Dear Friends I have self-diagnosed myself with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Have we not just emerged from the most miserable winter on record? Some of you will remember the winter of 1963 (only six years before I was born), and some of you may even remember the winter of 1948. But for me 2020-21 was a thoroughly rotten winter! Of course, as we know it’s been about so much more than just the weather. You all know the sort of things we have been struggling with together this last winter here in Haslemere and across the whole nation.

Like a broken record I crackle on constantly about hope being the strongest of human emotions. I have always found it to be so. Easter in the northern hemisphere gets us the hope of Spring, and here is why I’m a bluetit. All through the cold months I’ve kept a well-stocked garden bird feeder on the go. It’s halfway down the garden, but with my binoculars I can watch the local avian population closely. All sorts of feathered types congregate to worship my hanging seed cages and fat balls (a list below for those interested), but it’s the blue tits who rule.

At any one time there is a couple of squadrons of blue tits diving on and off the feeder, twittering and dancing, and chasing each other around. They are so grateful for what I put out, but I couldn’t help worrying about them in the frost and snow outside all day and night. But they seem to have been constantly happy. Nothing upsets them no matter how cold and miserable it is. I have much to learn it seems. Now a couple of them have taken up residence in my birdbox, which has a camera to view them build the nest. What a joy.

This Easter and Springtime hold the promise of finer weather alongside a plan for the national recovery we all hold dear. We can also look forward to seeing our families and friends again. Two of our own three children Sophie and I have 3

not seen since October. There are many social plans around the town and people are now making their best efforts to put on sunny displays and events. Here in the church we, too, are planning to return and bring back the normality we can only remember from more than a year ago. Slowly it happens, and with the gradual return of simple things such as refreshments after services, social groups and even singing. It’s all directed by the government’s plan, but I am hopeful. I will keep you all informed as these things become possible.

In some way and at some point we shall need to look back in remembrance for those we have lost, and to give thanks for those who have worked so hard to keep us fed and cared for over this unprecedented time of living memory. I’m also still committed to a parish party in my garden in August.

Of course I don’t have Seasonal Affective Disorder. There are those much worse off than me and in much greater need of hope! But I think I do understand how we all feel. I’m just off now for an ice cream.

P.S. In January I monitored the bird life in my garden and made a report to the RSPB for their Garden Bird Watch. Here is what I saw: Magpie, Crow, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Starling, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Siskin, Sparrow, Dunnock, Robin, Wren, Goldcrest, Great Crested Woodpecker - and I heard a Tawny Owl. I was expecting to see, but didn’t: Nuthatch, Brambling, Green Woodpecker, Fieldfare, Redwing and Sparrowhawk. Did anyone else see these?

Sophie’s Birthday The sun was doing its best to shine on the morning of 22nd February, and a small group of us met outside the Rectory (indeed blocking the road of Pine View Close) to celebrate a special birthday for a very special lady. It was Sophie’s 50th !

Clive Hawkins had prior warning and managed to gather a small group together to offer her love and best wishes on behalf of the whole Parish. We gathered at 10.30, just as Chris and Sophie finished a call with family, and we were able to deliver flowers and gifts and then sing a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday (all socially-distanced, of course!). Peter Boxall made a splendid cake, that was later cut and shared by people who picked up a slice from the doorstep.

Sophie was completely taken by surprise (well done Chris!) and has asked to give everyone her thanks for making the day special and making her feel very wanted and loved. There will be an occasion in the not too distant future when we can all gather and raise a glass to Sophie, but we did manage to mark the day as best we could in lockdown.

St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary School A Pupil’s View...

The lockdowns have been extremely difficult. Everything has been affected in some way or another - whether it’s from tiny little things such as fancying a swim or obvious tasks like going to the supermarket. One of the biggest problems has been the children's education, which has caused loss of so many different activities that are essential to a child’s learning development.

In the first lockdown, St Bartholomew's students were ecstatic, as were children across the country. School closed? Stay at home? Almost every child’s dream!

Then we found out what it was like. Confusing emails, messy printouts, boring documents filled with cramped words and many more horrors filled our homes!

After summer, September brought a welcome change for students and parents around the UK. Christmas - although still unusual - was a joyous time that helped us all. Though 2021 brought a third lockdown, St Barts was prepared for it - we created an extremely useful network on Teams, with accessible homework and a straightforward way of communicating and questioning, as well as fantastic live calls in which we could discuss with our teacher and each other. I think that the third lockdown has been the most enjoyable lockdown in terms of home learning (though of course, it can’t compare with the joy of being back at fantastic St Bart’s!).

Throughout all lockdowns, St Bart’s students have continued to watch assemblies and take hope from Jesus and God. We have watched videos from the Wey Assemblies Team and from Mr Beckerson. During this challenging period, we have continued to learn and develop Believe, Achieve, Respect, Trust and Succeed – our school values.

In January and February, we have had Mardi Gras (a French celebration), Art Day, Music Day, and World Book Day. We have achieved these occasions online, with fun live lessons and activities to do. I particularly enjoyed World Book Day, where we each received a free book upon our return to school!

I would like to thank the teachers, LSAs, Mr Beckerson, Mr Avenell and all the other staff at this school so much. They have done a fantastic job during the lockdowns, and are continuing to work their socks off now we are back at school! Meanwhile, the other key workers around England and the NHS are continuing to fight this pandemic, and have been our superheroes in the last 12 months. Thank you.

‘Covid Hero’s Award for Haslemere Rotary’ ‘Jeremy Hunt MP, in conjunction with the Herald, launched the search for Community Covid Heroes by shining a spotlight on those going above and beyond during the pandemic, whether it be supporting their neighbours, fundraising or helping the community.

Retired Haslemere Town Clerk and currently Haslemere Rotary Club President Mike O’Neil received the award on behalf of his club’ (Mike explains): This award was in recognition of the following three great local Covid community initiatives which Haslemere Rotary Club Members planned and delivered: 1. Supplying PPE - often freely - through the pop-up shop, previously in West Street, Haslemere.

2. Giving 120 presents to 7 infant and junior schools whose pupils are impacted during these troubled times.

3. Currently supplying renovated, unwanted laptops and chrome books to Woolmer Hill and Bohunt secondary schools, where home learning equipment is not readily available, to some 78 students.

There is still a need for any old unwanted laptops which you can deliver to Haslewey Community Centre for our partner computer company, Disking, to renovate for school use.

Take a look at Haslemere Rotary Facebook and web pages, where you’ll find further details of our activities. You might like to give something back to your community by helping us, as there is much fun to be had and there are some more great local projects that we need your help to deliver.

Other achievements over six months:

1. Raising over £11,000 to help local charities - examples are Haslemere Stroke Club and Haslemere Food Bank.

2. Opening our first Rotary pop-up shop in West Street where, amongst many other activities, recycled pallet wood garden furniture and children's mud kitchens were built and sold.

3. Receiving significant grants for our activities.

4. Christmas collections via our Santa Sleigh in Charter Walk and through residential areas, spreading joy to brighten up life during the festive period.

5. Christmas wreaths for children to make from art kits - a new initiative that will follow on into next year.

6. Old coffee hessian sacks to be recycled for a giant summer sack race. This is being planned, along with other creative uses, for the hessian sacks.

7. Devising a Covid ‘questions answered’ leaflet to test our knowledge on the rules that we have to adhere to.

Marie O’Neil (11.1.30 - 1.2.21) Our good friend Marie died in Oak Hall early on February 1st. She had been a long-term member of St. Christopher’s Church and had lived for many years in a flat overlooking the church garden. This is a short tribute from her son Mike.

Frankie Gaiter It’s been a time of tears and laughter for me, her son.

Laughter came first with that dreaded call to the undertaker as soon as he opened. I started by saying that my mother, Marie O’Neill, had passed away and that I believe that she had come to him some years ago asking him to make the arrangements for her funeral. His response was that yes, he remembered her.

‘But that’s impossible’ I said, ‘with all the people you must see’. ‘No.’ he replied, ‘It was about five years ago. She came in with her granddaughter, Marie saying that she didn’t want a great posh car.

Surprised, her granddaughter asked how she was to get to the church. To which Marie replied, ‘I live next door so I will walk!!’

My thoughts are depicted in this verse: Those we love don’t go away They walk beside us every day.

Thank you, St. Christopher’s, for the love you gave to my Mum.

An Injection of National Pride I recently had the pleasure of receiving my first COVID vaccination at St Christopher's Church and I am pleased to report that the experience has had a very positive impact on me. The building felt a very pleasant and safe place to be in, the processing was nicely done and the lady who administered the injection could not have been more caring. However, I was most struck by the army of people in yellow vests. They, to me, most obviously represented the volunteer nature of the vaccination programme, and I was struck by just how many there were; from the car park to the zebra crossing and the doors - all with friendly faces and ready to help and advise.

I talked to a few on the way out (from a safe distance, of course) and it dawned on me that the success of the vaccine roll-out was due in great part to our cultural strength of volunteering - hats off to you volunteers!

I do not tend to recognise the strengths of British culture, but this is definitely one of our very best national characteristics - so much of the good that occurs in our society is done by tireless volunteers who find great satisfaction and purpose in making their contribution; from sports clubs, to charity shops and food banks to name but a few, and of course, in the life of a church.

I felt proud to be British for the first time in quite a while, and more than a little concerned as to how such programmes, which are desperately needed world-wide, can happen without the generous heart for 10

volunteering that we are so fortunate to have woven into the fabric of our society. Maybe the legacy that we are leaving to future generations in this country still has some wonderful cultural gems nestled within it.

A Few Words of Background The Rector was very pleased to have been asked if St Christopher's Church could be used as a vaccination centre. He quickly set up a team to work through the logistics and legal aspects of using Church buildings for, what seemed at the time, an entirely over-optimistic ambition to vaccinate the over 80s in short order. As I write this, the over 55s are being invited through the national system, and the over 50s are poised to log on and get an appointment. The centre at St Christopher’s is being run by a consortium of local GPs and is not releasing slots as yet onto the national booking system.

There was a pause in January and February but they are back up and running now. They are currently concentrating on our older residents and the clinically vulnerable and we are delighted that so many people are coming into our Church who might otherwise have driven past without giving it a second thought. Just today during a visit, a steady stream of people arrived and left with barely a free chair (and as soon as one was free it was being wiped down). The atmosphere was calm yet purposeful and it was a privilege to be able to see it. Everyone involved has appreciated our prayers and practical support and we all look forward to life returning to something closer to normal as a result of this programme.

A Picture for Eastertide Caravaggio’s ‘The Incredulity of St Thomas’ (1602)

During ‘lockdown’ and ‘social distancing’ recently, we have become accustomed to totally avoiding physical contact or proximity at all times. Certain politicians have previously put themselves in difficulty by inappropriate management of such matters, but I hope that we can relax more (as a church family) by the autumn. Christ showed differing attitudes to being touched.

On Easter morning, the risen Christ was first recognised by Mary Magdalene.

He told her “Do not hold onto me, because I have not ascended to the Father” (John 20:17). However, a week afterwards (in verse 27), he invites the disciple Thomas to “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt, but believe”.

Many of Caravaggio’s paintings show the contrast of light to dark (from left to right) to add dramatic effect. ‘The Incredulity’ effectively captures the two states of death and life in the same painting. He replaces the archetypal icon of Christ ascending from the tomb with arms spread triumphantly. The moment in which Thomas touches the wound (of course) goes beyond the strict letter of John’s Gospel, but it conveys a key moment perpetuated by this painting itself.

The artist establishes a new, corporeal vision of resurrection ­ the spirit once again made flesh and blood. The parting message is one of faith, as the artist captures the epiphany moment: “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (verse 29).

In our Lent course this year (Living His Story) we looked at how Jesus communicated, beginning most conversations from a place of love. Matthew 9:36 tells us that “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless”. But Jesus was a mixture of ‘social animal’, inviting himself to dine at the homes of strangers, and introvert, seeking solitude to pray intimately to his father. Our parish has always loved to offer a wide range of social events to invite those both on the fringe of church life, and at the ‘core’. My hope is that ‘normal service’ can be resumed in the autumn to aid our efforts in mission and evangelism.

HASLEMERE The Haslemere Festival - a Walk Some weeks ago I was asked by Hamish Donaldson if I would like to lead another Town Walk as part of the biennial Haslemere Festival. As these have been well attended in past years I was delighted to agree.

The walk of about an hour and a quarter will be on Sunday 23rd May starting at 11.00am from the steps at the front of Haslemere Hall. Really, it’s more of a gentle stroll round the old town centre giving some background to some of the remarkable people who have made the town the attractive and historic place which continues to make it popular.

Many of the names may well sound familiar - but the answers to the questions that are posed below may be more obscure. If you would like to know more about the people and places and their part in the town you know, then why not come for a stroll and possibly learn more?

Jonathan Hutchinson, originally from Selby in Yorkshire, a well educated and eminent surgeon and his son Herbert, made a huge difference to the town and its culture. Aficionados of the museum will know more of that. Herbert became an architect and his distinctive designs are easily identified in many of the houses in the southern part of the town. It was his father who paid for the water tower (since demolished) to be constructed and fed from springs in the town which enabled many to have a potable water supply in the town. The Half Moon Estate was created on the old Bowlands Farm originally bought

by Sir Jonathan.

Barclay Lewis Day similarly provided us all with a lasting place of entertainment and his daughter Edith was, arguably perhaps, equally notable - how did that come about? The name of John Wornham Penfold is well known locally - an architect, surveyor and astute 14

observer of life and times in the town. Among much else besides, he designed the Working Men’s Club in the High Street and supervised the restoration of the almshouses in Petworth Road, all paid for by his friend James Stewart Hodgson.

Another great philanthropist Sir Richard Garton, a chemist by profession, was influenced by Algernon Methuen, by the Rev Aitken, and another well known name, William Beveridge - the man later dubbed ‘the father of the welfare state’, who also lived here. How many know of the connection? The name Garton may not be instantly recognised but it certainly ought to be because his interests, knowledge and philanthropy continue to affect us all in such a variety of ways.

Robert Hunter is of course widely recognised as one of the three prime movers along with Canon Rawnsley and Octavia Hill, joint founders of the National Trust in 1895, but the origins of the Trust were rooted in the Commons and Footpaths Preservation Society which was established ten years before.

The Blue Plaques scheme that the Haslemere Society has embraced enthusiastically has made a significant impact in commemorating many of the people mentioned above and places associated with them.

I hope that this short piece of scene-setting may encourage you to join us for our walk round the town. I shall be very pleased to see you.

COVID CONTINGENCY At the time of going to press, there is still some uncertainty about the restrictions that may be in place during the Festival. It is very unfortunate that some of the concerts have had to be cancelled, largely because Covid restrictions have not allowed sufficient rehearsal time. We are planning to run all the remaining events in the programme in person, on-line or by Zoom. We are sure you will welcome our efforts to re-start entertainment following the lockdown.

Hamish Donaldson, Chairman Thursday May, 20th at 7pm: The Haslemere String Competition Finalists side by side. Due to Covid, the competition for 2021 has been moved to 2023. So, this is a side-by-side chamber music concert, with the very talented finalists from the competition in 2019 performing with professional musicians. The programme contains Mozart Violin and Viola Duo and Schubert Trout Quintet.

Friday 21st May A Journey Through Jazz Piano Gareth Williams is one of the UK’s top jazz pianists with huge and varied experience. He won the British Jazz Awards (piano) in 2013 and is a professor of jazz piano at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. St Bartholomew’s Church, £12.50 (£10 on-line) Saturday 22nd May, 7.30pm: HHH Concerts in association with Haslemere Festival present Mark Padmore CBE, tenor, with Ana Manastireanu, pianist Mark Padmore has established an international career in opera, concert and recital. His appearances in Bach Passions have gained particular notice, especially his renowned performances as Evangelist in the St Matthew and St John Passions with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle. His programme features Schubert Songs in Part I with a selection of songs from British composers (including Britten, Vaughan Williams, Holst and Tippett) in Part II. St Bartholomew’s Church, £18.00 (£10.00 on-line) Sunday 23rd May, 11am: Historic Haslemere Town Walk led by Robert Serman This 90-minute gentle stroll around the town centre focuses mostly, but not entirely, on the significant and mainly philanthropic individuals whose generosity played a key part in making Haslemere the desirable place it is. Meet at the front steps of Haslemere Hall £5 Sunday 23rd May, 3pm: Bell Ringing - Come and Have a Go! Cost £2, £1 for children (pay on the day) to cover the costs of the cake. The bell-ringing, as always, is free. St Bartholomew’s Church.

Sunday 23rd May, 6pm: Festival Evensong Civic Service Rev Chris Bessant, Rector, will lead the Festival Choral Evensong at St. Bartholomew’s. The anthem is composed for the occasion by Clive Osgood, Director of Music. Free entry with retiring collection.

Tuesday 25th May, 11am: HMT Pine and Royal Navy Patrol Service Revd Chris Bessant - The Rector of Haslemere - was in a previous existence a keen wreck scuba diver, with a passion for marine archaeology. In 2013 he worked with a team to investigate and recover some of the history of HMT Pine, an armed trawler sunk off the south coast. Haslemere Museum, £5 Wednesday 26th May, 2.30pm: Military History - the WWII Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway Hamish Donaldson, at the time a boy in Australia, 17

explains the first two aircraft carrier battles (The Coral Sea and Midway) which marked the first turning points in WWII and the long road to Japan’s eventual defeat. Haslemere Museum, £5 Thursday 27th May, 7.30pm: A romantic trip from Vivaldi to Wagner Janice Watson accompanied by Clive Osgood Janice Watson is one of the worlds most celebrated sopranos, renowned for the beauty of her sound. Her programme contains some of her absolute favourites, with a selection of Baroque songs through the late classical era to the wonderful romanticism of Wagner and his love for Matilda Wesendonck. It concludes with a flourish of Extravagant Opera. St Bartholomew’s Church. £15 (£10 on-line) Friday 28th May, 11am: Gerard Manley Hopkins and his family in Haslemere Gerard Manley Hopkins [1844-89] was an unknown poet and Jesuit priest when he visited his family’s new home in Haslemere in August 1887. Two years later he was dead and his Memorial window was placed in St Bartholomew’s Church - nearly thirty years before publication of his collected poems. Katherine Jessel’s detailed research puts Gerard’s visit into context and reveals the remarkable Hopkins family’s sixty-six years in Haslemere. St Bartholomew’s Church, £5 Bank Holiday Monday 31st May, 7.30pm: Memories of Flanders and Swann A Gnother Musical Farrago with Michael Mates and William Godfree. Mates, in Donald Swann’s own words, ‘The nearest thing to Flanders since Flanders’ and Godfree, ‘Utterly professional’, will give us all the old favourites, plus some intriguing rarities from the F & S canon. Just a Thought…

Evelyn Hughes Staying with friends in New Zealand, I was taken on a tour of the South Island. At one point, we had to pass through the Homer Tunnel - which had been blown through solid rock. There was no stop/go system at either end, and little room for passing. The only light was from our headlamps on the tunnel’s red reflectors.

For a claustrophobe like me, it was an endurance test.

What a relief, when a speck of light appeared at the end and gradually became full daylight.

The seemingly endless Covid ‘tunnel’ has been long and dark. Thanks to the vaccine, there’s light at the end of it. We grieve for those for whom it came too late, and for those who mourn them. The daily death count has confronted us with the fact of our own mortality. The poet John Betjeman - though a Christian - could ask: “Is it extinction when I die?” Writing on the subject of Eternal Life, the late Archbishop William Temple said: “There is nothing of which I feel so certain...I do not want it for myself as mere continuance, but I want it for my understanding of life. And, moreover, ‘God is love’ appears to me nonsense in view of the world he has made, if there is no other.”

Paul strove to convince doubting Corinthians that if Christ was raised from the dead, so would they be, for: “If it is for this life only that Christ has given us hope, we, of all people, are most to be pitied.”

My father died when I was eleven. A few years later, in church on Easter Day, I had my first intimation of immortality. What if my father was still alive! The hymn that had prompted the thought has remained a favourite: Jesus lives! Our hearts know well Nought from us his love shall sever; Life nor death nor powers of hell Tear us from his keeping ever.

Working Party at St Bart’s before Palm Sunday Opening

Organised by Roscelin Rees, volunteers descended on St Barts to clean and polish brass in preparation for the grand opening on Palm Sunday, when church members would once again be allowed to worship in Church. Salmon Fillets With Cauliflower Cheese Topping Contributed by Linda Donaldson Serves 6 Ingredients: 250g.(9oz.) cauliflower 100g. (4oz.) full-fat cream cheese 25g. (1oz.) mature Cheddar cheese, grated 50g. (2oz.) Parmesan cheese, grated 2 tsp. Dijon mustard 6 x 125g. salmon fillets, skinned Juice of ½ large lemon Paprika for dusting Salt and pepper Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.

Break the cauliflower into florets, then whizz them in a processor until they look like couscous. Tip into a bowl and stir in the cream cheese, Cheddar, half the Parmesan, the mustard and lots of salt and pepper. Mix well until combined.

Sit the salmon fillets on the baking sheet. Season them on both sides and squeeze over the lemon juice. Divide the topping into six portions and spoon over the top of each fillet, using a teaspoon to spread it out to the edges. Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan and dust with paprika.

Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and the cauliflower topping is lightly golden. Serve hot with green vegetables.

Eat and enjoy!

Lockdown Blessings

changing seasons and the huge variety of plants growing in the woods. Usually we have been lucky enough to meet friends and exchange a socially-distanced word or two. No one is in hurry and complete strangers smile and pass the time of day. We all look forward to getting back to ‘normal’ but wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone is still able to find the time to enjoy being outside in this way?

Last year blessed us with the opportunity to find time to learn to grow our own vegetables. Our harvest of lettuces, potatoes, sprouts and beans was exciting and plentiful.

The beetroot, spring onion and romanesco were delicious.

Sadly the tomatoes got blight and we planted baby corn too late in the season.

Our biggest challenge has been learning how to manage the plants’ growth to encourage the fruits to mature. We certainly can grow leaves and these have at times overgrown the neighbouring fruits.

Our courgettes were a lost cause.

Easter Morning, The Other Mary As the traditional Easter story is rehearsed again this month, you may notice that there is one name that frequently occurs. It is that of the ‘other’ Mary - not the mother of Jesus, but Mary of Magdalene, who stood by her at the cross and became the first person actually to meet the risen Christ.

That’s quite a record for a woman who, the Gospels tell us, had been delivered

by Jesus from ‘seven devils’ - New Testament language for some dark and horrible affliction of body, mind or spirit. As a result, her devotion to Him was total and her grief at His death overwhelming.

In church history Mary Magdalene became the ‘fallen woman’ a harlot who was rescued and forgiven by Jesus. There is no evidence to prove she was a ‘fallen woman’ but the contrast is sublime, Mary the virgin mother, the symbol of purity. Mary Magdalene, the scarlet woman who was saved and forgiven, the symbol of redemption. Surely, we all fall somewhere between those two extremes.

The dark cloud from which she was delivered may have been sexual, we are not told. What we do know is that the two Marys stood together at the cross, the Blessed Virgin and the woman rescued from who knows what darkness and despair.

The second great moment for her was as unexpected as it was momentous.

She had gone with other women to the tomb of Jesus and found it empty. An angelic figure told them that Jesus was not there, He had risen - and the others drifted off. But Mary stayed, reluctant to leave it like that. She became aware of a man nearby, whom she took to be the gardener. She explained to him that the body of ‘her Lord’ had been taken away and she didn’t know where to find Him. The man simply said her name ‘Mary’ and she instantly realised it was Jesus. She made to hug Him, but He told her not to touch Him because His resurrection was not yet complete. She was, however, to go to the disciples and tell them she had met Him. She did - but they wouldn’t believe her.

Her words - ‘I have seen the Lord’ - echo down the centuries, the very beating heart of the Christian gospel.

Churchyard Jottings

Philip Hunt As we move from winter into spring, the grass in our churchyards requires more frequent attention. Parishioners will know that the cutting of the grass in all three churchyards is the responsibility of Waverley Borough Council’s contractor. In normal times, I have met with WBC officers a couple of times a year to review the contractor’s performance and discuss any variations to the work plan. Personnel have changed and it is unclear whether this facility will be available in the future. But, it is still my intention to continue these sessions and I hope to arrange one before the summer.

Unfortunately, the weeds and nettles know when spring has arrived too!

However, with Covid lock down restrictions gradually easing, it is hoped that we will be able to resume our churchyard working parties at St Bartholomew’s before too long. If sufficient manpower is available, there are areas in Derby Road churchyard which would also benefit from a little loving care. The date of the next working party will be posted on the weekly news sheet so as to provide reasonable notice. It will be in the customary format on a Saturday morning from 9.30 till 12.00. Even with social distancing it should be possible to work effectively.

Meanwhile, there are some really exciting plans involving the pupils of St Bartholomew’s Primary School. This will mean using Derby Road churchyard for part of their Holy Week preparations. Pupils will be exploring the Easter message through a series of outdoor spaces. The arbour along the main pathway will become the road to the Cross and each class will be able to hang a red ribbon in their journey to Good Friday. This should be quite a spectacle and it is hoped that it will have the same uplifting effect as the poppies on St Christopher’s tower.

Down Memory Lane...

In My Garden Philip Duly Robert Browning's poem Home Thoughts, from Abroad was written in 1845 when the poet was longing to return from Northern Italy to his native England.

Considered one of the nation's favourite poems, it opens with the immortal lines Oh, to be in England, Now that April’s there. For the gardener, April is exciting and rewarding in equal measure as our Springtime gardens finally shake off the last remnants of Winter.

We are rightly proud of our bulbs and in my garden the tulips will, as ever, be taking centre stage this Spring. But we should not forget, nor neglect, our wonderful shrubs - Camellias, Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Ceanothus will each be making their magnificent contribution to our colourful Springtime gardens.

This month's star plant is another colourful and very hardy and reliable shrub, not for its flowers, but for its brightly-coloured and ever-changing foliage which emerges each Spring with a burnished bronze-red flush, then, as the leaves mature, turning bright yellow and, later, a luminous green.

Spiraea japonica Goldflame known also as the Japanese Spiraea - develops clusters of dark pink flowers which appear seemingly backlit by the glowing foliage in mid- and late summer.

It is compact and easy to grow and makes an excellent informal, low hedge or groundcover plant for a sunny well-drained border.

Some Spiraea contain salicylates. The word ‘aspirin’ was coined by adding an ‘a’ (for aceylation) to ‘spirin’, from the German Spirsäure, a reference to Spiraea. Spiraea betulifolia is still used for abdominal pain and can be made into a tea.

A: (Philip Duly) Owners of Daphnes are likely to be a bit twitchy in January and February as they stay stubbornly poised to bloom, just waiting for the weather to break a little. When the buds do burst you smell the flowers before you notice them, for Daphnes are one of the most fragrant plants in the winter garden, the fragrance becoming more intense as they open. Sometimes Daphnes bloom as early as December, but it all depends if the weather is mild. The buds stay tantalisingly shut just waiting for the right moment to open and bloom, and when they do they really do symbolise that the days are getting longer and warmer and that springtime is getting closer. So there you are - it should come into bloom as the weather improves and the reason it hasn't yet is purely down to the cold.

Ranger Housing Needed!

Swan Barn Farm’s fields were available to us all during lockdowns: green spaces where people could walk alone, well-maintained trails kept safe and clear with perpetual forestry work, open fields for picnics with home-schooled children, space for dogs to walk or play, and farm animals grazing peacefully. How lucky are we? But after all, the National Trust was founded right here, in a dedicated effort to preserve natural beauty, and grew into a nationwide charity.

On a walk the other day, I heard that Swan Barn Farm, like all Trust properties, is suffering cutbacks due to lockdown loss of income. Most urgently, our own rangers, who have quietly maintained farm, animals and woodlands, are losing their housing. Without homes nearby, they will be unable to provide the maintenance that we have all taken for granted.

DO YOU HAVE ANY HOUSING AVAILABLE? If you have property such as a home that needs caretaking while you are abroad; a cottage or converted barn, please consider letting it to our own Swan Barn ranger families! Can anyone help with tax advice? If they pay low rents, is the difference in market value a charitable donation for the landlord, helping support National Trust employees?

These are experienced rural property professionals who often have a small, well -trained dog accompanying them to work daily.
