INTERIOR DESIGN FORECAST 2025

Looking for a leg up on the new year? Dive into these expert-led projections into technology, color, and trends that will rule 2025—including a heapinghelping ofnostalgia.

SOURCED FROM: Architectural Digest. "2025 Interior Design Forecast: AD Pro's Predictions For The Whole Home."

As we reflect on the design trends of the past year, it’s clear that our homes have come to not only represent ourselves, but a projection of what we need to feel comforted. Enveloping color, textured materials, and as much or as little technology as desired—each element contributes to spaces that can soothe or excite, depending on the gathering type.

In this member-exclusive AD PRO trend report, we explore what next year’s homes will say about how we want to live— and the designs that will do the talking. From material-drenched finishes to a healthy obsession with nostalgia to the home-tech upgrades that have true staying power, our predictions for 2025’s interior design trends are supported by significant market analysis, top-notch reportage, and expert opinions from our comprehensive network of design talents, including AD100 honorees and architect, designer, and builder members of the AD PRO Directory. For the larger societal shifts that these revelations represent, we hope you find them as significant as we do. represent, we hope you find them as significant as we do.

SIX FABRICS + FINISHES TRENDS TO SPECIFY IN

WOOD GOES DARK

“We’re doing a ton of darker stain so it has a more Craftsman, [William] Morris, or even a Stickley feel,” using woods like oak, walnut, cherry, and mahogany. The AD PRO Directory member is also struck by efforts that “bring richness into Brutalism.”

TACTILE FINISHES & PAINTS

Jamie Davis, cofounder of Portola Paints—whose Roman Clay and Lime Wash series are designer go-tos—predicts that while neutral shades have staying power, saturated hues in textured finishes will allow subtler experimentation.

SUMPTUOUS DETAILS

Mulholland has been noticing “a slow return to passementerie. A slipper chair with a luxurious fringe is nothing new, but I’m talking cords, tassels, tapes— trimmings beloved by grande dame decorators of the past and rendered obsolete with the emergence of minimalism in all its forms.”

20 25

FABRICS OF ALL COLORS & STRIPES

Now, those accustomed to sleek, monochromatic environments “want to bring in color and fabrics,” like traditionalist neighbors who “still want to see solid, stripes, and florals.”

METALS THAT BREATHE

Parallel with nature-informed hues, Abess is “leaning into living, breathing materials” like unlacquered brass, as well as mixing metals. Reinis’s current projects incorporate a range of metal finish combinations too.

NATURE-INSPIRED COLORWAYS

In Bay Area projects, Jung is already registering “a studied, or more nuanced use of color and color story” where openness to purple-lavender and the yellowgreen family of ochre, chartreuse, and mustard allow for “moodier and more romantic” interiors.

HOW “MATERIAL DRENCHING” BECAME THE BATHROOM’S HOTTEST TREND

During AD PRO’s Luxury Bath Trend Report workshop in October 2024, one theme came up again and again: material drenching. Consider this the sequel to color drenching. According to AD100 designer Jake Arnold, who coined the term, applying a single material—whether tile, stone, plaster, or something else— across a bathroom is a great way to achieve a polished, chic look. For 2025, it feels like a natural evolution of the other “allover” aesthetic trends dominating the fashion world and other parts of the home.

And as it turns out, the bathroom is an ideal location for this kind of aesthetic experimentation. “Many of the powder rooms we build are intimate, immersive spaces that offer designers the perfect opportunity to tell a story through their material selections,” shares Ryder Reynolds, principal at Seattle’s Dowbuilt, a high-end residential builder on the newly expanded AD PRO Directory. represent, we hope you find them as significant as we do.

RICH COLOR PALETTES

Leave those muted colors back in 2024. Melanie Russo of Calder Design Group is predicting that rich color palettes will be on-trend this year. "Think deep greens, moody blues, and luxurious plums. These shades create a real sense of richness and intimacy in a space, making it feel more like a sanctuary."

TEXTURE EVERYWHERE

Founder of June St. George, Ally-Catherine Trenary tells me 2025 is the year to take any surface to the next level by adding a major dose of texture. "Wallpaper will remain a go-to, with grasscloth and linen papers adding an organic, elevated touch beyond the standard flat finish."

LIVED-IN LUXURY

Award-winning interior designer Ryan Saghian has found his clients moving away from perfection and instead opting to create authentic yet elevated homes. "Expect a mix of vintage and modern, sculptural furniture, and a focus on craftsmanship—think hand-carved wood, natural stone, woven textiles, and aged metals that feel warm and real."

SOURCED FROM: Forbes. "Interior Designers Predict These Will Be The 15 Hottest Interior Design Trends In 2025."

PATTERN DRENCHING

This year Scheck tells me this concept will evolve with pattern drenching. “It embraces the power of bold patterns, adding layers of personality and warmth into any space. Whether through wallpaper, bedding, or rugs, pattern drenching can transform a simple room into a lively, cozy environment that feels both immersive and welcoming.”

BESPOKE INTERIORS

Done are the days of simple buildergrade styles and their opposite, TikTok microtrends. "Rather than chasing trends, homeowners want spaces that reflect their long-term needs and personal aesthetics. Custom detailing, vintage layering, and one-of-a-kind craftsmanship are at the forefront of design decisions.

WELLNESS IN DESIGN

According to Audrey Frances Doty of Audrey Frances Design, wellness features are a must-have for bathroom renovations. "Bathrooms are now being designed for the full-day spa experience. This growing trend in wellness design is a focus on personal well-being through designing restorative spaces and a deliberate emphasis on multi-sensory experiences."

ERGONOMIC DESIGN

As generations age and either downsize or renovate their current residences, they increasingly prioritize long-term usability and comfort, explains Ho. "Homeowners are moving beyond aesthetics to consider ergonomics and ease of use."

CHAOTIC CURATION

This concept is so easy to embrace because it works everywhere. "Your space should reflect what you truly love. Don’t shy away from displaying your cherished collections - whether it's vintage ceramics, framed letters, or decor you designed yourself—if it speaks to you, it belongs. If you love it, it will work."

VINTAGE FINDS

Perhaps we’ve all been influenced by those “Thrift With Me” videos, but what’s old is new again. "There's been a resurgence of vintage and retro accents in decor. Incorporating antique or retro-inspired pieces adds character and a sense of history to interiors, creating a unique and personalized aesthetic," shares content creator and podcaster Emily Coyne, who is better known as Emily O and Bows.

DESIGN TRENDS IN

2025

7 gardenTRENDS YOU'LL SEE EVERYWHERE IN 2025

Whether you have a tiny urban backyard or a rambling garden in the country, our outdoor spaces offer a welcoming place to reconnect with nature, unwind with family and gather with friends. As an extension of our homes, our gardens also offer a way to express our creativity and personal style.

As your garden matures and changes through the season, garden trends evolve through the years. While some concepts, such as pollinator gardens and drought-tolerant plantings, have been trending for several years, other designs, such as the use of bold color, are just beginning to take off. Because we’re continuing to blur the line between indoors and out, many garden trends in 2025 reflect interior design movements, such as the use of bold color.

In addition to design shifts, new plants that are more disease-resistant, water-wise, and long-blooming also are introduced every year. And because no garden is ever “complete,” you can incorporate trends and new plantings in your own garden every year, without having to renovate the entire space.

Read on to learn what garden trends you’ll see in 2025—as well as how to add them to your own backyard.

NATURALISTIC DESIGNS

2

1 BOLD COLORS & TEXTURES

Homeowners are craving a more natural look in the garden, with a less structured, more naturalistic appearance that relies heavily on perennials with different bloom times. “We’re calling this design the ‘Modern Meadow,’” says Katie Tamony, chief marketing officer and trend spotter at Monrovia.

WHAT TO PLANT:

Pink Pearl Agastache, Saucy Red Salvia, Saucy Purple Salvia, Estrellita Scarlet Bouvardia

While serene neutrals always have a place in the garden, homeowners are gravitating toward bold new colors. “People are being drawn in by AI plant images or the idea of plants that deliver new and unique colors and textures, even if they aren’t real,” says Natalie Carmolli, public relations specialist at Proven Winners.

WHAT TO PLANT:

Fire Chief Arborvitae, Sunset Celebration

Gaillardia, Evolution Colorific Coneflower, Ever Twilight Agapanthus, Skyscraper Senecio

WATER-WISE PLANTINGS

4

3 LIVING FENCES

Reflecting the ongoing desire for low-maintenance landscapes, plants that don’t require tons of water are becoming increasingly popular with gardeners. Whether you’re concerned about drought or you just don’t want to have to coddle your plants, water-wise plants can include annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees that don’t need to be watered regularly once established.

WHAT TO PLANT:

Chicklet Gold Esperanza, Canna Cannova

Bronze Scarlet, Bells of Fire Tecoma Bouvardia

Fences may make good neighbors, but living hedges are even better because they’re not a solid wall that stops the eye. With smaller lot sizes, many homeowners also want plantings that will improve privacy. Mixed hedges that utilize many different plants, instead of one species, also are trending because they’re less formal and provide a cottage garden feel that remains popular.

WHAT TO PLANT:

Yardline Viburnum, Red Sky Holly, Diamond Spire Gardenia, Butterfly Towers Magenta Buddleia

5

7

A SENSE OF LUXURY & NOSTALGIA

The appeal of gardens with a “lived-in” look is increasing, meaning people want gardens that evoke a sense of history and a feeling that they’ve been evolving for decades. Think lush vines, romantic blooms, and fast-growing plants that fill in the garden quickly and that have a long flowering season.

WHAT TO PLANT:

Dear Dolores Hydrangea, Encore Azaleas, Magic Mona Purple Plectranthus, Eau de Parfum Bling Rose, Rise Up Lilac Days Rose

PERSONALIZED DETAILS

No matter what’s “in” or “out” at the moment, the most practical garden trend is to create a space that is personalized to your needs. That is, focus on making your outdoor space work for the types of activities your family enjoys. A few popular elements of personalization include: Modular outdoor kitchens with built-ins such as beverage coolers, counter seating for entertaining, pizza ovens, and fire pits.

6

GROWING YOUR OWN FLOWERS & FORAGING

Boutique flower farms have popped up everywhere in recent years, highlighting a strong interest in buying locally. Gardeners are eager to try their hands at growing their own flowers, too, in a cutting garden, and many types of flowers can be grown easily from seed. Foraging has taken off as a new hobby as well, with people snipping flowers from their own backyards to create one-of-a-kind bouquets using “found” materials from shrubs and perennials, as well as annuals.

REAL ESTATE TRENDS & SMART HOMES IN 2025

Smart homes are no longer an option for a few tech-savvy people; they have become retrofitted into contemporary home solutions. A smart home refers to devices or systems homeowners adopt that can link to the Internet and be controlled remotely through a smartphone, voice command, or other smart devices.

These technologies improve the functionality, security, and comfort of homes and the quality of life.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE

FUTURE OF LIVING

CONVENIENCE

Residents want products that make their everyday routine more convenient, including controlling lighting, temperature, and access points. Smart home systems incorporate comfort into the lives of the residents as they can easily manage their home environments.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY HOMES + SUSTAINABILITY

If sustainability remains one of the goals, smart homes can help homeowners and contribute to an overall low emissions rate.

Intelligent temperature control systems, efficient lighting systems, and ‘smart’ solar panels for controlling energy usage within the home help homeowners conserve energy and minimize power usage costs.

SAFETY + SECURITY

Secure, protective, and sophisticated security arrangements, including surveillance cameras, motion detectors, smart doors, and smart alarm systems, are useful. The system allows the homeowner to observe their property from a distance, receive alerts, and control the access points, improving security.

AGEING-IN-PLACE

There is a growing concern for the elderly and the ideal living arrangement they prefer since many elderly people want to “age in place.” Voice recognition systems, personal alarms, telemedicine, and other health monitoring systems make this concept possible and enjoyable.

KEY DRIVERS OF THE SMART HOME

REVOLUTION

VOICE-ACTIVATED ASSISTANTS

Smart assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri will remain popular with clients.

SMART THERMOSTATS + HVAC SYSTEMS

By 2025, intelligent thermostats such as Nest or Ecobee will further develop AI functions to teach the homeowner’s preferences.

AUTOMATED LIGHTING

Lighting systems will remain innovative by providing multiple schedules and a mood for indoor environments.

ADVANCED HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

Instead, security technology will improve, becoming more effective and efficient in detecting threats. Also anticipated are features like powered face recognition, a camera, and real-time alerts.

SMART KITCHEN APPLIANCES

There are plans for innovations in smart kitchen appliances that can interact with each other in the kitchen area.

HEALTH + WELLNESS MONITORING

Wellness monitoring will also become embedded in smart homes in 2025, with sensors installed in various objects to monitor air quality, humidity, temperature, and even noise.
