Dear Friends What a privilege it is to be writing this letter, especially during Lent, one of my favourite seasons. Lent begins with pancakes and ashes. Each year I have the joy of ‘ashing’ the Year 6’s from St Bartholomew’s School in church worship. Amazingly, this service is one of the highlights of their year. Two years ago Ash Wednesday occurred during the half term and there was a near riot until Mary told them that we would do it a week later. Our children are so beautiful.

Rowan Williams is an occasional lecturer on my course at St Mellitus where I am training to be a priest. Last month he said, ‘I am not worthy of forgiveness; that is why I need to be forgiven.’ His words keep ringing through my mind as I keep my own Lenten discipline. I am not worthy and yet God deems me so.

What I like the most about Lent is the opportunity to do something novel in order to draw closer to God; that whenever we do this in good faith it actually happens. For some years it has been my spiritual practice to fast one day each month while spending more time in prayer on that day. This practice has been rich, but during the third and final year of my degree studies I have made less and less time available for retreat in this way. This Lent I will be fasting one day each week, and am doing so now as I write. Each time I fast, I feel God holding me and it is like being handed a clean slate. I am also planning to pick something up and so I will be attending the Lent course led by Peter Sellers using the book The Nail by Bishop Stephen Cottrell.

I would like to take a moment to encourage each of you to drop something and to pick something up this Lent if you haven’t already done so. I realise that when you read this, Lent will be half way through, but that doesn’t matter; it’s 3

the giving time to God that counts. I know that Peter will be running our Lent course in such a way that we can drop in and out as our busy lives require. I believe this year we all need a good Lent. There has been - and continues to be - so much change in our church. As people that we love have left or are preparing to leave and new people are preparing to step into different roles or even to move to Haslemere to lead us. Drawing closer to God will help us stand firm on shifting ground. You can imagine that I have been missing Mary. She and I have worked closely together these last seven and a half years and finding a new way of working is difficult. I am someone who likes to dream creatively with others before putting together an order of service. Of course, Mary would say that this is a good training opportunity, but for this and many reasons I feel God’s goodness in Lent.

So the big change for me will begin on 30 June when I will be ordained at 10.30am in Guildford Cathedral. Justin Manley Cooper will be ordained as well.

I have appreciated your prayers over the years and ask that you continue by keeping us both in your prayers as ordination draws nearer. The Diocese has told me that everyone is welcome to attend; that our cathedral will hold us all.

What a joy it would be to see you there on that day.

After ordination I will begin as the training curate in The Bourne Parish, working under Rev John Morris who will be my training incumbent. The Parish holds three churches: St Thomas on the Bourne (parish church), St Martins on the Green (daughter) and Brambleton Hall (younger daughter). Having four active choirs, I am feeling particularly grateful for our choir who have patiently taught me so much about singing and in particular about how to sing matins and evensong.

With the prospect of leaving looming, after being employed by our parish for thirteen and a half years, I find myself vacillating between sadness, joy, fear and anxiety. I have made so many good friends here; I simply cannot imagine working anywhere else, and yet I am acutely aware that God is calling me to do so. This knowledge is exciting and joyful even as I feel sorrow knowing that I will be going. The anxiety and fear come from knowing that I will need to move house and to begin all over again in a new community. Perhaps I need to start watching Marie Kondo, the Japanese house decluttering consultant!

My tutor has asked each of us to plan our leaving and to ‘end well’, whatever that may mean. For me, I want to know that I have had a chance to say 4

goodbye thoughtfully and an opportunity to hand over work where there are willing hands to take it. I must say that I am most grateful for the willing hands that have materialised so far; Messy Church, Sunday School and the All Age Service have found new, capable leaders and supporters, while I am working to ensure an equally smooth transition for the Families@4 congregation. My last service will be 2 June, after which I am hoping that we may all gather together to break bread, drink a bit of wine and enjoy fellowship. I hope you can come.

Last Sunday Bishop Karowei (of Woolwich) spoke to all the ordinands on my course, telling us that every morning, just as he awakens, he and his wife sing a particular song together; a song that reminds him why we make special preparations in Lent. It is sung to the tune of Jingle Bells; try it in your mind although you may find it hard to get rid of.

J – O – Y, J – O – Y, I’ll tell you what it means.

Jesus first and yourself last, And others in between.

The Bishop has a lovely and hardy voice. His wife is a saint.

May your Lent discipline draw you ever more deeply into the joy of Christ and the J – O – Y of our lives here together, such that we may rejoice intently with Jesus in his resurrection this Eastertide.

Mary’s Farewell Address Candlemas 2019 5th February 2019 Psalm 24 Luke 2. 22-40 All through Epiphany we have been reflecting on and celebrating the revelation of Christ to the world - the revelation which is the necessary consequence of Christmas - the revelation without which Christmas would be an arcane mystery for a few privileged shepherds and foreigners.

The stories we have been hearing in Epiphany - the arrival of the magi, Jesus’ baptism by the Jordan, his first, joyous, miracle in Cana, his first proclamation of himself as the fulfilment of the Messianic prophecies - these together form the next part of the great story. Jesus’ birth sets the scene… now we see it unfold and begin to understand what it means and what is our part in it.

At this dark time of the year we celebrate the promise of light - the light to lighten the Gentiles - as we tell the story of how Mary and Joseph brought their son to the temple 40 days after his birth, according to the custom, to present him to the Lord and redeem him with the sacrifice of two young pigeons - had they been wealthier it would have been a lamb. There in the temple he is recognised by Simeon and Anna - the very young acknowledged by these two who are at the end of their lives - and Simeon speaks the words of the Nunc Dimittis, so well loved as part of our tradition, sung or said at evening services every day.

Last night at Evensong we celebrated the light, the light that lightens all our lives, and blessed the candles that will be used in the parish in the year ahead including the candle oil for the altar candles! I was very conscious as we did this that I won’t be here to see those candles lighted and burning down week by week, to light the Paschal candle at Easter, to share its light and extinguish it at Pentecost as the Holy Spirit flows out into the world once more, to give candles lit from it to the newly baptised, to see candlelight fill this church at the beginning of Advent and at the Christingle service, to hover anxiously as children reach up to light the Advent wreath, and to rejoice in the glory of St Christopher’s by candlelight at Christmas. I will be thinking of you and praying for the parish as you go forward into this light, and I know that many of you will 6

be thinking of and praying for me. This isn’t the end of our relationship, our friendship, though it is the end of my ministry to you as parish priest, the day on which the cure of souls for this united benefice, shared with the bishop since 11 Sept 2011, becomes his again, until your new rector arrives.

When a bishop’s ministry ends there is a moving and powerful liturgy in which he strips off his vestments, placing on the altar with his mitre and his staff, and walks away down the aisle and out of the cathedral in his alb and stole, a simple priest.

There’s no such liturgy for a departing incumbent and I’ve resisted the temptation to write one. Instead of leaving with the symbols of a ministry that is ending, I want to leave you with gifts that will help you to go forward in the way we have been following together for more than seven years now, and so I have two gifts to give you. If there were a fairy tale there would be three, but there you go. Both are for regular, if not every day use in the parish - (apology to Grayswood) - and both are symbols of the life of worship and faith that we share with one another and seek to share with others.

Firstly, to be placed in the prayer chapel here at St Bart’s, a votive candle stand a particularly appropriate gift for Candlemas. Lighting a candle as part of a prayer is an ancient and very modern custom. It helps us to focus and pray and is a visible sign of a place where prayer happens to those who come later.

Sometimes it’s hard to pray, to know what to pray, and afterwards we sometimes wonder if we prayed well or properly (we did - God knows what we want to ask, however vague or halting or unformed our thoughts) - having something to do and leave as a sign of our prayer can help. With the stand you have 1000 votive candles - tea lights that fit into the specially designed cups.

They, too, were blessed last night - I’m sure you’ll use them all in the course of the year.

St Christopher’s has a very beautiful copper ewer, originally used to pour water into the font during the baptism service. Unfortunately, it leaks, and can’t be mended. We have been using a large tin jug - the enamel sort you find on old wash stands. So my gift for St Christopher’s is this - a pottery jug from Grayshott which will serve the purpose as well as its tin predecessor and be less elegant but as fit for its setting as its copper one - and perhaps be used, too, for foot washing on Maundy Thursday in the years ahead.

Prayer and baptism, drawing close to God as individuals and as a community, and welcoming new members into God’s church. These are things all churches do as part of our calling. We have been doing them together, and we will go on 7

doing them in the years ahead, here in Haslemere and Grayswood, in Cheltenham, in all the places where we find ourselves worshipping, places and churches we don’t yet know. Thank you for all you have taught me about these things, for all we have learnt together. My prayer for the united benefice as I leave is simple and familiar, especially to Haslemere parish. May you continue together in Christ growing in faith serving in love and do these things for God, for one another, for the world.

May God help us to live out these prayers, promises and aspirations. May Christ walk with us everywhere we go, and may the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth and love. Amen

And Sandy gives us an update on Mary since she left: Mary started her retirement with a short trip to Lanzarote in mid February with 'yours truly' where we took the time to relax in the sun and enjoy the local cuisine. On her return to Bishops Cleeve she was able to get stuck in to organising her new home with a particular emphasis on the garden for which she is putting our gift to her to very good use. Peter Clarke has made two trips to make a design and do some planting. Mary promises to send us photos in May when it should be beautiful.

One of the best things about her new home is the coffee machine. Mary says it is just so easy and delicious. Thank you all.

To her delight, Jacob and Joshua have taken control of the property just as one would expect. Even better; Mary is starting to settle, finding a promising church, taking lovely walks with friends, exploring the local offerings and even baking two cakes. I took the opportunity to telephone her before writing this short update. Her overall assessment of the situation is that, 'it is all going worryingly well.'

The Vacancy in the United Benefice of Haslemere & Grayswood The Archdeacon set out an explanation of how a vacancy is managed and the new appointments made with his newsletter dated December 2018 (copies of which are available at the back of church). This has been partly revised and updated, due to the process having progressed, as follows:

What happens when the Rector retires?

Who is In Charge during the Vacancy?

Following the Rector’s departure, the formal running of the parish is the legal responsibility of the Area Dean and Churchwardens (the Sequestrators).

How does the parish actually function without an Incumbent?

Whilst the position of Area Dean is also vacant at present, the work is being co-ordinated by the vacancy management team who are accountable to the PCC. This consists of the churchwardens, administrator, treasurer and others who share in ministerial and administrative support. It will meet regularly to ensure things continue as normal. For good reason, the Archdeacon will ensure that no strategic decisions are taken during the time when there is no incumbent in the parish.

What if I have any questions during this period?

Please speak to the churchwardens in the first instance. They will be able to direct you to the right person.

How is our new Rector chosen?

Will there be consultation?

Yes. Initially the Archdeacon met with both the Grayswood and Haslemere PCCs, separately, to set out the process.

The most important thing was the putting together of a parish profile and person specification. This is, in effect, the document that lays out our priorities 9

looking forward and the gifts that we seek in a new leader. The compilation of this document was done by a small Parish Profile Team but following a process of wide consultation (including holding a PCC Vision evening with the Diocesan Missioner), which is facilitated by the diocese.

The post of Rector of Haslemere & Grayswood was then advertised on the ‘Pathways’ website and in the Church Times.

There were six people on the formal interview panel: The Patron (The Lord Chancellor, represented by Mrs Helen Dimmock) The Bishop of Guildford (The Rt Revd Andrew Watson) The Archdeacon of Surrey (The Venerable Paul Davies) The Area Dean of Godalming (Currently the Revd Clive Potter - Vicar of Milford) The Two Parish Representatives (Elected by the PCC, Robert Fox and Cathy Moore) The Lord Chancellor (represented by Helen Dimmock), with the agreement of the Parish Representatives, who presents the preferred candidate to the Bishop.

Interviews took place on March 12 and 13 and the PCC and officers of the parish had the opportunity of meeting the shortlisted candidates and to offer feedback.

The Bottom Line…

So when can we expect to welcome new clergy?

As soon as possible… but the process can’t be rushed! It must be noted that when a candidate for the post of Rector has been chosen, the Lord Chancellor will not allow an announcement until a DBS check is complete. This means that there is usually a delay of up to six weeks before the announcement. We await the outcome...

Moves to appoint a House for Duty Associate Priest for Grayswood are also underway, with interviews due to take place in early April.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School It certainly feels as though 2019 is flying by very quickly! This is probably because so many exciting things are happening at St Bart’s that there is hardly time to stop and take a breath!

The colder weather at the start of this term meant that the children could make their own ice sculptures. Also, a special Winter walk led to lots of awe and wonder at this beautiful season for the children in Year 1. During the snowy weather, the whole school had a wonderful time on our field working and playing together and creating various snow constructions.

In our reception classes, the children are continuing to progress with their learning and have covered a range of activities and topics including fairy tales, night time and pirates. A topic on space was a resounding success with the children finding out facts about the cosmos, exploring various constellations and even making their own using holes in black paper on a light box.

Year one have been studying significant inventors from the four countries of the UK and have invented their own machines.

Geographical skills have formed a basis for a great deal of learning in Year 2. The children have been reading aerial photographs, looking at human and physical geography, finding continents and countries around the world, designing and making travelling machines and writing postcards from the Sahara desert and Amazon rainforest.

Through the story of The Gingerbread Man, the children in Year 2 had a mini topic about materials, and had great fun making gingerbread men in a cookery lesson.

Years 3 and 4 studied the topic of Romans and investigated how the Roman Empire spread across Europe. They have used atlases to identify European countries and made a timeline of the Roman invasion. They also acted out the Roman invasion in the school grounds using their scutums (shields) which they designed and made.

Both Years 5 and 6 covered the topic of Invaders and Settlers, with a focus on the Anglo-Saxons, where the children investigated where the Angles, Saxons and Jutes came from and what the causes were behind their settlement in Britain.

In art, linked to early Bible illustrations by Anglo-Saxon monks, they made their own illuminated letters and learnt about their history.

For science, children in Year 6 learnt about the circulatory system with investigations into the purpose and relationship between the heart and the lungs. They were also very fortunate to have had two very talented parents come into the classroom and teach them, Dr Gregory (a lung specialist), Dr Jennings (a cardiologist) and his associate Darren (a paramedic), to share their knowledge and expertise. The children consolidated their learning by dissecting animal hearts, using peak flow and stethoscopes to 13

record lung capacity and heart rates and using an ECG machine to measure heart-rate and oxygen levels. They also built an electro-dough circuit to show communication between cells.

As the Spring term comes to a close we look forward to celebrating the events of Holy Week before we break up for Easter.

As ever, it is a joy and a privilege to lead such a wonderful organisation and to focus on supporting the development of such lovely children.

Visit to St. Christopher’s

by Shottermill Infants’ School Each year the 6-7 year-olds (Year 2) from Shottermill visit St. Christopher’s as part of their R.E. syllabus. They are well primed by their teachers and know what to expect, and come with a list of questions which they have to find answers to.

They are without doubt keen and genuinely interested and it is fascinating to read their ‘thank-you’ letters. Here is a small selection of these.

‘We think that Charles Spooner is a great architect and it’s amazing that the church is handmade. We learnt that some of the glass windows are very old, some are from the 1930s and the oldest is from the 1910s.’

‘We loved the hueg (sic) cross. It looked amazing. You even told us about a type of bread that represents Jesus and that Jesus was a special person.’

‘We shivered in amazement when we saw the mouse on the wall. After a while we really loved learning about Kit Tanner.’

‘We extremely liked the beaming silver cups. We liked the organ better than anything in the very big church.’

‘Thank you for letting us touch the robes. We really liked the beautiful patterns on the ceiling. Badgers (class name) really appreciate that you gave your time to us and showed us around the glamerous (sic) church.’

I look forward to next year’s visit from these very appreciative young children.

HASLEMERE George Herbert Aitken - Part 2 This is the second piece on the Reverend George Aitken who died 100 years ago. It follows on from the article written by Frances Gaiter in the last issue of our parish magazine.

There are many reasons to draw attention to the life and work of this most remarkable man and when Frankie pointed out that 2019 was the hundredth anniversary of his death we agreed that following her comprehensive synopsis/overview, I would write in some detail about George Aitken's practical approach to improving the lives of the urban poor, particularly here in Haslemere.

George Herbert Aitken was rector here for almost twenty years, from 1897 to 1917 and although he died in Lambeth, he was buried in St Bart's churchyard on Wednesday July 2nd 1919.

The Haslemere to which George and his young wife Eva came in 1897 was very different from the place it is today. The population of the civil parish at that time was about 1275 souls (based on the 1891 census) and the town centre was far smaller. West Street did not then exist, nor Chestnut Avenue, nor Bridge Road. The rectory was at Pound Corner, Church Lane led over the recently constructed railway bridge by Church Green, the L & SW Railway having been extended to Haslemere and beyond in 1859. It was the coming of the railway that led to the town's huge population increase from the 1880s onwards.

Much pollution was caused by local industry at the time; smoke and noxious fumes from the kilns of Clay Hill brick and tile works (now the Fairground carpark), mingled with the nearby smoke from household rubbish burning at the top of the hill, on what is now St Christopher's Green. Endemic health problems arose from contamination of the water table by the large quantities of horse manure, the illegal dumping of waste from the abattoir, as well as from cesspits and night soil collection.

The provision of a reliable mains water supply was still some years away. It was in 1907 that Aitken, as a member of the parish council, was able to report that the Haslemere Rural District Council was to invest in creating a reservoir and pumping station on Blackdown and in 1911 additional capacity was provided.

The first rector of Haslemere, the Reverend Sanders Etheridge had told George Aitken on his appointment that the two most pressing needs in the parish were for improved elementary education and for a permanent place of worship at the Western end of the parish. Aitken was to rise to - and go well beyond - those two challenges.

Employment for manual workers was largely seasonal, with agriculture still a large part of the local economy, but its employment was in decline due to increased mechanisation and changing farming practices. The gradual influx of city businessmen created a housing boom which provided casual work for those in the building trades, but much of that, too, was seasonal. Aitken, like many other thinking people at the time, came to the view that in fact many of the unemployed were not simply idlers or workshy but were often simply unable to find work to provide an income for their families. The idea of setting up a labour exchange was something that Aitken and his like-minded friends welcomed, and alongside that, a simple, cheap savings plan, linked to a friendly society which could pay modest pensions for the 'old deserving poor'. These local schemes came into being in 1909.

The unusually harsh winter of 1910 presented a challenge to the Haslemere Unemployment Relief Committee's Labour Exchange, as it was unable to provide any job opportunities. It led Aitken, in the parish magazine of the time, to urge his readers to inform the committee of any paid work which needed to be done and which would therefore provide employment. A slightly more recent example of one such project (dating from the great depression of the 1930s) was the building of the substantial bargate stone wall along the boundary of 'Penfolds', the eponymously named house between Sandrock and Lower Street, on the bend at Penfold Corner, opposite Tanners Lane.

The standards of housing for the working classes were abysmal and Aitken used his membership of the H.R.D.C. to press for more houses to be built. Existing legislation allowed for such expenditure but all his requests were refused and it was this intractable response which in 1911 led to the creation of a not-for17

profit company to provide good quality social housing to be let at reasonable rents.

This housing was to be Haslemere's Garden Suburb development: a scheme to build 94 workers' cottages, all built to decent standards, to be let at truly affordable rents to the Haslemere Tenants Association.

The movement to improve the living standards of the urban poor was also championed by the famous social-reformer, Octavia Hill, whom Aitken had met.

Having the support of land-owners prepared to invest in providing decent houses with uniformly high(er) standards, while also providing a reasonable rate of return, was critical to the success of the scheme.

Thus the Haslemere Tenants Association was formed and over a period of twenty years shareholders provided enough capital to build houses in Fieldway, Bridge Road and Chestnut Avenue. The second and third photos show the frontage of one of the semi-detached houses in Chestnut Avenue, this one proudly displaying a blue plaque, probably Haslemere's first. It records the donation of the house for the use of the district nurse.

This house was purchased after his death by Aitken's many friends as a memorial to his philanthropy and more specifically the concept of having district nurses.

Chestnut Avenue leads to the school, the first of the two imperatives mentioned

by Sanders Etheridge to Aitken in 1897. At that time infants were still being taught in the town hall - scarcely believable, given the size of the building! 80 boys and 120 girls were taught separately in the small Church Hill Schools (now the Link).

The 1½ acre site for the new Chestnut Avenue school was donated by Miss Hesse, whose father had been Rector of Chiddingfold and thus the curate of the Haslemere chapelry, before Haslemere was granted the status of having its own parish in 1868.

The new school was designed by Chancellor (sic) & Hall of Winchester and was on a grander scale than most church schools built at the time.

The final cost was £5,000 and the Bishop of Winchester who chaired the meeting which launched the appeal in 1898 urged Haslemere to press for good buildings as well as good, well-paid teachers.

The importance of a good education could not be over-emphasised and it was recognised that ‘Children should be educated by their surroundings...to recognise beauty and to love order’. By May 1900, 358 children had been enrolled.

The town's growing prosperity as well as size was reflected in the increase in the number of commercial and business premises (from 5 in 1897 to 38 by 1917) and this resulted in pressure to improve the roads. By 1913 most of the road surfaces in the town had been 'tarmacadamed'.

The increased population was mainly housed to the west of the old town and Wey Hill (formerly Clay Hill) was thriving. There was pressure to provide a new church and in 1902 land was bought to enable St Christopher's Church to be built.

George Aitken was seemingly a man of boundless energy and ideas. He had arrived in Haslemere at a critical time in its development. He was keen to make the community here thrive as a culturally balanced and agreeable place in which to live and work.

We shall see how those grand aims were to be realised in the third and final part of the story of George Herbert Aitken in the next issue of this magazine.

In My Garden One of the joys of Spring is watching the buds of camellias burst into flower, usually in March but sometimes, as this year, when planted in a sheltered position, in February.

These magnificent evergreen shrubs are some of the earliest to flower and our ericaceous soil enables them to thrive just about anywhere in our parish, especially when positioned in dappled light. As I walk around the town during February and March, I enjoy looking out for these resplendent swathes of colour in residents' front gardens. There are some roads around about where it seems that every other garden has at least one of these stunning shrubs with their abundant, large, deeply ruffled peony or rose-type blooms contrasted against superb glossy foliage.

Camellias are a joy to behold in any garden, even when the flowering season comes to an abrupt end, usually at the end of April; their racing green foliage provides good garden structure and an excellent partner for roses, peonies or spiraeas.

This month's thoroughly deserving star plant is my favourite camellia; the Jury's Yellow, which has an ivory centre, with cream petals on the outer layers that flower for at least four weeks in late March and throughout April. All camellias are stunning, including those with pale pink, crimson, cerise, red or white flowers but for sheer exquisite beauty, Jury's Yellow is simply sublime.

Philip Duly PS: (an April tip from our previous contributor on gardens - see page 27 ) Summer Savoury is a lovely herb and is traditionally used with all the bean family but is also superb with tomatoes. As a plant or a fresh herb it is seldom available but this tough, pretty little annual is quick and easy to grow from seed. Sow directly in the soil now, or start the seeds in a pot and plant out later without root disturbance.

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes In a Bible passage set for Ash Wednesday, I read of God’s calling the Israelites to repent - with weeping. Whilst this set the scene for a penitential Lent, it’s the word ‘weep’ that has stayed with me.

Trawling the scriptures, I found many instances of weeping. Joseph wept at his reunion with the brothers who had betrayed him; David wept inconsolably at the death of his son. Jesus wept at the grave of his friend, Lazarus. In Holy Week we recall how Peter ‘wept bitterly’ after denying his Lord; and how, on his way to the cross, Jesus told the women of Jerusalem not to weep for him but for themselves, as he foresaw the destruction of the city over which he had lamented.

The Psalmist introduces a note of hope: sorrow may be transformed into joy: ‘Weeping may endure for a night’, he said, ‘but joy comes in the morning.’

During Epiphany we gave expression to that hope, as we sang ‘mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness.’ In bereavement, the hymn writer, George Matheson, wrote along similar lines: ‘O joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to Thee.

I trace the rainbow through the rain And feel the promise is not vain, That morn shall tearless be’.

Preparing the disciples for his departure, Jesus had told them: ‘You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.’ As she wept at his tomb, Mary had no such expectation—until the Risen Lord surprised her! So the Lord comes to us , lightening our darkness; and whether in mourning, or contemplating our own departure, we hold to Jesus’ promise: ‘Because I live, you too will live.’

Outward Giving Dorothea Nattrass Tear fund supporters were asked last year why it makes a difference that Tearfund is a Christian organisation.

Hundreds replied. Many felt they could TRUST Tearfund to use money donated wisely. Close partnerships with local churches as they work with their local communities, makes this possible. For example, a village in east Uganda was destroyed by rebels, but the local church is now working with the people to rebuild it themselves, restoring water, sanitation and food supplies.

Slowly, God’s love is transforming an entire village.

The Lent Appeal is for a project, Harayli Hub in Pakistani slums.

People are employed to clear street rubbish which blights health and wellbeing, particularly of children. As much as possible is recycled. Tearfund are partnering the local Pak Mission society. Ultimately the recycling hubs will become selfsustaining. Our gifts will be an enduring investment.

An Easter Poem by John Updike (1932-2009): Seven Stanzas at Easter Make no mistake: if He rose at all it was as His body; if the cells' dissolution did not reverse, the molecules reknit, the amino acids rekindle, the Church will fall.

It was not as the flowers, each soft Spring recurrent; it was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddled eyes of the eleven apostles; it was as His flesh: ours.

The same hinged thumbs and toes, the same valved heart that-pierced-died, withered, paused, and then regathered out of enduring Might new strength to enclose.

Let us not mock God with metaphor, analogy, sidestepping, transcendence; making of the event a parable, a sign painted in the faded credulity of earlier ages: let us walk through the door.

The stone is rolled back, not papier-mâchÊ, not a stone in a story, but the vast rock of materiality that in the slow grinding of time will eclipse for each of us the wide light of day.

And if we will have an angel at the tomb, make it a real angel, weighty with Max Planck's quanta, vivid with hair, opaque in the dawn light, robed in real linen spun on a definite loom.

Let us not seek to make it less monstrous, for our own convenience, our own sense of beauty, lest, awakened in one unthinkable hour, we are embarrassed by the miracle, and crushed by remonstrance. *** John Updike was brought up as an American Lutheran and he seems very matter of fact about the resurrection. If you’re going to believe, Updike seems to say, then believe. Stop trying to soften the edges of Christian faith or make it more acceptable or confuse the issue with biochemical terms. And I think he’s right “modernize” the resurrection - by making it a parable, the disciples’ dream or psychological experience - and you lose something essential, not just of the story, but of the very promise of God to remake everything as real and tangible and alive as God made it in the first place.

The image from the Greek icon Anastasis (Resurrection) shows Christ actually straining to pull Adam and Eve from the clutches of death and hell, reflecting the sensibilities Updike expresses in his poem, perhaps.

Chicken breasts stuffed with spinach and dates Linda Donaldson Takes 20 minutes and feeds 4

1 Onion, large and thinly sliced Garlic, if liked, 2 cloves, sliced Olive oil Ready-to-eat dates, 4 finely chopped Spinach, 200g. chopped Ground cumin, 2 tsp Skinless, boneless chicken breasts, 4 Runny honey, 2 tbsp.

Green beans, to serve Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180/gas 6 Cook the onion and garlic in a non-stick frying pan with a splash of olive oil and some seasoning for 5 minutes.

Then add the dates, spinach and half the cumin. Cook for another minute or two.

Cut the chicken breasts lengthways so they open like a book.

Divide the stuffing between the breasts and put in a shallow baking dish. Rub the remaining cumin over the chicken and season.

Drizzle over the honey and then bake for 20 minutes.

Serve with the green beans

It’s a Small World…! ‘

The following is an extract from an email Janet sent the editor: ‘A very long time ago I had a friend called Pat who lived in Devon. Eventually she had a very nice baby called Margaret. Shortly after that we lost touch.’

(Philip Duly fills in: ‘Janet’s parents were Margaret’s godparents and they attended our wedding. We saw them on a fairly regular basis until they, sadly, passed away).

‘Twenty years ago my mother died. Margaret came to her funeral - and we chatted and started sending Xmas cards. She married Philip Duly, but we never met him. In due course they moved from Stansted to Haslemere. Then you sent me your magazine and I saw who it was that was writing your gardening articles for you.

One day there was an email from Philip saying they would be over this way and would like to meet up, so we invited them to lunch. I then had a good deal of fun at his expense by showing I knew about his writing activities. ‘Do you know who you displaced in the gardening slot of the Haslemere Link magazine?’, I asked him, etc. etc. He was mystified - until I revealed all.

But it really is quite a coincidence because I only know four people out of the entire population of Haslemere!’

April Planning News Readers of the Parish Profile will have seen our commitment to working in partnership with the community and to raise our profile with the people of Haslemere.

Readers may also be aware of the success of the new station car park, to the extent that it is full to overflowing by mid-morning on most days as well as concerns regarding the future of the car park opposite St Christopher’s Green.

Thought is now being given to how the parish could support the community with this real issue, whilst at the same time bringing financial and other benefits to the parish.

One idea is to develop an underground car park under the church and gardens at St Christopher’s, providing over 200 spaces during the day, with flexible space being available for youth activities in the evening.

Regular members of the congregation will be able to use their HALO cards (Haslemere Loyalty Offers) for free parking during the week and we hope that this incentive may encourage more people to attend church.

(There have been some issues with the roll-out of the HALO card which was announced this time last year).

Where did the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs come from?

The Easter bunny is a gentle figure of folklore, who seems to have first come from the German Lutherans. They depicted him as a rabbit who brought coloured Easter eggs to children. The idea of an egg-giving hare went over to the US in the 18th century, when Protestant German immigrants in the Pennsylvania Dutch area told their children about the ‘Osterhase’. Hase means hare, and according to the legend, only good children found the hare’s gifts of coloured eggs, placed in the nests that they had made in their caps and bonnets before Easter.

The Easter bunny became a prominent symbol of Easter. Rabbits, prolific procreators, are an ancient symbol of new life. Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and resurrection.

Decorating Easter eggs dates back to at least the 13th century. One possible reason for the custom was that in those days eggs were forbidden during the Lenten season. So people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, and then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

God in the Arts The National Gallery at Trafalgar Square in London houses one of the finest collections of European paintings in the world, with some 2,300 works spanning the centuries. During this year we are journeying through the gallery to explore one of those treasures each month. By the Rev Michael Burgess.

The Mond Crucifixion –

by Raphael This month’s painting in the National Gallery is known as the Mond Crucifixion. It has an interesting history, because Ludwig Mond, the German born scientist and industrialist, offered to lend the painting to the Gallery in 1892. The trustees for some reason declined the offer.

Ludwig Mond was undeterred and at his death in 1909 he bequeathed to the Gallery over 40 paintings. It was an amazingly generous gift, and included this Crucifixion by Raphael.

It belongs to the artist’s early years and was painted when he was just 20, for a church altarpiece in Urbino in 1503. On Good Friday we hear those words from Lamentations, ‘Is it nothing to you who pass by? – look and see.’ We might look on the cross of Jesus and see a sign of agony and death. But here in the Mond Crucifixion, all seems serene and still. It is a far cry from the harshness and cruelty of the Gospel accounts. Look at the angels with their ribbons and feet resting on the clouds, the hands and feet of the four bystanders so delicately painted, and beyond, the softly lit Umbrian landscape with a river, trees and low hills stretching away into the distance.

It is as if Raphael has frozen this moment of death on his canvas to tell us that here is an enduring message of love and generosity for Mary, John, Mary Magdalene and Jerome gathered below. Our Lady and John look at us, inviting us to discover there the solemn beauty that moves their lives and that can move us.

In our worship on Good Friday we encounter this paradox of the cross – a sign of suffering and death, but a sign also of generosity. We can think of the generosity of Ludwig Mond, the generosity of Raphael sharing his gifts with us, but above all the generosity of our Prince of Glory. Here, in the words of Isaac Watts’ hymn, we see how ‘love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.’

The League of Friends of Haslemere Hospital AGM will be held on May 22 at 7.30pm in the Hunter Centre, Grayswood Road, Haslemere (Please drive as you would to the hospital, and there is a carpark on the right opposite the hospital entrance and then a very short path through to the Grayswood Road and the Hunter Centre).

For our hospital during the year, the major items we have purchased are a Vein Viewer, an Optical Coherence Scanner for eye health which can identify macular conditions, diabetes etc, and a Tovatel Magic Table!!

The Tovatel Magic Table has been developed following a research programme involving people with dementia and learning difficulties.

Our Chairman says ‘’I could see this Magic Table really helping brain injured and stroke patients and, I think, this is an area being further developed. It’s not often a scientifically-researched tool is used in hospitals and other settings to provide fun and health gain for all, but this one seems to.’’

There will be wine and nibbles afterwards so do please come and join us, and support your local hospital. Membership leaflets are located in waiting rooms and around the town.

April Spring Delights - 6 to 20 April, 2018 The signs of Spring are popping up everywhere and there is plenty to look forward to at the Museum with a host of fun family events and workshops taking place throughout the Easter holidays. On Monday 8 April there will be a special opening from 11am to 1pm for families with children who have an Autistic Spectrum Condition to come along and enjoy the Museum free from the hustle and bustle of the public. The galleries will be open to explore in a calm and relaxed environment, and there will be an opportunity to handle special artefacts too. Free entry, donations welcome Discover more about the Egyptians at a family event on Thursday 11 April with a fun-filled morning of hieroglyphs and ancient Egyptian art. Don’t miss the family event on Tuesday 16 April! This is a lovely opportunity for families to get creative with lots of Easter arts and crafts activities to enjoy. Look out for the garden trail, where children will be rewarded with a chocolate treat, when they find the characters hidden throughout the grounds. Bluebells Cancer Support Centre at Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary Burrows Lea, Hook Lane, Shere, GU5 9AL Bluebells is a friendly, sharing group for anyone affected by cancer.

We laugh a lot, cry a little, share experiences and support each other.

Do come along one Thursday to see for yourself!

We meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 11am— 1pm ending with a relaxation session.
