MATERIAL Research and organizational methods for the Material Lab for Parsons The New School for Design Independent Study, Spring 2015

GOALS

Developing a mapping of materials through application, properties and characteristics. This map is used as a tool to understand where particular materials fall and where material categories overlap.

Standardizing the organization Integrating material understanding with the current curriculum A manual that lays out the language and standards to create a system for organizing the Materials Lab. This manual aims to be a visualization of the eventual online database.

Defining the terms and categories in the system will bring clarity and create connections between the materials to make the Material Lab not just a lending library but a place of learning and discovery.

Consistency in the layout, colors and graphic in the Lab with make it that much more efficient and easy to use and explain.

MATERIAL APPLICATION PROCESS The new system must address these three categories and their connections. This will ensure all disciplines see the pathways between them.

Architects may look at the application, then material Interior designers may see materials then application and process Product designers want to know about the process, then material and application In order to make the conversation easier, the vocabulary must become universal.
