REMOVE & FIFTH FORM CURRICULUM

INTRODUCTION

IntheRemoveandFifthForm,students,withthe supportofteachers,HeadsofHouseandHouseTutors, willbecomemoreindependentintheirlearning,more criticalintheirthinking,astheybegintoexercise leadershipskillsandconsolidatetheknowledgeand skillsbasethatwillpreparethemfortheIBDiplomain theirfinaltwoyears.AtHarrowNewYorkwebelieve thatdeep,sustainedlearningisunderpinnedby relationships:studentswiththeirteachers,Tutorsand Counselorswhomanageeachindividual’sprogress,as wellasstudentswiththeirpeerswhowork collaborativelyinclassroomsandadvisorygroups.

IntheRemoveandFifthFormatHarrowNewYork, studentscompletethefinalyearsoftheInternational BaccalaureateMiddleYearsProgramme(MYP), refiningtheiracademicskillsandpreparingfortheIB DiplomaProgramme.Duringthesetwoyears,students developgreaterindependenceinlearning,critical thinking,andleadership.Thecurriculummaintainsa broad-basedstructurewhileofferingstudents opportunitiestoexploreareasofinterestingreater depth.TheMYP’sfocusoninquiry,globalcontexts, andinterdisciplinarylearningensuresthatstudentsare well-equippedforfutureacademicsuccessandlifelong learning.

Studentsengageinadvancedstudyofliteraryandnon-literarytexts,honingtheir abilitytoanalyzeandcommunicatecomplexideas.TheMYPframework encouragesstudentstoexploreglobalissuesthroughliterature,developstrong writingskills,andparticipateinmeaningfuldiscussions.

LANGUAGE & LITERATURE MATHEMATICS

MathematicsintheRemoveandFifthFormfollowstheMYPmodel,emphasizing problem-solving,abstractreasoning,andreal-worldapplications Topicscovered includealgebra,functions,statistics,andgeometry,providingastrongfoundation forfutureIBDiplomastudies.

SCIENCE

StudentsinRemoveandFifthFormwillbeexposedtothethreedifferentscience domainsonarotationbasis,thuspreparingthemfullytomakeaninformedchoice whenchoosingtheirscienceoptionsaspartoftheIBDiplomaProgramme. Over thetwo-yearprogramtheywillstudythefollowing:

Biology

ThiscoursefollowstheNewYorkStateScienceLearningStandardsinBiology.It requiresstudentstocultivatetheirunderstandingofbiologythroughinquiry-based investigationsastheyexploretopicslikeevolution,energetics,informationstorage andtransfer,andsysteminteractions Laboratoryworktoillustrateandsupportthese conceptsiscarriedoutregularlyaspartofthiscourse.

Chemsitry

ThiscoursefollowstheNewYorkStateScienceLearningStandardsinChemistry It exploresthecompositionofmatter,thechangesitundergoes,andthefactorswhich bringaboutandcontrolthesechanges.Laboratoryworktoillustrateandsupport theseconceptsiscarriedoutregularlyaspartofthiscourse.

Physics

ThiscoursefollowstheNewYorkStateScienceLearningStandardsinPhysicswith majoremphasisontheareasofmechanicsandwavephenomena.Itemphasizesthe quantitativestudyofinterrelationshipsbetweenvariousaspectsofmatterand energy Laboratoryworktoillustrateandsupporttheseconceptsiscarriedout regularlyaspartofthiscourse.

THE OPTIONS

Studentshavetheopportunitytotailortheireducationalexperiencebasedontheir interestsandfuturepathwaysthroughourbespokeoptionsprogram*.Studentsmust chooseoneoptionfromeachofthe4optionblockstostudythroughoutRemoveand FifthForm.Whileitisexpectedthatthiswillpreparestudentsfortheiroptions choiceintheIBDP,theywillstillhavetheopportunitytochooseadifferentoption intheSixthForm(atStandardLevelonly)ifdesired,andinconsultationwith faculty.

Social Science (Option 1)

ECONOMICS

Thiscoursedevelopsanunderstandingofeconomictheory,terminologyand principles.Studentsstudytheeconomicsofdifferentcountriesandhowthese interrelate.Theyalsolearntoworkwithsimpleeconomicdataandtousethetools ofeconomicanalysis.

GEOGRAPHY

Throughthiscourse,studentswilldevelopa'senseofplace'bylookingattheworld aroundthemonalocal,regionalandglobalscale.Studentswillexaminearangeof naturalandman-madeenvironments,andstudysomeoftheprocesseswhich affectedtheirdevelopment.Theywillalsolookatthewaysinwhichpeopleinteract withtheirenvironment,andtheopportunitiesandchallengesanenvironmentcan present.

HISTORY

Thiscourseoffersstudentstheopportunitytodiscoverkeyissues,ideas,people,and eventsthatshapedtheemergenceanddevelopmentoftheUnitedStates,fromthe mid-eighteenthcenturytothestartofthetwenty-firstcentury.Indoingso,students developanunderstandingofthepresentaswellasthepast.Thecourseenables studentstostudyAmericanhistorythroughtheuseoforiginalhistoricalsources, objects,andvisitstosites

StudentscanchoosefromFrench,SpanishorMandarinbasedupontheirprior experiencewiththelanguageofinstruction.Thesecoursesaredesignedfornonnativespeakersandintendedtomeetstudents’learningneedssothattheycontinue toprogressingainingfluencyinthetargetlanguage Studentswillhavemultiple opportunitiestodeveloptheirskillsinthefourcorecompetenciesofspeaking, writing,reading,andlistening.

The Arts (Option 3)

DRAMA

Throughpracticalandtheoreticalstudy,studentsdevelopanunderstandingandenjoymentof drama,developinggroupandindividualskillsandstudyingwaystocommunicateideasand feelingstoanaudience.Theylearnhowtodiscovertheperformancepossibilitiesofatextand otherstimulianddevisedramaticmaterialoftheirown.Studentsalsodeveloptheirperformance skills,thedemonstrationofwhichwillformpartofthefinalassessment.

MUSIC

Thiscourseallowsstudentstodeveloptheirmusicalskillsthroughlistening,performingand composing.

Thecourseallowsstudentsto: studymusicfromadiverserangeofworldculturesandfromhistoricalperiodstothepresent day havetheflexibilitytoperformandcomposeintheirchosenstyle.

VISUAL ARTS

Thiscourseencouragesapersonalresponsebystimulatingimagination,sensitivity,conceptual thinking,powersofobservationandanalyticalability.

COMPUTING

Thiscoursehelpsstudentsdevelopaninterestincomputationalthinkingandan understandingoftheprinciplesofproblem-solvingusingcomputers.Theyapplythis understandingtocreatecomputer-basedsolutionstoproblemsusingalgorithmsand ahigh-levelprogramminglanguage.Studentsalsodeveloparangeoftechnical skills,andtheabilitytoeffectivelytestandevaluatecomputingsolutions.

TheRemoveandFifthFormhealtheducationcurriculumisdevelopedtopromote safeandhealthylifestylechoices.Theexitoutcomesforthiscoursearealignedwith theNewYorkStateGuidanceDocumentandNationalHealthEducationLearning Standards.Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscoursestudentswillpossessan increaseinskillsthatwillhelpthempromotephysical,mentalandsocialwellness. ProvisionforSAT/ACTtestswillstartinFifthFormandstudentsareabletochoose bytheendoftheschoolyearthetesttheywillbebestsuited.InthefallofGrade10, studentsandfamilieswillbeinvitedtoeitheraface-to-facemeetingorwebinarthat introducesthemtotheCollegeCounselingprogramatHarrowNewYork.
