I use my hydration bladder regularly and use the BonDry insert to ensure I have a clean hydration system that’s mold-free
Exercise bands
On the road, I work to stay healthy Exercise bands and yoga/strength training kneepads (not pictured) are my go-tos for packable multi-purpose equipment.
Knitting supplies Knitting on the drive or in the evenings is so relaxing for me and lets the time pass so quickly I enjoying doing knit-alongs with Knit Collage and find their yarn so cozy and dreamy and video tutorials perfect for trying new techniques. For knitting needles, my go to is the Chiaogoo interchangable twist on kit with a wide-range of needle sizes and cords
Electronic organizer - Next to my Vuori hoodie, this is my second favorite thing in my bag. I NEVER leave home without it It literally holds all of the power - ha ha! I include my laptop charger, charging cords with various tips (lightening cord, USB-C, mini-USB), adapters for my Garmin watch, power cubes etc...I usually have enough extras in case one of the kids forgets a charger
Qalo Silicon Rings
When headed outside, I generally leave my nice jewelry home. The Qalo silicon bands provide a great sporty and low-priced option

I’ll admit, I have about a dozen pairs of these because they are so cute and relatively inexpensive. They don’t slip or bounce, are light weight, and polarized Need a pair for a specific sport, holiday, attitude expression? This will be your favorite store.
My husband and I both work from the road and this laptop desk is fantastic for working while on the bed. with snaps- This is an oldie but a goody, likely found on resale marketplaces. It’s a cozy wrap scarf the size of a lap blanket It’s great to have in the truck, at the campfire, and lounging in the RV. It’s also cute to wear out and about in the early spring and fall
Adjustable laptop desk
Red Rooster Coffee
Rooster Coffee is in Floyd, VA one of the cutest little towns we ’ ve passed through on our camping journeys I make sure to grab enough coffee to last the whole trip.

The five generation family farm produces enough food to provide CSA shares for many families in the North Fork Valley - Member Review from Smarreel
What are some of your favorite stories with Harvest Hosts Members?
Most of the stories start with: I remember when...My grandparent's had a farm and we visited or when I was a child I lived on a farm. I love helping people connect with those favorite childhood memories.
What is your favorite part about being a Host on our network?
The friendly people who come to visit our farm. The members are very generous with their purchases.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience or say to Members?
The members also love the peace and quiet here on the farm. No traffic noise just birds, cows, and roosters.
AN UNFORGETTABLE RV ADVENTURE WITH CRUISE AMERICA
By: Carrie PriceEmbarking on a Colorado road trip with Cruise America set the stage for our mesmerizing trip filled with unique experiences and hidden gems. As former fulltime RVers, the allure of the open road was irresistible, and Cruise America provided the perfect opportunity for us to rediscover the magic Our journey through the enchanting landscapes of Colorado became a testament to the freedom and comfort an RV offers.
Venturing off the beaten path, Harvest Hosts offered us unique camping experiences that became the highlight of our trip. We explored a host called Mountain View Winery in Olathe They are nestled among pear and peach orchards and the winery offered not only a scenic spot but also fun stories from the owner and a delightful wine-tasting session.
In Montrose, we were surprised by an unexpected find that taught us that Harvest Hosts can cater to diverse needs beyond traditional camping. We stayed at a co-working haven called Alt Space Coworking We found it to be a productive environment for work calls and meetings, perfect for any RVer working on the road looking for a change in scenery.
Next on our agenda was visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, but securing a campsite can be challenging at any National Park. We used CampScanner to help us secure our beautiful campsite. A few days after setting up the scan, we received a text alert notifying us of an available campsite, with the booking link conveniently provided, making our stay at this highly desirable location a breeze.
Jellystone Park at Larkspur was the last stop of our journey, where CampersCard played a pivotal role. This discount and perks program transformed our stay into a harmonious blend of luxury and affordability. From pools to fire pits, the amenities at Jellystone Park were even more enjoyable with the added benefit of a CampersCard membership, providing us with a significant discount and allowing us to relish the resort's luxury at an affordable price.
Our Colorado road trip would not have been possible without the help of Cruise America, Harvest Hosts, CampScanner, and CampersCard. These platforms showcased the enriching power of combining multiple products to enhance the RV experience Sipping wine amidst orchards, working productively at unique locations, and securing coveted campsites became seamless, leaving an indelible mark on our journey. Through exploration, local support, and savvy planning, our adventure reminded us that the open road is not just a route but a gateway to discovering the heart and soul of America.

You may already know RV power couple Marc and Julie Bennett from their wildly successful blog RV Love, their RV training courses called RV Success School, or their books Living the RV Life: Your Ultimate Guide to Life on the Road and RV Hacks: 400+ Ways to Make Life on the Road Easier Safer, and More Fun. We had the chance to sit down with them to learn their RVing origin story and their rise to success as RV educators, plus get a few nuggets of RV wisdom
Long before Marc and Julie began RVing, they each found their passion and interest in travel, which ultimately led them to each other Way back in the early 2000s, Marc managed a health and fitness contest for Body-for-LIFE, which allowed him to travel the country on a luxury Prevost tour bus. This was Marc’s first long-term RV road trip and he was pleasantly surprised by how much he loved traveling in a Class A motorcoach compared to other ways of travel.
Julie fell in love with the Rocky Mountains when visiting Boulder, Colorado in 2008 for a work conference. When the economy crashed, she decided to shut down her business and sell everything she owned, leaving her home in Sydney, Australia to restart her life in Boulder. Shortly after that, Marc and Julie met each other and fell in love.
One night in 2011, they were out at a restaurant eating pizza and by chance, met a full-time RVer couple After a detailed conversation with them, Marc and Julie became seriously interested in trying the RV lifestyle for themselves
They already loved spending every second together and they thought it would be a great way to bring their dog along on their adventures Especially with such limited vacation time offered by most companies in America, RVing is one way to travel more when you have limited time off
The idea of RV life sat in the back of their heads until they revisited the idea two years later and decided to give it a shot! As Marc and Julie describe it, “We were just feeling ready to level up our life, you know change up our life and to start making some actual steps toward making that dream a reality ” And in June 2014, they sold their house, bought an RV, and began the adventure of a lifetime
To become comfortable when they first started, they did a lot of intensive research to help them find their footing Julie and Marc started documenting their experiences even before they got on the road They quickly learned that you don’t have to be an expert to have stories and lessons that people resonate with As Julie and Marc always say, “There’s no one right way to RV ” Everyone sharing their stories and experiences is the best way for RVers to get the hang of things and find what works best for them
If you ’ re thinking of documenting your experiences on the road, you don’t need to wait until you have a flashy rig or a ton of experience under your belt Where you ’ re at right now is still important to document
Their skill sets and work experiences also lent a hand in their success as they both had careers helping people transform their lives in positive ways
Julie was a life coach focused on personal and spiritual growth, and Marc used to work as a health and wellness coach Plus, Julie owned her own marketing and events business back in Australia, promoting international authors
All of these factors helped them create content that resonated with people It also helped them realize what educational content was missing from the online RVer community–an online course and detailed resources for beginners–which inspired them to create their RV Success School later on. For the first two or three years, their blog and YouTube channel were just a side project. But as their following grew and as they had more lived experience in the RV, they decided to expand RVLove, and by 2017, both were working on it full-time.
“You don’t need to know everything to be an expert. You just need to know more than the person coming up behind you.”Julie Bennett
In their first three and a half years of RVing, they lived and worked full-time in their RV and traveled in it to 48 states RV travel always stayed fresh and exciting, and they also did a few non-RV trips to give them short breaks from the RV They flew to Hawaii and cruised to Alaska so they could check all 50 states off their travel bucket list!
Their key takeaway from traveling in an RV for so long is that some of the favorite and best places they’ve been weren’t bucket list destinations, they were places they just so happened to stop at on the road In the next six years, they changed RVs a few times, went on a few international trips and other cruises without their RV, and had countless adventures Even after 9 years in an RV, they still have plenty of places left on their bucket list to explore– mainly visiting Canadian national parks, a few more national parks in the US, and they’d love to motorhome through the UK and Europe!
After years on the road and years of running RV Love, they’ve heard every mistake under the sun and learned so much about RVing through trial and error - theirs and others One of the key lessons they’ve learned is that no matter how confident you feel, never ignore proper safety procedures or push yourself past your limits
Recently, Marc and Julie have seen a few experienced RVer friends have significant RV accidents due to rookie mistakes Remember to always have someone spot your turns when towing a long trailer like a fifth wheel to avoid tail swing accidents And when you ’ re tired, stop driving! Driving an RV can be dangerous when you ’ re not 100% alert - and it’s easier to make mistakes when you ’ re fatigued after a long drive day
Marc and Julie even underwent a recent snafu themselves They had planned to switch from motorhome travel to a truck and trailer. They found a 5th wheel trailer they loved from a seller in Northern California and made plans to meet halfway in Reno, NV to complete the sale.
They always encourage others to do their due diligence before buying an RV, but no matter how much research you do, things can still go wrong. Right before the sale, the landing gear and a part of the awning had broken. This pushed the sale back a few days, and it was a good thing it did, it led to them all to avoid driving through Tropical Storm Hillary.
With the repairs and tropical storm Hillary behind them, they proceeded with the sale and drove the truck To Reno, figuring nothing else bad could happen. And boy, were they wrong. Marc and Julie wanted to meet at an RV campground for an easy exchange, but the seller preferred they meet at his hotel. They checked the satellite view of the parking lot and all seemed well, but Marc and Julie had a sense that this was a bad plan. Instead of causing any drama, they agreed to the seller’s plan and ignored their instincts. In the morning, they woke up to the news that the seller had driven the 12-ft high trailer under a 9-foot tall clearance to get closer to the hotel entrance, and completely totaled the RV. The sale was canceled, their deposit refunded, and Marc and Julie pledged to always trust their instincts from then on out. For more details on their RV purchase gone wrong, check out their story on their blog.
Don’t let these horror stories scare you away from trying out the RV lifestyle. RVing isn’t all doom and gloom and by being prepared and following proper safety protocol, you can avoid most major accidents and RV issues. There are so many great resources out there to help you plan your route based on your RV’s clearance height, like RV Trip Wizard, which will help you avoid making the seller’s mistake.
But Julie and Marc’s biggest advice? “Get the smallest RV you could comfortably fit in. The smaller the RV, the greater travel flexibility you have, the more route options you have, and the more choices you have of places to stay The backroads are cheaper (no tolls) and you can often find cool out-of-thebox places there! With a smaller rig, you also have more options of places you can stay through Harvest Hosts ”
Marc and Julie Bennett of RVLove are authors and adventurers who have lived, lived, worked, and traveled in almost every kind of RV since 2014 They have visited all 50 USA states, plus Canada and Mexico, and share their experience at http://www.RVLove.com.
They co-authored two bestselling books: “Living the RV Life: Your Ultimate Guide to Life on the Road” and “RV Hacks: 400+ Ways to Make Life on the Road Easier, Safer, and More Fun!” (published by Simon and Schuster, with over 1,000 reviews) Plus they run online courses at RVSuccessSchool com teaching others how to buy an RV, save money, and avoid costly mistakes, while preparing for life on the road.

Two decades spent in the corporate world left Robin Barrett with a yearning for something more meaningful The routine of a stable yet unfulfilling job was a stark contrast to her true passions: writing and painting Under the weight of corporate America, she never wrote her novel on the side like she’d always planned to do Despite the security of a regular paycheck and benefits, Robin's creative spirit was stifled
The turning point came during an emotionally charged moment with her sister. Robin’s sister set out to escape the corporate world by going to grad school to find a new passion. Shortly after finishing her degree, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had about 6 months to live. Robin cared for her in her final weeks, and this tragic time inspired her to make a change. Robin’s sister asked a thought-provoking question that ultimately set up her path to leave the corporate world behind.
Immediately Robin knew she needed to make a change. Robin’s sister also told her she always saw her with a sketchbook in Paris. This set her on a profound introspection, leading Robin to realize that life's true value lies beyond the confines of conventional success and searching for what to do next.
Robin began planning for her future that day. Six months later, she was able to quit her corporate job and work part-time as a consultant for two years, working on fiction books on the side, and saving up to buy an RV. Eventually, she was able to buy her own RV to start her life on the road. She had never RVed or even camped before, but somehow she knew this is exactly what she needed. Robin's choice of a nomadic life wasn't just about escaping the corporate grind; it was a deeper quest for authenticity and living on her terms. And six years later, she still swears this was the best decision she ever made.
Robin emphasizes the importance of choosing life over mere existence Her story is a reminder that security and stability can be redefined and that fear of the unknown should not overshadow the fear of an unlived life This message resonates with many who find themselves at crossroads, contemplating a leap into the unknown As Robin says, “It's scarier to die not having lived a full life than it is to try something new “
One of the most common obstacles many people have to becoming a full-time RVer or even parttime RVer is finding a way to make money while on the road With the large increase in remote jobs, this is more accessible than ever: there are so many more types of remote jobs out there than you could ever expect Her book “Work From Home While You Roam” is the ultimate resource guide for those looking to make money remotely The book provides actual job recommendations and links for where to apply! Hopefully, with a resource like this, people who want to live the digital nomad life have one less barrier to entry to the life of their dreams! The updated version for 2024 is coming out in December 2023

Robin's journey, punctuated by her insights on remote working, health insurance, and living a fulfilling life, makes her a beacon for those yearning to break free from societal norms Robin Barrett's story is more than just a tale of transition from corporate life to van life; it's about the courage to redefine success on one ' s own terms It's a narrative that inspires and challenges, reminding us that life is a canvas awaiting our unique brushstrokes Find Robin at creativityrv com or on Instagram and YouTube at @creativityRV
In an episode of Roads and Stays audio magazine, we spoke with Ken and Anne Davis, Boondockers Welcome Hosts who have opened their doors and hearts to travelers from all over the world While we ’ ve previously spoken to full-time travelers and RV enthusiasts, today, we get a unique perspective from those who host RVers
Ken and Anne Davis became Boondockers Welcome Hosts in 2017 and have since hosted an impressive 241 guests. Their journey into hosting began after years of experience in the medical field. Ken embarked on a nursing career at the age of 54, while Anne had been a nurse since 1975.
Transitioning from their medical careers, Ken and Anne embraced retirement in 2014 and embarked on a new adventure traveling across North America in their RV for five to six months each year. During winters in Georgia, they opened their property to fellow travelers, sharing their passion for the open road.
When asked about their favorite travel destinations, Ken and Anne had difficulty choosing just one. However, two places stood out above the rest. First is the awe-inspiring Yellowstone Plateau region, encompassing Yellowstone, Moab, Angels Landing, Zion, and Bryce Canyon. The stunning landscapes and unique natural beauty of this area captivated their hearts.
The second cherished destination for Ken and Anne is the Maritimes in Canada, including Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. They found the warm hospitality of the people and rich culture in this region unforgettable.
Their journey into hosting with Boondockers Welcome began when they were planning a trip to witness a solar eclipse seven years ago. Traditional campgrounds were charging exorbitant fees due to the eclipse, prompting Ken to search for alternative options. He stumbled upon Boondockers Welcome and was immediately intrigued.
Their first hosting experience happened serendipitously. They met a couple in Blackfoot, Idaho, who were experienced Boondockers Welcome hosts. The couple welcomed Ken and Anne with open arms, sparking an incredible friendship.
Ken and Anne find immense joy in hosting and meeting people from around the world They believe that sharing their love for travel and creating a sense of community among travelers is the most rewarding aspect of being hosts They emphasize the importance of trying hosting for oneself and setting personal rules to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience
Ken and Anne Davis embody the spirit of Boondockers Welcome, where hosting becomes an opportunity to connect with fellow travelers and make lasting friendships Their story reminds us that hospitality can offer solace, joy, and a sense of belonging to those on the road Whether you ’ re considering becoming a Host or a traveler, their story serves as an inspiring example of the remarkable connections that can be formed through the world of RV travel

Join us, the Camillacis, a small, tight-knit unit comprising my wife Charlotte, and myself, Dominic. Our unit on wheels mirrors our compact family just enough space for us to work….but primarily designed for play as we traverse the country, pausing at various stops along the way! Our mode of travel? A 2011 Toyota Tundra hauling a Hallmark pop-up truck camper. Our expedition embarks from our home in Colorado Springs, the starting point for our journey. An opportunity presents itself for an extended stay at my family home in Rochester, NY, where I spent my formative years. With Rochester serving as our destination, we seize the chance to explore the East Coast and reconnect with family during the Thanksgiving holiday before our journey back to Colorado.
As the dog days of summer yield to autumn and early winter, Mother Nature guides our approach to optimizing RV travel through varying seasons. While many opt for the southbound escape to warmer climates like Arizona or Florida, our journey from Colorado to New York charts a course through the northern states.
Continue on to discover our pivotal stops, our experiences in each locale, and seasonal tips that shaped our adventure!
Preparation is vital, enabling us to maximize enjoyment and make wise, safe choices throughout our journey. We count ourselves fortunate for the various route options available to us along multiple major interstates. Just a few hundred miles to the north or south can significantly alter both the weather and the regional landscape, encompassing mountains, lakes, deserts, plains, and oceans. Opting for the northern route along the Great Lakes for our Summer journey was deliberate. This choice granted us access to pristine beaches and an array of recreational opportunities to relish while the weather remained favorable. Additionally, considering our rig's lack of AC, moderate temperatures prove especially pleasant for a restful night's sleep.
Colorado to New York. 8/31.
Upon completing our preparations for the next few months, we set our sights on an Eastern route Typically, we avoid driving for more than 10 to 11 hours in a single day Covering a 10-hour stretch from Colorado Springs, our journey led us to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where we spent the night at the delightful Harvest Host destination, "Living History Farms " Its convenient location just off I-70 makes it an ideal spot for a brief stopover Following a swift 6-hour drive from Cedar Rapids, we found ourselves in St Joseph, Michigan
In the southwestern corner of Lake Michigan lies a quaint haven seemingly frozen in the charm of the early 1900s. Eager to savor the last drops of Summer, our first stop was the beach! This area boasts numerous hidden beaches adorned with white sand and impeccably clear water….Life unsalted is truly a gem!
We divided our time between camping at Harvest Hosts and "Warren Dunes State Park," right along the gorgeous Eastern shores of Lake Michigan These dunes? Absolutely breathtaking with stunning sunsets and beautiful high grasses! Running down the dunes is something everyone must experience!
One standout accommodation was a Harvest Host destination named "Haymarket Brewing " It offered not only fantastic food, an inviting atmosphere, and great beer but also a camping experience worth cherishing Nestled behind the establishment, a vast area adorned with old-growth trees welcomed members to drive anywhere on the grass to park their vehicles for camping a liberating and enjoyable aspect of our stay
Our journey led us to a final stop before tracing the shores of Lake Erie toward our ultimate destination, Rochester, NY. As you can probably guess? It was another Harvest Host! This time, it was all about the experience at "Capri Drive-In" in Coldwater, Michigan. Picture this: cruising through farms, cornfields, and apple orchards to reach it almost like living in our own movie! This stop embodied pure Americana!
As Summer in the lower 48 bids farewell to the warmth and blooms of summer, the impending shift to autumn signals the approaching grasp of winter Mother Nature's last burst of colorful foliage serves as a harbinger of changing tones Optimism gives way to concerns as temperatures drop, snow forecasts loom, and icy roads become a looming reality
When planning for winter travel, safety takes precedence as we prepare our rig for colder temperatures. Our basic setup requires winterization draining the water tank and water lines. Checking our gear becomes pivotal; we ensure snow-rated tires, updated windshield wipers, cold weather washer fluid, and verify the condition of our propane and camper furnace. We also travel with a mini backup heater and we love our Big Agnes down blanket to provide additional warmth at night! While driving we keep our cold weather gear close at hand in the cab, ready for quick access during gas fill-ups or impromptu explorations.
When planning our return trip to Colorado, we opted for a more southern route Even within cold weather states, shifting a few hundred miles south can significantly alter weather conditions Equipped with an emergency kit, we stay vigilant, monitoring weather forecasts and road conditions Safely navigating winter conditions is crucial to avoid icy roads while being prepared for unforeseen weather changes Winter travel, though challenging, brings remarkable experiences with adequate preparation and precautions plus, the best part? No bugs splattered on the windshield!
We always ensure to inject some fun into our journey. Following a visit to family in Erie, PA, and a stopover at a Harvest Host in Indianapolis, our path led us to explore Kansas City. During the colder months, we often lean towards city exploration for its plethora of indoor activities and fewer crowds at popular spots.
Our day kicked off at a trendy Hawaiianthemed coffee shop downtown. Next, we drove to the WWI memorial, little did we know, the WWI monument offered a breathtaking vista, perched atop a hill, providing an amazing panoramic view of the city below! Descending, we ventured to Kansas City Union Station to revel in its holiday displays.
Then, a scheduled tour awaited us at J Rieger and Co , a distillery steeped in Kansas City's history Once the largest mailorder whiskey company in 1887, they faced downfall during the prohibition in 1919 Fast forward to 2012, the heir to the Reiger family revitalized the brand in the same historic building
Of course, no trip to KC is complete without indulging in BBQ. After extensive research, we settled on Joe’s Kansas City BBQ for an authentic experience. Renowned for their burnt ends and the iconic Z-man sandwich, this institution operates out of a gas station, adding to the charm of it all!
Following our stop in KC, we embarked on our final day on the road an eight-hour drive through the plains of Kansas and Eastern Colorado. As we neared Colorado Springs, about an hour outside, the majestic sight of Pikes Peak, one of Colorado's iconic 14ers, emerged seemingly out of nowhere, warmly welcoming us back home at the conclusion of our successful journey!

The winter months are harsh on your RV, and its systems need a wake-up call before hitting the road again Skipping this step could lead to serious consequences Imagine turning on the faucet only to have antifreeze spew out, or worse, experiencing a cracked water line due to frozen water By diligently following our dewinterizing steps, you'll avoid costly repairs and ensure a safe and comfortable journey
Before tackling dewinterization, gather all the necessary tools and supplies to avoid delays and frustrations. Here's a handy checklist:
Essential tools: Adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, bucket or container, funnel, gloves, and safety glasses.
Cleaning agents: RV-safe water system cleaner and bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons of water).
Squeegee
Long-handled car wash brush the MATCC 62 Car Wash Brush is a favorite.
Optional items: Paper towels, cleaning rags, RV wax and polish.
Rushing the process before the weather warms up can lead to freezing temperatures damaging your RV's plumbing system. The ideal time to dewinterize depends on your location and climate. Aim for a consistent stretch of warm weather above freezing, typically around mid-spring.
Winter can be tough on an RV exterior. Inspection and cleaning of the roof, skin, windows, and tires should be part of your dewinterization process.
Check roof for:
Torn or damaged membranes
Proper sealant around vents, antennas, and other roof penetrations
Signs of leaks or water damage
Inspect siding and seals for:
Faded, cracked, or peeling paint or sealant
Gaps or tears in the caulking around windows, doors, and other openings
Loose or missing screws or rivets
Signs of water damage
Check awnings and slide-outs for:
Tears, rips, or holes in the fabric
Smooth operation and deployment
Presence of mildew or mold
Inspect tires for:
Proper inflation (check the owner ' s manual for recommended pressure)
Signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, bulges, or uneven tread wear
Tire age (tires should be replaced every 5-7 years, regardless of tread depth)
Wash and wax the exterior:
Use a mild RV-specific soap and water.
Apply a coat of wax to protect the paint and sealant.
Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Star Brite 71500 RV Wash & Wax is a popular 2-in-1 product.
Winter storage can leave musty odors and potentially harmful mold or mildew growth. Opening windows and doors allows fresh air to circulate, Cleaning and dusting removes dust and allergens accumulated during storage.
Complete a thorough inspection of your RV’s interior. Leaks from winterized plumbing or melting snow can lead to water damage and costly repairs. Testing all faucets and appliances ensures their functionality and helps identify potential issues before they cause significant damage.
Inspect for signs of pest infestation. Mice and other rodents often seek shelter in RVs during winter. Pack rats are a serious problem in dry climates. They love to chew wiring and insulation. If you didn’t set traps when you winterized the RV, set them now.
Most seasoned campers recommend taking care of RV spring cleaning at the same time you dewinterize. Recruit your partner or the kids to help out and make it a fun weekend project.
Winter may have left its icy mark on your RV's plumbing system This section will guide you through the process of flushing the water lines and freshening up the holding tanks
Before you begin, consider how you winterized your water heater If you bypassed it and didn't fill it with antifreeze, you can inspect the anode rod and remove drain caps before flushing However, if the water heater contains antifreeze, save the inspection for afterwards
Before you do anything with water, close the black and gray water tank valves You don’t want any surprises Next, determine your flush strategy If you have a city water hook-up available, it simplifies the process You can remove the winterizing kit (if installed) on the pump before or after the flush If you use the freshwater tank, you’ll need to remove the kit before filling it or using the pump
City Water Connection:
Connect your RV to the city water source
Open all faucets (hot and cold) simultaneously, including the outside shower
Turn on the fresh water source.
Hold down the toilet flush pedal until the water runs clear
Freshwater Tank:
Fill the freshwater tank with water
Turn on the pump and open all faucets (hot and cold) throughout the RV, including any outdoor shower.
Hold down the toilet flush pedal until the water runs clear
Once the water runs clear, close all faucets
Disconnect from the city water source if used.
If you used the pump, fill the tank with fresh water
Fill the freshwater tank with a solution of 1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons of water
Pump the solution through the entire system until you smell bleach at each faucet
Let it sit for several hours, then flush thoroughly with clean water
Install a new water filter for fresh, clean drinking and cooking water
Check for leaks at all connections.
Congratulations! You've successfully flushed and prepared your RV's water system for travel Don’t forget to add a holding tank treatment to keep the gray and black water tanks smelling fresh We love Unique Digest-It!
Just as winter's chill affects the plumbing, it can also impact your RV's electrical system
For a seamless transition to warmer months, follow these steps to ensure your electrical system operates safely and efficiently
Turn on the main breaker
Check all electrical outlets and fixtures for proper function
Charge RV house batteries and test them for proper voltage.
Turn on and test all appliances
Replace any air filters.
Finally, check and test fire extinguishers Don’t forget to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries as needed If it’s time to replace these safety items, we suggestt Kidde plug-in alarms with Smart features
The propane system is the heart of your RV. Unless you store your RV in temperatures lower than -44 degrees Farenheit, you won’t need to worry about frozen lines, but that doesn’t mean you can skip dewinterizing.
Switch off all propane appliances.
Make sure no open flames or sparks exist near your RV while working with the propane system.
Turn on your leak detector and listen for any telltale sounds that might indicate a leak
Open the valve on your propane tank fully Sniff for any leaks coming from the valve or regulator
Soap Bubble Test
Apply a soapy water solution generously to the valve and regulator. Look for bubbling or spurting.
Rodent Patrol
Examine wires and hoses for signs of rodent damage.
Clean and Clear:
Give your propane appliances a thorough cleaning to remove any dust or debris accumulated during winter storage
Test the Spark
Light each appliance to make sure you have proper ignition
Once all propane appliances are functioning correctly, confirm that they operate flawlessly in their gas mode After testing the refrigerator in gas mode, turn it off and leave the doors open This allows it to reach room temperature before transitioning to its electric mode for further testing
If you suspect a leak, act swiftly Immediately turn off the propane supply Don't hesitate to seek assistance from a certified RV service technician for inspection and repairs
Tackling spring cleaning alongside dewinterization offers double the benefits. Not only will you revitalize your RV's systems, but you'll also refresh its interior, which means one less project to complete before you hit the road.
Floors: Vacuum and wash floors thoroughly Don't forget to vacuum under furniture
Upholstery: Vacuum or steam clean upholstery and carpets Treat any stains with a suitable cleaner
Cabinets and Drawers: Empty, clean, and organize cabinets and drawers. Discard anything expired or no longer needed
Windows and Screens: Wash windows inside and out. Remove and clean window screens
Kitchen: Clean appliances, countertops, sink, and cabinets.
Bathroom: Clean and disinfect the toilet, sink, shower, and bathtub. Check for leaks and replace any worn-out caulking
Linens and Bedding: Wash all bedding, towels, and curtains. Replace any worn-out or damaged items
You don’t need a lot of fancy cleaning supplies for interior spring cleaning. Baking soda, vinegar, and a gentle detergent make a great cleaning trio.
Dewinterizing and spring cleaning may seem like tedious tasks, but if you Invest the time and effort now, all you’ll need to do for the first trip of the season is load up the RV and drive. Plus, a clean RV just runs better. So grab your cleaning supplies, put on some tunes, and channel your inner Marie Kondo - your RV will thank you!
