Dear Friends The wait is over and it is wonderful to be able to share the name of our new Rector with you all. Reverend Chris Bessant will be licensed as Rector of Haslemere and Grayswood at St Bartholomew’s on Thursday 22 August at 7:30pm.

Chris and his wife, Sophie, will move to Haslemere in late July.

It is also wonderful to let you all know we have a new Parish Administrator, Bryony Atkinson. Bryony starts on 17 June.

Sandy and Justin are ordained Deacons at Guildford Cathedral on Sunday 30 June. As you read this, Sandy will have preached at her last service with us and I am certain that her sermon will have been thoughtful and inspiring and we will have been able to celebrate afterwards over a shared meal.

So much happening after a period of waiting and uncertainty, and so much to be grateful to God for.

I would like to thank everyone for their support in running the Parish during the vacancy. Please pray for our Parish as we look forward to new beginnings, with Chris and Sophie and for Sandy and Justin.

Rev Chris has penned some words of welcome from him and Sophie which seem a fitting way to end this letter to you all.

Dear New Friends It is a pleasure to write to you this month as ‘Rector Designate’ in what is my first instalment in your excellent parish magazine. My warmest greeting to you all.

Sophie and I are delighted to have been given the opportunity to bring our family and our lives to Haslemere, which in fact is a re-run of our plans from back in 2001. We had then made an offer on a property in Church Lane which later fell through, leading us to move to Leatherhead instead. It is surely the Lord’s work that we can finally make it to the parish some nineteen years later!

Thank you for all your patience over these last months. When I made my announcement here in Chobham, it was received with much shock and tears and not least those of Sophie and myself. Yet at a time of change comes hope and new life, as God’s will unfolds. There are surely some fruitful times ahead for us all. As of now the tentative plan is for Sophie and I to bid our farewells here on Sunday 21st July, after which we are looking to move to Haslemere that week.

There is also a plan for my licencing service on 22nd August.

For all those who worked so hard to provide the hospitality when we visited the parish in mid-March, I promise to learn all your names again. We had a super time and left both encouraged and challenged. I remind myself, and us all too, that it is God’s church that we serve and not our own. For all those who are carrying extra duties, please know all of God’s support at this time. Amongst your prayers for Sophie and me, can I also entreat you to pray for Sandy, Vic and Justin at a time of great change for them too. Also, please pray for the vacancy in Grayswood and all of the faithful there too.

They say that moving is stressful - and it is. So often change exposes cracks, and here I’m referring to the healthy cracks that allow for positive growth. After six and a half years in Chobham I have settled into a comfortable routine of things, but this now needs to be broken apart (metaphorically and theologically) and 4

reassembled in a shape that reflects how God wants me to be in a new place.

I’ve learnt from my own past experiences that God usually makes much use of the transitions between major parts of our lives. Uncertainty in life always finds its certainty in God. So right now I am very much in the mode of waiting, watching and listening, and that is where I expect to stay for a good while yet.

As time goes on my principal aim is to get to know you all very well. Please be patient because it will take time! I am joining your family as one who serves as well as one who leads, but principally I would wish our bond to be that of friendship. Jesus famously referred to his disciples as friends in that wonderful passage from John 15 where he described himself as the vine, and surely Haslemere and Grayswood are part of that spreading growth in our lives.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to sponsor Justin on his special ordination day on 30th June, and so perhaps I may have the pleasure of meeting some of you there.

Sophie and I are very much looking forward to being amongst you.

Spotlight on

Sandy Clarke I’m sure that everyone in the parish (and far beyond it) will know Sandy, our Youth Minister, but why is this American in Haslemere? I was privileged to have coffee with her and discover more about her before she leaves for her training curacy in St. Thomas Aon the Bourne and St. Martin in the summer.

Sandy was born in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) which is about an hour and a half from Chicago. Her parents were from Des Moines (Iowa) and she lived there for three years before the family moved to Glen Ellyn, Chicago, and Sandy and her sister went to Arbor View Primary School, then on to Glen Crest Junior High School and later Glenbard South High School. This is the home of The Raiders, (a sports club), and she is proud to say that she was in the Marching Band. After spending some time in Broken Arrow (Oklahoma), she left school at 17 and travelled all over the south-east states.

Then home to mother in Chicago, to DuPage University (Illinois) and Northern Illinois University for her B.Sc. in Marketing. Sandy had been a volunteer youth worker at Southminster Presbyterian Church and even though she was not yet a Christian she was appointed as their Youth Minister for two years and so in 1986 decided to go back to NI University to do a Masters degree in Secondary Education.

But Europe beckoned, so Sandy and her sister travelled here for four months and in Holland she met a Dutchman and fell in love. She taught at the American School in The Hague for a while and, after realising that she and her Dutchman were not suited for a life-time relationship (although remaining good friends), she came to London. She found a job working for the NHS in the Nursing Directorate in the Paddington district, but missed teaching and managed to work two days a week in the NHS and three days a week teaching marketing and computing at Leyton 6th Form College. Preferring teaching, she left the NHS and became full-time deputy head of computing at Leyton and loved it.

Sandy met David Clarke and they flew to the church in Glen Ellyn to be married in 1992. A move to Haslemere followed and a new job, teaching business studies in Guildford College. Daughter Alexandra was born and, later, son Adam.

When her children were born Sandy taught part-time and when they were at St. Bartholomew’s School, she and the children started going to St. Bartholomew’s Church, although not as professing Christians. She explains this as an American tradition; families attend church as part of the community in which they live and for no other reason. There, families must be affiliated to their local church.

Sandy found 45 minutes of peace in her busy life in St. Bart’s, and she found everyone there most welcoming at a time when her personal life was difficult.

Richard Taylor-Gooby and she formed a music group; he and Susan FarnellWatson and Debbie Peet were great influences in her life. Merrin Playle and Delia Orme started a Friday morning group for would-be Christians - and slowly Sandy believed. She started leading the Sunday School and the more her faith grew the more she knew she needed to use it. Howard Body mentioned this and her previous experience as a Youth Minister to Norman Jones, then Rector, and, as Sandy says, ‘he collared me’. Sandy thought that as she was then in her early 40s she would be too old to be a Youth Minister and was not qualified.

Norman thought otherwise and so, in 2005, she became YM for the parish. She loved it - and so did her children - serving local schools - ‘the best thing ever’.

Ministry and motherhood fitted well together as she became well known in the town. When her children reached secondary school age it became more difficult to fit it all in, but it became possible when Assistant Youth Ministers were appointed. Sandy has had six over the years and keeps in touch with them all.

Most (if not all) are now serving in ministry or Christian Youth work.

As her children became older, Sandy felt called to the paid priesthood and in 2006 she met the Diocesan Director of Ordinands for discussions. Her marriage was in serious trouble and she decided to leave it and sow more deeply into her existing ministry. Alex is now at Leeds University and Adam is 19. In 2012 she and David separated but remain friends.

It is Sandy’s habit to fast and pray one day a month. One February she heard a voice ‘Sandy, now you can do it.’ But she felt she wanted confirmation of this and it came the next morning in Waitrose. She met a friend, John Ian Brown who said ‘Sandy, you should be a priest!’ Mary confirmed this and was a great mentor and friend during her formation. She investigated being a self8

supporting minister (SSM) as Delia is (she was then over 50), but William Challis, the Diocesan Director of Ordinands, said she should apply for full-time paid priesthood. And so she is now coming to the end of three years training at St. Mellitus College in London. She will be ordained at Guildford Cathedral on June 30th - to which all are invited, she says!

Sandy will be leaving Haslemere in July to serve as a training curate at The Bourne in Farnham.

She expects to be there for 3-4 years and will be priested in a year’s time. Her long-term future?

God knows. She would like to have some involvement in Africa (having travelled with Tear Fund in Rwanda and visited Kenya recently) or maybe an urban environment, having loved teaching in Leyton.

We shall miss her here - her boundless enthusiasm, her honest and open beliefs and her hard work. And so will most of the youth in this town. We say with them ‘Goodbye,’ which means ‘God be with you.’

Messy Church – 28 June. Families are invited to meet in the Link from 3.15 until 5.30 for games, worship, crafts and a cooked tea - so much fun.

Breakout - 10-14 year-olds meet in the Crypt on Thursdays from 5.30pm until 7. 00pm Liquid Youth - Worship with other young people - ages 14 through 20 (year 10 or above) - on Sunday evenings from 6.30-8.30pm at Jack Robson’s flat.

Soul Survivor 2019 In August Chloe and other youth ministers in the area will be taking a group of around 50 young people to Soul Survivor.

This is a Christian camp, for 6 days, aimed at developing the faith of young people whilst also giving them a fun time too! There are daily talks, worship sessions and also activities such as football games and discos.

Sadly this is the last one, however we are hoping to make it the best one yet!

Dawn Service Easter Morning 5.45am at St Bartholomew’s A beautiful, bright morning met two dozen early risers as they attended the traditional Service of Light, led by Sandy.

One of the great joys of Easter is the lighting of the Easter Fire as dawn breaks, the lighting of the Easter Candle from the fire and the passing of that light amongst those present as they light their candles.

With Christ in the grave, the world is dark, but with his resurrection the light returns to us to burn brightly in our lives.

Eternal God, Who made this most holy night to shine with the brightness of your one true light, set us aflame with the fire of your love, and bring us to the radiance of your heavenly glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen The service continued with renewal of baptismal vows, the singing (thank you Clive O) of the great Easter Song of Praise (The Exsultet) and the first singing of the Gloria since the start of Lent with the ringing of our own very special set of handbells. We gathered in the chancel for the First Eucharist of Easter and then adjourned to the Link for scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes Another virus, and another hacking cough. ‘Forget proprietary medicines,’, I was told. ’Stick to lemon and honey.’ On a sunny afternoon I took a mug of this soothing brew into the garden. As I sat and sipped, my thought turned to honey’s intrinsic value. It’s good for us - a source of natural sugar.

For the Israelites honey was a dietary staple. It was the thought of reaching ’a land flowing with milk and honey’ that kept them going on their journey to Canaan. Much later, John the Baptist would be sustained by it - along with locusts - in the wilderness.

In the course of time the product came to be used figuratively. Proverbs 24:13,14: ‘Eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Know that wisdom is such to the soul.’ Proverbs 16:24: ‘Pleasant words are a honeycomb sweet to the soul, and healing to the bones.’

For the Psalmist (Ps. 119:103) honey was symbolic of God’s word: ‘How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.’

In the summer I enjoy watching the bees busying themselves in my lavender. I find their buzzing strangely soothing. We’re being reminded just how much we depend on these little creatures - not just for honey, but in the pollination process - and how disastrous their extinction would be. Recently we were told that they particularly like dandelions.

I don’t! - but I’m learning to respect them, for the sake of the bees. In any case, their bright yellow and the lavender’s purple will make a lovely colour combination!

A prayer I came across recently asks God to ‘tune our hearts to the music of creation.’ In many ways, creation is singing a sad song right now. Let’s not fail to listen to it, and respond to it.

Outward Giving Dorothea Nattrass

‘It was heart-breaking to see the suffering of Christians in Odisha, already some of the poorest and most persecuted in India. Their simple homes and their few possessions were at the mercy of the destructive winds and rain.

But their faith and hope in the Lord remain unshaken.’ – a Barnabas Fund staff worker who was in Odisha when the cyclone struck on 2 May. Odisha state (formerly called Orissa) is strongly Hindu and notorious for a time of terrible anti-Christian violence in Kandhamal district in 2008-9. Shahid Slum, in the heart of Bhubaneshwar, is mainly inhabited by Christians who were displaced at this time. As tribal people they are oppressed and marginalised, and being Christians too makes their plight even worse. Most work as ‘daily wage labourers’ in jobs such as street sweeping or cleaning the sewers or as domestic servants. This type of employment is poorly paid, risky and insecure.

Whenever there is a day they cannot get work, they have no income.

Cyclone Fani brought devastation to Odisha state recently, especially for impoverished and persecuted Christians. But Barnabas is there on the spot and has sent aid for around 20,000 of our brothers and sisters, providing 2,000 rupees (£22; $29; €25) per family for 4,000 Christian families affected by the cyclone.

Local pastors have expressed their gratitude for such a prompt response to their request for practical help for their congregations. The primary need will be to repair the Christians’ flimsy homes.

The Judas Tree

In three days' time I must return To make the others glad But first I had to come to Hell And share the death you had My tree will grow in place of yours Its roots lie here as well There is no final victory Without this soul from Hell" So when we all condemned him As of every traitor worst Remember that of all his men Our Lord forgave him first Dorothea Ruth Etchells was appointed Principal of St John's College, Durham in 1979. This was a notable appointment because this made her both the first lay person and the first woman to be principal of an Anglican college, Cranmer Hall (part of St. John's), that trains clergy, who were in those days only male.

At the last supper, Jesus declares: “woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!

It would have been better for that one not to have been born” (Mark 14.21). However, scripture frequently confirms God’s willingness to forgive all those who are penitent. I do not think that Judas' eventual salvation is ruled out, but I worry that the poem somewhat undercuts Christ’s warning. Or does it? The image of Judas forever hanging on a tree of his own despair is indeed very dark. What do you think?

Presentation of the St Bartholomew’s Church Record to the Museum

On Tuesday 2nd April the Chairman of the Arts Society Haslemere, Alison Marston, presented a leather-bound copy of the record of the artefacts within St Bartholomew’s Church to the Curator of the Haslemere Educational Museum, Julia Tanner, for the Museum library.

Several members of the Arts Society Church recording team were present, along with Trustees of the Museum, including: Bernard Coe, President Emeritus; Melanie Odell, President; Alan Perry, Chairman and the Rev Fiona Glynn, representing the Clergy of the parish. The record was funded by the Arts Society and also the Friends of the Parish of St Bartholomew’s and St Christopher’s.

The record was compiled over recent years in the consistent format recommended by the Arts Society, who have over the last 45 years registered 1,920 similar church records throughout Great Britain, including 20 records of Surrey Churches. The mission is to record the past for future generations. Churches, including St Bart's, house important treasures relating to social and local history and display a wealth of creativity and variety of skills. The team measured, described, photographed and occasionally drew, every item in the church in the categories of memorials, stonework, windows, woodwork, metalwork, library, textiles, paintings and miscellaneous.

Copies of the record are held in the Church, and also in the V and A, with Historic England, the Surrey Archives and Church Care.

Following the presentation, the group gathered together in the volunteers room for coffee, biscuits and reminiscences.

The record can be seen by appointment at the Museum or the Church.

Memory Meadow Remembrance Event A special remembrance event held by Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care on Saturday 30th March saw around 60 people gather together on a beautifully sunny spring morning to remember their loved ones at Memory Meadow in Guildford’s Stoke Park.

Memory Meadow is a special area in Stoke Park which is dedicated to loved ones who are no longer with us, and its colourful mix of beautiful flowers blooms every spring. Local charity Phyllis Tuckwell holds a special remembrance event at Memory Meadow every year. Anyone who wishes to attend is invited to join them as they remember loved ones who have died but who are never forgotten, and celebrate their lives.

Phyllis Tuckwell provides supportive and end of life care for adult patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness . Every day Phyllis Tuckwell supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers - in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham and at the Beacon Centre in Guildford through medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support.

The NHS/Government only covers 20% of their costs, which means they have to raise over ÂŁ20,000 a day to be able to offer all their services, free of charge, to their patients and their families. Thank you to everyone who supported me and donated to the amazing Children’s Society. I had the most wonderful day, feeling loved and supported by thousands of strangers.

This was the 39th year of the Virgin London Marathon and over the 39 years the event has raised over a billion pounds for charity.

Now onto revision for the next month for my Medical exams!

Not a Ghost but a Gift

We used to call it Whitsun - White Sunday because long ago children marched to church in white on that day. No processions nowadays, and we’ve even changed its name. It’s now ‘Pentecost’, which is more accurate but needs explaining.

This year Whitsun/Pentecost is on Sunday June 9th. Pentecost marks a vital event in Christian history. It is a celebrated 50 days after Easter. On the year Jesus was crucified (which took place at the Passover), the remnant of His followers, just 120 of them, were together in an upper room in Jerusalem. They were afraid to show their faces in case the authorities arrested them. But on the day of Pentecost they had an amazing collective experience.

They described it in terms of wind and fire, a great surge of spiritual energy and confidence. Afraid no longer they burst out on to the streets where crowds were gathering for the festival, led by Peter they began to tell them about Jesus and His resurrection. As they did so, although many of the people in the crowd were foreigners who spoke other languages, everyone heard them in their own tongue. Peter told them that what they were seeing was the fulfilment of an old prophecy when God would pour out His Spirit on the human race, men and women, young and old.

As a result of His words and the extraordinary spectacle, 3000 people believed and were baptized in the name of Jesus. They were the nucleus of what in 100 years would be a Church that would turn history upside down. For Christians Pentecost is in effect the birthday of the Church.

I realise many people find the whole idea of the Holy Spirit mysterious and elusive. It wasn’t helped by the earlier title ‘Holy Ghost’. The spirit is not spiritually a ‘ghost’ but a precious gift.

The Remarkable Reverend George Herbert Aitken - part lll When I looked into the archives and discovered for myself just how much the Reverend Aitken had achieved in his comparatively short life of 56 years, I suggested that a third piece on his life and work was fully justified. His ideas and the energy to bring them to fruition were remarkable.

George Aitken was Rector of Haslemere from 1897 until 1917.

His predecessor, the Reverend Sanders Etheridge, had said that the two most pressing needs for the parish were improved schooling and a permanent place of worship for the western end of the parish. Aitken was to achieve so much more than that!

By the end of the Victorian era Haslemere was changing and growing as never before. The coming of the railway to the town in 1859 was significant and brought change, but not immediately. However, improved life expectancy, allied with advances in industrial methods and mechanisation, meant that by the 1880s the town was growing. There was a pressing need for housing, healthcare and education - matters covered in my previous article. The related issue of caring for the souls was all part of the agenda and in 1901 the architect Charles Spooner was commissioned to produce plans for a new church for the west end of the town. The choice of architect was inspired: Charles Spooner's commitment to the Arts and Crafts movement was fully in accord with principles of the prevailing Peasant Arts movement that Haslemere was home to. In his obituary of 1939 it was said that Spooner was, '... of the small band of architect craftsmen who lived in the inheritance of William Morris'.

The plans Spooner produced were of much greater appeal than those of the town's resident architect, J W Penfold, who had been responsible for the parish 22

church restoration and enlargement some thirty years before. In fact, Penfold had not been invited to submit any drawings for this latest ecclesiastical proposal.

The site for the new church was to have been in Kings Road (near the rail crossing now a footbridge) but the site's shortcomings led to an alternative being sought, and a half-acre plot at the foot of St Christopher’s, decked in poppies, celebrating Farnham Lane was bought for the centenary of the end of WWI £150.

Appropriately for Haslemere, there is considerable Arts and Crafts movement influence in the furnishings of St Christopher's, with hand-worked leather on the wrought iron lectern, hand woven fabrics from Joseph King's workshop in Kings Road, the hand-carved pulpit and, slightly later, the choir stalls. The new church was completed in record time. Within a year of its foundation stone being laid in November 1902, the new church was consecrated by Bishop Ryle of Winchester. The final cost was less than ÂŁ5,000, with a number of costsaving changes made to the size and the choice of materials used.

The standard of housing for the urban and rural poor was widely recognised as being very low and Aitken appealed to landowners and businessmen to provide good quality houses for workers whose labour was essential to service their houses and estates. In 1901 there were thirty applicants for one vacant cottage in East Street (now Petworth Road).

Aitken encouraged workers to join branches of the various Friendly Societies which he saw as powerful avenues to a cure for the poverty suffered by the often irregularly paid labourers. Aitken was a strong advocate for the payment of 'fair wages' and when he pressed the parish council to prepare a programme of public works, he insisted that a Fair Wage clause be added so that contractors would not be able to offer work at low prices which they could only deliver at the expense of the labourers.

Throughout his first decade in Haslemere, Aitken's thoughts centred on the intractable problem of housing people who were too financially insecure to pay sufficient rent for decent accommodation which could provide property owners with an acceptable return on their capital. These challenges were much influenced by Octavia Hill (one of the three founders of the National Trust) who was managing fifteen hundred London properties for a number of different owners. Hill's rigorously enforced rules concerning temperance, regular work and due payment of rent became a model for liberal progress.

Out of all this, and following the 1906 Town Planning Act, came the formation in 1911 of the Haslemere Tenants Co Ltd, with the rectory as its registered office.

The company's shareholders would provide enough capital to buy land to build Haslemere's so-called Garden Suburb of some forty houses in what became Chestnut Avenue, Popes Mead, and parts of West Street and Bridge Road.

Eventually the company had built no fewer than ninety-four cottages, for a reasonable rent, each with indoor sanitation, a bath, and a garden. (A personal note here: Our first house was in Oxford. It was a small, evilly damp Victorian terrace, two up/two down, with every conceivable pest, one cold tap and an outside lavatory. Next door one side was the tiny local shop run by Mrs Kath Day. Ben and Kath lived behind and over the shop; Kath cooked the Sunday joint for our neighbour the other side who did not have an oven. The Days did have a proper bath tub with taps and a waste: it was in the kitchen with a board covering it when not in use. The point of this reminiscence is that having a bath tub did not necessarily mean you also had a bathroom.)

Conclusion In researching and writing these three articles, I wondered why it was that George Herbert Aitken had become such a liberal-minded and highly motivated individual. He was born in 1863 into a prosperous Manchester calico printing family of Scottish origin. His father died in 1874 and Aitken was sent to Rugby School and went subsequently to Oriel College Oxford. Spending his formative years in Manchester, then England's second largest and most staunchly liberal, free-trade city, must have had an impact on the development of his lifelong principles.

As we have seen, Aitken was pre-occupied with education, but drama and amateur theatricals, together with music and sports of all sorts were all subjects dear to him. Many of the amateur theatricals were held in the rectory garden 24

and, later, at the school hall at the new Chestnut Avenue School (previous article) which was another of Aitken's projects. This was to be the venue for many public performances before Haslemere Hall became available for public use after the end of WW1 (again the subject of a previous article).

I have been unable to find any reference to Mrs Eva Aitken.

However, in 1910 there is a record of her donation to build Saint Mary's Home with an isolation unit (now respectively St Mary’s House, shown in the photo (right), and the adjacent Mullion Cottage in Tanners Lane).

These were for poor city children, the plight of whom had moved Aitken when he was working in Stepney & Whitechapel, to become involved with the Children's Country Homes Movement. It enabled a dozen or more poor girls to have a brief respite from the polluted city squalor by coming to the fresh air of Haslemere. As recently as the 1950s the girls from the Home became a familiar sight in Haslemere, easily distinguished by their large black berets and black cloaks with red silk-linings.

In 1917 Aitken became ill and resigned his living. He left Haslemere and, after a short holiday, accepted the Archbishop of Canterbury's request to become Vicar of Lambeth. So many priests had become service Padres that there was a great shortage. In November 1919, while attending a charity function at Lambeth Palace, he was again taken ill. Following an emergency operation on his throat he died two days later.

Revd. George Herbert Aitken – Finding his grave - bringing the story up to date In this edition of Haslemere Link, Robert Serman concludes his fascinating history of the remarkable former Rector, George Aitken. In the February/March edition, Frankie Gaiter set the scene by explaining that this year commemorates the centenary of his death on 27 June 1919. A Choral Evensong will have taken place on Sunday 19 May at St Bartholomew’s to commemorate his life. I have been asked to write something about the uncovering (literally) of his grave in Derby Road churchyard and what is planned for it.

Frankie first alerted me to the forthcoming centenary last September. From the burial registers that I hold, I was able to locate the grave in the upper left hand quadrant of Derby Road churchyard, fairly close to the boundary with the school. It was in a very overgrown state with an adjacent, very large shrub virtually obscuring it. It was clear that some heavy work would be required to open up the area. Fortunately, due to our good relations with Waverley BC (who have responsibility for maintenance of all our graveyards) I was able to arrange for their contractor, Glendale, to carry out the work at nil cost to the Church in late November 2018. Normally, ‘maintenance’ means regular grass cutting with the occasional extra if it can be negotiated.

During periods of better weather in February and March, I was able to continue to clean up and tidy the grave to the point that one could read all the inscriptions. The removal of mounds of earth also revealed a partial column of broken concrete lying longitudinally on top of the grave. Although not salvageable, it does appear that this might have been the remains of the Crusader’s sword referred to in Frankie’s article.

The decision to be taken next was whether to leave the grave as it stands, or to see if it could be renovated at reasonable cost and, ideally, in time for the

The Church has previously employed a firm of stonemasons, recommended by Waverley BC, to carry out repairs and to make safe important memorials in the main churchyard. The company, Stonecrest, have quoted for the work and this has been accepted. The Church is deeply grateful to the Friends of the Parish for agreeing to fund this work in recognition of the respect and admiration in which George Aitken is held.

The grave kerbs will now be lifted and taken to Stonecrest’s workshop in Ash Vale. The four corners will be secured with 6 inch stainless steel dowels, each countersunk by 1.5 inches. The broken kerb on the east side, shown clearly in one of the photos, will be similarly repaired to make a secure unit. On return to the churchyard it will be laid onto a new concrete one-piece foundation. This will stabilise the whole grave and prevent it from twisting. The entire memorial will be cleaned and the inscriptions should then be good for many years Postscript: Since originally writing this article the grave was returned to Derby Road Churchyard ahead of schedule and looks resplendent (photo, right). Nothing has been disturbed by the contractors and the remains of the original Crusader’s sword have been reburied in the grave. There is now a simple Cross upon the grave and fresh soil. it is hoped that readers will find time to inspect the restored grave which is seen as a fitting tribute to a remarkable man.

In My Garden Philip Duly Of all the summer flowering perennials, the one that unfairly attracts the greatest derision is the unassuming lupin. Hollyhocks and foxgloves suffer the same fate and even the grand dame of the herbaceous border, delphiniums, have lately fallen out of favour with fashionistas who dismiss them all as "cottage garden favourites", and intended as a term of abuse.

I will continue to resolutely defend lupins, having enjoyed them from the age of five. Lupins have exquisite timing, with their foliage emerging in April and their elegant tapering candle spires flowering from late May in advance of most other herbaceous perennials. Their multiple, long-lasting flower spikes rapidly appear like magic to provide a unique and steady vertical in the border. I welcome their appearance almost as much as the bees that they attract.

Lupins provide useful camouflage for unsightly daffodil foliage and make comfortable partners for hostas, delphiniums and peonies which will eventually conceal their own fading foliage following their flowering season. Their colour range is phenomenal. I love them all, but my current favourites are The Governor, consisting of dazzling deep blue flowers with contrasting white petals, My Castle which has fragrant, dusky rose flowers, and the multicoloured Manhattan Lights with purple, pink and yellow contrasting flower spikes. And remember; you don't need a cottage to have a cottage garden and

Indoor tomatoes. If there is not as much height in your greenhouse as you would like for your vine tomatoes, here is a suggestion. Allow just one side shoot to grow on each plant, then train it upwards and tie it in parallel to the main stem. Continue to pinch out side-shoots on both stems.

July:

At this time of the year it can be difficult to decide which task to tackle first. So remember the pleasing advice of that great gardener Christopher Lloyd of Great Dixter:- “The job to do today is the one you feel like doing”.

Crusted Rack of Lamb Linda Donaldson

This is a wonderfully easy meal if you have guests or just Sunday lunch.

Serves 6 2 racks of lamb (6-8 cutlets per rack) 50g. (2oz) white bread, crusts removed 3 tblsp. chopped chives 3 tblsp chopped parsley A little Dijon mustard Salt and pepper

Cutting through the lamb between each cutlet before putting on the crust makes the rack very easy to carve.

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees C/200 C fan/Gas 7 Remove the skin from the lamb and trim away any surplus fat. Make cuts about 2cms deep between each bone. Heat a large frying pan until hot. Brown the lamb on both sides until golden, then leave to cool while making the crust.

Put the bread into a food processor and whizz until you have fine crumbs. Add the chopped herbs and whizz again.

Spread the fat side of the lamb with a little Dijon mustard and pat on the crumb mixture.

Arrange in a small roasting tin, crust-side up, and roast in the oven for 30 minutes, which will keep the lamb pink in the middle.

Transfer to a hot plate, cover with foil and rest for 10 minutes in a warm place.

It’s a Small World…! ‘

Canada seems to be the place for chance meetings to take place, judging from previous articles.

Last August/September Chris and I were fulfilling a life-long ambition to travel across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver by train. On reaching Jasper however, our itinerary took us by coach to Banff via Lake Louise where we stayed in a small rustic hotel in the shadow of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

On setting off for a walk from the hotel to the far end of the lake, we heard a call “Lynn, Chris!” We looked up and saw across the shoreline a familiar figure waving at us.

It was none other than our friend Jan Millington from the bottom of our road in Haslemere and who, as some of you will recall, joined Mary’s group on the pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2016. Although we were following a similar trip over the next few days, our paths didn’t cross again until we were all back in home.

We went to Canada for a complete break from our Haslemere life, but meeting Jan by the beautiful lakeside that morning lifted our hearts and made us realise that we are never far from our wonderful Haslemere community and the friends we have made in our seven years here.

Robert Ian Oddy Late organist at St. Christopher’s 1934 - 2019; May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Eulogy given at Ian’s funeral by daughter, Jenny Alexander ‘For all the Saints who from their labours rest…

Soon, soon to faithful pilgrims cometh rest.’

Our father wasn't a saint, even though he loved the hymn; but he was a faithful pilgrim. When I was ranging through his extensive poetry collection looking for something to read today, I found a volume of the much-admired (by Dad) Joseph Brodsky, the 20th-century, Nobel-prizewinning Russian poet. Inside the inscription read 'Ian, Thank you for your outstanding musical contribution and the many years of support, with gratitude from the governors, staff and pupils of Midhurst Grammar'. In classic Dad fashion, I had never heard of the work he'd done for Midhurst Grammar. Oh I knew of his work as organist and choirmaster of so many churches throughout our lives, mainly because, given the amount of hours he'd given up to organ practice, choir practice and all the many services that roll around the liturgical year, one couldn't fail to notice his unstinting commitment; how he always seemed to be thanking Mum for another meal 'fit for a king' then scooting off to church with one battered leather music case after another, as they wore out, were replaced and wore out again.

And for all this, he never accepted a penny of the small salary due to him, choosing instead to give it back to the church, as his further contribution to the community. He was indeed a very generous man, both with his money and with his time. He always took up the mantel to fund-raise for our schools when we were teenagers, and tirelessly recruited children for his choirs, visiting families 33

on dark winter nights to meet future choristers, assuring them of fun, teamwork and the great sense of joyous, communal pride they would experience if they joined the church choir; and they always did.

When I was a trainee teacher in Rodborough English department 16 years ago, a colleague suddenly asked 'Are you Ian Oddy's daughter?' 'Yes' I replied. She suddenly glowed with gratitude, 'My daughter is now a professional, classical singer and it was he who inspired her at All Saints, Witley, 20 years ago'. Imagine MY pride.

Music, I am sure he would say, was his first love. His earliest memory, he often recalled, was tiptoeing halfway down the stairs of his Huddersfield home, watching through the banisters, as his mother on the piano, grandfather on cello, father and grandmother singing, all made music together. And the music he heard most? Hymns, and his beloved Elgar. He often asked me if I thought he could consider himself a contemporary of Elgar, the great musician having died in February 1934 and Dad being born in October of the same year. I always said yes; and the answer always brought a grateful and satisfied smile. On the very last day of his wonderful life, it was Elgar that accompanied his post-breakfast snooze, and, I like to think, Elgar that once more exhorted him to 'come, come, make music with me' as he took his last breaths‌ But he wasn't always a keen musician. Up to the age of 14, and coming from a musical family, he was in his own words ‘an average, teenage piano player who reluctantly practised scales and arpeggios'. All this was to change when the organist at Deighton Methodist church died. Immediately Dad was recruited, or so the story goes, by Jimmy Ackroyd, with the immortal words, always spoken in a thick Yorkshire accent when Dad recounted, 'Ian cans't play th'organ?' To which Dad says he had no time to reply before Jimmy added, 'Ian, if can'st play t' piano, can'st play th'organ'. And that was that. Cut to, as my husband would say, organ lessons at Chichester Cathedral when he moved to Haslemere in his late forties, and for twenty happy years after, with Alan Thurlow, the then cathedral organist, whom we are so grateful to have playing for us today. So many people over the years, especially at St Christopher's, have exclaimed, 'no-one makes that small, old, organ sound like Ian did'. I think it's because he never played as a performance musician, but rather as a conduit for the spiritual to take hold in the service, with whomsoever was present, be it only a faithful five at a freezing February evensong, or the whole school nativity service for St Bartholomew's. Nor was he an organ snob: he played where he was needed, always accommodating awkward timings, broken pipes, sticky organ stops; playing to serve music, the community and his faith. And as a family we were 34

blessed to share in his musical journey: both Tim and I sang in his choirs as children, all his grandchildren were church choristers, the boys being cathedral choristers at Truro, and singing for us here today.

His generosity and creativity was also channelled very strongly into gardening.

Many people in Haslemere and beyond have a little bit of the glorious April Wood in their gardens. Every year he grew delphiniums from seed (Pacific Giants variety) because Mum loved them - I tried to emulate this when he was no longer able to do so; turns out it's quite an art which I have yet to master, but I will keep trying. And I remember him bountifully proclaiming every year, when returning from his burgeoning vege plot with armfuls of beans, sprouts or cabbages, 'nobody need starve: there's enough food in the world for everyone: we just have to share it round.' He certainly made the most of his own green and pleasant land, and in doing so, both his plantsman's skills and ever-giving spirit ensured all our gardens still bloom with his love.

Dad also had a great gift of humour. One of his wonderful carers at Surrey Hills, told me she felt she joked with him right up until the end (as I know we all did) which she found amazing because his language was increasingly limited. I knew just what she meant, and it made me reflect on what humour is. Dad was always fond of words: poetry, books, newspapers. When I was a little girl, Mum would read me stories and Dad would read me poetry. Much, much later, only perhaps ten years ago, we bumped into one another on Scotland Lane, both coming out of our garden gates, clutching identical newspaper articles that we'd both cut out of that day's Guardian for the other one to read: on the importance of the semi-colon in the logic of reasoning! Imagine our collective delight in the middle of the lane, musing on punctuation. But his laughter and humour at the end of his life was more than giggling at word-play and puns: it was the pure, elated humour of shared joy that would just erupt from being with a fellow human, alive and enraptured: and this he shared with any soul that came his way, right up to the end. As our great friend William Blake put it, 'He who kisses joy as it flies, lives in eternity's sunrise.'

When the first signs of his illness began to show, Mum was worried, but, undaunted, took up her sword and fought the dragon that is dementia. She continued to take him on adventurous holidays, despite the extra difficulties it brought for her (such as his losing his passport in China). One of their last holidays together was a cruise around the British Isles, culminating in being part of the Thames flotilla for the Queen's diamond jubilee celebrations. I can still 35

hardly believe it when I see footage of this amazing international event, that my parents were on a boat moored outside Dad's beloved Festival Hall, celebrating at its epicentre, despite their difficulties.

They loved each other from their first date aged 16, when Dad invited Mum to hear his father and step-mother sing Handel's Messiah with the Huddersfield Choral Society. And for the next sixty-one years, they continued to share their love of music, visiting Bayreuth and Glyndebourne many times, and the Royal Opera House and Eno regularly. They loved each other and they loved life. and they had fun to the end, celebrating their sixtieth wedding anniversary last May. A few years ago I heard, on Dad's beloved Radio 4, the definition of a saint as 'someone whom light shines through'. I'm not sure if I really believe in saints: or rather, the supposed idea that some folk are truly good or bad. Solzhenitsyn, another great Russian writer, wrote 'the line between good and evil runs through all our hearts' and I think he's right. But for me, when I wasn't sure which side of the line I was on, our dad stood out as a beacon, through whom the light shone, and always will.

And thus, Dad's best gifts to me were his words of wisdom, usually meted out in the wee small hours of the morning when, as fellow insomniacs, we would meet in the kitchen for surreptitious snacks, and ruminate on life. It was here that he told me, 'Jen, always hold on to the kindness that you think of; and act on it.

Give the bunch of flowers, invite the new-comer to tea, hug those in grief, smile at people first.' How lucky are we that this wonderful, generous, funny, compassionate man was our husband, father, papa, friend and neighbour, with his love and laughter still freely moving through all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. If a saint is someone through whom the light shines, then although he slayed no dragons, he did shine his light on our wonderful world and it is a kinder and more beautiful place because of him.

Open Day at Oak Hall Friday 28th June (2-5pm) Come and join us for an afternoon of art, music and tea at Oak Hall Care Home.

Local artist, Zoe Oliver, will be leading a painting activity (six large canvasses) with our residents, school children and any members of the public who’d like to join in. There will be musical entertainment, tombola, cream teas and our beautiful grounds to enjoy. If anyone wishes to look around the home we will arrange tours for groups of 4-6.

Booking isn’t necessary, although an idea of numbers will help with our catering requirements.
