01 Labor Union Project
TASK: The task of this project is to design a union hall for a labor union encompassing cultural workers including architects, artists, and museum/school workers. The challenge of the project was to develop a hall that is singular and “self-evident” in its form, while having a clear conceptual and aesthetic agenda. Another challenge of this project was to consider structure as an integral aspect of architectural form.
SITE: Vacant lot at the southeast corner of intersection at W Randolph St and N Ogden Ave, in Chicago.

AESTHETIC AIM
The aim of this project’s aesthetic was to utilize Chicago style brick and concrete strucutres to create a contrast between the two materials, while also showcasing the industrial characteristics of both. Another aesthetic objective was to utilize exposed concrete structures within the interior as aesthetic element, that contrast against the old, non-loadbearing brick walls that’s thtere merely to either seperate spaces or for aesthetic purpose. I chose these two primary materials with the intention of using old brick walls to symbolize the historic Chicago and conrete to symbolize the modern Chicago.
The collage above is meant to show the mood of the space, and materiality that the architecture is trying to express. It is a view from the main hall of the building.

REQUIRED PROGRAMS
-Meeting Hall: 3000-6000 SF
-Entry Hall: 300-750 SF
-1-2 Small Offices: 75-150 SF
-Restrooms: 150-450 SF
PROGRAMS ARRANGEMENT
I divided the programs into three groups: the meeting hall in one group, offices and entry hall in another, and the third group consisting of bathrooms and a maintenance room. To create a large open space, I combnined the third group witth the meeting hall. I lifted 1/3 of the meeting hall to the second floor level, hiding the third group underneath it, while the meeting hall above extended to cover part of the office. In a sense, a giant brick wall seperates the building into two sections: group 1 & 3, and group 2. By doing this, the entire building becomes one large hall, consisting of an entry hall and a meeting hall.
In the plan, the entry hall is at the bottom, with three offices on the left, down the hall, there are mutiple bathrooms, and a maintance room. While on the right it is the main meeting hall, connecting to second floor, that extends over the offices.

The goal of the project is to design a small 1,500 square foot structure along the Chicago River as part of the Wild Mile. This structure is meant to be equal parts habitat and apparatus as a tool for living, studying, researching, making, and exploring. While bearing in mind the characters/clients that are at stake, and I got to choose a specific resident to occupy my structure.

SITE: 1346 N Kingsbury St Chicago, IL 60642
INHABITANT: Chicago metropolitan water reclamation researchers & water from the Chicago River.

PROJECT MAIN IDEA & DESIGN STRATEGY
I chose the Metro Water Reclamation Researchers as my clients and aimed to reflect their work in the architecture. The main idea was to use water as a design element and let it flow through the building. I used a grid system for consistency and efficiency, and a scaffolding structure to minimize the footprint and integrate water into the architecture.

Required Programs
700 sf - Private Living, 500 sf - Semi Private Exploration, 300 sf - Public Space

Program Layout
The plan for this building involves arranging the living, semi-public, and public spaces on the top floor, which is at ground level. One floor below, the main research spaces are located, equipped with a scaffolding system to store advanced water reclamation equipment. The bottom floor is where the water is integrated into the architecture. It can be contained in various capsules for scientific research and studies, or allowed to flow freely throughout the building.
Plan on the left is from the top/ground floor.
Section above is from the short side. Showing scafolding, and capsule system for water reclamation research.
