Dear Friends For several years I had in my possession the mortal remains of a deceased archbishop. How many people do you know who could claim such a thing?

Nicholas Heath was Archbishop of York in the sixteenth century but was deposed by Queen Elizabeth because he disagreed with her ecclesiastic policies.

He was buried in the chancel of my previous church of St Lawrence Chobham.

We didn’t get to know each other too well.

Ordinary parish priests such as I generally don’t get to hang-out much with archbishops, alive or dead. That said, I did once have the pleasant experience of having breakfast with Archbishop Rowan Williams, along with a few other students when he visited my theological college. I can’t remember much of what was said, but I do recall him being very friendly and accommodating.

I am however going to meet Archbishop Justin Welby in September, and actually you can too. From 24th- 27th September he is going to be here in the Guildford Diocese for what is called a ‘visitation’. You can find details of his movements elsewhere in this Link magazine, but the main date to be aware of is his afternoon visit to Godalming on Sunday 26th September. He is planning to speak of his faith, and how he encourages faith in others too. The ministry of the church has been shared like never before over the months of the pandemic, and now may be the time to be open and invitational to many who have found themselves asking questions of faith and life. The offering is simply this, ask those around you if they would like to hear what the Archbishop has to say. I myself will be inviting several people.

Since March 2020 I’ve created about twenty-five school assembly videos, in support of the school’s Christian values and virtues. Victoria has made quite a crop too - a new experience for her. It’s been a fun thing to do which the 3

children enjoy, if their comments to me in the supermarket are anything to go by! That said, I’m looking forward to getting back into the school in September.

I do wonder what the parents must think about all this. They know St Bartholomew’s is a faith school, but in the months of lockdown much of the Christian teaching they hear at school was taken into their homes.

From mid-September I’m going to begin running a short Christian nurture course called Start!, with the aim of offering school parents the chance to find out more of what they have been hearing in their homes. I’ll be working with All Saints Grayswood Church and school also.

As we look ahead into 2021 and 2022, I’ll be sharing more with you of our plans and visons for care in the community and amongst families. I see so much potential here in Haslemere, and so much opportunity. Do please join in and be open to some new ideas alongside all the well-loved traditions of our faith.

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Visit to the Guildford Diocese September 2021 In late September, Archbishop Justin Welby will be visiting the Guildford Diocese. From 24th-27th September the archbishop will be attending various events to which any members of our congregations are invited. This is also an opportunity for us to invite guests to hear a message about faith in Jesus Christ.

There are two different events. One is for church members, and one is for guests, so please read carefully.

An Evening with Justin Welby All church members are invited to come to an event on Friday 24th September 8pm at the Lakeside Centre, Camberley, where he will speak on the future of the local church and take part in an extended Q and A session. This will be a time of encouragement, support and thanksgiving for all that parishes have been doing during the pandemic. This event is aimed first and foremost at existing church members.

The Big Questions Event The Archbishop will be visiting each deanery for a Big Questions Event, to which we can invite guests who we feel may like to hear about the Christian faith in a ‘non-churchy’ way. This is a time of great opportunity as people emerge from a pandemic which has shaken the foundations of our worldly security. They are wrestling with uncertainty, asking big questions and increasingly open to faith.

The Archbishop will spend most of his time responding to questions, which he does with candour and humour, and we are confident that this will engage our audiences and encourage them to explore the source of his hope - faith in Jesus Christ. No question will be ‘off limits’.

The Big Questions event for the Godalming Deanery will be on Sunday 26th September at 1:30pm at Prior’s Field School.

It was so wonderful to have the First Steps team back together again for our First Steps Summer Party! Sophie and I would like to thank you all for your hard work, both in the planning and organising before the party, and on the day itself - everybody worked together to make the day a success! It was so lovely to meet so many new families and to welcome back old ones who have grown up so much in the time that we have been apart – the church was full of smiling happy faces, both children and adults alike! We are very excited to be returning to First Steps on Monday 13th September and look forward to welcoming all then, but in the meantime we wish you all a fantastic summer break.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School Every year the churches of St Bartholomew and St Christopher present the children who leave us at the end of Year 6 with a Youth Bible. We would like to thank the Parish for the bibles and for the continued support it gives to our school.

Our article for this edition has been written by the current Head Boy and Head Girl in Year 6 for a different perspective of school life.

I am very proud of all the children at our school and wish our Year 6 pupils and their families all the very best for the future as they start their prospective secondary schools.

Our Time at St Bart’s St Bart’s is a brilliant school. Our values help us with our learning. They are Believe, Achieve, Respect, Trust and Succeed. It helps children at St Barts to live life in all its fullness. Being Head Boy and Head Girl this year has helped us with values such as responsibility in helping lead events in the school. The school normally takes part in a lot of competitions such as Confederation sports, District sports, an eco-competition, and local Haslemere competitions only naming a few.

Some events we have which occur each year are: Break the rules day, World book day, sports day, business enterprise and many more! Another fun thing about being Head Boy and Head Girl has been getting to show the new parents around the school, which is quite a big responsibility.

Our topics in Year 6 have been especially good this year. ‘A Child’s War’, where we learnt about a child’s life in World War 2, ‘Frozen Kingdom’, where we studied Antarctica, the Titanic and the Race to the South Pole, the ‘Gallery Rebels’ topic where we learnt about different art styles and artists and more recently the ‘ID’ topic where we learnt about biometrics, viruses and identity, including a day where we had to figure out which teacher had committed a crime over our recent scarecrow competition.

We have enjoyed our time at St Barts as Head Boy and Head Girl and we hope every future child of the school has a brilliant time.

Spotlight on…

Rita Bicknell MBE Gareth David After leaving her native Yorkshire at the age of 15, Rita Bicknell has been a stalwart member of the local community and of St. Christopher’s Church for more than 60 years, and was awarded an MBE for services to the community in 2004.

What brought you to Haslemere?

“I left Yorkshire with a friend and came to Haslemere at the age of 15 in 1955 to work with children and got a job at The Grange in Hindhead, which was a home for children with special needs.

I stayed there for two years and then moved to a residential nursery in Hindhead called Grey Gables, which was run by Surrey County Council, to train as a nursery nurse.

“After that I went to the maternity unit at St. Luke’s Hospital in Guildford to work as a nursery nurse and got married to my husband Frank (who she had met at a dance in Haslemere) in 1961. I then went to work at Holly Ridge Residential Nursery, a care home for children which was at the top of Sandrock (now a housing development).

“My first son, Nigel, was born in 1963 (now a popular local postman) and my second son, Howard, in 1966 (now General Manager of Haslemere Hall).

Setting up a nursery school “Together with the friend, Sylvia, who had come down from Yorkshire with me, we saw the need for a community nursery school and St. Christopher’s Church had a hall across the road from the church (close to what is now the Haslemere Youth Hub).

“So the two of us started a nursery in that building, which we ran until the church sold the building, before moving to the scout and guide headquarters behind the tyre and battery centre.

“Then, because I had a group of parents who were members of the Catholic Church, a hall was built at Our Lady of Lourdes in Weydown Road and we moved up there and called it Weydown Nursery School (which it still is). I retired from the nursery in 2004.

Involvement with St. Christopher’s “I’ve been involved with St. Christopher’s throughout my 66 years in Haslemere and both my boys were christened there. I’ve served time on the Parochial Church Council and am now on the St. Christopher’s Committee, helping with the First Steps play group and with events that are organised by the church.

“The church community has helped me a lot and I find it helpful and reassuring to belong. I think the church community is stronger than it has been in the past and it is good that the two churches are together - I think lockdowns have 12

helped bring us closer together and hopefully we can keep that spirit alive as society opens up again.

Being awarded an MBE “This was a great surprise and I still can’t believe why I got it! It was for work in the community - you don’t know that people are nominating you and I didn’t have a clue until the letter came! The nominations came from parents of children I had cared for and also from the Action Medical Research for Children, which I have been a member of for about 30 years.

Current charitable activities “I help with the MacMillan Charity, mainly by arranging coffee mornings at the moment as we have been very limited in what we can do in terms of fund raising.

“I am also involved with a charity called Home Start, which helps families with problems who have children under the age of five, such as single parents or in cases where there is suspected abuse taking place.

“That has been difficult over the past year because we have only been able to communicate with families by phone, not by visiting them, and even now we can only see them outside.

Reflections on our town “Haslemere has changed a lot in the time I have been here and has grown in so many ways, in some ways for the better. I think it is losing its small town identity, because it is such a commuter town.

“Community spirit has grown during the pandemic and people have really bonded together. There was a time when you didn’t always know your next-door neighbour and that has certainly changed - volunteering has been a great success story during the lockdowns.”

Mary Kirkman’s 100th birthday June 18th was the day Mary Kirkman celebrated the centenary of her birth in Burma. She has spent most of her adult life in England, having met her husband, Charles, when they were undergraduates in Oxford during the war.

They came to live in Haslemere after working abroad for the Foreign and Colonial Service and Mary started teaching at The Royal Naval School. She ran St. Christopher’s Choir for many, many years and wrote Nativity plays performed at the church.

About 30 of her friends assembled outside her house on the morning of her special day to present her with flowers and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘For she’s a jolly good fellow!’

We hope to hold a party for her in St. Christopher’s garden after the morning service in early September when the church reopens, to thank her for everything she’s done for the church.

The Hunter Centre Garden Party On Tuesday 20th July, The Hunter Centre held their Annual Anniversary Garden Party.

Despite the hot weather everyone enjoyed a delicious cream tea courtesy of Waitrose in Haslemere.

Entertainment was provided by Lucienne and Lawrence. A raffle was also held on the day with some donations from The Factory Shop.

Haslemere Festival May 2021 Contributed by Melanie Odell To be or not to be (present)! That was the question ……. that many Festival goers were asking as we all gingerly stepped out of the COVID government lockdown on May 17th - the same date as the start of the Festival.

The doors were open, and maintaining social distancing with masks adorned, the Haslemere Hall, Haslemere Museum and St. Bartholomew’s Church welcomed full houses to many of their events. For those less inclined to venture out or who preferred to stay at home the new option of a Zoom ticket was welcomed and many took advantage of this.

Despite the uncertainty of restrictions, the Festival offered a full programme for all ages with concerts, talks and family events. Scarecrows started to appear in gardens and on forecourts, entering a competition organised by Haslemere Rotary, and the British Tapestry Group hung their exhibition in readiness for a talk during the week.

Our local residents enthralled us with tales of life as a Special Constable, a stroll around historic Haslemere, diving for wrecks and investigating HMT Pine, searching for whales, describing the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, the making of Haslemere from 1221, the history of the theatre from 1556 and Gerard Manley Hopkins’ family life in Haslemere. How fortunate are we to have such interesting and learned locals!

Local societies supported the Festival as well. The Arts Society held a talk on Rodin and 19th century sculpture, the Haslemere Art Society’s President entertained by painting a portrait of our Town Crier 16

and the young Haslemere String Competition Finalists enthralled us with a concert in tandem with professionals showcasing their amazing skills. In addition to our younger musicians, the Festival enjoyed jazz, soloists, a string quartet, dance and a musical.

The history and military talks were well attended, both in person and online, with subjects covering Windsor Castle, the Battle of the Somme, and Guernica

by Picasso, one of the great anti-war icons.

As is the custom, anniversary talks abounded and this year we celebrated, Ralph Vaughan Williams, The Rosetta Stone, The White Ship, Gilbert White, Anne Frank, the Partition of India, The Mary Celeste, and Tutankhamun. Such a wide variety of talks with knowledgeable and fascinating speakers.

We welcomed back some familiar faces with the Rt Revd Christopher Herbert talking about the history of the King James Bible, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt looking to the future of the NHS, Julia Donaldson enthralling young and old alike with her Gruffalo and good Festival friends, Mates and Godfrey, finishing the fortnight with their favourite memories of Flanders and Swann.

So, despite the desperate circumstances, thanks to Festival organiser Hamish Donaldson and his team, Haslemere was able to enjoy a fortnight of information, culture and fun to celebrate our first steps out of lockdown.

Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes Talking of masks (which we do frequently) I’m reminded of the time when Moses felt that he should don one. He had been ‘talking with the Lord’ on the Mountain. When he descended, his face was radiant. Though unaware of it himself, the Israelites were awestruck and wouldn’t come near him. For their sake he veiled his face whenever he talked with them.

Fast forward to the Gospels, where we find Jesus on a high mountain with Peter, James and John. Whilst conversing with a visionary Moses and Elijah, he was transfigured, and his face shone like the sun. The incident is picked up in one of our best-loved hymns: ‘Be still for the glory of the Lord/is shining all around,/ how awesome is the sight/our radiant king of light!’ In his Revelation, St. John calls on one simile after another to describe his vision of the exalted Lord. Once again we’re told his face was like the sun ‘shining with full force’.

At present, I'm particularly drawn to the concept of radiance. A text-card marks the place in my bedside book. Quoting from a psalm, it tells me to ‘Look to the Lord and be radiant.’ (Who - me? I’ve been glad of the mask sometimes to hide my crossness!) But how am I to display this radiance that comes from the Lord?

Only, I think, through prayer and contemplation. “Come,” my heart says, “Seek his face!” With the Psalmist we may respond, ”Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

As Christians we are meant to shine as lights in the world. More than once I’ve heard someone say they were drawn to Christ by what they’ve seen of him in another person. That person may, in fact, have been in a time of adversity - and yet the beauty of Jesus has been seen in them.

O God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness: shine in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

St Bartholomew's Church as we know it was dedicated in July 1871, 150 years ago.

Five years after that the Mothers' Union had its modest beginning at the Rectory in Old Alresford.

Mary Sumner, who had the idea to get young mothers together to encourage them in the Christian upbringing of their children, lived until 11th August 1921 92 years. So this year we commemorate the centenary of the death of the founder of the movement which spread across the world. Haslemere was one of the early branches, founded in 1889 with 34 members. I would love to see our small membership grow to match that number.

We have been meeting irregularly recently, of necessity, but maintain our sense of fellowship and do all we can to support Diocesan activities and international grass roots projects.

Today the scope of the work of MU has widened considerably.

As a Member or Friend you can: Strengthen communities all over the world (e.g. helping women in the DRC escape the poverty trap).

Help the most disadvantaged at home (e.g. Women's refuges , ‘Away from it all’ holidays).

Shape how we advocate for the rights of families (MU is asked for opinions by our Government).

Build supportive, loving relationships (e.g. Passionate about Parenting classes).

Develop your own relationship with God (e.g. Retreats and Prayer Days).

Watch out for a Summer of Hope event in August. Date to be advised.

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt Thanks are due to Robert Fox and Richard Reincke who masterminded and personally executed repairs to the paths in St Bartholomew’s churchyard. The path leading to the The Link was particularly uneven and, in total, Robert and Richard repaired 14 potholes. There is now a safer route for everyone as we resume use of The Link after the 10am Communion.

Weeds encroaching on the paths continue to be a problem. Some weed clearance has been carried out near to the lych gate, but selective weedkilling more widely would seem inevitable. A trial has been carried out on the side path leading to the Vestry with some success.

In the June/July edition of this magazine, Katherine Jessel provided a fascinating article to commemorate the rebuilding of St Bartholomew’s in 1870/71.

This was largely to accommodate the growing population of the town - driven by the coming of the railway in 1859. The vital role played by the then new Rector of the Parish, the Revd Sanders Overall view of Revd Etheridge’s Etheridge, is given full prominence damaged grave in the article.

A number of parishioners have pointed out that although the Revd Etheridge is buried in St Bartholomew’s churchyard, his grave is damaged and currently lying down in the grass (see photographs). It would be fitting, in this 150th anniversary year of the rebuilding of the church, if we could somehow raise the funds for the repair and restoration of this important grave. Any suggestions as to how we should go about this would be gratefully received.

Given such a wet June, it is not surprising that everything garden-related seems to have increased in size at an alarming rate. So, it is probably time for a further churchyard working party. Once a date has been set, notice will be given in the weekly news sheet.

In My Garden Philip Duly I recently had the sad experience of saying goodbye to my wonderful garden of 20 years. When I moved to my previous address, the garden was well-stocked but very new. Most of the shrubs and plants had been in situ for less than four years and were therefore in their infancy. I made very few changes during the first twelve months, feeling it was disrespectful to dramatically change the shape and character of the garden that the previous owner had lovingly developed. Only after about ten years did I feel that the garden was becoming more of my own creation. It was only then that I developed the confidence to make more significant changes to the planting scheme.

Despite having an open outlook and wonderful views over the town towards Hindhead, the garden was relatively small, so scale and proportion were of vital importance. I therefore felt compelled to ensure all the shrubs were meticulously maintained to ensure my borders had sufficient light and breadth to flourish. It was sad saying goodbye to the garden but as one door closes, a new garden gate has opened.

My new garden is somewhat more established but with greater scope for creative change. It also contains a very different collection of plants, some of which I am struggling to identify, and which I may have to rely on good friends to help me recognize and understand. So a new chapter of gardening beckons but one that is not without challenges, not least to resist the temptations to make too many hasty changes or to mistakenly replicate my previous garden.

An exciting challenge awaits, but one that is not devoid of trepidation and I can’t wait to identify my first star plant from my new garden in next month’s edition.

Gardeners’ Questions Q: Dom and I have been debating: ‘Can you use any old potatoes going to seed to grow more, or must one buy good stock from seed suppliers?’

A:

Ideally seed potatoes- usually quite inexpensive to buy - should be used to grow potatoes. Old potatoes that have gone to seed in a cupboard or bag will not yield the same quantity or quality of potatoes, if you are tempted to try. Growers will sort the potatoes to ensure they are of equal size and they will be sold ready for planting. They will also consist of one of the popular high-yielding varieties that are more rewarding to grow. You can use old potatoes that have ‘gone to seed’ and grown tubers, but it could be a false economy as they may produce lots of leaves and a very low yield of fresh potatoes.

The Last Day of Summer

I slowly drew back the curtain to focus on the day The sky was blue and cloudless, perfect in every way I felt the sun against my face; I strained my eyes to see The distant hills and wooded slopes just waiting there for me On this September morning, I knew what I must do Autumn was approaching fast, the summer almost through I closed the door behind me and descended through the trees Past a field of scarlet poppies swaying in the breeze Suddenly I glimpsed the Thames, glistening down below I found the ancient towpath and decided where to go From Goring Gap to South Stoke, an enchanting three mile hike To my rewarding destination, the trusty Perch and Pike The occasional cabin cruiser passed me along the way Everyone seemingly having fun on this last summer day Dying leaves and shiny conkers fell slowly one by one Upon a wall a drowsy cat lay soaking up the sun

I meandered into South Stoke, a sleepy, tranquil place I spotted the Perch and Pike ahead and quickened up my pace I sat about the garden from two o’clock till three Eager to explore the lane that stretched out in front of me I passed half-timbered cottages, thatched and black and white Behind old gates lay sun-drenched lawns and to my delight Colourful cottage gardens, packed full of purple flowers The perfect way to spend the summer’s final hours

I came upon the tiny church and peeped behind the door A field mouse looked bewildered as it ran across the floor I signed the book and made my way slowly up the aisle I thanked God for this beautiful day, lingering for a while I walked around the churchyard watching the season change And as I left I glanced behind me, feeling a little strange For I told myself that one day soon I’d be coming back again I said farewell to South Stoke and wandered off down the lane 26

Flower Ladies’ Outing Organised by: Frances Reinke Photography: Lucy Manley-Cooper The flower ladies of both St Bart’s and St C’s and friends had a great trip to the Garden Museum near Lambeth Palace to see the exhibition devoted to Constance Spry. This was a huge step for most of us to travel and get out and about after being not able to for so long!

What fun we had - so much so we are planning our next outing to Winchester Cathedral Flower Festival in September...no stopping us now!

An Image for the Season

Andrei Rublev’s Icon of The Trinity ca. 1425-27

In the orthodox tradition, an icon is a spiritual window into the divine, where we can contemplate the glory and mystery of God. Icons are not just canvas and paint, but have a sacred quality in their own right. They represent a historical event in scripture or in the life of a saint.

This icon depicts three angels who visited Abraham at the Oaks of Mamre (Genesis 18:1-15). From the early days of the Christian Church, this story has been interpreted as foreshadowing the revelation of God as three agents sharing one entity: the Holy Trinity. Meditating on the image as a whole: •

The golden background represents God’s light, the aura that surrounds Him (Revelation 21:23) 28

The three figures have identical faces The relationship between them forms a circle, the figures leaning into each other There is a chalice or cup in their midst of this holy circle of love. All that God does is done by the Trinity equally Both hands clasp his staff, a symbol of authority.

A house behind is God’s dwelling place.

The icon has been restored several times over the centuries, and the original colour rendering is far from certain. There are alternative interpretations of the identity of each figure as a result. With the figure on the left, the blue garment may represent humanity and the world - both sea and sky mirroring each other. The figure who may be Christ takes on a human, worldly character, almost covered with a shimmering ‘ethereal’ robe.

We may remember a promise of Jesus in John 14:23. ‘Those who love me will keep my word and my Father will love them - and we will come to them and make our home with them’.

The central figure may represent the Father, with gold to represent perfection, wholeness and the ultimate source of truth.

The tree behind perhaps represents the tree of life in Revelation 22:2, ‘and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations’.

The green figure on the right perhaps represents the Spirit, the colour said to represent endless fertility and fecundity. According to Hildegard of Bingen, this shows ‘a divine aliveness that makes everything blossom and bloom in endless shades of green’. To quote John 16:13, ‘when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth: for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever He hears, and He will declare to you the things that are to come’.

The three eat and drink with infinite hospitality and utter enjoyment. There is also a gap at the front of the table for a fourth observer - You! According to Richard Rohr’s book*, ‘God is the holy one present in the dynamic and loving action of the Three’. They invite us to share at the divine table since they do not like to eat alone. He concludes: ‘I want you to take this image into yourself.

I invite you to recognise that this table is not reserved exclusively for the Three, nor is the divine circle dance a closed circle: we’re all invited in’.

Space here obviously limits a full exploration of the icon’s significance, but I hope that it will motivate some to buy the book to explore questions about the nature of God, love, grace and forgiveness through the lens of Trinitarian spirituality, encouraging a living relationship with God. Summer Salad and Fruits I feel that we are all in need of something light, summery and tasty to cheer us up, so here are a couple of suggestions...

Watermelon, Feta, Cucumber and Mint Salad Serves 6 For the salad:½ cucumber ½ small watermelon, peeled, deseeded and cut into 2 cm. cubes 200g. feta cheese, crumbled into small cubes 50g. pitted black olives in oil, halved Small bunch of mint, chopped For the dressing:4 tbsp. olive oil (or reserved from the olives) Juice of ½ lemon Peel the cucumber, cut in half lengthways and, using a teaspoon, scoop out and discard the seeds.

Slice into crescent shapes.

Layer the watermelon, cucumber, feta and olives in a bowl, repeat again, then sprinkle with the chopped mint.

For the dressing, whisk together the oil and lemon juice, season and pour into the bowl. Served chilled.

Fresh Peaches baked in Marsala with Mascarpone Cream.

Serves 6 For the peaches:1½ oz.(40g.) caster sugar 6 firm ripe peaches 10 fl.oz. (275 ml.) sweet Marsala wine 1-inch cinnamon stick 1 vanilla pod 1 rounded teaspoon arrowroot

For the mascarpone cream:4 rounded tablespoons mascarpone cheese 4 rounded tablespoons fromage frais A few drops of vanilla extract 1 dessertspoon caster sugar Pre-heat the oven to 350F (180C) Begin by halving the peaches and removing their stones, then place the halves in a bowl, pour boiling water over them and, after 30 seconds, drain them and slip off their skins. Now place the peach halves in a shallow baking dish, mix the sugar and Marsala in a jug and pour it over the peaches. Add the cinnamon stick and vanilla pod to the dish, then place on the centre shelf of the oven and bake without covering for 35-40 minutes. Then remove the peaches from the oven and drain off all the juices into a small saucepan. Mix the arrowroot with a little cold water and then add it to the saucepan and whisk over a gentle heat until slightly thickened. This will happen as soon as it reaches simmering point. Then pour it back over the peaches and leave to cool. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours to allow the flavour to develop fully.

To make the mascarpone cream, simply beat all the ingredients together thoroughly and pile into a pretty serving bowl to hand round separately.

What’s on at Haslemere Museum August and September ~ Exhibitions Heath Robinson Exhibition 3 July - 28 August William Heath Robinson was an artist whose work, whether in his well-known humorous drawings or his illustrations for Kipling, Shakespeare or children's stories, is integral to British cultural heritage. His name entered the lexicon as early as 1912 and is still in daily use to describe the kind of ad hoc contraptions that featured in many of his cartoons.
