11 SPACE SAVING IDEAS FOR YOUR HOME

Maximize every inch of your home without sacrificing style. Bring both function and flair to small living.

Stylish strategies will help you maximize space in even the smallest of rooms

10STYLISH SPACE SAVING IDEAS

You’ll want to try at home.

In a world where living space is becoming increasingly expensive and coveted, creative solutions for stylish space-saving ideas in small apartments are more in demand than ever. Whether we are talking about dorm rooms, small apartments, or cozy mini-lofts, efficiently using limited space can make the difference between a chaotic home and an inviting one.

The good news is that there are a number of ingenious tips and tricks that can help you make the most of every square inch of space, stylishly.

Multifunctional furniture, in particular, can be especially helpful. Beds with integrated storage or dining tables that can be folded up and stored when they aren’t being used are practical, and often attractive, solutions. You’ll also want to think vertically—installing shelves up to your ceiling will allow you to use space that might otherwise be wasted. Furniture choices, however, are just the start. Here are 11 of AD Germany’s top tips that combine style and functionality.

01 DON’T LEAVE CORNERS UNUSED

In old buildings and ones that have grown organically—that is buildings that have been gradually converted and adapted over time and where apartments may have been combined while previously unused spaces like attics have been converted into living areas—you’ll often find sloping corners and odd angles. But if you don’t have much space available, don’t let the challenge put you off. With some smart planning, even these areas can be turned into usable and stylish space.

02 BUILT-IN WARDROBES & CABINETS

Some storage solutions like cupboards with glass fronts, exposed clothes racks, and open shelving systems are unfortunately not the best choices for small apartments. A better choice is builtin wardrobes with doors that fill a space from wall to wall and up to the ceiling with storage. Clothes and other items can then disappear behind their understated and uniform fronts.

03

FURNITURE THAT CAN PLAY MULTIPLE ROLES

Choosing furniture that serves multiple purposes is one of the smartest ways to save space without compromising style. Whether it’s a storage ottoman or a dining table that doubles as a workspace, multifunctional pieces help you make the most of your square footage—perfect for smaller homes, apartments, or simply creating a more flexible, clutter-free space.

04

CREATE A ROOM WITHIN A ROOM

Even in small apartments, it can be useful to separate different functions such as cooking, showering, and sleeping with partitions. To avoid creating a shoebox feeling in these mini rooms, windows or transparent elements assure that every space receives natural light. In order to allow light throughout a unit, a “window” could be added to the functional space.

In Europe, Paris has a reputation as the capital of very small apartments—and the city’s designers are experts at stylish spacesaving. In this 344-square-foot home, the kitchenette in the living area is fitted into an alcove next to a cupboard with large panel doors. Behind the doors there is space for an oven, a cooktop, an extractor hood, a tea kettle, and a coffee machine.

DISAPPEAR BEHIND SLIDING DOORS

05

06

KITCHEN BENCH FOR EXTRA STORAGE SPACE

Are you looking for places to add storage space? Starting by taking a look under your seat. A lot of seating, like a stool with a lid or a bench with an open shelf, can double as storage space. The latter can be a particularly cozy solution in an eat-in kitchen and it offers as much storage space as a small cupboard.

07

USE STORAGE SPACE UNDER BEDS

Even in bedrooms with low ceilings, a platform bed can offer storage equivalent to a full wardrobe— thanks to deep drawers hidden beneath the mattress. Painting the bed to match your walls, like a rich navy or vibrant lime green, adds a cohesive and playful touch. This solution keeps the space tidy while making a bold, modern design statement.

USE A HEADBOARD AS A ROOM DIVIDER

The first thought when placing furniture in a room is typically to line it up along the walls. However, it can also be a good idea to place the bed a little bit in front of the closet. An extra-tall headboard, like this one in the home of interior designer Lucie Socrates, can act as a room divider. Clothes and other items will be out of sight, and you can create a separate space that almost feels like a luxurious walk-in closet.

09 REPLACE A CLUNKY DESK WITH A NARROW WORKTOP

Even very, very small rooms or unused corners can offer enough space for a workstation. If, for example, a typical desk won’t fit, an elegant and budget friendly alternative is to have a narrow board run between two walls. It can then serve both a shelf and a desk, as in this project by interior designer Constanze Ladner.

USE CURTAINS TO HIDE STORAGE

10

placing furniture a bit out from the edges of a room can be an elegantly different approach. Here that same strategy is carried out in the living room by placing the sofa in front of a bookshelf. This saves wall space and creates a coziness while providing some extra dimension to the room. The curtain in front of the shelf removes visual distraction and can also be used as a form of sound insulation, creating a space that is more peaceful and quiet.

STYLISH WALL DECOR IDEAS THAT'LL MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK SO DETAILED 0

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

Whether you've just moved in or you're wanting a summer refresh, there are plenty of things you can do to the walls in your home to make your space more interesting and put-together. From embracing a playful accent wall to installing a beautiful wallpaper pattern, you can easily use paint or wallcoverings to achieve a more visually appealing look throughout your house. However, to give these blank canvases more depth, you should really be thinking about what designer-approved wall decor ideas you can implement. Sometimes, the smallest details in your home are the most challenging to figure out. There are just so many possibilities, and with wall decor, it’s no different.

Do you use all matching frames? How can you make your wall visually interesting without hammering into it? Should you have a theme to your decor, or put up what you want? Well, the designer advice ahead can help steer you in the right style direction.

We’ve rounded up 55 of the most beautiful wall decor ideas from design professionals that’ll help spark some inspiration. From solitary pieces to museum quality layouts to colorful collections, there’s something for everyone.

BLANK WALLS? NEVER HEARD OF 'EM.

GET A LITTLE WILD

For a playful twist on traditional wall decor, consider incorporating whimsical elements like rattan animal heads. A collection of these can add personality and a sense of fun to a space, bringing in a lighthearted, creative energy.

THINK IN 3D

Incorporating a three-dimensional wall sculpture is a great way to add depth and interest to a room. Placing it in a prominent yet protected spot, such as above a mantel, ensures it becomes a focal point while staying out of high-traffic areas.

CLUSTER IN THREES

To achieve a balanced look on a wall without making it feel too empty or cluttered, consider using the rule of threes. Grouping three smaller decor pieces alongside a larger artwork can create visual harmony and add interest without overwhelming the space.

GO GRAYSCALE

A black and white palette can create a bold, high-impact look, especially when extended to wall decor. An arrangement of grayscale artwork adds visual interest while maintaining the simplicity and sophistication of a neutral color scheme.

SET THE MOOD

A grid arrangement of iconic photographs can help set the mood and define the atmosphere of a room. When paired with natural textures like a jute rug and simple wood furniture, it creates a laid-back yet sophisticated environment that feels effortless and inviting.

BREAK UP THE SCENE

A triptych arrangement of artwork can create a cohesive and visually striking effect by using three coordinating pieces that connect to form one panoramic composition. This style offers a unique way to display multiple artworks while maintaining a unified and harmonious look in a space.

CREATE SOME CONTRAST

Creating contrast with wall decor is an effective way to highlight and complement an existing design scheme. Choosing artwork with colors that stand out against the surrounding walls—especially in richly saturated spaces— can add visual interest and draw the eye to key areas of the room.

STICK TO A TIGHT PALETTE

Minimalist, modern interiors can still benefit from wall decor when it's subtle and understated. Using a pair of framed prints with light, airy frames and generous white borders can add visual interest while maintaining a neutral, uncluttered atmosphere.

CHOOSE A THEME

Choosing a theme for wall art is a great way to make a space feel personal and meaningful. A gallery wall featuring portraits or other related pieces can create a cohesive and visually engaging display, especially when curated from a mix of sources like vintage shops or online marketplaces.

To create a warm, glowing effect and enhance natural light in a space, opt for wall art with a metallic finish. This can range from a reflective wall covering to a simple oversized brass sculpture, adding shine and visual interest to the room.

CHOOSE FUN SCENES

Choosing fun and decorative sconces can add personality and style to a space. When combined with a mix of colors, patterns, and textures, these lighting fixtures help bring a room to life and create a lively, inviting atmosphere.
