher (also Madame Mounier). Because of Ms. Thompson, I have complete confidence about tenses. It’s also fun to learn current everyday phrases such as ‘hit the pound sign’ (‘appuyez le carré’) and ‘if you want to send an email’ (‘si vous voulez envoyer un email’). Finally, Cathy Thompson Kuhn sent an update: “My life hasn’t changed much. I will be five years cancer-free in May, and I guess that’s pretty important, although it certainly doesn’t define my life. Our middle son, Tom, married Mary Coe in a beautiful wedding last June in Providence, R.I. The reception was in her grandparents’ back yard, overlooking the Rhode Island capital building.

Quite spectacular, really. They live in Stamford, Conn., where Mary works as a currency trader, and Tom commutes to Manhattan where he works in PR on the Starbucks account. Chris and Kristin are still in Chagrin Falls. He has just joined a new law firm, and she is having a ball working as the preschool and Primary admissions director at HB. She comments on the openness of the students and how their individuality is encouraged. It seems more than a little different from our time. I took my granddaughter Mackenzie to IDEO. Her first one, and my first time back. As a ‘student’ in the HB day care, she seems destined to be a lifer.

Carly is still my wonderful manager at The Perfect Bride, and girls are still getting married. Our business is doing well, and I still love it. Watching the process is really fascinating. She teaches voice when she is not dressing brides. Pete continues to love his job as president of a family office. His term as chairman of the Cleveland Play House ended last summer, and the Play House is preparing to move downtown to a fabulous new facility at Playhouse Square. Turning 60 was a little hard.

Why is that? Once the day passed, it was fine, but

thinking about it was, well … has anyone else experienced it like this? Wishing you all a fabulous seventh decade!”

I, Page Talbott, had the pleasure of seeing a number of HB classmates this year, including Missy Marshall, Helen Kuss Ewen and Kay Simon, who came for a short visit to Philadelphia in order to visit the Barnes Foundation before its move downtown. The last time I saw Kay was at Adele’s 50th birthday weekend, but I found it easy to reconnect after all this time. It’s great that our HB connections continue to be so strong. Best wishes from Robin and me for 2011.

Ellen Rogers’ book Kasey to the Rescue comes out in stores November 2. The memoir tells the story of the accident Ellen’s son Ned (now 27) had five years ago that left him a quadriplegic with a brain injury, and how a capuchin helper monkey named Kasey came to live with them and offered meaning, hope and healing to all of their lives. An excerpt from the book was in the November Issue of Oprah Magazine.

Tamara Unger, after earning a bachelor’s degree in art from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, returned to Cleveland and opened her ceramics studio, Potsibilities. She became an active member of the arts community, exhibiting her work and teaching ceramics to students of all ages. She also spent a year in Taipei, Taiwan, studying the cultural arts and language and teaching ceramics to Taiwanese teachers and international women. Tamara moved to San Francisco in 1981, and now lives in Sonoma with her husband, Adrian Hyman, a professional photographer, and Baci, their Labrador. She is pursuing her art full time and balancing it with teaching her clay programs to children and adults in Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties.

The Howson Gallery at Judson Park presented her work “Expressions in Clay” from January 7 through February 11. Congratulations, Tamara!

some of my work, and who is doing a Chagrin Falls project. My poor children; I did not mean to forget their efforts! They are flourishing. My daughter, Kristin, graduated from law school, passed the bar, got married and continued to compete in the amateur hunter/jumper horse world during the same year. Bless her Type A personality. My son, Philip, is in pursuit of a Ph.D. in biology, which now boils down to genetics in any case, and brings him back to his grandfather’s specialty in biochemistry. I love the connection!

My personal efforts have been in making partnerships that make my Frohring Foundation flourish. For mental and physical therapy I exercise and train horses for competition in the hunter/ jumper world. In the midst of these efforts is always building and construction, and these issues keep me in touch with the county, state and federal worlds. Conservation of land is always in my head and heart, and I try to give equal time to Ohio and Maryland, but as we all know, Ohio is so far ahead of Maryland, and in the latter case I am dealing with such embedded politics, it is hard to get anything accomplished!”

Jane Wierdsma Forbes spent 18 months working in the landscape industry in the Washington, D.C. area, “which was how I got to spend lots of fun time with Paula helping her with her garden, eating pancakes and reminiscing – laughed ’til we cried − about the good old days at HB. If you’re looking for entertainment for the next Reunion, Paula should be the headliner. She could be on Comedy Central! I had a great time in D.C., served on a board at the U.S. Botanic Garden, kayaked the Potomac, climbed to the top of National Cathdral, sang the Hallelujah Chorus at Kennedy Center, spent time with Paula Welshimer Locklair and Pat Brownley … the bucket list goes on.

Ultimately returned to hearth, home and husband because of all the constraints brought on by the recession. I continue to design landscapes in Ohio.

Kids are employed and have health insurance, so life is good. James is thriving in culinary school.

Duncan is in Colorado Springs working for Planned Parenthood as a program manager and educator, loving the Colorado lifestyle. Husband Bill runs family wine distribution company in Columbus. How do I feel about turning 60?

Every aspect of it was wonderful and we highly recommend Silversea! We liked it so much that we’re taking another Silversea cruise of the Mediterranean next summer. Once again, we start with the sad news of the loss of a classmate’s parent: Tish Fabens’ father passed away in early December. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tish and her family. Josie Lowden Chapman attended the memorial service and says Tish did a great job of giving a touching eulogy of her sweet father. “St. Paul’s Church was packed as you would imagine, as so many people know and love the Fabens family,” she reports. “I got a chance to meet Tish’s lovely children and see her whole family.” Ellen Rosendale came from

Chicago for the service (Josie says, “Ellen looks just as I remember her from the Senior Room at HB! She seems great and remains a close friend with Tish!”). Lila Meacham was there too, as were Nancy Weil’s parents. Lila lost her mom last summer, too, and she has continued to stay in touch with all her mom’s friends at Judson Park where she (and the Fabenses) had lived for several years. Josie is still living and selling real estate in Shaker Heights. Her youngest son will graduate from US in June and her other son is graduating from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in May. Her 25-year-old daughter is a paralegal for a firm in downtown Cleveland.

It seems appropriate that the winter issue arrived in my mailbox on 1/11/11, a noteworthy date in and of itself, but also the release date for Dori Jones Yang’s novel Daughter of Xanadu. Dori says she did two bookstore events the first weekend the book was out at two local independently owned bookstores in the Seattle area, and more than 50 friends and supporters came to each. She gave a talk and showed pictures of Mongolia, then took questions and signed books. “Lots of people said they enjoyed the events (!) and bought books,” she says. “I also arranged 12 ‘appearances’ on online book-review blogs during January 10-22, either writing guest posts or answering questions.

Marjo Talbott writes, “I am now in my 17th year at Maret and we are celebrating our Centennial, which is great fun. Four of our teachers went in November to HB, which hosted a national conference, The Education Innovation Summit − they were impressed. I am traveling quite a bit to see alums around the country and get to also stop in and see my daughter, Becca, who is directing an after-school program in San Francisco. Our younger daughter is a junior at Skidmore and is the captain of her volleyball team. It was fun to get holiday cards from a number of HB classmates.”

Susie Owen Bookshar reports that son Robbie, a senior at US, and two of his classmates released their first LP (CD) last December at the Grog Shop in Coventry. You can check out the band, Above the Atlantic, on Facebook and iTunes. They are trying to decide how they can continue to play and attend college near one another.

In December, Luda Anikienko Grossman and 14-year-old daughter Stacy took a Girl Scout trip to New York City, thanks to Stacy selling enough Girl Scout cookies! Luda is in her 31st year of teaching in Cleveland (she plans to retire after her 35th year) and plays her cello in the Suburban Symphony Orchestra.

As I write this (in mid-January), John and I, Nanci Fox Taylor, are looking forward to a trip to France in early March. Daughter Joanie is in her final year of business school at Tuck (Dartmouth) and she’s studying in Paris for 11 weeks this winter, which definitely calls for a parental visit. (Once again, we’re reminded that we’d like to come back as one of our children in our next life!) We’ll also spend a few days with a cousin who lives in Annecy, a little town in the French Alps not far from Geneva.

I hope to hear from more of you and have more to report for the next issue. This time next year we’ll be looking forward to our 40th reunion! Hope to see many of you in Cleveland next May.

Bob and I now have an empty nest, which is harder than I thought it would be − the house is so quiet, especially since when Beth moved out she took her two big dogs with her, so now I have no kids and no dogs! I am still working for a web hosting company but am looking for more part-time work to fill my days. I also still have a Girl Scout troop that has almost 45 girls in it − it is an older girl group that runs events for girls in first to fifth grades five times a year, and I run the cookie sale for 16 troops in my area. We would love to see anyone coming over to the Philadelphia area or could meet them in New York City, as both are close to us. I am also enjoying my three grandchildren, who are 2, 5 and almost 13.

Mom said she saw Candy in Tucson. We will be out there at the end of February − it is such a great place to visit!”

Heather Spitler Hauser’s update is: “I am excited to reconnect with many via Facebook. Now it’s time to see each other in person. Starting veterinary technician school in February. It’s an accelerated program and graduates, I hope, in August 2012! My Bracco Italiano puppy is the first in the U.S. to have achieved his Junior Hunter title. The Bracco is considered a rare breed and has been acknowledged only through a foundation stock number to allow entrance in AKC events. The Bracco, like my other dogs, is a pointing breed. I have ‘put down’ three dogs in one year. Not a good year at all. I am still trying to sell my property in Colorado. I am still in Columbus, but not sure where I’ll eventually ‘roost.’”

Another Facebook fan, Laura James Fallon, says, “I want to thank all the class for your prayers for my USMC son, Jordan. He returned to the U.S. safely in November. We are glad he’s back at Camp Pendleton. He looks forward to his upcoming wedding in Granville, Ohio this coming October, as do we. My younger son, Eliot, is working on a graphic novel as well as many creative pursuits such as screenwriting. He worked for Marvel Comics in New York last year for a short time, but is now back in Chicago. I am doing a lot of genealogy research lately. I’ve even discovered distant cousins. This hobby has had me delving heavily into history. So far I haven’t discovered any awful skeletons in the closet! I turned again to politics last fall and volunteered for the winner of Deb Meister Fitzgerald the sheriff ’s race here. is getting around! I’ve been blessed with the opportunity for much travel around the world, now that kids are off and away, for the most part. Gary has been traveling pretty extensively to South America, South Africa and the Far East, so I have been the very lucky traveling companion, handy with a camera for documenting Association meetings for the magazines. Great to meet people from all over − and invaluable in broadening the typical ‘American’ perspective … I’ve been enjoying photography, even entering a few photo contests here and there … and I live for springtime when I can get back into my garden! What more can a girl want?!

Laurie Frankel is enjoying family time.

Laurie writes, “We reunited with our University of Oregon sophomore, Jonas, in La Jolla, Calif. this winter break. He was very excited his team made it to the football national championship. At 55, I decided I could not afford to have other people in charge of my financial and creative security. It’s called Reading Counseling Assoc. My friend Cheryl and I, both LICSWs, see kids, teens, families, couples and adults and work with schools and educational advocacy. I hope to start teaching parent education classes for helping their children with behavior, school, mental health and divorce grief adjustment issues. Started planning 11/09, got space 10/10, opening doors 2/11. I hope to have a more personal time in 16 to 18 months; we’ll see.”

Libby Siegel Hill is still living in Painesville and is very active in her family businesses in Mentor. Libby writes, “I have the karate studio, Family Karate. I teach ages 3 to 83.

I just passed my fifth-degree black belt examination, which raises me to a master level. I’m just glad this is my last formal test. This test was 6½ hours long and I was the only participant over 50. Half the group were teenagers who were surprised when they took a hit or two from this old lady with MS in the last hour. I’m also the office manager for my husband’s business, Thomas Hill Investment Services. We just expanded his office to add a couple more brokers. We’re glad we’re growing in this economy. My big news is that I will be a grandmother in August! Tom and I are so excited! I watched the IDEO procession online while I worked at my desk. Liz Fritzsche writes, “Life is good. I am in my 26th year teaching art in Albuquerque. I love the kids, love my colleagues. I have a beautiful old adobe house I renovated 20 years ago. I make porcelain vessels and cast iron sculptures in a studio I built out back. Hope all are well and

Nannie Kirk Carroll has SIX grandchildren and is still working for Coldwell Banker selling real estate in the Dartmouth area.

Her youngest daughter, Winslow, is engaged and living in Berkeley and has become certified NOLS instructor. Nannie’s husband is enjoying retirement but is kept busy traveling to Ethiopia and teaching children carpentry skills and gardening. Nannie hopes to join him in Ethiopia next year.

Chris Sheetz Wasson is still in the Boston area and is a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts. She also assists the conservation staff in the area of Egyptian art and other conservation areas.

Jennifer works for Google, Courtney is studying to be a nurse and Charlie is at UC Boulder.

Holly Boyer Scott is working in the admissions office at Hawken. Sara ’04 spent six months in Bolivia volunteering and is now back in Washington. Son Michael is attending UC Boulder. Husband Peter is still the revered head of the English department Mary Schloss Treco is in at Hawken.

Cindy Calfee Murphy has joined husband Brian and purchased a company in Twinsburg called Visimax. The company applies coatings to specialized lenses. Chris is working in Cleveland at Swagelok, Margot ’04 is with the Teach America Program and is teaching in the Bronx, Kathleen ’07 is working on her graduate degree at Oxford and Andrew is a senior at US. As for me, Candy Spring Clancy, it has been a busy year.

Sadly, my mother passed away in October, but on the bright side my son Peter is getting married in October, and Bob’s daughter got married in February. I am still a substitute teacher for the Cleveland Heights Public Schools. Bob is working part time on development at the Magnolia Clubhouse, which provides services to the mentally ill. We traveled to Turkey in May and absolutely loved the country and the people. My son Charlie is in New York working for Merrill Lynch, Peter is in San Francisco working for Pearson Publishing and Katie ’08 is in Columbus working for a wholesale supplier of spa products called CosmoProf. As for Bob’s children, Lauren works for UBS, Rob lives in Akron and sadly grapples with being bipolar and Regan is married and lives in London and works for Workman It was great to hear from Sue Publishing.

Arnoff Spohr! She says, “I have been employed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for the past 21 years in a variety of rewarding capacities. I am married with two children; Alex is 15 and Rachel is 13. We live in Cincinnati but spend as much time as possible on the sunny beaches of Sanibel, Fla. I would love to reconnect with you. Checking in from California, Pam Polite Fisco emails: “I continue to run my geology program of classes and field trips for Marin County schools but have diversified my activities somewhat in the last few years. I recently stepped down from the position of president of the Mill Valley Tennis Club, having served on the board of directors for the past two years. I only wish my tennis skills had improved as much as my management skills over the past two years! My other focus has been on the natural world. Four years ago I was trained and certified by the University of California as a master gardener and have been spending some of my time helping Marin County residents learn how to garden more sustainably in our dry Mediterranean climate. On the home front, our adult children (Gavin, 27; Dana, 25; and Peter, 23) are all graduated and gainfully employed, with visions of graduate school dancing around in some of their heads!

There are no wedding bells or grandkids on the horizon, so Dennis and I continue to travel the world (frequently on our bicycles) in search of fun.”

For Wren Withers, life is super busy. From the Bay area, Wren writes, “I’m still working as a technical writer documenting Application Performance Management for CA Technologies.

It continues to be an interesting and challenging field. I’ve begun my second year on the board of directors of Saranaloka Foundation, which has a goal of providing a California home and, eventually, a training monastery for Western Theravada Buddhist nuns. It’s work of the heart and very inspiring! Last year I visited Hudson several times to see my parents at Laurel Lake and help them with their increasing health issues. I was able to see Dawn Hassett ’72 on one of my trips, and we really enjoyed catching up.”

Also sending news from the West Coast, Ruth Loomis writes: “I’ve been living in Los Angeles for nearly 17 years − a few months longer than I lived in New York City, where I moved right after graduating from college. Wow – in some ways it feels like I just moved here! Josh, our 13-year-old daughter Bella and I traveled to Italy in August for a big family reunion to celebrate my parents’ 60th anniversary. Twenty-one of us (including my sister Lucy Loomis ’70) stayed for a week in a 10-bedroom hunting lodge in Vicchio, a small town northwest of Florence, and enjoyed side trips to Sienna, Pisa and Florence. Josh, Bella and I then took the train to Lucca for three days, and ended up in Rome for five days. The whole experience was one of the highlights of my life – add me to the list of people who are crazy about Italy. I’m still recruiting (20 years now), but have recently switched to for-profit clients (mostly management consulting), so it’s an interesting adjustment. I’ve started taking ballet classes again, after a 13-year hiatus, and really enjoy it so much more than going to the gym. I’m probably the oldest in the class by 20 years! Bella is applying to Fiona Brown Reilly sent the high schools.”

following update: “I’m still living in Cleveland Heights, working with US doing public relations and thoroughly enjoying it. Husband Mike is busy with Reilly Painting and Contracting and our rental property business. Daughter Lindsey is here in Cleveland and has her own business producing ‘Ken Burns-like’ family documentaries. Son Brook is off to Boston to pursue his dream of living in a big city and exploring photography and filmmaking. My youngest, Travis, graduates from Hawken this year and hopes to study art in college.”

Annie Morris Tait reports: “I have absolutely NO NEWS. 2010 was a stinky poo-poo year. Frank and I have high hopes for 2011! Bring it on!”

I, Karen Ekelman Tucker, agree with Annie and Heather and am glad 2010 is over. Bob and I experienced every parent’s nightmare when our son Michael fell in a rock climbing accident and died in April 2010 at the age of 27. Our family is devastated. Words just cannot describe. We spend as much family time together as possible these days. And hug each other close. Bob and I find comfort at our cottage on Lake Erie and are building a new vacation home there. It has been a good project for us. Other than that, I remain retired, walking five miles a day; doing a little volunteering at Hospice; and traveling with Bob, who continues his law practice at Tucker, Ellis & West. Our kids are back at work: Emily (28) is a manager at Nordstrom in Chicago, Kelly (28) is a paralegal in Cleveland and Annie (26) coaches lacrosse at Northwestern. Cindy Albrecht Durham is “still working for Legal Aid Society – five years in March. Still chair of Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth and now membership chair for the Coalition for Juvenile Justice. Joined Events and Adventures, a nationwide singles group, in June and wish I had done it two years ago. I recommend it for anyone who is single and wants to meet other singles to have fun with.

Ryan (24) is still in Denver working in marketing for Dish Network. Amanda (22) graduated from South Carolina in May and is working as a bank teller here in Nashville. Headed to the

Dominican Republic with the Albrecht clan (21 of us ranging from 9 months to 81) for the week after Christmas.”

Laura Baldwin Wortman brought us up to date with her kids. Sara is a senior in high school, fretting over her grades and which college will be lucky enough to have her matriculate there. Alex, who is at the Elliot School of International Relations (part of GWU), is preparing to spend his spring semester in Tokyo.

Paul is now in Storrs, Conn. (UConn) doing a master’s/Ph.D. program in computer engineering.

She is still trying to figure out what she wants to do in this second half century of her life. Amid the possibilities (and confusion) was a wonderful 25th anniversary present from Charlie: flying lessons.

Four or five times a month she heads to New Haven to spend a couple hours learning how to be a pilot – or more correctly, learning how to land the (*@#) plane. “Surely it is a good experience even at this late stage of life to relive the humbling experiences of learning something new.”

Susan Holmes-Bercheck has simplified her life by giving up her garden center, Sunnybrook Farms Nursery in Chesterland, last February and she is happily back to following her true passion − garden consultation/design/renovation/writing, plus giving lots of garden lectures to local garden clubs and community education groups. Their son Alex (26) landed a great engineering management job with Avery Dennison in Painesville, so he’s local, unlike his sister, Samantha (24), who started a five-year veterinary program at the University of Glasgow in Scotland this fall. ROAD TRIP! As I, Maggie Calkins, sit and edit this version of class news, it is a cold, snowy day in northeast Ohio − perfect weather for the dogs to go out and make snow angels. I traveled quite a bit last fall.

We drank ourselves up the Rhone with my folks for 10 days, which was delicious. Then had a week in Ireland, then Scotland for business. I can tell the economy is finally picking up because the consulting for the design and construction of new nursing homes and assisted living communities is booming. Our kids (Sarah and Kirk) both live in Florida. Granddaughter Ella is now 4, and Leigh Anne is 20 and living in Georgia. Hope everyone else who didn’t communicate is doing well and has great plans − like Laura – for how to tackle the second half-century of our lives with gusto!

Thank you to everyone who responded to my requests for news, both through Facebook and the traditional email route. Some people are shy about sharing their news or claim they just don’t have any. Let’s be realistic, guys − some of us haven’t seen each other in more than 25 years; so any news is worth sharing.

Nancy Fisco Miller writes from Solon, “Did I send anything? Job same, kids, hubby and dog are all good. Not too much newsy on my end. Does this count?” Yes, Nan, it counts!

Michel Hodges, on the other hand, has big news: “I’m back in school to become a nurse. I left my job at Blonder last June and spent the summer getting ready for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk , which I did at the end of July.

Loved it so much I already registered for this year’s walk! If you have someone you would like me to honor in this year’s walk, please go to my page on the 3-Day website and leave a message.

If you would have told me a year ago I would quit my job, walk 60 miles in three days and go back to school, at the very least my eyebrows would have lifted in surprise. On the home front, I’m single and attached to a great guy named Bill. I live in the North Collinwood area of Cleveland

and feel so blessed to be able to walk to the end of my street and go down to Lake Erie. Hope the rest of my classmates are happy and healthy!

Wendy Crabbe Lingafelter, one of our most loyal respondents, has news on her family and several other classmates: “I am still living happily in Chagrin Falls with my husband, David, and four children. Paige (19) is a sophomore at Penn State University. She is loving college life and is a Phi Beta Phi. Lindsay (17) is a senior at Chagrin Falls High School. She cheered for the football team all the way to the final state tournament game. It was very a very exciting season. She also plays lacrosse and competes with her friends and cousin Chase Healey ’11 on the HB team every season. It’s a great local competition! Grant (15) is a sophomore at Chagrin. He played football and is ready for the upcoming lacrosse season, as well. Billy (13) is in seventh grade at Chagrin Falls Middle School. He participates in football, basketball and lacrosse. David and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary this past summer.

Hard to believe! David continues to work for Moen, Inc. in North Olmsted. As for me, I am no longer coaching lacrosse after a ten-year stretch.

I must admit, I do miss it but in exchange, I am able to watch all my children play in their spring sports. I am hoping to breed my English Cream Golden Retriever this spring/summer. I have always wanted to do this, and, who knows, it may become my next career move. My door is always welcome to any and all of you who make your way back to Cleveland. As I reflect on my time at HB, I have many amazing memories of my time spent with all of you. Nancy Fisco Miller and I get together almost weekly. She is living in Solon, which makes it very easy. I love that! I have recently spent time with Kristin Cocking Zacher in Phoenix. Billy and I visited her and her four beautiful children in August. She is doing great! I get to see Lori Shoos Mullen a lot. She and her family live nearby and are all great. I also am in touch with Leslie Gorman Karlovec ’81 and Alison Brooks Kohn ’81. They live in Chagrin and we get together often. They play on their toy computers only to complain they don’t have email. We visited Wayne’s parents in Colorado for Thanksgiving and climbed Pike’s Peak via tram. Not much snow yet in D.C. Faced with making mulch instead of snow angels. My work at Georgetown University School of Medicine is going well. Taught an interviewing course this fall with first-year med students in the hospital. Very fun.”

Gail Peoples Johnson says she has no new news, yet she has a daughter in her first year of college. Gail writes, “I have been working for General Electric for the last 16 years;

this past fall I sent my one and only daughter, Shannen, to Syracuse University; and my husband, Eric, and I just celebrated our 22nd anniversary and are thoroughly/mostly enjoying our ‘empty’ nest! We are still here, in the wondrous snow belt that is Solon, Ohio!

Tedie Jones Bastian writes from the greater Boston area: “We’re still in Dover, Mass. Alastair’s at Milton Academy in ninth grade. Isabelle’s at Charles River School in Dover in sixth grade. James is still at Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center as a pediatrician.

I’m working at home and at school and trying to help keep everyone fed and healthy. Off to my 25th reunion at college in June. Before we know it, we’ll be invited back to HB for our 30th! My niece is at HB now, and I’m glad someone in my extended family can go to our alma mater. I enjoy keeping in touch as much as I can with what’s happening there. I even watched part of IDEO on the live streamed video link sent out via email.”

Finally, James and I, Heath Richter Barker, are still loving suburban Atlanta. This year has brought big changes for us. I went back to work in July as a production underwriter for a company called Gemini Transportation Underwriters. I basically went back to my old job (that I left seven years ago), only for a better company. My old boss started this new company in ’09, and I was lucky to be able to join right when I needed to go back to work. My company is headquartered in Boston, so I get to Boston several times a year and hope to reconnect with Tedie on one of these trips. I do get to see my sister in Arlington much more frequently. James stayed home with the kids over the summer (I highly recommend this role swap to any couple − we both appreciate the other much more now) and is now in the process of starting his own business as a professional photographer.

Having been a cinema major in college, he will finally get to pursue his passion. Our kids are all doing great. Hope (17) is starting to look at colleges and wants to go North, where it is cold and there is a lot of snow. We hosted a French exchange student this summer named MarieCaroline, and Hope will go to Mac’s family in Versailles for three weeks this summer. Sam (12) is at a new school called Holy Innocents Episcopal School and is loving it. He had his first theatrical role this summer at our church and is singing in the honor chorus at school. He will get to sing the national anthem for a big Southeastern Slam wrestling tournament this coming weekend. Our youngest, Win, is in the second grade and loved the six days he had off of school to sled and play in the snow thanks to the snowstorm that dumped six inches of snow and about an inch of ice on greater Atlanta. While playing in the snow last week, I still talk to Meg he said, “I’m in heaven!”

Barker Klingelhofer pretty regularly, and we had the pleasure of a visit from her eldest, Kate, this summer. Their family got back from India in May, just in time for Kate to celebrate her 18th birthday in New York City. She had a little time off and

for 25 years. How time flies. Last year, Pat and I celebrated our 20th anniversary and we are very fortunate to also have two great sons. Ryan is a junior at St. Ignatius, studying hard, playing lacrosse and recently beginning the college search process. Connor is 14 and is anxious to start his high school experience at Ignatius this fall. So I am doing my best to keep up with two very active teenage boys while also trying to keep up to date on the international financial markets as a foreign exchange trader at Fifth Third. It’s been a challenging but very rewarding career, and I still enjoy coming to work each and every day. Looking forward to catching up with many of you later this spring at the Reunion.

After a year of reconstruction, Maria Greiner Allen, her husband and four kids are happily back in their house in Lake Forest, Ill. Water destroyed all three stories of more than half the house and contents. She writes, “The kids are growing and keeping us busy. My eldest, Charlie, is a junior in high school and will be soon leaving the new nest. Sarah is a freshman at a wonderful girls’ school but I wish we had HB in Chicago. Peter is in sixth grade and travels a lot playing hockey. My youngest, Gracie, is in fourth grade. I hope to see as many classmates as possible at the Reunion in May.”

then began applying to colleges. She was accepted at UMass. Jake, their 16-year-old, is working very hard his junior year so that he will have excellent options for college. Jake is very musical and plays the piano beautifully. Meg continues her work for New Hope for Women, and William is renovating homes in the greater Camden area of Maine. We hope to get to Maine this summer for a visit.

Caryn Daus Flanagan writes, “After a brief stint as director of education, I am now the interim artistic director of Off Square Theatre Company in Jackson, Wyo. In 2011 I’ll be spending less time acting and writing, and more time directing and teaching. After a big shake-up last summer, we’ve basically rebuilt the company and I am really thrilled with the results so far. Debbie Rice Ford was here on business in April, and it was so nice to catch up with her. Dani Weiss came for a visit in July with her Irish wolfhound, Oliver. That dog is like a people magnet − as big as a pony and so sweet! On October 7, Tim and I celebrated our 20th anniversary … a milestone we are both proud of. Our girls are doing great; both are in high school and thriving in ways I know my parents hoped for with me but I was too stubborn (rebellious?) to deliver. Having ninth and eleventh graders brings back so many memories of HB! It makes me a bit nostalgic not to be in Cleveland to offer them that same opportunity, but at the same time they are exposed to things here that make theirs a unique experience. (For example: Did you know Jackson Hole High School has a rodeo team? THAT’s what I’m talking about) … Hello to the Class of ’85!”

Karen Neuger Nathan writes, “We’ve just spent the long MLK weekend in Orlando, where Rob had a veterinary conference.

We took the kids to Universal for the new Harry Potter attraction. Jacob (7½) is mad for Harry. We’ve been reading the books together since summer (it’ll

take a year to get through all seven), and Jacob has gone back and read the first three on his own. We did have fun. The Journey ride is well done, as is Hogsmeade. Nora (3) was able to ride the Flight of the Hippogriff coaster, which we all enjoyed. Jacob got a wand; we shared a butterbeer; and Jacob got a hippogriff and Nora Fawkes the Phoenix. We also rode all the rides in Dr. Seuss land, so Nora didn’t get gypped. We visited Kennedy Space Center too, and the weather warmed up enough for a day of swimming. Jacob is doing well in second grade; Nora is in two parent/tot programs. She’s started swim lessons. I started a blog about a year ago − http://fargoefer.blogspot.com − mainly for my own entertainment and to be writing something. I’m still doing communications work for Rob’s practice, and some pro bono work for friends. Rob and I have had dinner with Leslie Royster and her fiancé, Darrin Gates, a couple of times in the past year. We’re due for another outing with them soon. Oh, one more thing … I ran into Fran Russo Goodman in August. We were both dropping our sons off at Red Oak Camp. I hauled Jacob up there for a week. He had a blast; and Nora and I explored the splendors of Lake County.”

Morgan is busy being a 5-year-old with lots of play dates and a budding social life! Sarah is my artistic child and she is busy taking piano lessons; and without sounding biased, she is a phenomenal drawer! She has just started taking squash lessons and skiing with her sister Maren, who cannot get enough of sports. She is interested and is playing soccer, basketball, squash, field hockey, swimming, ski club and whatever new sport she can learn. She was captain of the Gold team for sixth grade, which was fun. Next year she will settle into seventh-grade sports, which is when she will

No changes to the basic outlines of our lives: living in Cleveland, three school-aged kids, working as a consultant to grant-making foundations. We are lucky; things are good. The interesting parts are the details … the Tooth Fairy has been busy at our house − all three kids have crazy toothless smiles; the training wheels are off one bike for good, and the other two are working on it; and we’re heavily into ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid,’ ‘Ramona and Beezus’ and ‘Magic Treehouse’ books. I’m assuming many of my classmates have similar details in their households, and wishing everyone the best for the New Year.”

Betsy Helf Mateu writes, “The little people are taking over the Helf/Mateu house. The older set of twins, Daniel and Sebastian (age 8) have commandeered the family room and are slowly gaining ground in the kitchen. Their raids of the refrigerator are becoming more frequent and their covert operations on the snack cabinets are quite impressive. The living room has almost fallen to the daily games of soccer, tackle (just tackle, no football required) and more soccer. The little set of twins, Alex and Sarah (boy/girl, age 1), are steadily taking over the office bookshelves with blocks, cars and baby dolls. Their stash of wagons and ride-on toys has relegated the cars out of the driveway. My husband and I are trying to secure our bedroom, but, truthfully, we are losing ground. Raul and I did ‘sneak out’ to France and Italy in October only to find that the kids were even more in charge when we returned. And I still escape to the University of Miami twice a week to teach in the School of Communications, where the people actually listen and respect me.

Life is good.”

Cynthia Rutter Grover reports that, after 14 years in Colorado, “Todd and I can’t bring ourselves to leave. I think we are here to stay. We love it! Our boys, Ryan (age 10) and Camden (age 8) are enjoying the Colorado lifestyle as well. We have become a family of skiers, hikers and just about anything that involves being outside. I have taken on the

role of sweeper when we ski together, as I can’t keep up with anyone. I have continued my home business of custom framing and am delighted by the flexibility it offers. I’m able to be home for the kids and involved in their school activities. I have expanded my business to include some photography.

I shot a wedding this summer and have done some portraits. I’m most enthusiastic about the portraits and shooting outdoors. It’s difficult to take a bad photo with such breathtaking scenery. As a family, we have done some traveling throughout the year.

We, the whole family, spent spring break in France visiting Todd’s brother and sister-in-law. While we were there, we toured Paris, Lyon, did some skiing in the French Alps and went to Barcelona for a few days. It’s impossible to think of one favorite activity we did while in Europe, but one of my favorite and unusual experiences was attending a professional soccer game in Lyon. It was so unique, and what a fascinating group of fans! This past summer, we spent some time in New Jersey with my sister, Grier Rutter Hynes ’89, and her family; explored New York and knocked a couple more ballparks off our list; and went to the Outer Banks to catch up with my parents.”

Lisa Mortimer reports that eldest daughter, Libby Cha ’15, is an eighth grader at HB and is enjoying having Coach Longley for field hockey this year (and getting ready to head in to the Upper School next year)! I hope to catch up with her on spring break in Sanibel and find out how Maggie Cha ’17 and William are doing, as well!

Marci Kehres Schwab reports that she is busy working at her framing/glass shop in Chagrin Falls and playing paddle tennis. She also reports that her children are all doing great − Jamie is at US and Libby ’16 is at HB and has Renee King Van De Motter as a math teacher!

Amy Wardrum Grenier writes: “I’ve been living in Southern California for more than 15 years now − yikes! I’m married (husband, Michael) with two kids, Alexander (5) and Gretchen (3), and live in an area called Pacific Palisades, right on the ocean. The weather is absolutely fantastic and certainly the best reason to live here, as we are currently enjoying sunny, 70-degree days in January.

I quit working in finance almost two years ago so I could spend more time with our kids. That’s been great and I love retirement. Anyone out visiting L.A., please feel free to give me a call or send an email.”

Halle Brunswick Moore, via Facebook, sends this message: “Rich and I had a baby boy named Mason Harper Aug. 8. The past five months have been wonderful. On another front, we’re looking forward to a trip to Belize and Guatemala in February (baby’s staying with grandma) to celebrate my 40th.”

Other than an “unseasonably cold” winter in Charleston, Laquita Blockson reports: “Not much has changed since my last update. Stephanie Sims Brown and I celebrated our 40th birthdays in July (pictured in this issue, we’re wearing our ‘39 Forever!’ tiaras). Stephanie is doing well in her medical practice in Maryland. Traci Barmen married her beau of nine years, Carleton Brooks, on December 11 in Malibu. He rides, trains and judges horse shows.

She is still happily teaching riding lessons to the children of movie stars. She and I had a fun visit in October at their place in L.A. Helen Rankin Butler reports: “Clara ’16 loves seventh grade at HB. She’s joining a week-long school trip to France in March with Lila McKenna ’16 (daughter of Laura Sullivan McKenna ’84), immersing themselves in French culture. Can’t wait! Griffin is in fifth grade and busy with sports. HB Board work keeps me challenged.”

Dawn Woodard Hill is “ juggling working full time and spending time with the girls. My eldest daughter, Alisa, is in the seventh grade and is now a teenager − yes, the Big 13. She loves reading and is a ‘Twilight Saga’ fanatic – she has taken me to all three movie midnight premieres and to the corresponding DVD midnight release parties. Not to be outdone, Lauren got me to drive her to Chicago to spend the day at the American Girl store. Lauren is a fourth grader and is 9 years old. Oh, the things we will do for our kids! I think I am really going to need my ‘adult-only’ cruise with Monica to Mexico this I, Sara Whitner, am summer. Bon Voyage!” hoping 2011 is the year I finally get to settle down a bit. I moved back across the Columbia River (again! − but kept the Washington place as a rental) and left a small hospital to get back to a big city ICU. I work days, which has been nothing short of life-changing (was 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. last year) in the Neurosciences ICU at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, 70 miles west of my home in Hood River, Ore. There is so much to learn and I am still overwhelmed most days, but never bored.

Being in Portland three days a week, I see Toby Bates (US ’85) a fair amount. He’s still great − but he and Dave don’t look identical anymore! I visited Kathleen Foley Langowski and Tony in Colorado in August and Traci Barmen and Carleton in L.A. in October. I’m skiing lots as it’s a La Nina year – we’re getting good snow on Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams! Happy 2011, gals.

I have been published in Cincinnati Magazine numerous times over the past year and am hoping to expand my horizons to the national publishing arena, as well, in the coming year. My boys are all great and keeping me busy. Hard to believe all three are in school and that the eldest is now officially a teenager (and MUCH taller than me!)

Robb and I own a company called Tortilla Lady. We produce 400 dozen flour and whole wheat tortillas, by hand, every day, which are then distributed to all our local grocery stores and to Sedona. Tortillas are also available online. Robb is an agent and property manager for Sotheby’s International Realty. Gretchen will turn 4 in two weeks (January) and is already reading. She knows her continents and the state capitals, so we are thrilled with her Montessori School. To keep me out of trouble, I am also the president of the board of Flagstaff Shelter Services, a secular homeless shelter that we started in 2006. Greetings! We have heard from Eliesha Nelson, who has been a member of The Cleveland Orchestra since the fall of 2000. Born and raised in Alaska, Eliesha moved to Cleveland without her family at age 15, when she joined the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Young Artist Program and attended HB. She remained at the Institute for her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music, and also attended the Royal Academy of Music in London on a Fulbright Grant. She studied with

Linda Cerone, David Russell, György Pauk and Robert Vernon. Prior to joining the Orchestra, she spent a year as acting principal viola of the Florida Philharmonic and Florida Grand Opera.

She has been heard as soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra in education concerts, the Florida Philharmonic, the San Antonio Symphony and the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, to name a few. One of her big passions is chamber music, which she taught for several years during the summer at the ENCORE School for Strings in Hudson, Ohio.

Eliesha received four GRAMMY nominations for her recording of the complete viola music of Quincy Porter. She is in pre-production for a second album of Russian sonatas. She sends greetings to all! For more information about Eliesha, visit www.elieshanelson.com.

Congratulations to Liza Mandel Siegel-Seaman and Ari on the birth of their third son, Luke Jonah. Luke joined big brothers Noah and Caleb Also in baby boy news, congratulations in July. to Alex Speck Crowley and husband Jamie on the birth of their first child, James Alexander Crowley. Alex recently finished her contract with the local NPR station and decided not to sign on for another year in order to stay home with James.

She plans to freelance with the station, as well as write for magazines, and is even considering playwriting. Alex and her family still live on Cape Cod. Mom of four Rolla Zahrawi Abbass said her kids are growing up quickly and getting into lots of activities.

Debbie Groppe Davis published an article, “The Hematologic Parameters of the Red Fish,” in the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Animal Medicine in collaboration with the New England Aquarium. She has also been doing interesting work for the Clearwater Aquarium in Florida and Disney Animal Parks and has contributed numerous sections to Clinical Veterinary Advisor - Dogs and Cats, a book for vets and vet students. Debbie’s daughter, Josephine, is 4½ and Debbie says she is becoming more and more grown up everyday. “Her imagination is amazing and we have extremely intricate tea parties with a wide variety of stuffed animals, dogs, and occasionally the real dog or cat thrown in! She has a great sense of humor and makes us laugh all the time. I never thought having a kid would be this much fun. I feel sad that they grow up too fast, but each day she is so much more interesting than the day before, so that makes me excited to see what will come next. She has already lost three teeth and is working on losing number four. The Tooth Fairy is becoming a regular at Rebecca Iredell Elger and her our house!” family moved to Los Angeles in the fall after eight wonderful years in Cancun. The move was prompted by Hermann’s new job as the general manager of the Montage Beverly Hills. Says Rebecca, “We moved into our house right before Christmas and are enjoying getting settled in and seeing things that had been in storage for eight years! We are all very happy and really enjoying

all that L.A. has to offer.”

Tiffany OrlandoWeber is enjoying her new job as an assistant professor in the department of surgery at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. Tiff and Stephan’s little girl, Marchesa, turned 3 in December. Tiff ’s mom underwent radiation for esophageal cancer in August and September and is doing well thus far.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Mrs. O! Maia Puryear is still living in the D.C. metro area, working as an attorney at the Smithsonian’s contracting office. Most of her work is dedicated to the newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is scheduled to open in 2015. Maia’s son is now 3 and into everything. “It is hard to keep up with him, that’s for sure,” she says. Maia plans to attend our Reunion in May and can’t wait to see everybody!

Tricia Mastrobuono Arnold reports, “Steve and I and the kids have been doing fine here in Falls Church, Va. They’re growing up so quickly, we’re trying to cherish every moment! For Caitlin’s birthday this past August, she got a little sister, named Ciara (sounds like ‘KEER-ah’)! We love that ‘the girls’ share a birthday, and hope it’ll be something meaningful to them as they grow up together. Liam’s an attentive big brother, living up to his name, which means ‘strong protector,’ and we’re really glad for that. The two oldest are trying out soccer and swimming this spring, and Ciara gets to go along for the ride to the rec. center … what a good sport! Sadly, I lost my paternal grandmother in September and one month later, my great uncle (who was like a grandfather to me) passed away. Jack (4) is in his third and last year at nursery school and recently had his Admissions interview at Andrew’s prep school. Patrick turned 1 in September and continues to smile his way through each day. He seems to be flying through each stage of development in an effort to catch up with his big brothers! Michael continues as vice president of Group Metro, focusing his efforts on the development of oceanfront condominiums in Juan Dolio. I was elected treasurer of the board of directors of the PTO at Andrew’s school and am enjoying the position. To cure our island fever, the boys and I spent three weeks in Boca Raton this summer. As has become a tradition, we spent part of our winter holiday at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan and we headed back to Boca to ring in Just a the New Year with Michael’s parents. few more months until our 20th Reunion. in August. They are still living in D.C. Stephanie Gale is engaged to be married on April 30, 2011. Classmate Jenny Dakin will serve as a bridesmaid. She will be taking her certification exam in February for the Adult Nurse Practitioner degree. She also recently finished her MSN classes at Case Western. Her fiancĂŠ, Jon, is applying to business school and plans to begin in the fall.

Catherine Herrick Levy and her husband welcomed a beautiful little boy, Jack Herrick Levy, on August 18, 2010. Mother and baby continue to do well. She enjoys meeting up with the children of classmates, including Laura McCreary Tuttle (Lila) and Kate Harding Lincoln (Gunner and Tegan).

Hilary Garon, her husband, John, and daughter Morgan (9 months) moved back to Cleveland Heights in July. They are having a good time rediscovering Cleveland as parents and taking care of their old Cleveland Heights house. She regularly sees Allison Weingart Grant and Meagan Armington Langworthy, and the three of them and Lisa Gelbach Erck and her son TJ had a little playdate over the holiday. Chloe Rankin Seelbach and Katie Hellmuth Martin were also supposed to come with their kids, but couldn’t make it because of conflicts. Right now she is staying home with Morgan and forgoing practicing law, but we will see if that changes in the future.

Joanne Garfinkel Sonenshine is keeping busy with her 19-month-old, Jacob, who will be a big brother in early February!

Additionally, Joanne, David and Jacob moved to a new home in Arlington, Va. and are enjoying the added space. Joanne is embarking on her third year at Conservation International as director of climate strategy and is looking forward to all the changes to come.

Bianca Motley is still in Atlanta working for a law firm. She travels a lot.

Balascio, have settled into life in New Orleans, where Hannah is a partner at The New Teacher Project. Hannah and Michael bought a home in the city’s historic Irish Channel this summer. It’s 140 years old and full of character (and weekend projects).

Mary Hauler Chomic is enjoying Columbus, working part time as a dentist in a private practice and spending the rest of her time as a mother of three girls. Olivia Elizabeth Chomic was born 11/1/10 and joined 5-yearold twin sisters Ella and Grace. Life is busy!

Catharina Reinke-Kretzer is still working with her husband, Tobias, at the University Clinic Mainz as M.D. for radiooncology. Florentine turned 4 in September, Filippa will turn 2 in May and there is a new baby due in July 2011.

Catharina and her family are very happily living in Nierstein, a little vine village next to the Rhein.

Gaby Ortino Stear and Kevin welcomed boy/ girl twins Avery and Sophia on 1/24/10. They were born three months early! They stayed in the NICU for three months, and are now a year old.

They are super healthy and thriving! Their eldest son, Jackson, is about to turn 3, so they have had constant chaos. She is taking a break from law Kim while staying home with the twins.

Resnick recently moved home to Shaker with her husband, Jonathan, and daughter Haley. They celebrated the arrival of Jack Charles in August.

Kim is an assistant professor in gynecologic oncology at University Hospitals and loves the department she joined. Kim spent some time with Megan Millard in San Francisco this past March and Joanne this summer and is looking forward to catching up with Cleveland classmates soon!

Mary Anne Maine Grimwade, her husband, Rob, and family still live in Chardon and are coping with the early winter snowstorms. Mary Anne is still enjoying her time as a stay-at-home mom. She knows how quickly time is flying and is trying to cherish it. Her daughters both attend Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby. Julia is 4 and in Pre-K and Emily is 3 and in EC (Enrichment Center). Rob and Mary Anne welcomed Charles Robert Grimwade (Charlie) to the world in January 2011. He weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces and was 20¼ inches long. Aside from enjoying her time as a mom, Mary Anne has dabbled in some other activities this year. She has taught a few yoga classes for children and started showing some photographs in galleries again. All in all, it has Ellen Busse been a busy and fulfilling time!

Hurley and her husband, Brady, welcomed their second child, Abigail Marguerite, on December 31. They also have a 2-year-old son, Mac, who is very active and excited about his little sister.

Ellen and Brady bought a house this past fall and moved to Bainbridge. Ellen continues to work part time as a speech therapist for Westlake and Brady works for University School.

Courtney Wilson Jonke and her family have been on the go nonstop since selling their house in Chagrin on December 7. They are in the process of moving

to their new house in Winnetka … it is a lot!

Carin Lightner is still teaching at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro. She purchased a home last year and is enjoying the “growing pains” of being a first-time homeowner.

From Marsha Lawson: “For the past two years I’ve been working on cruises − Azamara Club Cruises and Celebrity Cruises, to be exact. With Azamara, I performed as a cabaret vocalist in both production shows with four other singers and a solo show (some of which I’ve posted on YouTube). On Celebrity, I performed in a cast of 18 performers. I was one of only four singers, as the rest were dancers and acrobats. We performed in EVERY style you can imagine, from Bollywood to Italian opera – yes, I am serious! Our signature hit was a Cirque du Soleil-style show where I sang abstract straight tone music created specifically for the show. It was tremendously wonderful and I was so proud to be a part of it all! While on the ships, I had the chance to travel in Europe, the Caribbean and parts of Central America. As of now, I am back in Ohio and in search of my next adventure. With performing arts there are so many creative opportunities, so I find that the hardest part is choosing which one to pursue! It’s exciting and challenging. I am still unsure if I will be in the Cleveland area for our 15th Reunion (it’s beginning to feel surreal now −15 YEARS!), but I would be so delighted to see everyone.”

Katherine Barr Hollingsworth, Adam and big sister Alice (2½) welcomed Duncan Barr Hollingsworth on September 9, 2010, then, in October, the Hollingsworth family moved from Boston back to the Cleveland area. Adam joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio and Katherine plans to explore job opportunities after spending some time at home with Alice and Duncan.

Katy Doggett and Jamie Burgess were married in Cleveland at a fabulous wedding at the Cleveland Institute of Art on Jan 29. They continue to live in London.

Blair Rumpeltin Licht, along with husband Jason and son Charlie (2), welcomed Zoe Elizabeth into the world November 24, 2010. The Licht family resides in Providence, R.I. Jen Dolin Lowrey and husband Casey welcomed their first child, daughter Kate, on December 9, 2010.

Stephenie Slane Lambert writes, “We are doing really well out here in Tucson, Ariz. My husband, Jeff, has a very busy and growing medical practice, so we don’t get to Cleveland very much, but my family still lives there and I keep updated on HB stuff online. We have three children now: Emily, 5, Jeffrey, 4, and John, 1. I just finished my first year of homeschooling with my daughter! I love being a homeschooling mom.”

deenahbyramjee@gmail.com Here are a few notable updates from the Class of 1999. Julia Morse Fernandez married Carlos Fernandez on September 4, 2010 in Chicago.

She also started a new job at Kraft Foods, where she works in global external communications and media relations.

Katie Horowitz has finished the coursework for her Ph.D. from Berkeley and moved to Cleveland with her husband. She is working on her dissertation on the comparative ethnography of drag king and queen performance cultures. Katie hopes to graduate in 2012, but in the meantime is expecting her first child this June.

Carter Denny is sad to say goodbye to New Orleans after five years but looks forward to moving to Washington, D.C. for her neurology residency at Georgetown.

Lonny Hrabak was recently engaged to Tony Mawby, and they live in Cleveland Heights with their three labs − Paul, Barrow and Butch. She works for Heather B. After HB, Katherine Williams went on to Cornell, where she received a B.S., majoring in neurological biology. She then went on to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where she received an M.D. in May 2010. In addition, she received an M.S. in anatomy from Case Western Reserve in May 2010. She is now in her first year of medical internship at the University of Chicago – North Shore Hospital.

Katherine will start a three-year residency in radiology at Duke University mid-2011.

The two will move to Austin, Texas this year for his Court of Appeals clerkship.

Hello, ladies. Everything seems to be going along swimmingly for everyone. No surprise there; the Class of 1997 ROCKS! Here are the updates: Alice Ours Vitiello states, “All is well over in my neck of the woods; we love living back in Cleveland and reconnecting with lots of old HB, US and Laurel friends. Tony and I are happy to share that we are expecting a baby girl in late February! By the next issue of class news, we’ll have baby pics to share.” Lauren Oviatt Brennan is expecting her second baby in April and hopes to also deliver her final RISD photography portfolio in May. Congratulations, Alice and Lauren! Congratulations are also due to Robyn Traub, who finished up a successful running season this fall, completing both the Chicago and New York Marathons.

A number of our classmates have exciting job news to share. Kate Framke reports that she is “transitioning into the fitness world, where I hope to work with families and kids. So far we have set up a fit club that meets three times a week; it’s going pretty well.”

Megan Clark writes, “My biggest news is a new job − hurray! As of November, I run a community engagement initiative at California College of the Arts, a fantastic mix of helping faculty to write curriculum, matching students with community organizations and fostering a shift in the way artists and designers participate in sustainability and social justice activism. I love it. LOVE it.” It is definitely a blessing when one’s job is not work.

I heard from one of our long-lost classmates, Kathleen Sloan. Here’s a quick catch-up on her life: “After graduating from HB, I attended two years of college at the Cleveland Institute of Music. I transferred to USC (University of Southern California) as a violin performance major, and graduated in 2002. Thereafter, I won a job with both the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet, and lived in Houston, Texas from 2003-2008. I really enjoyed my work with the ballet and opera, but after living there for five years I was ready for a change. My best friend, Caroline Campbell ’98, urged me to move back to Los Angeles to be a member of her string quartet, Sonus Quartet (www.SonusQuartet). Now that I am a member of Sonus, my work consists of a variety of musical opportunities ranging from recording for pop-rock artists, recording for film scores, regular appearance on television and performances all over the world.” How exciting, Kathleen! Perhaps Sonus could play at our 15-year Reunion?

I, Kate Bennett, have certainly

experienced change since my last contribution. My partner of six years moved out last weekend, but in May 2010 I obtained a full-time, salaried job as a psychotherapist in rural Ohio. My youngest client is four years old; my oldest client is 60. Gotta love change − and employment! I hope all of you in cold weather climates are staying warm. If not, you can always crash Emily Gent’s wedding − May 6, 2011 in MAUI! Just kidding, Emily. Enjoy a beautiful, wondrous wedding. All my best to you and yours.

Kathleen Adams is gearing up for Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen, Volume 4: Let’s Get Active! on Saturday, March 5 in the Bronx honoring International Women’s Month. The goal this year is to use hip hop to initiate dialogue and inspire action in supporting healthier nutrition, more physical activity and increased community involvement among women and their families.

This year she anticipates 1,200 in attendance!

Kathleen is finishing up her coursework for a master’s in urban studies in May and will graduate in the winter of 2011.

Michelle Brown is in her first year of medical school at Ohio State University. She is applying to research projects in anesthesia and hematology/oncology for the summer.

Nina Sreshta is also in her first year of medical school, at the University of Cincinnati.

Mariam Khan graduated from Case Western Reserve and received a B.A. in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism and an M.S. in nutrition. She is working in research in the Cleveland Clinic’s Vascular Medicine department.

Mariam has applied to dental school and is looking forward to finalizing her decision as to where she will end up in the fall.

Sam Davidson is living in Hollywood and working at Mosaic Media Group, a film and television production/talent management company. Her company represents comedic staples including Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey.

Lindsay Kneen, Maddy Coquillette and Caitlin Patterson are living in Boston.

Lindsay assists in research on hypertension and diabetes at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Maddy attends Harvard Medical School and Caitlin works at an investment consulting firm for nonprofits. Caitlin enjoys taking weekend trips to NYC to visit Nora Malgieri and Courtney Kundtz.

Breen McDonald and Caroline Coburn are working in New York. Breen is working for The Children’s Aid Society and Caroline is working for Prep for Prep. Caroline and her family had a great time traveling to Jose Ignacio, Uruguay for Christmas. Tierney Healey is also living in New York, working as a production assistant at Rugby Ralph Lauren. Alison Nahra is headed for a Semester at Sea through UVA, where she will travel to 11 countries in 104 days. Upon her return, she will head to Baltimore for the summer to join the Rookie Program at Under Armour.

Katharine (KK) Koury, Alison Nahra and Angela Groves − and one former member of the class, Juliet King, are presently studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa.

Speaking of Africa, Mrs. Leigh King, a past HB staff member who worked over the years in the HB libraries (first as a volunteer, later as an assistant to Phyllis Harper and Marilyn Hyde), sends the HB community greetings.

Daughters Juliet King ’08 and Olivia King ’10 attended HB from 1998 until 2002, and Juliet still considers HB her “real” school. Juliet returned to visit HB at the end of 2007, and one of her HB classmates, Kathryn Bashour ’08, also spent six weeks with the King family in 2007, attending St. Mary’s School in South Africa with Juliet and Olivia. Juliet is in her third year at the University of Cape Town and is studying politics, philosophy and economics. Olivia has just received the results of her final examinations, and she obtained five distinctions and was placed in the top one percent of drama students writing the Independent Exam Board examinations (their year ends in December).

Hello, Class of 2009! I, Ali Coughlin, have been very busy this year studying business at Babson College. I joined Sigma Kappa Sorority last year and held a leadership position. Over the summer, I interned at Dealer Tire, working in the human resources department. I plan to study abroad for the entire year next year.

It seems that many of our other classmates have been quite busy, as well!

Simone Billings is going into her second semester as a resident assistant at Philadelphia University.

She attended and presented at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a resident assistant conference and discussed issues of racial identity. She is studying fashion merchandising and helped out at Philadelphia Fashion Week in the fall. In February, she will be helping out backstage at New York Fashion Week.

Sara Smith took a semester off and traveled to both India and Costa Rica. She recently transferred to Miami University and is majoring in education. Over the summer, she worked at University School Day Camp as a counselor for 5-year-olds.

Amanda Leb is majoring in international and area studies at Washington University. Amanda is a program leader for an organization called Natural Ties, which brings together students and developmentally disabled adults from the community. She also joined Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority last spring and was elected president. Congratulations, Amanda!

Allison Doll is majoring in international studies at Johns Hopkins University and joined Phi Mu sorority.

Sam Stahler spent time in Europe in January. She traveled to Berlin, Brussels, Dresden and Amsterdam. She has had a great time studying political science and seeing the sights.

Ari Taxman is double majoring in music and theater performance at Oklahoma City University. She is being considered for two plays at her school. Break a leg, Ari! Today I made a difference in tomorrow.

Who She Is: Cindy Calfee Murphy is one of those people who totally lights up a room. It doesn’t matter if she’s talking about her children, her new business, or her alma mater - she’s always full of enthusiasm and pride. And her outgoing nature and friendly mannerisms seem to put everyone around her at ease, whether she’s known them for 10 minutes or for 10 years.

What She Remembers Most About HB: Although

her personality predisposes her to be adventurous and open to new challenges and opportunities, Cindy credits the school with giving her the education and encouragement she needed to spread her wings. She especially appreciated the school’s exceptional humanities programming, which she says taught her to think for herself and prepared her well for college, graduate school, motherhood, and professional life.

“HB gave me a very secure base,” she says. “The school’s philosophy is very closely related to the philosophy that guided me in raising my children. When you give a child a good foundation, they have the emotional and intellectual tools they need to meet their full potential.

HB gives girls these same fundamentals and empowers them to take on whatever challenges life may give them. The confidence HB instilled in me and my daughters is much like what one would get from the bond of a strong family connection. It enabled us as women to go out into the world, take some risks and maybe change the world a little bit at a time.”

Why She Supports The School:

Cindy remembers vividly when former Spanish teacher Sylvia Kenneweg went the extra mile to encourage her daughter Margot, helping her to find part-time jobs that would give her real-world experience in making use of her considerable Spanish-speaking skills.

“It’s a gift when a teacher can see a spark in a student,” Cindy says.

“But it’s even more valuable when that teacher takes the time and the initiative to nurture her as she finds her way.”

Today, Margot is the lead teacher in a bilingual classroom in a large New York City public school, where she works hard every day to help a new generation of students discover their own voices. Cindy also can tell similar stories about how Science Research & Engineering

Program Director Patty Hunt gave her daughter Kathleen the tools she needed to succeed in a vastly different educational culture.

Kathleen is now studying biochemistry at Oxford University, UK, in her fourth and master’s year.

What She Wants To Tell Her HB Sisters: A consistent contributor to the school’s Annual Fund and a member of the Mary E. Raymond Legacy Society since 2008, Cindy says that she supports HB because of its broad reach.

“When I was a student, HB was a small school with a prescribed curriculum. It’s not that way anymore. Today, HB is not at all parochial; on the contrary, students come from 72 surrounding communities. It’s a thriving intellectual environment where young women can find who they are in the context of a dynamic curriculum. These are normal kids who have developed great skills and great perspectives, and they’re going out and touching the world,” Cindy says. “If you plant the seed of a legacy here, your legacy will flourish and live on around the globe.

When you think about giving to HB, you should see it as giving to one of the top single-sex schools in the nation, not the small girls’ school in Shaker Heights.”

Where You Can Find Her: Cindy holds a bachelor’s degree from Pomona College and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. That education, along with the skills she learned in her early professional life as a congressional aide to Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield and as an executive with National City Bank, prepared her well for her current occupation. In 2010, Cindy and her husband, Brian, took ownership of VisiMax Technologies Inc., a Twinsburg, Ohio, company specializing in precision optical coatings.

In less than a year, sales have grown by one-third and the employee base has nearly doubled. Cindy is the company’s Vice President for Human Resources and Marketing.

In addition to serving as a member of HB’s Board of Trustees, Cindy also sits on the board for The Gathering Place, a local organization that supports cancer patients and their families through a host of free programs and services. Still living in the Cleveland area, Cindy often spends time with some of her HB classmates and other alumnae, and she’s always looking to reconnect with others. Hathaway Brown has always been an important part of Cindy’s life.

She attended HB from preschool through 12th grade and daughters Margot ’04 and Kathleen ’07 also are alumnae. Even sons Christopher and Andrew are graduates of the school’s Early Childhood program.

Since 2004, Cindy has been a dedicated member of HB’s Board of Trustees, and she has served as chair for both the Development Committee and the Buildings & Grounds Committee.
