Harrison County, WV consistently offers one of the lowest costs of living in the eastern United States, notably cheaper than nearly all counties in the Northeast, mid- Atlantic, and major metro coastal areas.
Only a handful of rural Southern and Appalachian counties compare for affordability, particularly in housing and essential expenses.
Significantly lower housing, grocery, and healthcare costs.
Notable exception: transportation can be moderately higher, but still below many urban counties.
This makes Harrison County a standout for affordability among eastern U.S. counties
The cost of living index for West Virginia is 88.6 for the first quarter of 2025, with 100 representing the U.S. national average; this means living in West Virginia costs about 11.4% less than the average U.S. location
Harrison County's largest city, Clarksburg, consistently ranks below both the national and state averages, with multiple sources estimating living costs in Clarksburg (and thus Harrison County) are approximately 16–18% lower than the state or national averages
Housing:
Housing remains affordable compared to most U.S. locations, despite being 3% higher than the national average. Rent for an average apartment is around $1,262/month, and home prices are considerably more affordable than in most metropolitan U.S. areas
Healthcare:
Healthcare in Harrison County is about 17% less expensive than the national average. Doctor and dental visits, as well as prescription drug prices, are notably lower, making overall medical care more affordable for residents
