Keeping in Touch

WELCOME FROM THE HEADTEACHER - Ms Sue Maguire Welcome to the second edition of our magazine, now named The Torch! You may be interested as to how we arrived at this name. The Torch symbol is important in education today as we continue even more to deliver academic excellence across the generations of young people we educate. We pride ourselves on lighting up the lives of our students with a rich interwoven tapestry of creativity, inspiration, ambition and of course, the pure enjoyment of education. I hope the many celebratory articles in this edition continue to give a taste for all that is great about Hatch End High School, which has only been made

possible of course by our students who received the best possible start in our local primary schools. If you would like to see or hear more about experiences at Hatch End High School, as always, do not hesitate to contact me either personally on admin@hatchend.harrow.sch.uk or via our school admissions officer on casey@ hatchend.harrow.sch.uk. Wishing you and your children a very successful 2018.

WELCOME FROM THE GOVERNORS - Mrs Kate Deed I have served as a parent governor at Hatch End High School for 18 years, when my daughter joined the school. I am now a Member Appointed Governor and one of the Directors since we became an Academy in 2011. I am the Vice Chair, Chair of the Student Performance and Curriculum sub-committee, the designated Special Needs Governor and the Safeguarding Governor. One of my key tasks as Chair of the Curriculum Committee is to set a schedule for departmental governor visits. The focus of a visit is determined in advance with the head of department and the linked member of the Senior Leadership Team and ties in always to our students’ progress and the school’s current improvement plan. Following the visit, a report is presented to the governing body about the findings and whether any follow-up visits are required.

visits to school,

As Safeguarding Governor, I carry out regular safeguarding

checking the school’s records and procedures and talking to staff and students about their understanding of key safeguarding issues. The well-being of our young people is always our paramount priority. I am always impressed with the results of my visits; however, that doesn’t mean we can become complacent and there is always room for improvement. The Head and the school’s Safeguarding Team, and we as governors, take the safety and well-being of the whole school community very seriously. Although my own children have left full-time education, I have chosen to continue my work as a governor at the school. Hatch End High School remains very dear to my heart. It is totally inclusive – something I see first-hand during my visits as Special Needs Governor. Students are encouraged always to achieve to their full potential and governors are justifiably proud that the school consistently achieves significantly above the national average Value Added in terms of student academic progress. Governors need to be impartial, prepared to offer the school challenge and support for the benefit of all students. We often have vacancies for parent governors and if you think you might be interested, please get in touch (governors@hatchend.harrow. sch.uk). One of the existing governors will be happy to discuss with you what is involved.

YEAR 7 MAKE A FLYING START We believe getting transition right makes all the difference. Year 7 are now nearly a whole term into their high school career. It seems an age since we first met them back in July on their first Induction visit, when they spent the day meeting each other and key members of staff. It was a great experience, watching them problem-solve in teams in numeracy; learn tongue twisters and phrases of self- introduction in a range of modern and community languages and take part in an exciting engineering project, building a vessel from materials provided to safely transport an egg from a height. These activities provided fun but challenging tasks, giving students their first opportunity to both learn and co-operate with each other and develop their resilience whilst working in a team – all vital life skills. “I really enjoyed coming to Hatch End High School. I came from abroad and was not only worried about joining a new school, but learning how a British school worked. I should not have worried as all the staff helped me and within a week, I was all set to get started. I became a School Council Representative for my year group and I tried out many clubs and competitions. My tutor was so helpful, guiding me through and advertising opportunities. I have also been regularly rewarded for my efforts with badges, certificates, excellence tokens and letters home. Thank you all very much.”

Rasha Abbas (Previous Primary School attended: International School)

Of course it was also an important “Rites of Passage” and social event, providing the opportunity to meet students from other schools and begin the process of making new friendships. As a result of positive feedback received from both students and parents /carers, we will be extending our Induction Programme even further in 2018 to include a range

2

of specially designed “Friendship” sessions in April to June before they start in September, where new students will be invited to join us for a two-hour after-school session to try out new subjects and meet other students joining HEHS, again seeking to build their confidence and aspirations.

“I really love Design and Technology and work hard in Maths, as I want to be an architect. I attend after-school clubs so that I can learn more. Many teachers run clubs and encourage us to stay and get involved.“

Shayaanali Syed (Previous Primary School attended: Priestmead Primary School)

Our new Year 7 students bounded toward us with an exhilarating confidence in September, ready and prepared to join our unique HEHS Vertical Pastoral Groups, where Year 7 and 8 students are tutored together to build the strong sense of community for which the school is so famous. This system allows our Year 8 students to nurture and mentor their Year 7 peers through the first few days and weeks at high school. This provides the Year 7 students with the opportunity to ask questions from somebody close to their age who had just finished the journey they were starting! We also provided another key opportunity for new students to bond with the rest of the school community by advertising for Year 7 and 8 students to volunteer to guide parents alongside students from KS4 and KS5, working in triads to showcase the school on Open Evening. This proved very popular and provided an early opportunity for our youngest students to accept responsibility, show confidence, knowledge and initiative. They all did us proud! Key Stage 3 operates on a HOUSE system. Four houses named after inspirational people, chosen for expressing true passion and ambition in their individual fields - Einstein, Malala, Angelou and Attenborough. HOUSES give students a sense of belonging to a community and facilitate team-work and healthy competition - key skills needed in the wider community. This gives rise to a great opportunity for competition! The Year 7 and 8

students are set a range of challenges and competitions, including inter-house sport, campaign design and fundraising. A HOUSE cup is awarded to HOUSE representatives in the joint KS3 assembly and TORCH TOTALZERS are displayed on a digital board in main school reception, so that students can follow their HOUSE progress. In addition, our students are encouraged to collect EXCELLENCE TOKENS from individual subject teachers and PRAISE POINTS, resulting in certificates, badges and leading to an end of year formal graduation ceremony which parents are invited to in June. We believe that all our young people should be in a school in which they feel proud to belong and want to do their very best. In terms of academic transition, all our Year 7 students are set personal “flightpaths” for learning to ensure they are working at the right level and are challenged at every opportunity in all subjects. Our homework weekly projects are also a unique feature of the school with phased, challenging and engaging independent tasks. We also recognise that sometimes students find new tasks difficult so we provide all new students with the opportunity to access Homework Club if they need a quiet place to work or receive support. This is another part of the induction process – embedding the importance of independent learning but in a safe and structured environment.

“I was nervous about my first term at Hatch End. I worried about settling in, but I found that the teachers do everything they can to help new students. I have really enjoyed my first term, there are loads of clubs during breaks and after school. I personally attend the Science Club, Coding Club and the Sign Language Club.”

Eliza Kaminska-Benadat (Previous Primary School attended: Weald Rise Primary School)

This member of staff seeks to challenge students at every opportunity, advertising all of the in-house opportunities on offer and building student aspiration. She seeks to plant seeds for the future, promoting universities, apprenticeships and encouraging students to begin to think about their future and set themselves ambitious targets right from the beginning of their high school career. Last but not least, is our timetabled enrichment activities – one hour, once every two weeks. Each student selects an activity from a menu each term and follows three enrichment activities across the year – introducing students to new experiences and activities. This year these include Gaelic Football, Board games, Health, Sleuths, British Sign Language and Music Technology, to name but a few. These new experiences ensures that all our students access a number of additional activities and seek to widen their personal and social skills. Hatch End High School’s ethos of WE CARE begins as our new students come through our gates.

Our hugely experienced and supportive Key Stage 3 team comprise a Head of Lower School, a Senior Leader - Key Stage 3, a non-teaching Year Team Assistant and a range of fantastic enthusiastic tutors as well as a “Raising Aspirations Co-ordinator.”

“I felt very welcomed and have taken up lots of opportunities. I have made real progress in my lessons and made some good friends. I love the new lessons I have not done before and really enjoy my timetabled enrichment lesson.”

Yasmin Ali (Previous Primary School attended: Marlborough Primary School)

LEADERS OF TOMORROW We believe it is our responsibility to engage students as partners throughout their education, particularly in the decision-making that affects them every single day. We aim to put democracy into action with students being consulted through both elected and selected student systems. The Student Council comprises “elected” members who represent each year group and feedback their views at regular Key Stage Meetings. Each year group has two elected chairs who represent the Key Stage at Executive Meetings with the Headteacher and members of the Senior Leadership Team. The ‘Community Slice’ is a panel consisting of students who are deliberately “selected” to ensure all groups of students are represented fairly. Heads of Year are asked to select a panel of students which best represents the demographic of the Year Group. This panel is used to research current topical issues in the school and allows students who may not always wish to put themselves forward for election to give feedback in a variety of formats – written feedback is often gathered to allow students who do not wish to speak

MESSAGES FROM OUR HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL Caitlin Pettitt, Year 13

Previous Primary School Attended: Pinner Park School Working within a friendly and talented community such as Hatch End High School provides an extensive programme of opportunities to thrive. I chose to stay at Hatch End to study my A Levels due to the combination of high quality teaching and the many opportunities that the school offers. During my time, the school has offered me both great academic and personal support. Hatch End offers endless extra-curricular activities from sporting clubs that run weekly in and out of the school to fantastic arts and music clubs. If things sometimes do not go as well as hoped, Hatch End offers great and dedicated support by running interventions after school, weekends and during holidays and half term. These additional opportunities enabled me to gain the highest grades at GCSE and I am very appreciative for the school having the confidence in my talents even when I didn’t always myself! All these factors combined makes Hatch End a school full of dedicated, talented and enthusiastic staff and students that creates a great learning and working environment.

out the chance to be heard. We believe that students can become more effective learners when they are engaged in the processes of democracy and active participation. Within the school, we also have members of the Harrow Youth Parliament who debate local issues within Harrow and Anti-Bullying Campaign Peer Mentors who promote anti-bullying strategies to implement within the school. All students appreciate the value of debating via our engaging PCSHE Programme which enables them to work in small groups, listen and contribute to larger presentations on a whole range of relevant issues for young people in society. Finally, throughout the year, students are also given many voluntary opportunities to participate in initiatives such as the BBC News Report, DebateMate and The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. At Hatch End we believe our students’ views matter!

Olachi Akin, Year 13

Previous Primary School Attended: St Mary’s C of E School Choosing Hatch End High School in Year 7 has been the most important decision that I have made. Continuing to be surrounded by highly motivated and ambitious students as well as excellent teachers was very important to me coming into Sixth Form. The dedication of the teachers to their subject means that they will go to any length to ensure that you have understood the lesson but moreover enjoyed it too! If anything, for any reason, has not been understood they are always willing to devote more time to your learning after school, Saturdays and even in the school holidays. The diverse range of students coming from different cultures and backgrounds means that everyone has a different story but everyone is motivated to succeed. Seeing people progress and get better is the kind of environment that continues to push me to better myself and remain ambitious. The extra-curricular activities, ranging from the basketball team to chess club, allow learning to extend beyond the classroom; as you learn qualities and skills that will be with you for life. Hatch End High School provides you with the tools and support to ensure that you develop into an excellent young man or woman, ready for the world. I am looking forward to successfully entering university next year and I will always be grateful to HEHS for providing me with the a strong foundation for my future success.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE - EXCITING REBUILD We are looking to the future and strive continuously to improve our facilities. We want to ensure that our students have the best educational experience. To this end we have an exciting strategy to transform our school site by 2020. Brand New School Block As you will hopefully be aware, we are delighted to have successfully bid for a multi-million pound brand new school building as part of the Government’s Priority School Building Programme. Over the autumn term we have been working closely with Government officials and Kier, the successful contractor, to develop the details of the new teaching block. The new building will provide 23 classrooms, including specialist ICT rooms, plus a showcase state-of-the-art library. It will replace part of the main block at the back of the school site, which has reached the end of its functional life. We are pleased that the proposed location of the new building is now to the front of the school, which not only results in a more coherent and compact site but means the construction phase will be separate from the operation of the school.

fantastic facility including new seating, lighting and sound system, plus up-to-the- minute cinema screen and projection. For those unable to attend the drop-in session, please see our website for the latest news (www.hatchend. harrow.sch.uk). We will also be providing updates on the development throughout the year with regular updates in the school newsletter.

“The heart of a school will always transcend bricks and mortar. However, I think all would agree that the new build at Hatch End High School is going to truly transform our young peoples’ learning experiences in the 21st century.” Ms Sue Maguire, Headteacher.

Newly refurbished Great Hall.

The demolition of the old block frees up acres of open space at the back of the school to extend and enhance our outdoor sports facilities, including a new football pitch. We are now about to embark on the detailed planning application and we are holding an exciting drop-in event on Wednesday, 10th January 2018 from 3.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. in the Great Hall. We warmly invite all parents, students and the wider community to come and see the latest proposals and designs for the new school building including the timeline for the work. It also provides an opportunity to talk to the builders about the construction process and meet the people working on the project.

OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC SUCCESS - 2016/2017 We have had yet another year of fantastic results at both A Level and GCSE. This is a worthy culmination of all our students’ hard work over the last two years and comes as a direct result of the outstanding teaching from an exceptionally well qualified staff body and support from our parent body. All should be congratulated and we are very proud of our school, which is consistently in the best 20% of schools sixth forms in the whole country for academic achievement. We wish all our young people the very best as they move on to university and beyond – they thoroughly deserve a bright and prosperous future. We are equally pleased again with the fantastic performance of so many of our young people who have just left Year 11 having received their GCSE grades in August.

KEY STAGE 4 - 2016/2017: We are very pleased again with the fantastic performance of so many of our young people who received their GCSE grades this year, reflecting 5 years of hard work and dedication by themselves and our dedicated staff body. We were particularly delighted at the high number of the top grades, 7-9 in a year which has seen such changes with more rigorous course content. Results are still provisional at this stage until the national formula is set for progress. Our provisional Progress 8 is placing the school once again ‘Above Average’ at 0.24. Please note that the figure of 0.19 in the DFE Performance Tables relates to unvalidated data. Ariana Samadi (Previous Primary School attended: Pinner Park)

PARTNERSHIP WORKING We believe that successful schools do not exist in a vacuum, but rather look outwards to work alongside primary and secondary schools, universities and sought-out employers in Harrow and beyond. To ensure our young people flourish, the partnerships that we develop are integral to our success. Our partnerships are far reaching as we continue to play an important part in our local community and yet also reach out into the wider world with national, international and global organisations. These strong collaborative partnerships enrich our curriculum offer and provide students with unique and valuable opportunities, which support and enhance their learning including trips, motivational speakers, visits, workshops, taster sessions and mentoring.

undertaking problem-solving exercises within the workplace and hear from staff how they secured employment with such a prestigious employer. Some of our young scientists have taken part in the British Science Association’s CREST Awards Scheme where they have been able to take up exciting enrichment opportunities to explore real world science technology, engineering and maths projects. Meanwhile, Business students have been taking part in ‘The Big Idea’. Hosted by staff and students from Middlesex University, this engaging and creative workshop harnessed students ideas for possible business opportunities and taught them the presentational skills to ‘pitch’ to a panel of judges from the university… next stop The Dragon’s Den. Just a few examples of our recent primary school partnership working are below: Community Christmas Play - “Joy to the World”: Students from Hatch End High School had great pleasure in supporting Weald Rise, one of our popular feeder schools, with a Community Christmas Play celebrating the diversity of our communities at a very special time of year. Members of the talented HEHS Band, several of whom previously attended Weald Rise, played carols and our choir sang along with their students. Three of our Sixth Form Performing Arts students played the shepherds and Mr Firth, one of our key members of staff for Primary transition, provided sound and lighting. We performed the play twice, once to the whole school and then again in the afternoon to parents and members of the community.

Above all, the partnership activities broaden our students’ horizons, taking their learning beyond the classroom and providing unique insights. We have actively developed strong partnerships with prestigious institutions, including Cambridge University, UCL, Imperial College London, Goldsmiths’ College, Queen Mary University of London, Paediatric Department at Northwick Park Hospital and Cern, Switzerland. For example, the Brilliant Club operates from Year 7 -12 and has enabled our students to visit Goldsmith’s University where they experienced lectures, tutorials and write a university quality dissertation on a subject of their choice. Recently, our keen coders have visited Dell Computing as part of a six-day insight into industry Programme where they delighted in

It was a great success and really enjoyable working in partnership to bring the local community together.

HEHS staff and pupils did an amazing job today. You should be very proud of them. The acting, singing, playing of the instruments and your students being role models to our pupils worked very well. Our parents are so full of praise for your staff and pupils. Thanks for allowing your school to be a part of this project. We had a most appreciative audience which included residents and parents who commented on the convivial atmosphere. We hope to continue our emerging team-work.” Headteacher, Weald Rise Primary School

Supportive Sports Leaders: Many primary schools take the opportunity to use secondary students as coaches or sports leaders. HEHS provided a referee and our Community Sports Leaders supported a 9-a-side football match between Cedars Manor and another local primary school, as Cedars are still without pitches owing to this rebuild. Whilst Cedars lost the game, the school said the team really enjoyed being able to play in the league again and we were grateful for the support provided. We are looking forward to supporting Grimsdyke School over the year using Sports Leaders in a range of exciting sporting events. In summer 2017, our students and staff helped out at Pinner Park and Vaughan Primary Schools’ Sport Days.

“On behalf of Vaughan Primary School, I would like to thank the Head of PE at Hatch End High School and the Year 9 students for helping to run our Primary School Sports Day. The girls were a credit to the school. They were mature, sensible, approachable and most importantly enthusiastic. We are keen to have Hatch End High students back next year as they really made a positive impact on the children and the sports day.” Headteacher, Vaughan Primary School.

AT THE FOREFRONT OF TEACHER TRAINING At Hatch End High School, we recruit and train a number of high quality teachers each year. Our challenging and supportive in-house training programme enables teachers to develop their skills ‘on the job’. We are the only school in Harrow to belong to the highly prestigious Teacher Training Programme. This means we are able to employ the highest calibre graduates from top universities. Through close mentoring, coaching, best pratice observation and feedback, our trainee teachers develop at a rapid pace. Trainees are encouraged to experiment in the classroom, trialling creative teaching strategies that have been proven to increase

engagement and progress in the classroom. All of our teacher training is underpinned by educational theory, drawing on the work of key practitioners such as Doug LeMov and Daisy Christodoulou. Our training provision has been praised by TeachFirst and our link universities, and we are often used as a model of best practice within the Borough. Support and training for our trainee teachers doesn’t stop once they have completed their training, career development programmes have meant that a number of our trainee teachers have progressed into Middle Leadership positions in the first few years of their careers. We have recently released vacancies for our salaried Schools Direct Teacher Training route, starting in September 2018. If you are thinking about getting into teaching and want to train in a supportive, forward-thinking school, please check the UCAS website. https://www.ucas.com/school-direct-salaried-programmes-england

UNIVERSITY DESTINATIONS - 2017 We ensure our students have the best possible choices for when they leave us. We are very proud that once again our Year 13 students’ high achievements at A Level have meant that they have successfully moved on to the degree courses and university destinations of their choice. Furthermore, students from Hatch End High School were nearly three times more successful than national average in moving on to top-rated universities after completing their Sixth Form studies.

This has been a great experience that I believe should be more open to students from all backgrounds. Since starting university, I have worked on the Lumina Course which works to make Oxbridge more accessible to state school students. Going to university has also opened up many different opportunities for me and this summer I am travelling to Hong Kong to teach English. I am looking forward to starting my second year at Cambridge and seeing what the future brings.

Alongside studying, I have been a mentor to young people for five years and have worked at a counselling firm in Lewisham and gained first-hand experience working as a counsellor. I’m now going onto study a Masters in Counselling Children and Young People at University of Northampton where I aim to get a 1st. My plan for the future is to be a Young Person’s Counsellor and help counsel young people who have mental illnesses whether in schools or in a counselling firm.

ELVIS BWOMONO FULFILS YOUTHFUL PROMISE WITH SOUTHEND UNITED SIGNING Eighteen-year-old, former Hatch End High School student Elvis Bwomono (who left the school in 2015) has recently signed a three-year contract to play for League One side Southend United as a professional. Elvis, who was named as their Youth Team Player of the Year in 2016, has only recently made the transition to first-team football, making his ‘Shrimpers’ debut last month in the Checkatrade Trophy against Gillingham F.C. Following his sixth appearance for the club, and a Man-of-the-Match performance against rivals Rochdale, Elvis said: “It’s just wonderful – something I have dreamed of and wanted to do since I was a kid – for it to finally be happening at Southend, and for the club to want me as a professional player, is amazing.” Elvis’ PE teachers at Hatch End High remember him as an enthusiastic and talented sportsman who was always very passionate about football. They support all young people to achieve their dreams and put in place flexible measures to ensure academic progress is never compromised. HATCH END HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUES TO LAY FOUNDATIONS FOR STUDENTS’ FUTURES At Hatch End High School, we value the continued success of our past students. Hatch End High School enters the new 2017/18 academic year seeing two prestigious awards granted to former students. Parth Jivrajani has received the RIBA South Prize at Oxford Brookes School of Architecture from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The Chair of both RIBA South Region and RIBA Oxfordshire, Mark Shipton, presented Parth (24) with his prize for overall excellence. The award was given at the End of Year Show where Jivrajani impressed judges, including Shipton and Dan Wadsworth of Jessop and Cook Architects, beating over 600 architects across Oxfordshire. Parth envisaged a folding, adaptable potter’s colony, inspired by the pattern and the folding nature of the hornbeam leaf. The structure is made from bamboo and other local materials whilst permanent spaces are made using compressed earth bricks. He says: “the deployable structure is versatile and allows various configurations, such as liveable

structures, market stalls and tent shelters. The community will learn to use sustainable construction methods and develop other essential skills allowing them to become a self-perpetuating community.” A stone’s throw away across the country; First Class results were honoured to Peter Choy. Choy, who left Hatch End’s Sixth Form in 2014, will be made a Scholar of St John’s College, University of Cambridge in November and, in addition, awarded a College Prize and a Townsend Scholarship. Hatch End High School’s Headteacher, Sue Maguire said, “We are incredibly proud of all our alumni, producing engineers and architects of a high calibre such as Peter and Parth is at the heart of what we aim to achieve as a school committed to each and every student’s academic success and personal wellbeing.”

CHARACTER EDUCATION ENRICHMENT We value the importance of inspirational teaching and learning in the classroom which ensures our students’ academic success. We also believe that an outstanding education offers all students an extensive range of extra experiences which will enable them to develop and be truly successful in life. We ensure our young people have full access to the same kind of opportunities as students in the private sector. In Years 7 and 8, all students have a timetabled hour where they are able to choose from an enrichment offer which will provide them with new skills and broaden their horizons. They are also actively encouraged to become involved in a wide range of supplementary activities provided before and after school, at break-time and out of school hours. These will include sport and the arts as well as character forming programmes such as Duke of Edinburgh; the Brilliant Club; Debate Mate; Young Enterprise; Maths Challenge; BBC News Report and the National Citizen Service. Our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics enrichment programme is second to none, and students compete in regular challenges as well as making frequent visits to the Russell Group Universities to participate in a wide range of Masterclasses. The Arts are woven into the very “fabric of the building” at Hatch End High School and brought alive in the main curriculum areas as well as our extensive enrichment provision. The Music Department offers an array of opportunities - from individual

instrumental lessons to bands, choirs and many, many public concerts. Learning outdoors is essential to develop resilience, and we offer many visits to centres like PGL and HOAC. The challenges and experiences students face are invaluable markers for future life — building self-confidence, a spirit of adventure and teamwork. The Duke of Edinburgh programme is an international award in which many of our students across the year groups participate to achieve their Bronze, Silver and even Gold awards. An exciting variety of trips, both locally and internationally, take place throughout the whole year, from the Battlefields in France and Belgium to the Art Galleries of New York and, of course, our wonderful free museums in London.

“No education can be complete; indeed no programme of education can even begin, without making the arts and creativity central to a child’s life.” - DFE For more information on the enrichment offer at Hatch End High School, please visit our school website here: http://www.hatchend.harrow.sch. uk/1628/enrichment-overview

WE’RE BACK!!! – HEHS RADIO IS LIVE ONCE AGAIN We value the importance of a varied learning experience. This term has seen the relaunch of the Radio at HEHS again. Each day the show is presented by a group of students from across the years, working as a team, to write, produce and present a show. The shows are educational and discuss subjects, various topical issues, and may also include interviews and quizzes. We broadcast to all the common rooms, and also the Dining Halls, so everyone can listen in somewhere. We have had an interview with a Year 7 student and our new English teacher

12

Miss Rugeana, described how much she was enjoying her first term at Hatch End High School. Mr Firth excelled himself on a demanding memory quiz, and a variety of music has been enjoyed by all.

“I like Astronomy because it is very interesting and helps us in certain subjects. One of the reasons I like Astronomy is I want to be an Engineer, designing Space Shuttles and even more. It is also one of my favourite subjects because I love looking at different planets. We do not just do the Solar System; we look at the Universe and everything we know. Hatch End should teach Astronomy because it is helpful to Maths and Physics and opens more doors for the future.” Jacob Richards, Year 8 student.

WHY OUR ASTRONOMY CLUB IS HITTING THE STRATOSPHERE... We value continual learning about new phenomena. Not only do we exist at a crucial time for the necessity of space exploration, but astronomy is essential to our understanding of the universe. It also links into essential core subjects such as Maths, Physics and Chemistry. It improves critical thinking and requires imagination. Here, at the HEHS Astronomy Club, students not only discover extraordinary facts but also develop in other areas of theoretical and practical thinking to prepare them for careers in the astronomical field. It is also incredibly exciting; you do not have to be a theorist or Science expert to enjoy it! You can be dazzled by mind-blowing facts and figures! It is run weekly with two teachers, Ms Power, who develops students understanding of theoretical ideas of the universe and Mr Beshir, who develops these further by investigating the chemical and mathematical nature of the cosmos. We cover everything from Black Holes to String theory, methane on Titan to Dark Matter and Dark Energy, the different sizes of Stars and Exo planets.

BUILDING RESILIENCE DUKE OF EDINBURGH We value independence and resilience. Just before the half-term break, our new participants in our long established Duke of Edinburgh’s award programme practised their map reading and compass skills at Bentley Priory Nature Reserve. Students were asked to come “prepared” but left to their own initiative as to deciding what “prepared” meant. It was impressive how many came ready for anything – changes in weather, difficult terrain, carrying first aid packs, water bottles and so on. There were, however, some rather interesting choices of footwear and those students learnt the hard way as they trudged through muddy fields while trying to find their checkpoints. A valuable learning experience! All in all, it was a hugely engaging and successful day that began to prepare our new Duke of Edinburgh participants for their qualifying expeditions next year. Our successful D of E team is now also complemented by Ms D Patel our new Head of English who led expeditions in her previous school Bentley Wood. Well done to all involved – very proud.

Club members are also encouraged to develop their own Powerpoints and suggest topics for discussion and are encouraged to continue their investigation into chosen areas. “I am really passionate about space and astronomy itself since it has been my childhood dream to do something with space. Now that I am part of the Astronomy Club, I can finally express my feelings and knowledge about space. However, the thing that makes me the happiest is the encouragement to work at NASA – which is my dream job. Thanks to Ms Power and Mr Beshir, who have also improved my knowledge on subjects like Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as making sure to keep my determination up to live up to my dream.” Greta Sirvinskaite, Year 10 student.

PHILANTHROPY AT HATCH END HIGH SCHOOL We value helping others and have an acute sense of serving the community whether local, national or international. Just a tiny number of examples this year so far are below: MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. Macmillan ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day all go to this very worthy cause which has touched so many of us in different ways. On Friday, 30th September, Hatch End High School held a Macmillan Coffee Morning for staff and students. It was a great success and we would like to thank all those that came to support this cause. Thank you to all staff who were involved in the preparation as well as on the day. THANKS TO YOUR SUPPORT WE RAISED OVER £500 FOR MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT.

ST LUKE’S HOSPICE - HARROW This year the school has chosen to support St Luke’s Hospice as its main charity to pay tribute to one of our outstanding and caring school Governors, Karen Tighe, who sadly passed away in summer 2017 having been cared for with kindness and the exceptional support by their staff earlier this year. The local Harrow and Brent organisation provides care for all with incurable conditions to make the remaining time they have as enjoyable, dignfied and pain-free as possible. The GO PURPLE day on Friday, 6th October meant that students in Years 7 and 8 could wear the colour purple for a minimum donation of 20p. Across the years there were purple shirts, t-shirts, ties, sweat shirts, trousers, socks, bags, headscarves, ribbons, coats, badges and pins, hats, painted nails, and even sprayed hair! Omar Aly in 8TCl was most generous, donating £20 alone for his very professionally sprayed purple hair. In addition to the theme, following an article in the local paper spotted by Mr Williams’ mum (who lives locally), the children were made aware of the story of the St Luke’s Charity shop in Harrow which had been burgled the week before

14

and had much of its stock stolen along with the shop’s stereo system. In assemblies, Mr Williams and Ms Dunford made an appeal and we set our sights on not only providing a nurse for a whole day and paying for a client to attend a day centre at a cost of £80, but also replacing the stereo system which was donated by our own Miss Jones, providing music to their ears. On the day there was a significant splash of purple across the school, students were proud to be supporting a great charity and many of our older students, when they asked ‘why purple?’ were touched by the collective responses. This is an inspiring example of how Hatch End students can take something bad in society and turn it into a power for good! I am delighted that, thanks to the staff and students linked to the lower school, we were able to raise a significant amount of money which will grow over the year with additional fund raising events. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD We all know that Christmas, whilst joyful for many, can be a tough and sometimes very sad time for others. Some of our Sixth Formers decided to organise and coordinate a Christmas Charity donation activity for children around the world. Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan’s Purse) involves filling a Christmas wrapped shoebox with small gifts for a less fortunate child around the world, with a personal message inside and taken to a local drop-off point. A big thank you to all those involved from Year 7 to Sixth Form, who were really excited and enthusiastic to make someone’s Christmas really special this year.

DIANA AWARD WINNER SARAH MARSH We value our young people. Congratulations to Sarah Marsh in Year 9 for her successful nomination and deserved win of The Diana Award 2017 with INSPIRE London. The school says: Sarah is sensible, supportive, creative and industrious in her efforts to make a difference in others’ lives. She dedicates her time to her academic studies and the support of young people who may be experiencing any personal difficulties in their lives. She helps plan and run events in school to raise awareness of issues facing her peers and the wider community. Sarah has been instrumental in initiating the relaunch of her schools peer2peer support programme and organised a rota for the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors. Sarah regularly holds discussion groups to discuss creative ideas that raise awareness of Anti-Bullying in society, and raises money for a number of charities locally and abroad. Well done Sarah for living and breathing daily our famous WE CARE ethos!

“ It was a great opportunity to meet other inspiring young people and to get recognition for my work.“

JACK PETCHEY AWARD WINNERS - AUTUMN TERM 2017 The Jack Petchey Achievement Award is a famous scheme to recognise initiative in young people and to celebrate their achievements. It is a national award and students attend a formal ceremony at which awards are presented by the Mayor of Harrow each year. The Headteacher and Deputy Headteachers attend to join in the celebration of their outstanding contribution to school life.

Cuba Mitchell-Hillborn, who previously attended Roxeth First and Middle School, has made a phenomenal start at Hatch End High School and is keen and enthusiastic. She is always willing to help and get involved in extracurricular activities. Cuba is excelling in her subjects and always attempts ‘the challenge’ questions to further her understanding. She has already managed to accumulate a large number of excellence tokens for this stage in the term. Well done, Cuba.

Anup Adhikari, who previously attended Belmont Middle School, is always kind and friendly to staff and other students. He always tries his best and works hard. He takes part in every possible activity and opportunities within tutor time and has put himself forward to work in the HEHS Radio Station. We as a tutor team are all very impressed with his effort, aspiration and enthusiasm a real example of our ethos WE CARE in action!

ADMISSIONS FOR HATCH END HIGH SCHOOL Year 7 and Year 12 Deciding on a secondary school for your child can be daunting. The educational agenda has changed substantially over the last few years with parents being ever bombarded with new statistics and performance measures. However, in many other ways, the choice is what it has always been, with parents simply wanting the best for their child. Hatch End High School is a high performing, happy and thriving comprehensive school in the London Borough of Harrow. The school has a rich history of tradition but actively embraces the very best of new technologies and innovative practice. We have a high profile in the community supporting other schools and play a lead role in training the next generation of teachers. We recognise that both parents and students need the best advice and support, not only in the application process but also from March when they are allocated their place. See pages 3 & 4 for our outstanding transitional arrangements for Year 6 - 7 families considering their high school applications for 2019. I urge you to look at our welcome video on our comprehensive website and please do not hesitate to contact us for a personal visit / tour of the school. Many students from other schools choose to join us in our Sixth Form. We welcome them warmly and have a fantastic Induction Programme to enable them to meet their peers and embrace the culture and ethos of the school. We are especially proud of how quickly these students become successful, prominent and happy members of our school. If you go to a Harrow school, your home school should provide you with a Harrow Collegiate application form and you need to mark Hatch End High School as your first choice of institution if you want to study with us. The Harrow Collegiate application form needs to be submitted to your home school by the first Friday in February and your application will then be passed to us and considered against our entry criteria. Students may be asked to attend guidance meetings where aspirations are discussed and subjects choices are negotiated according to individual preferences and school availability.

Students may be asked to attend guidance meetings where aspirations are discussed and subjects choices are negotiated according to individual preferences and school availability. Finally, whilst our academic performance at GCSE and A Level consistently puts us in the top performing schools category year after year, we are not just an exam factory. Our outstanding pastoral care and extensive enrichment programme underpins our academic success and is just as important for our students’ social and emotional well-being.
