Harlingen CISD’s College and Career Readiness Educator Guide outlines roles and responsibilities of district faculty and staff regarding student advisement, assessments, and preparation for college and career readiness.
The guide provides information that pertains to students’ transition years while enrolled in an HCISD campus to include:

• General information and conversations that pertain to students' endorsement interest which will begin at the elementary.
• Roles and responsibilities of elementary counselors, middle school counselors, high school counselors, college and career room advisors, CTE academy coaches, parent specialists, and academic coordinators.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
ENDORSEMENT Endorsements consist of a related series of courses that are grouped together by interest or skill set. They provide students with in-depth knowledge of a subject area. Students must select an endorsement in the ninth grade. There are 5 areas students can choose from: Arts and Humanities, Business and Industry, Multidisciplinary Studies, Public Service, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
AP AP (Advanced Placement) is a program of classes developed by the College Board to give high school students an introduction to college-level classes with the potential to gain college credit. These courses require passing an AP exam at the end of the year to gain college credit.
FAFSA The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.
Students must apply for the FAFSA every academic year for as long as they are enrolled in a college or university. Applicants must be citizens of the United States or eligible non-U.S. citizens, hold a valid Social Security number, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Alongside federal grants, loans, and workstudy aid, the FAFSA is also used to determine eligibility for state and institutional scholarships.
ARD “ARD” is an acronym for Admission, Review and Dismissal. An ARD meeting is a meeting of a group of people who help to determine whether a student is eligible for special education and develops the Individual Education Program (IEP) for eligible students.
CTE Career and Technical Education programs offer a sequence of courses that provides students with coherent and rigorous content. CTE content is aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in current or emerging professions.

ACT The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It is currently administered by ACT, a nonprofit organization of the same name. The ACT test covers four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. It also offers an optional direct writing test. The ACT test is designed for the 10th, 11th, and/or 12th grade levels to provide schools and districts with the data necessary to position students for success after high school.
HONORS Honors classes offer the same curriculum as regular classes but are tailored for high-achieving students — covering additional topics or some topics in greater depth.

ACADEMIES Harlingen CISD created academies to provide a steppingstone for students interested in getting a head start on a career upon graduating from high school. HCISD provides students with choices to include 12 indi vidualized academies - the Apprenticeship Academy, Automotive Training Academy, Busi ness Academy, Firefighter Academy, Health Science Academy, Informa tion Technology Academy, Media Arts and Communications Acad emy, Natural Resources Academy, Pre-Engineering Academy, Pre-Law Academy, Pre-Veterinary Science Academy, and the Teacher Academy.
Each of the academies includes specific fields of study, or pathways, which afford students the ability to choose one that best fits their inter ests and passions from engineering and robotics to automotive technol ogy. Within the student’s pathway of choice, HCISD teachers connect students with business profession als and experts in each of the 12 fields of study. Along with real-world experi ences, career training, and certification opportunities, HCISD students enrolled in the academies graduate college, career, and community ready.
ASVAB The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.
PAP Pre-Advanced Placement (PAP) classes are designed to give students rigorous academic experiences that will prepare them for Advanced Placement (AP) classes. The courses emphasize the academic study and performance skills to help prepare or continue the advanced learner to successfully complete the AP classes in that subject area.

Both college-bound and continuing student-ath letes must meet academic standards to partici pate in NCAA sports. While Division I and Division II schools slightly differ in their minimum standards, both require incoming students to complete at least 16 core courses in high school and earn a qualifying SAT or ACT test score. These academ ic requirements include courses in English, math, natural or physical science, and social science.

PSAT/NMSQT The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test that 10th and 11th graders take in October. Like the SAT, it measures the knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and math students learn in the classroom—the same knowledge and skills stu dents need to succeed in college and career. By taking the PSAT/NMSQT as a junior, students may meet the requirements to enter the National Merit® Scholarship Program, an academic compe tition for recognition and scholarships. Addition ally, the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10 connect students to another $300 million in college schol arships for students across major demographics.
NCAA National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), is an organization in the United States that administers intercollegiate athletics. The NCAA functions as a general legislative and administra tive authority for men’s and women’s intercol legiate athletics. It formulates and enforces the rules of play for various sports and the eligibility criteria for athletes.
PSAT 8/9 The PSAT 8/9 is the first exam in the College Board’s “SAT Suite of Assessments” and is offered to eighth and ninth graders. The purpose of the PSAT 8/9 is to establish a starting point in terms of college and career readiness as students transition to high school.
SAT The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The SAT is a multiple-choice test created and administered by the College Board. The purpose of the SAT is to measure a high school student’s readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants.
TASFA is for students who are ineligible for federal aid through FAFSA who are Texas residents, and went to high school for at least three years in the state. These include, but are not limited to, foreign nationals, legal permanent residents, and eligible non-citizens. You can only apply for either FAFSA or TASFA, not both.
TSIA2 The Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA or TSIA2) is the state-mandated placement test (Texas Education Code §51.3062) that Texas public institutions must use to determine a student’s readiness for college-level courses. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with students’ academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors to determine course selection and where students will be most successful.
TASFA The Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) is used to collect information to help determine eligibility for state financial aid programs that are administered by institutions of higher education in the state of Texas.

College admissions officers will review standardized test scores alongside high school GPA, the classes taken in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays.
