I recently graduated from Northumbria University with a 2:1 in Design for Industry. Prior to my 4 years at Northumbria University I also spent a year at Kingston University Art Foundation studying 3D design. My degree has given me an eye for detail which I combine with the generation of innovative ideas and execution of high quality solutions over a short time period. An Interior Ambience For The Exterior
The present shift to fully utilise our outdoor areas, accelerated by the recent lockdowns, has given rise to multipurpose spaces and an expanding interest in furbishing them. As a result there is an increased need for better external lighting
Cayo is a contemporary light inspired by our new desire to fully utilise the purpose of our outdoor
spaces. Its macro scale creates an inviting oasis within the garden, transforming the often cold, dark micro climate into a warm, ambient scene.
Its design was heavily influenced by the desire for a comfortable environment regardless of the UK’s northern hemisphere climate.
I aspire my CAYO lamp to be as contemporary, sophisticated, and unique as these established brands which I admire.
CAYO’s shade gets its inspiration from a traditional pleated lamp shade in a classic mushroom empire shape. An added inner layer gives a contemporary element, whilst enhancing the lighting experience.
A macro scaled shade gives reference to a garden parasol. It wants to be noticed.
An intricate overlapping of the shade material, Cordura Canvas, contrasts with the simple form of the frame. A design to seamlessly co-exist with luxury garden furniture, the likes of Dedon and Gloster in an elegant city garden.
CAYO amalgamates a fabric shade with a stainless steel powder coated frame and a polished concrete base
forming a unique contrast of materials and textures. A lamp capable of staying outside.
Reminiscent of designer Archille Castiglioni’s Arco lamp, the curved horizontal arm keeps the shade as the centre piece whilst creating adaquate clearance for the users below. C.M.F
I produced a 1:5 scale working model in order to showcase CAYO at New Designers, Islington.
By developing scaled technical drawings I was able to accurately construct CAYO using various model making skills such as molding, textile craft and metal work.
A parts break down including tether straps 10 to secure the shade at its top most position, and a cam cleat 6 to lock and release the power cable when adjusting the shade height.

Minda gives young adults their independence whilst simultaneously reducing their carers’ worries
The Minda set informs parents of their child’s safe arrival to their destinations. Diminishing the worries of an often forgotten “I’ve arrived” text.
It builds a trusting relationship by limiting
the use of damaging tracking apps and allows the kids the freedom they need to learn and mature.
Parents spend around 37 hours a week worrying about their children and approximatively 59% of parents have lost sleep worrying about their children, with their safety being number the main concern.
‘‘Constant monitoring has shown to damage parent and teen relationships while simultaneously causing harm to the child’s development. Teens and young adults who feel like they are always being watched can develop anxiety issues and suffer from lack of confidence.’’
MINDA is a simple, noninvasive device with the aim of giving young adults their freedom whilst keeping parents happy.
MINDA’s design is simple to avoid confusion, it uses an analogue turn switch to set the journey length, and lights to indicate how long left on the timer.
The MINDA parent device is a minimal, sleek cuboid
designed to blend with modern home interiors. It uses a warm light to indicate the safe arrival of their loved one.
The dimensions are based off of a car key allowing the user to comfortably fit it in their pocket or a bag.
MINDA works via a secure LPWAN, a low-power wide-area network, to communicate with the parent device. The traveling MINDA transmits date over a long range to control the low energy consuming parent device, informing it when to light up.
To set MINDA to the time of your journey simply twist the top till the appropriate number of green lights turn on, each green light symbolises 10 minutes.
Once MINDA’s count down finishes an alarm will sound. To turn off the alarm press the top in, this will then send a notification to the parent device.
The MINDA parent device can connect to multiple travel MINDAs. Once a travel MINDA is clicked, a specific level of the home device lights up.

During the 2020 pandemic SharkNinja, a home devices and appliance company, came to Northumbria Design For Industry for an alternative vacuum cleaner tailored to the recent shift in working habits.
Brisk is a lightweight vacuum design to be used in short bursts, with an efficient emptying mechanism.
The shift to working from home has increased daily mess. Quick short cleaning bursts over the week reduces the need for a big clean up at the weekends.
Due to the pandemic Jim and Sophie are both working from home and now struggle to find time to clean since they now also have to look after their son, Sam.
They are tired from long working days at home and having Sam to worry about. The weekends are their only down time and so they don’t want to spend them cleaning up large messes.
Due to COVID, Jim and Sophie are both full time work from home parents
This kind of cleaning means that Jim and Sophie can spend more time with Sam after work and spend less time cleaning.
Sam often makes mess around the house so Jim and Sophie find they are cleaning up after him a lot.
Their Rapid Clean lives in their home with easy access for quick clean ups
Living on its charger, the Rapid Clean is always available for short and quick bursts of cleaning. after
It’s easy emptying mechanism means Jim or Sophie can quickly clear out the vacuum ready for any future mess.
After gaining insight of the common emptying problems with the majority of compact vacuum cleaners. Shaking the dust chamber to release wedged dirt, causing dust to enter back into the air and potentially miss the bin. Brisk has an engineered system allowing the user to plunge the lid, pushing the dust and dirt directly into the bin.
Brisk maintains Shark’s design language, intending to be their next generation vacuum. The use of chrome and large grill has links to current Shark models such as, Stratos Anti Hair Wrap.
Brisk’s intrinsic design gives the user the option of putting the vacuum on display, optimising living space.
A minimal wall charger gives Brisk an elegant hanging spot, ensuring it’s ready to use at any point.
Brisk’s retractable brush is simple to use and always stays attached, so you can never lose it.
