When one begins to put words together about the City of Hartselle, the first step is deciding where to begin. When you have lived in the same town for your entire life, it is at times difficult to share with others the great number of things that make Hartselle the wonderful place it has, is and continues to be. I always have the tendency to go back and use the example of Hartselle is a place where folks address, or as we in the South say, speak to you on the sidewalk. We will still hold doors open for you if we are entering or exiting a building. Even if we do not know you, most of the folks who call Hartselle home will share their smile and welcome when meeting someone in the grocery isle or in line at one of the stores here in the city. Hartselle uses the phrase ‘City of Southern Hospitality’ and even into the 21st century I believe that phrase is still prevalent and true of most folks that call Hartselle home. “How are y’all doing?” is a phrase that many will address you with when running into someone, not with your car, but as you are out and about in most areas of Hartselle. Hospitality is defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors or even strangers. Added to that definition, being southern means we probably may go a little overboard in welcoming folks. I think here in the South many believe and live by the golden rule to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Hartselle was founded in 1870 and named after George Hartsell. After 150 years the city is still home to many generations of folks who have called Hartselle home. Today however, Hartselle is now home to many who have recently moved in or planning to move here and settle. In fact, the city is currently experiencing one of the largest growth spurts ever in new housing construction. There are currently more than 600 possible building lots that will become home to many who are choosing to move to Hartselle. There are many reason folks choose to stay in Hartselle, move back after college or other training, or make the transition to Hartselle. At the top of the list is the quality of life that is available here. Hartselle City Schools is a jewel in the crown of Hartselle. Award winning, highly achieving academically and ranked in the top 10 to 15 schools in the state, year after year. Just this year Hartselle was the only high school in Morgan County to increase ACT scores and one of two in the state to hold in session instruction during the 202021 school year. Academies that prepare each student for college or careers, including vocational training is top tier for the administration, teachers and staff. Talented sports teams also have Hartselle known as a contender in the entire state. With a low crime rate, folks feel the safety that is offered in Hartselle. They show this by the support and recognition of our police and fire departments. Ranked in the top 10 safest cities in the state, encourages folks to choose Hartselle to live, work and raise their families. Hartselle also offers recreation facilities not seen in many cities our size. An Olympic size pool at the Aquatic Center, along with a splash pad, is used frequently in the summer months. Well maintained athletic fields for baseball, football, soccer, and softball, for all ages are also a sought-after commodity for those who call our city home. Downtown Hartselle is also still a draw for those who live here or come to visit. With shops, restaurants, and other amenities, many are drawn to this area as well. Continued improvements to the downtown area are planned to encourage more folks to visit this area and spend time there. Hartselle is also a very strong faith-based community. Home to most denominations and several non-denominational churches, each seeking to share the gospel and support the community. Hartselle is proud to be a city that still offers the small-town community feeling, where folks speak to you on the streets and are always willing to help when needs arise, while offering the services that the citizens have come to expect and deserve. Hartselle experiences primarily mild and pleasant weather all year. Four months, December through March, account for about 43 percent of the normal annual precipitation. Severely cold weather seldom occurs. In the transition from winter to spring, appearances of warm moist air in place of the cold air become more frequent, and the greatest variety of weather usually occurs during this season. The purpose of the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce
is to promote the economic and social well-being of the people of the Hartselle area. The Hartselle Chamber of Commerce began serving the business community on a volunteer basis in 1946 and on May 11, 1976, the chamber became a corporation. A chamber of commerce is a membership organization
that advocates on behalf of local businesses. It is backed by a board that is comprised of businesspeople from the local community. The chamber is a resource, advocate, and connector for business. It is not a government entity, although it does work with local elected leaders to help create a positive business environment. The fundamental mission of the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce is to build our community
through business, ensuring the socioeconomic vitality of the Hartselle area. To get connected with Hartselle Utilities service, a rental lease or a house purchase agreement must be presented to transfer utilities to the new customer. Barley is a 2001 graduate from Athens State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in public safety administration. Academy Session 235 and is also a Certified Police Chief through the University Partnership for Alabama Continuing Education. The department is made up of 29 full time and five part time officers, one code enforcement officer and four School Protection officers. There is a patrol division, criminal investigations division and two full-time School Resource Officers who help make up the department. In 2020 the HPD responded to 15,704 calls for service.

Hartselle Fire & Rescue

Hartselle Fire & Rescue is a combination fire department, consisting of 20 firefighters, 15 volunteers and is an ALS EMSP. Hartselle Fire & Rescue has two fire stations and has an ISO 4 Class fire rating. Hartselle Fire & Rescue responds to all fires, MVA, emergency medical calls, HAZMAT and other incidents within the incorporated city limits of Hartselle. The Fire Department is constantly training its own personnel and also conducts various Alabama Fire College classes that are open to outside agencies. Other programs off ered by Hartselle Fire & Rescue include fi re preven-tion and safety training programs as well as giving “burn notifi cations” for open burning. HARTSELLE FIRE & RESCUE MISSION STATEMENT As a team of highly trained and dedicated professionals, it is our mission to provide the highest standard of service to all those who may call upon us for help. Hartselle City Schools was established in 1975 and quickly became a sought-after district of educational excellence. Hartselle City Schools is dedicated to equipping students to meet the 21st-century global opportunities and challenges with confidence, skill, and passion. Hartselle City Schools is comprised of six campuses; three elementary, an intermediate, junior high and high school plus the Board of Education. accommodate the now-estimated 2,500 children with special needs and other children in the county. The overall objective of the project was to develop the premier special-needs playground in Alabama. Parallel goals were to provide recreational facilities and interaction opportunities for children with special needs in Morgan County and the surrounding region; and to stimulate other communities across the nation to similarly recognize and accommodate such needs. Soon after the clubs united, the City of Hartselle, Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce, Morgan County Volunteer Firemen Association, United Way of Morgan County, Volunteer Center of Morgan County and Walmart of Hartselle joined in support. The four civic clubs and these entities are recognized as SNAP Founding Partners. Compelling support emerged for this compassionate, needed and worthy project. Attendees must be at least 55 years old or attend with a spouse 60 or older. A nutritious lunch is served each day. A daily donation of $1.25 is requested for the meal. Other than joining each other for lunch, the seniors enjoy a variety of activities such as weekly signings, playing cards, working puzzles, quilting, socializing, health screenings, reading books from their library, monthly birthday parties and much more. For anyone who would like to attend but is un-

Depot Days Festival

The Depot Days Festival is Hartselle’s biggest event of the year and is always held on the third Saturday in September. In 2019 the estimated attendance was more than 19,000. The week consists of Down Memory Lane, an event celebrating the history of Hartselle, as well as a community worship service, youth Glow Night and other community events. This is a fun family event that is free and open to the public. On Saturday there is a tractor show, an antique car show and live entertainment, plus vendors, an art competition and so much more for the entire family.

William Bradford Huie Library of Hartselle

Located at 152 Sparkman St. NW, the William Bradford Huie Library of Hartselle has a collection of approximately 33,000 books, audiobooks and DVDs available for checkout to library card holders. Library cards are free to any Morgan County resident with proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, utility bill or rental agreement. There is a small one-time fee of $10 to non-residents to receive a library card. Cards are required to check-out books, audiobooks and DVDs. Cards are also required to access the library’s free e-book collection. In addition to being a lending library, William Bradford Huie Library of Hartselle also provides many services and programs to the community that do not require a library card. There are eight computers available for patron use and all are able to access the internet and print. In addition, the library has free wi-fi available both inside and in the parking lot. The library also works with Alabama Public Library Service to provide additional free educational resources including ACT test preparation, homework help and career improvement. Prints and photocopies costs 15 cents per page. The library offers scanning services to an email address or thumb drive at no cost. The William Bradford Huie Library’s staff includes one-full time assistant librarian, Alex VanKoughnett, two part-time library assistants, Sarah Laughmiller and Chrissy Tucker, and Library Manager, Michelle Jo Blaylock. The staff strives to create a welcoming atmosphere and creative programing that meets the needs of the community.
