Dear Friends Clearly what you all need in this month’s edition of The Link is an update about what I’ve been doing in the Rectory garden during the long, light evenings since March. Great industries have been set up in the name of Christ - well perhaps not with such divine power, but good all the same!

A new pond has been constructed with a fountain, ornamental stones, a terrace with a swinging chair and great variety of aquatic plants (the dog likes to swim in it). I’ve plumbed in a 50 metre water link to the bottom of the garden so I can better cultivate things down the far end, revived the electrics in the shed and turned it into a workshop, painted everything, trimmed everything, regrassed large areas, deer-proofed the boundaries, and created a wild-flower meadow. There is still more to do - but isn’t there always? My current project is to prepare the very bottom of the garden for growing tree saplings from seeds, so that I can provide them to local schools for environmental projects. I even floated the idea of getting a couple of little pigs to keep in a pen down the bottom, but Mrs Bessant said no. To ensure I don’t grind myself down into the dirt I added to my collection of garden power tools to help me get it all under control. Surely every man needs more tools for his workshop? Lockdown projects - what fun it has all been. But now the-times- they-are-a changing…

As I sit to write in the first weeks of July there is a furious amount of activity going on towards re-starting gathered church services, besides school services, children’s activities, funerals, weddings, baptisms and everything else besides. It’s not just a case of unlocking the doors and getting on as before, because the hygiene and distancing rules dictate that everything has to be considered from a safety point of view. There is no compromise on that, so when you do return you can have high confidence that we are doing all we can to provide a safe environment. All being well, we plan to begin on 2nd August with 8:00am and 10:00am services.

I’m sure you won’t be surprised when I tell you that there will be restriction on numbers for services, so you shall need to book-in. Keep a sharp eye on the parish website and the Sunday Notes sheet for emerging details, and I’ll be making plenty of verbal announcements too. Another important area for us is to commit to continuing the live streaming of Sunday services, so those unable to be in the churches can still be part of the worship. There is a technical project underway to achieve that, which is well in-hand. The leadership team here in the parish have put aside July for planning and testing everything, so over the next three weeks there is much to do. Please pray for us and our efforts.

Our wonderful Creator God is really the one who makes all my clunky garden efforts grow into something beautiful. At best I am just His labourer. That truth counts for churches regathering too. We can shift the chairs around, but nothing will work unless God fills the churches with his Spirit. I am reminded that activity alone is never enough in God’s Kingdom. Hope, prayer and openness to what God wants to do is the order of things right now, and long may it stay that way. I enjoy being busy and active, but it’s those slow quiet times which achieve the most. Most of you know that better than I do.

I am so looking forward to welcoming you back through the doors again. Just a little while longer now. Thank you all for your patience and encouragement.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School Year 6 Leavers’ Service

On Wednesday 15 July 2020 St Bartholomew’s Primary School welcomed back Year 6 children for their farewell celebration assembly.

Traditionally there are a series of Leavers’ events planned for the last few weeks of their school life at St Bart’s, including a service with other local schools at Guildford Cathedral and a celebration service at St Bart’s Church with the whole school and Year 6 parents in attendance. This year, of course, was very different.

Since June the children had been attending school for a couple of days each week but had been kept to their own class ‘bubbles’. This assembly therefore was an opportunity for all of Year 6 to see each other again and celebrate together.

The morning started with the children moving round a series of prayer stations, much as they would have done in the Cathedral service. Each activity gave them an opportunity to reflect and share their hopes and fears about the transition to secondary school, and ways to prepare.

Parents arrived for the second part of the service, with speeches from the Head Teacher and Year 6 teachers, during which all the children were recognised for their achievements. Before handing out the bibles which had been so generously provided by the Parish, Rev Chris also spoke to the children and brought along his own Year 6 bible which he had kept.

The service ended with the singing of ‘One More Step’ and the school prayer and then an ice cream from Dylan’s van which happened to turn up!

Although it has not been the way the children had hoped to spend their last term at St Bart’s, it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate what they have achieved and to look back on all the great memories from the last seven years.

Good-bye from Chloe Adam Dear All, As it comes to a rather strange end to my three year placement in Haslemere, I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness you have shown me. My time here has grown me both professionally and personally and each of you have played a role in that, for which I will always be grateful.

Looking back, it is hard to say what I particularly enjoyed, as I can honestly say I enjoyed it all - Messy Church, Youth groups, Soul Survivor, working at Woolmer Hill and the Royal School... to name a few! Getting to know you all and the young people here has been such a blessing and I shall miss you all.

I hope to see you all in the coming months as I prepare to start my new job as a Pastoral and Learning Support Assistant nearby.

Five Miles As The Budgie Flies A short story about a budgerigar that went missing a couple of weeks ago and the miraculous recovery of her three days later, over five miles away.

The story is made up from two accounts: those of Thomas and Amelia. Amelia is a school friend of Thomas whose mum helped find Stormzie again.

1: Lost

One sunny morning, I was playing with Lego when I heard my Dad shouting ‘Stormzie, no... come back!’ I rushed into the kitchen and saw my yellow and blue budgie soaring into the trees. My heart sank, she’s gone. We searched the neighbouring gardens but couldn't find her.

Everyday my hope of her coming back became less.

Three days after Stormzie's escape, I was struggling through my maths when my Mum said ‘Something amazing has happened, someone has found Stormzie!’

My mouth fell open in shock. ‘No way’ I said. ‘Yes way!’ grinned my Dad. Happiness swelled inside me, ‘Where, is she?’ I stammered.

2: Found One afternoon at the pet shop in Rushmoor. we were getting into the car to go home, when a lady started chatting to my Mum, she said ‘You'll never believe what just happened! The sweetest budgie just landed on my daughter's head while we were in the garden’. We were very excited and told the lady about Stormzie. The photo on the lady's phone did look mightily like Stormzie. We just couldn't believe that a little budgie could fly all the way from Haslemere to Churt!

We gave her Tom’s phone number and went home full of hope!

7. Moses led the Jews to the red sea where they made unleavened bread, which is bread without any ingredients.

The Luff Gravestone When we first came to Haslemere in 1974, we were fascinated to see the epitaph on the Luff Grave. It is in the North East corner of St Bartholomew’s main churchyard - beside the car park.

‘Death little warning to me gave And quickly brought me to my grave I from my friends did quickly part I lost my life by a horse and cart’ At the time of the Millennium we featured the gravestone in the Haslemere Millennium Souvenir Booklet (pictured). By this time the letters were beginning to fade. But over the last 20 years they had worn away to such an extent that the writing was barely visible.

The Luff name is associated with the funeral directors in the Town but we did not have much success finding close relations. The PCC agreed that the stone should be restored on the understanding that the cost would not come out of Parish Funds. So, the Friends agreed to underwrite the cost while the funding was sorted out. Philip Hunt organised the work and the cost, at £600, was not great. As this gravestone is part of the heritage of the Town, it has been paid for (with great pleasure) by Haslemere Festival, Haslemere Hounds and the Haslemere Information Hub in equal amounts.

Churchyards have a huge amount of history associated with them but, sadly, there is not much humour or memorable epitaphs. This is our contribution to maintain this legacy for many years to come.

A Couple of Recommended Books for Summer Whether you are on a beach or in a sunny garden, here are a couple of suggestions to encourage thought about current issues.

WALK HUMBLY

- Encouragement for Living,

Working and Being

Samuel Wells (Canterbury Press 2019: 99 pages) This short book is designed to be pondered and digested one chapter, paragraph or sentence at a time. It begins by exploring the difference between what abides for ever (essence) and what lasts for only a limited period (existence). The miracle of our lives is that essence (i.e. God) brought existence into being, while He had no need to do so.

The first chapter ‘Be Humble’ points out the random nature of our existence, and why we should be grateful. Our dependence on others whom we have never seen and will never meet is illustrated by a reflection on our daily morning routines. The cotton in our bed-sheets, the soap and toothpaste we use, the breakfast cereal we eat, the tea we drink - all reach us as the result of the work of many others, some in conditions that we may not wish to contemplate.

Sam encourages us to wonder, to consider that our lives might have been very different but for circumstances coming together outside our own control.

‘Humility is that hallowed clearing in the forest of existence where wonder, awe and gratitude meet, dance and play’. ‘Love is the beginning, the cause, the formula for what makes essence an issue in existence’. Each chapter ends with personal ‘wonderings’, inviting us as individuals to ponder, dwell and linger. For example from chapter 1: I wonder which is more mysterious: that there is existence or that there is essence 11

I wonder what it feels like that we depend I wonder what it means to you to honour your parents.

In ten pages of Chapter 5 entitled ‘Be a Person of Praise’, Sam provides a persuasive apology for our times, which is fleshed out in the remainder of the book. Our personal, family and national ‘stories can be told in praise of its author and the blessing bestowed on those for whom it has come to pass’.

‘Your existence is a miracle, and your redemption is amazing grace. And never cease from singing’.

Sam Wells is Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, and is married to Bishop Jo Wells.

GOD AND THE PANDEMIC Tom Wright (SPCK 2020: 76 Pages) This little book offers a Christian reflection upon and response to the dangerous, deadly disease and is biblically based.

Christians do well to follow their forbears by not asking, “Why did this happen?” but by asking, “What might we do to alleviate, if not eradicate, such pain, suffering and disease?”

Wright maintains that Christians do well not to seek to assign blame for the virus or to think of it as a sign of Christ’s coming, as a manifestation of God’s wrath, or even as a momentous opportunity to share one’s faith. Having identified less-than-helpful ways to interpret and to respond to COVID-19, Wright encourages believers to turn to Scripture for guidance and sustenance in these topsy-turvy times.

Starting with the Old Testament in Chapter 2, Wright notes that sacred texts including the Psalms and Job, in particular - can help us learn, not only to speak of human sin and divine judgement, but also to lament in a “time of exile,” in a world marked and marred by injustice and sickness.

Turning to Jesus and the Gospels in Chapter 3, Wright observes that the Gospels present Jesus as the culmination and re-expression of the ancient prophetic tradition and message. Jesus “redefines what it means to say that God is in control, that God is taking charge”. He invites us to “read” current world events in the light of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

With respect to the rest of the New Testament writings, Wright highlights as particularly instructive for the present moment the following texts: Acts 11 -how believers in Syrian Antioch responded to a severe famine by providing help for Judean Christians; Acts 17 - Paul’s focus on Jesus when he appeared before the Areopagus; Revelation 1, 5 and 7 - praising Jesus as Lion, Lamb and Lord; and Romans 8 - reminding us we do not groan alone and are called to be God’s coworkers.

Professor Wright concludes by posing and responding to a number of questions and by calling the church to grieve, though not without hope. For those who never have read a Wright book - there now are roughly 80 of them - the time is now. For his many fans, here is one to add to your collection.

“I think the answer to the riddle is ‘Be Natural’.

The key is in three flats so the note on the B line has a ‘natural’ symbol before it.

A Victorian Lady’s Album Looking through the entries in Nellie’s album, it seems to me that this was an album collecting memories before a major move in my great grandmother’s life. Perhaps before she left home to marry Robert Ramsey. The entries that lead me to this conclusion come particularly from Rosie and Faith. These are the two poems included in this edition. There is also a photograph of Rosie, the only photograph in the album, which has amazingly duplicated itself. To reinforce this idea of leaving a memory album it is clear that the entries are from a limited time frame. The other compelling fact is that there are no entries supporting votes for women, which is significant, as I know my great grandmother was a suffragette. I do wonder how her husband felt about that?

Just a Thought… from Evelyn Hughes

STAY HOME!

Surely this slogan will go down in history, like those from World War II. Staying home has brought blessing to some; others have found it hard-going. For churchgoers the LOCKDOWN has meant being LOCKED OUT, denied entry to our spiritual home.

In the coming days I’m sure we shall experience a greater appreciation of our places of worship. A hymn that comes to mind begins: ‘We love the place, O God / wherein thine honour dwells’. The Jews loved their Temple. One Psalmist, unable to get there, expressed his longing for it: ‘My soul hath a desire and longing to enter the courts of the Lord’. Another recalls, in sadness, how he ‘went with the multitude… with the voice of praise and thanksgiving, among those who kept holy day’.

Perhaps, too, we shall discover a renewed sense of commitment. The good Jew - including Jesus - attended Festivals at the Temple. Like all good Jews, Jesus attended the synagogue on the sabbath day ‘as was his custom’, St Luke tells us.

St. Paul, on a homeward voyage, by-passed Ephesus, ‘as he was eager to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost’. Religious observance, in company with others, was part and parcel of the rhythm of life.

At another time, and in another place, we were discussing Paul’s concept of the church as the body of Christ. We agreed: the church is not a building, it’s the people (a point which has been well demonstrated during the pandemic). I wish we could find another word for the church building, to make the distinction clearer. I favour ‘The House of Prayer’ - but that’s rather a mouthful!

The question is sometimes put: ‘Are church buildings really necessary, not least in view of the cost of maintaining them?’ Surely they are vital - as places set apart for private prayer and communal worship; mutual encouragement and combined witness; places where, whoever seeks one, may find a home.

French Toast Contributed by Linda Donaldson

When we were travelling in New Zealand this became one of our favourite lunch-time snacks and I have taken this recipe from a little book called ‘Posh Sandwiches’!

Serves 2 Takes 20 minutes

4 rashers of streaky bacon 4 slices crusty white bread 2 tbsp. peanut butter 1 ripe banana, peeled and sliced 4 medium eggs 100ml. milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. maple syrup 25g. butter Drizzle of olive oil

For the blueberry sauce 100g. blueberries 2 tbsp. maple syrup

Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the bacon for about 5 minutes, until golden and crisp. Transfer to a tray and keep warm.

Spread 2 slices of bread with the peanut butter. Lay the banana slices on top and sandwich each with the remaining bread. Crack the eggs into a large, shallow baking dish. Add the milk, vanilla and maple syrup and whisk until combined. Soak the sandwiches in the beaten egg for 5 minutes, turning them over a few times.

Meanwhile make the blueberry sauce. Heat the blueberries and maple syrup in a small saucepan for 3-5 minutes, until the blueberries start to pop. Allow to bubble for 1 minute to reduce the sauce. Set aside.

Heat half the butter and oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Once bubbling, lift the sandwiches out of the egg mixture. Fry the sandwiches for 23 minutes, then turn over. Drop in the remaining butter and fry until golden, basting with the butter as you go.

Cut the sandwiches in half and serve topped with crispy bacon and the blueberry sauce.

Renovating the Parquet Floor at St Christopher’s In early July an enthusiastic group of volunteers took advantage of the Church being closed and decided to renovate the parquet floor in St Christopher’s which had become badly scratched and in need of some love.

Whilst socially distancing from each other, the floor was washed, buffed, washed again and then finally oiled. During August after the oil has ‘cured’ the floor will be waxed and polished. It is already looking so much better and a richer colour. Hopefully we will continue to regularly wax the floor every few months and we are so very thankful to have been given an electric floor polisher from a kind donor.

The Garden House, 49 Guillards Oak, Midhurst GU29 9JZ Refreshments and a Plant Stall will be available Pre-booking at https://ngs.org.uk/view-garden/35026/ This ¼ acre garden was changed in 2012 from an expanse of lawn under trees to a parterre with clematis, roses and trained fruit on arches to become the view from the S-facing house. Busy greenhouse, grand design style fruit cage, Wendy house and bug palace, connected by a small woodland walk under a huge Swamp Cypress, Banksia rose and trachelospermum climbing up the house.

In My Garden Philip Duly My love of gardening can be traced back to being given a pack of two darkleaved dahlia tubers with pink flowers - perhaps Bishop of Leicester - which successfully produced two giant plants with profuse blooms. Aged eight or nine, I was instantly hooked, believing that gardening was an effortless activity that produced instant gratification. That inherent belief hasn't changed very much, forty years on.

At 15 I acquired my first allotment which became an an innocent and handy excuse for neglecting schoolwork and a less troublesome teenage activity than playing pop music at full volume. At 18 I was given a tiny buddleia plant by a near-neighbour (perhaps in the vain hope that I might turn down the volume on my stereo). The plant, commonly known as the butterfly bush, eventually grew to over 12 feet tall and was responsible for my lifelong love of these reliable, drought-tolerant, deciduous shrubs.

Buddleia Davidii Black Knight This month's star plant is the Buddleia Davidii Black Knight which is a little less common than the Summer Lilac, Empire Blue and White Profusion varieties. Black Knight's flower spikes are an incredible deep purple and can last for several weeks before turning brown, at which point they can be removed to encourage more blooms which may flower into the early Autumn. Buddleias can be shaped, pruned and trimmed to fit the size of a particular bed or border and can be trained to successfully grow through other plants such as rhododendrons, lilacs and forsythia to save space and use the same small area on a two for one basis.

Editor’s note: When asked for the context of his poem, Philip replied: ‘It was written at the conclusion of a joyous holiday at a favourite location on Exmoor. It was early Autumn, the nights were drawing in, the weather rapidly deteriorating and the following summer's break seeming a lifetime away. Writing it . made me very contented ’ 21

On June 18th a group of about 10 of us went and sang Happy Birthday to Mary Kirkman on the occasion of her 99th Birthday. We also gave her a huge bunch of flowers as you can see in the picture. She looked thrilled and even sang us a thank you song!

Phyllis Tuckwell Re-opens Shops After Lockdown After closing all of its shops in March in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell is delighted to announce that it has now re-opened the majority of its shops across its catchment area of West Surrey and North-East Hampshire.

During lockdown, the charity spent a great deal of time preparing for this re-opening, installing screens at tills, planning one-way systems around the shop floors and putting up signs to remind customers to Hand sanitiser, a one- use the hand sanitiser provided and maintain social way system and PPE for distancing. staff are just some of ‘It has been wonderful to see customers back in our the ways Phyllis Tuckwell has prepared shops, and lovely to see our regulars again’, said for re-opening its shop. Barry Young, Retail Operations Manager at Phyllis Tuckwell. ‘We are so grateful to our shoppers for their patience and understanding during this difficult time and would like to thank them all for the respect they have shown for the safety measures we have introduced.’

With many people using spare time during lockdown to have a clear-out of their cupboards, Phyllis Tuckwell has received many donations since reopening, and its shops are full of quality second-hand items ready for customers to browse through. From clothes, shoes and accessories, to books, DVDs and games, there’s something for everyone. These donations really are invaluable to the charity, as it seeks to make up income lost during lockdown.

The money which these shops raise goes towards helping fund the supportive and end of life care which the charity offers to local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer.
