This area comes under Hot and Dry region.

GANDHINAGAR, GUJARAT GIFT CITY

Objectives: Resist heat gain: 1. Decrease exposed surface area, this can be achieved by accurate orientation and shape of building 2. Increase thermal resistance this can be achieved by insulation of building envelope 3. Increase thermal capacity this can be achieved by means of massive structure.

4. Increase buffer space this can be achieved by having lobbies, balconies or verandas 5. Decrease air exchange rate (ventilation during day time) this can be achieved by scheduling air exchange 6. Increase shading this can be achieved by having external surfaces being protected by overhangs, fins or trees 7. Increase surface reflectivity this can be achieved by using pale colours, reflective tiles,etc.

Promote heat loss: Increase air exchange rate (ventilation during night time), this can be achieved by providing windows, exhausts, etc. by providing wind towers and strategical arrangement of openings.

Columns have a surrounding shell that allows hot air to get through the top and escape from the roof above, inducing stack effect.

WIND DIRECTION

A biomimicry of a termite mound A termite mound has pores in it and the structure as a whole is able to breathe, allowing cool air from underground to rise up through the structure, cooling the inner spaces.

At the same time the hot air from above being tackled by the cooled structure during the tenure of night time and allowing heat to pass out as well.

This picture shows the temperature difference in the underground and outer area, and how the design of the mound helps the termites to maintain the coolness within the structure.

Stack Effect: Columns have a surrounding shell that allows hot air to get through the top and escape from the roof above, causing influx of cool air at the same time from below, inducing stack effect.

Passive cooling 1. Inside the building, lower power fans pull in cool night air from outside.

2. The cool air from underground is brought to the offices , the concert absorbs the cold, insulating the building and chilling the circulating air.

3. The next morning as the temperature rises, warm air is vented up through the ceiling and released by the chimneys.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING 1. In order to keep the site cool and to have rainwater harvesting, a waterbody to be placed on the south west part of site. This shall allow wind to pass above the water body, carry moisture and provide cool breeze to the users.

CONCEPT AND ITS SUSTAINABLE APPROACH RETRACTABLE SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF

The massive ETFE sheet roof allows for natural light to be flooded inside the exhibits.

Solar panels placed above the ETFE roof shall expand when direct sunlight falls on the surface, this way maximum amount of energy shall be generated and the remaining places the panels shall contract allowing indirect light to come into the spaces below.

Required kwh: 307.42 kwh 50000 sqm approx surface area for solar panels Each solar panel area 2.32 sqm So approx 21551 solar panels 300 watts x 8 hrs x 0.75 = 1800 watt hrs (1800 x 21551) / 1000 = 38791.8 kwh

The ETFE sheet shall have textured sheets such that it shall allow the flexibility of having shaded spaces as per the need of the exhibition which can be bloated again by inducing pressure allowing natural light to enter in.

focus on FLEXIBILITY The ground level of this massive exhibition space that is of 27210 sqm is a flexible space, with retractablewalls.

A space that shall be used for recreational activities of the sorts for the masses in the city.

RETRACTABLE WALLS

The broadest surface is exposed to north direction hence getting access to maximum amount of north light.

The south, south-west side which receives harshest sunlight has service areas exposed to this side, since they shall be least used spaces in a given time and shall also act as a buffer area for heat to not reach deep inside the structure.

The prevailing wind direction that is from south west direction shall flow above the water bodies and carry the cool breeze towards the rest of the structure.

The Convention Centre should4 be able to be the benchmark for the entire world, in terms of the design success to achieve sustainability.

Should be able to serve not only its primary need of providing the exhibiting spaces to the exhibitors but also help the community around.

- The long term goal of this project shall be to attract as many people as it can and help make India one of the top countries in the MICE industry. (MICE stands for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions )

This Exhibition Centre has fixed spaces for Indian handloom industry experts to show our country's natural fabrics and our distinct Indian weaves. The polyfabric used today in the industry is the 3rd largest polluter in the world. So this structure shall have a highlighted dedicated space towards creating awareness across the users of the project.

Conclusion Since international convention and exhibition centre is a structure where the best of a countries capabilities is put on exhibit, our active stance in conserving energy and making the best use of it certainly shall show our stand across the world on our care on energy conservation and management, keeping in mind the acess to these spaces for the locals such that the site is in use throughout the year.

The methods mentioned above will suffice the energy optimization in an international convention and exhibition centre

Lighting and air conditioning are the major factors in consumption of energy. Thus conserving and generating energy on site plays a crucial role.

Energy saved can be used by not only the convention centre but by the neighbouring government bodies.
