Carlo Scarpa 'Waters of Reflection and Mouning' By Harold Corser

Page 1

Beauty through reflection, a mastery of water and the inherent spirituality expressed through design and architecture. Carlo Scarpa's Brion Tomb is a space created to allow moaning and inspire thought of reflection within oneself Scarpa was able to do this through water. This is a visual study of his work through this lens.

Clay was used to mimic Scarpa’s artisanal nature and use of natural materials Each model is a facade Scarpa intentionally reflects against the many water installations The body of water within this work is used as a means for those experiencing this reflection personally Also, so you can reflect on yourself, so please take your time to think and REFLECT

The Works

01

WINDOW

These windows make up the facade of the chapel with the Brion Tomb. A moment the encapsulates Scarpa's use of water, materials and reflection.

Scarpa's detailed architectural finishing is fundamental to part of his approach to the medium. the stair shaped detail is seen in many places within the Brion Tomb, sunk under the water growing on the side of his structures and reflected against the large bodies of water exemplifying the size and accenting the intricate detailed beauty.

03

INFINITY

Arguably the most famous moment within the Tomb, these circular windows beckon the entrance to the cemetery. A moment that shows Scarpas ability to garner a sense of spirituality through craft and design, Infinity in death.
