Information about Harvard graduating seniors and alumni/ae applying to medical school is taken from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Advisor Information System, 2005–2021, and the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service, Health Profession Advisors' Report, 2021.

Medical school applicants are asked on the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application whether they authorize AMCAS to release information about their application, including MCAT scores, to their college’s health professions adviser. Individual data within this report represents those applicants who selected “yes” to this question.

National admissions statistics information is taken from the AAMC FACTS website (www.aamc.org/data/facts/).

The sources of the data are the AAMC Data Warehouse: Applicant Matriculant File (DW:AMF) and the AAMC Student Records System (SRS).

Introduction

Dear Members of the Harvard Community,

We are pleased to present the Medical School Data Report for Harvard College seniors and alumni/ae who applied for 2021 matriculation. As described in this report, Harvard College seniors and alumni/ae continue to perform well in the medical school application process, with an acceptance rate far exceeding the national average.

A large majority of Harvard applicants to medical school were alumni/ae rather than seniors, continuing a trend that began in 1999. These alumni/ae applicants were accepted with lower grade point averages (GPA) than accepted seniors and applicants nationally.

Although the focus of this report is on measures such as GPA and MCAT scores, some applicants with very high MCAT scores or GPAs were not admitted to any medical school and many with lower scores were admitted. Admission decisions are not based solely on individual MCAT and GPA scores. For example, an upward trend in grades over time is not captured by a single GPA. Medical school admissions committees consider personal qualities, experience, and motivation of the applicant. To this end they review, to varying degrees, the applicant’s personal statement, letters of evaluation, interview, rigor of academic courses, research experience, community service, medically related experience, potential for service to underserved communities, timing of application, and U.S. and state residency status.

The information in this report should not be interpreted as being predictive of the outcome of an individual application. We strongly encourage Harvard students and alumni/ae to consult with their House premedical tutors and premedical advisers at the Office of Career Services.

Please contact us if you would like more information.

I. Application Data

National Applicants

The number of applicants to medical school nationwide declined from 1998 through 2002, but has risen since then. The number of Harvard applicants remained fairly steady from 2000 to 2014. For the past seven application cycles, there has been a decline in the number of Harvard applicants.

Since 1999, the majority of Harvard applicants to medical school have been alumni/ae rather than seniors. These alumni/ae applicants form a heterogeneous group that includes individuals who: a) elected to apply a year or more after graduation, b) were not accepted previously, or c) decided after graduation to pursue a medical career and took their premedical courses as post-baccalaureate students.

Individual Medical School Acceptance Data, 2007–2021

The following charts show, for each medical school, the MCAT averages and GPAs for accepted Harvard applicants (both seniors and alumni/ae) during the period from 2007 to 2021. For confidentiality, individual data points are not shown for schools with five or fewer data points. The national median science and overall GPA data are for all applicants accepted to each respective medical school for matriculation in 2021.

Medical school applicants are asked on the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application whether they authorize AMCAS to release information about their application, including MCAT scores, to their college’s health professions adviser. Individual data within this report represents those applicants who selected “yes” to this question.

As shown in the data to the left of each medical school chart, Harvard applicants were accepted with a lower science and overall GPA than national applicants at all but four medical schools.
