if louis vuitton understands one thing, it's imagination. So it’s fitting that from April 2 to

August 31, the Fondation Louis Vuitton presents the most substantial exhibition of photographer Cindy Sherman to be presented in Europe in the last 10 years. Sherman is known for her unorthodox take on perception and her fabrication of imaginary characters through self-portraits.

The retrospective will cover her entire career since 1975, as well as some previously unseen works.

SEEING GLITCHES

for spring /summer

2020, Dunhill merges with Tokyo-based digital artist Kenta Cobayashi and his creative use of distortion by digital image manipulation, drawing inspiration from the changing landscape of Tokyo and its arts scene. Mark Weston, the creative director of Dunhill, hand-picked four images from the brand’s archives for Cobayashi to rework; these graphical and abstract images are then applied as prints to select outerwear, tailoring, casualwear and leather goods.

A CLICK IN TIME

for classicism, the works of the late fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh continue to inspire awe. Until August 2, Armani/Silos has dedicated a new exhibition devoted to his work, titled Heimat: A Sense of Belonging. The exhibition pays homage to the powerful affinities between Giorgio Armani and Lindbergh, two visionaries and close collaborators whose unique sense of identity and aesthetics helped create a new vision of the world.

Birds of a feather flock together, so models of a runway… strut together? An icon born in 1997, the Fendi Baguette has proven that it’s much more than just a bag – and it’s endured the test of time.

The Canadian fashion model and prominent public ambassador of the skin condition vitiligo, Winnie Harlow, who you probably know as a contestant on the 21st cycle of America’s Next Top Model, is the newest face to be seen sporting the newest version of the popular handbag. Arm in arm with her real-life BFF, fellow model Shannon Hamilton, the duo star in the most recent episode of Fendi’s #BaguetteFriendsForever adventures. and Hong Kong It-girl Fiona McLeish’s face can be seen in massive campaigns on some of the city’s most prominent billboards. When she’s not socialising with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Takashi Murakami or Jason Mraz, she’s often with her fiancé, streetwear maven Kevin Poon. But she came from simple beginnings, growing up in Hong Kong as the youngest and only girl of three children, with a Scottish father and Chinese mother.

It was the classic tale of the younger sister – she always wanted to fit in with her two older brothers, but they never wanted to play with her. “My mother would always dress me in head-to-toe pink because she thought I was too much of a tomboy and wanted me to be more girly,” she recalls. “I remember this outfit so significantly. It was a head-to-toe pink Juicy Couture look with a pink beanie. It was super-trendy at that time.”

A few years after getting her marketing degree in the UK, McLeish came back home and worked at an office job for a while, but she never really felt it was quite right for her.

like myself, so I never really had a problem with my identity – and also my brothers are Eurasians.

It was never a weird thing for me.

Which do you identify more with, your Chinese or Scottish side?

I think the Chinese side. I love eating Chinese food. I’m not really into Western foods such as burgers or steaks.

People know you as a model in Hong Kong.

What’s your favourite part about modelling?

Growing up, I never thought I looked pretty or that I wanted to be a model. That wasn’t my intention at all. I did it because I wanted to learn more about communicating with others.

Through modelling, I met so many different types of people. I was a lot shyer growing up, and modelling helped me to evolve and be more comfortable in front of people. That’s a really positive thing about my work – and I like how flexible it is. Having done an office job, I don’t think I can ever go back to that. If I really had to, then I could. As a model, I like the flexibility and I like how I can travel. Besides, every job is different – and having to tackle each one is fun for me.

Did you ever struggle with your mixed race when you were growing up, or was it something you never gave much thought to?

I think it was easy for me growing up in Hong Kong because everyone’s so internationally minded here. There are so many other Eurasians

What are some of the things you don’t like about this career?

I’m thankful to have a great agency and I feel like they’ve been quite protective of me. The only thing is that I don’t like to be taken advantage of.

Otherwise, everyone’s been so nice.

What was it like growing up in Hong Kong as a mixed-race kid?

It was fine – no bullying or anything – and it was easy because I speak Cantonese, too. My whole family speaks Cantonese and I went to a local kindergarten. I think out of me and my brothers, I’m probably the most Chinese because when I went home, I would watch this educational programme on Chinese TV. But I can’t read it; that’s a huge thing I regret.

How do you deal with negative comments from strangers?

I try not to look at them because when I do, I know I’ll get upset. However, sometimes I can’t help myself. So when I do read through them and find some truth to it, I always reflect on myself and try to improve. Also, with social media, everything is so transparent. There are so many people in this world who have their own opinions, so it’s just how you handle it. You can choose not to let those things affect you and strengthen yourself with a support system of good people around you to keep you from losing sight of what’s real. Those are the people that you should be listening to – not those who don’t even know you, but somehow have an opinion about you. If it’s something that bothers me, I’ll speak with my family and those closest to me.

What’s your relationship with fashion?

My mother loves to shop! Growing up, she would always make me accompany her when she went shopping and I’d sit on the couch to wait; I really wasn’t into it. Now growing up, I find I’m going into my mom’s closet to borrow this and that – and vice versa.

What made you change your mind?

Through modelling and getting to wear all these clothes. If I’m on a shoot and I wear something that I like, I’ll pay attention to who it’s designed by and other details. Also, I started getting into fashion after I started following people on Instagram and getting inspiration.

Who’s someone you follow?

Kendall Jenner, because she’s super laid-back.

I like how fashion has evolved and streetwear is the thing now. I don’t need to stick to the traditions of having to wear heels when I grow up and I don’t have to wear a tight dress to the club anymore. But in terms of high fashion, Gabrielle Chanel is a huge inspiration for me.

Last time, I went to Paris and I got to go see the archives, and some of the things on display were the clothes that Gabrielle used to wear. I just remember the guy opening the closet and a sudden rush of emotions erupted in me. I love tweed; I’m Scottish! That holds

Any other artists that you’re currently into?

KAWS and Tomoo Gokita. I’m in a fortunate situation where I have the privilege of knowing many of today’s popular artists. I think they’re humble, so nice and down to earth. A lot of artists start from nothing. And when some people start from nothing and become the hottest thing on the planet, they get so cocky.

But they aren’t like that. It’s amazing.

What’s your first memory of Chanel?

My mother used to wear Chanel N°5 perfume.

The smell gives me a very nostalgic feeling.

When I smell it, there are so many memories that come back to me.

What’s your everyday go-to style?

A pair of jeans, a jumper and a Chanel bag.

At 25 years old, you’re still very young, but where do you see your life going?

I just want a happy family. [Kevin] Poon always wants to spend time in LA. Before meeting Poon, I always felt most comfortable in Hong Kong and I always wanted a place here. I never thought that I’d move anywhere else, but after being with Poon, I think he wants to move to LA. It doesn’t matter where we are, as long as we’re together and happy.

What is it about LA that you like?

When I first went to LA, I didn’t like it. It’s just so different and everything is so far apart, so you have to drive everywhere. In Hong Kong, it’s so convenient. You can get on the MTR and do multiple things in one day. But after some time, it’s grown on me. The food is good, the scene is always buzzing and there’s a lot of art there.

Speaking of art, what does the word “art” mean to you?

When I think about art, I think of all these artists’ names bouncing around in my head.

I studied art during high school. Those years of studying art made me realise I’m not good at drawing and painting – however, I just like

What are the simple pleasures you indulge in that make you happy?

Eating! And maybe taking a bath while reading on my iPad or Kindle.

How did you and your fiancé meet?

We met three or four years ago at a Balenciaga event that he was hosting.

Do you think you’ve changed at all since meeting him?

I was more reserved before and I was super-organised. But with him, it has to be spontaneous. He tends to book fl ights for trips just the day before. I used to worry about a lot of things, but there’s no point in worrying because it’s all in your head, anyway.

Do you think he’s changed because of you?

His friends said he has changed a lot, but I don’t know that’s from me or if it just comes with age.

What’s the most f*cked-up thing in the world right now?

People littering on the beach. It f*cks up the whole ecosystem, the water, the fish – and then entire species become endangered or possibly even extinct because of such a small action. It’s so easy for you to not throw trash on the ground.

Can you tell us a secret about yourself?

When I laugh really hard, I get goosebumps. #

Fierce and warm tend to be incompatible adjectives when describing someone’s personality.

But that’s not the case for hee-yeon ahn, better known as hani, the Seoul-born actress and singer from K-pop group EXID. They shot to fame in 2014 after a sexy fan-shot video of Hani and the group performing the song “Up & Down” went viral – three months after they initially released it. The track climbed the charts and eventually hit No.1 in Korea, which was a huge reward after three years of fighting their way to the top. been eager to experience new things and is well-known for her strong passion for learning, which has led her to excel in a variety of fields. From music and dancing to triathlons and ballet, she’s multitalented – and multilingual. Beyond her versatility, she’s known for her warm-heartedness, expressing her gratitude and feelings for her loved ones, and caring for people around her more than herself. Even during our photo shoot, while she posed boldly and made her fierce presence felt in front of the camera, she worried about her staff getting exhausted. It was also admirable to see how she put in so much effort to bring out the characters she wanted to express, yet never showed any signs of tiredness throughout, keeping that same spark of energy she had at the beginning.

Now, Hani is ready to show a whole new side of herself as an actress with her new series, XX, where she plays the role of the head bartender at a speakeasy. Pre-released online, the show hit 1.4 million views in its first two episodes for its original and unconventional content. So how are you doing these days?

The series XX that I’ve been filming has just finished, so I’ve been on some variety shows to promote it and catching up on activities that I didn’t have the chance to do for a while.

Oh, I also went on a trip to Thailand.

You just got back from shooting the Survivor-esque reality show Law of the Jungle. How was that?

It was really good – I had so much fun! It was a special episode with all of the best contestants from past episodes, which made it super-fun to shoot. Of course there were many difficulties, since we couldn’t eat, but it was so much fun beyond all that. I can’t wait for it to be aired.

You seem very down-to-earth on TV. What’s your personality like in real life?

In real life, I’m more calm and serious… [laughs] I’m just joking! In fact, my personality is exactly like how I am on TV; my friends always say the same. They like the fact that my TV personality is identical to my real-life personality – and hope that I keep it like that.

On stage, it seems like an entirely different personality pops out. Looking back, have you ever been surprised at yourself?

Yes, I was surprised when I saw I was making excessive gestures. I remember being quite embarrassed when I was looking at it with the other members. I was thinking, “Why did I do that?” But don’t we all get better at what we do through experiences like that?

Your unique voice is just one of your many talents. You’re athletic, smart and even multilingual. What aren’t you good at?

There are thousands of things that I’m not good at! I’m bad at cooking and cleaning. I’m also bad at taking care of my things and I’m always losing them. I’m quite clumsy, too. So I have many things that I’m not good at.

How did you become so versatile?

My parents allowed me to experience a lot from the time I was young. I started learning clarinet and doing triathlons from elementary school, and I also did ballet. Apart from studying, they let me have a wide range of experiences, so I’m very thankful for that.

Working in the entertainment industry, have there been any difficult moments?

There were many – and I think it was inevitable.

I suppose all jobs are the same, having their own difficulties. It was quite tough to not be free to do what I wanted. Being self-conscious all the time was a little hard for me.

What’s your goal as an actress?

I want to be able to do this for a long time.

In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in 2020?

I want to be a good daughter this year. I started living with my mom last year and I told myself I would be good to my parents, but I don’t think I did a good job. This year, I will do my best – and you guys should also do the same!

EXID is a “haven” to me – it’s my safe house.

cast an evolutionary new light (and some shadows) on Goulding’s reinvention of herself, we took refuge in her home on a stormy Monday in February, amidst Storm Ciara, to get deep in conversation.

After just returning from her daily workout, we chatted about her favourite type of coffee, whether or not we should add butter to make it bulletproof coffee, and her brother’s carrot cake. Warm, elegant and completely understated, this side of her personality is one that few see – a step away from the blinding lights of the paparazzi and a world away from the cold London streets.

Among the cool earth-tones, her home and her presence both exuded a cosiness and geniality that made it feel as though we were returning to meet an old friend.

Holding a mug of coffee and leaning back in her chair at the dining table, Goulding spoke of her transformation from naivety and anxiety to maturity – the growth that has moulded her into the woman she is today. She lamented over who she was, and how she has grown to love and appreciate her true self. Her laughter filled the room as she reminisced and contemplated her journey from her childhood in the countryside to her 20s, which were entirely in the limelight. Every word was thought-through. Goulding’s eloquence and intelligence revealed themselves through her consciousness and innate genuineness, as her words flowed and sang like a legato sequence.

A whole generation has grown up listening to your music, witnessing your evolution from “Guns and Horses” and “Starry Eyed” to your recent song “Hate Me” with the late Juice WRLD. What do you think the biggest transformation in your music has been? Have you ever felt a pressure to adapt?

My music has really been a direct reflection of me growing as a woman. It started from being a confused teenager, writing songs about how I saw heartbreak and how I viewed humans’ behaviours towards one another – especially with break-ups and falling in love. That was my favourite subject material, so I was particularly observational of my friends, their situations with their boyfriends and even their families.

I honestly think a huge influence on my music was where I grew up, being in the countryside and having nature around me. I notice such a difference between the nostalgia I have of growing up in the country against that of someone growing up in the city, so a lot of my imagery from my earlier stuff comes from there. When I moved to London, then went to LA to write and work with different producers with such different backgrounds, it completely opened my perspective of thinking. Like, “Oh, maybe my songs aren’t as relatable as I thought they would be.” Because I realised that there’s a whole other world out there, with so many other situations – personal and emotional.

I’ve definitely grown with my music and I do have to admit that when I listen to my older songs, I cringe a bit.

I find them quite cringey. I appreciate what I was trying to say, but I just feel like I’ve learned so much more about how to deal with my own emotions and tough situations that I perhaps would have written them in a different way now.

What’s the message that you’re trying to get across on your new album? And how do you think it compares to your last album, Delirium?

A lot of it’s about discovery of becoming a woman – understanding a deeper love for yourself, away from relationships, finding comfort in solitude. But I couldn’t resist revisiting a few things from my past that caused me turbulence.

Are there any words you’d use to describe yourself in 2010 when your first album came out, compared to 2020?

Oh wow… you know, back then I was extremely curious.

What’s the word for a total mess? [laughs] I guess I was such a curious person, but I was very confused. It’s sad, really, because it was a tough time and I was just finding my way in the world. Not to say a cliché, but I was young, and I had a lot of turbulence in my emotions, my personality and the way I dealt with becoming famous.

At the time, I’d quit university to become a professional singer and I assumed that was just life.

But my job has allowed me to grow in quite an incredible way, actually. I’ve managed to see the world and I’ve managed to meet so many different people, from doing gigs to working with the United Nations, and to working with charities associated with the homeless. I would say now I’m much more of an adventurous person now and I’m a far more peaceful person at the same time.

I’m definitely a different person than who I was then.

Also, I found so much more happiness in myself without relying on another person. I’m married now, so you would think that would be the cue for me to be dependent on the other person, but actually I couldn’t feel more independent than I do right now. There’s something about marriage that has given me a really beautiful security in what I do. Like, “Wow, this person wanted to marry me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me – that’s pretty epic.” But he also gives me the freedom within my own creativity and experimentation, and accepts who I am as a human being. He gives me the most support I could possibly have.

What do you think society is in desperate need of right now? What changes or discourse would you like to see?

I just wish that we had more of an innate compassion for other people. As the world becomes more turbulent and more difficult to digest, with the sheer amount of information we are given every single day, we perhaps have become more inclined to protect ourselves in order to survive. With that, we become more insular in our own worlds, which encourages us to be a little bit more closed and interact with people less than we used to.

Especially with so many conflicting arguments and this inflation of people’s opinions – people give their opinions much more power or credit because of social media. I think that’s what Twitter and Instagram have done. They can be such a positive place, but they have caused a lot of emotional confusion with people. The ability to find happiness in yourself is constantly taken for granted.

There’s a whole materialistic culture that is making people particularly unhappy. There’s a real competition element to things like Instagram. I’ve been reading this book called Trick Mirror, which talks about that, and the fact that there is such a moral high ground as well as virtue-signalling – where we all want our opinion to count, even at the risk of damaging our mental health, by going on Twitter every day. It’s really relevant because we’ve gotten caught up in a digital world where, even if we take ourselves away from the internet or social media, we’re still living in a world where everyone else is on it. It’s very difficult to escape from that. Going back to what I was saying about nature, I grew up in the countryside and I think connecting with nature is one of the best ways you can put yourself back in a peaceful place.

We can’t talk about transformation or evolution without mentioning your style. What are your favourite fashion moments, and are there any that you look back on and laugh at?

Oh my gosh, so many! [laughs] I think my fashion is the same as my music – I’ve definitely evolved and grown and experimented. Your twenties is a great time to figure out what you like to wear and the kind of person you see yourself as, but you keep evolving. My twenties were completely in the spotlight, so anything I experimented with or challenged myself with was pretty much out there. I’ve definitely had times where I dyed my hair a thousand colours, and I’ve tried many different things and designers.

In the past few years, I’ve become so much more conscious and I want to wear environmentally conscious designers – those who really care about the environment and who are aware that fashion is one of the biggest

polluters on the planet. That has been a real learning curve for me, and has really set a precedent with fashion and style. For me, the coolest, most fashionable thing is to wear recycled and sustainable materials, and having the smallest carbon footprint you can have with what you wear. I love the idea of wearing vintage and recycling old outfits by pairing them with other things. That’s been my thing over the past few years.

I think there’s also been a parallel between my confidence with my body, my hair and my skin that has been reflected in what I’ve worn. I look back and on stage, I’ve completely covered up and worn things where I don’t want to show my figure or my skin. Right now, I feel very confident in myself. I’ve been keeping super-healthy and training pretty hard, and I think it does reflect what I end up deciding to wear.

With the rise of social media, art is consumed so differently now. What is art to you? Do you think that what we consider to be art today is comparable to the traditional sense?

I think we can all agree that art has always been a way of expressing ourselves. I went to a University of Oxford talk last week with Tracey Emin and a couple of big people in the art world; it was about art being a commodity, and sometimes being “art or death”. Some artists can’t live without producing what comes into their head – their sadness or their happiness. There has to be something tangible that exists to represent how they feel.

My art is singing, writing, performing – but it’s also my job. I feel like it’s the purest way you can express yourself without boundaries, without having to censor yourself in any way, without having to restrict yourself or put yourself in a box. I suppose it’s difficult because I imagine there are singers out there who would love to make music that is perhaps more experimental, or would love to make music that would never appear on a chart or on a playlist, or on Spotify or Apple Music. But at the same time, you have to try and find that balance.

I feel that making really good pop music is an art; there is an art to it. People say that it’s formulaic, but there’s that idea that you can put music and a voice – a voice that comes with a personality and a whole culture – together and it gets played, and people listen to it and have it as part of their lives. Your songs become other people’s enjoyment, other people’s pleasure, other people’s antidote to sadness. To me, that’s an art and it’s a beautiful thing that we get to do that.

The idea that my music can make people feel better, that people can relate and it helps them get through things – that makes me happy and makes me feel as though I’m achieving something. I don’t think I will ever be fully satisfied as an artist; I always feel there’s something more to achieve. I think Tracey [Emin] was saying you’re never really quite there, but when you feel like you’ve achieved something, it really is a big moment.

Because you feel as though you’ve really tapped into or seen a glimpse of what it is to see yourself as an artist.

You said you’ve become a lot more confident these days.

Do you think your approach to art has changed since you got married?

It’s a strange paradox, because marriage seems as though it should give you some kind of closure for something.

But I feel the opposite – it feels like a kind of freedom.

It was difficult all those years when part of me was on that quest to find that perfect person. Some of that was perhaps part of my job – writing songs about what people go through. And breaking up is one of the hardest things in the world. It really is – that grief… So, finding someone that you finally feel you have that peacefulness and clarity with – there’s a lot of freedom in that. Instead of being someone that was my missing piece, I think he was just someone who supported my happiness, my artistry and my creativity in the best possible way.

What’s something about yourself that you’d like more people to know?

I’m very shy. People think that I’m very confident because of what I do. It’s quite hard explaining that to people, because when I turn up to things – parties and dinners and events I have to do as part of my job – I wonder if people mistake my shyness for something else. It’s not that I don’t want to talk to people or socialise, but I’m really just shy. I was a shy kid and a shy teenager, and I’m a shy woman. When I’m with my friends, obviously I’m not shy; when I’m with my husband, I’m not shy. Generally, I don’t go out that much and I like to stay in. I love to read and watch films. I do a lot of running and walking by myself. I see so many people tweeting that they saw me walking down this street or that street. I’m just always walking around with my backpack by myself. So I’m quite a solitary person and I’m quite shy, but I don’t mind that.

I don’t think it’s a bad quality – I just tend to spend a lot of time by myself.

More than 10 years into your musical career, what has been an unforgettable, defining moment in both your career and your personal life?

In my career, I think signing a record deal was an incredible moment for me. I didn’t ever imagine having a job doing what I loved. It was a magical moment. I was very emotional, and it was just one of those moments where you kind of look at yourself and don’t feel that it’s real. I suppose I’ve gotten to sing at some pretty incredible things, too: I sang for the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, and I sang for William and Kate at their wedding in 2011. I don’t talk about it much, but I just have to accept that it was a pretty mammoth honour. And I sang for the Obamas at the White House Christmas Lights ceremony. Doing speeches as part of my UN work has been – I mean, public speaking is not something I love, but I felt quite proud of myself that I managed to say what I wanted to say, and to speak to some really influential and impressive people.

And of course, getting married was pretty out there – that was pretty epic. It went by in a complete flash, the whole day. A lot of people turned up to see us get married, which was so lovely; we didn’t announce the wedding. York is a beautiful city and my husband’s family is from Yorkshire. It was great to have all our friends and our favourite people all in one place, having fun. In fact, I actually just watched our wedding video yesterday and it was just so good to see everyone having such a good time. I was very specific about the music that I had on the day. We had Jack Garratt, who was incredible – he did our first dance. Serpentwithfeet, who is this wonderful singer. I had a lot of folk music; we had Ola Gjeilo, a Norwegian composer who is one of my favourites. Oh – and Craig David, who was my first concert when I was like 12 years old!

Youth behaviour has changed dramatically due to technology. Do you have any words of wisdom for your young fans out there who have social anxiety?

Like I was saying earlier, social media has given us this alternative power to what’s really going on. Without realising it, we’re slightly abandoning our real selves, March 2020_#legend_87

“I don’t think I will ever be fully satisfied as an artist; I always feel there’s something more to achieve” ellie goulding because we end up conditioning ourselves in a certain way to make ourselves more compatible with social media. So we keep losing sight of ourselves a bit. I can only really say from my own experience what I think helps.

The obvious things are to try to distance yourself from it as much as possible, which is difficult, because everyone is in the social-media boat. Again, I always say reconnecting with nature, because there’s definitely something in us that has that natural affinity with the natural world. That’s my biggest one. I think being okay with your own happiness and your own company, and not feeling as though you have to rely on external things.

For me, being the happiest version of myself is knowing that I’m creating, that I’m as healthy as I can be, that I’m eating well and that I’m doing as much as I can for the environment, because it’s such a huge issue. The plasticpollution issue and climate change are two big things that we can all make small changes in our lives to help.

You can’t do everything. There are so many things you can do to make the world a better place, but when you’re working or when you’re busy, you can’t always do those things. For my mind and for the people and the world around me, as long as I know I’m doing as much as I can, I feel as peaceful as I can be.

What’s the best piece of life advice you’ve ever heard?

The Dalai Lama said, “Only the development of compassion and understanding for others can bring us the tranquillity and happiness we all seek.”

What would we find in your handbag or backpack on a day-to-day basis?

I’m pretty into supplements; I call it bio-hacking! There are so many things you can take to enhance your stamina, your creativity, your cognitive functions, your body, your gut… everything. There are so many things you can do to create the strongest physical version of yourself.

So I take a lot of supplements around with me – a big bag of everything. Antioxidant juice, coffee with a little seaweed in it, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, milk thistle that’s good for the liver… I take around so much.

And there’s my make-up bag – I always carry makeup, regardless of whether I’m wearing it or not. I always take around Dr Sebagh face wipes and peels, because I never know when I’ll need one of those. I bring shampoo, conditioner, face wash, turmeric and Sunday Riley’s vitamin C oil. I’m always prepared for anything because

I never know where my day is going to go at the moment.

Unless I’m on tour or in the studio, my days can be all over the place, so I take everything I could possibly need with me. I always carry a spare jumper, socks and underwear because I train all the time, and I usually run or walk around London.

I’ve toured and travelled so much that I know what I need to a tee. I always bring my water bottle so I never have to buy plastic bottles from the shop. Tea bags – because I love green tea – and protein bars. So I have exactly what I may need during the day. Chances are, I don’t use it, but sometimes I do.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

I have a really lame karaoke song – not lame, because I love it! – but it’s Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do it for You”. I just love singing that song! It’ll either be that or Beyoncé, or an old rock song that I used to listen to when I was a kid, like Metallica or something. Oh, and the Spice Girls’ “2 Become 1” comes up a lot.

With your album release coming soon, do you have any aspirations for the upcoming year and decade?

I’d like continue where I left off. I love doing what I do – and it’s my job. I just hope I can continue to inspire people, travel the world sustainably and send out a positive message.

Who’s your #legend?

I’m going to say Björk. I have loads of amazing females who have inspired me, but she has consistently defined for me what it means to be an artist. Although we don’t make similar music, I really aspired to be like her when I was younger, and I was completely transfixed by her performances and her wardrobe. The way she merged classical music with electronic, worked with so many artists, with so many different elements coming together – and not just that, but she created everything herself; she was her own producer.

I only recently, in the past few years – because my husband works in art – discovered collaborating with artists, which sounds crazy. I always worked with stage designers to make a big epic live show, but now I’m looking more into collaborations with other artists, which I madly somehow didn’t think of before. I think so much more about that – and how I can reduce my carbon footprint on tour. # March 2020_#legend_93

“tall Chinese girl”, 24-year-old German native Kicki Yang Zhang is known for her popular YouTube channel and Instagram feed, featuring everything from her beauty routine (and how to give your skin that glazed donut look) to shaving her head and her cute drawings. But she wasn’t always known for her extroverted personality and colourful looks. She grew up in a mid-sized city with a middle-class family and didn’t have a lot of friends in school, so she spent a lot of time drawing and taking photos.

Like many creative souls, she was bullied in school, so art was a way for her to cope with negative emotions, but she never thought it would become a career. She dropped out of university after a few semesters because she felt all the teachers taught her was how to fit in at a company and please your employer – basically, how to not be yourself. That’s when she decided to move to Berlin to pursue her dream of working in the creative industries – and she hasn’t regretted it.

What comes to mind when you hear the word “art”?

Emotion and expression.

How did you first discover make-up?

My interest sparked when I discovered YouTube and all the tutorials. It was a brand-new world for me. The only bummer was that all of the girls had a different eye shape than me. It took a long time, with a lot of failures and errors, to get my eye make-up right. I had a phase my dad calls the “panda phase” since I didn’t know how to apply eyeshadow properly – I just had a huge circle of black around my eyes. Now I sometimes post tutorials to help my monolid sisters out so they don’t have to go through the same phase as me.

What’s your go-to skincare routine?

I’m very into skincare and try new products all the time. But I think the most important part is to have a two-step cleansing routine when removing your make-up – an oil cleanser first to remove the make-up, then a mild cleanser to remove excess oil. How do you feel about current beauty trends? Are there any trends you like or any you’d like to see die?

I love that the general beauty trends are getting crazier.

A lot of people ask me if I go outside with my face painted, and I do occasionally – but not enough. I hope in the future it becomes more socially acceptable to wear crazy make-up like this outside. How sick is that – a walking piece of art?!

The only trend I want to see die is how the Kardashians and Jenners are getting credit for make-up trends that drag queens and black girls pioneered.

How did you find the confidence to express yourself in such a unique manner?

I think a lack of self-confidence has a lot to do with the fear of what other people might think of you. I guess at some point I realised it didn’t make any sense and I didn’t care what other people thought of me anymore. But it was a long process – and it’s something you need to train yourself to do.

How did you decide to use your face as a canvas?

I see every surface as something that can be drawn and painted on, so why not the face? Nature made something so symmetrical and imperfect at the same time, and faces are so unique. And it might sound weird, but sometimes I’m just inspired and amazed by how a face is constructed.

How do you decide what to put on your face each day?

I don’t really plan my look. I have the colour palette in front of me and just start, and see where it takes me.

Is there any ultimate look that you’re looking forward to creating?

One day when I have a lot of time, I want to extend my make up and do a full-body piece. Maybe I’m going to save that for when I’m pregnant.

Many of the girls that exist on social media today have encountered body issues at some point in their lives.

Do you have any experience with this?

I was doing quite a bit of modelling when I was a teen and I encountered that almost on a daily basis. I just tell my girls 98_#legend_March 2020

all the time: the models you see in commercials and think, “Wow she’s perfect” – all of them have something about their bodies that they don’t like. Everyone is extremely critical about themselves. I think it’s great that now more “normal” and plus-size models are being booked for campaigns to show the idea that, actually, every body type is beautiful and “ideal”.

What’s a typical day in the life of Kicki?

That’s the beauty of being a freelancer – every day is different! But I have a few daily rituals to keep me sane. Simple things, like 20 minutes of meditation in the morning.

What word would you use to sum up your 2020 so far?

Travel. I’ve barely been at home! [laughs] What’s one misconception about you people have that you’d like to clear up?

I feel like I’m pretty open about everything. The only thing I can think of is that some people think I come from money, and that my parents pay for apartment and living expenses. I can proudly say I haven’t asked my parents for a single penny and have been self-sufficient for years.

How does it feel to be someone of Chinese descent living in Berlin?

There isn’t much of a Chinese community – or at least I don’t know of it. But I think Berlin is Germany’s most international city and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in Germany. I’ve met so many third-culture kids like me and it’s great to exchange thoughts. It’s a great feeling to know that we’re not alone, even though we feel like we don’t belong anywhere fully.

Richard Mille has us running in circles as he takes on a different shape once again with the RM 33-02 hen Richard Mille releases a watch featuring a round case, worldwide attention descends upon it with full force. Humans crave change just as much as they tend to resist it, and any veer off the road of tonneau shapes into round town will inevitably draw a crowd. If the new RM 33-02 looks somewhat familiar, it’s probably because Richard Mille ushered in the previous decade with its predecessor: the first ultra-thin round case watch, the RM 033, in 2011.

The 41.7mm case of the RM 33-02 is 4mm smaller than the RM 033, and is presented in a mix of red gold and carbon TPT, the latter making its debut in an automatic round watch.

All this makes for a sporty-luxe version that’s more contemporary in dimension and suitable for everyday wear. “We have reinterpreted its aesthetics without doing a disservice to the original version by accentuating its lines,” notes Julien Boillat, the brand’s technical director, who also oversaw the RM 033’s creation.

“Meanwhile, the exterior decoration, case and dial have been reworked to project a sportier vibe. The RM 33-02 thus achieves a delicate synthesis of the so-called ‘lifestyle’ style and sporty style.”

The skeletonised RMXP1 calibre houses a 45-hour power reserve and is expertly crafted from grade-5 titanium, keeping a steady 3Hz thanks to its variable-inertia balance. The movement can by wound bi-directionally via an off-centre platinum micro-rotor that’s positioned rear-side to minimise the entire movement’s overall thickness. Despite its slim silhouette, the unique architecture and delicate finishing hasn’t been compromised in any way; the baseplate was tended to entirely 116_#legend_March 2020

by hand, initially wet-sandblasted and treated with Titalyt. Meanwhile, the microblasting, stretch and satin-finished surfaces along with the anglage create a mesmerising interplay of light and shadow from the deliberate and expressive lines of the skeletonisation.

Moving to the exterior, it would be remiss of the RM 33-02 not to reference design characteristics of the brand’s quintessential tonneau shape. The case has incorporated the contours of the tonneau into its round shape and the eye is drawn to the carbon TPT bezel, which is accentuated by a satin-finished case band in red gold. The hypnotising battle between light and dark continues dial-side, with the 5N red gold hour markers positioned along two titanium rails fixed to the flange and movement, bringing a sense of dimension, unifor mit y and continuit y, and f ur the r highlighting the round case shape. It’s worth noting that the grade-5 titanium spline screws used within the case and bridges offer greater torque control during the assembly stages and will age well. A black rubber strap brings a sense of increased informality to the piece and blends in seamlessly with the case.

With only 140 pieces to go around, you’ll have to contend with the full population for this one. It’s 2020, after all, so Richard Mille has deemed the RM 33-02 equally suitable for women as it is for men, whether dressed up or down – and we certainly don’t disagree with that proclamation.

ne could only imagine Breitling CEO Georges Kern’s glee upon hearing the news that Charlize Theron, Adam Driver and Brad Pitt all garnered nominations for this year’s Academy Awards, the Hollywood movie industry’s highest accolade. Pitt walked home with a golden statuette that night for Best Supporting Actor in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

The three stars are members of the Breitling Cinema Squad, which was formed in 2018 following the #squadonamission campaign that launched in July that year. The idea was that squad members, who are recognised experts in their respective fields, would bring out the best of Breitling’s core values of action, purpose and pioneering spirit. Apart from the Cinema Squad, Breitling has also formed the Surfers Squad, the Explorers Squad and the Triathlon Squad.

The best in the world, the greatest in their field – there’s no doubt that Theron, Driver and Pitt are some of the most sought-after actors in the business. Theron, who previously won an Oscar for her role in Monster, was nominated as Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in Bombshell, while Driver was nominated for the second year running, this time as Best Actor in a Leading Role for his part in Marriage Story. Pitt’s win is his second Oscar; he had previously won as a producer for the 2014 Best Picture, 12 Years a Slave.

“From the beginning, we’ve pointed out that our Breitling squads are incredible sets of ambassadors with a shared profession, passion or mission,” says Kern. “They are recognised as the best in the world at what they do. Nothing could illustrate that

more clearly than having three members of our Cinema Squad nominated for Oscars in the same year!”

On the night of the awards, Driver sported the Breitling Premier Automatic 40, an understated watch from the brand’s elegant Premier line. The name was revived from Breitling’s archives and evokes the company’s elegant watches of the 1940s. The Automatic 40 is the simplest of the collection, which also includes other chronograph and three-hand versions. Driver chose the model in stainless steel, with a beautiful and minimal silver dial matched with a black alligator strap.

Beating inside the watch is a self-winding COSC-certified movement, the Breitling Calibre 37, with a power reserve of 40 hours – and it’s a Breitling that’s emblematic of a squad of all-time cinema greats.

n october 2018, Banksy shocked the art world with one of the boldest tricks in art history. His now-iconic painting Girl with Balloon self-destructed in front of an astonished audience after being sold for US$1.4 million. In a video released soon after, the celebrated anonymous artist revealed that he had built the shredder five years earlier in case the painting was ever put up for auction. As Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art for Europe, mentioned soon after the memorable stunt, the world got “Banksy-ed”. The stunt broke the internet and gave a whole new meaning to performance art.

More recently, a ripe banana generated a lot of buzz. It was duct-taped to the wall by absurdist Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan at the 2019 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach.

The banana – yes, a regular supermarket one – became the centre of attention at the art fair and was simply everywhere on social media.

The work, titled Comedian, ended up selling for US$120,000, with numerous brands riding the tide of its viral popularity to post parodies and generate even more hype. The infamous banana was eventually eaten by another artist for the sake of performance art. The buyers, it goes without saying, weren’t purchasing the “masterpiece” itself (as it would have eventually gone rotten), but they bought into the “idea” and the “concept”, which critics and art lovers alike struggle to comprehend.

Banksy is known to be a rebel with a cause.

In his oeuvre, he explores social and political issues, shedding light on inequalities and hypocrisy, while Cattelan has based his career on disruptive artistic statements. Their art, like that of a handful of elite contemporary artists, also undoubtedly owes a lot of its popularity to the hype surrounding it. The aesthetic and theatrical components of their work, in fact, make for viral content.

But while the irreverent talent and provocative genius of Banksy and Cattelan make them undeniable icons, and with a pair of generations (millennials and Gen-Z) obsessed with finding, sharing and snapping the “next big thing” – the art world isn’t immune in an age dominated by hype culture. On the contrary, just like fashion, TV, cinema, food and beauty, art and the literary market are increasingly falling victim.

In such a volatile and adrenalinedriven ecosystem, how do good artists and works emerge – and survive? And how does art evolve as a form of collective memory?

“I think with the popularity of social media, it becomes a lot easier for people to access art as artists and galleries use social media to promote themselves, which is an efficient and cost-effective marketing channel,” says Judy Inn, the director of Art Next Expo, a platform that connects emerging artists with the world of art professionals and collectors. “Some museums have even changed their policies from ‘no photo’ to actively encouraging visitors to engage and share on social media. And in some respects, the ‘viral effect’ is helping to promote art.”

As a matter of fact, artists aren’t that different from celebrities or influencers when it comes to managing their digital presence.

Likes and engagement can contribute to the success or failure of an exhibition, or increase the price of a piece. tomorrow. The drop culture, which has often seen collaborations between fashion, art and other creative industries, also functions according to these principles.

I think we should use this information as a reference and always have an open and inquisitive mind.

In big cities and smaller urban centres alike, hordes of “hype kids” queue for hours to snap an Instagrammable meal, to purchase a limited-edition pair of sneakers or to photograph “the next big thing” – usually a neon “art” installation that displays a philosophical quote.

Art has always been related to its relative success and, later, to how much the upper classes and the aristocracy were willing to pay for it. However, especially throughout

the 19th and 20th centuries, the beauty, social power and historical value of paintings and sculptures and their role to shape collective memory were fairly independent from their popularity, which in turn explains why some artists became even more celebrated after their deaths.

A decade or two ago, people used to go to museums to walk around with audio guides – just because they wanted to, not because they’d look good on Instagram. My parents would drag me to cities just to visit museums and monuments. We went to Amsterdam purely to see the Van Gogh Museum and to Madrid to see the Museo Nacional del Prado – and we don’t have a single picture of them. Certainly, this still happens. Way too often, however, young people hobnob at art fairs and galleries in front of hyped pieces and installations without knowing anything about the style, the work or the artist.

“I don’t believe great art thrives on endless hype and hysteria. I don’t believe young talent is served by such babble. I believe new art needs a concentrated, serious, critical culture,” art journalist and critic Jonathan Jones wrote in British newspaper The Guardian in a 2009 piece about contemporary exhibitions and the need to “lose the hype”. Jones, like many of his contemporaries, often expresses his frustration on this topic, which is ultimately connected to the overall way a lot of us consume and appreciate culture in general.

Last summer, when the JC Contemporary art gallery at Hong Kong’s Tai Kwun hosted Murakami vs Murakami, a survey exhibition of superstar Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, thousands of people queued to take pictures of their feet and the gallery’s floor, which was covered with the artist’s flower motif. The experience was advertised as “Instagrammable” and “unmissable”. On a steamy summer day, while queuing for a good hour for the exhibition, I asked an acquaintance and fellow hype victim: “Do you also like Murakami and his aesthetic?”

Laughing, she replied: “I don’t know him… but I need to take Insta-pictures of the floor.” # March 2020_#legend_123

WELLNESS AWAITS

The city’s hidden retreat, Asaya at the five-star Rosewood Hong Kong, has become a must-visit wellness destination in Asia, writes jerrie lo 134_#legend_March 2020

is essential and that making some me-time is of the utmost importance these days. But it’s not always easy to figure out where to start and make the most of it, especially if you’re always on the go. Look no further – the Rosewood Hong Kong’s newly launched wellness retreat Asaya is the ideal starting place. There, you’ll disconnect with the world for just a bit to help return to a zen state of mind, where you’ll be reminded to love yourself again.

From the moment you step off the lift and into Asaya, it feels like you’ve just emerged from some sort of a sci-fi device that immediately transported you to Phuket.

After I check in, my therapist leads me to the entrance. I’m shocked as I stroll into a country-style garden filled with greenery and botanicals. This isn’t the dictionary definition of “spa” – it’s a bit closer to “heaven”. Looking at the straightforward, modern design by New York-based designer Tony Chi makes you feel so calm and, at the same time, invigorated.

Before the Asaya experience begins, I’ve already chosen the facial treatment in advance: the one-hour Lift by Sunday Riley.

First, I’m asked to do a skin-analysis test using the spa’s Pear 3D system to make sure that the treatment suits my skin. The results come back, and I find them very useful and satisfying. By analysing the core elements such as pores, wrinkles, elasticity, spots, skin tone, porphyrin ratio and moisture, I’m happy to discover that my skin’s age matches my actual age. At the same time, it also informs me of the areas I have to work on daily in order to maintain good skin, which is super-informative.

Next, my therapist introduces me to all the facilities, such as the bathhouse and the sixth-floor lounge. I put down my bag in the suite and change into sportswear for the one-hour posture correction session, led by the highly experienced sports therapist Terry Burge. At first, he kick-starts things with a Q&A session about my occupation, working hours, office environment and habits. Then, I’m asked to stand up so Burge can examine my standing posture. He finds a few problematic areas and starts working on my pressure zones through a series of stretches and twists. The skills that I’m taught can be applied anywhere – at work or home.

Here comes the most highly anticipated part for me. I’m more than excited to try the cult beauty brand Sunday Riley because

I’ve been seeing a lot of good reviews about it on YouTube. My therapist enters with a warm welcome and introduces me to the treatment. To start, she does the usual skin-prep procedures, such as cleansing and exfoliating. She applies some cream on my face and performs some facelift magic with a red-light LED collagen machine, followed by the Sunday Riley CEO Glow face oil – at last!

Afterwards, I look into the mirror and of course take my phone out for a post-spa selfie without make-up. I’m simply stunned. It looks like I literally woke up like this.

I walk out of the suite into the garden, as the sun shines on me and I say hello to my baby skin once again. #
