Congratulations, Simply the Best Winners
You hold in your hands Harrisburg Magazine’s largest edition of the year, bursting with the results of our annual Simply the Best and Readers’ Choice effort that celebrates business excellence throughout Central Pennsylvania.
For 27 years, our readers have looked forward to the contest to show support for their favorite local businesses, organizations, individuals and attractions. This time around, they spoke loud and clear. We received a record number of votes – more than 100,000 ballots cast, in total. We’re proud to host the program that applauds the places and people that make this region exceptional.
The contest is fundamentally about recognizing and supporting great local institutions by raising their profile and helping them gain new clientele. The initiative helps to bolster the visibility of those businesses and organizations that use it to reach out to new and existing customers to ask for their support, through advertising and through their own channels.
Inside this issue you will find com-
plete lists of the winners chosen as Simply the Best and as Readers’ Choice for 2024. We congratulate all of them. Here’s to continued prosperity!
We are currently putting the finishing touches on our annual Simply the Best Gala, where the best of the best gather for a night of recognition, celebration, networking, great food and drink, and entertainment. This year’s gala, with the circus theme of “A Night Under the Big Top,” is slated for Aug. 29 at the Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center in Camp Hill. Tickets are available at stbvote.com/tickets.
Tom Russell, chief meteorologist for WHP CBS 21, will be the emcee and “ringmaster” for the night. Local personality Nancy Ryan also will be on hand to help guide the festivities as “the lion tamer.” A crew from CBS will air a live feed from the gala.
Prepare to come hungry, because some of the best local restaurants will serve up diverse types of delicious cuisine for those attending. A cash bar will be offered, as well. Live music, delivered by the talented Smooth
Like Clyde, will have the crowd in the main ballroom moving and grooving to their danceable, eclectic sounds. Amy Simpson profiles the band this month in her After the Beat column. In addition, Mixed-Up Productions will provide the soundtrack in the auxiliary ballroom. The Lower Paxton Variety Band will perform outside, as well.
Of special note is the annual silent auction to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Pennsylvania, held in partnership with Harrisburg Magazine. Read all about the longstanding efforts of organizer Kathy Krone to fight blood cancer inside this edition.
Staff members at the magazine have been telling clients and friends to “prepare to be astonished” by what promises to be a memorable night of celebration.
As always, I encourage you to send in your story tips and ideas. Just email them to eebeling@harrisburgmagazine.com.
See you at the gala!

Linda Johnston is the very public face of Renewal by Andersen of Central Pennsylvania, the window and door replacement company based in Hampden Township. The award-winning businesswoman is well-known for television commercials that spotlight Andersen’s products, and her philanthropic work in the community has garnered her accolades. Johnston recently sat down with Eric Ebeling, editorial director of Harrisburg Magazine, at her Carlisle Pike headquarters to discuss her three-decade career in the industry.
Eric Ebeling: I’ve seen you referred to as both general manager and chief cultural officer at Renewal. Can you explain what that means?
Linda Johnston: I was the general manager from 2010 until last year. In some of our TV commercials, I continue to use that because the title “chief culture officer,” to me, sounds a little bougie and very different. So, we just left “general manager,” even though I no longer have that title. Through the growth of the business over the years, my job became almost three jobs. I was still the acting marketing director, the general manager, and I was fo-
cused on the community and culture and everything like that. We made the decision last year to break out my job, and we hired a marketing director and a new general manager, and I was promoted to chief culture officer, still very involved in the business. I grew up in the business through marketing, so that is my strength. I still keep my finger on the pulse of all of that, but I now have the time to really focus on our community, and through our Renewal Cares initiative, it is so important to everybody on our team to really help uplift the Central Pennsylvania community. We live here, we work here, we’re raising our families here. We want to do everything we can to make Central Pennsylvania better every day than it was yesterday.
EE: As far as culture goes, are you talking about company culture or the culture outside the front door of here?
LJ: Our mission statement of the company is to provide a world-class customer experience through highend, exclusive home improvement solutions, while showing gratitude to our customers who entrust us with
their homes. In order to fulfill providing a world-class customer experience, we have to provide a world-class employee experience. I work really closely with human resources some days, closer than I want to, you know, to make sure from the moment an applicant comes in for their job interview – for their their follow-up, for their offer – what happens from their offer to when they start for training. What does their first day look like? What does their onboarding look like? We really focus on making sure we integrate who we are right away with new employees. With our current employees, we have our core values. And they’ve been our core values for many, many years. You know, it’s passion, integrity. I’ll give you a copy of them then before you leave, so I don’t have to name them all, but my favorite one is “be extraordinary.” The first line of that is, “You don’t have to be crazy to work here, but it helps.” And we live that every day, and you can feel it when you walk in the call center. You hear the music playing, and people are talking to each other and laughing with each other, things like that. That’s the kind of vibe we want to create here. You know, we spend more time with each other than we do with our families on a daily basis.
EE: How many employees does the company have?
LJ: We have about 350 employees. Renewal by Andersen of Central Pennsylvania is an independently owned and operated affiliate of Renewal by Andersen. We have three locations that make up our Central Pennsylvania territory. It’s our headquarters here in Mechanicsburg, and then we have offices in Altoona and in Williamsport. Our three offices pretty much cover the whole square of Central Pennsylvania, from the Maryland line to the New York border.
EE: I know you have an interesting backstory here. Is it true that you started working for this company part time, 30-some years ago?
LJ: Yes, it is. I was working in banking. I thought I was going to be a banker the rest of my life, and it was the beginning of December, and I needed extra money for Christmas. I ran into somebody I knew, and I started as a part-time call center rep (for Renewal By Andersen). I worked evenings, five to nine, and, you know,
I kind of fell in love with the business. Then I got to meet the owner, Joe Zisman, one night, and he started talking to me about coming to work full time. That was scary when you’re working for a big bank versus a little home improvement company. But ultimately, he convinced me to come on as the full-time call center manager, and then I was the event manager. I was in that position for quite a few years. Then I was the event manager running our outside events, home shows, wine expos, festivals, things like that. Then I was the marketing director, and then the general manager. So that was my path through it. I have loved, loved, loved, every step of the way.
EE: I have read that mentoring on the job is very important to you. Can you talk about that for a bit?
LJ: I think no matter what business you work in, finding mentors and being a mentor is important to all of us. Being in the construction industry for 30-plus years, I remember going to national meetings and being the only female there. Something that has really been my passion is developing women in our business. Now, when
I sit at managers’ meetings that we do monthly, there’s eight females on our management team in addition to the 10 males. That’s really, really exciting to see, compared to 15 years ago when there was zero. It’s about building your legacy. I talk to our employees about that all the time, as our roles change and we grow into bigger positions. It’s passing down all that tribal knowledge to the people who are walking in our footsteps in the business.
EE: Could you give readers details about the Renewal Cares initiative?
EE: Joe, the owner of our location, has been passionate his entire career. He has always wanted to give back to our community, and over the past five or six years, we finally were able to tag a logo and a name to it. Renewal Cares shows that we care about the communities that we’re in, not only here in central Pennsylvania, but all across the country. And it’s really just uplifting those in our communities that we can help. It’s not always about how big the check is. It could be about how many hours of volunteerism we give. How can we teach them skills that they don’t have through a junior
certified master installer program that we’ve started with high school kids? It’s featuring them in different things we do using our marketing voice to share their message and create awareness.
EE: Would you name some of the charities the company supports?
LJ: Sure. American Cancer Society, Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association, Big 33, Peyton Walker Foundation, All You Can Inc., CASA, the Alex W. Smith Foundation, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Veteran’s Outreach of Pennsylvania, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, YWCA.
EE: How has the public’s concern over saving energy changed from when you first started in the industry?
LJ: I don’t think it has. I think when people are looking to make upgrades such as windows and doors in their home, it’s always been one of their biggest hot buttons. One of their biggest wants, desires is more energy-efficient windows. Typically, one of the reasons you’re going to replace your windows is because the one beside the chair you sit in makes you freeze in the winter because drafts are coming in.
EE: Do you have a busiest time of year for installations?
LJ: December may be a little slower than March, but we stay pretty busy year-round. We don’t market any differently in January than we do in July. We do it year-round, no matter what, and most of our installations are done in a day.
EE: Could you walk me through what the process is like for a customer who wants to purchase new windows?
LJ: So typically, either a customer’s going to contact us, or we’re going to see them out at a show or an event. We’re going to schedule an appointment for one of our design consultants to come out. They’re going to do a full window inspection and really identify which windows are in the most need of replacement, and then they’re going to give you a price right down to the penny. That’s good for one year, if you do decide to purchase at that time, typically it’s about six to eight weeks when we’ll be back out to install your windows. It’s going to get done in one day, and then you’re going to have your beautiful, energy-efficient windows and doors for many, many years to come.
EE: That was quick and concise. I’m impressed. I have to say that I’ve seen you on TV so much, I feel like I already kind of know you. Were you always good at public speaking, or is this something you’ve had to work at?
LJ: I don’t say I’m good at it. I do it. It was just a natural progression. All of a sudden, one day, I had to start doing these TV commercials. And then it kept going. I never woke up one day and said, “I want to start speaking on stages.” Through some of our sponsorships, organizers will say, “You’re the sponsor. We’d like you to talk for two minutes.” Okay, yeah, I’ve been doing that for years.
EE: Do you ever get tired of being recognized out in the public, now that you have achieved a kind of celebrity
status?
LJ: I always say, “I just work there.” You know, are there days that I don’t want to put makeup on because I’m running to the grocery store? Yes, it is true, but it’s awesome that so many customers out in the public come up and tell me they love their new windows and doors. It gives me the opportunity to let them know how grateful that we are that they trust their home to our team.
EE: Do you have a secret to staying up on industry trends and next big things in the building industry? It has to be evolving quickly, right?
LJ: Like any industry, things move fast, yeah. Being part of the Renewal by Andersen network is really such a blessing. There are about 100 affiliates just like us across the country. Being able to share best practices with the next rest of the network is really a benefit. Being part of the Andersen Corporation and having that support is huge for Renewal by Andersen, being the replacement window division. We saw one of the huge benefits during Covid, when supply chains really got broken and everything like that. Having the Andersen Corporation behind us really helped us out. So, when it comes to trends and things like that and research and development, that really gives us an advantage.
EE: Do you mind talking about your family?
LJ: Not at all. I am the baby of five, and really had fantastic parents who taught us things like work ethic and
how to go after your dreams and be who you are. I have a brother and three sisters, and we enjoy each other’s company a lot, which I’m so thankful for. I have a newly 18-yearold son, Danny. He is the joy of my life.
EE: Are you from around here?
LJ: I grew up in the Linglestown area. Went to Holy Name and Bishop McDevitt. So, I’ve lived here my whole life. Military family. My dad was a retired lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, then went on to work for the state. That’s what brought us. I was born outside of Philadelphia, but I wasn’t even there long enough for it to count. I’ve been here most of my life.
EE: There is a motto that I’ve seen attached to you. Do you know what I’m referring to?
LJ: Yes. “Find a job that you love to do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” We have our mission, our core values and our purpose. Our purpose is to make people happy. That doesn’t matter if it’s our employees, our customers, our vendors, our community, just anybody we come in contact with. I have started to ingrain that statement myself and to be the reason somebody smiles today. It’s easy to do: Hold the door open for them, smile at them. It takes little to no effort to make somebody smile, and it can change the trajectory of somebody’s day.
LJ: Well, there’s no rinse and repeat in my life. There really isn’t, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’ll be playing block and tackle some days or just whatever the business needs are of the given day, with a plan, obviously. But you have to be flexible enough to roll with the punches. I think that’s one of the many reasons I love my job. It’s never boring because every day is different. Some days are harder than others, you know, but all together, it’s awesome.
EE: Are you doing the work now that you’re happiest with?
LJ: We have to make up our mind if we love what we’re doing or we don’t. And it’s a lot easier to come to work every day when you love what you’re doing and, you know, spreading smiles with the team. This business has given us the opportunity to really see employees’ lives change. You know, we have employees that rode the bus to work when they first got here, then we see them buy their first car, and then they buy their first house, and then they get married. It’s so rewarding to watch that. In addition, it’s helping our customers and helping change their lives, making their home more beautiful, more energy efficient. We’re changing our team’s lives, too. And then the third piece is our community, changing lives in our community, as well.
EE: Could you walk me through what an average day at work is like for you?
Specialty Drink Truck Sets The Bar High
By Eric Ebeling, eebeling@harrisburgmagazine.com
Call it a case of being in the right place at the right time. Or perhaps a bit of divine inspiration came into play. Or maybe her tenacity and hard work made the difference.
Whatever the case, Quinn Barr struck gold with an idea three years ago to open a high-end specialty drink truck in the Harrisburg area that serves up taste – beverages, locally sourced food and handmade baked goods – on the go.
She credits her mother, Christine Stocklos, with planting the seed that grew into her bourgeoning business.
“My mom watches ‘Shark Tank,’ and she told me, ‘Look, food trucks are going to be the new big thing. Why don’t you take what you know’ – I have some background as a barista – ‘and just build a coffee business,’” Barr said.
She was an early adopter here in Central Pennsylvania. When she first rolled out her truck to awaiting customers, she was among only a handful of
similar enterprises.
“When I was researching opening a coffee food truck, there was literally one other coffee truck in the area. Then another competitor … opened the same time I did. So, there were three coffee trucks in the area,” Barr said. “In the last year, and this is no exaggeration, there are 32 coffee trailers and/or trucks that have opened. I’m one of the original coffee food trucks. I’ll say it just that way. One of the originals.”
Barr said she wanted to put a unique
twist on the food truck experience by partnering with reputable, local businesses to stock her inventory.
“I wanted to use all local purveyors, businesses that have been established for anywhere from 25 to 30 years or more,” she said. “There’s Ressler’s Bagels (Mechanicsburg), they just hit their 30-year mark in June. St. Thomas Roasters (Linglestown), I believe, has been in business 24 years. I use their beans and their coffee. I have Rosemary House & Gardens (Mechanicsburg) for my tea. I want to say they’ve been in business for like 50 years. So, I use her hot teas, and I can make iced tea as well on my truck.”
A Central Pennsylvania native, Barr was born and raised in Linglestown and lives in Wormleysburg.
The only product she uses that isn’t local is Utah-based Lotus Energy Drinks. Because of their quality, Barr said, she wanted to promote them here.
Her background in food service and as a restaurant entrepreneur, and as an artist for 30 years in floral design, helped her hone her business acumen and her eye for the perfect drink.
farmers markets, fundraisers, weddings and parties, and at larger businesses at the start of the workday. She said she is already preparing for the 2024 Kipona Festival, set for Aug. 31 through Sept. 1 in Harrisburg.
“I’m up thinking about drinks and concocting things in my head at two and three o’clock in the morning. It’s just a love and a passion of mine. I love to come up with drink flavors and concoctions, and I absolutely feel joy when I give a drink to somebody, and they take a sip of it and they have the biggest smile on their face. That’s why I do what I do.”
Exhibit A: Her Barbie Pink Drink timed with the release of the blockbuster film last year. It remains one of her most popular items.
She also offers homemade baklava from a recipe that has been in her family for 30 years, as well as a variety of muffins. Her menu includes hot and iced coffees, cappuccino, frappes, smoothies, lemonade and handcrafted energy drinks.
Barr recently served up some of her specialties during a lunchtime stop at the offices of Harrisburg Magazine. Staff members were unanimous in their praise of the taste and quality of the drinks, muffins and bagels they sampled.
Barr’s coffee truck is a familiar sight at fairs, festivals, carnivals, car shows,
Barr said she is contemplating adding a second truck to her fleet or expanding into a brickand-mortar location in the future. Stay tuned.

Some Local Business Owners Preserve History –One Building at a Time
Ihope you’re enjoying this annual Simply the Best edition of Harrisburg Magazine. Congratulations to the category winners!
Business owners fight every day to make ends meet and make a difference in the lives of their customers and their team members. I know the fight firsthand; I’ve been a small business owner since the mid-1990s, when I opened a consulting firm to help business owners improve customer experience.
Now, as a Realtor, I enjoy highlighting these local rock stars around us. They are the backbone of our economy; small businesses create approximately two out of every three new jobs in the United States.
Today, I’m blending two personal interests—real estate and small business—as I share with you a few stories of commercial reclamation locally.
The Mill, Hershey
Jody and Jim Rafferty own and run The Mill in Hershey, a scratch kitchen at 810 Old W. Chocolate Ave. This 166-year-old building was originally a feed mill acquired by Paul Curry in the late 1800s.
years, from the early 1970s until 2012. In the early 2010s, restauranters Jim and Jody Rafferty were looking for a freestanding structure — something with character — to start a new scratch kitchen concept in the Hershey area. One day Jim and his cousin were eating lunch in an old textile mill in Maryland and wondered if anything like this existed in Hershey. Jim remembered the old Curry Mill. They bought the abandoned building in 2012 and remodeled it for two years, leaving the large wood beams and stone walls and creating a unique three-story dining experience.
Rising Sun, Campbelltown
The building at 2850 Horseshoe Pike, Campbelltown, has been home to a tavern or bar for more than 200 years! And since 1890, it has held some version of the name Rising Sun. It has also changed hands more than a dozen times. During the 1940s Ethel Singer ran the place. In the heat of World War II, she was asked to remove the sign from the hotel; the sign depicted an orange sun rising over a hill with the words “Rising Sun Hotel,” deemed offensive for its uncanny resemblance to the Japanese flag and nickname.
Current owner Alan Funck remodeled the restaurant several years ago. Then recently, he revamped an old apartment building next door, gutting the apartments, creating a high-ceilinged structure, and saving much of the original wood and brick from the building. The bottom portion of the original northern wall of the apartments remains as a stone fence, separating Rising Sun’s west parking lot from the sidewalk along 322.
Extraction Plant at the rear of 505 W. Chocolate Ave. This building housed the equipment to turn cocoa shells into cocoa butter soap and cocoa mulch and is now sprawling restaurant and largest producer of Pennsylvania craft straight bourbon whiskey.
Through the remodel, Stein created a vibe called “rustic industrial,” an unfinished look combining historical charm and modern design. Their building won the 2022 Hershey Derry Township History Center Preservation Award.
The old brick walls, rugged wood and metal of these buildings carry our history and connect us to the past. We feel good inside of them. The caretakers — the owners — care deeply about their businesses and community. Let’s remember the dedication and passion they pour into their craft. And when renovations are involved, they do their best to preserve our past and embrace the future — one building, one story at a time.
According to Millpictures.com, in 1903, Curry sold his mill to Milton S. Hershey. Hershey needed the water rights for his chocolate factory.

Hidden Still owner David Stein moved his distillery from Lebanon to Hershey by reclaiming the old Hershey

‘Gift Matching’ Makes a Perfect Life Hack for Education Savings
In August, Pappy would call to let me know when he was picking me up to go back-to-school shopping with my two cousins. Every year, Nanny and Pappy would buy their grandchildren an outfit of their choosing for the first day of school. I would have my clothes picked out within five minutes of entering Sears, but my two older cousins would be back in the fitting room trying on myriad jeans and blouse combinations. As Nanny would critique their outfits, Pappy would sneak me out to the food court to chat. Once I reached high school, he started sharing how they had been saving for their grandchildren’s education. Let’s explore some ideas for education savings!
Gift Matching
Every time Nanny or Pappy purchased a birthday or Christmas present, they would match the gift value to a savings account. Pappy coined this term as “gift matching.” While my wife and I have a specific target for our daughter’s college savings, we also employ Pappy’s gifting matching strategy as an additional bonus savings. Whenever we purchase a present for my daughter, we add funds to her savings account.
Savings ratio
Pappy had a 75:25 rule. This ratio will look different based on your unique financial circumstances and objectives. Creating a financial plan
will help you define an appropriate savings ratio. Pappy’s college savings allocation was broken down into two components. He allocated 75 percent of his savings to a traditional education savings account; these funds were earmarked for tuition, room, and board. For tax purposes, he selected a 529 College Savings Plan, which allows education funds to grow tax-deferred, and the funds are not taxed upon withdrawal as long as the funds are used for qualified education expenses.
For the remaining 25 percent, he purchased savings bonds. These funds were targeted for “additional” college expenses. As a practical example, I used a portion of the savings bonds to buy textbooks. My youngest cousin purchased items for nursing school, such as a stethoscope and additional scrubs. Alternatively, my eldest cousin saved funds for post-graduation when she was taking a series of licensing exams to get professional credentialing.
Use Education Savings as an Education Moment
As we shared fries in the mall’s food court, Pappy outlined the importance of having an emergency fund and saving early. He shared that because he saved for his retirement, he was in the fortunate position to play a part in helping his grandchildren complete a college degree. Growing up, finance was a common topic. My father is a retired financial advisor.
But to this day, I still recall Pappy using education savings as a way to educate me on finances.

Scratching Posts Can Save Your Furniture and Your Sanity
Cats need to scratch but they don’t do it to be destructive, as some people believe. For a feline, scratching is a typical behavior and physiologically necessary. It helps cats keep their claws in motion and stretch their body.
Cats typically have 18 claws, unless they are polydactyl, which means they have extra toes due to a genetic mutation. They have five each on the front paws and four each on the back paws, directly attached to the last bone of the toe. The dewclaw is positioned like a thumb in a human and is on the inside of their front paws. These claws help with climbing and holding onto prey.
Cats have a whole system of specialized muscles, ligaments and tendons inside of their paws that help them to climb, scratch, dig, walk, balance, defend themselves and clutch down on prey. A cat’s front claws are typically sharper than the ones on their hind paws. Their front claws are used to grab prey or help them climb vertical surfaces. The hind claws are more for propelling them forward, jumping and bunny kicking.
Just like human nails and hair, cat claws are made of keratin and continue to grow. The outside of the nail eventually dies off, and a claw sheath is shed to reveal the new nail underneath. This is one reason they like to scratch on scratching posts (or your favorite chair). Scratching enables the external layers to shed.
If your cat has a scratching post, they will be less likely to scratch your furniture. The more cat-approved scratching places you provide, the less likely your cat will scratch elsewhere. Place a post near the furniture that they tend to scratch the most. Invest in a few other posts and put them in the areas where your cat frequents. Scratching posts can be vertical or horizontal but long enough for your cat to stretch out fully while scratching. The scratching posts must be stable. If they wobble, it can scare the cat back to the furniture.
While transitioning cats to scratch-
Simply the Best Gala Auction to benefit lives touched by blood cancer
By Eric Ebeling eebeling@harrisburgmagazine.com
For the past three decades, Kathy Krone has been on a personal fundraising mission to help eradicate blood cancer.
Her efforts organizing an annual silent auction to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Pennsylvania has taken on a poignant new meaning this year. She lost the love of her life, husband Steve, on July 23 to the same type of cancer she has fought against.
In partnership with Harrisburg Magazine, the silent auction will be held during the annual Simply the Best Gala on Aug. 29 at the Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center. Tickets are available at stbvote.com/ tickets.
Krone said Simply the Best winners and friends of the leukemia society have joined forces to organize a fundraiser brimming with high-quality and unique items that will be up for bid. Original artwork; historic Harrisburg items; designer purses; fine jewelry; Tiffany-style lamps; sports items, including seats from Veterans Stadium autographed by Eagles players of the past; gift certificates and more will be displayed in person at the gala and online at LaneRyanAuctions.com. All donations support local patients and research that improves survival rates here and around the globe, Krone said.
As an incentive this year, anyone who registers for the auction will be entered into a drawing to win a spectacular white gold and diamond pendant valued at $2,000. Participants
need not be present to win.
“You don’t have to spend 20 or 30 bucks for a raffle ticket,” she said. “We are just giving this away.”
Registering to bid online at the auction site isn’t complicated, either.
“It’s user friendly. You just click on ‘auctions,’ and then you can scroll down by date to find the gala auction,” she said.
Registration is also available in person at the event.
“There will be a huge display in the lobby of the Penn Harris with all of the merchandise, and there will be young women helpers to get people signed up on their phones,” Krone said. “It works really well. The young people have no problem with it. Older people, you know, want to participate. So, I say, ‘Hand over your phone, and the young people will set it up for you.’ Then you can go and have your party.”
Planning the fundraiser and acquiring all the items is a year-round effort for Krone. She said a dedicated core of volunteers, some of them co-workers at the law firm Smigel, Anderson and Sacks on Front Street in Harrisburg, provide valuable assistance.
The law firm has been a stalwart ally in the fight against leukemia for more than 30 years, said Krone, who is the longtime office manager.
“Lee Smigel and Stuart Sacks are wonderful human beings,” she said. “Early on, I said to them, ‘You know. I want to do this charity stuff. You can structure my compensation any way
you want, but I’m going to do it now.’ It helps that I’m a workaholic, so that nothing gets short-changed. And it worked to the firm’s advantage, because if you are out in the world and you do a good job on something, then they figure, if they come here with their legal problems, we’re going to do a good job – which we do.”
The leukemia society’s first comprehensive charity event was a black-tie dinner in 1987, around the same time
Krone’s husband was diagnosed with colon cancer. He received a second cancer diagnosis about five years later. More recently, he had developed blood cancer.
After several years, the dinner assumed the theme Summer Solstice in the early 1990s, and it grew into a fundraiser of considerable proportion.
“After doing the Summer Solstice for all those years, it’s hard to stop,” said Krone. “This is a much more scaled down thing that I can do now, but I can’t give it up. When you do something for such a long time and you do a good job at it, people really trust you. So, the bonus is that people give me things to sell because they know that every penny that I make goes to the charity.”
To date, the work of Krone and her fellow volunteers has raised nearly $6 million locally.
Most blood cancers, also called hematologic cancers, start in the bone marrow, where blood cells are produced, according to information provided by the leukemia society. Blood cancers occur when abnormal blood cells grow out of control, interfering with the function of normal blood cells, which fight off infection and produce new blood cells.
The three main types of blood and bone marrow cancer are leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Leukemia is a blood cancer that originates in the blood and bone marrow. It occurs when the body creates too many abnormal white blood cells and interferes with the bone marrow’s ability to make red blood cells and platelets.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system from cells called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that helps
the body fight infections.
Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that develops in the lymphatic system from cells called lymphocytes. Hodgkin lymphoma is characterized by the presence of an abnormal lymphocyte called the Reed-Sternberg cell.
Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that begins in the blood’s plasma cells, a type of white blood cell made in the bone marrow.
More information about blood cancer, including resources for patients, caregivers, researchers and health care professionals, can be found at www.lls.org.
“Cancer can strike anyone at any time. Here’s your opportunity to share your good fortune in Simply the Best 2024 by purchasing items in the auction,” she said. “By doing so, you will be purchasing hope in a brighter future for all of us.”

Classic Hits, Fresh Twists
The air is charged with anticipation as the band takes the stage, prepared to deliver a performance that will leave a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
Excitement mounts for a memorable night of music and entertainment courtesy of Smooth Like Clyde. Whether at the casino, a nightclub or private venue, the band delivers a show filled with extraordinary skill, infectious energy and unwavering passion. The group has crafted an experience over the last 17 years that goes over and above and deeply connects with all who join in on Clyde’s musical journey.
Fronting the band is Tyrone “Tye” King, a vocal dynamo with an impressive résumé that includes collaborations with acclaimed groups The Collective and Trylogy. His author-
itative vocals, coupled with the musical talents of Chris Guerrisi on lead vocals and rhythm guitar (Something Fluid); Kevin “KB” Brennan on lead guitar (Creamsicle, Empty Pockets); Kevin “Kev” Askins as musical director and bassist; and Ross Sackler (Cherry Twister) and Paul “Cutty” Goodwyn (Trylogy) splitting duty on the drums. Guerrisi, Askins and Sackler founded the band, and Brennan and King joined the group two years later.
This talented collective fuses classic rap and DJ elements into their own distinctive cover band approach, giving them a unique presence in the Central Pennsylvania music scene. The band’s name encapsulates the essence of their music: Smooth.
They present a lively and varied musical catalog on stage, drawing influence from iconic musicians such as Ludacris, Usher, Pitbull and Prince. Their shows skillfully merge silky R&B tunes with lively rap rhythms, designed to spark the crowd and inspire movement. Every band member brings their individual skills, whether it’s intricate guitar riffs, funky bass grooves or solid drum patterns, culminating in a sound that is enthralling and energizing.
As the final notes of the evening reverberate through the venue and the crowd erupts into cheers and applause, it is evident that Smooth Like Clyde has accom-
plished their goal of taking listeners on a musical journey. Reimagining classics, redefining beats, Smooth Like Clyde pays homage to the legends while making the old new again.
“We breathe new life into the old school classics, hoping everyone in the crowd has as much fun as we do on stage,” said Guerrisi.
The band has garnered prestigious honors such as multiple Readers’ Choice and Simply the Best awards from Harrisburg Magazine, Best of Harrisburg 2019 by Susquehanna Style, as well as distinctions like Best Cover Band from The Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame in 2019, in addition to annual nominations. They will provide the live entertainment at Harrisburg Magazine’s Simply the Best Gala on Aug. 29 at the Penn Harris Hotel and Convention Center in Camp Hill.
You can catch the group at the Hollywood Casino, Grantville, on Aug. 23, and at the Harrisburg Beach Club on City Island on Sept. 7.
For booking information, call (717) 926-7887 or visit SmoothLikeClyde. com.
