Dear Friends Do you use Twitter? I suspect most of you reading this don’t. However, imagine a 24/7 newspaper website where you can contribute your own news and commentary, with anybody adding their own counter-comments. It’s a constant global conversation about (literally) everything. Thankfully, Twitter allows its users to focus upon their own areas of interest. For me, you will know that my viewpoints are all about the Christian faith, church and society.

The parliamentary churn this year has been frothing with stories about truth and lies, or integrity and dishonesty. Have you noticed? On many past occasions I’ve been tempted to bowl my own ball into the skittles, by way of things I could draw attention to in sermons or the many other ways I can otherwise get my words out there. Regular Twitter comments about the church speaking out on things (anything it seems) are often negative, with calls for the bishops to keep out of politics, or calls to get our own house in order, etc. I console myself with the thought that in the population, the matters of integrity and dishonesty have not gone unnoticed if the polls are anything to go by. So, are we an unethical, post-moral society? No, it seems. Thank God. In mid-June St Bartholomew’s School had its SIAMS inspection. If you are not sure what that means, well it’s an inspection of the faith basis of the school. The Church of England and the Methodist Church carry out thousands of such inspections each year. The big-ticket item for SIAMS is to examine how the school’s Christian values permeate the life of the school through behaviour, lessons, community and worship. I’ve been a governor of four different schools and over the last thirteen years, have seen three different SIAMS inspections. St Bartholomew’s School are crystal-clear on their own values: (B)elieve, (A)chieve, (R)espect, (T)rust, (S)ucceed. Each of these opens into many further values which link directly with Christian teaching and stories from the Bible. Most weeks Victoria Martin and I are in church or school for assemblies on these values.

I am clear that we (the Church of England, nationally and locally), still occupy a place of moral conscience for which we are both responsible and accountable. The Christian Faith does not bring a moral view drawn out of philosophical or theoretical debate, but one which transcends all human interests with proven longevity. Like many, I have lamented the apparently receding tideline of the value-based society only to find that perhaps it is still alive and well in the hearts of many. Recent events in Westminster tell the story. The majority of the UK population do not readily attend their parish church, yet they know that the good teachings of Christ are right for their children, their neighbourhoods and their country.

I believe that it is the work of the church in its schools that sustains this goodness of people in good moral thinking and acting. Not everyone goes to church, but everyone does go to school. May I quote the old rather cheesy 1970s song ‘I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them show the way.’ Or perhaps better from the gospel of Matthew: “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”

Please do pray for our school and children’s work. It might just be the best future we have.

CAF Update It has been a busy couple of months for the CAF team! We had great fun preparing for the Jubilee Procession - on Sunday 15th May we held a Special Jubilee session in the Link! The Den children helped Verity to paint the banners for the ‘bed float’ whilst the younger children prepared crafts for the day such as doctors’ carry cases, flower pictures to go around the frame of the bed and x-ray pictures to name but a few. There was an afternoon tea fit for a queen for the families to all enjoy. A big thank you once again to all of our wonderful volunteers for helping to make the afternoon such a success! On Sunday 5th June we then wheeled our wonderful ‘bed float’ onto Weycombe Rd and joined in the fantastic Jubilee Procession! The bed was completed by the fabulous scarecrow of the queen ‘in her younger years’ which Verity and the Den children created to great effect! We clearly looked rather convincing as I had several people comment to me afterwards that they hadn’t realised I was a nurse! It was brilliant that Haslemere Parish could be part of the Jubilee celebrations and in addition Photo contributed by Will Pattenden along the walk of the procession the children had donation buckets and managed to raise almost £100 which was donated to the League of Friends at Haslemere Hospital.

Fun Farm at First Steps On the 18th July First Steps enjoyed a fabulous visit from Basil and Crew Mobile Farm.

Despite the hot weather, we were very lucky to use St Christopher’s church garden which provided lots of shade under the trees. We were joined for the morning by a donkey, goats, pony, lambs, ducks, chicks, chickens, tortoises, guinea pigs and rabbits.

The children were able to handle, touch and feed the animals and the farm staff were happy to teach them about caring for them. Throughout the morning the children were able to enjoy other activities including water play, sand play, animal crafts (crazy animal balloons and masks!).

After a lovely fun morning the children joined together for the wonderful lunch that was provided by the families. The children ended the morning with an animal-themed singsong.

We said farewell to: Noah, Amelia, Hasfe, Liliana and Oscar who start their new adventures in September – we will miss them all!

First Steps returns on Monday 12th September from 10am to 11.30am 0–4-yearolds welcome!

First Steps Team Thank-You Morning.

At the Rectory Victoria and I were able to welcome the First Steps team for a wonderful and well-deserved coffee, tea and homemade cake - Victoria is a great cook.

We have an amazing group of volunteers, their commitment is outstanding. They work very hard throughout the whole year, making First Steps a warm and welcoming place to have great fun - a happy place to show God’s love is for all.

First Steps is on Monday mornings during term time at St Christopher's Church. Children can have fun with our many wonderful toys, inside and outside play and crafts. We finish with a circle time for singing, instrument playing and stories - lots to keep the little ones happy. This is a wonderful group, which offers fun in a relaxed environment and a place for local families to get together.

Parents, grandparents, carers and soon to be parents are all welcome.

Refreshments are provided for children and adults. First Steps is free - just come and have fun with your children.

Summer at The Den The summer months at The Den have allowed the group to take advantage of the drier and brighter evenings and become involved in more outdoor community and environmental projects. This is part of the mission element of the group which forms part of our children’s ministry, nurturing discipleship. It enables them to make a difference to causes they care about, whilst meeting the needs of the local community and environment.

In Spring we reached out to the local community to see what needs there were, and we had many requests in return. Our first project was when we teamed up with a local green organization, ‘Love Haslemere Hate Waste’, to do a litter-pick on Lions Green before the Jubilee which was featured in the Haslemere Herald. We were also invited to Imbhams Farm, as they needed help planting a wildlife corridor as part of their conservation work. Margaret Barlow gave the children a fascinating talk about the farm and got them to bottle feed some orphaned lambs. This trip went so well that we have been invited back again in the autumn.

Two sessions were spent revamping the Haslewey Centre community garden with help from Peter Clarke.

This involved planting a tree and flowers, weeding, trimming bushes, staining planters, watering and decorating pot plants and decorating and setting up a bird house.

Then there was The Jubilee weekend!

The Den kids made a scarecrow of the Queen for the Haslemere Scarecrow Competition. They had a wonderful time doing this and we tied it into learning about ‘The Body of Christ’ in our discussion time. The scarecrow had pride of place on the Parish Jubilee float and together with Families@4, the kids raised almost £100 in change for the NHS using donation buckets during the Parade.

As Haslemere Parish is a sponsor of Haslemere Cricket Club we have been developing that relationship further through The Den. Billy Boxall, the Head Coach expressed the need for help clearing the weeds around the pavilion before their ‘President’s Day’ event. The Den kids blew him away with how speedily they cleared the weeds. We had a competition between the volunteers and the children, which they won hands down, and then we got stuck into some fun games of cricket.

On another occasion, back at St Christopher’s, we had a very instructive evening with Frankie Gaiter who led us on a trail around the church with the children finding answers to the clues Frankie gave them and then taking turns to ‘talk’ from the pulpit.

The Den kids have worked hard this last half term, and so it was lovely when they got to have another great session in the pool at the Ingram’s family home and enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the fire for s’mores. For our final get together we were all treated to an evening at the Vaughan family home when the children were able to enjoy boating on the lake and water sports. In addition to the volunteers, we were joined by Chris, Sophie and Justin. This was a great way to end the term.

We continue to have a good turnout, with a maximum of 14 in the group. Due to the nature of what we do with the children, this is an ideal number. There is now a Whatsapp group for parents and volunteers and this has proved valuable for communication and sharing photos, allowing more interaction and feedback.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School As you might be aware, Mr Beckerson left St Bart's at Easter to become Headteacher of a large primary school on the south coast. Since then, I have been promoted from the Deputy Headteacher position to the post of Headteacher. I have loved working at St Bart's for the last eight years and I am excited about taking on the opportunity to lead the school. In the short time I have been Headteacher, we have received a successful 'Good' Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) Report which is a credit to the pupils, staff, governors and the wider community for our school of which we are very proud.

Looking to the future, I am sure there will be lots of opportunities for the school to work closely with the church and the wider community. I would love for the school to explore opportunities for all of us to live in a more sustainable way and protect our environment.

Andrew on Inflation and Eating Elephants Inflation is very much in the news at the moment but of course it has never really gone away. Even in good times the target is 2%, so that as the years go by prices creep up and for many incomes go up too - some pensions are index-linked as well.

The church’s outgoings also increase every year wages, utilities, building repairs, insurance, paper etc.

But for some reason we only ask you to review your giving once in a while.

This really doesn’t make sense - surely the idea of a smaller increase more often makes more sense?

If giving had kept pace with inflation over the last ten years we would be running a modest and healthy surplus every year.

So I would like to suggest that everyone reviews their giving each year, reflecting on how their income and other circumstances have changed.

36 members of the congregation already increase their giving in line with inflation each year.

I would like to encourage those who are members of the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) who don’t currently opt-in to indexation to do so by emailing info@parishgiving.org.uk. You can opt-out at any time or change the amount you give. It is perfectly acceptable to reduce your giving if circumstances change.

If you give by Standing Order you may wish to consider moving to PGS or put a note in your diary (on your birthday perhaps) to thank God for his goodness in the past year and consider what you should give in the year ahead.

The promise of all this is that by making small and regular increases we can avoid the sort of appeal we made earlier this year. It is what I call ‘Eating the Elephant’ - many people eating (or in this case contributing) smaller amounts over many sittings!

Cathy Moore and I were invited to join Adine Copeman's flower team for the Chichester Flower Festival in June. We were both honoured to have the chance and it was great fun to show them to so many friends from Haslemere Parish who came to look.

Thanking Rita for 50 years service to St Christopher’s A beautiful service was led by Chris Lemar on Sunday, July 17, followed by a celebration to thank Rita Bicknell for all that she’s done over the last 50 years for St Christopher’s.

A quote was read from the meeting of the St Christopher’s committee 1972 April minutes that Rita had attended. Even though it was only her 2nd meeting, she was offering suggestions for the harvest festival, generously giving of her time and lively ideas.

To this day she is still giving, having attended last Thursday’s meeting.

Every church should have a Rita!!

The thanks were ended, with a beautiful prayer read that the Rector had written as he was unable to attend in person due to ill health. This was all followed by lots of chatter bubbles, nibbles and laughter.

Thank you Wow! What a lovely surprise I had on Sunday 17th July!

I cannot believe you were able to keep it a secret from me - as you’ll agree, I generally know what’s happening in church life at St Christopher’s.

I was very interested to hear the committee notes from 1972, which generated a few giggles! I did wonder why there were a few more people attending the Praying on Sunday service, not knowing they were there for me.

I am overwhelmed by the love, kindness and the wonderful gift of the Golden Rose to celebrate my 50 years on the committee. I did shed a few happy tears, I feel so loved by all.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Tea Party on Lion Green In early 2022, Justin Manley Cooper was approached

by Ken Griffiths and Hamish Donaldson and they asked: “Could Haslemere Parish do the teas for the Big Cream Tea on Lion Green for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?”

“I’m sure we can” - came Justin’s reply - “How many are you thinking?”

“Oh about 2000” was the response!

Well, after a lot of thinking of how this could be achieved - in a field with no water and electricity, by a group of willing volunteers and no actual experience of serving such huge numbers - we are extremely proud to say WE DID IT!!

An estimated number of well over 1200 cups of tea were served in under two hours - so over ten per minute!

We had urn captains, milk pourers, tea pourers, ticket takers, scone hander-outers, queue directors and runners - making up a team of some 20 people, all dressed in official aprons with ‘More Tea Vicar’ emblazoned across them.

A massive thank you to all involved and a huge achievement by the team - well done to all!

Evelyn Hughes Whenever I can I get there, I enjoy Evensong at St. Bartholomew’s. When Chris was encouraging us to attend he said something about it being a devotional ending to the day - and so it is. Thank you Clive and the choir, for helping to make it so. Psalms and canticles are sung for us, and I find it refreshing simply to follow the words in the prayer book. The readings are from the King James version of the Bible. The old language comes alive when beautifully read which it is!

The very word ‘evening’ is evocative. There’s the story of Adam and Eve. Guilty of sin, they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. (A modern translation has ‘at the time of the evening breeze’. I’m writing this piece in a heatwave. Words like ‘cool’ and ‘breeze’ are like balm to my soul!) It strikes me that when the story is told, the emphasis is on sin and its consequences - perhaps we should marvel more at the wonder of a God who wants to walk and talk with his people The Gospels give us some lovely ‘evening’ cameos. St Luke tells us: ‘As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick brought them to Jesus, and he laid his hands on them and cured them’. Come evening, Jesus often sought a quiet place to pray - not least in the Garden of Gethsemane. At evening on the day of his resurrection he came and stood among his disciples and said: “Peace be with you”. He caught up with the Emmaus couple on their way home.

“Stay with us”, they said, “for it is almost evening.” At table, the resurrected Jesus made himself known to them in the “Stay with us”, they said, “for it is almost evening.” breaking of the bread .

Evensong closes with a thoughtful end-of-the-day hymn. It’s good to sing such hymns in the company of other people. Having my own hymn-book, I find it rewarding to reflect on them at other times, too.

A picture for Pentecost Season:

Christ in the House of Martha and Mary (Velazquez - 1628)

A young girl has coarse, chubby hands, puffy cheeks and appears to have been crying (with a pout on her lips). She seems reluctant to listen to the words of the older woman as she grumpily grinds spices or garlic in a mortar. The scene has been interpreted as offering advice from the older woman as she nudges the girl with her finger. Is she drawing the maid’s attention to the biblical scene of Christ and Martha and Mary, an image reflected from a mirror or a serving hatch, perhaps?

Christ seems to be looking at Martha standing behind Mary, suggesting that he is commanding her in some way. This makes sense if we know the story of Christ’s visit to the house of Martha (and of her sister, Mary) from Luke 10: 38-42. Martha complains that she is burdened by work and asks Christ that Mary - who is seated at His feet - get up and help her. Christ’s reply is that Mary has chosen “that good part that shall not be taken away from her”. Is Christ’s gesture intended to stop Martha complaining? Perhaps Christ favours the contemplative life of Mary rather that the domestic labours of Martha.

Is this why the kitchen maid is upset, that her work may not find favour with Christ? Velázquez seems to be offering the young woman (whom some scholars have identified as Martha) an answer meant to comfort her. The old woman’s gaze is directed at the table with its contents which include fish, a traditional symbol for Christ, and eggs emblematic of the resurrection. St. Theresa of Avila, a proponent of monastic life, expressed it as “The Lord walks among the pots and pans.” God is found in the lowliest kitchen jobs, an observation probably intended to appease and console Theresa’s nuns who felt that these menial tasks kept them away from their spiritual pursuits.

But is the maid persuaded? The distant look in her eyes could indicate that she is mulling over what the old woman is saying. Good works and the service of others is a means of following Christ, but unless it is inspired by love and joy, the act of self-sacrifice becomes empty and thankless. Think of how reluctant some of us appear to be when helping on the coffee rota in church!

The older woman (her older self with lined face?) implies both a hard life of service and of profound reflection.

She sympathises with her junior, but recognises the underlying purpose of her work, as does Christ’s own teaching of scripture and love, between active and contemplative roles.

What is intriguing in this painting is the way in which we find ourselves involved in trying to understand it. The biblical scene; a framed picture in the background or a reflection in a mirror of the painting hanging on a wall facing the maid? Both allow for different interpretations, but the mirror one is perhaps more persuasive given that Velázquez used the mirror motif in later paintings, notably The Rokeby Venus (or Venus at her Mirror). Velázquez creates the illusion that we share the same space, and are in the same room as the two women. Why not appreciate it for yourself in the National Gallery, London, where the picture is now housed, or on the website?

Spotlight on…..

Ida Macneal Gareth David Turning down a job offer from Sir Winston Churchill, emigrating to Jamaica on a banana boat in pursuit of a boyfriend, then raising a family on the Caribbean island, have made for a colourful and fulfilling life for parishioner IDA MACNEAL Ida was born at East Sheen in 1937 and grew up as a child near Richmond Park in a house that was blown up during World War II, just days after the family had moved to Epsom. She attended St. Paul’s School for Girls in Hammersmith and during her time there was to reach Grade eight on the piano. Her wartime recollections are of being frightened, especially by the sight of doodlebugs flying overhead.

From school she went to work as a PA in London at advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, but in 1958 went to a job based in Hyde Park Gate as a temporary secretary in the home of Sir Winston Churchill. Churchill at the time was in the South of France where he was engaged in setting up a new Cambridge College and Ida reported to Churchill’s Private Secretary, Montague Brown.

After several months in that role, Ida was offered a permanent position with the Churchill private office, but the prospect of going to Chartwell every other weekend, sharing duties with a second secretary, did not hold much appeal, so when the offer of a translator job at Vevey in Switzerland arose on the same day, Ida chose the latter, which allowed her to enjoy skiing in winter and mountain walking in the summer.

Sailing to Jamaica During her 18 months in Switzerland Ida met a young man who was working for Nestle, but was being posted to run the firm’s office in Jamaica. So in 1960 a smitten Ida took a banana boat to the Caribbean to meet up with him, only to realise when she got there that she no longer fancied him!

“Since I had travelled a very long way I decided to stay and to look for a job on the north coast of the island, where the tourist hotels are located. So I managed to get a job in a wonderful hotel in Runaway Bay near Ocho Rios, where I met a charming young Englishman called Lachlan Macneal, who I married in 1962.

“He had lost his father in the war and his mother had decided to settle in a warm country. Lachlan had a colourful and entrepreneurial career, operating Jamaica’s first glass-bottomed boat and then setting up a car rental business covering the whole island and called Hummingbird.”

Ida and Lachlan came back briefly to England for their marriage in East Sheen, before returning to Jamaica to start a family. All three of their children - Fiona, Caroline and James - were born on the island before the family was forced to leave Jamaica in 1973, when the political situation deteriorated, leading to a collapse in tourism that meant disaster for a car rental business.

Returning to England Many schools closed as teachers left, so Ida and Lachlan could not educate their children in Jamaica and bought a house in Kingsley Green. Ida is very proud of her three children, who between them have given her ten grandchildren, singling out her son James, who has recently been promoted to Global Head of Construction & Infrastructure at the giant US insurance broker Aon. He lives in London, while daughter Caroline is at Pewsey in Wiltshire and Fiona lives in Haslemere.

Ida and Lachlan lived in Kingsley Green for 25 years, during which time he became Chairman of the local branch of the National Trust and they attended St. Margaret’s Church in Fernhurst. But when Lachlan died in 1998, Ida moved to Tanner’s Court, making many new friends and starting to attend St. Bart’s Church.

Among the highlights of her 24 years as part of the St. Bart’s community were participation in First Steps, a retreat to Walsingham, a weekly study group and joining a two-week Christian-based cruise around the British Isles, where she struck up a friendship with George Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury.

She moved to Oak Hall - on the site of the former Wisper’s School - in 2018 and, despite the obvious limitations on her mobility, is very happy there: “I watch the Sunday services on Zoom because I can’t attend in person at the moment, but I do go to church coffee mornings and get communion visits to Oak Hall from Chris and Justin, as well calls from Sarah Mulliner, so I am able to keep in touch with the church community.”

Haslemere Cricket Club -The Early Years.

‘Racket and niblick and bladder-filled ball Bow to the bat, to the monarch of all!’

This old song is quoted by Roger Hutchinson in ‘Bygone Haslemere’ by Stanton and Woods in 1914. He continues by saying ‘so sang the poet in the past, and in that time he sang the truth’.

Cricket evolved from the 14th century game Club-ball and there are early references to it being played in Guildford, but no record to being played in Haslemere until the end of the 18th century when a schoolmaster here made bats for his pupils to play.

Several local pieces of ground were levelled early in the 19th century, but in 1868 a permanent site was provided when James Stewart Hodgson levelled ground at Denbigh Park and allowed the club to play there, rent free. He was a local benefactor and his memorial is in St. Bartholomew’s Church. At this time the ground was believed to be ‘the most beautiful in all Surrey or England’.

Roger Hutchinson says ‘that of all games village cricket has succeeded in bringing into intimate friendly relations squire and schoolboy, tradesman and aristocrat, labourer and holiday-maker in a way no other game can possibly do, and in the old days the village cricket club was considered worthy of support by the whole parish as a sort of national institution.’

If we examine the team playing against Shalford on June 29th 1869, we see: J.S. Hodgson Esq., W. Lucas Esq., James Edgeler (saddler), S. Marden (innkeeper), W. Oliver (miller), James Bridger (blacksmith), Thomas Newman (farmer), G. Wardle (carpenter) and W. Maiden (ironmonger).

One club member, W. Barker, was a bookmaker and local preacher who walked from his home in Selbourne regularly to play.

The team quoted contained no members of the clergy, but later records show that many curates were fine batsmen and bowlers and were often club secretaries. The first Rector of Haslemere, Revd. Sanders Etheridge, played, as did Revd. O. Walford and Revd. E. Bray.

Amongst the most famous members of the club were J. Sanders who was born and lived in Haslemere and played for England, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Allen Chandler J.P., local architect and Captain of Surrey (1872).

In 1906 ‘The Gentlemen of Holland’ visited and Haslemere won the match.

In 1893 the club entered The Village Club Competition and won two years running, but bad feelings and protests caused the club to withdraw from further competitions. The Witley Parish magazine said that one of the reasons for this was that part of Thursley parish was situated in East Street (now Petworth Road) in Haslemere.

‘That Haslemere played ineligible there’s not the slightest doubt But Witley, strictly honest, George Bryant did have out.

To settle satisfactorily ‘t would trouble Lincoln’s Inn Where Haslemere’s playing boundary ends and Thursley’s doth begin,’ (Much later this part of Thursley was made part of the parish of Haslemere).

As Roger Hutchinson comments: ‘Long may the grand old game hold its place, bringing men of all sorts together with one aim!’

In My Garden Philip Duly

It is now over a year since I moved to my new garden and I am slowly beginning to understand and appreciate all the plants that I previously had no experience of growing. One area of the garden is a shade garden, the definition of which is a garden with little or no direct sunlight. Shade gardens may occur naturally or by design usually under the shade of other buildings or in the case of my garden, trees. They tend to be ornamental gardens ideally containing plants or shrubs that survive with minimal light.

Within this area of the garden I was fortunate enough to inherit from the previous owner a decent collection of astilbes, this month’s star plant. These hardy rhizomatous flowering perennials are part of the Saxifragaceae family, native to mountain ravines and woodlands in Asia and North America.

They are cultivated for their large fern-like foliage and dense, feathery plumes of flowers. They are widely adapted to shade and water-logged conditions, hence they are particularly associated with pond-side planting. The colourful flowers in various shades of red, pink and white of some astilbe species have a strong and pleasant aroma. They have a long flowering season from July to October but the faded plumes can also look attractive through the winter.

These versatile and reliable plants can be grown in sun as well as shade, in dry or damp conditions and are deserving of a place in your garden, virtually anywhere but particularly in a contemplative garden area with either full or partial shade or only dappled sunlight.

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt Members of the Hopkins Society (devotees of the work of Gerard Manley Hopkins) had a very successful visit to St Bartholomew’s on Saturday 18 June.

There was a series of lectures and presentations in the Church, refreshments and lunch in The Link, and a visit to Hopkins’ family graves in Derby Road churchyard. Some preparation had been required to ensure that the graves were in a viewable state, given the rampant bramble growth in late Spring. It was helpful that Waverley’s contractor had cut the grass the previous week and also ensured the immediate area around the graves was clear. The first two photographs show the graves of Gerard’s father and mother, Manley and Kate, and his sisters, Kate and Grace, in Derby Road churchyard. Gerard’s brother, Lionel, is buried in Weycombe Road churchyard and the opportunity was taken to renovate the grave prior to the visit, as seen in the third photograph

A handful of dedicated volunteers, comprising a short notice working party, made considerable progress in tidying and pruning in the main churchyard at St Bartholomew’s on Saturday 25 June. The work was accelerated by an array of mechanised equipment in the hands of David Simmons (see photo).

A particular overgrown and prominent grave in Derby Road churchyard received a welcome haircut and thanks are due to David Sewell who, for a second time, wielded his trusty loppers in such a hazardous environment! The pictures show the before and after.

As a footnote to ‘No Mow May’, as aired in this column before, it is interesting to record a discussion I had with Waverley’s contractor last month. The supervisor on this occasion clearly had misgivings about it. It was not the principle of encouraging wildlife, biodiversity, etc., with which he disagreed, but the short nature of it. He felt that after encouraging all manner of insects, bees and hopefully wild flowers, after six weeks or less, he was supposed to take a large mower and obliterate it all. This does give food for thought.

What are we doing?

‘An exciting new facility for the whole community of Haslemere’ The Link, a converted former school, is owned by the parish church but is an asset held for the benefit of the whole community. Currently it is underutilised and the room sizes and facilities do not meet existing let alone future needs of our community in Haslemere.

Our research across the town has identified many unmet needs, in all age groups, which we believe an improved Link building could address. To meet those needs we have developed and costed plans for a significantly expanded and refurbished building - “The Link Re-imagined”. Our project team is currently in the process of seeking planning permission and applying for funding from the National Lottery Communities fund - to add to a significant contribution from parish related funds.

My Holiday in…

Bath Linda Stevens I spent a great week in Bath and its surroundings. I stayed in the B&B where I always stay - the Kennard, in Henrietta Street, which dates from 1794 and is close to the famous Great Pulteney Street. I enjoyed the hospitality, including their lovely breakfasts.

While in Bath I visited several museums, including the Holburne, the Postal museum and’ my favourite, the Fashion museum (right).

I attended the 8.00am service at Bath Abbey.

I also took bus trips to Lacock, Wells, Thornbury, Corsham and Bathampton.

I have been to Wells several times over the years.

This time I visited a memorial there to Harry Patch, dubbed in his later years ‘the last fighting Tommy’. A supercentenarian: at the time of his death he was 111 years of age, one month, one week and one day. I spent some time in the Cathedral with its unique clock where figures emerge, including one on horseback, every 15 minutes.

After lunch I visited the Bishop’s Palace Gardens and the Palace. Plenty to see in the Palace, including items associated with the Coronation of HM the Queen, and an art exhibition. The gardens have something of interest most of the year. The next day I visited Lacock, the NT village, where I saw the church and later the abbey, its gardens and cloisters. I enjoyed refreshments at its Dairy, which is now set up as a coffee shop.

I also visited Thornbury; it had been a few years since my last visit. The buses don't serve the High Street, allowing a relaxing scene for pedestrians. Visited the town museum run by volunteers, which is compact, but with plenty of interest.

At the church, a wedding was taking place on the most gorgeous Spring day.

While this was in progress I visited the gardens of the adjacent castle. A haven of peace. Visited the Godly garden which is where the Tudor ladies would go for a gossip. Many monarchs have stayed there over the centuries, including Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn who spent ten days there in 1535 to avoid the plague in Bristol. Ten months later Anne was executed. In the last couple of years the castle became a luxury destination, following a multimillion refurbishment. I returned to the church, slipping in by a side door.

The wedding had finished and the wedding party were outside for Thornbury Castle (Hotel and Restaurant) photos. Seeing the sunflower on the front door, I realized it was possibly a second marriage for both parties.

On another day I visited Corsham Court for the afternoon. It hosts a fine art collection, as well as a good collection of musical instruments. The grounds of the house were lovely and green and I saw and heard the peacocks there. I then had tea at the 16th century ‘Flemish Weavers’ inn before returning to Bath.

The last visit of my holiday was Bathampton, on the outskirts of Bath, where the village church is associated with Admiral Philip of the First Fleet, NSW. I generally enjoyed being in the village with its charming cottages and the Kennet & Avon canal.

The next day I returned home and it was the first time I needed my umbrella throughout the week.

Postcard to the Parish

Greetings from Skara Brae You must go to Scapa Flow said Howard, so much naval history there! So I bought the tour tickets and then Fiona reminded me that she wanted to go to Skara Brae! (We were on a Fred Olsen Cruise around Scotland).

Fiona was right (of course) as there are about 5,000 years more history at Skara Brae in the Orkneys! This is a stone age settlement of 10 houses, exposed by a storm in 1850. The houses have been excavated but not reconstructed so are roofless. They include stone hearths, beds and cupboards.

Older than Stone Henge or the Great Pyramids of Giza the site was occupied from about 3180 BC to 2500 BC. If you haven’t been to the Orkneys add them to your bucket list.

We will be going back!

Five Spice Salmon Stir-Fry This is a quicky easy dish for a busy weekday supper.

The salmon can be marinated in advance making it a quick nutritious meal for all the family.

Cooking time 20 minutes

300g. (11oz.) salmon fillet, skinned 175g. (6oz.) medium egg noodles 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, sliced 1 red pepper, deseeded and finely sliced 2 large carrots, peeled and sliced into batons 100g. (4oz.) frozen peas 200g. (7oz.) bean sprouts Juice of 1 lime Salt Basil leaves, to garnish For the Marinade 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder For the sauce ½ fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) ¾ knob of fresh root ginger, peeled and finely grated 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce Juice of ½ lime Slice the salmon fillet into 1¼ in. squares. Mix the marinade ingredients together in a bowl. Add the salmon squares and toss to coat. Leave to marinate for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile make the sauce. Place the chilli and ginger in a bowl with the soy sauce, chilli sauce and lime juice and mix together.

Cook the noodles in boiling, salted water according to the packet instructions.

Drain and refresh in cold water.

Heat half the oil in a large frying pan or wok over a high heat. Add the salmon with the marinade and carefully toss for 3-4 minutes until just cooked. Remove with a slotted spoon and move to a plate.

Heat the remaining oil in the pan, add the onion, red pepper and carrots and fry over a high heat for 3 minutes. Tip in the peas and cook until thawed. Add the cooked noodles, pour over the sauce and stir fry for 2 minutes.

Return the salmon to the pan, add the bean sprouts and toss for a few minutes until piping hot. Add the lime juice and serve piping hot with a few basil leaves to garnish.

The marinade can be made up to four hours ahead.
