What’s going on at Harrow Weald Lawn Tennis Club?

So much has happened since our last newsletter, including summer tournaments, team matches, Open Day, Finals Day, Junior Tournament Day, v arious BBQs, junior camps…

SO MUCH. So let’s hav e a read about just a snippet of the goings-on at HW LTC.

We’re always looking for volunteers W ant to help the Club at some point? Perhaps run a tea, do some odd jobs in the Clubhouse or brush the courts? Let the Committee know that you want to get inv olv ed.

Ladies’ and Men’s Drawn Tournaments Our annual drawn tournaments will ov erlap again this year, with the Men’s starting at 12.30pm and the Ladies’ starting at 2pm.

Another ace of an Open Day Ov er 120 people came through our gates on the middle Sunday of W imbledon this year – check out the action on the front page, and on our Facebook page. W elcome to our new members!

Give us an I, a P, an A… New members weren’t all that were introduced this summer. As soon as Richard tasted the “exceptional” Rebellion beer at one of our “riv al” clubs, he knew we just had to try it at our bar – and there’ll be more Smugglers and IPA from the Marlow Bottom Brewery where that came from.

Teatime at Tennis in aid of Mind As well as training for the Royal Parks Half Marathon, Tasha’s been raising money for Mind, the mental health charity, ov er the last few months. To help her fundraising, she’s also been baking for a couple of tea weekends at the Club.

Come to our next HWLTC Forum Our biannual Forum is an opportunity for members of all age groups to hav e their say on the ins and outs of the Club. Let Pauline know if you want to come along or just turn up.

ERMC Health Fair There’ll be medical talks, health checks, v accines, children's face painting, a raffle, and food and drink at Enderley Road Medical Centre’s first Health Fair, being held at our Club.

Kevin and Margaret win American Tournament Cups A beautiful morning on 27 August set the scene for the final American tournament of the Season. Going into it, Margaret led the Ladies' competition by one point ov er Reena, and Stev e led the Men's competition by one point ov er Kev in. It was neck and neck until the v ery end in both tournaments, but Kev in and Margaret came out top ov erall, crowning them American Tournament champions. Ladies’ second team unstoppable in Division 5 In what was a mixed Summer Season for our teams, here are the top lines: there was no contest for our Ladies’ second team, winning 133 rubbers to gain a promotion to Div ision 4 (congrats, ladies!); in what was a v ery close div ision 6 between fiv e of the teams (a mere eight points in it), the Men’s third team achiev ed third; and our Men’s 4s had a tough Season, but are sure to bounce back next year.

It would take the ‘team’ out of ‘team tennis’ if we didn’t mention our team players.

Kudos go to Captain Kev in of our Men’s 2s, who placed in the top 20 players in div ision 3, and to Miles, Paul, Angela and Alita – four of our first team players – who placed in the top three players of their div isions. Thanks to ev eryone who played in our teams this year; who represented our Club and also prov ided some v ery tasty meals. Take a look at the final standings on the LTA website.

Under-12 team has a fantastic first season Our Under-12s made a real impression in the Aegon Team Tennis Middlesex Summer League, with each match consisting of 4 singles and 2 doubles games (best of 3 sets).

The young team finished the league in second place, but beat Headstone, W est End Pinner and Eastcote 12-0. This is a real testament to the quality of coaching prov ided

by Roy and Darren of R&D Coaching in our Junior Academy.

Neil Storhaug and Ryan McTiernan finished second and third in the indiv idual player rankings for the tournament. The squad was: Ryan McTiernan, Elliot Pelling, Dav ide Ben Yair, Neal Storhaug, Aaryan Bid, and John Rattigan. W ell done, boys!

The W inter League is now underway and hopes are high for this v ery promising group.

Put some spice into your Sunday afternoons with Family Social Run by Stuart McTiernan, Family Social (Sunday, 2-4pm) is a fabulous opportunity for members and their children to get ev en more v alue from their membership.

Juniors can come along for some friendly but competitiv e tennis, and parents can hav e a fun hit at the same time. Adult members, without children, are also welcome if they would like a friendly hit to build confidence for the more formal Social Tennis sessions on W ednesday ev enings and Saturday afternoons.

Opt in to the Wimbledon Ballot The more people that hav e a British Tennis Membership and opt in to the W imbledon ballot, the more pairs of tickets we get allocated for the 2018 championships. Join away and opt in!

Cardio Tennis Sure, it’s getting chillier. But there’s nothing that can make you sweatier than one of Roy and Darren’s Cardio Tennis workouts.

It’s a great session for ev eryone to get fit and hav e fun.

Congratulations to our champions W e’v e always been lucky with the weather on Finals Day, but this year there was rain, rain, and more rain. W hilst the Ladies’ Final was completed and plenty of food and drink was consumed, the rest of the finals were rearranged on different dates. There were some fantastic games – in particular the Men’s Doubles, which ended in a championship tiebreak on a Thursday night. BBQ heaven at Play & Stay That’s all that needs to be said, really. Phwoar.

Socials on the horizon Confirmed socials include a W ine and Cheese Night on 11 Nov ember, our Adult Christmas Party on 16 December, and our Dinner Dance at Northwood Golf Club on 3 February. More details will be coming to members’ inboxes soon!

Mixed Drawn Tournament In addition to the Autumn Mixed, our Mixed Drawn is coming up.

The difference is that the games are shorter and it only takes a few hours to get a winner. Contact Stev e and Steph to register.

Play & Stay – every first Saturday of the month You should know the drill by now: tennis from 5pm, social – including food and drinks – from around 7.30pm. Guests allowed (please note that a guest fee for tennis is £10 with floodlights).

Adult Christmas Party It’s not quite the Season, but it will be v ery soon! Our adult Christmas party will inv olv e mulled wine, Pass the Parcel, a festiv e feast, a raffle and a v ery special HW LTC Christmas Mass.

Dinner Dance 2018 Sav e the date for our annual Dinner Dance, which will be held at Northwood Golf Club. There’ll be trophies presented, a raffle, speeches… oh, and dinner and dancing. Party time for 15+!
