After nearly two years as Maryvale’s first lay president, I am exceptionally grateful to be surrounded by so many true leaders each day. From the curious students and experienced teachers to the engaged Board of Trustees, President’s Advisory Council, volunteers and alumnae, I am constantly in awe of such dedication, hard work and vision.

As you will see in the pages ahead, these leadership stories — all rooted in Maryvale experiences — are examples for each of us to follow.

And I am no exception. I rely on your feedback and take every piece of leadership advice to heart, whether it is presented formally in a meeting or during a quick conversation on the sidelines of a game. With your feedback and leadership advice in mind, Maryvale is making some exciting changes that are designed to elevate the school’s already strong academics, programs and reputation. Let me bring you up to date: • We are in the final stages of an invigorating search for an Upper School Head, who will work closely with Donna Bridickas and Amy Belz to facilitate a seamless curriculum and program in grades six through 12.

• Meantime, Maryvale is responding to parent feedback and dedicating a full-time professional to college counseling. The current admissions director, Monica Graham, was recently appointed to this crucial role. In addition to her experience with independent school admissions, Monica has enjoyed much success with college placements through an independent business.

• Joining our staff this past winter was Heather Harlan-Warnack as Maryvale’s new communications and marketing director. Heather brings a unique blend of experience in public relations, development and media. She is best known for her award-winning work as a journalist at the Baltimore Business Journal as well as for her appearances on WBAL-TV and WBAL Radio.

• Working with Heather is Jordan Oliver ’09, who was recently hired as a communications and admissions coordinator. Jordan returned to campus last fall after graduating from High Point University, where she double majored in journalism and religion.

In addition to bolstering Maryvale’s already strong leadership team, we are debuting an exciting new initiative this fall: The Maryvale Leadership Institute.

Under the direction of Mary Ellen Rector Fise ’74, the institute will expose all students to leadership lessons that will be introduced in Advisory, through age-appropriate assemblies, grade events or field trips. Seniors will have the option to take an elective course, focused on leadership. (Learn more on the next page.) In the end, we are confident that this new program will give Maryvale graduates a valuable edge in college and beyond, allowing them to make a positive difference in the world.

We all must lead sometime. I am humbled by the opportunity to do so at Maryvale and I continue to learn from the examples of the strong individuals who have defined this school. This past month, Maryvale and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur suddenly lost a visionary leader, Sr. Bernadette Glodek, a member of the Search Committee for Maryvale’s President two years ago.

With gratitude for the inspiration of Sr. Bernadette and countless others, I thank you and wish you a well-deserved spring.

Maryvale prepares girls with college-like offerings

It’s not uncommon for Maryvale students to organize multiple fundraisers in the name of social justice. Or to stand up confidently at Community Homeroom and make an announcement before a crowd of 400. Or to politely question the reasoning behind an administrative policy change.

There’s no doubt: Maryvale girls have leadership skills. The faculty and staff have empowered students in grades six through 12 to take charge in preparation for life beyond the 115-acre Greenspring Valley campus.

But President Tracey H. Ford wants to formally nurture and develop those leadership skills, giving girls the confidence to take care of themselves while making a difference in the world. With this goal in mind, Maryvale officially will debut its Leadership Institute this fall with accomplished businesswoman and alumna Mary Ellen Rector Fise ’74 at its helm.

“When I was probably 30, I heard Ellen Goodman speak,” Tracey recalled. “She said, ‘If a woman cannot support herself, she is one man away from poverty.’”

Regardless of the personal and professional paths that Maryvale students take, Tracey wants them to be ready and armed with the leadership skills that the institute will instill.

As part of the program, girls in all grades will be exposed to leadership lessons presented through guest speakers, class discussions and school-wide events, Mary Ellen said.

Seniors will have the opportunity to take a half-credit, one-semester leadership course that will meet as a class and independently. It is specifically designed to teach students about their leadership styles; skills such as communications and strategic planning; tools such as résumé preparation, interviewing techniques and manners; as well as ethics, project development and evaluation.

The entire school is expected to read an assigned leadership book this summer. This book will be discussed in all Advisory classes this fall.

Possible readings for the summer or the course include “Corner Office” by Adam Bryant, “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead” by Sheryl Sandberg and “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.

approach. It’s no surprise, then, that she has refined the idea of the Maryvale Leadership Institute with the help of her President’s Advisory Council, faculty and staff.

While the details are being finalized, the building blocks are in place to kick off the program.

Mike Vogrin, Maryvale’s Christian Service coordinator, said he is pleased with the addition and has been “pushing” for a more formal leadership program for years.

Through the school’s nearly 20 community service opportunities that fall under the umbrella of the Social Justice Coalition (SoJuCo), more than 70 students now have the chance to flex their leadership muscle on campus.

Six of those students collectively head up all SoJuCo offerings, while the others may take a leadership planning role within each service group.

This leadership structure, which is overseen by Mike, allows the girls to test out their planning, organizational and public speaking skills. As winter gives way to spring, SoJuCo student leaders have planned a “lock-in’ (sleepover in the gym without the use of electricity) to raise awareness about the Fuel Fund of Maryland; visits with intellectually disabled individuals through Gallagher Services; and a Stop Hunger Now event, designed to feed 10,000 vulnerable families around the world.

“I think it teaches them to empower others and engage others in leadership opportunities,” Mike said.

But community service is not the only area in which students can currently test their leadership skills. Upper School teacher Zac Coyle heads up Model United Nations, which offers another place to develop and hone leadership styles. And Upper School teacher Melissa Beljous oversees the VIP Club, Valuing Individual Preferences, where the girls of diversity have a voice and additional chances to lead.

“They have the opportunity to lead in everything that we offer,” said Zac of the students. “On a sports team, you have your captains, but you have your unsung heroes, who carry the

team spirit — the work horses. Every one of our student clubs has leadership of some kind.”

Maryvale leadership options go beyond these programs, though. Zac also infuses leadership in existing classroom lessons. This past winter, the economics teacher taught his students about entrepreneurship by dividing them into two different competing groups or companies. The girls had to write business plans, apply for loans from the Maryvale Business Office, sell and market their goods, manage inventory and turn a profit.

The products: Hot breakfast items made daily for weeks.

In the end, Zac’s students netted enough money to provide microloans to Tanzanian women who lack outside income for their families.

Melissa allows the girls to use their leadership skills in her classroom as well. Whether it is making a brochure or creating a PowerPoint presentation, the girls are encouraged to work together — just like in the workplace.

“I am so into group projects and learning from one another,” she said.

[ Girl Power ] Despite the leadership opportunities available at Maryvale, the girls are hungry for more. Juniors Allie and Amanda Weis squealed with excitement when told of the upcoming Leadership Institute.

As seniors in the fall, they will be eligible for the leadership course. Both plan to sign up for the new offering, which will take students into corporations as well as small businesses, where they will catch glimpses of strategic plans in action.

“I think that course would be helpful when you go to college,” Amanda said.

The Weis twins are front and center when it comes to leadership at Maryvale. They are best known this year for their hard work on behalf of the Fuel Fund of Maryland.

The girls planned a Fuel Fund awareness week in February, which ended with the “lock-in” inside Rector Gymnasium.

Eighty-three girls spent the night in the gym without the benefit of electricity and the comforts of home. Their goal of raising awareness about the Fuel Fund was accomplished on a greater scale after event coverage from WMAR-TV and WBAL Radio aired.

What did this teach the Weis girls? “I’ve learned not to be afraid to try new things,” Allie said.

Zac has enjoyed watching Allie and Amanda grow as student leaders, particularly with their Fuel Fund efforts.

Maryvale alumnae are easily identified. They are intelligent, hardworking and confident. Above all, though, they are caring and humble. As a result, many of these women can be found in executive-level positions, at the helm of volunteer organizations or around the table of high-powered boards. They exude leadership in all of their pursuits.

Sherry Pudloski ’85, Mary Ellen Rector Fise ’74 and Kathleen Birrane ‘77 are no exception. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that each credits her success to the strong academic and Christian service foundation at the heart of a Maryvale education.

Communications Queen

Sherry Pudloski ’85

As vice president of external communications for Pfizer Inc. in New York, Sherry Pudloski oversees more than 20 people.

But her leadership reach within the pharmaceutical giant is far greater than her direct reports.

As the chair of the United States Women’s Council at Pfizer, Sherry is able to positively impact an estimated 10,000 women across the country.

The council was established to provide a mentoring program for women at Pfizer, encourage the promotion of women into executive ranks and support the 13 colleague resource groups throughout the U.S. Sherry adeptly balances her responsibilities with the council and those of her department. As vice president of external communications, she is “head of communications for the global, innovative pharmaceutical business.” The Maryvale alumna is also charged with looking after Pfizer’s reputation globally.

Sherry was busy this winter with a new Pfizer campaign, “Get Old.” The brainchild of her team, the campaign was designed to help people rethink how they age.

Employed by Pfizer in different capacities since 2009, Sherry picked the company for a reason. “The most exciting part is that I can help someone have a better life,” she said. “I chose to work at Pfizer because it has a social purpose as part of its business plan.”

A Duke University graduate, Sherry recently traced her career achievements back to her Maryvale beginnings.

“I had experiences that led me to believe that I could do anything that I set my mind to,” said Sherry, who was student body president in the Upper School. “Maryvale was a place where it was safe to try anything.”

It is this early belief in her abilities that keeps Sherry thinking about her next steps and ultimate career goals.

“I have an ambition to sit at the executive level of a company,” said Sherry, explaining that she wants to be one of the top decision makers.

Whether this is with her current employer or another organization, one thing is certain: “I want to stay in a space where I can see the higher social purpose,” she said.

When Sherry isn’t busy with Pfizer, she is happily filling the role as wife and mother. She also finds time to teach eighth grade religious education at her parish and serve on the Maryvale Board of Trustees. ■

Pioneering Professional

Mary Ellen Rector Fise ’74

As Mary Ellen Rector Fise sat patiently, waiting recently for a meeting to start in Room 301 of the Castle, the accomplished professional recalled the classes that she had taken in that same cozy space.

Mary Ellen reflected on eighth grade lessons learned and 10th grade American Foreign Policy assignments completed.

But now the roles are reversed. Mary Ellen, a former trustee, has returned to campus as an incoming teacher and director of the Maryvale Leadership Institute (See story, Page 3).

With her expansive business background and leadership roles, Mary Ellen is perfectly poised to head up the newly created institute, said Tracey H. Ford, Maryvale’s president.

Her résumé is impressive. Currently a consultant specializing in strategic planning, leadership development, research and writing, Mary Ellen is also an attorney, author and former college professor.

Her long list of accomplishments includes a stint as the associate director of the Office of Research and Planning for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It was in this position where she was charged with the challenging task of managing the multiyear research and strategic planning effort examining schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Perhaps Mary Ellen is best recognized in the business world, though, for her work as general counsel for the Consumer

Federation of America from 1984-2002. In this role, she was responsible for representing consumers on a variety of issues before Congress and the regulatory agencies. Her specialties encompass children’s safety, product safety, standards development, indoor air quality and environmental consumer risks.

These specialties led her to academia, where Mary Ellen taught upper-level courses — for both undergraduate and graduate credit — in consumer product safety and consumer law at Boston University and University of Maryland, College Park.

This expertise also propelled her into publishing. Mary Ellen is the co-author of “The Childwise Catalogue: A Consumer Guide to Buying the Safest and Best Products for Your Children,” which has seen three editions through HarperCollins. She also has served on corporate boards, including the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the American National Standards Institute. Further, she broke gender barriers when she became the first woman president

The alumna and married mother of two grown children received her law degree from the University of Baltimore; she also holds a master’s degree in Church Ministry, with a concentration in congregational leadership, from the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary & University.

One of seven children, Mary Ellen and many siblings attended Maryvale collectively from 1958-1974.

“Returning to Maryvale is kind of in my DNA. I’m very excited to be back and working with the students and faculty,” she said. ■

Law & Order Attorney Kathleen Birrane feels like she is experiencing her third career.

The accomplished Maryvale alumna is now happily settled in the insurance and reinsurance sector as well as litigation practice group at DLA Piper in Mount Washington. Considered the largest law firm in the world, DLA Piper is the perfect place for Kathleen now, she said recently.

The attorney is especially enjoying the ability to participate in some pro bono work and the opportunity to become involved in the service projects offered through DLA Piper.

Kathleen came to DLA Piper in 2012 from MLF Financial Cos. where she was senior vice president and general counsel.

She recently described this five-year stint as an exciting career challenge because it took her into the “C-suite.”

“As much as I loved that, I wanted to be back in private practice,” she said. “I wanted the ability to do pro bono work again.”

It is Kathleen’s desire to help others and work for the public good that swayed her decision to take the position as principal counsel for the Maryland Insurance Administration back in 2002. This was shortly after she had made partner at Kramon & Graham.

“I was able to use my skills and knowledge for the public good,” she said. “I treasure that time for that reason. It was also an exhausting time.”

Kathleen decided to go to law school on a whim, after pursuing interests in journalism and psychology. A graduate of Notre Dame of Maryland University and University of Maryland School of Law, Kathleen knows she picked the perfect profession for her skill set.

“I guess I had an affinity for the law,” she said. “It was the right choice for me. The three years I had in law school were some of the three most academically invigorating years of my life.”

She credits Maryvale for successfully preparing her for law school and her professional endeavors.

Maryvale teachers, especially Carol Malone, were very influential on her outlook.

Kathleen served as principal counsel at the administration for five years, working with three different governors, including current Gov. Martin O’Malley.

“She was the best teacher I ever had,” she said of Malone.

“She was just inspirational. She made the world a bigger and brighter place by introducing us to literature.”

It was O’Malley’s father-in-law, former Attorney General J. Joseph Curran Jr. who worked closely with the Maryland Insurance Administration when Kathleen first joined the organization.

Kathleen also remembers Carol fondly for allowing a controversial piece to be communicated in a school publication. Authored by Kathleen, the article protested what she considered the unfair firing of another teacher.

She was faced with some controversial issues during her tenure in public service, including the proposed conversion of CareFirst from a nonprofit to a for-profit company.

Malone’s actions gave Kathleen an early acceptance and tolerance for different points of view. “That was a statement and that has always stayed with me,” the alumna said. ■

Highlights&Spotlights The Baltimore Sun highlights Maryvale’s ‘cyber’ days, iPads Maryvale students had plenty of snow days this past winter. They quickly learned, though, that these days off weren’t simply for sleeping and sledding.

On March 2, The Baltimore Sun showcased Maryvale’s cyber days, highlighting how the girls are well-versed in checking Edline for their updated assignments and plowing through additional work to keep pace with curriculum requirements.

Maryvale’s lacrosse program grabs local headlines

DLA Piper and The Daily Record host winter reception

Baltimore Magazine’s March issue featured Maryvale’s very own Miranda Ibello ’15 as one of the area’s lacrosse “Rising Stars.”

In the article entitled, “Just the Lax: The Ultimate Lacrosse Guide,” Ibello, a junior, said lacrosse “has taught me time management and teamwork.” The magazine’s Senior Contributing Writer Mike Unger also identified Maryvale’s lacrosse team in the “Teams to Watch 2014.”

Maryvale’s Board of Trustees hosted a reception Feb. 4 at the Law Offices of DLA Piper in Mount Washington. Honoring Maryvale’s President Tracey H. Ford, the event was sponsored

by DLA Piper and The Daily Record. The event helped to raise awareness about the amazing academics and exciting offerings at the school.

Maryvale students take pride in their individual athletic pursuits A Maryvale day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. With morning traffic, after-school activities and the evening ride home, it’s hard to imagine where to fit in extra hours at the gym. But dedicated student athletes Theresa Terpos ’15, Christie Golden ’15, Ginny Jeppi ’14, Lindsay Fink ’14 and Ashley Shobert ’15 do just that.

Their passion and drive for individual, off-campus sports has benefited them in the classroom and set them apart.

With the intense winter we’ve experienced this year, junior Theresa Terpos can’t seem to escape the ice.

“My friends talk about slipping on the ice in the parking lot, and I’ll sarcastically ask if they’re okay.”

They know they’re merely humoring her.

Ice skating since she was 5 years old, Tess — as she prefers to be called — has certainly experienced her share of falls.

“I’ve definitely had some hard falls, but when I was younger, I wasn’t scared of anything,” she said. “I think about what I’m doing sometimes and can’t understand how it works. Skating has just become second nature.”

Tess started competing when she was in the second grade.

“With skating, I always knew that something felt right and that I was supposed to do that,” she said.

From third grade to the time she entered seventh, Tess was up and skating before school started for 6 a.m. practices.

“I don’t really remember a time when I wasn’t skating,” she said. “This has always just kind of been my life.”

Although she’s no longer waking up before dawn to practice, Tess’ schedule is close to that of an Olympian.

The main difference: she attends regular school.

“There are so many things that can happen,” she said. “If you get injured and really can’t skate anymore, then that’s your life, and so what do you have left?”

On top of balancing the Maryvale workload, Tess practices for two hours every day after school, and on Sundays for her club team’s fundraising shows.

She trains twice a week with an off-ice trainer, working on agility and strength. In the summer, she incorporates ballet lessons.

“There are so many things you have to give up,” she said. “But there has never been any question of whether it’s worth it because there’s so much I’ve learned through it all. It’s a constant reminder of your capabilities.”

If you’re a competitive cheerleader like junior Christie Golden, you get two weeks out of the year to yourself.

“I could have gotten my driver’s license in October, but I don’t have any time. Cheerleading has affected my life a lot, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make,” she said.

Cheering competitively since she was in the third grade, Christie can be found at the gym on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays where she practices for as many as four hours a day.

“I don’t know life without it,” she said.

Cheerleading is categorized in one of two ways: sideline cheerleading or All Star cheerleading.

“People say cheering isn’t a sport, but All Star is our sport,” Christie said. “Your life goal as an All Star cheerleader is to win Worlds.”

Hosted by the United States All Star Federation (USASF) in Orlando every year, the Cheerleading Worlds is an international competition that showcases the highest level of talent and athleticism.

Christie has been going since 2009 and dreams of winning one day.

But it’s not the competition itself that Christie loves most about the sport. It’s the traveling.

“This past weekend, we were supposed to go to Georgia, but it got canceled because of the weather,” she said. “Next weekend, I’m going to Dallas and after that, it’s Alabama. I have so many friends all over the country that I talk to on a daily basis.”

With all the talk of travel, it’s no surprise that Christie is the “flyer” on her team. But this time, she’s the one who’s literally flying through the air.

When asked if she has ever been dropped, Christie answered nonchalantly: “Yeah, but I don’t even think twice about it. I had a concussion last year, but it wasn’t that bad.”

It’s going to take a lot to stop Christie from cheerleading; that she made clear.

“It’s literally a priority to me—even to my mom,” she said with a smile.

It’s a wonder senior Ginny Jeppi is walking on a recent Monday afternoon. The day before, she had competed in a 50-mile mountain bike race and rode for four hours the weekend before to prepare.

Out of 700 competitors, Ginny raced in a class of 20 women.

“I love getting out there and pushing myself to do things I never thought I could do,” she said. “I love making myself catch the girl ahead of me.”

Ginny’s mom (Mary Carol Newell Jeppi ’78) used to race mountain bikes and her uncle is a coach. At the beginning of her junior year, Ginny decided to compete in her first race. She placed second.

“My ultimate goal is to race in the Olympics for mountain biking,” she said.

But Ginny also rides in cyclocross races, where she competes at the pro level.

“It’s a 40-minute race on a two mile course,” she explained. “There’s grass and hills and dirt and gravel and there are also obstacles that are set up to make you get off your bike, pick it up, and run with it over barriers or up a hill.”

At many of the races, Ginny is the only teenage girl.

“You have to be confident in yourself,” she said.

“You have to think, ‘I’m the best,’ even if you’re not.

You have to think, ‘I can do this. I can hang with these girls. Just go for it.’”

As far as preparing for these races, Ginny typically rides for two to four hours a day.

“I’m shooting for the national championships this summer for mountain biking, which would lead to racing in the World Cup,” she said. “I want to race for the United States. I want to have a red, white and blue jersey. If you get good results at the World Cup, then the next step is the Olympics.”

Ginny currently races on a team and is working in a bike shop.

“You really have to budget your time. You have to think, ‘tomorrow morning I’m getting up at 4 a.m. and (Continues on next page) MESSENGER / SPRING 2014 / 13

must be in my best physical condition by 10 a.m.,’” she said. “You have to know you’re not going to the movies Friday night.”

A few years ago, junior Ashley Shobert was riding her pony before being flipped off — a mile from her farm.

But that’s a price she’s willing to pay. After she wins a gold in the Olympics, Ginny would like to coach one day or be a television announcer for a race like the Tour de France. She plans to attend Colorado Mesa University on a scholarship for mountain biking and cyclocross.

“It was really scary, but I wasn’t hurt. I got right back up and rode home,” she said. “I’ve been around horses my whole life; even if I tried to stop, I know I’d end up going back to it.”

Senior Lindsay Fink trained with a junior Olympic gymnastics program for roughly a decade, ending in the 10th grade.

She started taking lessons four years ago and is working with a trainer who is coaching Olympic riders in Mississippi.

“We’d work out four to five times a week for four and a half hours each session,” she said.

After a back injury in the ninth grade took Lindsay out for half the season, she realized she liked being away from the gym.

She stuck with her program until suffering a bad concussion after falling on her head amidst a flip in the 10th grade. After that, she decided she wanted a less competitive program, so she switched to another team.

“I really like working on the beam,” she said. “I’m little, so my balance is good.”

From falling straight down and “splitting the beam” as they call it, to rolling her ankles, Lindsay always gets back up.

“Knowing I only have four inches of space centers my focus,” she said. “I’ve definitely had some scary falls, but at the same time, it’s made me more confident.”

With a more flexible schedule, Lindsay now has time to coach younger children. When asked if she has ever considered becoming an Olympic coach, she was quick to reply.

“I’ve been at that intense level before, and I realized it wasn’t something that necessarily always made me happy,” she said. “I would be able to see how hard they were working, but at the same time, I would know how much they were missing out on.”

So for now, she’ll stick with coaching kids — those who simply love the sport and want to have fun.

“It’s just one of those things I’ve known my entire life and it’s shaped me as a person,” she said. “It’s a part of me.”

She’s already told her mom that when she has kids, they’re probably going to be in the gym doing gymnastics.

“They at least have to try it,” she said, laughing.

Ashley got her first pony when she was 5 years old.

By age 7, she had taught herself to ride and jump.

Ashley’s passion isn’t necessarily competing, though; she enjoys prepping horses for other riders.

“At the beginning of the school year, I did the Maryland Horse and Pony Show, which is a big Maryland show,” she said. “The one day, I rode five horses before 7:30 a.m. and by the end of the day, I had ridden 17.”

When Ashley isn’t schooling other horses, you can find her riding her own. She lives on a farm with three horses and a donkey named George.

“Being able to connect with an animal of that size, and being able to communicate without words —that’s one of the things I love most,” she said.

Ashley takes two-hour lessons after school in the fall and spring, but come summer, she rides all day, every day.

“I would love to make a career out of training horses one day because that’s what I like to do and that’s what I’m good at,” she said. ■

Thunderous applause filled even the lonely nooks of McCarthy Theater during a recent Community Homeroom after art teacher Kim Kozak announced that one of her students had won a regional contest.

Anna Karwacki, a senior, bested more than 300 students statewide to win the “Love Your Tree” contest, sponsored by the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt. The student’s work, “Cherry Blossom,” is being reproduced in an effort to help the center spread its message about positive body image and self-esteem.

The award announcement was fresh off Karwacki’s acceptance to the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she plans to combine her stellar abilities in science, technology, engineering and math [STEM] with her raw artistic talent to study video game development.

We recently caught up with this bright, unpretentious student, who talked about her Maryvale experience and plans for the future.

Q: How did you decide on RIT? A: I want to major in video game development and design. RIT is ranked fourth in the country in this major. It’s above MIT.

Q: How do you feel about leaving Maryvale and moving on?

A: I am excited, for sure, because it’s going to be a totally different environment. I’ll finally be out of a uniform. But, it’s terrifying because I have to dress myself every day!

Q: How did you pick gaming?

A: I’ve always liked video games. My first video game was Pokemon.

I also like art. And I recently took a programming course. I learned I am very good at it.

Q: Tell us about this online college programming course you took this fall, while maintaining your Maryvale classes?

A: It was a programming class at Towson University. It was fun.

Programming is like a puzzle. It’s like Sudoku. If I listened to music, it was like a game in itself.

Q: If you could design a video game right now, what would it be?

A: I want a game where it brings the user into the story — like a Zombie Apocalypse but you play the game as yourself.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: I like to watch YouTube videos, gaming videos. I like to draw and play video games. I would like to hang out with my friends more, but it’s hard because I live so far away.

Q: Where do you live?

A: I live in Sykesville. It’s about an hour each way. I drive about 60 miles each school day.

Q: Do you have siblings?

A: I am an only child, but I have a dog.

Q: Are either of your parents involved in technology professionally?

A: My dad is an engineer. He does a lot of stuff. He helped me with my programming course if I got stuck.

Q: What are you planning on doing this summer?

A: I want to get an internship. The laptop I need to get [for RIT] is pretty expensive.

Q: What has Maryvale taught you?

A: They kind of rely on you. Being reliable — they’ve taught that to me here.

News&Notes 1950s Joan Redel Cala ’54 writes: “After living on our Kingsville farm for many years, we decided to sell and move to a condo at Spenceola Farms in Forest Hill. With half the space of our Kingsville home and no land to tend, we are able to live like ordinary people again and enjoy some leisure time! The farm was a great place to raise our four girls, three of whom joined 4H and had great careers raising sheep and horses. They also raised an award-winning garden, competing at all the local fairs during the summer. All are now married with wonderful husbands, blessing my husband, Robert, and me with 13 grandchildren.

Now we are starting to dote on five great-grandchildren and counting.

My oldest daughter, Patti, has four children. Her oldest is a lieutenant in the Navy and a physical therapist on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. Second, is a daughter who is a doctor in her second year of residency at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Next is another daughter who is studying audiology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Number four is a junior in high school.

Our second daughter, Mary Jo, passed away five years ago after a long fight with liver cancer. She left us with three grandchildren, one of whom is married with two children. She and her husband are nurses at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Towson. The middle girl is a doctor, residing in Tucson, Ariz. Her plan is to become a surgeon.

My third daughter, Kathleen, lives in Southern Maryland. Her twin daughters are married with one child each. Her third daughter has recently married and is a radiologist in St. Mary’s County.

Kimberly, my youngest daughter, is a nurse and lives in Forest Hill with her husband and three children. The oldest is a sophomore nursing student at Stevenson University. Her younger daughter is a sophomore at North Harford High School. Her son is in elementary school.”

During a recent winter visit, Pat Gavin Phebus ’56 spent several days with classmate Artus Nagy Boyd ’56 at Artus’ home in Nokomis, Fla. The two spent some time planning a class reunion.

Mary Castagna Carrillo ’58 was invited by Consulate General Roland Yorke to meet the Hon. Dean Barrow, prime minister of Belize, at the Inspiration Center Gala in Los Angeles last year. In the year 2000, Mary began her service work in a Belize village. Back in the U.S., Mary recently completed more than 2,000 volunteer hours for the USO at the San Diego Airport, welcoming returning vets with a meal and a hug.

1960s The 50th Reunion for the Class of 1963 at the annual Jubilee Luncheon last May added to Mary Nagle Hogan’s fond memories of Maryvale. The former classmates had lots of laughs talking about old times.

Virginia Benson ’65 is enjoying life in Charlotte, N.C. Jinni is a consultant for Loudoun Consulting, a data center planning and relocation organization. She will welcome her seventh grandchild in August.

More happy grandmother news from Ceci Muth Herman ’65. Her son Bob and his wife Amy welcomed twins, Charlie and Chase, on January 19. “Gran” says that everyone is doing fine!

Patricia J. Mitchell ’65, retired vice president of global sales operations for IBM Global Technology Services, corporate director, consultant and community leader, has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council. PJ is a past chair of Maryvale’s Board of Trustees.

Living in St. Thomas, Pa., on a 150-acre farm, Diane Miller Fusting ’66 is a retired florist, but continues her interest in gardening as president of the Chambersburg Garden Club. She also enjoys spending time with her five children and seven grandchildren.

Anne Powell Cowan ’67 reports that she completed another cross-country bicycle ride last summer, her fourth-long fundraising trip for the benefit of the Wellmont Hospice House, in Bristol, Tenn., where she lives. This time, she was fully self-supported! This means that Anne carried all her own gear on the bike and camped along the route. Anne, husband Bennett and a friend began their ride in Anacortes, Wash., in June 2013 and rode to Bar Harbor, Maine, arriving in early September. They then drove to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and rode their bicycles to Baltimore where they had left their car! The trio rode more than 4,800 miles during the three-month trip. Anne has now raised more than $135,000 for the Hospice House. Anne and Ben are both “retired,” but are busier than ever volunteering. Their three sons are all thriving in their respective professions and the Cowans are enjoying time with their two granddaughters.

1970s It was so nice to see Chip Rouse ’70 at Maryvale last fall. “I am so proud to see all the good things happening there and want to make a better effort to stay connected,” she wrote.

It’s hard with her busy career as chair of Business Communication at Stevenson University. Chip loves seeing Maryvale alums like Annie McCoach ’12, also at Stevenson, and is proud of their excellence. She is the advisor of the student newspaper, teaches a class in journalism to sophomores and oversees all the interns in the major. On a personal note, Chip’s son, Bryan Read, is the athletic trainer at Dulaney High School in Timonium and is married to a chef. From time to time, Chip catches up with Cecilia Filippelli Hazel ’70.

Maria Allwine ’71 (Janine Maria Rychwalski) and her husband, Richard, moved to Florence, Italy, in January. Maria obtained her Italian citizenship two years ago—as they had been planning this move for years. Richard is a landscape painter and will paint in Italy as he has always dreamed.

The Allwines sold their home and possessions so they can live a life free of the consumer trappings of American culture. Maria is thrilled to have finally retired from the rat race. She may become involved in activism at some later date as there is a Green Party office in Florence.

Leslie Scheller Lineberry ’73 was expected to become a first time “Grandmom” of a little granddaughter in April. Except for the fact that her daughter lives in Kentucky, Leslie is thrilled.

She wishes her classmates well and, like all of us, is looking forward to spring and the return of warmer weather!

1980s Stacey Jackson ’81 has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council. She is the senior vice president and general counsel of DavCo Restaurants Inc. Leslie Karsner Dasch ’82 shares good news about her family business, which is growing by leaps and bounds. In 2012, a new division of Yes Hotel Services Inc. where Leslie is the owner and president, was launched. The company, which provides staffing, cleaning and marble maintenance services to luxury hotels and resorts, is based in Winter Park, Fla., with an office in Fairfax, Va. On a personal note, Leslie and her husband, Richard, are transitioning to a home in Winter Park as well. They love the home they recently bought on Lake Virginia, next to Rollins College. They are delighted because the property has four cottages on it: one for Leslie and Richard, one for Leslie’s mom, one for her dad and a guest cottage. The Daschs are in the midst of renovating so it’s been a busy, busy time! The plan is to keep their vacation house on the gulf in Yankeetown, Fla., as it’s a true getaway. Leslie has enjoyed watching Maryvale grow from afar.

News&Notes Mary Mitcherling Hurdle ’90 and Danielle Phelps ’94 recently visited New York to participate in Alexandra’s Baptism.

Jaime Bramble Schell ’94 and her husband, Andrew, announced the arrival of their twins as their big news of 2013. Paul Francis Sterling and Marea Margaret Elinor were born on Sept. 18, 2013. The Schell family lives in the Rittenhouse neighborhood of Philadelphia. Jaime is accepting occasional freelance writing projects while she is home with the delightful duo.

Heather Klink ’84, former trustee, has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council. She is the deputy general counsel of FTI Consulting Inc. On Feb. 24, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley appointed Colleen Cavanaugh ’86 to serve as a trial court judge for the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. Colleen has served for the past seven years as a judge for the Orphans’ Court of Baltimore County, including as chief judge from 2007 to 2009. She also has worked in private practice for more than 20 years, where she has specialized most recently in family law and civil litigation. Colleen received a law degree from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and an undergraduate degree from American University. She serves on the Board of Directors of Turn Around Inc., an organization that provides counseling and support services to individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Mia Scharper ’87 shared that after nearly 10 years at Booz Allen Hamilton as a management consultant, she left to become the communications manager at Johns Hopkins Medicine International. Mia is loving her new job, especially the exposure to health care within a global context.

She supports international communications but is not based internationally. Johns Hopkins Medicine International is located in Fells Point, just a short distance from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

On April 5, 2014 Claudine Carozza Biddison ’89 supported daughter Katelyn as she led “Katelyn’s Crusaders” in the Maryland Walk to Cure Diabetes.

Thanks to the generous support of Katelyn’s family and friends during the past two years, she has successfully raised over $25,000 for diabetes research. Last year, the Biddison family rallied more than 40 friends and family members to walk with Katelyn for this great event. Katelyn was touched to see so many of her supporters clad in red Katelyn’s Crusader shirts. The goal this year was to have more than 50 walkers and raise $15,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Tody Hairston-Fuller ’89 has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council. She is the coordinator of evaluation and assessment at the Baltimore City Health Department.

Congratulations to Kelly Mace ’95 and her spouse, Shirley Disney, who were married at Chase Court in downtown Baltimore in March 2013. The reception was catered by Kristin Olsson, mom of Maryvale grad, Dana Olsson Collins ’00. Shirley is a detective with the Baltimore City Police Department. Kelly, formerly of the English Department at Maryvale, now teaches at Sparrows Point High School. Kelly’s son Gavin is now 7.

We spotted Jenny Weber Hauser ’95 and her three little ones at Maryvale’s annual Spooky Stories in the Castle event last fall. Jenny and her husband, Ben, welcomed baby William to their growing family on July 31, 2013. Andrew, 4, and Lucy, 2, are loving their little brother! News&Notes It’s time to introduce to the world, baby Elinor Ann Kemmerer “Ella,” born a few weeks early on Feb. 20. Mom, Christina Enoch Kemmerer ’99, and husband Eli are thrilled. Ella is so sweet and doing great. Thanks to everyone for their support!

Christina is the director of the Theatre Arts Program and co-chair of the Arts Department at the St. Paul’s Schools in Lutherville. Christina also has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council.

Last fall, Chris had lunch with Class of 1999 classmates, Jessica Milesky Merritt, Sophia Karsos, Marisa Nimon, Ashley North Pearce, also a new mom, Anne Wharam Thomas, now a mother of three, and Anna Barrueco Wong.

It was so good to catch up with the girls. They are getting excited for the Class of Mighty Fine ’99ers’ 15-Year Reunion!

Marisa Nimon ’99 has had a big year! She launched a small business called Living the Dream Photography in Red River, N.M. This has been a life-long dream for Marisa, and she is very excited. Marisa and her husband added to the baby boom in the Class of ’99 by welcoming a little girl in April. We hope to see Marisa at the reunion in May. Katie Saltysiak Borrison ’99 and her husband, Matt, were excited to welcome twin girls, Violet and Annie, on Dec. 20, 2013! The girls were quite a surprise by arriving five weeks early. What a great Christmas present! Katie is hoping that one day they will also become Maryvale girls!

Living in Houston, Susanne Tumolo Foley ’99 is a stay-at-home mom to four pre-schoolers: Cooper, 5, Anna and Molly, 3 ½-year-old twins, and Haydon, 2. Susanne’s husband, Chris, works for his family’s insurance brokerage firm.

2000s Jennifer Hanley Armstrong ’00 has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council. She is a former faculty member of Calvert School.

Kate Nolan Bryden ’00 has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council. She is the president of AMK Partners LLC, a development and construction consulting firm.

Cris Lima Thuerrauch ’01 welcomed a baby girl to her family in 2013. Samantha Luiz Thuerrauch was born on March 28, 2013. Big brother Brayden loves her dearly. Cris can’t wait for Samantha to be a Maryvale girl!

Tenley Baldwin ’01 married David Hough on May 3, 2013 at the Antrim 1844 in Taneytown.

She is employed as tech support for Exelon, the parent company of BGE, and is working on a master’s degree in Applied Information Technology at Towson University.

Candace Zorn ’01 has relocated temporarily to the suburbs of Chicago for her husband’s job. She says that it’s fun seeing a lot of her classmate, Elyse Vardoulakis ’01, who lives in downtown Chicago. Candace works as an associate dentist in a family-oriented dental practice. She and her husband, Joshua Snyder, will be moving back to the East Coast this summer and likely settling in the Harford County area. She plans to join her father’s dental practice in Hereford, where Maryvale alums are always welcome. Candace is looking forward to moving back, so that she can be involved with the Alumnae Association.

Sunni Houston Scott ’99 and her husband, Lance, welcomed their first child on May 14, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore. Her daughter, Saylor Huntley Scott, weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces, 19 1/2 inches long and was born at 11:52 a.m. Sunni says, “She’s the light of my life. Being a mommy is the best gift ever! Before you know it, it will be time for Saylor to apply to Maryvale.”

Melissa Grossi Breslin ’99, the associate director of development in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine, has joined Maryvale’s President’s Advisory Council.

Mulligan Burns ’01 and Lauren Benzing Merrill ’01 visited their classmate Sheridan Costa ’01, who moved back to Baltimore after living in San Francisco for several years. Sheridan bought an old convent on Eastern Avenue in Fells Point and turned it into an art gallery, The Alchemy of Art. Lauren says, “It's really cool!”

“We haven’t added anyone new to the family this year, however we did grow in another way,” reports Valarie Stewart Garappolo ’01. Thanks to husband Philip’s ambition, Perry Hall CrossFit opened in January. This is a new CrossFit gym in the heart of Perry Hall, bringing excellent coaches and training to a wonderful community. The Garappolo’s got into CrossFit last year and have seen what an amazing opportunity it affords those who participate. They just wanted to share the love! Phil and his dad are marketing and managing the gym. Valarie works full time in IT at Erickson Living and serves as IT support for the gym.

Jessica Vitrano Randisi ’01 is busy at Maryvale where she teaches Upper School English and serves as the theatre director. She also coaches the Varsity Lacrosse Team and was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March. If that’s not enough, Jessica is the proud new mother of baby Connor Joseph Randisi.

News&Notes Filippelli ’68 and Kathleen Filippelli ’72, enjoyed a beautiful celebration with family and friends. Guests included Maryvale friends Lauren Parker Kelly ’02, Kate Nolan Bryden ’00 and Sue Smith Nolan ’72. The newlyweds met at Dartmouth College and live in Washington, D.C. There’s a lot to update in the life of Kathryn Henschen Jacques ’02, beginning with a new day job. In October 2013, Kathryn joined Antson Capital Partners, a startup private equity firm in Baltimore’s Harbor East. This new position has given Kathryn the flexibility to teach ballet in the evenings. She is now working with more than 75 girls ages 6-18 at three different dance schools.

One of her students is Maryvale freshman, Stephanie Brocato ’17. Life is a little hectic, but Kathryn is thrilled to be back in the ballet world.

Kathryn also performs with two new dance companies: a contemporary group in Cecil County called Eclipse Performing Dance Co. and another in College Park, Connect the Dots. She’ll be dancing the role of Aurora in “Sleeping Beauty” this spring, one of her favorite classical roles as well as a featured role with Eclipse. Last fall, Kathryn also started acting. She has appeared in two short films and a TV episode on the ID Network. She also recently did a photo shoot and is hoping to have some of the pictures licensed

by Getty Images this year. Kathryn and her husband, David Jacques, will celebrate their second wedding anniversary in June, hopefully with a new home in Lutherville. David recently finished grad school at Johns Hopkins and is working his way through the ranks with Lennar Home Builders. Kathryn looks forward to reading everyone’s updates in the Messenger!

Blakely Agnone Rollin ’02, former Maryvale Middle School Lacrosse coach, will lead the Junior Varsity Lacrosse Team this spring. She was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

Cara Fleck ’03, can be heard on the Inscape Chamber Orchestra’s debut album Sprung Rhythm, which was nominated for a 2014 GRAMMY in the category of Best Surround Sound Album. As Inscape’s principal harpist, Cara will be heard on

the group’s second recording, “American Aggregate,” due for release later this year. She is regularly engaged with other chamber ensembles and orchestras in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, and is also the assistant director of marketing and communications for the University of Maryland School of Music. Cara and her fiance, percussionist Eric Plewinski, will be married this year. The couple lives in Annapolis with one harp and at least 50 percussion instruments!

Lindsey Gillenwater Welsh ’03 is living in Zurich, Switzerland, with her husband, Jared.

Lindsey’s job with KPMG precipitated the move in July 2013. Lindsay and Jared already have visited more than 10 countries throughout Europe. Lindsey says it has been an amazing experience learning a different culture and meeting new friends.

She even joined a lacrosse team, one of only three in the whole country! The couple will be in Zurich for two years. Jared joined the men’s lacrosse team and has been keeping busy exploring the city and planning trips.

Emily Vitrano Waugh ’03 teaches in the Science Department at Maryvale and coaches Middle School soccer. Emily was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

The Class of 2004 has lots of good news to share! Shannon Manocheh ’04 married Kevin Tehan on Sept. 21, 2013. Shannon works at Mercy Medical Center as a study coordinator

for a research trial for breast cancer. Alex Vardoulakis ’04 is engaged to be married in October 2014. June is a big month for the weddings of Laura Mekulski ’04 and Olivia Garrish ’04. Lauren Fischer ’04 married Peter Wallace at Saint Ignatius Catholic Church on Dec. 7, 2013. A reception was held at the Engineer’s Club in Baltimore.

In addition to her position as secretary of the Maryvale Alumnae Association, Maeve McKew ’05 was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March. Maeve teaches and coaches at McDonogh School.

Ilsa van den Berg Marden ’05 worked for three years as a sports marketing and sales coordinator for Under Armour and is now entertainment coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Ilsa was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

Congratulations to Lauren Eberling Meyer ’05, who was married to Andrew Meyer on June 1, 2013 at Linganore Winecellars in Mt. Airy (See photo on page 22.) Lauren is teaching in Howard County and Andrew is in the United States Coast Guard stationed at Curtis Bay. The couple lives in Pasadena.

Bridget Sell ’06 lives in Hollywood, Calif. She works at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, where she is in the advanced study improvisation program. Bridget performs stand-up at the Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard whenever she gets the chance. Bridget says, “I miss Maryvale and the ’06 girls every day!”

Jordan Oliver ’09 graduated last spring from High Point University and is now working at Maryvale in both the Admissions and Communications departments. She also coaches Middle School field hockey in the fall.

Stephanie Schell ’09 graduated this past spring from Messiah College with a B.S. in Molecular Biology and is working toward her Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. During her undergrad years, Stephanie played as a four-year starting outfielder on Messiah’s softball team and helped lead them to become NCAA Regional Tournament Champions in 2013. She was named Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year in 2010, as well as Player of the Year in 2013. She was also selected to the prestigious Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 2013. Stephanie was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

Kelly Teaford ’09 had a big surprise waiting for her when she visited the mall last Christmas. Her boyfriend, Joshua Haslup, with the help of Santa, became her fiancé! The wedding is slated for 2015, so there is lots of time to plan. We spotted Kelly and Josh at the Maryvale Castle Wedding Open House in January collecting ideas. Josh and Kelly live in Brooklyn, N.Y., with their two kittens.

Kelly is striving to be an actress and Josh hopes to be a film director. They make frequent visits to Baltimore to visit their families, especially Maryvale’s own, Chair of the Science Department and Kelly’s mom, Dr. Karen O’Neil!

After graduating from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City in May 2013, Maura Holloran ’09, moved to Waterford, Conn., to begin working as the general management associate at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.

For nearly 50 years, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center has been a pioneer in the development of new work and new artists for American theatre. It is much snowier and colder in New England, but Maura loves the work and is very 22 / MARYVALE PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Maggie McElroy ’10 is expected to graduate this May from Cabrini College with a B.S. in Exercise Science and a Health Promotion concentration in Sports Science. McElroy is a co-captain of the Cabrini women’s basketball team and won the sportsmanship award in 2012. Last year, Maggie interned with the head strength and conditioning coach at Haverford College, where she worked with athletes, teaching them sport specific exercises. She is working as a wellness intern at White Horse Village in Newtown, Pa. Maggie was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

Ashley Helmrath ’11 was recognized as one of five finalists for the Jean Stephens Memorial Award at the University of Cincinnati. The award was instituted to recognize a Bearcats studentathlete for her high integrity, high ethical standards, respect for all persons and commitment to both Bearcats athletics as well as the University of Cincinnati. While she did not win, given the award and the size of the university, being one of five finalists says a lot about the young woman she has become.

Emma Taylor ’11 is studying abroad at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at

the University of Oxford in England, where she is taking classes in English Literature. She is loving it and will be quite sad to leave in May. Annie McCoach ‘12 is a sophomore at Stevenson University where she is pursuing a degree in Business Communication and a minor in History.

McCoach plays on the Stevenson University Women’s soccer team, participates as a member of the Marching Band, volunteers as vice president of Mission: I’m Home (a club that travels to New Orleans annually to help in the rebuilding efforts from Hurricane Katrina), serves as Junior Class Council President, and is now an assistant coach for Maryvale’s Outdoor Track and Field Team.

Now a sophomore at Towson University, Maggie Rampolla ’12 set a new school record in pole vault, leading the university’s women’s indoor track and field team to an outstanding finish at the John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh University.

Maggie won the pole vault event with a jump of 12' 6.00," shattering a school record of 11' 10.00" set in 2005. “She was one of the ones over break who came in and worked,” Towson Head Coach Roger Erricker said. “It was a great day and really a lot of fun to watch.” Maggie was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

A business administration major at Towson University with a concentration in marketing, Beth Kennedy ’12 went to England and Scotland during the winter of 2013 to study sports business. In March 2013, she founded the Towson University Women’s Ice Hockey Team. With a 7-4 record in the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHDC), the team did well in the regular season. They beat the University of Maryland and No. 1 seed Navy to advance to the final game of the championship weekend against Slippery Rock University. They defeated Slippery Rock, 11-3, to win the DVCHC Championship! They started as a first-year team in 2013-2014 and were able to accomplish something truly unbelievable by winning the championship their first season. As founder, president and captain of the team, Beth counts the experience as one of her greatest accomplishments. It really shows how hard work and dedication can lead to great success. By managing the team, Beth learned invaluable skills that will last a lifetime. She hopes these skills will translate into a career in the sports industry.

Ashleigh Stallings ’12 is a sophomore at Towson University where she is majoring in preadministrative business and runs on the track team. She has received the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Commissioners Academic Award each semester at Towson. Ashleigh competes in the Pentathlon in indoor track and Heptathlon in the outdoor season. The Heptathlon consists of seven different events held over a two-day span. She also throws discus in the outdoor season and has made the top 10 discus throws list at Towson University. Ashleigh was one of 12 panelists at a Maryvale sports forum in March.

London Metropolitan University student, Emily Taylor ’12, wrote two 100-word pieces of prose as part of a dissemination project she completed following her UK-India Education Research Initiative trip in August 2013. This opportunity is only available to UK students studying in British universities and is highly selective as it is a governmentfunded program. Emily is so fortunate to have been chosen for this incredible experience. She is working with IndoGenius, the company that runs the program alongside the UK-India Business Council, to try to coordinate with the US-India Business Council. Her written pieces will be published in the UKIERI anthology, by an Indian education NGO (non-governmental organization).

It will be available for purchase on Amazon to raise funds for an education NGO in India.

Sister Regina Finnegan, SND Beloved Maryvale teacher, Sister Regina Finnegan, SND, passed away on Aug. 29, 2013. Sister Regina taught math and science at Maryvale from 1953 to 1967. Several Maryvale students from that era chose a career in the medical field, crediting the academic rigor of Sister Regina’s classes as the basis for their decisions.

After leaving Maryvale, Sister Regina rose to become the president at Academy of Notre Dame de Namur in Villanova, Pa. She led the institution for more than 30 years, first as principal, creating one of the most respected Catholic girls’ schools in the area.
