Dear Friends The mid-nineteenth century saw the beginnings of photography as a medium to record the normal background of life. I’ve always found it interesting to look at old photographs and see how such people and places are a probe into the common history of all which surrounds us. The historical archive of photography stretches back some 170 years from today. Recently I came upon a faded photograph which was taken of a gathering of army veterans who had fought at the Battle of Waterloo (1815). They were all old men of course, but to have a flesh and blood link to an event which now seems so long distant brings the history books to life in a way no other artefact can quite match.

Just recently (the first two weeks of May) Sunday worship has covered the earlier chapters of the Book of Acts which describes the early church forming and finding its role. If you think about it, we, the church, spend remarkably little time actually in church, worshipping - perhaps just 2-3 hours per week. The early church was no different. At one point Peter and the disciples decide to go back to fishing, as if they had nothing else to do. You also quickly find a ministry of gathered care for older people (actually it says widows). It sounds like many got involved in such Christian service because a whole team of disciples are appointed as deacons.

Within the local church such work is usually known as ‘pastoral ministry’. The term comes from farming - caring for sheep on the land. You can see the obvious connection. Visiting people, giving time, drinking tea and providing company is a transformative thing to do. It’s one of those simple ministries which achieves so much, for no other reason than being ordinary and normal.

Age is not a definition of pastoral ministry, but don’t be surprised when I tell you that much of it falls towards the elderly.

Over the Easter week a new ministry began which is very dear to my heart. It’s the Pop-In Coffee Morning. Each second and fourth Thursday (please see the webpage below), a small team gathers in The Link to put on the kettle and open the doors for a couple of hours in the morning. Many older people are also lonely people who may have little company or social activities to go to. This is particularly the case if they remain in their homes, where they may have lived for many years. It is very easy for the elderly to become isolated as the busy fever of life goes on around them. The Pop-In Coffee Morning is not complicated. It’s a sit-and-chat, perhaps with a book and magazine exchange.

What makes it work so well is the people who come to share. If you are aware of those who would benefit from an hour or two of social time and nice chat, do please get in touch.

Ours is an all-age parish: from all people, and for all people. We seek to serve Christ across the spectrum of ages and stages of life. The most important place in our churches is not the altar, nor the pulpit, it’s the door. You will have seen Justin and me there often, and always with a smile - for everybody.

PCC - May Meeting The PCC met on 16th May, which gave us the opportunity to welcome those new to the committee and explain a little of what being a member of the PCC entails.

Ongoing items, such as the Link project, safeguarding, finance, children and family work, junior choir, town ministry and outward giving were all discussed One particular item approved by the PCC, was the decision to make the minutes of each meeting more readily available to the Parish. In future, there will be a link emailed to all those on the Electoral Roll, enabling them to access a private area of the parish website, where the approved minutes will be uploaded. Paper copies of the most recent approved minutes will be available to view at the back of each church.

Sophie’s Bubbles

Thank you everyone who supported me with my birthday bubbles. We now have a six foot bubble machine, safely erected in The Den’s room upstairs at St Christopher’s, for all children and adults to enjoy.

The bubble machine has different changing colours, with sea creatures moving inside the tube. The bubbles can change from many to none, which helps children who might be more sensitive.

A few children and adults have already enjoyed taking some time out of the busyness of their day to enjoy some sensory time. The children from The Den group have also enjoyed watching the bubble machine when they have their quiet time as part of their teaching session.

The bubble machine is open to all, if you just need some time out. Thank you so much, we are super lucky to be able to offer a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy.

More Fun at The Den The Den Youth Group continues to go from strength to strength and now has about 14 regular attendees of 8– 12-year-olds. We have seen them grow ever closer as a group since we began in March, to the point where it really feels like a family. New children quickly settle and are welcomed as if they have always been a part of the group, which is lovely to see.

Easter was a special time. An amazing Easter garden was created by the children at St Christopher’s and used during creative prayer time. The Easter story was discussed, and the children built a cardboard tomb with Chris and acted out the resurrection story.

Easter cards were also made for the elderly and vulnerable clients of Weyhill In-Home Care, which touched the hearts of many over the holiday period. We are making great progress with developing meaningful relationships with the local community and sharing God’s love. Those who were available over the Easter holidays got involved in the food preparation for the Passover Meal and joined us with their families.

Since returning after the Easter Break, we had a ‘welcome back’ indoor pool party and BBQ kindly hosted by the Ingram Family, which was a huge success and helped the children reestablish the bonds they had been building together before the break.

The following week we did some baking ready for our cake sale fundraiser in aid of The Brain Tumour Trust. This was master-minded by Yasmin, and her sister, Phoebe, came up with the idea to combine it with a lemonade stall. Yasmin shared with the church how much the charity means to her.

It was wonderful to see how many children came on Sunday 8th May to run the cake and lemonade stalls and £365 was raised. Thank you to the whole church for supporting us and to all the bakers from the congregation who contributed cakes and biscuits to complement those the children had made.

We have some exciting community and environmental projects coming up and have been tasked with revamping the Haslewey community garden, watering the Lion’s Green orchard and litter picking. Also, the children have been busy making a scarecrow for the Haslemere Scarecrow competition and are joining forces with Families@4 to create the Jubilee Float. Next term we will be involved with the Haslemere Cricket Club, who will give the kids a taste of cricket and then we will help with their pavilion garden. We look forward to sharing more about our community projects in the next issue.

Passover Celebration

What an amazing turnout there was for the Passover evening held at St Christopher’s on Wednesday 13th April. We were pleased to see so many people joining in the sharing of food, worship and celebration and were reminded of the ancient tradition of storytelling through the use of food and wine and the wonderful curiosity of children. We all wonder ‘why’ so often, but it is the young people who constantly ask the question without any shame at wanting to learn. We were reminded of God’s love for us, how he saved the Israelites from the Egyptians and how Jesus asks us to remember his sacrifice and God’s love through the sharing of bread and wine.

Preparations began with a few emails to volunteers some weeks beforehand, with duties allocated between a small team. Bryony dealt with bookings and once we knew our numbers (75), activity started in earnest with the big shopping expedition, myself for food, The Peets for wine and soft drinks. As always, Debbie and Steve provided an excellent selection of wine which was key to the whole evening - as one of the young people noted “What? Another glass of wine!”, “What is the fourth cup for?” Yes, if you’ve never joined us at this evening meal, at least four cups of wine become part of the story for the evening.

Normally the lamb can be bought at Tesco, half price for Easter. On Tuesday morning there was not one leg of lamb in the store. Oh dear, don’t panic! I asked at the customer information desk and found there was no lamb in the 10

Tesco stores at Petersfield and Guildford. Not a good start on the catering front.

Tesco did say they now expected the delivery on Wednesday at 10am, but I decided not to risk it. A trip to Sainsbury’s in Godalming solved the problem; eight legs of lamb, herbs, spices, flatbreads and Seder plate ingredients were all found and purchased. The lovely lady on the check out counter was very interested in our Passover plans.

It is always such a privilege to have the opportunity to share the joy of God’s love and the life of the Church with strangers.

On arrival at St Bartholomew’s I went straight to the church to light a candle.

Three matches wouldn’t light, on the fourth attempt a candle was lit, maybe this was a warning to take extra care, or possibly the matches were a bit damp.

Furthermore, Rob Fox was having double duties due to a local election he was responsible for. Rob is something of a quiet miracle worker, but it did seem he was significantly burdened that day. Nevertheless Rob and Dom had the tables and chairs set up and laid at St Christopher’s by midday. No mean feat, those chairs are heavy and tables have to be ferried from the Link, and then the finished look needs to be welcoming. All this whilst the pair of them were also taking business calls and working for others - well done chaps!

The next job was to get the lamb in the oven. It started cooking at around twelve thirty and there is a timer that reminded me to swap top to bottom in the oven to ensure an even cook. This was done about four times over the course of four to five hours. A long, slow cook and everything in with the lamb wine, fresh rosemary courtesy of Sheila and Geoff, plenty of crushed garlic, red currant jelly, mint sauce and lamb stock in the trays, with the lamb legs that have been rubbed with Baharat (a blend of Middle Eastern spices) and basil oil. Then pray!

Verity’s gang arrived around 2pm, when we started preparing all the extra ingredients that are part of the Passover story. The best bit for chefs is the making of Charoset paste. This is a type of sweet chutney and every Jewish mama will have her own special 11

recipe. We used an amalgam from research on the internet - toasted walnuts and almonds, dates, apples, pears, honey, orange zest, lemon juice and sweet wine. Permission from parents was given to allow our young chefs to taste the paste as we blended it. Hands were thoroughly washed and preparation began. The nuts went in the blender, the fruit was chopped and bit by bit we turned our ingredients into a sweet paste, which is used to remind us of the clay used for making bricks in Egypt, but also how sweet daily work can be in a free society. The other ingredients used in the storytelling include a lamb shank, a baked egg, bitter herbs, parsley, salted water, leavened and unleavened bread and of course, THE WINE! Our gang of Verity, William, James, Jade, Sue, and Rhys then made their way to St Christopher’s to set out the Seder Plate ingredients, i.e. the ingredients used in telling the Passover story. We washed and prepared the parsley and lettuce, then put out ten bowls of everything around the table, hoping everyone would be able to reach the right ingredients when they occurred throughout the service and meal. Everything was covered with cling film to keep it fresh and clean. Cathy also popped in and out to ensure we had everything we needed.

I rushed back to the Link kitchen, where the lamb needed another turnaround and Dom had arrived to start helping with couscous and shortly thereafter the carving. We made a new friend when Ilze turned up. She comes from Lithuania and has been worshipping with us since Covid restrictions have been lifted.

What a joy, as we were one carver down, the good Lord had provided another.

Poor Ilze was asked to help us carve the lamb with one of the somewhat blunt Link knives. She pitched in womanfully and we were ready with lamb, gravy and a large pan of hot stock, which would soon have the couscous in it. Dom’s stock had some great ingredients, including saffron, coriander, paprika and nutmeg.

Meanwhile, back at St Christopher’s, Lucy was on the door, the welcoming committee was arriving and the congregation was gathering.

Chris was making last minute arrangements with Verity and Justin to ensure the service ran smoothly and the young people knew when to ask their questions.

The congregation had brought with them a tremendous array of side dishes and sweets to accompany the hot lamb and couscous (right).

At last we were ready to start the service. The story began, the questions were asked and answered, and we gave thanks through praise and prayer, sharing wine and food. The main meal came about two thirds of the way through the service, by which time we had hidden and found bread, candles had been lit, parsley had been dipped in salt water and bitter herbs dipped in sweet paste.

We found out what the egg and the bone represent. We were more than ready to eat after all that and what a feast, much more than the fleeing Jews would have had when running for their lives. The salads and desserts were amazing and everyone was having a great time. Finally, back to the service, more wine and finding out who the spare place was for and, of course, a hymn. After all the wine and food a little communal singing always works well.

Thank you to everyone who then helped with the washing up and clearing away. To be fair I hardly remember the end of the evening and was quite confused to find some boxes of wine in the car the following morning, which were destined for the bring and share lunch after the APCM! It was a great evening and only worked through everyone’s contributions and attendance. Do come next year if you would like to find out why we drink all that wine and have some strange ingredients in the storytelling.

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes At the time of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee I was on a Painting and Prayer Retreat in Ely. At Sunday’s Civic Service, we found the Cathedral resplendent in shades of gold and purple. The next day - a public holiday - we made for the High Street, where the Bishop (purple-cassocked!) said a prayer, and the Town Mayor declared the festivities open. At 10.30 that night (breaking the rule of ‘Silence after Compline’!) we enjoyed the firework display in the park.

Subsequently, my abstract painting reflected the mood. I entitled it ‘Flags, Flames and Fireworks’. (right) I love celebrations and community events, and look forward to the upcoming Platinum Jubilee. Above all, this will be a significant opportunity to give thanks for ‘our most gracious sovereign lady, Queen Elizabeth’ - and not least for her witness to the Christian faith, and its personal application. Since the year 2000, this has become increasingly explicit in her Christmas broadcasts. Her words have been as ‘seeds sown’ in the living rooms of our land - and beyond, for she speaks where many listen.

A feature of our local celebrations will be the bonfire at Woolmer Hill. Another Painting and Prayer Week was at the time of the Feast of Pentecost. It was windy on France’s northern shore, so I stayed in and made a fire! This was achieved by dropping blobs of paint onto damp paper and letting them run (great fun to do and very effective!) (left) My glorious fire symbolised the Holy Spirit, who cheers, warms , exhilarates, purges and empowers.

This year Pentecost coincides with the final day of our Jubilee programme. In a joyfully crowded day, I hope I shall find a moment to pray my oft-repeated prayer: ‘Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.’ I know my need…..

Pop-in Coffee Morning at St Bart’s On Thursday 14th April, Maundy Thursday, we had the first Coffee Morning in the Link. There was some concern as to how many would actually turn up in the week before Easter but no one needed to worry. There was a good band of volunteers to put up tables, cover them with bright table cloths, provide delicious cakes and learn all about the new coffee machine so that two full flasks of coffee were ready and waiting for the first customers.

There was even a book table (right) thanks to the Donaldsons with some excellent books available for a donation. Chris and Justin visited to give a hand and provide support before they had to disappear to the Cathedral and Sophie led us in a short prayer session before we opened the doors and welcomed our first customers.

Well, it was far better than expected and about 40 people turned up for coffee, tea, cake and a chat. Several books were sold, a third coffee flask had to be prepared and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

The second coffee morning, a fortnight later, was not quite so well-attended but went well and this time there was even decaffeinated tea and coffee for those who had asked and then had to provide their own the first time.

The coffee mornings will continue in the Link every second and fourth Thursday mornings from 10-12noon. Please spread the word. We would love to see you.

Transforming The Link Submitted by Andrew Culshaw

Those of you who attended the annual parish meeting will be familiar with what follows, and I must thank you on behalf of the project team for your resounding “thumbs up”!

An estate agent might describe the Link as “a Grade 2 listed building in need of updating and with considerable further potential, subject to planning permission”.

The Link is undoubtedly in need of updating and most certainly has considerable potential. We can’t make any significant change to its footprint, constrained as it is on three sides, but we can exploit its considerable roof-space.

But before embarking on our project, we have asked the following questions who is the Link for and what needs does it fulfil? We already suspected that there was demand for a good community facility in this part of Haslemere, but we needed to confirm it.

Debbie Peet has been engaging with potential users (eg Crossways Counselling, CAB) and talking to other providers (eg: Haslewey, Methodist Church) to confirm that real and unmet demand exists, which will be essential for any grant applications.

With Debbie’s insights from her engagement with potential users, Cathy Moore and I have consulted with an architect introduced to us by Rev Chris – John Bailey of Thomas Ford and Partners, a firm with considerable experience in church and heritage building projects.

The architect started with a scan of the building space, and a draft design that shows how the Link might be updated to create a building that is more functional for our Church uses, but could also meet the community need. This might include: GROUND FLOOR A large ground floor room without a chimney stack!

A more welcoming aspect with an entrance from Derby Road A large office (Room 2) for use by Bryony, other staff members and users WCs which are independent of the main room.

There would be a truly amazing amount of new space, which could be accessed by stairs and a lift and might provide: A good sized meeting room (Room 3), suitable for choir rehearsals, smaller meetings and youth work, Three smaller rooms (Rooms 4,5,6) for counselling and other social activities as well as “break-out” from meetings There will be excellent storage and WCs on both floors as well as drinks preparation areas which don’t require access to the main kitchen.

So what next?

We need to get a much better understanding of the likely cost and we are currently working with a Quantity Surveyor - we think it will be later in June before we have something we feel comfortable with. All being well we will then apply for Planning Permission, Listed Building Consent and Diocesan approval, and can reasonably expect this to take the remainder of 2022.

In parallel we will put together a business case for National Lottery and other funding, so we are ready to apply as soon as we have the necessary approvals.

Funding We are fortunate to have a number of parish specific trusts that will make a considerable “down payment” on the project. We will also apply to various charitable trusts as well as fund-raising from the congregation, of which more in due course.

When will the project be completed?

We are aiming for the first half of 2024.

An Outing to Salisbury Contributed by Linda Stevens Easter Saturday was a beautiful day and I took the train to Salisbury where my first stop was the delightful Fisherton Mill where I browsed their lovely gift shop after enjoying coffee there. The historic legacy dates back to 1880 when it was built as a grain store for William Main & Sons. The Mill was passed down through the Main family and business was halted during the 1914-18 war, when it was requisitioned by the War Department as bonded warehousing for the Australian Army. Fortunes changed for the family over the next few decades and its future looked uncertain. The current owners are Michael & Deborah Fox who have made the Mill a most successful business. The Mill has won several tourism awards.

My next stop was the nearby St Thomas' Church with its fine restored Doom painting (left) and its memorial to a real Jane Eyre. The flower arrangers were preparing the Easter flowers and I admired the Easter garden by the pulpit. A coffee morning was in progress for the Alzheimer's Society. After obtaining some useful info from the Visitor centre and generally wandering around, I went for lunch at the ‘Rifleman's Table’ in The Close. Then, with time in hand before my pre-booked visit to the Cathedral, I admired the architecture of the De Vaux Lodge close to one of the gates of the Close. The house bears the sun crest of the Fire Insurance.

The Cathedral needs no introduction as many people in our Parish will have visited at some time or other. The flowers were beginning to be introduced into the Cathedral for Easter Day and later in the day the High Altar would be covered with its white celebration cloth. There were 22

votive candles and kneelers on the floor of the Nave, also two lines of chairs. The Dean, Nicholas Papadopulos was present and on the hour he delivered a few words of welcome, the prayer of the day and we were invited to say the Lord's Prayer. Later I visited the busy Chapter House for the Magna Carta. There were long queues to see this.

I then visited Arundells, the home of Sir Edward Heath. The room stewards were pleasant and friendly. There was plenty to see, including many paintings by artists such as Sickert, Augustus John and Sir W Churchill and gifts too from foreign dignitaries which included ivory. The lawns stretch to the river. Various events are planned for summer evenings at Arundells, including open air theatre productions. Walking around the Close I admired the various styles of architecture of the houses. Near St Ann's Gate I saw a memorial set into the wall remembering three Protestant martyrs who died for their faith. Close by were blue heritage plaques, including one to William Golding.

I headed for the train station via the Maltings, where I stopped for tea at a delightful Turkish inspired cafe where I enjoyed lemon meringue pie and a pot of tea before heading for the station and home.

A successful day!

Our Cape Town Church Experience When George and I first went to Cape Town in 2015 we had no idea we would fall in love with the place and end up going every year, missing only 2021.

Dorothy Nattrass grew up in Newlands, one of the southern suburbs of CT, where her brother Andrew and his wife Elisabeth still lived in the old family home near to where we were renting a one room garden house for our stay. Andrew and Elisabeth recommended St. Paul's church in Rondebosch, a next door suburb, as somewhere we would be comfortable worshipping, so went along and were kindly introduced by Elisabeth. As the University of Cape Town is close by and the long Christmas holiday was coming to an end, many students and others involved with UCT were being welcomed back into the congregation, and St. Paul’s, Rondebosch anyone interested asked to join the choir.

I stepped forward and so began a very happy time for me, singing in the choir. We sang lots of wonderful music, and at each Eucharist we had four hymns, a psalm, an anthem and service settings. Evensong was once a month and choir practice on a Thursday evening, just like St. Barts, but earlier!

The Rector’s wife, Karen, was lead soprano and the Rector himself, Derek Pratt, joined us as a tenor for the anthem. When Derek came up for retirement we had special services and a local composer wrote an anthem for the occasion which he conducted himself and it was a huge privilege to be a part of the 24

celebration. Karen and Derek have a son who lived at Frensham who they came over to visit one Christmas and they joined me in St. Bart's choir on Christmas Day! Then came Covid and everything changed. I had kept in touch with some members of the choir and had heard that the Organist had left, one member had died of cancer, some were vulnerable and isolating so there was no more music in that church where there had been so much. Now I believe they had a pianist but no organ and no choir.

So what to do when we returned in January 2022? I felt some guilt abandoning St. Paul's where I had been made so welcome, but followed the Organist, Sonja Brasler, to St. Thomas’ Church, also in Rondebosch, and was welcomed with open arms. Everyone was still St. Thomas’, Rondebosch wearing masks everywhere and there was no official choir but Sonja was trying to get one going and was delighted I had come to support. One member of St. Paul's choir, Zuby, had come to join us and his family were in the congregation, but the others were new to me and all made me feel very welcome.

So what became of the members of St. Paul's choir? A husband and wife couple had a coffee gathering in their garden and invited some of them to catch up with me which was wonderful. The old librarian had retired - well she was about to be 90 - another had gone to a different church and only one was still a parishioner at St. Paul’s, so a sad story of Covid destruction. However, I am happy in my new place of worship in CT where I feel loved and included and will return if we make it to SA in 2023.

Greetings from France Bonjour everyone!

"Friday 8th April 2022; Gold Beach; strong wind; rough sea and

heavy rain! This did not deter us from visiting the new British Normandy Monument at Ver-Sur- Mer. The site is exposed on a cliff, overlooking Gold Beach, and consists of a line of panels telling the story of D.Day as well as memorials to those who died. Very poignant.

This visit was part of a cruise on the River Seine, sailing past apple orchards full of blossom and typical Norman timbered houses. There were other interesting stops along the way, including Monet's house and garden at Giverney which was full of spring flowers.

The last day was spent walking the streets of Paris in search of the Montparnasse Cemetery where we were looking for the grave of Samuel Beckett. We found the Cemetery but not the grave! A bit like waiting for Godot!"

Postcard to the Parish

Greetings from Newbold on Stour Dear All, Whilst a lot of you have managed skiing holidays and more in 2022, I have had some family celebrations and remembrances which are certainly postcard worthy.

My father Herbert, who some of you know, was 90 on 12 th February. My 2 brothers and I rented a country house near Stratford and set about organising a long weekend, inviting all our immediate family (most of whom are in the picture).

Everyone contributed in some shape or form and Dad had a super time.

The Sunday morning was bitter sweet, as it was the anniversary of Mum’s death 28 years ago but the Church of St David’s in the village made us most welcome and listened to Dad talking about Mum. We look forward to postcards from more of you this year Debbie (Peet) 27

Choir News: Don Stacey

At the Passion Sunday Family Communion Service, the Rector revealed that Don was about to celebrate his 90th birthday.

This revelation was followed in The Link by an informal lunch with the Choir, laid on by Linda and Hamish Donaldson.

Hamish went on to propose a toast to Don, including in his preamble a few facts about just how much Don has contributed to the Haslemere community over the years.

Don’s equally informative reply to the toast included even more interesting facts. He is probably the longest-serving chorister in Haslemere, having joined St Christopher’s choir when he was only eight or nine years old. He went on to become a server at St Bart’s and to join the choir with his late wife, Rosie. He’s been here ever since!

The new garden area will be for the whole school community to use for reflection and learning.

Adultery-preaching bible causes a stir in Antipodes ______________________________________________________

By Verity Bowman AN EXTREMELY rare 17th-century “wicked bible” that encouraged readers to commit adultery has been found in New Zealand.

The 1631 text omits the word “not” from the seventh commandment, instead informing readers: “Thou shalt commit adultery.”

One thousand versions of the bible were created until the error was discovered a year later.

Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, its printers, were summoned by King Charles I to court, and fined £300 for the error and their poor workmanship. __________________

Mackerel with Gooseberry Sauce Contributed by Linda Donaldson Mackerel should be cooked with sharp or spicy ingredients that give them plenty of flavour. At this time of year they can be served with traditional gooseberry sauce.

Serves 4 2 large or 4 small mackerel Seasoned flour 2 oz./50g. butter Juice of ½ lemon For the gooseberry sauce:1lb./450g. green gooseberries 2 tbls. water 1/2oz./15g. butter 1oz./25g. castor sugar Have the mackerel cleaned and cut into fillets. Dip each fillet in seasoned flour and shake off the surplus. Melt the butter in a frying pan, put in the mackerel fillets, flesh side down and cook gently for 5 minutes. Turn over and cook the second side. Lift the fillets from the pan and keep warm. Continue to heat the butter in the pan until it becomes a rich golden brown, then draw off the heat and add the lemon juice. Shake over the heat for a moment and pour over the fish. Serve with the hot gooseberry sauce, made as follows:Top and tail the gooseberries and place in a saucepan with the water and butter. Cover and cook very gently until the gooseberries are quite soft. Rub the fruit through a sieve and return the puree to the saucepan. Add the sugar and cook gently until the sauce is smooth and about the consistency of apple sauce.

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt I have mentioned previously that Waverley Borough Council are due to carry out the next safety inspection of churchyard memorials later this year. Such an inspection presents a particular difficulty within Derby Road churchyard. The encroachment of brambles and shrubs and the growth of trees, over the years, has meant that a proportion of the gravestones are inaccessible. These still need to be inspected to ensure they are not a safety hazard. In preparation for the inspection, Waverley’s contractor has commenced clearing bramble and undergrowth starting from the far (north) side of the churchyard. This is already looking so much better and two rows of graves, largely unseen for some years, have now been uncovered as shown in the two photographs (below). It is expected that further clearance work will move forward on a gradual basis.

There is further good news to report. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Parish, funds have been made available for the repair and restoration of the grave of the former Rector, the Revd Sanders Etheridge, who was instrumental in the rebuilding of St Bartholomew’s in 1870/71. It has been in a sorry state for some years and the Celtic cross requires complete reconstruction. It occupies quite a prominent position in the main churchyard, near to the Derby Road entrance, and its return after restoration should be a time for celebration. A memorial stonemason has been appointed and it is 32

hoped that the restoration will be completed during the summer. If it is ready in time, it might be appropriate to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the Church on 28th July 1871, albeit one year late! (left and below).

There was some minor damage in Derby Road churchyard from Storm Eunice and this has been cleared up by Waverley’s contractor.

Unfortunately, one grave has received some corner damage from a fallen branch and Waverley are to investigate the cost of repair, which is expected to be modest.

Waverley will again be recognising No Mow May and eliminating or reducing grass cutting across the borough during the month.

However, unlike in 2021, grass in churchyards will continue to be cut as normal. In 2023 the situation may change and consideration will be given then to adopting No Mow May principles in Derby Road churchyard, to encourage wildlife. *** And, speaking of graves, did you hear the one about the ...

THE COLOSSUS by Francisco de Goya (1812) Goya lived in troubled times when Napoleonic armies threatened Spain. He was shocked at the brutality of warfare and the depths to which human cruelty could sink. One could make a parallel with the Ukrainian war today when Russian forces seem to commit genocide despite World opinion.

The Colossus shows the great panic that war brings to the innocent, shown as little coloured figures fleeing away from a giant. Perhaps the giant represents fear of a superior force.

Sister Wendy prompts us to look again, since the Colossus is not even looking at people or threatening them. An alternative meaning is that the Colossus defends against invaders, a great heroic spirit of Spain fighting to the bitter end. The Colossus does not make visual sense: is he rooted in the soil or a low valley? Is Goya saying that fear does not really exist in material terms? It may not be a specific fear of (say) the atomic bomb, but a generic fear that goes with being a creature that is mortal. He causes panic, and both the giant and his effects have to be reckoned with.

It is not a despairing picture of the human condition, but gives rise to hope. We experience Goya as an old man, tired, deaf and lonely, yet coming to terms with the mystery of suffering and fear. He accepts it and shows the incredible beauty of the Colossus landscape. The darkness is shown as luminous in places, and that hard-won peace is made available to us. We accept our mortality and our reliance on God’s power.

Haslemere Junior Choir update May 2022 The choristers in our Junior Choir have a great deal to celebrate this term, after another successful service at St Christopher’s Church on Sunday 8th May. The children sang, ‘Lead me Lord’ in harmony with the adult choir for the first time, which they did with confidence and enthusiasm, as always. The new black folders helped create a sense of occasion and the children began mastering the art of sticking Post-It notes in their hymn books, so they were ready to sing as soon as the organ piped up. One of the highlights of the service was the round of applause the choristers received after singing their Easter Jubilation song. Everyone left on a high after enjoying cookies and lemonade served by the children from the Wednesday Den group.

The next couple of weeks will be busy as the choristers prepare to perform in the Jubilee Concert at St Christopher’s on 4th June and the Civic Service at St Bartholomew’s on 5th June.

Haslemere’s Houses - bricks and tiles We benefit from a wonderfully diverse and rich environment, created over centuries with many different building techniques and locally available materials. However, articles have long appeared in the press about the poor standard of housing in this country, currently specifically referring to low thermal insulation. Much of our housing stock in Britain suffers from this.

Why? A continuing desire by builders to cut corners and save money has long been part of the problem. So was our industrial revolution, which led to factory owners building huge numbers of terraced houses for the workers abandoning the countryside for the towns. (Such ‘jerry building’ in the mid 19th century has been said to allude to the walls of Jericho, which fell down at the sound of Joshua's trumpets.)

In addition, as a country, we are fortunate not to have suffered invasion in the past years of destructive warfare and as a consequence many of our old domestic buildings survive, even ones that practicality suggests are really not sound enough to be upgraded, but which their owners are determined, understandably, to keep going and to enjoy them for the pleasure they give and the domestic history they conserve.

There will almost always be a balance between retaining character and improving living conditions and energy efficiency. Buildings that are damp are also cold. There has long been an awareness of the need to improve basic housing standards, although the problem of rising damp was not overcome until the late Victorian era when the idea of using slate as a damp proof course originated.

To understand some of these housing issues, one can look around various parts of our town of Haslemere. A short walk from our house to the centre of Haslemere includes 36

Lower Street with the 17th century terrace of workers’ cottages on High Pavement (notable recently for the community spirit demonstrated by the charming additions of the linear communal garden). (previous page).

The first cottage of the row, the interestingly named “Good Intent” was at some point a modest ‘Ale House’ at the western end of the terrace (now finding itself close to the former Methodist chapel - right).

Those householders who brewed their own weak ale were permitted to sell it to the public and it was one of the many alehouses which proliferated in the town up until the 18/ 19th century. [left)] My photo of the side of Objets d ’art reveals something of their evolution.

Many of these characterful cottages are very small with low ceilings, and back onto steeply-rising ground. They are of brick and were generally painted white at ground floor level and with various designs of tilehanging on first floor elevations. The tilehanging was not designed to be an aesthetic adornment; workers’ houses did not

demand that level of sophistication.

Bricks and tiles were of necessity locally made wherever possible and, though clay occurs in various parts of the town, it is not very durable. Firing clay to make bricks requires prodigious quantities of fuel. Wood-fired kilns struggle to achieve high enough temperatures to fire bricks or tiles adequately and it is for that reason that houses from many different eras have exfoliated tiles and split or mis-shapen bricks. This will not necessarily affect their structural integrity 37

and can add character. However, bricks which are crumbly and soft are too porous to keep water out and at some point, probably in the 16th century, tilehanging was conceived as a clever solution to the problem of poorly-fired bricks.

It was easier to fire slim tiles than the rather larger bricks. In that way tiles could be used to clad walls and thus make buildings more watertight.

Different tile makers would produce tiles to their own distinctive design and thus we see varieties of fish scale and other shapes.

My photograph (left) shows some of the many designs, including those on ‘Penfolds’ at the foot of Sandrock.

If tile-hanging did not keep the rain out, Mathematical Tiles could be the answer.

Mathematical Tiles were an important cultural advance as they enabled houses, which had hitherto been built of random-laid stone or other more rustic material, to be given a more svelte veneer: Brick! Or at least what appeared to be brick!

Mathematical Tiles were a more exotic and unfamiliar creation. In our own High Street is The Town House, an elegant house with a fine brick façade (enhanced by the Haslemere Society’s blue plaque!). From Cobden Lane you can see the precision of what appear to be bricks on the flank wall of the house: the clue to spotting these mathematical tiles is in the ‘pointing’; the more than usually thin line of mortar between the joints. The photo(right) shows the very precise finish.

Where genuine brickwork was also used there came the point where the two materials met 38

and the photo shows the different spacing. At the back of the house the (very good) original random stone wall is still in place. Only the flank walls were ‘gentrified’.

If built carefully these mathematical tiles are almost indistinguishable from conventional brickwork. They have been a part of Britain's architectural heritage since the early 1700s and were used to make timber framed buildings weathertight by covering earlier brick or mortar infill panels. I believe their use is mainly confined to Kent and Sussex. Many houses in Brighton have frontages which have bay windows and I have often wondered how such a feature could be built without cutting and shaping each individual brick. The mathematical tile provides the answer! The name possibly stems from the mechanical precision involved in their manufacture.

Our knowledge of the performance of materials improves constantly and, together with advances in technology, new techniques and materials, this should ensure that new homes can be built to be more energy-efficient and improvements can be made to older buildings without loss of character.

Light a Candle Occasionally I drop into St Bart’s to light a candle and take a moment to thank God for all my blessings.

Sometimes it is to remember my parents and others who have passed on to better things. Sometimes it is asking for a particular blessing for a troubled friend or support for a new venture. A moments peace with God. What I truly appreciate is that our church is open and there is a candle stand there for us to light a light in the darkness. Many thanks to those volunteers who make sure the church is open for visitors, it is much appreciated.

In My Garden Philip Duly Having lived at my new address for almost one year, I am finally considering the garden to be my own. Until now I have felt the great burden of responsibility that arises from inheriting a fully-stocked garden lovingly created by the previous owners. I have hitherto gone to great lengths to ensure the ornamental grasses are cut back to the correct length and at the correct time. I have cautiously removed the foliage of the many varieties of lily here having never grown them in my previous gardens. Also I took great care to keep the rhizomes of the abundant irises uncovered over the winter to ensure good growth and flowering.

Having accepted and upheld what I have considered to be the responsibilities of the garden, I now feel I have earned some rights too, not least the ability to make some modest changes. To name just a few, a woody cistus has been removed, some overgrown azaleas reduced in size and some giant rhubarb, Gunnera Manicata, this month’s star plant, moved from its previous location.

These very large and showy plants from Brazil are mainly grown for their rough-textured leaves and spiny stems. They also carry tiny but attractive red -brown flowers in summer and if you have the room, these robust perennials are well worth the investment and space. I have successfully moved about a dozen plants and they are flourishing in their new positions. Not only do they suit this area of the garden that predominantly consists of green foliage and some white flowering shrubs, but the process of moving them has given me the confidence to make further necessary changes that all gardeners should be free to undertake, however established or welldesigned the garden was when you first moved in.

It’s a Small World (and how Yolande Ball contributed to this magazine) Excerpts from the eulogy delivered by Juliet Wragg, Yolande’s daughter, at her mother’s memorial service on May 4th, adapted and added to by Ann Lear).

Yolande (or Yolley as some of us called her) was born in Kenya, where her father worked for a tea company. She went to school there and then, later, in England, where her parents would return to live in due course.

Aged 19, she trained at St Thomas’ hospital and, after four years, became a Nightingale nurse and later, after further training, a midwife.

In 1962 Yolley joined the Educational Cruises and enjoyed the job so much that she went on to join the Navy where she worked her way to the position of Senior Nursing Sister.

More adventures followed, including a stint in Singapore, where she became friends with Sally, who would later introduce her to Roger Ball - an introduction which would lead to their getting married. They were in their 30s at the time and, on an early ‘date’, Roger went to Yolande’s house where he spoke with her parents about Kenya and his own parents’ lives there.

Yolande’s mother went to a photo album and pulled out a photo of two children on a ship travelling between the UK and Kenya, on the back of which was written ‘Yolande aged 2 with her boyfriend Roger Ball’.

They were married in 1976, and settled in Haslemere where they lived for over 40 years in a community which became extremely important to them.

They were part of a whole range of organisations - the Garden Society, the Fine Arts Society, the Museum, the University of the 3rd Age and many more. They were also key members of St Bartholomew’s Church, and the community which goes with it.

For many years (until 2018) Yolande took on the responsibility of organising the distribution of this magazine. It was published every month at that time, so each month she - and one or two others she enlisted to help - would sort some 120 copies of the magazines into 20 bundles for volunteers to pick up and distribute to homes . She would also take in, sort and bank (with Roger’s help) the subscriptions collected by the distributors.

So we wanted to take this opportunity to enjoy their ‘Small World’ experience, remember Yolley fondly and to express our appreciation for her service to the magazine.

She is sadly missed by many.

Tuesday Club News from The Hunter Centre The Hunter Centre launched a Carers Support Group last autumn which has been very well received. It is now able to run with a structured programme of activities each Tuesday afternoon from 1.30 to 3.30 and has a regular group of attendees.

All meetings are intended for both carers and those being cared for with a diagnosis of dementia. The meetings and activities are all free.

If readers know anyone caring for someone with dementia or anyone who is feeling isolated and might benefit from having others to talk to who are in a similar situation, then please suggest they contact Denise on 01428 654710.

Denise is the deputy manager of the Hunter Centre and has a wealth of experience to share with the group. She may also be contacted by email deputy@thehuntercentre.co.uk The new programme is arranged as follows.

The first week of the month is now a Tuesday Talk by outside speakers on issues relevant to those living with dementia.

The second Tuesday is dedicated to local outings, which have recently included Forest Lodge and the Grayshott Pottery. The welcome change of scene and opportunity to socialise has been much appreciated by all participants.

On the third Tuesday there is an opportunity to join in with chair-based exercises from 2 to 3 pm. Gentle exercise to maintain mobility and movement is valuable to all and it is free.

Finally on the last Tuesday of the month, Denise is running a lunch club from 1.00 - 3.30pm. This again is free although donations would be welcome and booking would be appreciated.

Pentecost in Jerusalem Parish Pump Magazine Resources On that long ago first morning of Pentecost, Jerusalem was crowded with thousands of visitors, for it was one of the most popular feast-days in the Jewish calendar – the Feast of Firstfruits, looking forward to the wheat harvest.

In one small room of that great city, a small group of people who had followed Jesus were praying. There was nothing else for them to do: Jesus had died, He had risen, and He had ascended, promising to send them ‘a Comforter’. They were left alone, to wait at Jerusalem. And so, they waited – on Him, and for Him. They were not disappointed, for that morning the Holy Spirit fell upon that small room, and transformed those believers into the Church, Christ’s body here on earth. Pentecost was not the first time that the Holy Spirit came to the world – throughout the Old Testament there are stories telling of how God had guided people and given them strength. But now His Spirit would use a new instrument: not just isolated prophets, but the Church, His body on earth.

Acts opens with the preaching of the gospel in Jerusalem, the centre of the Jewish nation. Within 30 years the Gospel had spread throughout the northern Mediterranean: Syria, Turkey, Greece, Malta... to the very heart of the Roman Empire: Rome. The Church was on the move – God was on the move! He was calling people from every nation to repent, turn to Jesus for forgiveness of their sins, and to follow Him.

We all get tired and battle weary sometimes. The disciples of Jesus had just been through a three-year long roller coaster adventure with Jesus that had culminated in His death, resurrection and ascension into heaven.

The range of emotions would have been hugely taxing in the days leading up to Pentecost, as they remembered Jesus weeping in the garden of Gethsemane, betrayed by Judas, brutally beaten and crucified, and then dead and buried.

Then there had been the shock and awe of finding out that He was alive again! But then He had left them again, to return to His Father. By the time the day of Pentecost arrived, the disciples would indeed have welcomed some fresh spiritual fire!

For us today, many of us have felt emotionally drained with the uncertainties caused by Covid 19, the worry of prices rising at an alarming rate, and now the pain and uncertainty of what will happen in the war in Ukraine.

So, what better day to pray for fresh spiritual fire for each of us? As we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and birth of the Church, let us thank God that He will never leave us or forsake us.

What’s on at Haslemere Museum April/May 2022 EXHIBITIONS Flight Lines Until 25th June This exhibition follows on from a joint undertaking by the British Trust for Ornithology and the Society of Wildlife Artists, made possible by the generous legacy of the late Haslemere Museum Trustee, Penny Hollow. The exhibition showcases some of the artwork that was created during and after the project, along with examples of bird-tracking equipment.

Under the Sea 2nd July – 31st August A family friendly exhibition on the underwater theme with interactives and information giving some extraordinary facts about this hidden world and the creatures that live there.

Art Vinyl 2nd July – 31st August This exhibition celebrates the very best in contemporary record sleeve design.

Each year since 2005, Art Vinyl compiles a short list of the most creative and well-designed record covers of the year, joining an archive of stunning designs from the past seventeen years. On display will be the top six from each year.

Petworth Cottage Nursing Home (PCNH) Needs Your Help The first patient was admitted to Petworth Cottage Hospital on 20th November 1867 - a young male, aged 13 from Coates, with an injury to his pelvis from an accident and was discharged (healed) early the following February. During the first year of operation, management committee notes show that the hospital was well-supported by the local community with money and other gifts including fruit, books, wine and, curiously, some calf’s feet (presumably not intended for transplant purposes)! After the Second World War, the hospital was taken into the NHS as a Cottage Hospital but closed in 1969. In 1971, the premises were bought by Jeanne Courtauld and re-opened using cast-off equipment from King Edward VII Hospital.

PCNH exists today as a care home with space for 32 residents covering the spectrum of short-term, long-term, respite and palliative care of the highest standard. We function as a Charity and are non-profit making. The last two years have proved, unsurprisingly, challenging - both in terms of running the home and raising funds. Suffice to say the team has risen to the challenge quite marvellously and (touch wood) its residents have remained unscathed by the wretched Covid. Indeed, we have during the pandemic assisted and supported some 40 residents with their fees, most of whom have lived within the environs of Petworth, thereby fulfilling our responsibilities as a Charity.

The Friends of PCNH are a body of local volunteers who provide additional funds through specific events and collections. These funds contribute towards the cost of essential equipment and non-medical items to improve the comfort and well-being of the patients. Recent fund-raising has provided an interactive TV screen for patients to use, refurbishment of the resident’s lounge and installation of a new medication room.

Volunteers have only recently been allowed back in to help support the regular staff with the provision of fresh flowers in public areas, morning coffee for residents and tea and cake in the afternoon. They also support in one other 50

critical way - bringing the outside world into PCNH with news, fresh perspective, a change to daily routine and company. We are particularly keen to welcome new volunteers now.
