No one really knows when the first motorcycle was customised. But it probably wasn’t long after the first Harley® motorcycle rolled out of a wooden shed that riders started personalising their motorcycles. The idea really took off after WWII, when soldiers returned home, started riding clubs and began chopping parts off their bikes to make them lighter and faster, igniting the Bobber age of the 1940s and ‘50s . That paved the way for the chopper era of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and the first factory custom revolution. Pioneered by Willie G. Davidson himself in 1971, when he married a Sportster® front end to a touring frame and created the FX Super Glide® model. This was the beginning of a whole new platform — custom-style machines built in the factory and designed to be ridden hard. Over the years, it evolved from the traditional custom style of the FXRs. Then came the Softail®, with an authentic ‘40s hardtail look and a smooth ride, thanks to the hidden suspension that set a whole new standard for custom hardtail style with a modern ride.
