Dear Brandi: West Vancouver’s 2013 Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited, was a tremendous success this year, with over 120,000 people in attendance over the 10 days. The weather was outstanding and contributed to the amazing waterfront experience. The festival continues to grow, and offers a higher level of musical performances, new artist workshops and artsy kids studio, exhibitions of visual arts with a juried group show, an upscale art market with over 80 tents, dance and drum performances, new area for food carts called the Artisan Eats, a children’s art auction, and great family outdoor movie screenings, with popcorn too! Our audience ranged from the smallest of children to seniors from our own community and from beyond. It is a destination Festival!

The Harmony Arts Festival is very thankful and appreciative of RE/MAX’s involvement, contribution, and partnership with this year’s Festival.

The attached report is a review of your sponsorship, and the media exposure that they received. We are including a communications review of print material, collateral, signage, and paid media, and have attached clippings from many of the noteworthy articles on the Harmony Arts Festival. Secondly, we are including some notable pictures from the Festival, along with the Festival’s specific overall media exposure, including the additional radio advertising and TV spots this year.

Lastly, I have included the press releases, and Festival script with the daily announcements.

RE/MAX, had increased exposure as a result of some of the new programming added to the festival this year. There was the children’s new art programming, as well as greater festival presence on the radio, TV spots, and bus shelter ads.

Your presence was felt, on the festival site, with the logo on all of the large tower signage, and signage at the foot of 15th St. on the garden stage.

This year we continued to capitalize on broader marketing of the Harmony Arts Festival, continuing with the banners on the streets, a sense of arrival with tower signage and new large stage scrims, giving a more professional look. Major sponsors such as RE/MAX had the logo displayed on the poster, the bus shelter, the large cube signs and 13 – 3x3 signs located throughout West Vancouver.

We have included the list of signage in the attached report. With your sponsorship of the RE/MAX Garden Concerts, your logo graced the center page of our Festival Guide, and was featured prominently on the stage scrim of the garden stage. The RE/MAX Garden Concerts, were in high demand.

The Art Market tenting remained up through the ten days of the festival, and stayed open on both weekends again this year. We also continued with the radio station sponsorship which added advertising and talk about the festival on The Peak FM. New this year was the signing of a new magazine sponsorship with Homes & Living. They featured an editorial ad appearing in the June and the August issues. RE/MAX’s logo was prominently located in the ad. The Homes & Living magazine took the festival up a notch, showcasing the art and culinary parts of the festival in their magazine. The ad highlighted the two paid events: Best of the West, and RARE, the sponsored sit down dinner evening on the water, featuring Rodney’s Oyster House shucking the “rare” seafood.

RARE, was held at the beachfront at Lawson Creek Studio and became a contemporary casual dining lounge, with seafood paired with wines and savoury spirits. This amazing waterfront experience included live music too! We all were very lucky to have it on one of those amazing evenings, weather wise, in Vancouver.

With the festival this year, we saw a trend, the trend being, festival goers wanting to be on the waterfront, with a glass of wine, and a plate of great food. The added benefit of amazing nearby art, and musical entertainment, is the icing on the cake. We want to capitalize on this need, and plan to hold several more “events” surrounding this theme next year, whether it is a family barbeque at long tables, or different celebrity chef dinners, we will be looking to develop this culinary area of the festival. The waterfront and the people are demanding it!

This year we continued to build on the brand and chose art work for the festival guide, t-shirts and cards. This art piece was selected from the West Vancouver Document Number: 672675

Museum from the estate of the Binning family. This painting was done by Bertram Charles Binning, a resident of West Vancouver, back in 1961. This painting was the art piece branded for Harmony 2013, and it carried the sun and waterfront image through the festival.

We activated the waterfront with the Garden Stage at the foot of 15th St. The Waterfront Lounge continues to be a huge success, with expanded musical programming with acts like Barney Bentall on the stage, as well as the improved sale of food and beverages. house wine, handled the operation of the Waterfront Lounge for the District, and also marketed Harmony, and all the festival had to offer, through their website, and to their marketplace. The restaurant Mangia e Bevia operated the food at the Waterfront lounge, with an added “gelato” bar for those hot summer days. We receive overwhelming feedback on the level of service and type of food served by Mangia e Bevia.

The Waterfront Lounge is the place to be at the festival. The music programmed for this stage is focussed on the “Boomer” demographic, with the 40 – 64 age group attending most nights.

The Art Market was open for both weekends of the festival. This is very well received. We have a jury select the artists for inclusion in the Art Market, which continues to bring the level of artisans up. This was embraced by everyone who visited. Argyle Street was closed, allowing a free flow of pedestrian traffic from one venue to the other.

The Group Exhibition Tent, Artsy Kids Outdoor Studio, and For the Love of Art Exhibition Tent were all new art programming areas for the festival, and were very successful.

The new Artsy Kids Outdoor Studio was a series of workshops, live demonstrations and hands-on art making activities like print and paper making, wood carving, bookbinding, black and white photography, animation, jewellery making, painting and more. This was greatly attended by the youth in the community.

Another new feature this year was the area called Artisan Eats, which located several food carts in one area, a super way to give excitement, and a “vibe” to the Festival, and a full stream of people, staying to eat at the festival.

The Opening Reception was very casual; festival goers had the opportunity to view art in the Group Exhibition Tent and upstairs at the Music Box, the Silk Purse, For the Love of Art Exhibition tent and at the Ferry Building. All of these locations had wine and cheese receptions provided for festival goers to enjoy, mingle and look at the art for the opening of the festival. There were many Senior’s enjoying these receptions.

The headliner band for opening night was Spirit of the West. This drew a large crowd in John Lawson Park, for the opening festival speeches. This was a super way to kick off the festival, on a beautiful evening. Where else in the city can you do this on the waterfront with cruise ships going by?

Next year’s festival will be August 1st to August 10th.

Attention culture seekers: There is something going on in West Vancouver that’s worth crossing the bridge for!

West Vancouver, BC / April 2, 2013 – For more than two decades, West Vancouver’s Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited, has been one of the North Shore’s bestloved community events. Produced by the District of West Vancouver, the festival is a popular community-based celebration of music, performance, cinema and art that celebrates the best of the North Shore, regional and national performing, visual and culinary arts. Building on its past successes, the 2013 Harmony Arts Festival is challenging itself by extending its legacy with expanded programming that is sure to attract thousands of visitors from all over Metro Vancouver!

Whether it’s world-class musical performances, inspiring visual art, mouth watering gastronomic events or simply the natural beauty of the setting that gets your heart beating a little faster, there is something for everyone at this year’s Harmony Arts Festival.

The musical performances that have been the mainstay of the festival have continued to expand in scope. This year, there will be more than 70 free concerts featuring some of the country’s most memorable performers on two outdoor stages: the Pacific Arbour Garden Stage in the Grosvenor Waterfront Lounge and the West Vancouver Community Foundation Stage in John Lawson Park.

The visual arts component of the festival also continues to develop in 2013. To celebrate this, organizers have created RARE, three evenings with well-known local chefs who have risen to the challenge of creating dining experiences inspired by the West Vancouver Museum’s collection of notable Canadian artists including Emily Carr, Gordon Smith, Jack Shadbolt, Joan Balzar and more. In addition to this culinary/visual arts celebration, there will be many opportunities to meet local, regional and national artists and artisans, as well as view and purchase one of a kind high-end artworks created by some of Canada’s most celebrated creative imaginations at the newly created juried Art Market along Argyle Avenue.

Another highlight of this year’s festival will certainly be the new Artsy Kids Outdoor Studio.

There will be a series of workshops, live demonstrations and hands-on art making activities that will give youth the opportunity to see art made in front of their eyes. There will also be opportunities to actively participate print making, papermaking, wood carving, bookbinding, black and white photography, animation, jewelry making, textile art, sculpture, painting, and more!

For food lovers, there will be no better way to wind down from a wonderful day at the festival than to attend one of the many culinary events that will be taking place along the festival’s

stunning waterfront setting including the extremely popular third-annual BEST of the WEST. With its ambitious programming and beautiful settings, this year’s Harmony Arts Festival is destined to be one of the highlights of the summer festival season. Don’t miss it!

West Vancouver, BC / May 23, 2013 – After some very stiff competition and weeks of deliberation, the Harmony Arts Festival jury has finally selected the artists who will participate in this year’s Art Market at the 2013 Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited!

For more than two decades the annual Harmony Arts Festival has transformed the stunning West Vancouver Ambleside waterfront into an open-air celebration of the arts. The 2013 Harmony Arts Festival will take place from August 2-11. Visitors will enjoy street performances, art exhibitions, artist talks and demonstrations, concerts, the Art Market, family-oriented activities and unique culinary experiences.

The Art Market is an admission-free and commission-free event that will take place over two weekends during the festival: August 2-5 (the BC Day August long weekend) and the following weekend between August 9-11.

The Art Market is located along Argyle Avenue between 14th and 16th streets in West Vancouver, and though it’s just a scenic ten minute drive from downtown Vancouver, the ocean breezes and spectacular views make it seem a world away from the noise and cares of the city.

Visitors to the 2013 Art Market will experience the pleasure of viewing and enjoying original works of art by 83 artists including photographs, jewelry, textiles, glasswork, painting, fine woodwork, ceramics, metal, mixed media and sculpture all in one spectacular location. Artists will be on site, and visitors are encouraged to meet and chat with these regionally and nationally recognized creators. Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase one of a kind, high-end artworks by these artists.

Featured artists who will be participating in this year’s Art Market include: Russell Hackney – Ceramic artist Born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, a city also known as ‘The Potteries’, birthplace of fine ceramics such as Wedgwood and Royal Doulton, Russell apprenticed under his father at the family business learning the craft of plaster modelling and mould-making for ceramics. Russell has modelled designs from everyday functional ceramics to commissioned pieces—his most notable achievement was modelling a replica 19th Century clock that was presented to the Queen. Immigrating to Vancouver, BC in 2002, he continues to provide original design and mold-making services in both Canada and the US. Russell currently lives on Bowen Island, BC.

Yair Stern – Jewelry artist Born in Haifa, Israel, Yair studied Mathematics at the prestigious Technion (Israel Institute of Technology).

Having both an artistic as well as scientific mind, Yair began handcrafting jewelry as a hobby that quickly became a full-time job in 1995. As a self-taught jewelry artist, Yair experiments with new materials and techniques to create various styles and materials to form a large eclectic collection. His works are sold in galleries in Canada, USA, Australia and Israel. Yair and his wife relocated to Canada in 2007 and currently live in Oshawa, ON. Bruce Turnbull – Visual artist / painter Born in Vancouver, BC, Bruce graduated from the Ontario Collage of Art and Design with a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting in 1998 and a Master of Fine Art at the New York Academy of Art in 2001. He currently lives and works in Armstrong, BC. Bruce began building things in his father’s workshop at a young age and continues to be a hands-on do-it-yourselfer. While he realizes that it is important to understand what is going on around him in order that the tasks of daily life are taken care of, he thinks it is far more interesting to misinterpret, misconstrue and recontextualize. Bruce’s paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo shows as well as group exhibitions in Toronto, New York and Helsinki and are represented in public, corporate and private collections in North America, Europe and Asia including the National Portrait Gallery of Canada and the Colart Foundation.

Leanne Christie - Visual artist / painter A full time artist since 2008, Leanne trained under Noel Hodnett and Robert Brooks at the influential Rhodes University art school in South Africa, graduating with a degree in painting in 1996. Leanne’s work reveals an intuitive understanding of the consistency of paint, the rhythmic placement of brushstrokes and the removal of colour as a fundamental element. Her developing maturity with the medium and her growing awareness of the gap between the laws which govern nature and those of the painting, has lead Leanne to experiment with a new hierarchy: brushstroke, composition, colour without the retreat into abstraction. Leanne’s painting has become easily identifiable by her sensitive myriad of greys and brushwork which dances on the edge of abstraction.

Diane Jordens - Dollmaker Inspired by The Wind in the Willows, Beatrix Potter, and numerous others classic tales, Diane has been creating small animal character dolls since 1988. She has participated regularly in numerous shows including the One of a Kind Show in Toronto, Circle Craft Christmas Market, where she was awarded the bronze award for excellence in craft, in addition to other regional and American shows. Collectors from all over the world have purchased Diane’s dolls.

FOR THE LOVE OF ART: An Exhibition of Children’s Artwork and Auction The Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited, is introducing some exciting new programming for this year. This new programming aims to engage the public in art making workshops, live demonstrations, drop-in classes and new artful events for children and families.

One of the new events within the festival schedule is an exhibition and auction of children’s artwork titled FOR THE LOVE OF ART. This exhibition will showcase a curated selection of West Vancouver’s emerging art talent; all under the age of 13. Accepted applicant’s artwork for the exhibition and auction will be professionally framed and on display in an outdoor exhibition tent during the Harmony Arts Festival from August 2- 11, 2013. This exhibit offers a unique opportunity to showcase the work of developing young artists and the quality of art programming in the community.

The exhibition will kick off on August 2, opening day of the festival, with a fun, kid friendly opening art reception. Exhibition activities will conclude on August 10, as part of Creative Kids Day, with an exciting live and silent auction to celebrate selected artwork. The live auction will take place on the Main Stage of the festival with a dynamic professional auctioneer to raise the profile of the important artwork that children and youth are creating in community.

One of the aims of this exhibit is to facilitate a unique learning opportunity for young artists in the community so they can experience the: o process of preparing work for public exhibition o sense of empowerment from sharing artwork publicly o newfound confidence from public recognition of one’s artwork o celebration of art and art making with fellow exhibiting artists o fun and anticipation of sharing work for live and silent auction Exhibition General Information • • • • • • •

Exhibition Theme: “Land, Sea, Air”. In your submission consider the theme and the work that best reflects the artists emerging talents.

Exhibition: August 2- 11, 2013 – All artists are invited and encouraged to join us for the special kidfriendly Art Opening Reception August 2.

A maximum of 70 art pieces will be displayed within FOR THE LOVE OF ART exhibition. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Festival organizers cannot guarantee that all waitlisted submissions will be included.

All work submitted should be unframed. The festival will be responsible for the framing and presenting the artwork.

The Art Exhibition is open to students between the ages of 1 and 13. We are looking for a variety of ages, variety of mediums and diversity of expression to be on display.

Each student can submit only 1 piece of artwork.

Auction General Information • Live and Silent Auction: All artists are invited and encouraged to join us for the evening of August 10, 2013, on the Main Stage for an exciting evening of art auction activities(time announced before July 1, via email).

• There will be both a silent and live auction. A maximum of 30 pieces will be made available for live auction.

• Artists will have a choice if they would like to have their work made available for auction. Every effort will be made to accommodate the requests of each young artist; however the final selections for the live auction will be made by organizers to ensure that there is a broad range of work available.

• All entrants will be contacted via email for follow-up on the auction.

• All artwork submitted will be professionally mounted/framed for display by the Harmony Arts Festival.

• Proceeds from the “Love of Art” auctions will be divided between the submitting artist and the Harmony Arts Festival to directly support children’s art programming.

• Proceeds will divided as follows: o 70% of proceeds will be available to the submitting artist in form of a cheque for cash value or as a voucher for towards more Visual Arts classes/ camps and programs offered by the District of West Vancouver. The artist can choose how they wish to receive their portion of the proceeds. o 30 % of the proceeds will go directly to Children’s Art Programming at the Harmony Arts Festival.

Featuring performances from some of the country’s most established artists as well as a roster of exciting up and coming singers and players, visitors will have the opportunity to hear a wide variety of sounds and musical styles. Whether you love classical music, jazz or world dance music, there is something to delight every year at the 2013 Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited.

The popular RE/MAX Garden Concerts will once again be returning to the Pacific Arbour Stage in Millennium Park at the foot of 15th Street. This stage will boast a variety of musical acts at several times throughout the day as well as showcase concerts in the evening. While listening to great music, festival goers will be able to enjoy refreshing drinks and local cuisine from the adjoining Grosvenor Waterfront Lounge.

Artists for this celebrated series include the popular She Stole My Beer, Barney Bentall, The Twisters, Fear of Drinking and Soultracks. Fans of acoustic music will love Reid Jamieson’s daytime set and the chance to hear Cassandra Bangel, Melanie Dekker, The River And The Road along with many more singer songwriters close up in an intimate setting.

Over the years, the ONNI Group Sunset Concerts on the West Vancouver Community Foundation Stage at John Lawson Park (foot of 17th Street) have become one of the Festival’s main draws. Located close to a variety of food vendors, visitors will be able to enjoy food from the Backstage Diner sponsored by Canadian In-Homecare and Green Earth Organics.

Along with established acts such as The Paperboys, Liam Titcomb and Cousin Harley, The Harmony Arts Festival is proud and delighted to present the North Shore’s own Spirit Of The West in concert Friday, August 2nd on the West Vancouver Community Foundation Stage! Formed nearly three decades ago, these West and North Vancouver raised musicians sung their timeless songs of love, hope and survival to a growing number of fans across the globe. Don’t miss the chance to hear Spirit Of The West playing their first hometown show in many years. Other acts appearing at the ONNI Group Sunset Series include Soulstream, Champagne Republic and Tiller’s Folly. Other highlights include the popular Hollyburn House Seniors’ Series. This year’s events feature the Musical Occasions String Octet who will play classical favourites from their repertoire. Also part of this series is performances by Dal Richards Orchestra and the Brothers Arntzen Brass Band.

FOOD & DRINK The 3nd annual BEST of the WEST, presented by Park Royal, lights up the Ambleside Pier for a fantastic tasting event not to be missed.

Hosts house wine have paired 13 of the North Shore’s best restaurants with 13 BC wineries creating the perfect complementary dish. The evening’s guests will vote on their favourite, with the winning restaurant and winery team crowned Best of the West for 2013.

Harmony Arts Festival 2013 - iPhone App This 2013 Harmony Arts Festival, sponsored by Odlum Brown Limited, had an iPhone App that helped festival goers navigate through the site and schedule with ease. Launching the iPhone App in 2011, this year was the third season the app was in use. The app was advertised inside the Festival Guide and on our festival website.

Marking another successful season, the Harmony Arts Festival iPhone App had over 800 new downloads in addition to over 400 users from last year opting to update their app for a third season.

The festival app had over 1,200 distinct users in 2013.

Every summer, Summer Harp Institute attracts faculty from around the world and four of them take the stage to perform a combination of classical and Brazilian music for solos and harp ensemble. Cristina Braga, above, principal harpist with Rio de Janeiro’s symphony orchestra, is considered the world’s leading harp player of bossa nova music.

Her rhythmic harp style wowed MusicFest Vancouver audiences last year. Judy Loman, principal harpist with the Toronto Symphony for 43 years, is known for recording works that become standards for harpists worldwide. Gianetta Baril has performed with orchestras around the world, and Elizabeth Volpé Bligh is Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s longtime principal harpist.

Take in free concerts by top drawer local bands three Saturdays in August. First up is jangly folk-rockers Current Swell, shown, on Aug. 3, winner of the 2011 Peak Performance Project concert (a prize worth $100,500). The series is bookended by another Celtic-influenced band, The Paperboys. But there’s plenty more entertainment between, some of it not Irish in any way, shape or form.

For instance, Cousin Harley — fronted by one of Vancouver’s best guitarists, Paul Pigat — will perform tasty country and rockabilly licks Aug. 4. Also look for up-and-coming acts Dear Rouge (winners of last year’s Peak Performance Project local band competition) and Champagne Republic. Based on title alone, the latter’s Broke Broke Girl would be our new favourite jam (if we knew what that meant).

Tickets are selling quickly for two alfresco culinary evenings connected to the upcoming Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver. On August 7, the annual Best of the West event takes place on Ambleside Pier (at the foot of 14th Street and Argyle Avenue) with food and wine pairings from 13 B.C. wineries and 13 North Shore restaurants. August 8 marks the debut of RARE, a seafood-focused soiree held on a temporary deck near Lawson Creek Studios (1756 Argyle Avenue), where the creek meets the ocean. Rodney’s Oyster House is preparing dishes for the event, which features family-style dining and an oyster-shucking station. Perhaps not surprisingly given the heat, the Chili Tank (which serves chilies and soups) wasn’t seeing a lot of action, but then inexplicably neither was E.L.I.’s Serious Sausage, which offers premium, all-natural bratwurst on Schrippen buns and currywurst in a dish with house-made, lip-smacking curry ketchup.

Hormone- and nitrate-free ingredients also make up the wieners at DougieDog Diner Truck, but these are not your typical ballpark franks.

From his red-and-white-checkered truck, the owner, who goes by the name Dougie Luv, dishes up monsters like the Charlie Mac Dog, which is topped with bacon and macaroni and cheese, and the DougieDog, which comes with a crazy heap of pastrami, horseradish, melted Cheddar, and Grey Poupon mustard. Dougie makes his own butterscotch root beer, too.

A favourite find was Johnny’s Pops, exotic popsicles in funky flavour combinations like raspberry-basil and avocado-lime. (There was also strawberry rhubarb, blueberry mojito, and creamy strawberry lemonade.)

Other things to know about the fest: this

year, there’s a new admission fee of $2 for adults and a maximum of $5 for families (kids 13 and under get in free). The money goes toward renting the site, plus partial proceeds support A Loving Spoonful, which provides nourishing meals to people living with HIV/AIDS. Vancity members get in free, so remember to have that bank card handy. (There are ATMs onsite if you forget to bring cash.) There’s a market featuring vendors such as Zulu Records, as well as a rotating lineup of DJs, including Flipout and Cherchez La Femme. Kids have access to a bouncy castle and face-painting. Food prices vary, with most items costing between $5 and $9.

Parking can be somewhat challenging, but there’s a pay lot across the road and some free street parking. Of course, you should be taking transit, walking, or cycling anyway; there’s even a bicycle valet. 3. Preheat the oven to 375 ° F (190 ° C). Remove the greens from the beets, place the beets on a baking sheet, and drizzle with olive oil to coat. Season with salt, cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 45 to 75 minutes, or until beets can be easily pierced with a knife. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Peel and dice beets into bite-sized pieces.

4. Reduce oven temperature to 325 ° F (170 ° C). Place pine nuts on a small baking sheet and roast until golden, about 6 to 12 minutes.

5. Cut lemons in half crosswise. In a castiron skillet over medium-high heat, grill lemons cutside down for about 4 minutes, or until nicely charred.

8. In a large salad bowl, combine desired amount of vinaigrette with potatoes, goat cheese, chopped vegetables, beets, fennel, radish, and olives. Toss until well coated. Add the lettuce mix and toss to coat.

9. To serve, divide salad between 4 plates.

Top with pine nuts and garnish with herbs.

Divide tuna into 4 servings and arrange beside each salad. Drizzle pesto over the tuna and place lemon halves on the side.

PESTO

½ cup (125 mL) assorted fresh herbs, such as basil, mint, or parsley 1 clove garlic, peeled Pinch salt 4 Tbsp (60 mL) olive oil, divided 1. Remove stems from the herbs and roughly chop the leaves.

2. Crush the garlic clove with the back of a knife.

3. Place the herbs, garlic, salt, and 1 Tbsp (15 mL) of the olive oil into a mortar and grind with a pestle until the herbs are flattened and the garlic is incorporated.

4. Transfer the mixture into a small bowl, and stir in remaining 3 Tbsp (45 mL) of oil.

Animator creates the illusion of life Stearns preserves the old art of pen on paper Jeremy Shepherd jshepherd@nsnews.com

THE child bounds for the door but his escape is blocked by a towering figure wearing a sugary sweet smile.

The kindergarten teacher has him trapped in a room of naiveté and juice boxes; alone in the knowledge of the horrors that loom in the darkness of nap time.

This is the storytelling world of Vancouver animator Jeff Chiba Stearns, at once sweet and sophisticated.

Stearns’ stories have included a Post-it note of uncertain genealogy who ascertains the whereabouts of his father, folds itself into a canary-coloured crane, and flies.

Other work is autobiographical, detailing his struggle to become a filmmaker and ruminating on what it means to be a Canadian of Japanese and European descent, besides having a taste for perogies with soy sauce.

What binds his work, almost without exception, is the dying art of pen and paper.

A river of ink once flowed through Disney’s studios, rushing past the animators whose skilled hands acted as midwives in the birth of 80 years of indelible cartoons. From Mickey Mouse’s earliest misadventures aboard a steamship to Fantasia to The Princess and the Frog, hand-

drawn animation was the common link. That era appears to be over. But while Disney and other studios embrace computer animation, Stearns is as committed to ink and pulp as John Henry was to his sledgehammer.

“To me there’s a romantic notion of pausing this in the world of animation of keeping it old school and drawing on paper. . . . A lot of people are drawing on computers now and I’m guilty of that, you’ve got to keep up, but at the same time there’s nothing like pen on paper,” he says, speaking in the rapid cadence befitting an artist who spends his life cramming as much as possible into one twenty-fourth of a second.

Stearns will attempt to pass on his love of doodles, drawings, and sketches at the Classic Animation Anijam scheduled for Aug. 10 at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver.

After taking children through a few of the basic principles of animation, the kids will see their work pieced into an animated film that evening.

“There’s a definite reward and satisfaction to seeing a group of drawings you’ve done come alive,” Stearns says.

Stearns’ use of the word ‘alive’ is instructive, because for him animation is ultimately about a single, vital component.

“There’s tips and tricks and things over a hundred years that animators have come up with that help create that illusion of life,” Stearns says.

Those tips and tricks include the squash and the stretch, so that the fingers stretching towards a frightened Dalmatian may seem to elongate

Kids will pen their drawings on Post-it pads From page 33 as they draw nearer. Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas laid out 12 of those principles in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation.

Characters should appear three-dimensional and move naturally, so that Ichabod Crane’s long limbs continue their gangly journey even after his torso is still. Great animation happens through constant observation of the nuances of movement, according to Stearns.

“It’s one of the most misunderstood art forms to ever exist ‘cause I think a lot of people don’t quite understand the process that is involved with drawing thousands of drawings . . . and trying to capture that illusion of life in the drawings,” Stearns says. “As soon as you start teaching that to people they get it. . . . The walls break down.”

And as those walls crumble the artists can tell their own stories, Stearns explains.

“It’s trying to get kids to self-reflect and express their emotions through just doodles, or drawings, or things that come alive,” Stearns says.

Approximately 40 years before the first film was animated, the flipbook was patented.

That early form of animation can still be useful, according to Stearns, who plans to have the young Anijam artists pen their drawings on Postit pads.

“We need to de-mystify the process of animation for them so it’s not so intimidating,” he says.

Stearns is hoping workshops like the one slated for Aug. 10 will leave children with a lasting affection for classical animation.

“We want to basically keep an art form alive, or at least an appreciation for this art form,” he

says. “You kind of put yourself in a meditative state when you animate and that’s something where the stream of consciousness comes out through the pen and onto the page,” he explains.

“It makes the process of doing many drawings over and over again more enjoyable because I think there is a level of reflection that happens,” he says, discussing his penchant for working at a delirious pace in a quiet environment.

“You could say I’m obsessive compulsive, that’s for sure, which lends itself well to animation,” Stearns says. “We’re usually drawing thousands of drawings so I think you have to be a little OCD to be able to survive in this profession.”

Before attending the animation program at Emily Carr, Stearns was fueled by sugar and the iconic Warner Bros. cartoons drawn by Bugs Bunny creator Tex Avery.

“Back then it was Saturday morning and that was it. You’d get your bowl of cereal and sit in front of the TV at five in the morning and geek out till they shut off at 12,” he remembers.

Choosing to spend his working life manufacturing the intangible had its risks, but Stearns says he’s happy with his choices.

“I work for myself, I work the hours I want to work and I do what I want to do and my life is never boring,” he says. “I could just do production and make a ton of cash, but it doesn’t fulfill me. The idea of giving back and being that socially responsible filmmaker and combining teaching and animation is to me bliss.”

Stearns is currently working on an animated film entitled Mixed Match that deals with the difficulties multi-ethnic patients encounter when looking for bone marrow donors. The film is tentatively slated for a 2014 release.

ON the banks of the Xingu River in Brazil, Gordon Lightfoot came to their rescue.

The chiefs from nine of Brazil’s indigenous tribes looked over The Boom Booms, a Vancouver sextet with a great affinity for Brazilian music.

The band wanted to go down the river, but it would only happen if the chiefs agreed to take them.

They had met at a house that served as a way station for tribesmen paddling in search of supplies or medical care.

After a few greetings were exchanged, the band played “Steel Rail Blues,” a Gordon Lightfoot tune about loneliness and trains.

“Big steel rail gonna carry me home to the one I love,” cavaquinho player Sean Ross sings over the phone, reliving the moment before launching into the song’s distinct falsetto: “Woo hoo, woo-hoo-oo.”

It was the falsetto that won the chiefs over, he reports.

“They loved it, they thought that was the funniest thing and it totally broke the ice,” Ross recalls. “After that one of the chiefs came and he was like, ‘Hey, I’d love to take you guys and show you where we live.’”

Farther down the river, construction had already begun on the Belo Monte Dam. Slated to be the third biggest hydroelectric dam in the world, the controversial project would divert approximately 80 per cent of the river’s flow; flooding more than 500 square kilometres of forest in the Amazon basin. Approximately 20,000 people are expected to be displaced by the project.

“We were actually busking in Spain when we decided to make the trip and we had met some Brazilian girls who had gotten involved with the protest against the Belo Monte Dam,” Ross explains. “A big problem with the protest is that they’ve banned all photographers and journalists from the actual protest.”

Once the band decided to go to Brazil, they elected to wade into the Belo Monte controversy.

“We had done a fundraiser for the protest,” he said.

“Through that, a few connections got made.”

That connection got them an introduction to the chiefs, but it was Gordon Lightfoot that got them down the river.

“Another example of music being the icebreaker,” Ross says.

The Booms Booms are an eclectic mix of funk and pop that uses congas to complement electric guitars.

Formed in 2007, the band has released three albums including the 2012 EP Make Dat Do Dat. For Ross, whose brother Aaron handles lead vocals, the band truly began with a Wes Anderson movie.

While watching The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Ross was struck by the soundtrack, which featured

“I actually saw that movie when I was pretty young and then started learning a couple of those renditions,” Ross says.

He eventually became fluent in Portuguese, largely as the result of reading Brazilian song lyrics.

Ross also became fascinated with the cavaquinho.

Unable to find one of the small guitars at home, Ross played his brother’s re-strung ukulele until he was able to pick up the genuine article in Brazil.

Despite owing so much of their sound to Brazil, four of the band’s members grew up within a few blocks of Nanaimo and Hastings in Vancouver.

“Our conga player has played for 15 years in a Zimbabwean marimba band. Our guitar player came from a strictly rock background. Our bass player went to school for jazz,” Ross explains. “We’ve played so many shows together and tried so many different things and been so scattered that eventually it kind of synthesized into what we’re doing now.”

The band is currently working with Chin Injeti, the Vancouver producer best known for collaborations with hip hop acts like Eminem and Drake.

Following the trip to Brazil, the band returned to the rain of Vancouver with a slightly broader perspective.

“They kind of had to drag me out of Brazil,” Ross explains. “It’s nice to know you can feel at home in two different countries.”

The gallery will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day during the festival, showcasing works from more than 20 talented local artists. The mixed media exhibition also features 3D works from the Pacific Arbour Group Exhibition. Emergency responders and WorkSafeBCinvestigatorswere dispatched to a home under construction at 319 West 20th St. on June 14, after a roofing contractor tumbled six-anda-half metres from the roof, sustaining “serious injury,” according to WorkSafeBC inspection reports.

Burnaby-based BJ Roofing & Insulation Ltd. employees were bringing a load of construction materials to the roof when the incident happened. The man had just finished bringing a coworker some lumber to be used as a pad for a load of shingles being lifted to the roof with a crane.

A man being painted as a serial con man by those who say he duped them was arrested in West Vancouver recently after one of his most recent targets orchestrated a sting with the help of police.

Wesley Devries, 43, is in custody, charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud.

Those charges stem from deceptions allegedly foisted on both a North Vancouver bike shop and the North Shore Credit Union.

Bike store employee and duped woman join forces with police But others around the Lower Mainland say they’re also keen to see Devries answer to the long arm of the law.

In fact, it was two of those other people who tracked Devries online through a Craigslist ad and arranged to meet him in a parking lot at Park Royal July 31 — with plainclothes West Vancouver police in attendance.

last week was an employee of Dunbar Cycles in Vancouver — a shop staff said Devries had recently visited. According to store employees, Devries left his passport at the shop before taking a $7,000 carbon fibre bike out for a test ride. He didn’t return.

When store employees at the Vancouver store posted their experience in online biking forums, it was all very familiar to Sasha Tomchenko, general manager of Cove Bikes in Deep Cove.

“I know that guy,” he thought.

a-half, two years old. As far as I remember, that’s all I ever was going to do was drum. In Grade 1 I knew what I was going to do in life,” Ditrich says.

Aside from a brief period where he contemplated a career in aviation and space exploration (“You can’t be a colour-blind astronaut/pilot”) Ditrich’s focus has stayed on music, a passion that was a little bigger than his hometown.

“For fun, young people fought, played hockey, got pissed up and drove around on the strip, played more hockey, and I suspect sometimes partook of farmyard bestiality,” he writes in his online biography.

During the course of a brief interview Ditrich opines on his love of jazz despite its current stagnancy (“It’s now a dead language, it’s like Sanskrit. People go to universities to study jazz.

That’s ludicrous. You don’t study how to be cutting edge in society.”), as well as the trademarks of a Spirit of the West song (“I used to always say . . ‘In a Spirit of the West song you’ll never hear an ‘ain’t’ or a ‘baby.’”)

On the subject of surviving life in a touring band, the drummer offers a succinct summation.

“It involves a tremendous amount of Ichiban soup,” he says before delving deeper.

“Musicians are basically, and I speak from personal experience, a bunch of dummies. They fixate on the

The upright bass player and the musician wielding a guitar with a peculiar resemblance to a Morris Minor economy car went on to form the Canadian alternative band Odds. The group’s third member, Vince Ditrich, who served the ensemble with snare drum and brushes, went on to become the drummer for Spirit of the West.

The son of an army bandmaster, Ditrich got his start playing for his father’s wedding band in Lethbridge, Alta.

“He saw when I was a tiny little boy that I had this natural inclination toward drums. He had me set up with a little drum kit by the time I was a year-and-

goal, and that goal is the gig. And the gig could be the most miserable piece of crap of a performance.”

Ditrich earned his road warrior status during a stint hitting drums for Sue Medley in the 1980s.

“Sometimes, especially early on, the tour routing was sheer torture, booked by an agent who surely lived at the seventh level of hell. One tour, in particular, began in the evening in Burnaby, B.C. at a political rally for Ed Broadbent, the old NDP federal candidate. We played our set, packed the van like sardines and headed non-stop for (get this) Thunder Bay, Ont.,” he writes.

After opening for Dwight Yoakam in Thunder Bay, he turned around and headed for the next night’s gig in Winnipeg, Man. Today Ditrich has taken greater control over his career, working as a manager and producer with bands like House of Doc and Quinzy.

“That’s what youth as a musician is, it’s finding that balance point between the real idealism of your art and the pragmatic aspects of turning it into a functional, viable business.”

During those early years Ditrich provided the pace for children’s tunes, Ford truck ditties, heavy rock, and symphonic arrangements.

Pritchett branching out into artist management From page 17 his most popular songs “Hold My Beer.” In 2007 Big Wheel was nominated for Best Country Recording at the Junos and that same year Pritchett was named Independent Male Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association.

According to Pritchett his most memorable moment in his career came when he was performing in Dauphin, Man., in front of 18,000 fans.

“As soon as I heard the crowd chanting ‘Hold My Beer’ over and over again I just got shivers. I still think about it now and I still get such a rush,” Pritchett says. “This is exactly what I wanted when I was a kid, was to be able to hear that kind of a thing to be happening. It was amazing because I wasn’t expecting it.”

While Pritchett has overcome a number of obstacles in his career, he says there has always been one challenge that has remained a constant.

“It gets more and more as you get older and the longer you’re in the industry, but the biggest challenge is being away from your family and not having that connection,” Pritchett says.

Frequent spells on the road have caused him to miss important events back home.

“I sure missed a lot of birthday’s and key moments in my kid’s lives and my family’s lives that I should have been there for,” he says. “That’s the biggest challenge to me. It’s not trying to create the best music and having radio not play a single.”

Two of Pritchett’s sons are now active musicians. His eldest, Jordan, is the lead guitarist for the Juno-nominated band Faber Drive and his middle son, Breydan, plays in the Kelowna-based band Westshore Falls.

Going forward Pritchett plans to continue to release new material and perform live. However, he has also started to dip into the artist management scene. The Juno nominee is currently working with country singer Leanne Pearson.

“She’s a 23-year-old with just an incredible amount of energy on stage,” Pritchett says. “She just has real potential in the industry and I want to try to help her get to some places that I’ve been and even further, which would be great.”

“It’s a lot of fun because it’s a challenge I’ve never had,” Pritchett adds.

Aside from his passion for country music, Pritchett is also an avid hockey fan.

“I am a huge Canucks fan. I was the kid that slept with the little transistor radio under my pillow,” he says.

Pritchett believes the Canucks’ new head coach, John Tortorella, will be a good fit for the team.

“I think he’s fantastic. I think it’s a good thing that he’s here to be honest,” he says. “At first I didn’t know if it was a good idea, but I think he’s going to be able to take the focus off the players. The media will be looking for sound bites from him as opposed to beating up Daniel and Henrik.”

“My goal was to be every drummer for every band. I wanted to be the guy who was capable of fitting into any slot instantaneously. That was my crazy-ass goal.”

In the early 1990s, he became Spirit of the West’s first drummer, leaving him free from having to match the beats laid out by the last guy.

“I had complete freedom to invent what the drums might do,” he says.

After working with acts like Long John Baldry and an incarnation of BTO featuring Tim Bachman (“I often wondered if there were a Zeppo and Gummo Bachman somewhere in the woodwork,”) Ditrich elected to stick with his new band.

“They’re really exemplary people. They’re smarter than the average bear, they’re more artistic than the average bear, and they’re idealists.”

They were also an exception to many of the groups he’d seen who were “knock-off American bands.”

“I thought, ‘Is it not possible to do something of value that is actually reflective of the culture that I come from so that it’s honest?’ I thought if I could find that, I would stick to that and try and be one of the voices of my generation if I could,” he says. “This was delivered to me on a silver platter in essence, and so I said, ‘I’m not letting go of this. As long as they’ll have me, I’ll stay.’”

Special events and festivals manager for the District of West Vancouver for the last five years, Rosta is charged with overseeing the municipality’s upcoming annual Harmony Arts Festival, and apparently whenever the topic is raised among her fellow organizers, it’s immediately kiboshed, their fingers crossed for sunny skies.

“We don’t talk about it until it comes,” she laughs.

The 23rd edition of the Harmony Arts Festival is being held Friday, Aug. 2 through to Sunday Aug. 11 and looking through the program, it’s easy to see why. Programmers have clocked countless hours putting this year’s lineup together and the annual celebration of music, performance, cinema, visual and culinary arts, all being presented along West Vancouver’s waterfront and offering something for all ages, is bursting at the seams.

“I really enjoy seeing everyone come down to the waterfront and socialize, appreciate and enjoy the art and enjoy the music. It’s very festive,” says Rosta, 39.

One of the popular features of the festival is its Art Market. A total of 80 artists, some new and returning, and from throughout the Lower Mainland, Sea to Sky corridor and Vancouver Island, will be featured this year. “It’s an amazing lineup this year. It’s high quality, alloriginal, one-of-a-kind pieces,” says Rosta.

The Art Market jury faced a tough decision this year, seeing 188 artisans apply.

“We had jury members, art professionals from West Vancouver, and they spent an entire day going through all of the different applications,” says Rosta.

Among those chosen was West Vancouver jewelry designer Chi Cheng Lee of Chi’s Creations.

Born in Taiwan, Lee, 51, moved to New York when she was nine. Raised in an artistic family, her late father, Hung Chu Lee, made Chinese watercolour painting on silk, and her sister is a New York City-based fine artist. Lee honed her craft at Parsons School of Design, graduating in 1985. Making jewelry for 30 years, she also worked for luxury design house Harry Winston for 15 years, both in New York and Hong Kong. Lee and her husband have called the North Shore home for the last 10 years.

She’ll have pieces on display from her Stacking Rings collection, which are designed to be fun to wear and offer buyers an opportunity to wear them alone or interchangeably with others from the collection.

Lee also plans to exhibit some pieces from her Balance Collection, designed to keep wearers grounded.

“I always find it’s very important for people to have emotional connection to pieces

that they buy or that they wear because it’s so personal,” says Lee. “I would like people to wear a lot of my pieces every day, like I wear every day. There are certain things that I wear all the time. It just makes me feel together and dressed and balanced. That’s the emotion that makes people feel good.

It shouldn’t take over you, it should complement you. . . . I go for the very simple elegance and low-key, but you can be dramatic but not over the top because you should also see the person too, behind it or wearing it, so it becomes a part of you.”

While Lee took last year off, she was featured in the Harmony Arts Festival Art Market the previous five years.

“I’ve always loved the festival,” says Lee. “We used to go to the festival even before I was selling there. There’s a lot of activities for my daughter, she was very young. There’s lots of music, lots of free activities, and there’s a very family (atmosphere) and you meet your friends.”

“It’s so beautiful to do the show. It’s the best place to be, by the beach,” she adds.

The summer weather this year has been fabulous and great weather for picnics. On a perfect, balmy, evening during West Vancouver’s annual Harmony Arts Festival Aug.2-11 2013, I had the pleasure of attending the Best of the West gourmet food and wine grazing event on the Ambleside Pier, at the foot of 14th St. and Argyle Ave, where 13 North Shore restaurants paired food with 13 BC wineries. Whiteclothed tables were scattered along the wharf and a 3 piece band played as we “noshed and sipped�!

Exec. Chef Carol Chow and her team from FraĂŽche Restaurant, had personally smoked a loin of lamb and garnished it with a porcini mushroom purĂŠe, shallot mousse and rosemary oil and paired it with the red, 2011 Road 13 Seventy-four K wine with aromas of blackberry, plum and dark chocolate.

To a New Zealander or Australian, a delicious, final course, after a lamb meal is pavlova, their national meringue dessert. Well Pastry Chef Maile Deligianis, from Carmelo’s Ristorante certainly delivered that by showcasing her “ perfect pav� with a twist! It was a double chocolate pavlova with freshly whipped cream topped with chocolate sprinkles and strawberries, accompanied with the 2010 Burrowing Owl Cabernet Franc with a balanced nose of blackberries, cherries, herbs and cedar.

For my seafood kick, Mangia E Bevi Ristorante offered ravioli stuffed with scallops and apple topped with lobster, fresh tomato and vermouth.. I liked the harmonizing with the lemon, honey and lime notes of the 2012 Tantalus Riesling.

Back on shore, along Argyle Ave., during both weekends, 83 artists, under canvas, gave us the pleasure of viewing and buying their original works.

Carver Rick Harris, or Xwa-lack-tun, showed me the dorsal fin of a whale and a salmon and raven, etched in his cedar guitar.

Eric Munshaw and wife Edna Hobbs, from the Entwood Turnings, created hand-made bowls, goblets and platters with exceptional grains and imprints from wood, salvaged in the Chilliwack River Valley.

would sprout, once these lavish head-covers had no further use and were tossed to glamorously, fertilize the garden!

It was such a pleasant interlude, out of the noonday sun, to pop into the Ferry Building Landing, for one of the Art Speaks Series where photographer Peter Langer, not only showed us outstanding photos of Yemen, but gave us advice on taking improved travel photos. Yes, those wrinkles on older faces do show a life well lived!

The Grosvenor Waterfront Lounge, in Millennium Park, provided a front-row seat for sippers, as a cruise ship sailed by on her way to Alaska. There were bands playing here as well as in Lawson Park, where folk were happily lounging or dancing on the grass to the daily garden concerts, ranging from the Spirit of the West, the Brothers’ Arntzen Brass Band, the Paperboys and Dal Richards’ Orchestra.

Following the musical shows, as the sun set, films such as Funny Girl and Grease were shown.

The Harmony Arts Festival has something for everyone. Do go next year.
