HarperCollins UK International Highlights

Page 1

Dear booksellers,

Once more, HarperCollins UK has seen some incredible successes over the last few months, from Coco Mellors’ wonderful Blue Sisters (an LBF spotlight), to Butter, an extraordinary culinary why-dunnit from Asako Yuzuki, to the romantasy sensation from Sarah A. Parker When the Moon Hatched. Bella Mackie’s new novel What a Way to Go is now out in the world, George R. R. Martin is back on the small screen with the second series of House of the Dragon and we’re looking forward to the latest cinematic adventure from one of our favourite bears in Paddington in Peru.

Looking further forward, in non-fiction, the first volume of Cher’s memoir will be one of the most revelatory stories of the autumn. We’re delighted to be bringing you the first book from Sahil Bloom, whose The 5 Types of Wealth points the way to spiritual enrichment. We will bring you the story of Sonny Vaccaro, the man who discovered Michael Jordan for Nike, and introduce you to The Dose Effect, TJ Power’s incredible and innovative user guide to the chemistry of our brains.

Riding the wave of romantasy that has swept across bestseller lists all over the world, Voyager, Magpie, Harper Fire and Electric Monkey bring you an impressive roster of writers, with this season seeing new books from Tahereh Mafi, Rebecca Ross, Saara El-Arifi, Amélie Wen Zhao, Taran Matharu, Hannah Kaner, Kristen Ciccarelli and Thea Guanzon, as well as long-term stalwarts of the Voyager list Mark Lawrence and Peter V. Brett.

Upcoming blockbuster brands include Daniel Silva, Cathy Kelly, Jeffery Deaver, Karin Slaughter, and Nita Prose, with Molly the Maid’s third adventure. We are also beyond excited about Hercule Poirot’s Silent Night, the ultimate in festive comfort from the pen of Sophie Hannah, not to mention an exclusive new edition of probably the best-known and bestselling crime novel of them all…

Our children’s imprints lead off with David Walliams, Sarah Wishart, Soman Chainani’s spectacular new novel Coven and more Murray and Bun from the brilliant Adam Stower. We have a young readers’ edition of Philippa Gregory’s brilliant Normal Women. And we celebrate landmark anniversaries for John Green’s Looking for Alaska, and A. A. Milne’s When We Were Very Young. To cap it all, fresh from her first Netflix outing, we have the paperback of Holly Jackson’s latest thriller, The Reappearance of Rachel Price.

Enjoy the fair, and, to those not attending in person, we look forward to seeing you soon.

SARAH HARMAN

I’ve always loved stories of women behaving badly, but those characters are rarely mothers.”
SARAH HARMAN INTRODUCES ALL THE OTHER MOTHERS HATE ME

At thirty-one, Florence Grimes is washed-up. After the humiliating implosion of her girlband career, she’s slumming it in Shepherd’s Bush, hawking balloon arrangements to the Rich Mums of Holland Park and picking petty fights at the gates of her son’s stodgy private school (paid for by her ex-husband, who dumped her for her bandmate).

Then one day her son’s nemesis, the ten-year-old heir to a frozen-dinner fortune, mysteriously vanishes on a school trip, and Florence is forced to interrupt her decadelong pity-party to try to find him. Not because she particularly cares what happened to Alfie Risby (she doesn’t) but because her own son—a sensitive, misunderstood loner—is rapidly becoming the prime suspect.

With the help of a high-strung lawyer named Jenny, Florence begins to unravel the mystery behind Alfie’s disappearance, forging an unlikely friendship in the process. But when she finds the missing boy’s backpack hidden under her own son’s bed, she’s forced to decide just how far she’ll go to protect her own child.

I’ve always loved stories of women behaving badly: Fleabag. Young Adult. Bad Teacher. But those characters are rarely mothers. Mother are too often depicted as

weak, soft, weepy. Long-suffering and selfabnegating. I was really drawn to the idea of a woman whose incredible love for her child makes her fiercer, sharper, spikier. More willing to break rules. In Florence I found a protagonist who is by equal turns furious and infuriating.

The setting was shaped by my own experience as an American trying to wrap my head around the frankly bonkers world of West London private schools (three-hour entrance exams for six-year-olds?!) There’s a lot of comedy to be found in the constant, low-level parental anxiety circulating in those waters. It’s like they say: once you’re rich, all your problems are existential.

As a first-time author, I had no idea if was possible to write a funny story about a missing child. Or a mystery featuring a ‘detective’ whose main interests are reality TV and nail art. Or a novel about mother-love that’s not a gag-inducing, clichéfilled cheese fest. But I really wanted to try.

Holly BRICKLEY

Deep Cuts

The first time Joe plays Percy one of his songs in his college room in 2000, she instantly realises three things:

One, she is watching a star in the making.

Two, she can shape his music into something extraordinary. Three, she will always be on the sidelines.

She swallows her jealousy and throws herself into collaboration, transforming

Joe’s songs into indie hits. But there’s an undercurrent to their music – something undeniably electric, hurtling towards love. And then, almost inevitably, towards heartbreak.

As Joe steps into the spotlight, can Percy bear to watch on in silence? And can he exist there without her?

This a story about passion and obsession, love and longing and, above all, our need to be heard.

HOLLY BRICKLEY

I hope you experience the joy and freedom I felt while writing it.” ‘
HOLLY BRICKLEY AND A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES

I have always been acutely envious of musicians. A common affliction, I realise, but mine seems to hurt more than it should. Is it because I love music so much? Because I grew up in a musical family but couldn’t sing along to Debbie Gibson without making even the cat bolt from the room?

I set out to explore this envy in a novel, because this is why I write, in part: to understand the more baffling corners of my brain. I wanted to make it a love story, where I knew envy would be richly complicating.

From this seed grew the characters: Percy Marks, full of fiery opinions about music but no talent, and Joe Morrow, a songwriter who thrives on Percy’s blistering critiques. Once I found Percy’s voice and felt the electricity of her dynamic with Joe, the rest of the book came quickly in an exhilarating, year-long whoosh.

In the end, envy is a pretty small part of the story. Deep Cuts is about the joy of making art with other people, and all the problems of ego and communication that go along with that.

It is also something of a personal jukebox. Each chapter highlights a song (from Joe’s originals to real-world anthems by OutKast, Pulp, Joni Mitchell, and more),

weaving scraps of music journalism into the fabric of a novel. My hope is that it won’t matter whether readers know the songs; what matters is how Percy uses each one to propel her story forward, the way she takes its magic and makes it her own.

Writing this book was so consuming and cathartic and just plain fun, it made me realise that’s what I envied most about musicians: the way they play; the visceral joy and freedom they seem to find in their art, even if what they’re processing is pain. Why did it take me so long to realise we can do this with books, too?

Reading experience the joy and freedom I felt while writing it. I hope you close the book feeling more pride in your own unique talents, whatever those might be. And then I hope you blast a song you’d forgotten how much you love and dance to it, or make out to it, or just lie there feeling its magic become your own.

The Secret History and If We Were Villains

We were always The Four. From our very first day at High Realms. The four scholarship pupils. Outsiders in a world of power and privilege.

It would have made our lives a lot easier if Marta had simply pushed Genevieve out of our bedroom window that day. Certainly, it would have

been tragic. She would have died instantly.

But Marta didn’t push her then, or – if you choose to believe me – at any other time. If she had, all of what we went through would not have happened.

I’ve told this story as clearly as I could – as rationally as I’ve been able, in the circumstances, to achieve. I don’t regret what we did. And I would do it all again.

SOPHIE JORDAN

I couldn’t type this story fast enough.” ‘

SOPHIE JORDAN ON HER EPIC ROMANTASY, A FIRE IN THE SKY

Dear bookseller,

My whole life as a reader, and as a writer, has been about fantasy.

The fantasy of romance is the promise of “happily ever after” despite all obstacles, and there’s such joy and comfort in that. I grew up in a remote area. Neighbours… other kids were not even in walking distance. My older brothers were not very interested in playing with a little sister, so books were my salvation and none more than romance novels. The fantasy of romance, of big sweeping sagas, and, specifically, medieval romance, did something to the wiring in my brain. Castles. Knights. Warrior princesses. A world steeped in impossible danger. There’s just something about characters finding their “happily ever after” amid the bleakest of times. It’s uplifting. Thrilling. Inspiring. It’s the countless fairy tales injected into my veins since preschool.

So when I found myself sitting down at my keyboard in the summer of 2023, the world of A Fire in the Sky spilled across the screen. As the adage goes, I wrote what I know… what I love, what I crave, what I long to read. Castles. Knights. Warrior princesses. A world steeped in impossible danger.

Oh, and dragons.

The story of a royal whipping girl, the quintessential underdog brought up to

stoically accept punishment as her due, materialised fully formed in my mind. It was like she was waiting to emerge. Tamsyn is more than she seems, struggling against secrets dark enough to topple a kingdom—a heroine getting it done (eventually) against all odds and finding love (the star-crossed/ hopeless kind) in the process. Yesss. It’s the ultimate fantasy. Epic. Transformative, even. The seeming ordinary becoming extraordinary. Tamsyn is me. You. Every woman breaking free from the constraints of a world that seeks to define and subdue her. I couldn’t type this story fast enough.

So there we have it. Medieval vibes and magic. Castles, knights, steamy kisses and a royal whipping girl rising from the role forced on her since birth. It’s all there – everything I’ve ever loved in a book plus everything I could never find in a book (but wanted) coming together. It’s an amalgamation of all my joys, and I hope you, too, will find joy within the pages.

S.F.
S.F. WILLIAMSON A Language of Dragons is a love letter to translation.” ‘

WILLIAMSON ON THE DEBUT SHE DIDN’T WANT TO WRITE…

I didn’t want to write a book about dragons. In fact, the first draft of my YA debut, A Language of Dragons, was a Word Document titled ‘Dragon Book I Don’t Want to Write’. Believe it or not, two years ago there weren’t many dragon books on the market and I wasn’t sure it would sell. I wasn’t confident in my ability to write for young adults and I didn’t even have a great love for dragons. But after my first two Middle Grade books died on submission, I was ready to try something different. The result is the kind of fantasy I love, which is “grounded” or “low” fantasy – our world as we know it, but with an extraordinary element. In this case, it’s Bletchley Park with dragons.

A Language of Dragons has my fascination for languages (I’m a literary translator), the political intrigue of the 2010s dystopia I devoured as a teenager (The Hunger Games, Divergent, Noughts and Crosses…) and themes of selfforgiveness and redemption. It’s a love letter to translation and a book about prejudice and morality, all examined through a fantastical lens.

We all know Bletchley Park for its Enigma code-breakers of WW2, but it did

exist earlier than that, back in the 1920s, which is when my novel is set. Back then, just like today, you couldn’t travel through Britain without hearing a variety of languages, dialects and regional accents. Add to this a plethora of dragon tongues, including one that is so secret that the only thing the government can liken it to is code, and you’ve got a world ripe for a young translator: enter Vivien Featherswallow.

Like me, she’s captivated by how languages don’t always have equivalents for certain words, so that some meaning is unavoidably lost in translation; by how the way a person speaks affects how they are perceived; and by how languages are born out of others. We both end up exploring these truths, Viv through a job she is forced to take and me through a book I didn’t want to write.

But I’m so glad I did.

PHILIPPA GREGORY

Being exceptional or heroic – or even deviant and inadequate – is normal for women.” ‘
PHILIPPA

GREGORY ON ADAPTING NORMAL WOMEN FOR TEENS

Dear Booksellers,

When I came to adapt my best-selling non-fiction, Normal Women: 900 years of making history, for teens, I was determined that it would be a genuine history book: challenging, authentic, controversial and accessible – a shorter, but not lesser, version of the award-winning 900 pages. Now I’ve finished it – a year on top of the ten years that it took me to write the original – I see it as a bitesize version of its bigger sister: concise, an easier read – but just as important.

Normal Women is the first long-form history of England with women at the centre of the story. Events that we think of as completely male-driven are told with an eye to the women in the shadows – and the history is upended!

I describe an almost infinite variety of ‘normal women’ – whose extraordinary lives were normal for their time. I show ‘normal women’ going to war, ploughing fields, writing, and loving. They rode chargers in jousts, flew Spitfires, invented the rules for prize-fighting, issued their own currencies and built ships, corn mills and houses as part of their everyday lives. They committed crimes, worshipped many gods, cooked and nursed, invented and rioted. Being exceptional or heroic – or even

deviant and inadequate – is normal for women.

I tell how women adapt to be whatever society demands: there is no such thing as ‘women’s nature’. When society needs women at work, normal women are told they are ambitious, hard-working and physically strong. When society needs women to leave profitable and interesting work to men, normal women are told they are weak, domestic, and their children need them at home.

Even though this is a proud history of women, it’s not a book only for girls, but for everyone. In these pages, anyone can find the history of themselves. In this world that can be so confusing and disheartening, I want young people to read it and know they are not alone, that neither boys nor girls need to fear the future. Women have done everything in the past – and women can do anything in the future – and this sets us all free.

Good luck with this – my most treasured book.

POWER EXPLAINS THE THINKING BEHIND THE DOSE EFFECT

In today’s fast-paced, digitally driven world, having consistently good mental health is becoming incredibly challenging. My latest book, The Dose Effect, addresses this issue head-on, providing a practical and science-backed approach to elevating your happiness and unlocking your brain’s potential. Drawing from my background in neuroscience and psychology, this book introduces readers to the crucial role of four key chemicals in the brain—Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins— collectively referred to as DOSE.

The Dose Effect is a guide to understanding and harnessing the natural brain chemicals that govern our emotions, motivation, and overall mental state. Through my extensive research and experiences, I have developed a series of actionable strategies that anyone can implement to improve their experience in their mind. These strategies are rooted in the concept of the DOSE Actionsspecific behaviours that naturally boost the levels of these chemicals, thereby improving mood, focus, and social connection.

One of the unique aspects of The Dose Effect is its focus on practical application. The book is structured to guide readers through a series of challenges and exercises

that gradually shift their lifestyle towards healthier habits. For instance, the Flow State challenge helps individuals cultivate deep focus and train their attention span, while the Phone Fasting challenge promotes healthier digital habits. Each chapter builds on the last, creating a comprehensive framework for achieving lasting change.

I have had the privilege of delivering live experiences to over 50,000 people at prestigious institutions like Oxford University and organisations like Amazon and the NHS. This experience has shown me the immense need for an accessible answer to the mental health challenge our world faces.

I’d love you to enter this journey of personal understanding and growth. Whether you’re struggling with focus, stress, or simply seeking a better understanding of your own mind, The Dose Effect offers the exact insights and tools you need.

Craig UNGER

Den of Spies: The Untold Story of Reagan, Carter and the Treason that Stole the White House

In April 1991, the New York Times ran an op-ed alleging that Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign had conspired with the Iranian government to delay the release of 52 American hostages until after the 1980 election. In return for keeping Americans in captivity until Reagan assumed the oath of office, the Republicans had secretly funnelled arms to Iran. Treasonous and illegal, the operation ensured Reagan’s victory.

Investigative journalist Craig Unger was one of the first reporters covering the October Surprise and, while attempting to unravel the mystery, he was fired, sued, and ostracised by the Washington press corps. Now Unger finally reveals the definitive story and shares startling truths about what really happened in 1980.

Charlie ENGLISH

The CIA Book Club

This is the astonishing story of the ten million books that US intelligence smuggled across the Iron Curtain during the Cold War.

From copies of Orwell to Agatha Christie, the Western effort was to undermine the censorship of the Soviet bloc, offer different visions of thought and culture to the people, and build relationships with real readers in the East.

Historian Charlie English follows the characters of the era, with Bucharest-born George Minden at the narrative’s heart. Tasked with masterminding the effort, Minden understood both sides of the story: he was opposed to the intellectual straitjacket created by the communist system, but he also resented the Americans’ patronising tone. This is how the perilous mission to bring books as beacons of hope played out, told in riveting detail.

Eden Undone: A True Story of Sex, Murder and Utopia at the Dawn of World War II

At the height of the Great Depression, oil mogul George Allan Hancock and his crew of Smithsonian scientists came upon a gruesome scene: two bodies, mummified by the searing heat, on the shore of a remote Galápagos island.

On another trip, Hancock was surprised to discover an equally exotic group of humans: European exiles who had fled political and economic unrest, hoping to create a utopian paradise.

As Hancock and his fellow

American explorers would witness, paradise had turned into chaos.

Using never-before-published archives, Abbott Kahler weaves a chilling, stranger-than-fiction tale worthy of Agatha Christie. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the march to World War II, with a mystery as alluring and curious as the Galápagos itself, Eden Undone explores the universal and timeless desire to seek utopia.

Why We’re Getting Poorer: A Realist’s Guide to the Economy and How We Can Fix It

A lapsed economist debunks the most common myths about how our economy operates – and explains how the world really works.

Whilst economics is at the heart of the society we live in, few people feel they have enough of a grasp on the subject. Unfortunately, as Cahal Moran explains, trained economists often come up short too. This is because economics as a field has become filled with jargon

and complexity, becoming inaccessible to those of us without academic training.

Why We’re Getting Poorer delves into the key topics in the discipline – money, globalisation, inequality, climate change, and growth – to demonstrate why what we think we know about these things is wrong, and will teach us what we really need to know about them.

RuPAUL

The House of Hidden Meanings: A Memoir

A profound introspection of his life, relationships, and identity, The House of Hidden Meanings is a self-portrait of the legendary icon on the road to global fame and changing the way the world thinks about drag.

Central to RuPaul’s success has been his chameleonic adaptability. From drag icon to powerhouse producer of one of the world’s largest television franchises, RuPaul’s ever-shifting nature has always

been part of his brand as both supermodel and super mogul.

Yet that adaptability has made him enigmatic to the public. In this memoir, his most intimate and detailed book yet, RuPaul makes himself truly known. The House of Hidden Meanings is a personal philosophy that testifies to the value of chosen family, the importance of harnessing what makes you different, and the transformational power of facing yourself fearlessly.
