A team event to fight cancer

Celebrate, remember, fight back By Joe P. Asher joe.asher@harlandaily.com

The annual Relay for Life event is scheduled for Friday, following the Cancer Survivors Dinner which was held on Monday. The Survivor’s Dinner included all survivors or current warriors and their guests. The dinner was coordinated by Rax restaurant, according to Kimberly Blanton, Harlan County Relay for Life committee member. The big event is on Friday at Huff Park. Blanton explained how the events will unfold. “It’s going to be from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m.,” Blanton said. “Relay for Life is an event where the community comes together to raise money to fight cancer. Harlan County has a goal of $50,000 this year. At the event we recognize the survivors and caregivers… we have music, games for the children, it’s a family-friendly event.” At 10 p.m., the Luminaria Ceremony takes place. “That (ceremony) is very touching,” Blanton said. In addition to the Luminaria Ceremony, the event will feature all sorts of entertainment, including live music from Brooklyn Collins, Laci Deaton and the Big Thunder Kissin’ Radio Band. There will also be an Elvis impersonator contest, guest speakers and games. “Anybody who wants to join us in kicking cancer’s butt, I encourage them to either get in touch with Liz Couch or any of the other committee members,” Blanton said. “You can form a team. A team can be one person or it can be 50 people. The more people we have fighting, the closer we’re going to be to a cure.” According to the American Cancer Society’s website at https://secure.acsevents.org, Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The events are coordinated and staffed by volunteers in thousands of communities across 27 countries.

Remember and honor: Dedicate a luminaria Relay For Life participants and donors remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease by dedicating luminaria bags. Luminaria bags are transformed and illuminated after dark at every local Relay For Life event. Each luminaria is personalized with a name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Luminaria can also be dedicated in support of a relay participant. Each luminaria candle represents a person. They are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers and so many others. All events offer a classic, white bag. Other luminaria dedication options may include a gold bag and a tribute torch. Once you begin the luminaria donation process, you will see the options available at your event. The Luminaria Ceremony occurs at every Relay For Life event. As the sun sets, luminaria lining the track light up the night. A hush falls over the crowd that had been overflowing with celebration. Relay For Life participants, survivors and caregivers then gather to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor those whose fight continues.

First annual ‘Bark for Life’ fundraiser is a success By Joe P. Asher joe.asher@harlandaily.com

Chris Jones | Daily Enterprise Joshua Lee, of Wallins, enjoyed a bite as his Dalmatian, Piper, waited patiently last Saturday during the Bark for Life event held at the Harlan Center. The event, a showcase for area dog owners, served as a precursor to the annual Relay for Life fundraiser by the American Cancer Society slated June 15 and 16 from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. at Harlan’s Huff Park.

The folks at Relay For Life launched a new event in Harlan County this year. Bark for Life took place on May 12. Kimberly Blanton, a Relay For Life volunteer, worked on the event. “Bark for Life was started in 2007,” Blanton said. “The lady that started it realized how important animals are in helping people with cancer.” Blanton explained pets help cancer patients through the companionship they give. “She just wanted to do something to raise money for Relay For Life,” Blanton said. “It started out with people and their dogs walking and raising money.” According to Blanton, the Bark for Life events are usually a huge success. “To participate, you pay a fee to register your dog,” Blanton explained. “You can register as many dogs as you want.” This year’s event included a number of activities for humans and canines alike. Concessions were available, and one team sold homemade dog treats. Blanton pointed out this is the first time Bark for Life has happened in Harlan County. Interest for the event ran high, making the Bark for Life a success, with all the proceeds going to Relay For Life. Blanton said she hopes to make Bark for Life a regular event and possibly team up with the Humane Society.

Fighting for a cure: Relay for Life began in mid-80s The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an annual event held in Harlan for the past several years at Huff Park, will take place on June 15-16 beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 2 a.m. The Relay For Life event began many years ago in Tacoma, Washington, as the city of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. According to the ACS’s website, in the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed — running marathons. In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event to raise more money to fight cancer. Months later he pulled to-

gether a small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team relay event on the track at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents dotting the infield. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event to give everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who battled cancer, remember loved ones and fight back against the disease. At the Harlan Relay For Life event, teams of people camp out at Huff Park and take turns walking or running around the walking track there. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, because cancer never sleeps. The Relay for Life event begins with a survivors lap, which is an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories they have achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay For Life participants are ensuring more lives

are saved each year. Caregivers are also recognized and celebrated at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love and support to friends, family, neighbors and coworkers who face cancer. At Relay For Life, people understand the frustrations and joys of being a caregiver, since the effects of cancer reach far beyond just the person diagnosed. As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease.

God saw you were getting tired, And a cure was not to be; So he put His arms around you, And whispered, “Diane Come with Me”. With tearful eyes we watched you suffer, And saw you fade away, Although we loved you dearly; We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands to rest; God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
