Dear Friends We had a very busy Sunday last week, and even more than usual there was something for everyone, with the launch of this year’s ‘Wave’ on Lion Green, the Feast of St Mary Magdalene celebrated with quiet reflection at the 8am communion and with wonderful singing at Evensong, and Songs of Praise at 11am with no less than ten hymns, followed by the parish picnic which was positively idyllic as we ate quiche, barbecue and a fantastic range of puddings under shady gazebos in St Christopher’s garden. Many thanks to everyone who put their time, effort and ingenuity into these varied celebrations.

As I planned the Songs of Praise service I especially enjoyed finding out which hymns people had chosen and learning why these particular ones were important to their faith and lives. I tried to give a flavour of this during the service, and in the past we have invited people to say something themselves about their chosen hymns. Despite having decided not to do this in the interests of having as many hymns as possible, I do think we need more opportunities for people to share something about their faith with the congregation. This is something that we have been thinking about in the context of our vision – Together in Christ, Growing in Faith, Serving in Love – and many of us don’t find it an easy thing to do.

We may be afraid of being rebuffed or laughed at. Or, being English, and Surrey English at that, we may feel that our faith is a private thing and not want to expose it and ourselves to other people. These may be legitimate fears, but you might be exactly the person who is meant to share this good news with your friend, or neighbour, or the person you meet in the supermarket, and if you don’t take the chance when it offers, well then, they may never hear it…. Perhaps we all need more help in learning how to talk about God simply and unselfconsciously, without embarrassing ourselves or others. There are some good short courses that can help with this, so do let me know if you might be interested.

I’ve just been over to Lion Green to join in the prayer session that starts each day during Wave week. It was a remarkable gathering of about 40 people, most of them in Wave t-shirts, aged from 13 to …. well, I don’t 3

know, it would be rude to speculate! We prayed in silence and shared prayers for each other and for the different activities of the day, including gardening, painting, the café and toddler sessions, the holiday club and the silent disco in the evening. We also talked about our favourite stories of Jesus, and I was reminded of what I’d just written as I listened to different peoples’ experience of God in their lives. One of my favourite stories is about Jesus inviting two of the very first disciples to ‘come and see’ – he doesn’t tell them who he is, or what to believe or how to act, he lets them watch, follow, and find out for themselves. But someone – in fact it was John the Baptist - had told them to seek Jesus in the first place, or they wouldn’t have been there to come and see….

On a different note, you may remember that the PCC has been thinking for some time about plans to reorder the prayer chapel and provide a home for the Flemish stained glass that was removed from the chapel and the ringing chamber. Those plans are on the backburner for now but, in the meantime, we would like to do some minor works to make the chapel less gloomy and more welcoming as a space for our regular Morning Prayer, for one to one conversations, for private prayer and for small meetings or courses like the ones I mentioned above. This will involve improving the lighting, which wasn’t included when the rest of the church was done, and providing comfortable chairs and a new carpet. To make enough space, we will be applying to the diocese for a faculty (ecclesiastical planning permission) to remove the rear pews from the north aisle. Watch out for more details of this project, and a request for your help.

As the summer holidays begin in earnest, and the hot weather continues, I hope we can all find time to relax and recharge our batteries ready for a busy autumn. Sadly, I’m no longer spending time by the sea in Selsey, having sold my cottage there in preparation for my retirement next year, but I’m looking forward to rediscovering the Haslemere countryside on my remaining days off, and the cats certainly won’t mind not being carted up and down the A286! Anyway, whatever you have planned for the next month or so, my prayer is that we will all feel the warmth of God’s love as well as the warmth of the sun. And here is a thought from Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, which offers us a whole new perspective on sun and the love of God.

‘When you're lying on the beach something is happening, something that has nothing to do with how you feel or how hard you're trying. You're not going to get a better tan by screwing up your eyes and concentrating. You give the time, and that's it. All you have to do is turn up. And then things change, at their own pace. You simply have to be there where the light can get at you.’ May we all find that place of light this summer.

First Steps Picnic Frankie Gaiter First Steps celebrated its end of term with a picnic in St. Christopher's garden on Monday July 16th. The weather was perfect, not too hot but beautiful and sunny. After their usual singing and playing of instruments everyone went out into the garden for a very early lunch of sandwiches, sausages, crisps, cake and jelly and ice-cream. The children certainly have hearty appetites! After eating and playing (and climbing the little mountain in the garden), Revd.

Mary presented books to the little ones leaving for 'big' school or nursery.

Thank you to all who helped make this a very special occasion.

First Steps begins again on Monday September 24th, a delayed start owing to helpers' holidays. A last chance to see the Flower Festival at the church will be on the morning of Monday September 17th, when parents, grandparents and other carers and their children are invited to visit St. Christopher's to admire the displays before they are dismantled in the afternoon.

‘Songs of Praise’ Parish Picnic St Christopher’s, July 22, 2018 ‘If we knew the weather could be relied on to be like this we could have a Parish Picnic more often!’ commented one of the picnickers.

Our amazing summer did, indeed, provide the perfect day for a picnic and St Christopher’s the perfect setting. A very efficient team had set up gazebos, tables and chairs for all.

Earlier, the congregations of St Bart’s and St Christopher’s had gathered for a ‘Songs of Praise’ service.

Church members had submitted hymn requests in advance, with some giving reasons for their choice, and Mary then had the difficult task of picking out ten of them, giving the service shape and meaning. A poem by John Betjeman, ‘Sunday Morning, King’s Cambridge’ was also read.

As always happens in a ‘bring and share’ event, a splendid selection of dishes provided an excellent meal.

A warm ‘thank you’ to all who worked so hard to make it such a splendid occasion.

Rectors’ Walk Chiddingfold to Haslemere 17th June 2018 Revd. Sarah Brough is leaving the parish of Chiddingfold this July, after 15 years incumbency.

She expressed the wish to walk the traditional country route to St Bartholomew’s, Haslemere, once before she left. We were the daughter church, before becoming a parish in 1871. Her predecessors in centuries past used to make this journey regularly, perhaps on horseback as well as walking.

She soon gathered an enthusiastic group of her parishioners who wanted to walk with her and invited us to join in too. Six of us, Rev. Mary Bowden, Catriona Tremlett, Sarah Mulliner (with Poppy), Robert Fox, Chris Lemar and I, took up the offer to do the approximately five-mile walk. This brought the total to 40 men, women, children and several dogs.

It was a fine, if not sunny, Sunday afternoon, ideal for walking. We were led with military efficiency and good humour by Tony Ward, who had previously recce’d the route. It was fascinating to see the varied countryside, woodland and farmland which lie between the roads we normally speed along. Such a lovely opportunity for talking as well!

After passing through Swan Barn NT land, we emerged into the High Street, much to the amazement of one of the youngest walkers. He then said ‘I can’t believe I have actually walked from Chiddingfold to Haslemere. ‘ The reward for him and the rest of us was an excellent tea in the Link prepared

by Margaret Morris and her team. Much as we needed that, we first went into church for a short service of prayer and praise, reading Psalm 104, in praise of the Creator who has given us our beautiful countryside.

Many of you will remember that this is not a new idea. The walk has been done in both directions at various times in living memory. We have photographs of the 1976 walk and then again in the late 1990’s, at Harvest time.

Both Rectors are keen that we repeat the walk next year, although both will have moved on. So, do remind the churchwardens!

We wish Sarah Brough all the very best for her move with her family to Ockley and thank her for reviving this old tradition.

Fizz, Food and Flowers At the end of June we had a wonderful gathering for lunch in the most beautiful garden.

The sun shone, the food was delicious, the fizz fizzed, and the flowers were absolutely the icing on the cake (or the meringues!).

Over 40 very generous people came to a garden lunch in aid of the Flower Festival, ‘Haslemere Remembers’, (to be held at St. Christopher’s Church from the 14th – 16th September 2018).

The bunting fluttered as we all arrived, and then we were served ice cold sparkling wine, before being ushered into a cold buffet of delicious food which we then enjoyed, surrounded by fun company and friends. On top of this, there was a very well-stocked plant sale which also helped to swell the funds raised.

After lunch Ruth Pattenden gave a very informative, step by step demonstration of how to do a beautiful floral table decoration; her creation was then the first prize in the raffle!

A memorable occasion - and so many thanks to Ruth Pattenden displays her table decoration Lynn and Chris Lemar for hosting and helping with the lunch in their lovely garden. Also, thanks to all the Flower Team (and husbands) who cooked, moved stuff, washed up, served and everything else that went into making this a very special day.

Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we raised over £830 for the Flower Festival, which is a huge boost to making the Festival very special.

‘Haslemere Remembers’

A festival of flowers to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. St Christopher's Church, Haslemere 15th - 16th September 2018 10.00am - 5.30pm Choral Evensong 6.00pm Sunday 16th September 2018 To reflect the poppy cascade on the outside of St Christopher's Church, community groups from all over the Haslemere area are creating floral tributes and installations inspired by World War I poems and songs.

Installations include a re-creation of our version of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a giant poppy wreath hanging over the nave.

Over 20 floral arrangements will decorate the church.

From the Front A doctor now with the R.A.M.C. writes: 'We speak of brave men. Yes, these men are brave! If the people of the United Kingdom could see the conditions under which our fellows fight, how they fight and how they die!

They suffer their wounds, great and small, without a murmur; they get their wounds dressed, take chloroform, give consent to having their limbs amputated just as if they were going to have their hair cut. They are gloriously brave. Men who have been in the thick of the fight all day, seen their chums wounded and killed, their own lives not worth a second's insurance, still these men cook their food and go off to sleep and, most wonderful of all, go back to the thick of it next day!

It is Sunday, and we have had Holy Communion administered in a cow-shed, and very impressive it was, under the circumstances. In the evening we had another service in a barn, conducted by the Chaplain and a Weslyan minister. A great crowd of officers and men collected. The scene was very impressive, with the room lit only by camp candles, the soldiers rough and dirty with the work of war, some of them returned from the trenches and others going there the same night - some of who, in all probability, would be dead before another night came along.

The men sang heartily, but when the prayer for dear ones at home was being offered there were very few dry eyes among those brave men who faced death daily.'

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes My ‘time-out’ this year was spent at a retreat house in Essex. It stands in the charming village of Pleshey. Imagine the village street – the church at one end, the inn at the other; and in between cottages – whether thatched or tiled, beautifully kept. And quiet! Every day like an old-fashioned Sunday.

Although I love hills, I find a profound sense of peace in the flatness of rural Essex. Staying once in the Roding Valley, I remember a vast cornfield with very little on the horizon to impede the view of a glorious sunset. An uncluttered landscape teaches me about simplicity as a principle in daily life.

Less is more!

At the retreat house, our Chaplain’s theme was ‘Trees’. Each day we meditated on what they have to show us – about ourselves, and about our relationship with God. We focused on trunk, branch and foliage, and found spiritual parallels. But so much of the tree is below the surface. We were shown a picture of a tree’s roots – a massive network reaching down in search of sustenance. Coincidentally, on the previous Sunday, ‘Countryfile’ had demonstrated an instrument (like a stethoscope) whereby a tree’s intake of water can be measured. We heard what the presenter could hear – the tree slurping and positively gurgling!

Trees know instinctively that they must put down roots to survive. We need to be reminded that there is a supply of Christ’s ‘living water’ to tap into.

Some people exemplify deep-rootedness. We guess they spend much time in prayer and contemplation. Perhaps the sense of being loved also comes into it. Years ago, I enjoyed the ministry of a Welsh evangelist, who put his message across in song as well as in words. The first two lines of one such song have stayed with me: ‘Dwell deep in the love of the Saviour. Dwell deep in the love of the Lord.’ Our Chaplain at Pleshey told us: ‘Let God love you.’ I shall remember those words for a long time, too.

A Glimpse into the Life of…

Elizabeth Boniface Elizabeth was one of the very first babies born in the new Haslemere Hospital just over 90 years ago - and before the building of the maternity hospital in St. George’s Wood. On their marriage, 104 years ago, her parents built their house on Old Haslemere Road, near the recreation ground, for £500. What could be built nowadays for such a sum?

Elizabeth was baptised in St. Bartholomew’s Church but, as a child, attended the Sunday afternoon children’s services at St. Christopher’s. She clearly remembers the Revd. Kit Tanner taking these services, as well as visits with him to a local café for tea and cakes. “I was in love with him” she told me, “All the girls were!”

She was 12 years old at the time. (As many of you know he died during the battle for Crete and was posthumously awarded the Albert Medal for saving the lives of over 30 men when their ship HMS Fiji was torpedoed.)

Elizabeth’s father died when she was four, and her mother was left to bring up the four children alone, so they let their house and moved into the telephone exchange in West Street, where her mother worked as a telephonist.

The war over, the family returned to their own house. Elizabeth and her sister, Joy, (who was 10 years older) both attended Guildford High School and, on leaving school, she followed Joy to train as a children’s nurse in Tunbridge Wells.

She first worked in a state nursery, but most of her professional life was spent working as a ‘live in’ Nanny for wealthy families, including, for a period, in French-speaking Africa. She wore her distinctive pink uniform and loved her work. She says she was always treated well (although paid about £3 per week, rising to about £7 after some years). Among her many charges were three sets of twins, some of whom are still in contact with her. But she had very definite views on the upbringing of ‘her’ children, preferring to take charge of them from 16

about four weeks old, in order to instil in them the ‘right’ sort of behaviour. She was always called ’Nurse’ or sometimes ’Nursie’.

She worked until her retirement at the end of the 80s, and during recent years has occupied herself making over sixty beautiful kneelers for St. Bart’s, two of which depict St. Christopher’s, its daughter church. Those made for St. C.’s are dedicated to Revd. Kit Tanner whom she remembers fondly.

Now in her 90s, Elizabeth has recently moved to Moorlands Lodge in Hindhead, where she is very happy; her only regret is having had to give away her cat Gobbolino (the witch’s cat), but he’s in the very good hands of her neighbour Ken and his wife.

I cannot finish without mentioning her beautiful name: Boniface. Its meaning is ‘good fate’, from the Latin, and is the name of nine popes and several saints.

One, an 8th century Anglo-Saxon missionary, travelled to Germany and became their patron saint. The name came into use in England in the Middle Ages but has become rare here after the Protestant Reformation.

The Conservative Christian Fellowship The area of London around Westminster holds many happy memories for me as I trained as State Registered Nurse at Westminster Hospital during the late 60’s and early 70’s.

It was in 1969 that 18-year olds were permitted to vote, and I took a keen interest in politics and in health and education policies.

I was introduced to the Conservative Christian Fellowship a few years ago. They try to build relationships between the Christian world and the world of politics.

They are a nondenominational Christian Fellowship that inspires and equips believers to go into public life and to be salt and light in British Politics. They are very diverse, coming from different backgrounds and denominations.

CCF runs a monthly prayer service and briefing in the heart of Westminster to pray for Christian decision makers and charities. Everyone is welcome to attend, and the services are held in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster. It was one of the few structures in the Palace of Westminster to survive the great fire of 1834, although much of the stonework was harmed. It has a most interesting history but due to some recent cracks in the stonework it is no longer open to visitors, just to those attending services.

The services usually have Members of Parliament leading the prayers, but they often leave to cast their vote depending on the agendas of the day. Worship is led by different worship groups from London churches. Numbers attending range from about 15 or so to over 100 depending on the Charity represented or the theme of the evening.

I try to attend as often as possible and when time permits one can go and sit in the Strangers Gallery in the House of Lords or go up to the House of Commons and listen to the debates of the day or just enjoy the rich and varied history in the Palace of Westminster. It can take up to half an hour to get through security, but it is worth it.

In My Garden Philip Duly The famous horticulturalist Margery Fish, when asked for the secret of successful gardening, said 'The secret is, when in doubt, plant a geranium!'. Our warm and sunny May and June extended this year's flowering of hardy geraniums by several weeks, not to mention the roses, peonies and lupins. Indeed, several of my summer favourites - the dark blue ‘Black Knight’ and wonderful sky-blue ‘Centurion’ delphiniums - flowered two weeks earlier than usual and then had an extended flourish for a full six weeks. I also have several varieties of phlox that habitually flower from mid-July and were in their usual stunning form from the last week of June.

This month's star plant is a perfect contrast, with the pinks, purples and blues of the Hemerocallis (commonly known as the day lily), an erect perennial, growing to a maximum of four feet, which flowers consistently for a full month and is a pretty sight against its green spiky foliage. I have two, each purchased a few years back for 50p from a charity shop behind the High Street - probably the best pound I have spent on my garden. One is the delightful orange Hemerocallis fulva but my star plant and favourite is the lemon-yellow Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus, which is a perfect complement to its current companion in my garden, the abundant purple flowering Geranium sanguineum Max Frei. I think Ms. Fish would approve.

HASLEMERE The photo in my article in the last issue showed the royal crown surmounting the weather vane on Haslemere town hall (no-one apparently recognised it, or if they did, they thought everyone else had too).

It serves as a reminder of earlier times when the feudal system of justice, the Court Leet, sat in the upper chamber of the newly-built Market Hall which was completed in 1814. It replaced a much older timber building, the market ‘shambles’ farther down the High Street, probably just beyond where The Swan is now.

Initially the 1814 market hall had an open ground floor with access to the upper floor by means of an iron spiral staircase in the SW corner. There was a rudimentary lock-up on the ground floor at the NE corner for local petty miscreants.

When we were driving through Cambridgeshire last year, Diana and I were interested to see the old medieval town centre of Peterborough. I admit to not knowing a lot about Peterborough. I had thought simply, “a new town”, albeit with Saxon roots, but when I saw their medieval Guildhall, dated 1671, in the old market-place, I was struck by its similarity with the original drawings of our Haslemere market hall of 1814.

‘Our’ town hall was much changed by modernisation of the building in 1870 when the ground floor space was enclosed to create a school room. At the same time the original iron spiral staircase was replaced, and it was interesting to see that the Peterborough one - still in use - is in the same position, the SW corner!

The rather grand plasterwork under-eaves coving in Peterborough is very similar to ours here in Haslemere and our own ornate iron-work is quite sophisticated for what was at the time little more than a rural backwater. Even the celebrated architectural critic, Nikolaus Pevsner, comments favourably on the purity of design. I wondered how it came about that our local Haslemere architect could have been influenced by the design of the Peterborough Guildhall – or another like it. Perhaps the connection was that Mr James Stewart Hodgson of Lythe Hill, the educated and widely travelled philanthropic benefactor who paid for the alterations carried out in 1870, may have had the Peterborough Guildhall in mind.

First query: Does any reader know more of any possible connection?

Second query: Oriel windows (not to be confused with bay windows which became popular in the 1930s) are quite rare here in Haslemere. I would be interested to know if there are others locally with more intricate designs.

There is an elegant, very small oriel window in the High St estate agents Clarke Gammon Wellers - but I am in danger of including too many photos!

Fairly similar is this Petworth Road shop front with oriel window above left. Note also the two small windows cleverly inserted in the massive chimney structure on the top floor.

The Bakers Oven shop front has changed slightly, but the 1st floor elevation is more or less as it was built somewhat later, in 1910.

Parish Praying The Bible is full of encouragement for praying together and bringing our prayer requests to God. When we share the joy of prayer, we increase our joy in prayer. It helps cultivate unity in the church and increases our faith.

Here in the Parish, on the second Monday of the month, we meet in The Link between 8.00 and 9.00pm to pray for the Parish, the community and for national and global issues.

We open with a bible-reading and discuss prayer needs – for example, this month we were praying for the coming services, our vision and mission and for the housebound and the sick. For the community, we were praying for all end-of-school activities, the water situation and deanery and ecumenical matters. Our focus of prayer for national and global issues was for our government and the situation with Brexit and for peace in the Middle East and in the world, amongst many other issues.

We should be delighted if more of the congregation could join us for this hour and, if not possible to be physically with us, then to join in the hour at home or wherever you are. It is a very special time.

17th Century Nun’s Prayer LORD, Thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody: helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.

Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains.

They are increasing, and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others’ pains, but help me to endure them with patience.

I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a less cocksureness when my memory seem to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a Saint – some of them are so hard to live with – but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places, and talents in unexpected people.

And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so.

Crab and Jersey Royal Potato Salad

By Linda Donaldson I am hoping that Jersey Royal potatoes may still be in season when you read this, but otherwise little new potatoes will do just as well.

Serves 4-6 800g. Jersey Royal potatoes Half a bunch of fresh mint 1 red onion 200g. pitted black olives 2 oranges, segmented, plus the zest Rock salt and cracked black pepper 100g. green beans 1 punnet of quails' eggs (available in Waitrose) 200g. white crabmeat 50ml. red wine vinegar Olive oil Scrub the potatoes, if necessary. Pick and finely chop the mint, reserving the stalks. Peel and thinly slice the onion. Slice the black olives into rings. I mix the orange segments with the zest.

Cook the potatoes and mint stalks in a saucepan of boiling water for about 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Drain and leave to cool in a colander.

Cook the beans in another pan of salted water for 2 minutes and then refresh in iced water. In the same pan, cook the quails' eggs for 2 minutes (although the eggs you buy in Waitrose are already cooked. Halve the eggs.

Cut the beans and potatoes into bite-sized pieces and transfer to a serving bowl or plates.

Add the rest of the ingredients, apart from the vinegar and oil.

Whisk together the vinegar and oil to make a quick dressing. Drizzle over the salad and season with salt and pepper.

Give everything a toss and serve.
