Dear Friends Working on Christmas Day. Of course for me it’s obligatory, and I can well remember being told before my ordination that I’ll never have another Christmas Day off again! Mind you, it’s nothing to complain about because it’s all rather nice, plus I finish in good time to get home for the usual big dinner and look forward to a few days off.

My mother was a maternity nurse when I was a child, and it was a common thing that she would get home on Christmas Day morning or have to leave in the afternoon. Also, my daughter, a paediatric nurse, has her Christmas rota too. For her it’s going to be up all night on the wards! When I eventually flop into bed in the early hours of Christmas Day after midnight communion, she will still be doing the rounds at Great Ormond Street. I recall when my uncle was responsible for broadcasting the ITN News back in the 80s and 90s; his experiences were similar. In fact, just about every regular service we take for granted carries on just the same, perhaps with the exception of the High Street shops and superstores (at least for now).

How often have we heard the call to ‘keep Christmas special’, or ‘remember what Christmas is really about’ from the likes of me. Yes, we know it’s a Christian celebration first and foremost, with a celebration of families, good cheer, and goodwill towards all thrown in. Yet spare a kind thought for the many who will keep your gas and electricity running, who will respond if you call 999, and will keep the system going if you travel along the roads or through the airports. Also remember the poor clergy! I know I gather in all our thanks for these people.

Since the summer this year, from back to when the national Covid restrictions were removed in July, the nation has been getting back to life with considerable 3

energy. I’ve hardly known such a whirlwind of activity. As I write in midNovember my feeling is of a continuous conveyor-belt of ministry. Everyone, it seems, had been waiting for the restrictions to lift. But it’s not just the demands placed upon the church for our traditional services. The busy fever is actually my own fault too. You will hardly have failed to notice my ambition for the health and wellbeing of our churches. Justin and I have been in ‘future vision and project mode’ like no other time before. And it’s all good stuff. We finish the year with our churches, ministry, and future in a healthy state.

This year I am going to adopt the verse ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy.’ That is Luke 2:10. It seems to me to be remarkably apposite, because we may well have things to worry over and we surely want some joyful news. Throughout the Christmas season I’m going to work to unpack this line in my various sermons and services. Have a think about it yourselves.

You will find the layout of the Christmas services in this magazine (on the back inside cover) and on the parish website. Tradition rules the day at Christmas time, and you will find that all proceeds as you might expect. Do please take the opportunity to visit our new High Street Christmas Market stall on Sunday 5 th December, and to vote for your favourite local Christmas window. See the website for all you need to know.

Our churches of St Bartholomew and St Christopher are places of deep welcome to all, throughout the year and most especially at Christmas time. Do join us, and surround yourself, once again, with the beautiful good news that Jesus Christ has come to be with us ordinary folk. It’s my hope and prayer that all who love Christmas will have a splendid festive season, whether you are home and resting, working, or travelling to friends and family.

Light Parties in Haslemere

This year Haslemere Parish, 3 Counties Vineyard and St Stephen’s churches came together to host two Light Parties on Sunday 31st October - to which almost a hundred children attended! The idea was to give children an upbeat alternative to Halloween events, keeping the fun but steering them away from the usual darker themes and narrative. Through numerous fun and engaging activities, the children were able to explore all things light and how Jesus is the light of the world.

At the Children’s Light Party (for school years 1-5), St Bartholomew’s Church was transformed into a twinkling wonderland using fairy lights and candles, creating a truly special atmosphere as well as the amazing glittery costumes worn by all! The children went round in groups to enjoy the various activities which included a competition to see who could eat a doughnut hanging by a string the fastest without using their hands, pumpkin decorating, prayer pass the parcel, sparklers, neon necklace-making, candle jar creations and a reflection corner to name but a few. The children enjoyed a hot food party tea together in their groups as well as a hot chocolate station - which was very popular! The party ended with the group coming together for prizes, a Light video from Scripture Union, prayer and a worship dance! The enthusiasm of the children and volunteers alike was fantastic!

Later the same evening, the Youth Light Party (for school years 6-8) took place in 3 Counties Vineyard Church in Hammer, where once again the space was transformed, but this time into a neon-themed party. Multiple stations were set up for the youth to participate in, such as neon-themed outfits while others simply enjoyed getting creative at the luminous face-painting station. Time was then given for group games, such as glow stick Pictionary and a ‘Ghost Story’ from the bible, after which headsets were donned for a Silent Disco and glow-inthe-dark volley ball! An amazingly memorable evening greatly enjoyed by all!

Youth Light Party We would like to thank all the volunteers and the extreme generosity of many local businesses in Haslemere for their donations towards the Light Parties; the parties were free events and so these donations were all the more precious. A big thank you to: Waitrose, Tesco, The Silent Party, M&S, Hokey Cokey Shop and Bells Butchers.

An amazing effort by all involved and we look forward to putting on many more community events in the near future!

Introducing… Verity Sutherland My name is Verity Sutherland and I am the new Children and Families Worker for Older Children at Haslemere Parish. As many of you know, my role begins properly (even though part-time) in January when my youngest starts a few mornings a week at nursery.

This will free up some valuable time so I can focus on developing the new group for 8-11 year olds and the space we hope to use for it in the upper room of St Christopher’s Church (the work for which has already begun).

However, in preparation, I began the First Timers Course with The Diocese of Guildford in September with the incredible tutor Emma Coy. This year-long training course is for people like me, working as Children and Families or Youth Workers for the first time, and covers all the basics from theology, to how to structure your work, apply practical skills and make site visits around the diocese, amongst many other things. It is proving so valuable and inspiring, and a wonderful foundation for this new role and group. Assisting at Families@4 and church youth events, like the recent Light Parties, has allowed me to start putting this training into practice and a chance to learn from Victoria and Sophie, whilst also getting to know the children, parents and congregation better. I am so thankful to everyone for being so welcoming and supportive as I go through my training and find my feet.

I come from a very different background career-wise, some of which I would like to share with you now. So let me rewind a little further, to give you some more information about who I am and where I come from.

We have been in Haslemere now for just over two years, having moved from Camberley, where we had been staying with my family since moving back from South Africa four years previously. We lived in South Africa for nearly nine 10

years as my husband, Neil, was born there and we wanted to spend time with his family after a long time travelling together. My daughter, Skylar (six years old), was also born in South Africa, but my son, Manoah (two years old), was born just before we arrived in Haslemere. I feel very blessed to have such a wonderful family, and even though the kids keep me very busy, when I do get the chance, I like to indulge in wild swimming, sailing, artwork and generally being a big kid when I can get away with it!

Neil and I often talk about the ‘chapters’ in our lives together as there have been so many very different ones. I met Neil when I was 23 years old (he was just turning 21) in New Zealand. Neil had left South Africa when he was 17 with his closest school friends and they were sailing on the family yacht ‘Big Reef’ (50ft Ketch) around the world. I joined them as a crewmember three years into their six-year trip, having crossed paths with them while waiting for my new visa for Australia where I had been living and working in the media after back-packing through India and Asia. I sailed with Neil and the ever-changing international crew of ‘Big Reef’ for a couple of years through the pacific islands, up Australia to Indonesia and across the Indian Ocean until we completed the trip back to South Africa.

This sailing trip was full of wonder, from swimming with humpback whales and their calves in Tonga, to feasting with chiefs and villagers in Fiji and battling huge storms in the Indian Ocean, woven together by endless starry nights at sea, marked by the most glorious of sunrises and sunsets. When immersed in and at the mercy of untamed nature such as this, it is hard not to feel the presence of God, as you marvel at his creation daily without the distractions of

modern life. It was a journey that changed us all forever. Nevertheless, after a time, even in ‘paradise’ you start to deeply miss your family and friends and feel the need to build something of your own and leave the transient life behind. So we brought the trip to a close once we had returned to where Neil started his trip six years before, Richards Bay South Africa.

Having studied Television Production at Bournemouth University, I worked in wildlife documentary in South Africa, producing, scripting and directing for National Geographic. However, my passion was truly ignited when I managed to start working for globally renowned wildlife filmmakers, conservationists and National Geographic Explorers in Residence, Dereck and Beverly Joubert. With this remarkable couple I went on a journey like never before, working on their award-winning films. I also helped them with their conservation work through Great Plains Conservation and their Foundation, saving Africa’s last wildernesses and the animals that rely on them, from rhino relocations, global education and programs to save Africa’s Big Cats. However, after my daughter was born, we realized we needed to think again about the next chapter in our lives and we decided returning to the UK was just that.

I grew up in Heatherside, Camberley, and on returning, now with a young daughter, we joined their family church services. Then, on moving to Haslemere, Victoria was one of the first mums I met, being that our daughters attended the same Montessori. I remember Victoria telling me about her new role in the church and I started attending Families@4.

When I heard about the new position within the Parish, it kept returning to my mind even though I knew I didn’t have the time yet being that Manoah is still so young. However, it was a call from God, and I knew it in my heart. So, as soon as I opened the door a crack to peek in, the door flung open and everything seemed to flow through in the right direction. Every time I would think of a reason why I was not right for the post, or it wasn’t possible, God removed all obstacles and showed me the way. Reverend Chris has been part of that 12

journey in allowing me to find a way and so what once seemed impossible has been made possible. Now I know I have to trust God and listen to him as he guides me forward.

Earlier this year I read a personal testimony I wrote when I was a teenager and the one line that really struck me was that I said: ‘I feel most myself the closer I am to God.’ He has been my rock and refuge throughout my life, and I want my son, my daughter and all children (and adults) to know that love, that wholeness, that relationship like no other. I hope I can be part of making it possible. I look forward to sharing more details of what I have planned for the older group in the new year!

Church launches consultation on plans to get to net zero carbon in just nine years.

The Church of England is consulting dioceses, cathedrals, national institutions, parishes, schools, and other interested parties on a proposed route map to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

The draft route map suggests how all parts of the Church of England can make changes together, in order to achieve the ambitious target set by General Synod in 2020: to be net zero carbon 20 years ahead of the Government’s targets.

It includes recommendations for building maintenance, heating and the availability of specialist advice for each, setting alongside how the central Church and dioceses can offer support.

The draft net zero carbon route map was written by a sub-committee of the Church of England’s Environmental Working Group, chaired by the Bishop of Selby, Dr John Thomson.

He said: “God’s creation is in crisis, and there is an urgent call to address this at every level of our global community.

“Synod has set an ambitious target. We recognise this will be challenging, however many adaptations can also be made simply and quickly, such as switching to a green energy provider, filling gaps in windows, and changing lightbulbs, all of which can help to reduce energy costs.

“I encourage individuals and communities to engage with these consultation proposals and to think at every level what can be done to be part of the change. We need to safeguard and care for all of God’s creation.”

The Government has committed to a target of net zero carbon by 2050, with an interim target of a 78 per cent reduction, set in April 2021.

Anyone can respond to the consultation online before the closing date of 28 February 2022, with responses particularly requested from Dioceses and Cathedrals.

Beware Raw Sewage If you are thinking of doing any wild swimming dips over the Christmas break, bear this in mind: more than half of England’s major rivers are polluted with raw or partially treated sewage.

This is partly because water companies have been allowed to release raw sewage into rivers and seas as part of a ‘combined sewer overflow’ – a legacy of Britain’s Victorian drainage systems. It has allowed for rainwater and liquid waste to be combined in the same tanks.

This overflow into waterways has acted as an escape valve, stopping floods in homes and streets. The overflow option is meant only for an emergency, but in fact, it took place more than 400,000 times last year.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School In many ways school life has returned to the happy, exciting and vibrant way it was before the pandemic. This is not to say that we have stopped being careful – far from it – but with a renewed understanding of how to keep ourselves safe from infection, we have dived right back into BARTS family life; enjoying working together, attending whole school collective worship sessions and playing more freely at playtimes. In September we welcomed new children into Early Years and classes across the school and they all seem to be settling in well.

The children have enjoyed day visits to support the topics they have been learning about this term. Year 1 had an amazing day at Marwell Zoo (pic left), where they saw a wide variety of animals including meerkats, monkeys, giraffes, penguins, tigers, snow leopards, rhinos and even a sloth.

Year 2 turned into Beachcombers on their trip to West Wittering (right) and were blessed with a perfect day full of sunshine. The children had fun jumping the waves and created pictures using

driftwood, seaweed, shells, rocks and any other natural things they could find on the beach.

Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Mubarak Mosque in Tilford (left) where the children learnt more about the Islam 16

faith. Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the Watercress line where they experienced a train ride through the eyes of war time children and learnt about the role of women in the war, rationing and money during that difficult period of history.

We had an incredible Autumn Fair which was organised by a wonderful group of Year 6 on the Watercress Line parents on our PTA, known as ‘POBs’, who raised over £4000 for the school. It was a lovely afternoon, which included the inaugural Steeplechase and a very impressive and tasty BART’S Bake Off competition for the children which I had the pleasure of judging. We also had wonderful musical performances supported by Music Works.

We celebrated Harvest Festival, where pupils donated produce for the Haslemere Food Bank and, in readiness for Remembrance week, our Year 6 pupil leadership team sold poppies and other merchandise for the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal. (Right) We very much look forward to the end of the Autumn Term when all the children at school will be taking part in their Christmas productions, reminding their families of the true meaning of Christmas.

All these wonderful events and learning opportunities for the children would not take place without a dedicated team of teachers, learning support assistants and parents, along with the support we receive from the church. We are, as always, very grateful to them all for the work that they do.

17th Century Flemish Glass

The Flemish Glass in St Bartholomew's Church Exhibition Flemish painted glass, as seen in these examples from St Bartholomew's Church, Haslemere, had its origin in the 15th and 16th centuries. Early European mediaeval stained-glass of the Gothic period, with its creation of architectural light and atmosphere within a cathedral setting, is in striking contrast to these small painted glass panels which in their depiction of biblical, heraldic, natural or classical subjects could be termed 'easel' art, better able to explore the human complexities of the Renaissance. The panels were produced in the Low Countries by highly regarded draftsmen and artists (influenced by the work of contemporary artists such as the engravings of Albrecht Durer) throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. This is considered to be the golden age of Flemish painted glass which became a luxury product sold across Europe, destined for the windows of public buildings and private houses alike.

Indeed, such glass was itself depicted within the genre paintings of the 17th century Dutch artist Vermeer and his contemporaries.

Trading links in the late 15th century had brought an influx of Flemish art and glaziers to England, but with the political and religious turmoil of the 17th century and its puritanical destruction of English church glass, any such trade would have become difficult. Flemish glass production continued, however, for wealthy clients in the Northern Netherlands into the early 18th century.

England's rediscovery of these panels in the first half of the 18th century was in no small way due to the advocacy of Horace Walpole: his collection of hundreds of historic painted glass panels in the 1750's and '60's filled his 'Gothic' house Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, to jewel-like effect. Agents scoured the Low Countries for these treasures some of which were retrieved from demolished 18

houses. Walpole's enthusiasm helped create a fashion for Flemish glass amongst an aspiring middle class that may well have influenced this Haslemere collector of biblical glass, Thomas Sanderson. Such a collection would have been made, not only for its artistic interest and charm, but out of the piety of the individual, and as a visual aid to religious education within a domestic setting.

St Bartholomew's Church Flemish Glass The Flemish Glass in St Bartholomew's Church is of 17th Century origin. The glass was brought to Haslemere by Mr Thomas Sanderson of Kent who married Mary Shudd of The Lodge (now the site of Haslemere Educational Museum).

Following the death of Sanderson and his wife, the glass was inherited by their daughter Mary Ann and given to St Bartholomew's Church, Haslemere, on or shortly after her marriage in 1797 to the Rev Robert Price.

The panels were placed in the East window as can be seen in this painting by E Hassell in 1828 (above, left). It looks like the Commandments boards were on either side.

The panels were moved to the West Windows when the church was rebuilt in 1870. The Garden of Eden and Noah's Ark were moved to the Bell Tower.

The remaining six panels were placed in the West Window with their frames replaced by a red border (right).

It was a strange place to locate them as the panels are about A4 size and so not easily seen so high up.

The panels were damaged by weather and stones.

Various repairs were attempted over the years.

Similar work was carried out on the panels depicting St John, St Matthew (which had many fractures), St Luke, St Mark and the conversion of Saul (which has wonderful detail). Photos of the restoration process of these panels can be seen on the Haslemere Museum website: https://www.haslemeremuseum.co.uk/whatson/ flemishglass/flemish-glass.html An additional problem was discovered with the panels of the Garden of Eden and Noah's Ark in the Bell Tower - the damaged panels were glued to plain glass to hold them together. The restorer was able to unglue the central pictures but some of the surrounds were so badly splintered it was not possible for them to be un-glued. Note the perspective frames which were retained (see restored panel, right).

The size of the final panels was determined by the way they will be installed in a wooden cabinet.

The Prayer Chapel/Children’s Chapel

The new cabinet will be installed in the children's chapel below the west window.

The panels will be a teaching aid for children's worship.

Note also the low bench, designed for children and given in memory of Anne Bridger in 1931 (of Bridger's band).

The glass panels will be displayed in a custom built cabinet, back-lit with LED (daylight) lighting panels. The two larger panels will line up with the west windows above (see diagram top left). The doors can open for maintenance.

Final Steps Work on constructing the cabinet starts in October 2021. It is hoped that the work will be complete by Christmas. The Annunciation (1895) Henry Ossawa Tanner

The painting features the archangel Gabriel and Mary during the Annunciation.

The event is narrated in Luke 1:26-38, in which Gabriel tells Mary that she will bear Jesus, the Son of God. The artist depicts Gabriel as a column of light without any features, and paints Mary in peasant clothing with no halo.

Tanner (an Afro-American painter who trained in Pennsylvania) portrays Mary with dark hair and Middle Eastern skin tones, not as a blonde woman from Northern Europe as so many prior artists had done. Not being wealthy, Mary would be dressed in the clothes of a poor person and her room would reflect her humble status. She sits on her simple bed with its rumpled sheets, in a room with rough plain walls, and a cobblestone floor. She has almost no possessions, with the exception of a lamp with its low burning flame and a jug, perhaps filled with water. Like William Holman-Hunt before him, Tanner had visited the Holy Land where he had made sketches and drawings which enabled him to lend a great deal of authenticity to his work.

Tanner’s Mary is not the regal queen so often portrayed by Renaissance painters like Leonardo. This poor girl does not even have sandals for her feet. In all of Tanner’s religious paintings, he emphasized the humanity of his subjects.

Moreover, she does not seem afraid. With her hands folded in her lap in prayer, she gazes at the angel with peace and serenity. She seems to listen intently to all that he has to say to her. Here is a young girl who understands God well enough to believe and trust in what he asks of her.

Here is a quote from Jane Williams’ book The Art of Advent (SPCK 2018) to bring this to a conclusion: ‘Advent prepares us for the reality that there is only one story of the world, only one destiny for it, from before all time, and that is for it to find its fulfilment through the Son of God.’ For reflection or discussion: What are you most afraid that God might ask you to be or do?

by Sue Jones Those of you who remember the Jones’s may recall that I was going to compile a cookbook to raise funds for a Youth Project. Ten years on the project doesn’t exist but I have finally completed the book!

It’s a compilation of 100 recipes and stories of people and parishes we have served in over 45 years. Some recipes are from the wonderful cooks of Haslemere. The funds are all for two current projects we are involved with in our second term of interim ministry in Bangkok.

The first is the Noh Bo Academy, a school and boarding home for Karen children on the Thai Burmese Border and three nurseries in the refugee camp there; second is the food distribution program we run at Christ Church Bangkok for 25 refugee families who worship with us.

Thankfully our printing costs have been low in Thailand so I was able to bring 80 books back as samples and our daughter, Laura, will have a print run here too.

If you would like to see and order a copy, Sue Davis and Sara Smith have kindly offered to have them. We are asking a minimum donation of £15 for the books and hope to raise another £6-10K to divide between the two very worthy projects. They make a great Christmas gift.

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes One Christmas Eve, in a church elsewhere, I was coleading the Midnight Service. Sitting at the back was a young couple who had brought their baby with them. Just as the church clock struck twelve, the baby let out a loud cry. Magical! It brought THE Baby well and truly into focus. ‘Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning!’

Save for some sad outcomes - which ‘Call the Midwife’ handles so sensitively - new birth is truly amazing. In the popular sitcom, Del Boy emerged from the delivery room where Raquel had just given birth. “What is it?” called Rodney from the corridor- wanting to know its gender. In awe and wonder, his brother could only reply: “It’s a baby!”

The writer of Psalm 139 marvelled at the pre-natal process: ‘I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God!’ Jesus referred to the agonies and ecstasies of childbirth when preparing the disciples for his departure (John 16): “You will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labour, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.”

In one of our carols, we praise ‘the sacred infant’ who came down ‘to such a world as this’. Ours is a world where an Afghan mother makes the agonising decision to sell her baby daughter - to raise money to feed the rest of her starving family. The money raised would feed them for a few months. And then what……….?

Spotlight on …

Don Cremer For many years he was best known as the husband of Yvonne Cremer, a popular teacher at The Heights Prep School for 27 years from 1970-1996, but 92-year old DON CREMER, a long-time stalwart of St. Bart’s Church, enjoyed a distinguished career in the Royal Navy and at BT.

Early Life Don was born in Mauritius on 8 May 1929 and lived on the island for the first three years of his life while his father worked as Head of the Colonial Audit Department. Ships and the sea were an interest from a very early age, and one of his earliest maritime memories is the return from a family holiday in Brittany at the end of August 1939.

“We realised that war was imminent after hearing that Germany had invaded Poland, so on 1 September 1939 we made our way to St. Malo and escaped that night in total darkness on the deck of a ferry to Southampton. On the day after arriving at our then home in Brockenhurst we went to church (3 September 1939) to learn that Britain was at war with Germany.”

Keen to pursue a naval career, at the age of 13 (December 1942) Don passed the entrance exam and was admitted to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, which had been temporarily relocated from South Devon to Eaton Hall, Chester, the country seat of the Duke of Westminster.

Commander in the Royal Navy That marked the beginning of a 29-year Naval career that saw Don rise to the rank of Commander and took him to the Americas, West Indies, Mediterranean and the Far East in a variety of notable ships.

One of his earliest appointments was aboard HMS Sheffield in 1947-8, when she was based in Bermuda and patrolling the Americas and West Indies. Don returned from Bermuda to the UK in June 1948 aboard the Empire Windrush, which called at Bermuda on her journey from the West Indies carrying the first immigrants to the UK. Among ships in which Don served were the battleship HMS Vanguard, which he joined in 1950 shortly after she had taken the Royal Family to South Africa, the frigate HMS Amethyst in 1952, shortly after the famous Yangtse Incident, and the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious in 1964, the first carrier fitted with an angled deck for safer landing of aircraft.

“Serving in a well-known ship has its drawbacks”, he recalls. “What we did in Amethyst, such as in the Korean War, got reported in the newspapers back home, while similar achievements by other ships were not reported, which made us unpopular.”

A move into telecommunications During his Naval career Don spent a year (1954) specialising in Signals at the Naval Signals School, which used to be near Petersfield, and that paved the way for his later move into civilian life.

While serving as a Commander at the Ministry of Defence in 1969 he decided to seek early retirement from the Navy and, on being told that he must wait two years, used the time to broaden his knowledge of telecommunications and other possibilities.

In 1972 he joined what was then known as Post Office Telecommunications (later BT) as a Principal in the Service Policy Division. “On my first morning I joined a Working Party looking into the future of the Telegram Service. This included Union Representatives and was a useful introduction as to how relations with the Unions worked” he recalls.

Four years later Don was appointed to the Contracts Division, concerned with purchasing and supply for both Post and Telecoms. With large sums of money involved he had to ensure suppliers could do what they claimed, and was conscious that any contract decisions could seriously affect people’s lives.

During those two years he was waiting to leave the Navy Don qualified in what was then known as Personnel Management, which helped with the job that took him to retirement from BT in 1989. This was the supervision of headquarters staff and management of buildings, and included the move of various departments into the new Headquarters Building at St. Paul’s.

Arrival in Haslemere During the late 1950s and early 1960s Don and Yvonne (who had met in Malta and married in the UK in 1956) lived a nomadic existence that took them to places as far afield as Malta, Petersfield and Londonderry. But after the birth of a second daughter in 1963 and signs that house prices would start to rise, they bought their first home, in College Hill Terrace, shortly before Don’s year-long service in HMS Victorious.

Life in retirement The Cremers later moved to a house in Hill Road opposite The Heights school, where Yvonne carried on teaching for a number of years after Don’s retirement from BT in 1989. While she continued teaching, Don used his time to help run a Post Office retirement organisation and completed his education by studying with the Open University and achieving an Honours Degree at the age of 67.

In 2003 Don and Yvonne decided it was time to downsize to a smaller and more manageable house and garden and moved to Oaklands, off Tanners Lane. Sadly they only had a very short time to appreciate their new home together before Yvonne succumbed to pancreatic cancer and died in September 2004.

Serving the church in Haslemere Don has long been an active supporter of St. Bart’s church and held a number of key roles. He has been a sidesman and server, was Stewardship Secretary for ten years from 2007-17 and a Church Warden for five years from 2008-13, during which time the Church Wardens oversaw a complete internal redecoration of the church and successfully managed a year-long interregnum.

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt Most people will probably have used the builders’ merchants, Coomers, at some time or another. Those with longer memories will remember when it was Jesse Mann’s timber mill. A few months ago I was approached by Jesse Mann’s grandson, David Mann, to see if I could locate his grandfather’s grave.

I thought I knew its location in Derby Road churchyard and my records pointed me in the right direction. However, it seemed to have inexplicably disappeared.

This was not the case, of course, but it had so succumbed to the menace of the brambles that it was completely hidden. I sent a photograph to David with apologies for the state of the grave area. We then agreed to jointly try and clear the area after the main growing season.

On Monday 8 November we set to work and I am pleased to report that within a couple of hours, with the aid of a professional hedge cutting device, we had managed to clear the site. Not only had we cleared the Jesse Mann grave, but also five others that had been completely obscured, more like buried, by the enormous blackberry bush. One of these graves was that of a former Rector, Tom McAlister, and his first wife, Jean. This was a moment of considerable celebration and David, as a member of St Nicolas, Cranleigh, was delighted.

This little saga does highlight a particular problem that we have in Derby Road churchyard. Although the grass is cut by Waverley Borough Council’s contractor at the same time as the main churchyard, it is much more overgrown with encroachment from brambles, over large shrubs and unwanted trees. Whereas we do generally manage to keep the main churchyard in reasonable shape through our occasional working parties, the task in Derby Road would involve much heavier work. I consider it to be quite unrealistic for a volunteer force with an average age of well over 70 to be expected to carry out this work. That a grave such as Tom McAlister’s was completely hidden in a 30

mass of brambles should be of considerable concern. It demonstrates just how rapidly a churchyard can decline without maintenance and should serve as a wake up call. We ought now to be considering engaging professional help once or twice a year to tackle the most overgrown areas in Derby Road.

There will be a variety of activities on offer, including gardening, (weather permitting) as well as puzzles, crosswords, arts and crafts and flower arranging.

There will be visits from professionals including Dementia Navigators from the Alzheimer’s Society and local solicitors that can advise on any legal issues. The last Tuesday of the month is a lunch club. Light lunch provided.

Mini Buches de Noel Linda Donaldson

Makes 8 little logs Butter, to grease 5 large eggs 100g. caster sugar 1 tsp. vanilla bean paste 60g. plain flour 40g. cocoa powder

For the ganache: 150g. dark chocolate, chopped 150g. milk chocolate, chopped 300ml. double cream

For the filling: 150ml. double cream ½ tbsp. Cointreau 1 tbsp. icing sugar Finely grated zest ½ orange

To decorate: 8 chocolate orange segments Orange zest

Preheat the oven to 180 deg. (160 fan), mark 4. Grease and line a 23 x 33cm.

Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Using a mixer or a large bowl and a handheld electric whisk, beat the eggs and caster sugar together until extremely thick, about 5 min. Beat in the vanilla.

Sift over the flour and cocoa powder, then gently fold in using a large metal spoon. Scrape into prepared tin and gently spread to level the top. Bake for 15 min. or until sponge is firm to the touch.

Lay a piece of baking parchment on a wire rack and carefully invert the sponge on to it. Remove the tin and gently peel away the top lining parchment.

Using kitchen scissors, slice sponge and base parchment in half lengthways. Using the base parchment to help and starting from the long edge, tightly roll up the sponge halves separately, leaving them seam-down to cool completely on the wire rack.

Meanwhile make the ganache. Put both chocolates into a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a small pan until almost boiling. Pour into the chocolate bowl, leave for 2 mins., then stir until melted and smooth. Set aside to cool and firm up to a spreadable consistency.

Make the filling: Whisk cream, Cointreau and icing sugar to firm peaks. zest. Chill until needed.

Fold in the orange

Once cool, gently unroll both sponges and spread ½ the filling over each. Reroll and cut each into quarters to make 8 mini roulades.

Transfer to a large board and spread ganache over each using a palette knife. Gently pull a fork or cocktail stick through each one to resemble bark. Decorate with chocolate orange segments and zest. Chill for 30 mins.

Brandy Ice Cream This ice cream does not need a second whisking, so is very quick and easy. It is very good with mince pies and delicious with Christmas pudding instead of brandy butter.

4 eggs, separated 100g. caster sugar 300ml. (1/2 pint) double cream 4 tbsp. brandy Whisk the egg whites on fast speed, using an electric hand-held whisk, until light and stiff. Beat in the sugar, still on a fast speed, a little at a time until you have a thick glossy meringue. Fold in the egg yolks.

Whisk the cream and brandy together until thick. Fold into the meringue mixture.

Freeze in a flat polythene box overnight, for at least 12 hours.

Eat and enjoy!

In My Garden Philip Duly Autumn 2021 provided many dry and sunny days to enjoy our gardens with the leaves very late to fall, giving a prolonged display of wonderful autumn colour, and many herbaceous perennials continuing to flower beyond mid-November.

One of the joys of moving to a property with a mature garden is the wonderful discoveries that reveal themselves during the first year of residing at a new address. I have recently found several clumps of Hesperantha coccinea Major, commonly known as the river lily or crimson flag lily, hiding away in some quiet corners of the garden.

My choice for this month’s star plant is this fantastic autumn-flowerer, bearing delicate scarlet red flowers when much of the rest of the garden is slowly dying back. The plants are members of the iris family but resemble small clumps of fragile gladioli with long thin foliage and upright flower-spikes, each topped by several flowers resembling a wide open crocus.

They are native to South Africa and Zimbabwe and accordingly seem to prefer full sun as the clumps that are in the more shady areas of the garden have produced fewer flowers although their foliage is attractive even without blooms. Numerous cultivars are available with the salmon-pink Sunrise and mid-pink Jennifer among the easiest to find to purchase. The latter was the name of the previous owner of the garden who clearly loved it very much, along with lilies of every kind.

Whenever I see these pretty plants I like to think her spirit is alive in the garden.

Tribute to Audrey Hemingway Kings World Trust for Children owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Audrey Hemingway. She was an inspiration to us all through her kindness and generosity from the start of the charity in Haslemere in 1995. One of our founder donors and child sponsors, Audrey was a proactive, energetic and wise Trustee. She visited India and her experience there gave her a strong commitment to continue and increase her support for Indian children who were poor, handicapped or disadvantaged.

Then, to our complete surprise, Audrey left a legacy to Kings in her will. The granite seat we have built will be a lasting and living memorial to Audrey. It will be used by generations of Kings children to watch sports and the sapling tree will, in time, provide shelter from the sun for those sitting beneath it.

Thank you very much indeed Audrey, you will be remembered forever by everyone at Kings in India.

Update on Kings World Trust for Children and Kings Schools The pandemic which has ravaged the globe has also had significant consequences in India. Much of India, including schools and colleges, went into lockdown on 16th March 2020 and has remained closed until today, 2nd November 2021. Kings Schools were closed for 20 months and this has caused severe disruption to the education of Kings students who normally attend our schools, and to our ‘outreach students’ who attend external schools and colleges.

Kings Schools quickly went online and started teaching on Zoom and within six weeks we were teaching all Kings students online. Our initial challenge was ensuring all students, especially those from very low income families, had a phone, tablet or computer so they could attend these classes. We put out an appeal to our regular donors in the UK and within a short space of time Kings was able to provide devices to all who needed them. Thank you very much indeed to all who supported our appeal.

A number of our students, staff and parents have been affected by Covid and we were all deeply saddened by the loss of three Kings parents to the virus.

India has only vaccinated about 30% of the 1.3 billion population so there is a long way to go. There are no current plans to vaccinate school children. Kings Schools, like UK schools, have put strict measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

The pandemic has caused financial challenges for both Kings Schools and Kings World Trust for Children. On Government instructions, schools were only 38

permitted to collect nominal fees from fee-paying parents for online classes.

With this very reduced income we still had to pay teachers’ salaries and all our existing running costs and overheads and additionally support the 30% of Kings students who are on bursaries. For the Trust in the UK, a number of our regular child sponsors have been unable to continue their sponsorships due to loss of income during the pandemic.

School closure has enabled us to get up to date on our maintenance programme and to complete the new extension block for our CBSE school.

During lockdown, many schools and colleges failed to provide any online classes for their students. This has affected many of our Kings outreach children and especially those attending government schools and government colleges. We have maintained contact with the students and encouraged them to study at home and attend the many classes provided by TV stations and other media organisations.

Now schools and colleges have reopened, I hope we will have more to report in the future than during the last 20 months.

I take the magazine to Oak Hall so that I can read it to Ray, which he really enjoys and it keeps him in touch with everyone at Church.

I’ve been meaning to write to you for ages to praise you for the October/ November Link magazine. It’s always good but this edition seemed to have so many articles of interest and lovely photos of celebrations for special people in the parish. Of course, the most amazing article was about the connections with friends and family in Mexico City, such an unbelievable coincidence.

No, I haven’t seen one before. I’ve just finished reading it, and noted you are the Magazine Secretary, for which I congratulate you on the lively content!

I was fascinated to read about the history of Lea Park / Witley Park, especially as I had been on a walk there a few months ago, when my friend showed me the white star on the gate posts, and their significance. I’ll copy it to her. I have walked to the Temple of the Four Winds.

The Seafood Gratin looks tempting, as does the Lemon Almond cake.
