CAN THE AVERAGE PERSON OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET? I used to think that if I train often, play sport and keep active, I can literally eat the world . Unfortunately after the age of 18 I began to realise this wasn’t the case.
poor workout. After a discussion with them I find out that they haven’t eaten for the past eight hours... no wonder you can’t achieve new heights in the gym!
I remember the days at university when before a rugby match I would eat a boost bar, two cans of full sugar red bull and a bottle of sports energy fruit juice for the warm up, after having a bacon sandwich for breakfast. The game kicked off at 11! After the game I would then have dinner at Nandos with all the team before hitting the town and drinking several drinks for the rugby social. BUT this was fine because I played rugby for 80 minutes that day. No wonder I got up to the highs of seventeen and a half stone!
So, going back to the question of can the average person out train a bad diet, the simple answer is a resounding no.
I know this is the extreme of the thought that “I am active and I can eat and drink what I want”, but the principles are still the same. I hear on a daily basis whilst working in the gym, members coming to the gym and then rewarding their hard work with “treats”. On the other hand their are members who simply do not eat enough or enough of the right things. I hear these members talking about being exhausted and therefore having a
Here are five reasons why:
1
You are not a professional athlete! Bradley Wiggins can eat up to 5000-7000 calories per day during the tour de France; this is more than twice the recommended amount of calories for the average male. To eat and drink 5000-7000 calories consistently is extremely hard when eating clean and calorie dense foods such as flapjacks and sugary treats are essential. But does this mean that the average person could eat this sort of amount or types of food? Unfortunately, the average Joe completing a workout for an hour a day is not an athlete, even spending two hours smashing the gym, is not enough of an excuse to eat complete rubbish. Completing a Tour de France stage each day is around 100km of cycling up gruelling hills at high speeds, on top of the amount
NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER 2015 [ 5 ]
of training that goes into getting the fittest levels of a pro cyclist. Professional endurance athletes can get away with eating some “naughty foods”. This is not to say that the average person cannot eat some treats, but it means that you need some moderation.
2
You won’t be able to train well if you’re overdoing it with the wrong foods! To effectively change your physique and stay toned requires intense exercise. You won’t have the physical endurance to push through tough workouts if your diet isn’t up to snuff. Yes, that unfortunately means that whilst three packs of rolos and a Red Bull may give you a sugar high that
you mistake as energy, they won’t fuel you to PB on the bench press or improve your 5km time on the treadmill. You’ll need a combination of carbohydrates and protein to recover following a workout, as well as adequate carbohydrates beforehand too.
3
You won’t have the energy to exercise well if you’re not eating enough Many diet plans and diet fads might seem healthy and are often branded and sold to people as healthy. One for example is the super low carbohydrate or calorie diet; this is very detrimental to your training.
[ 6 ] GOSLING MAGAZINE Restrictive dieting alongside a hard exercise routine will leave you eating into your muscle to fuel your workouts, leading to a decrease in your ability to train. Another type of a restrictive diet plan is the low fat diet. Not getting enough fat in your body, can leave you unable to effectively produce energy and grow muscle due to the lowering of some hormones such as insulin and testosterone. Time and time again gym members lose momentum in the gym from following a restrictive diet, the constant battle of being tired and not achieving any new goals in the gym can kill anyone’s enjoyment of the gym. Eating in moderation and eating adequate amounts of all types of foods is essential for your success in the gym and your achievements.
4
You won’t be able to see your hard graft in the gym! Are you having a hard time sculpting the bum you want or a six pack? Even if you complete several abs workouts a week having a beer belly over the top is pointless; you may have the perfectly sculpted abs but if they are covered up with the beer and kebab that you ate at the weekend what was the point of completing the workouts.
I am not saying don’t do the abs work because you’ll never see the results, I am simply saying stop eating and drinking the rubbish so you can see the hard work that you’re putting in.
5
You could get sick - or hurt! Low-carb and low-fat diets can be mentally draining and have a negative impact on your body. Studies have found that not taking in an adequate amount of healthy fats may raise your chances for overuse injuries (such as stress fractures and tendonitis) and it doesn’t allow your body to protect itself in order to stay healthy. Furthermore, if you pair a low-fat diet with intense exercise, it can lower your immunity even further so your chances of a cold go up. 6 Myths of Strength Training for Women Over the past few years, women have been moving away from the cardio part of the gym and taking a step towards resistance training. Yet, a social stigma still exists that prevents women to actively strength train.
predisposition to it!
Women worry that they will get massive legs, huge shoulders or super defined biceps. Well I have news for you: that will not happen unless you train, eat and supplement like a body builder and have a
In this review I will go through some myths surrounding strength training, benefits of strength training and recommendations for women who strength train.
Women lack physiological adaptations that will enable this as well as the correct amount of hormones (mainly testosterone) to support this.
NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER 2015 [ 23 ]
Myths of Strength Training for Women
1
Lifting heavy will make you bulky Lifting heavy will make you stronger, will burn fat and increase lean muscle mass – hence definition. Women do not have enough naturally occurring testosterone to gain size. Solution: Lift heavy to get stronger, try to up the weight you are lifting as often as you can in order to keep getting stronger and promote progression.
2
Exercise the muscle group you want to lose fat in We are all predisposed to store fat in certain areas. You need to train your whole body and take care of your diet in order to lose weight. Solution: Use compound full body movement and stay on top of your diet to promote fat loss.
3
Cardio is Essential Sweating does not mean you are losing weight. A concrete number of calories lost also does not mean that it is the most efficient way to lose weight. Solution: Strength train as often as you can or do a combination of both cardio and strength; if you do enjoy your cardio there is no reason to stop it as long as you do it sensibly.
4
There is one universal programme No one programme will work for everyone.
Solution: Try different training methods and keep track of your progress.
5
Women cannot train like men Women can develop strength as much as men relative to their body weight. As such they can use the same training methods, exercise prescription, intensities and volume. Solution: Try different strength training methods; you deserve to use the free weights section as much as the men do.
6
Older women should not strength train Post-menopausal women are more susceptible to osteoporosis and hence should work on increasing bone strength which will also reduce the risk of injury and fractures. Solution: Strength training preserves bone density, improves muscle mass and strength and helps with balance. Benefits of Strength Training in Women - Increase bone strength and reduce the risk of osteoporosis - Stronger connective tissue to increase joint stability and reduce the risk of injury - Increase functional strength, balance and coordination - Increase lean body mass and reduce fat
[ 24 ] GOSLING MAGAZINE - Increase metabolic rate due to increased amount of muscle and decreased amount of fat. - Builds a stronger heart, reduces resting blood pressure and improves blood flow. - Helps control medical conditions such as blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Strength training recommendations - Use free weight, dumbells and body weight resistance
- Train the whole body focusing of big muscle compound exercises which are multi-planar and multijoint ie. squats, lunges, bench press and lat pull down. - Use high-intensity, high load training: this will enable bone, muscle, ligament and tendon adaptations. - Aim to train 2-3 times a week using a variety of strength training methods. AM I ‘TOO YOUNG’ TO PLAY BRIDGE? Vicky Salmon talks about her learning journey at Welwyn Garden City Bridge Club (based at Gosling Sports Park). I was brought up to enjoy playing cards but the most serious I ever got was occasionally playing ‘whist’ with my parents. I had thought I might learn to play bridge when I got to the stage where I could no longer run around playing badminton, tennis etc. I had been housebound after a medical procedure and it was a neighbour dropping in to visit me that mentioned bridge lessons at Welwyn Garden City Bridge Club. I took the opportunity of having someone to learn with and so enrolled. After my first two years of structured lessons I started going to Peter Clark’s Friday morning lessons and alternating workshops at the Gosling Sports Park. Last year was a particularly stressful time for me, during which 93yr old mother passed away. My bridge was a welcome relief as, being so focussed on the playing cards, I could escape my problems for the duration.
I have met some lovely people through playing bridge. Some players can be intense as they take the game so seriously but, on the whole, it is a friendly social game. In the past I would only attend Gosling Sports Park to exercise my body, but now I attend Gosling Sports Park to exercise my brain as well as my body! Thank goodness I persevered (and to a large point still am) for I feel that in the future I will never be lonely as long as I have Welwyn Garden City Bridge Club and the means to get there! To get involved at Welwyn Garden City Bridge Club, you don’t need to have played cards before, nor do you need a bridge partner. Just come along to our classes and we’ll get you started.
