Dear Friends A few Sundays back I mentioned in a sermon that I keep finding I’m turning into a grumpy old man (poor old soul I am at 52)! Of course, everyone gains many important and profound insights from all I preach (don’t you?), but that comment got me quite a lot of humorous feedback! Thankfully, most thought I was a jolly old soul not a grumpy one.

Everything in the world seems topsy-turvy again. Just when I was hoping for a bit of routine normality for a while, then comes another global crisis, more Covid or the dire predictions of global warming. Nothing seems to be quite what it should be at the moment and you may feel joy is in short supply. The war in Ukraine is a horrible mess, around which we seem so limited in being able to do anything about. Trying to hold it all in some sort of order, where God’s presence makes sense, is quite impossible. I’m just glad I’m not a bishop.

On numerous occasions this last year I’ve seen the delight that childbirth can bring to parents and grandparents. It is a beautiful thing to behold. At the same time (often literally that same day) I may also be near to those who are in the depths of grief. As Justin will also tell you, it’s makes for quite a job as a clergyman to switch one’s brain between such wildly differing emotions. But as usual, God has got there first. The extremes of life, with all its global issues, war, fuel cost crises, moral contradictions and mysteries, all seems to match the chaos of Easter perfectly.

Easter is a major Christian festival where Heaven meets Earth. If that sounds a bit dramatic, then it is, just like the events of Jesus’ time as we remember from the gospels. We are reminded of the almost incomprehensible journey from unspeakable suffering and death to the joys of new life in the space of just three days. What is also difficult to imagine is quite why God planned it this way 3

way (which he certainly did). The two previous years of Covid had left us with rather truncated versions of Holy Week and Easter, or no Easter at all. Despite being now Rector for more than two-and-a-half years, finally I’m able to plan for Easter 2022 in the confidence that it can all happen.

I’m sure we all deserve a bit of normal simplicity, which is why I’ve tried to lay out an Easter pattern for the church that is much like you would have expected from previous years. There is no radical reshape of the festival - the familiar story of Easter is simply what we all need to soak up the volatile shape of the world. I have been reminded recently of the comforting truth which I hear myself so often telling others, that whatever happens God can handle it all. How often do I get into a grumpy stupor because I can’t control everything? I need Easter, I’m sure we all do.

Every ten years, Rectors and Vicars are allowed to take a period of study leave, more commonly known as a sabbatical. From mid-May until the end of June I’m going to be taking a month of study leave, followed by two weeks of holiday. Part of that is a tour of the Highlands of Scotland, into the more remote areas and islands. I’ve often found that a bit of wilderness and wide horizons are very spiritually cleansing. It’s been an incredibly busy time in the parish since last summer, and I think I could do with getting a bit of Godly perspective before leading onwards into the future.

Sophie’s Bubbles!

This year for her birthday, rather than presents, Sophie asked if people could donate money towards the purchase of a large freestanding bubble tube for children to enjoy! Bubble tubes are wonderful sensory items that children (and adults) can sit and watch as the colours gently change and the bubbles rise up. The bubble tube can be used across all of our children’s groups and will be a fantastic asset!

Bonus for First Steps Donations exceeded Sophie’s expectations, meaning that not only could the bubble tube be bought but also numerous items for our First Steps toddler group! We have been able to replace a number of our old plastic toys with wooden ones as well as additional educational and sensory pieces.

As soon as the bubble machine arrives, we will post the photographs. Many thanks to all who have donated and for the wonderful continued support that we receive with First Steps and all of our children’s activities.

Our amazing volunteers help us to provide God's love to the many children who attend First Steps.

Numbers are continually growing - this term we had one Sophie’s birthday party at First Steps* session when 31 children attended which is a First Steps record! We are receiving a lot of positive feedback from parents, expressing that First Steps has a welcoming, caring and kind atmosphere. Four Acolytes receive their First Communion Submitted by Verity Sutherland Each year there is a special time when a number of the children from within the church community take a couple of evenings to learn all about the worship of the church and the holy communion before receiving the Eucharist for the first time during a special service. This year on the 20th February, four of our young acolytes, Maclaren and Maison Feliati, and Yasmin and Phoebe Ingram, did exactly this. Smartly-dressed in blue and white, they gave their promises and received their First Communion at St Bartholomew’s Church. In the lead up to this special event, they undertook two preparation evenings during which they looked at where the Holy Communion came from, what we have now, and what it means to Christians, including a session in St Christopher’s where they looked at the more practical side of Holy Communion and what to expect on their First Communion Sunday.

Family, godparents and friends of the acolytes gathered together with the congregation, to witness and celebrate this important event and support them as they continue their journey with God. On behalf of Haslemere Parish they were each gifted a decorative cross to treasure and remind them of their promises to God and his love for them.

Introducing Haslemere Parish Junior Choir The 22nd February marked the dawning of a new era in music-making at Haslemere Parish, as seventeen excited children poured into St Bartholomew’s Church and squeezed into the choir stalls, brimming with anticipation for the first of many weekly choir practices.

Director of Music, Clive Osgood and Revd Chris Bessant have a vision that the new Junior Choir will enhance the worship of the whole church. As Revd. Chris says, “There is something deeply spiritual about watching and hearing children sing.” Naturally, the choir families will also be welcomed into the church and we intend to provide many opportunities for them to become involved in the church community.

Across the Church of England there are still centres of excellence to be found where both traditional and contemporary choral music remain as established as they have been for centuries. It is a sad reality that this tradition is not always accessible to the vast majority of children and most will never experience the spiritual joy of participating in choral worship. However, there is no reason why this should not be possible in our community. We are very fortunate to have St Bartholomew’s Church of England Primary School on our doorstep, which has a very strong musical tradition headed by Sally Hollyer (Music Lead). We are delighted that Sally has joined the team as Junior Choir accompanist. I shall be the administrator for the choir, alongside my role as Manager of Farnham Youth Choir.

The choral cohort comprises mainly of boys and girls from years 3-6 in St Bartholomew’s Primary School, but the ambition is to widen our reach within Haslemere and possibly open up the opportunity to teenagers as well at some point in the future. At the moment the choir has been preparing to sing in the Mothering Sunday service at St Christopher’s Church on 27th March. Next term Clive and Sally will embark on a programme of musical tuition, enabling the choristers to sing regularly during Evensong at St Christopher’s Church. We are 7

expecting hard work and commitment from our young people, but they will be rewarded for their efforts with termly pocket money. They will also be able to progress through various stages within the choir, both musically and developmentally, earning recognition for things such as singing a solo, or looking after others in the choir. Singing in the Junior Choir will be a team effort but it is also a nurturing environment where the children can enjoy themselves whilst thriving socially, spiritually and of course, musically.

Welcome to The Den! We like The Den because we can make new friends, learn new things, help people, spread the Word for people and have fun…….please can I go to the Church everyday?.....I like The Den because it’s learning with your friends about God….I really enjoy meeting new people…..I enjoy it as I know I am going to be helping people in the community These are some of the comments made by children attending The Den, our new youth group for 8 - 12 yearolds, which opened its doors at St Christopher’s on Wednesday 2nd March, led by Verity Sutherland and her team. At the time of writing, there have been three well-attended sessions. The launch was great fun with balloon volleyball, pancake races, eating pizza* and drinking hot chocolate* as well as getting to know one another. We talked about Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, and Lent, ending with the children writing down their prayers on pieces of paper to be burnt with the palm crosses outside.

The second Wednesday saw the children enthusiastically making name badges and decorating mugs with things that ‘fill them up’/’make them happy’. The focus that evening was Palm Sunday and the significance of the donkey in the story.

A short re-enactment of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem was followed by a discussion on how Jesus would have felt with the great crowds of people cheering him. The children wrote personal prayers on cut out palm leaves.

On 16th March there was an exciting visit to the Cats Protection Adoption Centre in Haslemere.

We have several cat lovers in the group, and everyone enjoyed a special talk by Laura Williams from the team who told us about the important work they do, and stories of the cats rescued. This was followed by a quiz about reading the body language of a cat. The children had a fantastic time and were able to stroke and play with some of the cats. Our trainee youth worker, Rhys, even put in an application to adopt a cat called ‘Buddy’ straight after the visit! Tree-Planting Ceremony At St Christopher’s Green

Thursday 27th January was Holocaust Memorial Day. It was also the 80th anniversary of the Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR).

To mark their anniversary the AJR decided to plant 80 trees in different areas of the country to celebrate the help that those areas gave to the refugees.

Sadly, I think it has now become a little known fact that Haslemere was an important part of their history, having run a refugee school at Stoatley Rough, right at the top of Farnham Lane, past the Royal School. Therefore the Mayor, Simon Dear, asked Rabbi Alex Goldberg, Karen Diamond (representing the AJR), and myself (as I knew a little history of the School, since Lucy and I now live in what 12

was part of it) to say a few words at the planting of an oak sapling on St. Christopher's Green (see plaque, right).

In 1933 the first Jewish refugees were starting to arrive in Britain, one of whom was a teacher Dr. Hilde Lion. Through a mixture of determination and luck, she teamed up with a British refugee group, led

by Quaker Miss Bertha Bracey, which was concerned with the plight of German-Jewish children and the idea for a school started to take shape.

It was through this refugee group that Hilde met Mrs. Marjorie Vernon who had an estate in Haslemere, among others, called Stoatley Rough. Marjorie was very impressed with both Hilde and her ideas and in an incredible act of generosity handed over her whole Haslemere estate. Stoatley Rough School was founded in 1934 and before long Hilde had been joined by Dr. Emmy Wolff.

As the Nazi persecution became worse, more and more German and Austrian Jewish children arrived. These children, usually alone but sometimes with siblings, had been sent away by their parents for their safety, and very safe they were.

Despite struggling against constant money problems, wartime deprivation and an unfamiliar language, the children for the most part had a childhood that they looked back on very fondly. Haslemere was very welcoming to this group of strangers that spoke and sounded like the enemy they were fighting. There were, of course, some exceptions; somethings never change.

Lucy and I now live in a small part of that building and up until a few years ago, we would receive visits from those same children, now in their 70s and 80s, making a pilgrimage back to the school that both saved and gave them their lives. Our house has a balcony and it was incredibly moving when we were told that it was on the balcony that some of the lucky children would read their 13

letters from home delivered by the Red Cross…..that is until the letters stopped coming.

Doctors Lion and Wolff were joined by a music teacher, Mrs. Fox, prompting one pupil to write a poem which started ‘I went to school in a forest, where I was taught by a lion, a wolf and a fox!’

They believed in a communal philosophy where everyone shared work, students and staff alike. By requiring the children to take part in running their own school, Hilde and Emmy gave the displaced children a sense of purpose and security.

All these pilgrims had their own stories to tell, but the daily routines, strict boundaries, healthy exercise of the daily run, coupled with kindness and love, gave them the security that they so desperately craved. That is not to say there were not emotional meltdowns - of course there were many, but within the strictness was an underlying compassion that came from two Jewish German ladies who were themselves refugees.

However, these were resilient children and often spoke of fun, mischief, pranks and discovering that the opposite sex were not quite as yucky as they originally thought - there were at least two marriages that came from the school. One such was Hans who left the School before the war to be reunited with his family in Boston, but who had already fallen in love with Herta, Hilde’s secretary. Six years later he was part of the US army releasing prisoners from the concentration camps.

They were also given licence to roam on Hindhead Common to explore and the boys particularly loved going to Gibbet Hill and watching the RAF and Messerschmitts dog fight in the Battle of Britain. But the overriding sense is one of fondness. One gentleman, Richard, always kept his Haslemere bank account, so that every month he would receive a letter from Haslemere, even if it was just a bank statement!

Barbara Wolfenden, an American lady who wrote their stories in the book ‘Little Holocaust Survivors,’ said “this is a story of an old manor house, sturdy and steadfast…. symbolic of England itself, which although under siege, found a way to offer safe haven and so much that cannot be articulated, to stranded and desperate children.”

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt In the February/March magazine, I outlined the local work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and highlighted the CWGC graves in our churchyards. It transpires that there were some glaring omissions from my list of the fallen, which I must now rectify.

Alison George (the local CWGC volunteer) has sent me a comprehensive list of the graves in her care. There are two private war graves in St Bartholomew’s main churchyard close to the Derby Road boundary, on the west side. These do not bear the familiar CGWC headstone - hence I missed them! However, they are still maintained by Alison. The first is to Pilot Officer Geoffrey Holt (Photo A) and the second to Private Douglas Cullen (Photo B). In Derby Road churchyard, for the same reason, I should have included the grave of Corporal Sidney Miles (Photo C) who was killed in 1917. I was aware of the grave but did not realise that the CWGC were now looking after it. The last omission is entirely mine - I somehow overlooked the grave of Gunner William Brooker (Photo D), who lost his life in 1943 and has a CWGC headstone in Weycombe Road churchyard. (See photos on next page).

On Tuesday 1 March, Waverley’s Tree Officer planted three young oak trees in Weycombe Road churchyard, kindly donated by him. Two of the trees lead down to the railway (see photo). The third tree has been planted to the left of the path leading from the gate. I am most grateful to Geoff Martin who, in my absence in Puerto Rico, very kindly dug two of the holes personally prior to planting. We shall need to keep a close on eye on them.

Still on the subject of trees, there has been activity in St Christopher’s garden too.

Thanks to the generosity of Leightons Opticians (across the road from the Church) a young Japanese flowering cherry tree (prunus okame) has been planted in the garden, in the area before the memorial wall. The planting was a joint effort between Ken Griffiths, Lynda Skeldon (Practice Manager at Leightons) and Richard Reincke. This was a happy conclusion not only for Leightons, who had long wanted to plant a tree for the local community and the environment, but also for St Christopher’s, as it replaces a replaces a tree that was lost.

Ukrainians turn to the Bible for hope Ukrainians turn to the Bible for hope. Despite the war in Ukraine, Bible mission there not only continues, but has expanded.

The Bible Society leader in Ukraine, Oleksandr (pronounced Alexander), says that people fearing for their own lives and the lives of loved ones are turning to the Lord in ever greater numbers. From Kyiv he said this: “Churches are filled with people wanting to pray and find comfort. People call us and visit daily, desperate to get Bibles. But our stock for the entire year is almost gone. People are taking whatever we have. One pastor pleaded for Bibles that were damaged or even copies with pages missing.” Oleksandr added that the Bible Society team in Kyiv has been given a special military pass to travel around the city to distribute basic aid and Scriptures. He sent us a video of him in the back of a van packed with children’s Scriptures. He describes the Bible worker at the vehicle’s wheel as a hero, as he risks his life driving through streets delivering Bibles.

Other Bible Society workers are in southern Ukraine, delivering Scriptures and basic aid to people in hospitals and bomb shelters. As missiles explode around them these people clutch Scriptures just handed to them. Through God’s word they find strength and hope.

The words of Psalm 31 have become a mantra for Ukrainian people: ‘Terror on every side!

They conspire against me and plot to take my life. But I trust in you, Lord. I say, “You are my God.”’ (verses 13–14, NIV).

The Bible Society team in Ukraine thank you for your prayers. Please pray the fighting will end soon and that more people will find hope through the Scriptures. There are many agencies providing humanitarian aid, which is so important. But for Scriptures, people in Ukraine are relying on the generosity of Bible Society supporters. Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes Arriving early for a Service in Portsmouth, I had time for a cuppa. Near the Cathedral was an old-world inn. As I stood in the queue for coffee, I noticed the pictures on the wall. In keeping with the place, they were old-world too. I was quite taken by one of them. It showed a ship that was about to sink, and a lifeboat ready to receive its passengers. On the ship was a sailor, who had clearly urged a little girl to jump. In the lifeboat stood a crew member, with arms outstretched to catch her. The focus is on the little girl, suspended in mid -air. She’s had the courage to jump - but would she end up in the sea, or in the lifeboat? Somehow, you know she’ll make the lifeboat.

The picture sometimes comes to mind when I’m watching ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ as does the story of Tony Bullimore, whose yacht came to grief in the Southern Ocean. All attempts to save himself had failed. Entombed, and with the water rising ever higher, he knew that death was near. But, all unknown to him, a massive rescue operation was taking place. A journalist wrote: ‘Central to it all was the spectre of one man freezing or starving or suffocating on the high seas.’ Bullimore’s first words were: "Thank God. It's a miracle." and later wrote: ‘From a dark, wet and lonely place, I’ve been reborn.’

I see in the picture and in the story, an illustration of the human condition. In God’s sight, each one of us needs saving - and Jesus came into the world ‘to save his people from their sins’ . Rescuers may risk their own life to save another’s. Jesus laid down his life to save us all.

How may such salvation be appropriated? It’s a matter of trust - as expressed by the hymnwriter Frances Ridley Havergal: ‘I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, Trusting only Thee; Trusting Thee for full salvation, Great and free.’

Passover Meal A Celebration of the Last Supper Wednesday 13th April, 7:30pm St Christopher’s Church We are pleased to be able to get together as a church family and once again to have a Passover meal in Holy Week. We are going back to the time of Moses, as he prepared to lead the people of God out of captivity in Egypt into the promised land of Israel. This was such an important event in the history of the Jewish nation and in the history of God’s dealings with mankind that it was commanded to be kept every year as a reminder of the salvation that only God can bring.

When Jesus sat down with his disciple for the Last Supper, this is what they celebrated.

You can read the story of the Passover in Exodus Chapter 12. Our meal at St Christopher’s Church will be a more leisurely affair than that first Passover, because we are not eating in a hurry with overcoats on, belts buckled about us, and with a staff in our hand for a long journey.

Roast lamb, couscous, flat bread, bitter herbs, charoset paste and, most importantly, wine will all be provided. We ask if some of those attending will bring along some cold salads and/or puddings for sharing.

In My Garden Philip Duly

If you are collating a quiz and desire a question that will astonish and perplex your audience, ask for the name of the national flower of France. This is because there are officially two correct answers. The Iris, this month’s star plant, was used by the ancient royal family as their emblem for centuries.

In a religious sense, the three petals of the iris symbolize the Trinity. Yet in French, this is called ‘fleur-de-lis’ or ‘fleur-de-lys’, meaning ‘flower of the lily’.

Even the golden emblem of fleur-de-lis looks like a three-petal lily. So, why is the iris called ‘flower of lily’ in French? It may be a wonderful mistake: the three -petal iris on royal emblems looks pretty similar to the lily. Moreover, Louis VII of France loved the iris most. He officialised the flower as the exclusive royal decoration by wearing a blue robe with golden irises on his coronation. Because he favoured the iris, the flower was called ‘the flower of Louis’ (fleur-de-loys) in his time, which sounded like ‘the flower of lily’ (fleur-de-lys) in French. This might have caused the confusion, which persists to this day.

In my new garden, I am fortunate to have inherited many of my favourite variety, the tall, bearded iris. Although mine are predominantly white, I intend to add to these as this type of iris is available in so many natural but unique colour combinations. They are not so easy to establish however as they prefer a sunny, warm and generally south-facing situation. Their rhizomes must be left exposed to allow the sun to bake and create the flower cells to ensure good flowering the following year. There are many reasons why irises fail to flower including lack of sun, too much moisture and too little attention, but they are definitely worth persevering with as a visit to any French chateau will testify.

Use every bit of the chicken!

This month I thought I would send you my mother’s recipe for using up leftover chicken. I have used this recipe nearly every week of my married life and my husband still loves it!

Firstly, to make the stock, remove all the flesh from the cooked chicken, wrap and put in the fridge until needed. Put the carcass in a large saucepan and cover with water. Add several black peppercorns, a carrot and a small onion. Cover and boil for at least an hour.

Ingredients: 2 tblsp. olive oil 1 large onion, sliced 2 tblsp. curry powder (I use mild powder, but, of course, you can use any strength) 1 dessert apple (cored, peeled and sliced) 2 oz. plain flour Chicken stock - approx. 1 pint A handful of sultanas 2 tblsp. redcurrant jelly Juice of half a lemon Cooked chicken Salt and pepper Crusty bread, cut into chunks, to serve Method: Melt the olive oil in a large saucepan and add the sliced onion. Fry for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the curry powder and continue frying for several minutes. Stir frequently so that it does not stick. Add the apple and allow to cook for a few minutes. Add the flour and stir frequently until smooth.

Next add the chicken stock (probably about 1 pint, but add more if required) and stir. Leave to cook for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the sultanas, red currant jelly and lemon juice and stir until well mixed. Cook for about another 10 minutes.

Lastly add the chicken and cook until it is cooked through.

Eat with rice either packet, frozen or dried, and enjoy!

A Picture for Easter:

Stanley Spencer’s THE CRUCIFIXION (1958)

The picture was inspired by a mound of rubble from pipe repairs in Cookham High Street, Spencer’s long-term home. It is transformed into a Calvary, level with the upper windows of the neighbouring houses from which their inhabitants get a ‘ringside’ seat.

The crosses are arranged in a circle with Christ, seen from behind, possibly facing abuse from one of the thieves, and the sadistic pleasure of the executioners driving home nails with demonic fury. The spectator is invited to experience the full force of this verbal and physical assault from the victim’s point of view.

The horror of the second thief’s face heightens the theme of suffering and terror, despite it occurring in a familiar setting like a village high street. I draw a parallel between street settings in some of the Ukrainian war pictures where terror invades the familiar, brought into our homes by 24-hour news.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is distraught at the cruelty of the scene. Spencer closely identified with Christ’s suffering. ‘The Crucifixion’ was his last major painting before dying in the same year of stomach cancer.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School

Farewell from the Head Teacher I have been at St Bart's school since 19 April 2006 when I joined as a member of the senior leadership team and a Year 3 class teacher. In those days I had the rather challenging task of leading two core subjects, English and Maths, at a time when the Department for Education introduced new national frameworks in both subjects. The school grew from strength to strength over the years and in 2010 was awarded the outstanding badge by Ofsted. Soon after this, in September 2011, I was appointed as Acting Headteacher following the departure of my predecessor, Paul Beach, who moved to Singapore with his young family. Although there were times when I felt I had jumped in at the deep end, I grew to love leading the school and was delighted to be appointed as the substantive Headteacher in February 2012. Shortly after this, the school went through an expansion programme to cater for the increase in pupil numbers in the Haslemere area and we found ourselves with 420 children on roll as a two form-entry all-through primary school. We had new teaching spaces, an enlarged hall and many exciting technological upgrades to support the change in size and provision. Since 2013, I have led the school through three very successful Ofsted inspections and an equally successful statutory inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools.

I was brought up in Haslemere so leading a school in my home town has always been very special to me. I have enjoyed joining in with community events from the Fringe Festival to the Haslemere Scarecrows, Hogs, Hens etc as well as carol 28

singing for the elderly and cooking at the Haslemere Festival. St Bart's is such an excellent school and the hard-working staff and wonderful children achieve well in all areas from reading, writing and mathematics to sport and music. My favourite memory will always be working with the school choir and CRC Records to record and release our own album of 17 songs - Pop or Not (a reimagination of a collection of songs by Whyte Horses) which we also performed at the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall.

It is with mixed emotions that I will be saying farewell to St Bart's on 1 April and joining the Edward Bryant School in Bognor Regis, which is just down the road from our new family home in Chichester. I will never forget the wonderful children, families, staff, governors and local people of Haslemere I have had the good fortune to meet and engage with over the last sixteen years.

Rev. Graham Hawkett (1920 - 2022).

Taken from the eulogy at Graham’s funeral given by Dr John Graham, son-inlaw, who says: ‘Helen and David have spoken lovingly of their father and enabled me to write this appreciation of him.’

The Hawketts had lived in Surrey for generations, mainly butchers and bakers.

Graham’s father, Charles, married Nellie Maidment and they had a son, Geoff, in 1913. Charles served in the Great War from 1914-1918 and after the War, in 1920, Graham was born. The family lived in a two-storey cottage in Spencer Road, Cobham. Graham went to the local primary school where the Headmaster spotted his potential and helped Graham to win a scholarship to Guildford With his card from the Queen on his 100th birthday Grammar School.

He passed the School Certificate, left school at 17 years of age and went to work with an insurance company in the City.

He was almost 19 when the Second World War broke out and he joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Supplementary Reserve where he trained as a navigator on Swordfish, a biplane with open cockpits which sometimes flew off aircraft carriers. He was sent to Trinidad for six months to get some flying experience and then served in Eglinton in Northern Ireland and off the Belgian coast where he patrolled and looked out for enemy submarines.

In the latter stages of the war, he was posted to Wales where life was more relaxed. There he met Louise Everett, a WREN. She was an artist, like her mother before her, and she and Graham shared an appreciation of poetry.

They were married in Prestbury in 1947 and settled in Twickenham near Louise’s family home and where her grandfather had been the first Charter Mayor. Two years later, in 1949, David was born to be followed in 1951 by Helen.

Housing was scarce after the war and they were fortunate to find accommodation on the Green in Twickenham where the children spent their early years. Graham worked as an exporter to South America and in 1955 got a job as a technical representative for a paint manufacturer.

In 1961, Graham decided to train for the ministry and went to Theological College. It was a difficult period for the family as he was away so much of the time and they were glad when he was ordained in 1963 and went to Farncombe as a curate. In 1967 he was appointed to the incumbency of St Mark’s, Wyke, Normandy where he remained until his retirement in 1985. During his twenty two years with the parish he became a much-respected leader of the local community.

Graham and Louise enjoyed their retirement in Haslemere despite Louise’s failing health in later years. She passed away after a short illness in 2000 and Graham lived on in Beech Road for another twenty years. He continued to take services in St Bartholomew’s until he was well into his nineties.

Louise with a portrait she So how might we describe him? A loyal and painted of Graham loving husband for 52 years; punctual, tidy, moderate and self-disciplined. He knew his own mind, wouldn’t be pushed around, was steadfast - obstinate, some might say. He took an interest in people, took the trouble to remember things about them. He was quick-witted, such as when David was going to help one of his single women friends by fitting a blind in her kitchen: “Sounds like a blind date” Graham said.

Graham and Louise had a wide circle of loyal friends whom they valued; Louise’s family in Virginia, U.S.A, Graham’s erstwhile work colleagues, friends from their time in the Royal Navy, parishioners from Wyke and latterly, friends from Haslemere.

Graham is survived by David and Helen, and by his grand-daughters, Alice and Sarah of whom he was very proud.

His ashes are interred in Louise’s grave in Wyke. At the start of this season of Lent with its hurt and pain, we can look forward to the Resurrection and Graham being able to join his beloved Louise.

Some memories of Graham held by close friends, mostly members of his Homegroup: ‘His commitment to the Authorised version of the Bible.

While the rest of us were reading from various modern translations he always kept to the traditional text.’ (CJ) One evening some years ago, when I was driving Graham back to his house, he shared how he became a Christian and spoke of his personal faith in Jesus .

I had always known Graham as a fairly reserved person. To hear his personal story in the car that evening, was a privilege I will always remember.’ (IB) ‘

‘I first got to know Graham about 35 years ago, when he joined our Bible Study group. We had wonderful members over the years, who had great faith and knowledge, but Graham often challenged us to see an issue in a different light.

I skip to his last few years... His world had shrunk but his interest in events and people in the parish did not flag. He remembered facts about them, which were not always correct in detail but in principal, so we puzzled it out together and had delight in solving the mystery. Graham's eyes would always light up on seeing his friends come into the room.

Graham, you enriched our lives. We are grateful you had so many years with us.’ (DN) ‘His sense of humour was also always in evidence... It’s been a real privilege to have had him as a friend.’ (AL) ‘What I remember most was his huge smile whenever I went to visit and his sense of humour. To mark the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen, this year’s annual neighbourhood get-together, The Big Lunch, is taking on a royal theme!

Following the success of The Diamond Big Jubilee Lunch in 2012, Her Majesty The Queen has included this community gathering in her official four-day-long celebrations this summer. The Big Jubilee Lunch 2022 will be held over the long weekend of 2nd-5th June, and local charity Phyllis Tuckwell is inviting you to join in the party!

A momentous weekend packed full of events is planned this June to mark The Queen’s seventy years in public service. The Big Jubilee Lunch 2022 is one of the highlights, and Phyllis Tuckwell would love it if you would join in by organising your own lunch party to raise funds for local hospice care.

The Big Lunch is held on the first weekend in June every year and invites people to come together at lunchtime to share food and drink and enjoy each other’s company. The idea is simply to meet and have fun together over food - so it’s a community celebration that’s right up your street! You could organise a street party, picnic or BBQ, or just meet up with neighbours for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Nine million people took part in The Big Lunch in 2021! 6.5 million of them said they made at least one new friend and the vast majority reported feeling closer to their neighbours and less lonely as a result, proving that people really do benefit by taking part in these community gatherings.

Postcard to the Parish (and away!)

Dear All,

Greetings from Puerto Rico

We have just returned from visiting our daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. The winter is the perfect time to visit as it is the dry season with only occasional tropical showers (and no hurricanes!).

Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony until the beginning of the 20th century when Spanish rule was overturned by the USA. Today it is a bilingual island but the Spanish influence is still very strong.

Each town has a central plaza (square) with a church. One photo shows the Church of San Francisco de Asis in the small town of Aguada, near our daughter, and the others show the capital city (Old San Juan) and a typical western sunset.

The island is 100 miles long and 35 miles wide and our daughter lives near Rincon, on the western edge. Rincon is the surfing capital of the Caribbean, but there are many other beaches for those simply seeking a swim in a warm sea and walk along the sand.

It was good to return to the island, having navigated both US Federal and Puerto Rican Covid-19 regulations!

Sustainable Church Flowers Workshop On Thursday March 17th about 20 ladies from the flower teams of both St Bartholomew’s and St Christopher’s, along with representatives from All Saints, Grayswood, and St Stephen’s, Shottermill, met in the Link to take part in a workshop on Sustainable Church Flowers given by Claire Brown.

‘Sustainable Church Flowers’ is a national movement to rid churches and cemeteries of floral foam (Oasis) which is very detrimental to marine life as it breaks down to micro plastic in water. It is also not Claire Brown biodegradable.

Some cathedrals (notably Worcester), many churches and the RHS have already banned the use of floral foam and last month a proposal was put to the General Synod to ban its use in all churches nationwide.

Claire Brown runs a flower farm, Plant Passion, in the Surrey Hills near East Clandon. She has 25 years’ experience in horticulture and is an advisor and speaker at RHS Wisley. Claire gave us a wonderful demonstration of how to create large floral arrangements using nothing but a bucket and chicken wire! She also urged us to use whatever we have in our garden before rushing off to the supermarket to buy plastic-wrapped greenhouse-grown flowers from the other side of the world. Funny, creative and thought provoking, we then had a chance to try out her ideas under her supervision. Some beautiful arrangements were then created - all plastic free, using nothing but home grown foliage and British flowers.

Now, armed with our knowledge, both St Bart’s and St C’s will be going oasis-free for Easter this year, with our aim to go totally floral foam-free in the near future.

Haslemere celebrates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Here are the plans for the weekend of 2nd to 5th June 2022

Streets bedecked with Flags To mark this remarkable occasion the streets will be decorated with Commonwealth Flags - marking the Queen’s contribution, not only to the UK, but to the whole Commonwealth.

Permanent Memorial There will be celebrations over the Jubilee weekend but in addition a Tower Clock will be installed on the Haslewey Community Centre.

This Jubilee Clock will be a permanent record of the Queen’s extraordinary record of Service.

The clock will be four-faced and will chime the hours in the daytime. The cost will be met by public subscription. All donations are welcome - the clock faces and the weather-vane have already been sponsored.

Bonfire and Fireworks On Thursday 2nd June there will be a Bonfire and Fireworks on the Woolmer Hill Sports Ground. The bonfire will be lit as a beacon at the same time as beacons are lit across the whole country at Sunset.

Food and drink will be available and we are hoping that massed choirs will sing the specially-composed song ‘A Life Lived with Grace’. The picture is of the bonfire at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Haslemere, ten years ago.

Charter Fair The Haslemere Charter Fair will be open from 11am to 5pm on Friday 3rd June 2022. This year it will have a Jubilee flavour and we are asking all stall holders to dress their stalls and themselves in an appropriate manner!

Rotary Scarecrow Competition Following the success of the first Scarecrow competition last year, there will be a second competition this year with the judging taking place on Saturday 4th June at 3pm. The theme will be the Queen’s Jubilee…

Civic Church Service At 11.30 am on Sunday 5th June there will be a Civic Service to mark the occasion in St Bartholomew’s Church. The Mayor will be present and the choir will sing a specially-composed anthem.

Carnival Procession The Carnival Procession will set off from High Lane Estate at 1 pm and make its way down the High Street, Lower Street and Wey Hill to Lion Green. The procession will include floats from Haslemere Parish, local societies, businesses and schools. It will also include classic cars from every decade of her reign.

Dedication of the Jubilee Clock At 4.30 pm Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael More-Molyneux, with the Mayor of Haslemere, will dedicate the Jubilee Clock.

Entertainment on Lion Green There will be a succession of seven bands on the Lion Green Stage marking the seven decades of Her Majesty’s Reign. Bands include Queen by Candlelight (Tribute Band). The evening will end at 10pm.

From Covid to Coronation Pandemic to Platinum Something strange has been happening at the back of the church... and it's not that we haven't been making a noise about it. A window has been left mysteriously open and doors without keys have been opened. The noise becomes interrupted for what sounds like an age, and is somehow different. And regardless of restrictions, lockdowns, freedom days or any other new jargon we have become accustomed to, these people have carried on wearing masks particularly when they are inside their small room. Slightly puffing and working much more silently than they used to - but carrying on each week so that whenever it was allowed there would be a sound to confirm to the outside world that the church continued as before.

What is going on and why? Well in the early days of the pandemic the bellringing fraternity recognised that amongst all the risky activities bellringing was reasonably high risk, consisting of varying degrees of effort exercised in rooms varying from quite small (as at St. Bartholomew's) to large (e.g. Guildford Cathedral), all with varying amounts of ventilation. It will come as no surprise that some belfries have no opening windows and although they may have high ceilings, there is no escape for any pathogens.

Now like a lot of interests, hobbies, etc the bellringers have amongst their folk people from all walks of life and so it was a fairly easy task to call up a senior medic and get his advice and tap into his contacts. We were even more fortunate having a GP in the band (team). As a result we have always had high quality advice which has remained consistent throughout. In our case it meant that we initially restricted ourselves to ringing four bells for distancing, then six slightly distanced which therefore still sounds strange and makes the bellringing more difficult. As a result we only keep to ringing in sequence (called ‘Rounds’) before services, rather than the usual ‘Call Changes’ which involve much more shouting.

We made one exception. Early last month we thought we would do something special and the call went out to volunteer for ‘a moment of madness’. This I am delighted to say was answered in full and as a result at 9.30am on February 6th 39

ten ringers collected in the ringing room with their masks on and rang all ten bells in sequence for the first time in over two years for the 70th anniversary of the Queen's accession. This will be the first many will have heard about this, but just after we started I saw that one early arrival to church had obviously heard the bigger sound and had come down near to the ringing room and was watching and listening to us with the biggest grin on her face. It gave us all a lift and I'm sure made the ringing that little bit better (never easy when you're ringing ten bells). We didn't record our effort in the national records but a thousand other churches did, ranging from Westminster Abbey and one of the big London societies with Royal patronage (The Royal Society of Cumberland Youths) down to small village churches.

So what do we have planned for the main Jubilee celebrations? Bellringers realise that besides their function to ‘call people to church’ they serve to help their communities and nation record the happy and sad moments. As a result we will be ringing during the Jubilee holiday not least at the various services, particularly the Civic Service at 11.30am on Sunday 5th June, and if we can on Friday 3rd as part of the national celebration coinciding with the Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's. Hopefully by then we will be ringing all ten bells out of choice without masks and have re-started welcoming recruits which has been impossible before because of the close proximity needed in the early stages of training. That will be a true celebration!

What is Planned for Easter?

Easter is the story of God’s greatest gift, and His greatest miracle. Jesus Christ the Son of God came to live amongst us, died for us, and rose again that we might find new life and new hope.

Rector Chris has worked with his team to set out Easter along traditional lines for 2022. Many of these services will be live-streamed so do please keep an eye on the parish website and Sunday Notes for such details. 2022 also sees the return of the Passover Meal on the Wednesday of Holy Week. (For more details see page 22 or visit www.haslemereparish.org, looking under the worship menu).

Palm Sunday 10th April An 8:00am Service at St Bartholomew’s as usual, with the 10:00am Holy Communion Services at St Christopher’s being led by Rt Revd Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford. We shall begin the service outside in the churchyard and a procession around St Christopher’s Green.

Evensong as usual at St Bartholomew’s 6:00pm.

Holy Wednesday 13th April 7:30pm The Passover Meal at St Christopher’s. This will be a re-enactment of the Last Supper as a Passover Meal, much as Jesus would have celebrated it. As well as being meaningful, this is a very social event much to be enjoyed. (See page 22). Booking-on is essential. Please contact the Parish Office.

Maundy Thursday 14th April 7:30pm A Service of the Lord’s Supper, with Foot Washing, Stripping of the Altar and Vigil. St Bartholomew's Church.

Good Friday 15th April 10:30am Families@4 Children’s Easter Craft Activities and Worship.
