9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Breakout Session I Baby Boomers and Beyond

May is Older Americans Month. Only 53 percent of eligible seniors in Florida are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps. This workshop addresses the health and nutrition needs of the older individual and provides tips to promote wholeness and wellness for this population.

Food Bank Financing 101

Learn ways to take control of your food bank account, track your spending and your ordering. We will give you the tools you need to keep your account current and improve your inventory, ordering and financial reporting.

Poverty and the Effects on Nutrition

Members of poor households who find it consistently hard to afford enough high-quality food experience poor nutrition. Foods high in sugar and empty calories become foods of choice. Learn tips to prepare a healthy, nutritious pantry bag and/or meal that clients will enjoy and appreciate.

Heroes Among Us

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a toll on American society, but no one has paid more dearly than returning veterans, along with their families and friends. Learn what happens once they come home and the challenges they face, and what you can do to help them.

10:45 - 11:45 a.m. Breakout Session II The Doctor’s In Dr. George Moon’s weekly radio talk show, “Healthy by Choice,” can be heard from Naples to Sarasota and online. This workshop provides attendees with a chance to ask questions about nutrition and health and get the latest information.

Telling Your Financial Story Your monthly, quarterly or annual financial reports tell the story of your financial activities to that point in time. Your budget for any year also tells a story. It speaks to your direction and goals for the future. This workshop prepares you to better read and understand your financials, identify patterns and risks, and understand the causes and effects that can help you prosper.

The Return of SNAP Time Limits Where did you go? Why have you returned? Get accurate information about this existing law that will affect many of your clients and programs.

In Their Own Words Former food pantry recipients share their stories about the circumstances that led them to access the emergency food distribution program, their experience and their current circumstances. This workshop will help you become more mindful of the needs of the people you serve.

Homeless is My Address, Not My Name For many hard-working people, a loss of a job or sudden illness can quickly lead to homelessness. Individuals and families at risk of homelessness often need only temporary services to pull through an unfortunate situation. This workshop will dispel the myth that may distort one’s perception about the homeless and those in need of support.

Produce: The Body’s Superfood Learn the nutritional and medicinal value of produce and how to store it, keep it safe, and enjoy it.

SNAP: Let’s Talk Join us for an open dialogue about SNAP and the return of ABAWD (Able Bodied Adults Without Dependents). We will also discuss the benefits of integrating this much-needed resource into your program. Come with your questions; we have the answers.

Abdul’Haq Muhammed Executive Director Quality Life Center

Keynote Speaker

Abdul’haq Muhammed is founder and executive director of Quality Life Center. A community leader and motivational speaker, he works to uplift children and adults through confidence-building programs that teach tools to live a rewarding life.

Muhammed previously worked as a drug counselor, youth counselor, and sensitivity trainer for the New York City Police Department. He co-founded a nonprofit agency in the Bronx that ran programs for needy populations, from at-risk youth to ex-offenders.

He has been recognized for his work in the Dunbar community by Florida’s governor and attorney general, the Lee County Bar Association, Gulfshore Business magazine, and The News-Press. Most recently, he was recognized for spearheading Pennies for Community Progress, a movement to end poverty and violence in Lee County.

Richard LeBer

President & CEO

Richard LeBer has a long career of community involvement, with deep experience in the for-profit and nonprofit sectors, particularly food banking, fundraising, board leadership, strategy and operations. LeBer has held numerous leadership positions, including interim executive director of the Florida Association of Food Banks, vice president at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and CEO of National Linen Service.

LeBer is past chairman of the board of the Atlanta Community Food Bank and former board member of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. LeBer is a graduate of Harvard Business School and the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Keith Scoggins

Board Chairman

Keith Scoggins was an attorney with the federal Farm Credit System for more than 35 years. He is the retired senior vice president and general counsel of 1st Farm Credit Services, Normal, IL. Scoggins is a full-time resident of Estero. He has also served on other boards of directors, including a captive insurance company, federal credit union, and several homeowners associations.

Presenters & Panelists Kevin Boyd

American Legion Post Commander Kevin Boyd left Brooklyn College and joined the Navy when he felt the call to serve his country and follow in his father’s footsteps. After his naval service, he moved to Florida, and is now post commander at American Legion Post 38.

Boyd is also president of the River District Alliance for Historical Downtown Fort Myers and a board member for several other organizations, including the American Red Cross, Police Athletic League, and Hearts and Homes for Veterans. He is also primary care giver for his mother, 92, and father, 97, a retired Navy Veteran.

Ian Connell

ACCESS Community Partner Liaison, 20th Judicial Circuit Ian Connell came to the Department of Children and Families in 2006, where he is a community partner liaison for the ACCESS Florida program. The program helps provide access to public assistance services such as SNAP or Medicaid. Community partners work to provide a variety of services to those seeking or receiving assistance.

He previously worked in a management position with a major agricultural manufacturing company, responsible for an area including Argentina, Louisiana, and the Caribbean.

Rene Givens

Executive Director Hunger and Homeless Coalition of Collier County Rene Givens works to raise awareness of the risk of homelessness and its causes in Collier County. She coauthored the coalition’s 20/20 Vision: A Community Ten Year Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness.

Givens completed her master’s and doctoral studies in cultural anthropology, with a specialization in urbanization, race and ethnicity, and the history of Latin America and the Caribbean. Her research activities have taken her throughout both areas.

Veronica Jarrett

Financial Operations Professional Veronica Jarrett founded Jarrett Consulting Group, LLC, in 2014. Her firm provides financial management and advisory services to non-profits and small businesses.

Jarrett previously served two terms as the chief financial officer for the Food Bank For New York City.

She also served as chief financial officer of Youth and Family Alternatives, Inc. in Florida.

Jarrett has taught financial management courses and workshops at several colleges and the NYC Agency for Child Services. She has provided technical job training in accounting to displaced homemakers and taught basic computing skills to Bronx Community College students, and continues to teach financial skills at various organizations and churches. She has bachelor’s degrees in accounting from Bernard M. Baruch College and leadership and entrepreneurship from Walden University.

Samantha Lloyd

Samantha Lloyd is from Bartow in Central Florida. She moved to France when she was 10 and lived there for six-and-a-half years. While living abroad, she was diagnosed with early onset scoliosis and had corrective surgery at age 13. Samantha grew up in a low-income family and always understood what it was like to be

When she moved to Fort Myers two years ago for college, she became a client at several food pantries across Lee County and eventually discovered the Campus Food Pantry at Florida Gulf Coast University.

She became a client in 2014, then a volunteer in 2015, and is now the coordinator herself while majoring in health science administration. She is passionate about helping those experiencing food insecurity understand that they are not alone.

Dr. George Moon DC., MS., DACBN Chiropractor & Radio Talk Show Host

Dr. George Moon has been a chiropractic physician for 51 years. He’s also hosted a live radio talk show, Healthy by Choice, for 11 years at 9 a.m. Saturdays on 91.5 FM. Dr. Moon has a master’s degree in clinical nutrition, and was nationally board-certified by the American Clinical Board of Nutrition in 1986. He has a family practice in Naples with his daughter, Dr. Trudy Moon-Eisel, and son Dr. Robert Moon, DC., DACBN.

Carolyn Peplow

Social Service Coordinator Lehigh Community Services Carolyn Peplow works with Lehigh Acres residents in need of food, online application assistance, and financial assistance. She also coordinates other social service needs with various providers at the Lehigh Community Services office.

Peplow moved here from Rolla, Mo. in 2015, where she served as executive director of the United Way of Phelps County, and membership director for the Rolla Chamber of Commerce. Peplow’s various leadership roles have given her a deep understanding of nonprofit management, philanthropy, and communications.

Barbara Short

Quality Assurance Program Manager CareerSource Southwest Florida Barbara Short is responsible for the program design and implementation of several federally funded programs offered throughout Southwest Florida. They include: program manager for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Family program, SNAP program, Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act, and the region’s Labor Exchange program.

Most recently Short implemented an iCareer program, an initiative to help individuals reach self-sufficiency.

Dr. Teresa Spano

Naturopathic Consultant Lee Physician Group Integrative Medicine Dr. Teresa Spano completed four years of doctoral training in naturopathic medicine at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine, after earning a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Freelance Journalist, Graduate Student A graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University’s journalism program, Laura Tichy-Smith is a freelance reporter for The News-Press and Florida Weekly. She is also a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in English at the University of Central Florida.

Deima Torna

SNAP Outreach Coordinator Harry Chapin Food Bank Deima Torna coordinates outreach for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). She hails from Worcester, Mass., where she worked in special education for 21 years and volunteered with Catholic Charities.

Jennifer Vargo MPH, RD, LDN LD Coordinator, Lee

Jennifer Vargo moved to Florida in 2001 after receiving both her bachelor’s of science in nutrition and master’s of public health degrees from Benedictine University in Illinois. She joined Lee Memorial Health System in 2011.

Jennifer has extensive experience in long-term care, acute care, food service management, and home health care experiences.

Jim Wall

Communications Director CareerSource Southwest Florida Jim Wall has spent more than 25 years in the employment and training field, and is known locally as the “Career Doctor.” Wall is the communications director for the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board, also known as CareerSource Southwest Florida. Wall has been a leader in the development of career centers throughout Southwest Florida.
