The History Of Harrisville Designs Nestled into the Monadnock Highlands of New Hampshire is the tiny brick mill village of Harrisville, where yarn has been spun since 1794. Water power attracted settlers to various remote locations in New Hampshire beginning in the late 19th century. The Harris family built many of the original mill buildings and houses for their family and workers. In the mid-1800’s the Colony family bought out the Harris holdings and created Cheshire Mills. The last woolen mill in Harrisville closed in 1970 when the fashion world turned, temporarily, to synthetic double-knit fabrics. When that business closed its doors John J. Colony III formed a nonprofit organization called Historic Harrisville, Inc., which immediately purchased several of the core buildings to restore and lease out to businesses. He quickly realized that as the mill buildings were being cleared out and machinery was being destroyed and sold for scrap metal that textiles would be completely erased from the village. He started Harrisville Designs in 1971 to keep the textile tradition alive and to create jobs in Harrisville for the economic vitality of the town, leasing space from Historic Harrisville to give that organization income to help keep it viable. John and Pat Colony grew up in Harrisville; they raised their three sons here and two of them have come back to help with the business,so the tradition continues. Harrisville Designs is a family-owned business maintaing a 200-year textile tradition.

Our Process At Harrisville Designs, we begin with 100% Virgin Wool which is carded and spun into a variety of distinctive yarns. The unique look of Harrisville Designs yarns is the result of great care and attention to detail every step of the way throughout the spinning process. Merino Cross wools from New Zealand have always been used, and more recently we have introduced a much softer wool from Australia to create a better “hand for knitters. The fleece is dyed in the wool to maximize brightness and fastness of color; to create the beautiful heather mixes which distinguish our yarns, several colors are carefully selected and blended together. Each combination is specifically chosen to achieve ideal combinations to give the yarn depth and interest without sacrificing brightness or variation.
