Harrow HK Colours Brochure

Page 1

INTRODUCTION

Harrow Hong Kong is committed to providing a range of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom contributing to our holistic model of education and focus on the personal development of our pupils. It is a core aspect of a Harrovian education.

We aim to encourage our pupils to enjoy music, art, drama and sport and to give back to others through our charity programme. Participation may be competitive or creative but above all we aim to foster a level of participation and engagement which will bring enjoyment and benefit to our pupils’ lives.

In line with our aims, we recognise the need to be inclusive but also celebrate success and excellence. We reward outstanding achievement, participation and dedication and notice when our pupils go above and beyond what is expected.

The pages of this booklet outline the criteria for recognising our pupils’ achievements and commitment via the award of Colours. I hope that you will enjoy reading it and that by doing so you will be encouraged to work towards achieving Colours and will gain a great deal of satisfaction from doing so.

Colours have a long history at schools such as Harrow and were adopted from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge back in 1836 when colours were awarded for representing the university in the Boat Race crew. Cricket, Athletics, Rugby and Football soon followed and a similar system was formalised in schools across the world.

Colours are traditionally indicated by the wearing of a special tie or badge. It is my wish that all our pupils will gain Colours in an area of interest for participation and performance and that they will wear their Colours with pride.

COLOURS PROGRAMME

The award of Half or Full Colours is an impressive achievement for our pupils and is evidence of dedication and commitment in one or more areas of the School. Pupils at Harrow Hong Kong can earn Colours in the following areas:

• Art

• Charity

• Drama

• Music

• Sport

• STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics)

Pupils can earn the following Colours in the above areas:

• Prep Half or Full Colours

• Senior Half or Full Colours

• Sixth Form Half or Full Colours

Our Colours programme takes into consideration a pupil’s academic achievement and progress alongside their engagement in learning, both inside and outside of the classroom. For a pupil to be awarded Half or Full Colours they will need to have shown dedication and commitment to their field as well as demonstrating fully our Harrow values and six Leadership Attributes.

This brochure outlines the philosophy and criteria by which pupils can achieve Half or Full Colours in each of the five areas. Colours will be awarded at the end of each term to those pupils who have fulfilled the criteria and who have been nominated by their teacher or Head of Department for the award.

ART

ART COLOURS

Art Half and Full Colours are awarded to pupils who have consistently excelled in different areas of artistic endeavour and who surpass expectations in the Art classroom. These pupils are actively involved in the Art community within and outside Harrow, where they creatively contribute to the learning and promotion of Art and Design and challenge themselves with a range of art-making approaches.

To achieve Half or Full Colours in Art, pupils must reach the requirements under each area:

• Progress

• Participation

• Leadership

These three areas reflect the pupils’ dedication, enthusiasm, accomplishments and work ethic, as well as the ways in which they exhibit the Harrow values and Leadership Attributes.

CHARITY

CHARITY COLOURS

At Harrow Hong Kong, we aim for pupils to develop a personal spirit of service to others, gain leadership skills and grow into fine young adults with compassion and a sense of social responsibility. This will our pupils to become strong leaders, inspired to take on new challenges and develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation and empathy.

Throughout their time at Harrow, pupils are expected to demonstrate a willingness to give up their time and effort to benefit those who are in need, without expectation of reward or return. To gain Charity colours, pupils should aim to serve the School Charities, whilst developing strong skills of leadership through whole-school initiatives, House-focused events and co-curricular activities. Pupils may identify charity and service activities SCAs and CCAs as ‘Altruistic’ activities. We hope that through these opportunities, pupils will be able to bring about lasting change that reaches far beyond the confines of Harrow Hong Kong itself.

DRAMA

DRAMA COLOURS

Pupils who are awarded Drama Colours show exemplary commitment in both their academic studies and through engaging in a variety of opportunities beyond the classroom.

Drama is a subject that is studied throughout the School. We believe it is important to acknowledge pupils who are consistently recognised as displaying exceptional and excellent performance within their lessons. This is why such achievements are part of the criteria of Drama Colours.

At Harrow, we offer a wide range of co-curricular activities in the Drama Department – including our large-scale productions and musicals, opportunities to develop performance skills through improvisation, physical theatre or stage combat, as well as Dance and Public Speaking training. Many of these can be found in the ‘Artistic’ section of the Harrow Horizons catalogue.

Leadership is an integral quality in Drama, whether it is leading a group in a lesson or running an SCA for younger pupils. Displaying the Harrow values and six Leadership Attributes is key to achieving Colours in Drama.

Through the award of Drama Colours, we recognise pupils for their accomplishments and inspire new generations of Drama pupils at Harrow.

MUSIC

MUSIC COLOURS

Pupils who distinguish themselves in the musical life of the School generally exemplify the following three behaviours: they take part in a range of musical activities and performances; they excel at their chosen instrument or voice; and they make constant progress through commitment, practice and a desire to improve.

In the Music Department, we believe it is important to recognise pupils who demonstrate these three attributes and thereby provide strong leadership for their peers. Pupils may earn Colours through their commitment over a sustained period of time, through their performance within ensembles, though other forms of contribution to music such as making an arrangement for an ensemble, and by sustaining constant improvement in their music-making.

We hope that, as pupils are recognised through the Colours system for their efforts and achievements, they will inspire others to follow in their footsteps, creating a more vibrant musical community.

SPORTS

SPORTS COLOURS

It is important to the Harrow PE Department and the School community that pupils who dedicate themselves to participation and performance across a variety of Harrow sports teams are recognised for their hard work, ability and commitment. The philosophy within the PE department is for pupils to grow and flourish in an environment that develops the young athletes. Through all forms of the PE and Sport curriculum, pupils will develop transferable skills that allow them to participate in multiple Harrow sporting teams. This further develops our competitive program and allows elite performers to move forward with their sporting careers.

It is also important to recognise that students commit to a multitude of sports external to the School, often with a significant time commitment. For those pupils performing at a national age group level (or equivalent) this may count towards the sporting criteria.

We are looking for pupils who are committed to all aspects of the Harrow Hong Kong sporting community and whose attitude is proactive, positive and fully behind the continual growth of the Harrow Hong Kong sports program.

To be awarded Full Colours in Sport, a pupil must demonstrate exceptional commitment, performance and leadership. Full Colours can only be awarded in Year 8, Year 11 and Year 13.

Pupils who meet the criteria to achieve multiple Full Colours Awards may be awarded an exceptional Elite Colours Award, which recognises their commitment, performance and leadership across different sports. Elite Colours Awards can only be awarded in Year 8, Year 11 and Year 13.
