HARWOOD DISTRICT CELEBRATES TRIPLE MICHELIN RECOGNITION

Harwood District is celebrating a momentous achievement as three of its signature destinations are honored with MICHELIN recognition. Mercat Bistro and Stillwell’s have earned the coveted Recommended by MICHELIN distinction for 2024, joining an elite group of only 57 Texas restaurants to receive this prestigious recognition. This group is the first MICHELIN Guide for the state covering Austin, Dallas, and Houston. The MICHELIN Guide had

previously been limited to major cities in Europe, Asia, and select U.S. cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. This marks a defining milestone in Harwood District's ongoing commitment to excellence in hospitality, dining, and design.

The accolades come on the heels of Hôtel Swexan being awarded the prestigious MICHELIN guide “One Key” and being recognized as one of the most outstanding hotels in the country. The

selection process involved rigorous evaluation across five categories: architecture and interior design, service quality and consistency, overall personality and character, value for money, and the hotel's significant contribution to enhancing the guest experience within its unique setting. This is the second-ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, adding selections from all across the country to a list that previously included hotels only from select locations.

Harwood’s culinary excellence was recognized by MICHELIN with honors for Mercat Bistro and Stillwell’s Steakhouse—the only steakhouse in Texas to receive this distinction.

A Vision Realized: Leadership Drives Excellence

This remarkable achievement is a testament to the visionary leadership of Taylor Kearney, Vice President of Culinary, and James Ash, Director of Culinary. Together, they have cultivated an environment where innovation, quality, and hospitality converge, creating a dining scene that continues to attract attention from both locals and visitors alike.

The MICHELIN Impact

The MICHELIN Guide is known for its rigorous standards and prestigious reputation in the global dining community. Earning the Recommended by MICHELIN recognition is a significant achievement for any restaurant, representing a commitment to the highest level of culinary craftsmanship, service, and atmosphere. For Mercat Bistro and Stillwell’s, this acknowledgment places them in the company of the state's most celebrated dining establishments.

Mercat Bistro, with its vibrant yet refined French-inspired fare, and Stillwell’s, a modern take on a traditional steakhouse, have both become integral parts of Harwood District’s gastronomic landscape. The recognition not only showcases the restaurants’ culinary excellence but also highlights Harwood District’s role in shaping Dallas into a premier dining destination.

Looking ahead, Harwood is committed to further enriching Dallas’ cultural and culinary scene. With continued investment in innovative concepts, exceptional dining, and groundbreaking design, the district is poised to remain at the forefront of luxury living and hospitality in North Texas.

As a community, Harwood District continues to offer a destination where the extraordinary is not just expected—it’s delivered. For those seeking unparalleled dining, world-class service, and a one-of-a-kind experience, Harwood stands as the benchmark of excellence.

MEET JAIME SMITH

Head Sommelier

Jaime Smith loves wine. As a sommelier, Jaime has a savant-like ability to absorb and astutely apply an expansive knowledge of all things related to wine. He was appointed the very first Director of Wine at the prestigious MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1998, Smith helped open the AAA Five Diamond award-winning Bellagio as the sommelier of Le Cirque and Osteria del Circo, and began teaching as an adjunct professor at UNLV. In 2000, he accepted the position of Head Buyer and Sommelier at Charlie Palmer's Aureole at Mandalay Bay. During his five-year tenure, he played a pivotal role in creating the world’s first digital wine list—the restaurant’s ingenious solution to managing its 4,000-plus wine labels and five vast cellars— and garnered the Wine Spectator Grand Award for five consecutive years.

More recently, Smith served as the Director of Communication & Education Development for Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada. His awards and certifications include Best Sommelier in America (Aureole) and Best Wine List in America by the National Restaurant Association. He has also held positions as Wine Director at Caesars Palace, Harrah’s, The Four Seasons, and Del Frisco’s.

Jaime has a wonderfully overachieving son, the most amazing partner, Donna, and was born to ride a bike. He has founded two nonprofits and dedicates his life to mentoring and eating pastries.

Clockwise from top: James Ash, Director of Culinary, and Taylor Kearney, VP of Culinary, attended the MICHELIN Awards in Houston; Stillwell's ultra-luxe atmosphere; Luxury boutique Hôtel Swexan was awarded a MICHELIN Key and named one of the top 100 Best New Hotels of the Year.

JONES DAY TO RELOCATE TO HARWOOD NO. 15

CONTINUING NEARLY 30-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH HARWOOD INTERNATIONAL

For nearly three decades, Jones Day has been an integral part of the Harwood District story. Since relocating to Harwood No. 3 in 1995, the global law firm has witnessed and contributed to the district’s remarkable transformation. What began as a collection of three office buildings totaling 491,000 square feet has grown into a sprawling 19-cityblock campus encompassing over 3 million square feet of mixed-use development. Today, Jones Day is preparing to embark on the next chapter of its Harwood journey with a relocation to Harwood No. 15.

Slated for completion in 2027, Harwood No. 15 represents the future of office design, offering 23 floors of Class AA space with over 340,000 rentable square feet. The tower will house Jones Day’s new home on floors 19-21, totaling 73,359 square feet. This move not only reinforces the firm’s commitment to the district but also highlights Harwood’s enduring appeal to world-class tenants seeking best-in-class office environments.

The decision to relocate aligns with Jones Day’s vision for a modern, collaborative workspace that supports growth and talent retention. With nearly 125 lawyers in Texas—more than 70 in Dallas alone—the firm continues to expand its presence in the state. Harwood No. 15, with

its expansive rooftop park, spa-like wellness facilities, state-of-the-art fitness center, and technology-forward conference spaces, is perfectly designed to meet the needs of today’s top-tier professionals. Located just steps from the Katy Trail and La Rue Perdue, the building will also introduce a new restaurant concept by Harwood Hospitality Group, complementing its portfolio of 20+ acclaimed dining destinations.

The move comes at a time of significant momentum for Harwood International. In 2024, the district recorded its best leasing year since 2019, surpassing its previous high of 328,000 square feet with a recordbreaking 342,163 square feet of new leases. With a 93% occupancy rate and some of the highest lease rates in Dallas, Harwood District continues to set the standard for urban work-life integration.

As Harwood No. 15 takes shape, Harwood International is once again partnering with world-renowned architects Kengo Kuma & Associates and Corgan, as well as its in-house teams, HCMS and HDF, to deliver an office tower that reflects its legacy of innovation and excellence. For Jones Day, the move signals not just a continuation of a nearly 30-year partnership but a bold step forward into a new era of workplace sophistication.

Jones Day highlighted their charity of choice, Breakthrough T1D, a leading organization dedicated to advancing awareness and funding for Type 1 Diabetes research and management. Through this partnership, Harwood has joined forces with Breakthrough T1D to support their mission and create meaningful connections within the District.

Harwood tenants gathered at Tequila Social for an informative happy hour focused on spreading awareness about the auto immune disease. Representatives from Breakthrough T1D shared insights on how the community can get involved - whether through volunteering, participating in the upcoming fundraising walk, or joining other exciting events to support the cause.

Harwood No. 15’s ground level will feature a new dining concept by Harwood Hospitality Group, blending work and leisure with an elevated culinary experience.
Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, Harwood No. 15 showcases a striking blend of sleek modern design and natural materials, reflecting innovation and sustainability.

GET TO KNOW HARWOOD'S CULINARY DIRECTOR CHEF JAMES

Chef James Ash, a seasoned leader in luxury hospitality, drives culinary creativity as the Culinary Director of Harwood Hospitality. With an impressive career that spans prestigious destinations from Laguna Beach to Las Vegas, Chef James brings a wealth of experience to Dallas. We recently sat down with him to explore his culinary journey, from his love for French cuisine to the unforgettable experiences that shaped his approach to cooking.

Can you share with our readers a story about what inspired you to become a chef?

Thank you so much for having me! I'm excited to share a bit about my journey with your readers. Growing up in Southern California, I spent a lot of time skateboarding and developed a deep interest in art, especially street art and graffiti. My first job in the culinary world was as a dishwasher at The Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Beach. It was there that I discovered the creative side of cooking, which really intrigued me. The chef at The Ritz-Carlton encouraged me to travel and gain experience in other restaurants, and that's how I ended up in Aspen, Colorado. This move was a pivotal moment in my career, as it allowed me to truly dive into the culinary arts and grow as a chef.

Do you have a specific type of food that you focus on? What was it that first drew you to cooking that type of food? Can you share a story about that with us?

I oversee a variety of culinary concepts, so I stay well-versed in multiple cuisines and cultures. However, my true love lies in French food, and many of my dishes are based on the fundamentals of French cuisine. My journey into this style of cooking began with the first chef I worked for, who was French. Later, I had the opportunity to work at a Michelinstarred French restaurant, which really pushed my cooking skills to the next level.

I was drawn to French culture, especially the discipline they bring to the kitchen. The chef I worked for was quite an eccentric character, and he loved to keep the French top stove extra hot. He would even remove the regulators so that the center would glow red! We had four of these stoves on the line, and the thermometer in my chef coat pocket would read a steady 125 degrees.

In your experience, what is the key to creating a dish that guests are crazy about?

The key to creating a dish that guests love is not to overcomplicate it. As chefs, we often strive to push our boundaries and create complex dishes. However, in doing so, we can sometimes lose sight of the guest's perspective and end up with a dish that is “too chefy” and while appreciated by a few chef friends, doesn't resonate with a broad audience.

I like to focus on keeping dishes approachable and making sure that the presentation is beautiful and interesting - elements that excite guests, like a fun texture or an unexpected flavor twist. These are what guests remember and talk about the next day.

What is the perfect meal for you? Q.

I've had many delicious meals at great restaurants and hotels around the world, but for me, nothing beats the simple pleasure of coming home late from work, with everyone asleep, the phone off, and the dogs lounging on the couch. Sitting there watching TV and enjoying a bowl of cereal is pure comfort. It's those quiet, uncomplicated moments that remind me that life is good —and I will never fully grow up.

(continued) It was so hot that we used to take bets on whether the new interns or stagiaires would pass out from the heat. The average pass-out rate was about 3 out of 10, and I admit, I made a bit of ‘side hustle cash’ from those bets! It was an intense environment, but it taught me a lot about resilience and precision in cooking.

Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that has happened to you since you became a chef? What was the lesson or take away you took out of that story?

After spending 15 years in Las Vegas, I've definitely seen some wild things. Las Vegas is a place where anything can happen, and it's never short on surprises or unusual requests. The lesson I took away from my time there was to always be prepared for the unexpected. Las Vegas taught me that no matter how unusual or outlandish a request might seem, there's always a way to make it happen. It's part of the fun of being a chef.

Where does your inspiration for creating come from?

My inspiration comes from my team and the people I surround myself with. Many of my friends are in creative fields—chefs, tattoo artists, custom car builders, graffiti artists, and clothing designers. When creating menus, I strongly believe in collaboration. Discussing new dishes with the team often brings out great ideas, whether it's a tweak to the components, presentation, or flavor profile. When that doesn’t work I open Instagram and steal stuff (just kidding about the stealing part). The creative energy from the people around me and the collaborative process with my team are my primary sources of daily creativity.

EXPLORING

THE BARBIER-MUELLER COLLECTION X HARWOOD DISTRICT

A GUIDE TO THE BARBIER-MUELLER COLLECTION'S SPECTACULAR ART AND CULTURAL GEMS

The Harwood District is an art-filled neighborhood designed to enrich the cultural experience of visitors, tenants, and patrons. The Ann & Gabriel BarbierMueller Museum: The Samurai Collection, at the heart of Harwood’s arts program, is one of the only museums outside of Japan dedicated to the bold and majestic arts of the samurai.

Throughout public lobbies and private residential lobbies around the District, an array of objects from The Barbier-Mueller Collection are also on display. Local art has its showcase in the District at Magnolias: Sous Le Pont, the popular French-inspired coffee shop with a picturesque teal façade. Use this Art Map to guide your exploration and share your finds on social media with #harwoodart.

Explore the complex culture of the samurai warrior by viewing their remarkable armor and battle gear. Home to one of the largest collections of samurai armor in the world, the display covers the span of samurai history from the ninth to nineteenth century.

View a dynamic display of armored samurai on horseback surrounded by towering battle banners. Samurai were originally mounted warriors known for their expert skills in archery and horses were an essential component to the samurai’s success in battle.

Examine nineteenthcentury armor of the Nuosu culture of South Asia. Made of lacquered leather and decorated in geometric and floral motifs, these armors are very lightweight. On horseback, a warrior wears an ensemble complete with a horse-hair cape and an impressive shield.

In this space you will find an elaborate Nuosu armor to examine. The armband and cape would have provided extra protection in combat. Armors of this type have been worn for centuries by the Nuosu people.

Encounter the presence of samurai warriors in this lobby. Their refined armor could take five artisans up to a year to construct.

The lobby of Harwood No. 10 showcases an array of armor from around the world. Though a variety of shapes, materials, and textures gives each component its own identity and personality, they share the common purpose of enabling survival.

DISCOVER THE SPIRIT OF THE SAMURAI

As you enter the lobby of 3100 McKinnon on the Katy Trail, you'll be welcomed by a nineteenth-century Chinese wooden horse statue.

Two Japanese warriors on horseback flanking the building’s entrance meet you as you enter. Enjoy the serene lobby complete with a miniature garden presided over by a large bronze sculpture of a bodhisattva (enlightened being).

With over 100 samurai objects, Docent will showcase the artistic side of the Japanese warrior spirit. Alongside intricate helmets and armor, a shrine (c. 1800) enhances the space's allure, offering a glimpse into the reverence Shinto travelers paid at roadside shrines like this one.

Le Festin by Gilles Barbier is a striking food sculpture crafted from resin. It depicts a surreal feast of hyper-realistic dishes, blending abundance with decay. With intricate details like melting cheeses and overripe fruits, the piece explores themes of indulgence and impermanence, inspiring thought and conversation.

Inspiration radiates in the District’s coffee house with impressive local art adorning the walls. Artists are handselected and exhibitions rotate continuously throughout the year. Every exhibition brings a new flavor of creative energy to Magnolias, which only adds to the dynamism of the space.

TREASURES FROM THE SAMURAI SHOP

Nestled within The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection, the Samurai Shop offers a curated selection of unique items inspired by Japan's samurai legacy. From books and prints to handcrafted souvenirs and jewelry, each piece reflects the artistry and history of the samurai era. Visitors can take home a tangible connection to the museum’s remarkable displays, making it a perfect stop for gifts or mementos that honor the craftsmanship and spirit of Japan’s warrior tradition.

The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection houses magnificent objects that have been selectively amassed by the Barbier-Mueller family for more than 30 years. The Museum, located in the historic St. Ann’s School Building, features rotating displays of samurai armor, helmets, masks, and weaponry. Each item was created with extraordinary skill and creativity to protect the samurai in the fiercest of battle. Visitors will come face to face with the warriors of Japan’s military past.

See the craftsmanship of southern India in an elaborately carved seventeenth century parade horse. Originally brightly decorated with pigment, this sculpture would have been carried in processions. Also study a nearby samurai textile and helmet.
