Dear Friends There can be fewer pleasures in life than being the bearer of good news. Have you ever had the experience of holding a gift or a story which you know is going to bring unbridled joy? I’ve had a few of those, and I’ve been on the receiving end a few times too. We have our national experiences of such times too, which may bring to mind some sporting events or royal weddings (if you like that sort of thing). The moment which sticks in my mind is the scene when London was awarded the Olympic Games back in 2005, and everyone jumped for joy. The prophet Isaiah feels the same: ‘How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”’

If you are reading this article in October, it may seem a little premature to be reviewing the whole year, but 2021 will forever be the year of contrasting memories. For three months, back at the very beginning of the year, the daily evening news and live press briefings from Westminster were a regular exercise in misery. I hardly need to remind you as we are still working through the experience of it all. When will this end, we asked ourselves? In our minds is a balance point where we want to foresee the joy of a better moment. Yet, for each bad moment we imagine a better one in hope.

Is it any surprise that when the better times come along, we want to embrace them with all the enthusiasm of a starving person presented with a feast? For this reason, it carried no surprise when the beginnings of normality we started to feel in late July were taken up so enthusiastically by the nation. It seemed obvious to me that they would be, but at the same time I was worried for the many for whom this return would be yet another point of fear. When the time came for us to meet after services for refreshments, reopen St Christopher’s, begin singing and remove masks, each of these were embraced with obvious 3

joy. Just last week I was so pleased to get back into the school for a routine assembly. Today (it’s Monday 13th September as I write), First Steps will have its first time back in the church since March 2020 - the children will come running in with big smiles .

However, I cannot help but carry a guilty feeling for those who are suffering still.

I’ve found it easy in these last months to ignore the daily figures - still thousands of infections and deaths, sometimes again into the hundreds. For months on end this year I knew the sad totals every day. They were exact figures I could quote in conversation at any point. By the middle of the year my biggest concern was that the restrictions would stay in place but be increasingly ignored by large sections of the general public. Isn’t that what actually started to happen? The unity of this country, with the vaccine programme, is what has got us through. To have lost our confidence in those would have been a disaster beyond all measure, because there never really was a plan B. It had to work.

On my mind right now are the big events of the Autumn and Winter calendar: Harvest Festival, Remembrance and Christmas. These will all be very popular and well-attended. The reason is simple - because we can. There will be joy and relief for what we could not have last year. It has to be that way. Yet Jesus would exhort us to stop and think this through - not to forget the pain so many have felt and those who still feel it now.

It's OK to celebrate all together, but please remember the few who cannot.

Majorities have their weaknesses; let us not forget those who remain very worried by it all. As Christians we are a minority too. It should be natural for us to hold compassion and care alongside joy and celebration. Both are possible and both are going to be needed for a long time yet.

Families@4 Families@4 is a family service which runs on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Over the past year we have been holding Families@4 but within the restrictions, either in the Link with families at their own individual tables or on Zoom! As restrictions lifted we were able to hold a Families@4 Picnic on Sunday 25th July in St Christopher’s Church! This was a special afternoon when we could all be properly back together again. There was a real party feel with a bouncy castle, fun crafts, games, toys and a wonderful party tea to which all the families contributed. A big thank you to all involved in making this afternoon a success!

Rev Chris and I were so pleased, on Sunday 12th September, to move back into St Bartholomew’s Church for this popular service. We kicked off the new term with, ‘David and Goliath’ - the children painted pebbles, which could then be used as prayer stones, and Rev Chris gave a very convincing performance as Goliath! After the service, we all moved to the Link, for a sharing party tea and to enjoy fellowship together.

Through the Compassion charity, Families@4 sponsor a little boy called Nelson who lives in Nicaragua. Nelson is now six years old. The children make cards and write messages to Nelson, which are sent through Compassion 3-4 times a year, and we receive lovely letters back from Nelson as well as updates about Compassion work in Nicaragua.

Parish Picnic Sunday, August 22nd at St Christopher’s “I knew this would happen” said Rector Chris with a rue smile on the day. Having made a last minute decision to move the venue from the Rectory garden to St Christopher’s due to a dubious weather forecast, it turned out to be a beautiful day, with not a drop of rain to cast a shadow over the proceedings!

The general consensus was that it was for the best in that it would save Chris and Sophie a lot of hard work, besides the fact that St Christopher’s is an excellent and hospitable venue, with a highly professional team to run such events.

What made it extra special was that it was the first opportunity many of us had had to meet up with others since the Covid restrictions had been relaxed. I’m sure I speak for everyone there when I say how grateful we are to all those who worked so hard to make it such a tremendous success.

Bishop Andrew, Diocesan Bishop for the Diocese of Guildford explains why we are doing this: “It is important we do everything we can to make our churches the safest places they can be. Safe means different things to different people but this review will help us to ensure that the concerns reported to our churches have been dealt with properly, and the care taken and the support given is of the high quality that people rightly deserve. We have learnt from a previous review that that survivors and victims’ voices are critical, and I would urge you to come forward.”

The Sunflower Cloudy, rainy, chilly days in the middle of our British summer do not warm the heart. Recently, on such a gloomy day, Killy and I were given some sunflowers. We immediately smiled, our spirits lifted, and since then I’ve been thinking a lot about sunflowers.

Now don’t mock pondering plants! In 1 Kings 4:33 we read that King Solomon ‘spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls’ (NIV). (Incidentally, he couldn’t have spoken about sunflowers because they originated in South America and were only brought to Europe in the sixteenth century.) Jesus himself took the garden mustard plant and created a parable (Matthew 13:31-32) and in Luke 12:27 Jesus said, “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these” (NIV).

But sunflowers are especially appealing, and it didn’t take me long to think of four aspects of them that spoke to me.

First, sunflowers are cheerful. There’s something about that disc of brilliant primary colour yellow that lifts the spirits. Possibly it’s because sunflowers look like the sun - or at least every child’s drawing of the sun - and I suspect quite a few of us need sunlight to lift our spirits (certainly anybody with a Greek ancestry like me!). Indeed, I can quite understand why the depressive artist Vincent van Gogh was drawn to painting them. Of course, it’s not always easy being cheerful but we can choose to be cheerful, happy and optimistic instead of grumpy, gloomy, miserable and pessimistic. And I know which people I would rather spend time with: those who lift me up not those who bring me down.

Let us be sunflowers, not weeping willows!

Second, sunflowers are conspicuous. It’s not just the colour of sunflowers that makes them so striking; it’s the fact that they can easily be tall enough to tower 10

over you. Most flowers you look down on; sunflowers you look up to. In fact if you grow sunflowers (as Killy and I are trying to do), you may end up not simply blessing your own garden but your neighbours’ too. I think there’s another lesson here: it’s all too easy to stay concealed. We may not reach the height that some sunflowers do but, short or tall, it’s important that we let our light shine. Remember: even short people can stand tall. Let’s learn from the sunflower to stand up and let what we stand for be seen.

Third, sunflowers are considerate. You may think of sunflowers as an ornament for a garden but, of course, they are a major crop plant. Sunflowers provide seeds for food and vitamins, oil for cooking, and I’m told you can even make insulation out of those enormous stalks. In thinking about the use of sunflowers, let’s remember it’s not only humans who benefit from them but birds and insects too. Sunflowers are not just bold and big; they are also a blessing. Let us be a blessing to others as well.

Finally, sunflowers centre on the sun. They have the remarkable ability - absent from most other plants - of being able to move. Their flowers and upper leaves track the sun, and when the sun sets in the evening they rotate their heads back to face the east to await the warmth of the morning sun’s rays. It’s clever stuff!

Sunflowers soak up all of the sun’s rays for warmth and light. They depend on the sun to make their food so they can keep growing. But what about those cloudy days? Get this: sunflowers will turn and face another sunflower! Looking to each other for support until they can once again see the sun.

There’s a lesson here for us. We should be those who, at the start of the day, are found facing towards God the Son - Jesus - and who, during the course of the day, continue to keep our eyes fixed on him (Hebrews 12:2). And on those cloudy days look to each other for support and encouragement but remember, as St Francis of Assisi prayed, ‘In giving we receive.’

Rain or shine, may you be inspired by sunflowers and may we all continue to look at the Son. ‘The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.’ (Hebrews 1:3 NIV) J.John Reverend Canon 11

Haslemere Unlocked Thousands of townspeople descended on Lion Green over the August Bank Holiday weekend for ‘Haslemere Unlocked’, a unique event bringing together local churches and bands from across the area for a day of music and celebration.

The day kicked off with a unique and special worship event including St Bartholomew’s and St Christopher’s representing Haslemere Parish alongside St Stephen’s Shottermill and Three Counties Church with support from Haslemere Methodist Church.

A great band on stage played Christian music interspersed by readings and worship explanation and prayers. One of the organisers, Jamie Crick, says, “We wanted it to be as open and inclusive as possible, not just to Christians from across the area but also to anyone coming along to enjoy the days festivities; almost like a worship event rolled into a celebration”.

Local bands, soloists and duets performed all day and the whole event was organised by the Town Council, together with the team behind The Haslemere Fringe Festival which returns to Lion Green at the beginning of July next year with Sophie Ellis Bextor the first headliner announced for the three day celebration.

Lisa O’Sullivan the Town Clerk says, “The Unlocked event was a great success with hundreds of local residents coming along to meet together and be entertained by the impressive array of local talent on display. The Town Council would like to thank everyone who helped us by organising and running Unlocked. Events like this simply cannot happen without the hard work of the volunteers who support them. One question that we were asked many times on the day was if something similar could be organised again!”

In reply to that question, Chairman of the Fringe Festival Ken Griffiths said, “Watch this space, the town will be coming together over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and there will be a huge celebration of this event on Lion Green on June 5th, to be followed a month later with the Haslemere Fringe Festival.”

The town’s music education team ‘Music Works’ under the leadership of Andy Hart and Kate Ledbetter once again played a pivotal role with staging and performance and then there were the many stalls selling local produce.

Picture for Autumn:

‘The Light of the World’

by William Holman Hunt (1853) The picture shows Jesus preparing to knock on an overgrown and longunopened door. The shortening daylight hours in Autumn seem to make the painting especially appropriate at this time of year. It illustrates Revelation 3:20: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me".

According to Hunt: "I painted the picture with what I thought, unworthy though I was, to be divine command, and not simply a good subject." The door in the painting has no handle, and can therefore be opened only from the inside, representing ‘the obstinately shut mind’.

The painting was considered by many to be the most important and culturally influential rendering of Christ of its time.

Some sources claim that Hunt aided his representation of the pre-dawn setting by painting it after dark in a hut on a Surrey farm near Worcester Park. Others maintain that his location was the Oxford University Press Garden. The distinctive lighting may have been informed by a journey to Bethlehem Hunt performed at about this time. .

Upon the completion of The Light of the World it was shown at the 1854 Royal Academy exhibition and was very popular: Arthur Sullivan's oratorio of the same name is inspired by it.

Almost twenty years later, a notable patron of Pre-Raphaelite artists, Thomas Combe, presented the painting to Keble College at Oxford University. There was some controversy about this, since Combe wanted the work to hang in the chapel that was about to be built, but William Butterfield (the building's architect) objected. It took until the early 1890s for the row to be resolved, with the construction of a new side chapel.

Hunt was not pleased by Keble's decision to charge for admission to see his painting, so in 1900 he began work on a new, life-size version. Hunt was now elderly and in poor health, so asked for assistance from Edward Robert Hughes.

On the new work's completion four years later, it was bought by a wealthy shipowner, who took it on a hugely successful world tour. In 1908, the painting returned to England to be dedicated in its new home, St Paul's Cathedral. Hunt himself lived to see this, but not much longer: he died two years later, to be buried in St Paul's. This is an example of artistic expression being used to reach out to those who have lost their faith..

Celebration of Mary Kirkman’s 100th birthday at St. Christopher’s The sun shone for Mary on Sunday 12th September as we celebrated (just a little late) her very special birthday, unlike the actual day when the heavens opened when we gathered outside her house to sing and present her with a bouquet of roses, her favourite flowers.

We had promised her a party 14 months before on her 99th birthday, and when asked what sort of party she’d like she just said, “I’d like to sing in the choir at a normal Sunday morning service at St. Christopher’s”. And so she did, surrounded by a large choir mostly of members of the choir she’d run for about 50 years.

Mary has so many God-given talents: musical (she ran the choir. played the organ and sang soprano), literary (she wrote plays which were performed at St. Christopher’s), the ability to pass on her knowledge (she taught English at several local schools and included one famous woman MP), gardening (she still spends several hours each day tending her large garden) and cooking (her Dundee cake is remembered as excellent). These are just a few of her many talents, all of which she shared with others around her.

After the service came the party. For this we have to thank Frances Reincke and her team. They did a magnificent job.

white cloths and decorated with roses were set up in the garden and food and drink served from the covered gazebo. Ham, salmon, vegetarian quiche and salads were followed by an array of puddings.

The party began with Mary cutting the beautiful cake made by Peter Boxall and photos were taken. Everyone played his/her part in ensuring Mary had a day to remember and later she stood up and thanked us all and told us how much this church had meant to her since her arrival in Haslemere in 1958.

I cannot mention by name all who spent so much time and effort for this. They did it for love of Mary, a wonderful woman.

Happy 90th Birthday Mavis!

Saturday 28th August was a fine and unusually sunny day in a wet month, but a very special day for Mavis Edge. She celebrated her 90th birthday with her husband, Roger, and family and friends.

Word had got around a couple of days before and at 10.00am a large group of friends from our churches gathered outside the Edge house to congratulate her, sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and present her with cards, small presents and flowers.

Mavis looked wonderful in a beautiful cream suit - and seemed almost bridal.

With Roger by her side, she thanked us all and said how much the church - and particularly St. Christopher’s - had meant to her over the last fifty years.

Graham Hawkett’s 101stBirthday

Photo: Dorothea Nattrass Family members converged from Ireland and London and were joined by a few privileged local friends to celebrate Graham’s 101st birthday with a tea party at his home on September 6th. Just as it had done a year previously when he was celebrating the big ‘100’, the sun shone, lighting up the scene.

(Sandwiches, cake and bubbly played their part too.)

Earlier a band of Church friends gathered to sing ‘Happy birthday’ and present Graham with chocolates and flowers.

Vera Moorey Remembered Our organist for many, many years, Vera Moorey died late last year when funeral services were not allowed in church, so we were pleased that her son David and daughter Claire asked for a memorial service to be held at St. Christopher’s.

This took place on Saturday September 4th.

Revd. Justin Manley-Cooper conducted the service and Clive Osgood played the hymns and her favourite pieces of music.

Clive Hawkins was asked to pray for her and I was asked to speak about her musical associations with the town, parish and St. Christopher’s.

Frances Reincke and her flower team, plus other church members, offered to decorate the church with flowers and provide the tea, sandwiches and homemade cakes for Vera’s family and friends in the garden after the service.

It was another beautiful afternoon and about 60 people enjoyed the day. Our thanks go to Frances and her team.

Vera started piano lessons aged seven or eight and was later asked to learn the organ at her home church near Liverpool. Church was always part of her life and she became the principal organist at St.Giles’ aged 20.

She met Ron Moorey whilst on holiday and they married at St. Giles’ and moved to Haslemere, Ron’s home town, where he and his brothers had been boy choristers at St. Christopher’s. Ron later became our long-serving and much missed Verger.

Vera played the organ for weddings, funerals, Mother’s Union services, Women’s World Day of Prayer services and every time she was asked. She never said ‘No’. She was organist for St. Stephen’s and deputy organist for Mr. Redman at St. Christopher’s, before taking over as full-time organist.

She held this position for maybe 40 years before ‘retiring’ some years ago but retirement was not a word in her vocabulary. She continued as before, stepping in when necessary.

We at St. Christopher’s have lost a modest and long-serving couple in Ron and Vera and they will not be forgotten.

The Friends of the Parish After some months of semi-hibernation, the Friends have surfaced and are in operation. We had a meeting on the 23rd August where we had a profitable discussion about the future.

Firstly we have made some changes to the committee. Bernard Coe has resigned as Chairman, after 11 years in the job, and we welcome Chris Lemar as his replacement. Bernard’s time as Chairman saw some significant works done to the two Churches - notably the refurbishment of the St Bartholomew’s organ, but there were numerous other lesser tasks, such as the pew runners at St B’s, the flagpole at St C’s, the dishwasher at St C’s and so on.

A new member, Christopher Schofield, was elected to the committee and was given the responsibility for publicity.

The committee has a busy workload ahead. The Flemish glass is making progress and we hope, with the co-operation of the Museum, to produce a short video display all can enjoy. The St. Christopher organ’s refurbishment will be commencing in the New Year and there will be a programme of Saturday morning recitals, organized by our organist Clive Osgood, at St Bartholomew’s.

We look forward to seeing you at the recitals and with these underway there will be a feeling of normality returning.

Haslemere Rotary Revival My heart goes out to all those past presidents of Rotary up and down the UK. 2020 to 2021 was the year when the pandemic introduced great changes.

The traditional way of doing things - collecting with buckets on the High Street etc - was no longer possible. Meeting venues were switched from social gatherings to virtual meetings on Zoom. Nationally, Rotary membership continues falling and the pandemic had the prospect of making things much worse.

We all asked ourselves questions, “How could our clubs survive and thrive in this empty period of time? Would we be able to raise enough money for presidential charities?” My club’s traditional way of achieving benevolent income was through our Christmas sleigh collections. This method of fundraising had to be curtailed. The prospect of very little charity funding loomed on the horizon.

There was the option of simply surrendering to this scenario or attempting new ideas which may fail, but also could bring success.

Without money in this world there is very little you can do. What about getting grant aid? The UK is one of the most benevolent countries in the world with an abundance of charities, why not ask other charities to support projects ?

It’s no good asking for money without an idea of what you want to achieve with it.

With a series of projects the club received grants of some £5000 from other charities.

The initial project was giving PPE (namely face masks) to local people and asking only for a donation should the recipient wish to. For this we needed a pop-up shop where we could advertise 23

and display our rotary banner. There was plenty of choice and, after some considerable networking, the club had three pop-up shops over a period of time. After 85 years of Rotary in our town this is the first time we had a visible presence in the centre of our community. We were doing things.

Projects included renovating laptops for sixth form students who were on pupil premium (eg receiving free school meals). Renovated laptops and chrome books were given to over 120 students who now could study from home. A year without education at a critical time in life can be seriously detrimental to future chances.

Infant and junior schools were not left out, as again the pandemic affected many of those families with young children. With the aid of a grant of £1000 the club purchased 110 Christmas presents and distributed these amongst seven local schools. Again pupil premium children were given presents in a discrete manner, where parents could collect the present from the school office.

The local coffee roasting business had 100 hessian sacks which they disposed of every week. The sacks are collected by us, turned into carry bags, aprons, waistcoats, cushions etc and sold in our pop-up shops.

The most successful project - and our star performer - is the wood pallet recycling scheme that was started, not by a club member, but a friend of Haslemere Rotary.

All over the UK are piles of pallets which are uneconomical to return for reuse.

There is a distillery locally which gives hundreds of these pallets free. Our friend turned these pallets into garden chairs and tables which are gifted to our pop-up shops and market stalls. A single garden chair takes about one day to make and was sold in the shop for some £40.

This idea was seized upon by our now current president, a local farmer, who designed mud kitchens made from pallets. For those who do not know about mud kitchens, they are a children’s play kitchen where they can mix up mud and 24

water at playtime. These proved to be extremely popular, selling for circa £100.

It didn’t stop here. A local person took a photograph of the pallet furniture and contacted the prison inspector. A group of Rotarians then took samples of the pallet furniture to The Mount Prison in Hemel Hempstead. There are prison workshops on the site the size of aircraft hangars, where prisoners gain many skills, including woodworking. The deal is we deliver the pallets, they break them up into usable wood and make the furniture for our club.

This scenario gives Rotary free materials and partly free labour (Rotary supply hardware and deliver pallets). We now have a constant supply of garden furniture, mud kitchens, cooler boxes and large dice made from square pallet blocks - an idea introduced by the prison inmates.

This business model is so successful that we could even undercut China!

Not only do we now have a regular supply source, the club is able to visualise the total picture, encouraging the prisoners to gain skills to help their eventual rehabilitation.

Our MP Jeremy Hunt awarded the Club his Local Covid Hero’s Award. As a result of innovation raising awareness, four new members have recently joined, as they want to be part of our revival.

With good luck and a willingness to change, clubs will survive, thrive and prosper. You must be willing to try new ideas and don’t worry about failure it’s a learning curve.

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt Weycombe Road churchyard is probably the least well known by parishioners, largely because it is remote from the Church. But, of course, it is remote only by virtue of it not being attached to, or within sight of the Church. It is only about 400 metres along Weycombe Road on the right-hand side. It was opened in 1943 and served the growing population well, including especially those living on the then High Lane Estate. Unfortunately, it had to be closed to new burials in 1990 because of waterlogging, even though there was space remaining for at least two decades. It is managed in the same way as the other two churchyards by Waverley Borough Council (WBC).

Earlier this year the condition of some of the graves close to a large conifer tree was brought to our attention. It was as a result of a request from one elderly lady, whose husband’s grave is very close to the tree. She would like her own ashes to be interred in the grave.

From an inspection, there appears to be two such trees which have effectively fused together. At least one grave stone has been broken by the tree itself and it is possible that more stonework will be discovered. Because it is a fairly recent churchyard, it is the last resting place of many whose families are still resident in the town. We owe it to them to ensure that their needs are not overlooked.

The tree has been inspected by WBC’s tree specialist and he has agreed with our own recommendation that the tree26should be removed. WBC’s contracted

tree surgeons will be carrying out the work and this is currently pencilled in for later in September or October. The tree trunk(s) will be taken down as low as possible. Given the proximity of graves, cutting equipment cannot be allowed to impact with the stonework. Rector Chris is conversant with the situation and once the bulk of the tree has been removed, it will be possible to assess the damage to the grave and plan any further action, should this be required. The photographs show the sheer size of the tree which is not a native species, unlike the oaks which can only enhance the churchyard.

A working party to tidy up the main churchyard at St Bartholomew’s, on Saturday 25 September, will hopefully have improved its appearance in time for Harvest Festival on Sunday 3 October.

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes As I write, ‘Strictly’ will soon return to our screens. A new set of contestants will impress and delight, with dances ranging from classical to quirky.

As much as I like to see rehearsed dancing, there’s something special about the informal kind.

I once saw a documentary about the land of Israel. I remember a scene where some happy event was being celebrated. People in the streets were doing spontaneous circle dances, their arms across each other’s shoulders.

It was an uninhibited expression of joy, and I thought how staid we British are.

The writer of Psalm 149 looked for the expression of joy in worship: “Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.” The Franciscan friar, Brother Ramon, experienced something like that during a big service in Glasgow Cathedral. He speaks of the “sheer beauty, reverence, sense of worship and joy of liturgical dance, performed by the young people, with a background of wind and string instruments and finger cymbals, as they danced a Jewish melody.” I wish I’d been there!

Whatever physical form our dancing may take, what about our inner selves? Is there a dance going on there? The Eastern mystic, Kabir, gives verbal expression to his inner joy: “Dance, my heart, dance today with joy. The strains of love fill the days and nights with music…… The hills and the sea and the earth dance.

The world of man dances in laughter and in tears…... Behold, my heart danceth in the delights of a hundred arts and the Creator is well pleased.”

The composer/hymn writer, Sydney Carter, saw in Jesus an irrepressible dancer.

Even death could not stop him: “They cut me down and I leap up high; I am the life that’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me: I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.”

Macmillan Coffee Morning at St Christopher’s Church Wednesday 22nd September 2021 The sun shone and with a plentiful supply of brownies, sponges, biscuits and other sweet treats, a laden brica-brac stall, a very enticing collection of raffle prizes and some piping hot coffee we opened for business at 10.00am. By 12.30pm we must have had near on 100 very generous people pass through and we raised the magnificent sum of £1264 which will be paid to Macmillan Midhurst.

A huge thank you to all the team who helped in any way, to all who baked or donated raffle prizes and bric-a-brac and most of all to everyone who came.

Well done everyone!

HASLEMERE One of the readers of the parish magazine asked who Lord Pirrie was and what prompted his generosity to his community, which included building and donating the Pirrie Hall. This is a question I have attempted to answer here!

As we drove back from Godalming a few days ago, my wife Diana and I pondered on the matter of the seemingly unending work on the Lodge at Brook. The very distinctive building marks one of the several access points to Witley Park and my photo (below) may give some idea of the intricate work involved. One of the other lodges - the one at the end of the ‘Lea Coach Road’ where it joins the A286 - the main road to Haslemere, is even more idiosyncratic, with a copper dome, among other features.

Lea Park, as the estate was then known, had been bought in 1889 by Mr Whitaker Wright on his return from the USA. He was the infamous swindler and gold fraudster who committed suicide in January 1904 by taking potassium cyanide in the cells of the Royal Courts of Justice after being found guilty of fraud.

Whitaker Wright was the subject of one of my parish magazine articles in October/November 2016. While it is not my intention here to repeat the details of his colourful life, it is probably appropriate to mention that it was the vast amount of money that Wright lavished on Lea Park that attracted the attention of Viscount Pirrie who, in separate transactions, bought a part of the 9000 acre estate from Mr Wright’s executors in the early years of the 20th century. The precise date is unclear, though The Times of 8th May 1909 recorded the sale (but 30

other accounts suggest that Pirrie bought the place in 1905). As a complicated transaction involving the purchase of only a part of Wright’s complex ownerships, could this be the time lag between contract and completion?

The background to Lord Pirrie’s rise is also remarkable. He was born William James Pirrie in Quebec City in Canada in 1847. His father, James Alexander Pirrie (himself the son of a Belfast ship owner), had emigrated to Canada in 1844 to develop the trade in shipping timber. He died in 1849 and his widow came back to Ireland with young William aged two and his little sister.

Involvement with the shipbuilding industry was in the Pirrie’s blood and, at the age of 15, young William James Pirrie was apprenticed to the then newly formed Harland and Wolff shipbuilders in Belfast. By 1874 William Pirrie, aged 27, had risen to the position of partner in the firm. In April, five years later, he married his cousin, Margaret Montgomery Carlisle, by special licence. By 1895 he had been appointed chairman of Harland and Wolff, and was elected mayor of Belfast in 1897. He helped to bring about the formation of the International Mercantile Marine (IMM) syndicate in 1902, with Joseph Bruce Ismay of the White Star shipping line as president.

Pirrie was clearly industrious, visionary and very ambitious. Together with Bruce Ismay, he developed the idea of building a fleet of gigantic luxurious liners to rival the Cunard shipping line which had just built Lusitania and Mauritania. Three new liners were ordered by White Star, and Pirrie’s Belfast shipyard had to be enlarged to enable them to be built. Olympic was delivered first, launched in 1910, and the ill-fated Titanic in 1912. It is interesting to note that Pirrie was forbidden by his doctor to go on Titanic’s maiden voyage as he had just had a serious prostate operation.

Famously the Titanic sank, with the loss of more than 1500 lives, a disaster which Bruce Ismay survived, having allegedly commandeered one of the 16 lifeboats for his own safety. It was his decision to reduce the number of lifeboats from 46 to just 16 . His life was saved but his reputation sank fatally!

Pirrie’s business dealings necessitated his spending much time in London.

Census records reveal that he and his wife were living at Devonshire House, 24 Belgrave Square, Westminster, but the idea of having a substantial country estate obviously appealed and Lea Park at Witley became available following the demise of Whitaker Wright, and his London and Globe Finance Corporation.

By that time Lea Park had been transformed.

Three large lakes had been created, all dug by hand, and the Scottish architect, Paxton Hood Watson had been commissioned to design a new 32-roomed house. There were seven gatehouse lodges at strategic locations around the seven-mile boundary, with stabling for as many as 50 horses. Perhaps the most bizarre feature was the saloon and billiard room under the 50 acre lake, reached via the system of tunnels all designed by the famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The tunnels led from a new island which in turn was reached via Brunel’s new girder walkway. All this work was estimated to cost, at the time, some £1,615,000.

At the time of his purchase of the estate, Pirrie was deeply involved with shipbuilding and running the White Star line. However, Pirrie and his wife, Margaret (who was very much the ‘Society’ hostess), were keen to do what they could for the community of which they were a part. The Pirrie Hall in Brook dates from May 1923, and was given to the community by Pirrie: ‘For the use and benefit of the inhabitants of the hamlets of Brook, Sandhills and the adjoining district.’ He also gave the cricket field in Brook. The front part of the Pirrie Hall was designed to be used as a cricket pavilion.

A number of the estate buildings were designed by Edwin Lutyens although probably not the various entrance lodges which I feel did not provide the scope for his distinctively flamboyant Arts and Crafts style.

Pirrie also built the ‘Temple of the Four Winds’ near the Devil's Punchbowl at Hindhead, all of which was then part of his property (it was acquired years later by the NT).

The connections with the shipping line are still evident in the area today as many of the iron gates on the estate carry the White Star emblem. Pirrie was created a viscount in 1921 but the title died with him as there were no children of his marriage.

Following Lord Pirrie’s death in 1924, the Lea Park Estate was bought by Sir John Leigh and it was he who changed the name to Witley Park. Leigh was a Lancashire cotton millionaire who became a newspaper owner and politician. Lady Margaret Pirrie, by that time living in London, died in 1935.

Seafood Gratin with Caramelised Apples (optional) I found this recipe when I was in Cornwall with all the fresh fish so readily available and it was a great success with the family.

Serves 6 Ingredients: 450ml/16 fl. oz fish stock (M & S do a lovely one) 400g/14 oz white fish fillets (such as cod) skinned and cut into 3/4in pieces 200g/7 oz scallops 400g/14 oz raw prawns 50ml/2fl oz white wine 150ml/5fl oz full-fat milk 100/3fl oz double cream 50g/1¾ oz butter 2 leeks, trimmed, halved lengthways and sliced 50g/1¾ oz plain flour Small handful of parsley, roughly-chopped 80/2¾ oz Emmental cheese 50g/1¾ oz panko breadcrumbs Salt and pepper Crusty bread, cut into chunks, to serve For the caramelised apples: 3 tbsp unsalted butter 2 tbsp golden caster sugar 3 or 4 eating apples, peeled, cored and cut into 2cm/¾in chunks

Method: For the gratin, bring the stock to a simmer in a large saucepan. Add the fish and poach for one minute. Add the scallops and poach for another minute. Add the prawns and poach for another minute. Remove all the seafood with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the wine, bring to the boil and reduce for five minutes. Then add the milk and cream and reduce to a simmer.

Meanwhile, melt the butter in another large saucepan, add the leeks and cook for about five minutes until soft. Add the flour, stir well and then add the milk and stock mixture, a ladleful at a time. Keep stirring until all the liquid is incorporated and the sauce is smooth with no lumps. Bring to the boil, turn down the heat and leave to simmer for about 15 minutes. Preheat the grill to high.

Grease either six shallow gratin dishes or one large baking dish. Add the poached fish, scallops and prawns to the leek sauce and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the parsley and transfer the mixture to the gratin dishes or baking dish.

Mix the cheese with the breadcrumbs and sprinkle over the top of the gratin. Place under the hot grill for ten minutes until golden brown.

For the caramelised apples, melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan. Add the caster sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the apple, stir to coat them in the caramel. Cook for about ten minutes or until the apples have softened and are covered in the caramel sauce.

Serve the gratin with the apples and bread on the side.

Lemon Almond Cake Contributed by: Cathy Moore I have made this cake a couple of times to share at church events and have been asked for the recipe, so thought I might share it more widely. Like all good recipes it has been passed from friend to friend, and altered slightly along the way. The first time I saw it, was in a round 8-inch cake tin, made with 200g of almond flour and sliced and served as dessert with raspberries and cream. This is a tray baked version - but either way it is easy, light, moist and tastes fabulous! As there is no wheat flour, it is gluten free, and if you are careful about what you grease the tin with, it might also be dairy free.

When life gives you lemons … make Lemon Almond Cake.

Ingredients: 6 medium eggs 300g almond flour 300g caster sugar Zest and juice of 1½ lemons Icing sugar to dust Method: Pre-heat oven to 170oC (fan).

Use an 18cm x 24cm baking tray - greased and lined with greaseproof paper (I use butter).

Separate the egg yolks and whites into two large bowls.

Whisk the yolks with 250g of the sugar until pale yellow and creamy.

Fold in the almond flour, zest and lemon juice to form a stiff paste.

In a separate bowl whisk the egg whites and last 50g of sugar into soft peaks.

Gently fold the egg whites into the almond mixture, trying to trap the air.

Pour the mixture into the greased and lined cake tin and bake for 35-40mins until golden brown and firm.

Cut into cubes (about 4cm), dust with icing sugar and share with friends!

Hint: - The cake sometimes sinks or cracks, but this isn’t too noticeable when cut. It is moist, so may stick to the knife!

In My Garden One of the most exciting things about moving - if one is lucky enough to own a property with a garden - is to wait patiently for the seasons to change to discover the hidden delights that the garden might offer. At the onset of Autumn, my new garden has revealed two quite large clumps of rather stunning Japanese anemones which are, I believe deservedly, pronounced this month’s star plant.

One of these clumps consists of a delightful white variety which I have identified as Anemone Honorine Jobert. It is a fabulous plant for brightening up the garden in late summer. It grows in sun or shade and has masses of elegant, cup-shaped, white flowers on tall, wiry stems from August to October. The leaves are vine-like, dark green and semievergreen and are perfect for lighting up a dark corner of the garden, or at the back of herbaceous borders. In my garden this variety is located close to a pair of tall grasses which complement each other well.

The other variety that I am fortunate enough to have inherited in this garden is Anemone Konigin Charlotte which has pale pink saucer-like flowers on tall, wiry, long-leaf stems which have flowered for about ten weeks. These fit perfectly with other hardy perennial plants but in my garden have been planted against a dark green yew screen.

Anemones are reliably hardy and showy perennials that will attract attention and generate comment in your garden. If you feel you don’t have sufficient space for Japanese anemones in your garden, my simple advice is to make some, if necessary by removing another, less rewarding, plant.

It’s a Small World…!

Swanage is something of a magnet for retired C of E clergy, one of whom is my father, Ted Pratt, whose last parish was St. Simon’s, Southsea. With its pretty bay and characterful shops, chalk cliffs and green hills, it’s a place I much enjoy visiting each time I come over to England from Mexico, my home for most of the last thirty years.

Like several other retired vicars, Dad is a member of All Saints, a lively evangelical church that before the pandemic was usually full on a Sunday morning. When I visited him in the summer of 2019, one service took place on a farm in a big hay barn with a barbecue afterwards.

Our hosts were Claire and Andrew Head, Claire being one of the churchwardens. She gave a very warm welcome, and at the end of the service I approached her and thanked her for her hospitality. “Where are you visiting from?”, she asked. “Mexico”, I said. “Oh, I have a very good friend in Mexico City”, she said.

Oh yes?, I thought to myself. Mexico City has a population of about 20 million, and that includes hundreds of thousands of expatriates. I prepared to feign an interest in Claire’s friend.

“He’s in the music business”, she added. I thought: well, it happens that I do have a very good friend in the Mexican music business. But still, what are the chances?

“His name’s Robbie -” “Not Robbie Lear?!”

“Yes, Robbie Lear!”

I have been friends with Robbie since the mid-1990s, where we coincided at Mexico City’s Union Evangelical Church. When I got married at the same church, Robbie gave the opening blessing and he’s also godfather to my firstborn son.

Claire explained that she had been a neighbour of the Lear family in Godalming when she and Robbie were teenagers.

“Let’s take a selfie and send it to him, without any comment - it will really freak him out!”

I saw Claire again last year when I went over with my family. She kindly arranged for young mums from the parish to bring toys for my sons to ‘Look who I met on the farm this morning’ play with during the two weeks of lockdown after arriving from Mexico. And we hoped to jointly welcome Robbie to Swanage this June, but Covid nixed his trip. Maybe next year, Godwilling.

John's influences include Turner and the Russian artist Aivazovsky, amongst others. Expect to see dramatic land and seascapes in acrylics in this, John's debut exhibition.

Denise Jones - Textures of Understanding Wednesday 29th September to Saturday 9th October This exhibition is designed to engage with your curiosity about the material practice of embroidering and about the Suffragettes who embroidered in the confines of prison. The works explore the continuous threading and surfacing of the needle through cloth and the connection between cloth, thread and the body: a body that both thinks and feels.

Wey Ceramics - Playing with Fire Saturday 9th October to Saturday 30th October Members of the society will be exhibiting a huge array of new ceramics to see and purchase. There will be sculptural, decorative and domestic pieces in porcelain stoneware and earthenware. Finished in stunning glazes, subtle pit fired colours or fascinating raku fired textures.

Suzanne & Alison - Emerging Colour Saturday 6th November - Saturday 20th November Alison and Suzanne both find enjoyment in the use of colour in their work and recognise how important it is to bring something uplifting after the difficult times we’ve had. They are influenced by their love of nature and their experiences from travelling to different parts of the world. They make exciting interpretations and although their styles emerge differently, they complement each other.

As the night draws in, the event will be sure to warm up when the bonfire is lit. Wrap up and enjoy a show of spectacular colours in the beautiful Museum garden. We will look at aboriginal art and go on an Australian object hunt in the galleries.
