A number of memorable events occurred in 2015 – many surrounding the continuous fight for social justice for Black people. As a witness to the Civil Rights Movement, I understood the importance of supporting our youth in the Black Lives Matter movement as they strive to better our communities. The HBA board, members and staff are deeply committed to improving the social and economic conditions of Harlem residents and entrepreneurs. Over the years, we have advocated for changes in public policies to level the playing field and will continue to do so. Continuing the call for economic equity, we held a Black Business Matters forum which was attended by over 100 business men and women. We also continued our mission to disrupt Harlem one entrepreneur at a time. As in previous years, our dedicated staff, consultants, and volunteers assisted aspiring entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. In 2015, our collective efforts provided over 1,800 hours of intensive one-on-one assistance and delivered 25 impactful business development workshops to over 700 aspirants and business owners.
Regina & Tsurag Owner, Aaron
We are constantly seeking to provide new resources and opportunities in the community. With a grant from the Coates Foundation we implemented our first pilot of the Disrupt Harlem Code Squad. Our newest STEM initiative connects Harlem’s young adults to the NYC tech industry during an intensive 15-week training period. During the third year of our federal Community Economic Development grant we were able to aid in the creation and development of local businesses which hired over 100 low-income residents. The focus of this year’s report are the stories behind our 2015 numbers — giving you, our supporters, a chance to look at the deep commitment and passion we have for our work, as well as the vibrancy we strive to bring to the Harlem community. We will continue to grow the entrepreneurial spirit in our community and persevere in CHANGING the game, BREAKING the rules and DISRUPTING Harlem. Warmest regards,

Community Economic Development Program
12th Annual Harlem Innovation Summit
Over the last three years, the our federal Community Economic Development grant has supported HBA’s efforts to provide invaluable resources to facilitate economic growth in Harlem. With these funds, HBA has provided micro-loans to small business owners, professional individualized consultations and ecommerce website development. As a direct result, more than 100 full-time jobs have been created in the Harlem community.
Disrupt Harlem 2015 provided a night of engaging speakers and a pitch competition. Keynote speaker, Jessica O. Matthews of Uncharted Play, inspired our crowd to be disruptive in their respective fields. Our pitch competition featured five local businesses vying for the title of "Most Disruptive Harlem Business". This year’s summit was sponsored by Columbia University, Verizon, and the Harlem Community Development Corporation.

HBA has been a shining example of what it means to be a community resource. I appreciate the deliberate attention that HBA has given to the unique challenges of our business. HBA s one to one consultant, Mrs. Greer, made an otherwise arduous MWBE Certification process, painless. Now, our business is gaining nationwide attention because of our MWBE Certification and inclusion in its global directory. As a result, we are in contract with our first city agency. "

HBA has a long history of assisting small business owners. What I most appreciate about the small business services provided by HBA is their personal touch and attention to detail each small business owner is afforded. I would highly recommend HBA. "

HBA is an amazing organization! My fabulous consultant, Gina, has helped me to lay the foundation for a lucrative career in fashion! Not only is the whole staff pleasant, Gina is always willing to share resources, give honest helpful constructive feedback. She stayed at HBA until 12:30 AM just to ensure our business plans were perfect for a competition submission due that night! The dedication compassion is unmatched unparalleled! I truly thank God I found HBA! &
