The Indian Independence and the Journey of Economy

Letter From the Editor

T

he Indian economy comprises of all the production activities and distribution activities that relate to people. It also comprises of economic activities related to people and hence determines their appropriate standard of living. However, very few people know that the end of the colonial rule left the nation in bits. We picked it up and placed it in order. This bad condition of the country was the outcome of policies of the British. Since every policy that they were framing was constantly focusing on favouring their nation, we had very little left towards the end. Therefore, in 1947, when the British gave us back India to us, we took back our torn nation. Our economy had been a victim of enormous exploitation. Our natural resources, iron ores, gold mines, wealth and manpower were subject to intense exploitation. Due to these atrocities, the Indian economy on the eve of independence showed poor/low economic growth. Immense efforts and knowledge were essential in order to move ahead. Although India was a very independent economy before the British rule, towards the end, it was exhausted. The Indian economy on the eve of independence was struggling to find the path. Since all the policies that the British were framing only promote their interests, we were diverging from prosperity. We were mere raw-material suppliers to the British. They made use of our labour without treating them well. The 200 years of British rule also took away our will to gain knowledge and awareness. Since we were their slaves, we never got the right to proper education. And as a result of these actions, towards the end of their reign, we were illiterate. Back then, before 1947, over 95% of the country’s income came from its agricultural activity and over 85% of the country’s population lived in villages where livelihood completely depended on agriculture. The Indian economy in 1947, with respect to agriculture was disheartening. The most important Indian sector was facing massive stagnation and continuous deterioration. Hence the result was low productivity levels and high vulnerability levels. Before the British period, India’s well-known industry was the

handicraft and textile industry. India was well-known for its industries in cotton and silk textiles as well. And in addition, Indians were excellent in metal and precious stonework as well. When the Britishers came, they were followers of de-industrialization in India. They did this by creating situations which were conducive to the decay of the handicraft and textile industry. They also did not make any effort to promote to permit the continuation of the metal and precious stone works that was followed by the decay of the Handicraft Industry and Slow Growth of the Modern Industry. Not only was the industrial and agricultural sectors of the country affected but so was the foreign trade. Indian economy on the eve of independence in relation to the foreign trade was very poor. Due to the rules imposed by the British, none of India’s products or skills had any recognition, adversely affecting the structure, composition and volume of the country’s foreign trade and income. Indian Economy has come a long way since 1947. With new policies under construction, formulated by new leaders of India, we wish that it only becomes better! nnn

BJP MPs/Ministers to Launch ‘150 Km Padyatra’

A

mong other important instructions, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has directed all the BJP MPs & Ministers to launch a unique 150 Km Padyatra in their respective constituencies to observe Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. As per the instruction, the unique Padyatra (Foot-march) that has been scheduled to start in the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2, will come to its ceremonial end on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. While talking to BJP MPs and Minister during a Parliamentary meeting on July 9, 2019, Modi said that Mahatma Gandhiji's teachings and ideology should be the primary 'focus' in the constituencies of their respective jurisdictions, especially in the remote rural areas, during the ‘Padyatra’. The party MPs and other leaders should also discuss Gandhian thoughts with the people, Modi asked the MPs. "The yatras will

focus on the revival of villages and making them self-reliant, plantation drive and zero budget farming”, said the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Pralhad Joshi. Sources said Modi also asked Rajya Sabha members of BJP to undertake similar 'padyatras'. They have been especially asked to focus with the 'foot-march' programms in constituencies where the BJP has organizational slackness.Modi also urged them to focus on the Sankalp Patra (election manifesto) of the party - that was released as party's electoral pledge ahead of the General Election 2019. “According to Modiji’s instruction altogether 150 groups should be formed in each constituency which will cover 150 kms and the party MPs will be part of these groups. The idea is to reach out to public and seek their feedback on the government's work and their expectations from us", said Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal.

India Needs to Focus on Increasing GDP

I

ndia needs to focus on increasing the GDP at the rate of 8 per cent and investment would be the key driver for this virtuous cycle as far as achieving the goal of 5 trillion dollars economy by 2024-25 is concerned, said the Chief Economic Advisor, K V Subramanian. Subramanian stressed the year 2019-20 has delivered a huge political mandate for the government, which augurs well for the prospects of high economic growth. He said investment is the only thing which can raise other things such as productivity, export, employment among other things. Speaking to the media after participating in the Economic Survey 2018-19, Subrahmaniam said, “If we look at the China economy when it was a developing country, they had more focused towards investment. In fact their investment grew to around 50 per cent of the GDP which is the

robust”. Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister NirmalaSitharaman presented the Economic Survey 2018-19 in both the House of Parliament. This was Dr Subramanian’s first ecnomic survey. “One of the biggest hurdles to achieve the 5 trillion dollars economy is poor enforcement of contracts and dispute resolution. Steps to speed up legal process should be top priority. The survey shows that required efficiency gains and appointments are large but achievable”, he added. He said that the current rate of investment was around 29.3 per cent of the GDP though it should be raised to 30 per cent of the GDP for the target of 5 trillion dollar economy. For raising investment, the CEA said, “Indian MSMEs need to be freed from the shackles that convert them into dwarfs. They should be seen as a source of innovation, growth and job creation”.

Tripura Govt Launches Pre-Primary Education

T

he state government of Tripura has on June 29, 2019 officially launched pre-primary education in a school at Kamalpur village under Dhalai district of northern Tripura. It was started through a simple programme, inaugurated by the Chairperson of Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat, Prashanta Sinha. District Education Officer (DEO), Rabendra Durai, Assistant Headmaster of the school Uttam Chakraborty, councilors, Goutam Biswas and Shukla Ghosh and the president of the school management committee, President, Pranab Chakraborty, were among dozens other dignitaries those attended the hours-long program. Prashanta Sinha, during his inaugural speech, said, "The state government is instigating new opportunities in the education sector. But the guardians should be careful about impending doom of addiction”. Recently, new means of addiction like brown sugar are taking the students community into the grip. Here the administration is also working. But the guardians should be careful and keen to keep

watch in their kids. "The state government is instigating innovative projects in education. Along with this school, 10 more schools are to be enabled with pre-primary education. There are some infrastructural problems in different schools. We are keen to remove it"”, highlighted the DEO, Rabendra Durai. It would be praiseworthy mentioning here that a pre-school, also known as nursery school, pre-primary school, play school or kindergarten. This is an educational establishment or learning space offering early childhood education to children before they begin compulsory education at primary school. Besides others, the main objective of the government behind launching pre-primary education is to prepare children physically, mentally, socially, morally and emotionally strong so that they could be escaped from poor performance or the early drop out. This apart, it would also help the older children, especially the girls, to attend their schools.

US Continues Putting Pressure on Iran International

U

nited States will continue to put economic pressure on Iran. It will also defend US interests as Tehran further stepped up to endanger the 2015 nuclear deal. "Iran should not confuse American restraint with a lack of American resolve," said US Vice President, Mike Pence during an annual summit of a pro-Israel Christian organization in Washington. "We hope for the best, but the United States of America and our military are prepared to protect our interests and prtect our personnel and our citizens in the region," Pence said. Pence's remarks came hours after Tehran announced that Iran has raised the concentration of its enriched uranium to 4.5 percent, crossing the limit of 3.67 percent set by the landmark nuclear pact. Pnce also vowed that his country would continue to bring pressure on Iran's economy, which he claimed had already been "reeling" under heavy US sanctions. Pence's tough stance was echoed by US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and National Security Adviser, John Bolton. Pompeo also noted that they had implemented the strongest pressure campaign in history against the Iranian regime. A year after the US unilateral exit from the nuclear deal, Iran withdrew from part of the nuclear deal on May 8 and threatened more actions in case its interests under the pact cannot be guaranteed. Earlier, Iran said that the Europeans had failed to take

"practical" steps to ensure Iran's economic interests under the deal. In July last week, Iran announced that its low-grade enriched uranium stockpile had exceeded 300 kg, its first breach of limits set in the accord. “It is believed that Iran's action to cross the nuclear deal limit would neither help preserve the plan nor secure economic benefits for the Iranian people”, said the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

HRW Seeks International Probe into Sudan Killings nnn

A

well-known Human Rights Watchdog (HRW) has asked the Sudanese authorities to organize and cooperate with an international investigation into the killing of protesters over the past one year in the country. In Press Release issued by the Human Rights Watchdog suggested that Sudanese leaders should facilitate the establishment and cooperate with the work of an effective international investigation into the killings of and abuses against protesters since December 2018. Meanwhile, Jehanne Henry, the organization's associate Africa director, emphasized that Sudanese authorities should ensure the probe's credibility by interacting with the UN Human Rights Council and African Commission on Human and People’s Rights. The much publicized protests that started in December 2018 in Sudan had culminated in a military coup by April 11, 2019. It occurred only when the then-President, Omar Bashir, was defeated and detained after almost 30 years in power. The Transitional Military Council (TMC) took over and pledged to organize a new presidential election within two years. The protesters have meanwhile remained in the streets demanding that the military yield power to a civilian authority. The situation further escalated in early June, when law enforcement officers violently dispersed a sit-in demonstration near the military headquarters in the capital city of Khartoum, killing dozens of civilians. It resulted in the suspension of talks between the TMC

and opposition. The African Union’s special envoy and mediator between the Sudanese sides, Mohamed El HacenLebatt, had on July 5, 2019 said that they had reached the agreement to set up a joint sovereignty council to govern the country for a transition period of three years. Although, both have decided to hold a transparent probe into the violent crackdown on opposition protesters that had occurred in June first week, they have also agreed to subsequently form a civilian government comprising technocrats. nnn

INR Acceptable in Duty Free Airports of Dubai

N

ow onwards, the Indian tourists will not have to convert the Indian currency (Rupee) into ‘Dirham’ (also called as Arab Emirates Dirham) while shopping at Dubai Airport, one of the duty free airports. The Indian currency is now acceptable at all three terminals of Dubai International Airport and at Al Maktoum Airport since July first week. In a question asked by the Gulf News, a Dubai duty free staff said that they had started accepting the Indian rupee (INR). Nearly 90 million passengers passed through Dubai airports last year. Of them, 12.2 million were Indians. Most of them came from the Indian cities of Mumbai, Delhi and Cochin. Till recently, the tourists to UAE had to convert the rupee into Dollar, Dirham or Euro before they could shop at Dubai’s duty free shops. The Indian tourists have however shown their happiness and said that this was a great move that would certainly benefit the tourists as well as the businessmen. With the latest move, the Indian rupee has become the 16th currency to be accepted for transaction at Dubai Duty-Free since its opening in December 1983. Being a duty-free, Dubai has grown into one of the biggest travel retail operators in the world. The year 2018, is being termed as a year for Dubai Duty Free, which celebrated its 35th anniversary on December 20, 2018 and

crossed the $2 billion mark on December 29. Noticeably, the Dubai Duty Free is currently operating about 38,000 sqm of retail space at Dubai International Airport and 4,000 sqm at Al Maktoum International. The operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing and it continues to grow day by day. Of the original 100 staff who joined in 1983, 25 are still in active service and referred to as “Pioneers”.

Restriction on Exports of High-tech Materials nnn

I

n another major decision of South Korean President, Moon Jae, the later has asked Japan to cancel its recent restrictions on exports of high-tech materials. These include the production of semiconductors and digital displays to South Korea. Noticeably, Japan had announced restrictions on exports of some high-tech materials to South Korea after the situation over Japanese reparations to Korean victims of forced labor deteriorated. Quoting a report by a news agency, Yonhap, at a government meeting, Moon said, “I called on the Japanese side to retract the measure and call for sincere consultations between the two countries”. Finding the maximum possible ways, the president also pledged to give expected support to the domestic manufacturers so that they could boost their global competitiveness in the industry and decrease their dependency on imports of core materials. The president said, “As I believe, the corporations will expand technology development and investment, and make more endeavors to break from the externally dependent industrial structure via win-win cooperation with component and material firms”. The ties between the two Asian countries have long been aggravated by the memory of Japan's colonial rule over Korea from 1910-1945. It is believed that Japanese companies forced prisoners of war as well as local residents into hard labor in the

Japanese military industry during the occupation and throughout World War II. Tokyo's announcement of export restrictions reportedly came in response to recent South Korean court rulings that had ordered Japanese companies to pay compensation to the victims of forced labor during Japan's colonization of the Korean Peninsula. Japan has expressed discontent with the rulings, arguing that matters regarding wartime reparations were already settled. nnn

India Shows Concern Over Trade Deficit with Indonesia

T

he Union Commerce and Industry Minister, PiyushGoyal, has raised concern over India’s trade deficit with Indonesia. He said that the balance of trade was almost in favor of the Southeast Asian nation, and both countries need to work towards establishment of sustainable trade by diversification in the export basket. The Minister held a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Minister of Trade EnggartiastoLukita in New Delhi. The duo talked on the sidelines of Troika Meeting with ASEAN Trade Ministers. Goyal raised concerns about India’s trade deficit with Indonesia, which stood at USD 10.57 billion in India’s trade deficit with Indonesia during 2018-19. According an official statement, the Commerce and Industry Minister said there is considerable potential for expanding trade in agricultural, automobiles, engineering products, IT, pharmaceuticals, bio-technology and healthcare sectors. Indonesia, with a bilateral trade of USD 21.13 billion in 2018-19, has emerged as the second largest trading partner of India in the ASEAN region after Singapore. Meanwhile, Goyal, emphasized on India’s concern over the import quota restrictions, as being faced by the Indian auto and auto component industries, in Indonesia on Completely Built up Units (CBU). Noticeably, the restricted import quota, as prescribed by Indonesia for Indian vehicles in CBU condition, has adversely impacted Indian exports. This apart the long-lead time taken for regulatory certification of new vehicles has also affected the launch of new products. Further other competitors have better market access advantage over Indian automakers due to bilateral FTA arrangements. The Indonesian Minister however, assured Goyal that he would address this gap. Goyal also requested the Indonesian authorities to allow Indian Origin Frozen Halal Buffalo Meet (FHBM) free and directly to importers/distributors of Indonesia through various important ports, without quotas and restrictions. nnn

Xiaomi Working on Periscope Lens Smartphone Camera : Report Technology

C

hinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is reportedly working on a new smartphone with a periscope lens. As per a report by a Chinese publication MyDrivers, citing the company's recent application with State Intellectual Property Office of China with the title 'Camera Components and Electronic Devices', it appeared to be working on a device with a periscope camera. This type of camera design has been used in the past to offer optical zoom capabilities without increasing the thickness of the camera and lens modules. It is not yet known in which of its upcoming smartphones will Xiaomi use this new technology. As it is a premium feature, one can expect it to be used by a high-end smartphone such as the Mi Mix 4. Recently various speculations have also hinted that an upcoming smartphone from the company might use a 64megapixel Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor. Of course, as is the case with all patents - it is uncertain whether Xiaomi is just developing this technology, or whether it will actually bring it to an upcoming smartphone. Flagship smartphones from Chinese brands, namely the Huawei P30 Pro₹ 71,990 and Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, have already used a periscope lens to enhance the photography experience. Both the Huawei P30 Pro and the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom have already been launched in India. While the Huawei P30 Pro was launched in India in April priced at Rs. 71,990 for its lone 8GB RAM/ 256GB storage variant, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom was launched in May priced at Rs. 39,990 for base 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant, and its 8GB RAM/ 256GB storage variant was priced at Rs. 49,990. nnn

WhatsApp is Coming up with some Exciting Updates : Sources

F

acebook-owned WhatsApp is the most popular messaging platform the world over. In a bid to make it easier for users to enjoy the service, the developers keep on launching new features that have quite beneficial values. After successfully introducing Touch ID/Face ID for iOS users and a shortcut for group voice or video calls with a single tap, the messaging service is currently testing two new features that users will highly appreciate. Hide Muted Status: There is a new functionality that’s being tested that allows users to hide the status of certain people in your contact list. When released, users will see a ‘Hide’ option above the Muted Status Update section. If you wish to revoke the unmute option, then you can easily do that by once again going to the ‘Hind’ option to restore the previous setting and will ‘Show’ the status. Frequently Forwarded: When WhatsApp rolls out this feature, you can see how many times a particular message has been forwarded. This particular bit of information will be available just for sent messages and not received messages. Users can view this by heading over to Message Info only for messages they sent. The report states that a message will be marked as ‘Frequently Forwarded’ only when it has been forwarded over four times. As of now, WhatsApp has limited the forwards to just five in India. Dark Mode: This preparation has been going on for quite a few months and this feature has been noticed in a few menus such as Chats list, Calls, Contact Profiles, Group Settings and Statuses. WhatsApp is also believed to be working on dark mode across the app as well as the sharing of statuses from Whatsapp to Facebook. nnn

Apple Working on Foldable iPad with 5G Connectivity

T

he year 2019 has been all about 5G phones and foldable display phones. We have already seen Samsung and Huawei launching their foldable display phones - the Samsung Galaxy fold and Huawei Mate X - at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 earlier this year. And now, it looks like another tech giant might be gearing to launch a device that combines both these trends into a single device. Apple is working on a new iPad model that will come with foldable display and feature 5G connectivity. As per the report, the new iPad with a foldable screen will come with a screen size is similar to the current Macbook product lineup, which means that the foldable display iPad when unfolded would open into an iPad that comes with either a 13-inch screen or a 15-inch screen. In addition to that the foldable display iPad would have Apple's latest A-series chipset in its core that the company could launch it as soon as next year. This means that the foldable display iPad is likely to come with either A13 or A14 chipset depending on when the company launches the device, should it decide to launch it in the first place. In terms of the design, it remains uncertain if Apple's foldable-display iPad would come a design that is closer to the foldable display phones offered by Samsung and Huawei or if it will come with a display on each of the folding screens that would also serve as the keyboard. Notably, reports circulating online suggest that Apple will launch a 5G enabled iPhone next year. However, there is no concrete evidence from the company so far. However, reports indicate that a 5G iPhone from Apple isn't expected until late 2020. These reports should be taken with a pinch of salt and we will have to wait until we hear an official word from Apple to know more about the device. nnn

Facebook could add 'Report' Button in the Message Context Menu of Messenger

F

acebook could be fiddling with the idea of adding a new 'Report' button into the message context menu in Messenger, to help users report individual entries in a conversation. Reverse engineering expert and app researcher, Jane Manchun Wong, revealed this new possible update on her Twitter account with a screenshot revealing the inclusion of a 'Report' button in a beta build of the app. Wong, however, does not find any clues to suggest that Facebook will be adding the button to Messenger anytime soon. While there hasn't been much to dive into just yet, the feature will certainly help Messenger users report individual messages from a conversation instead of having to report the entire conversation. The inclusion of a report button within the app should also ensure a more prompt action from Facebook's end since moderators won't have to work through the entire conversation to find out why the user was reported. The feature should also come handy while reporting a particular message within a group. Facebook, given their current state, will very likely take to their Newsroom to announce the inclusion of a Report button to Messenger, so we will keep you in the loop when the feature does roll-out to users. nnn

Since time immemorial, women have played vital roles in all-around development in the world. And, India is no more an exception. Right from vedic to the modern era, the unparalleled contributions of women, especially in the socio-economic development of the country cannot be underestimated. Going back to the historicalretrospect, the ancient sculptures, apart from religious or mythological texts depicting the multifaceted roles of Durga, Kali, Saraswati etc, are relevant examples to teach us about the multifaceted roles of women in Indian societies. However, versatile roles of women are still being witnessed in almost all corners of the country.

Roles of Women – Pre- & Post- Independence

D

istressed over the gruesome impacts of British Rule for centuries in India, large numbers of women, apart from their male counterparts or other male members of the societies, came forward to protests the ghastly attacks and the cruelties of Britishers on the Indian populations. However, the women gradually emerged as game changers from all front in the quest for independence.

Prior to the Revolt of 1857 In the eighteenth centuries, the women leaders made a significant mark of their valor and will and set the stage for emphasizing that women were in no way willing to be relegated to the backdrop of the freedom struggle. Maharani Velu Nachiyar (1730 – 1796) bravely fought with the British army decades before the 1857 Revolt. She probably remains the only queen to have defeated the British army successfully. Gauri Parvati Bai who was queen of Travancore carried out reforms and emphasized on the need for education of girls thus in many ways helping women elevate from social and educational stigma.

Revolt of 1857 The 1857 Revolt witnessed many stalwart women participants in the freedom struggle that have gone down as legends in the history of Indian Independence. Rani Lakshmi Bai, dressed up as man and fought alongside her battalion bravely against the British army. Begum Hazrat Mahal refused to be bogged down by the Doctrine of Lapse and reclaimed Awadh from the British as well as reinstated her young son as king. However after the fall of Lucknow she had to flee to Nepal. Rani Avantibai Lodhi of Ramgarh, Rani Tace Bai, Rani Jindan Kaur, Jhalkaribai and Uda Devi are other historical women who fought with the British army during the revolt. Besides their strength and courage at battles with the British armies, notable Indian women also paved way for social change. Savitri Bai Phule, the first female teacher in a first women school also opened a school for the untouchables and worked tireless for women rights. Helping her was Tarabai Shinde known for her published work Stri Purush Tulana considered as one of the first modern Indian feminist perspectives.

Women in Early Nineteenth Centuries

During this period, the freedom struggle came into full swing and women from across all castes and classes took the baton of being equally responsible and dedicated to the national cause. Where men of stature, such as, Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose and Chandrasekhar Azad emerged as leaders in their own right, women stalwarts too matched them step to step. In fact, undoubtedly women freedom fighters have made significant contributions to the independence movement and in many ways the coordinated synchronization, between the two, has been an important landmark in the gaining of Indian independence. Sarojini Naidu, often termed asthe ‘Nightingale of India’, was a prolific writer and poet, led from the front in the Civil Disobedience Movement and Salt Satyagraha. She was president of the Indian National Congress and was an outstanding leader for campaigning and leading group of women. Annie Beasant was elected the president of the Indian National Congress and launched the Home Rule Movement. A reformer, labor organizer and strike leader, Annie Besant was also actively involved in educational activities setting up schools and colleges. Bhikaji Cama, who exiled in Europe, was a social worker and a strong nationalist. She unfurled the flag of Indian Independence in Stuttgart Germany along with a powerful speech advocating the right to freedom. Kamala Nehru was in the forefront of the Non – Corporation Movement and organized women in picketing shops selling foreign liquor and cloth. However, when her husband Jawaharlal Nehru was arrested for delivering a speech deemed as ‘seditious’ by the British, she went in his place to deliver it. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit the first women to become the president of the United Nations General Assembly was arrested multiple times for her involvement in the Civil Disobedience Movement. Aruna Asaf Ali played a pivotal role in the Quit India Movement unfurling the flag in Bombay to signify the start of the movement. She edited ‘Inquilab’ a monthly journal of the Indian National Congress and was awarded the highest civilian Kasturba Gandhi worked with Mahatma Gandhi all through her life and was the leader of the Women’s Satyagraha. She was

Vijay Lakshmi Pandit involved closely with her husband in almost all his movements. Usha Mehta, right from her childhood participated in the ‘Simon Go Back’ movement. Her nationalist spirit and broadcasting for the Congress Radio during the Quit India Movement was really unparalleled. The list can go on, as one after another made her individual as well as collective efforts on the independence movement. Sucheta Kriplani founder of the All India Mahila Congress, Raj Kumari Gupta, who supplied the revolvers in the Kakori operation, Abadi Bano Begum, who motivated crowds in Lucknow from behind her burqa, Lakshmi Sehgal, who headed the Rani Jhansi regiment under Subhash Chandra Bose, Kamaladevi who actively participated in the Non-Corporation Movement, Salt Satyagraha as well as was an eminent theatre personality and promoted native handicrafts and arts, Kanaklata Barua who was shot while leading a procession bearing the Indian National Flag, Parbati Giri who worked dedicatedly for the welfare of orphans, Matangini Hazra who was shot thrice but continued to march with the National Congress Flag chanting Vande Mataram and many more were women of grit, dedication and honor. However, as bright stars shone in the freedom struggle, there were also many nameless women who have in their own way contributed to the movement. The Swadeshi movement perhaps involved the most women who picketed foreign products. When men were arrested the women stepped up and fulfilled and finished their unfinished work. The numerous women who laid down their life at the Jallianwala Bagh, the umpteen women who silently wiped a tear in pride when the men of their family sacrificed their lives- Women as messengers, as supporters, as wives and mothers and as leaders were an integral part of the independence movement. As a matter, our nation needs to remember that our freedom struggle would not quite be the same

Sucheta Kriplani without women. After the Independence, the role of women has evolved with the evolution of the society and a change of thought process. The result being that today it is no big deal if a woman is an engineer, a politician or an Army Major, which were all male-dominated professions at a point of time. Here is a list of women, who either broke erstwhile largely male bastions or created a history in the field of their respective choices. These are:

Vijay Lakshmi Pandit She was not only the first Indian but also the first woman president of the United Nations General Assembly in 1953. Besides, Pandit had served as envoy to the USSR before her appointment to this coveted post. Vijay Lakshmi was the younger sister of ex-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

I B Joshi The first woman IAS officer of independent India, Isha Basant Joshi was posted as Magistrate and then as Assistant Commissioner in Delhi, followed by her appointment as Commissioner-cum-State Editor of District Gazette. She retired in 1966. The sad part of her life is that at the ripe age of 96, the lady is spending her last days in the dingy servant quarter of her already sold out ancestral house.

Sucheta Kriplani First woman Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in independent India in 1963, Sucheta was a freedom fighter as also one of the few women who were elected to the Constituent Assembly and was part of the subcommittee that drafted the Constitution of free India.

As suchour plan to reach the US$ 5 trillion inthe next few years is no more a big dream. Ten major highlights are as follows: 1. Building physical and social infrastructure; II. Digital India reaching every sector of the economy; III. Pollutions free India with green Mother Earth and Blue Skies; IV. Significant Schemes For Middle Class

The Indian population being young, it is encouraging more and more entrepreneurs to emerge in India. The Budget has ad-

28

OBSERVER DAWN August 2019

dressed the challenges faced by startup ventures by relaxing or clarifying tax ambiguity surrounding this segment. The big focus on startups in the Budget should naturally encourage people, especially youngsters, to look at this as one of the opportunities to build their future as well as the future of India. The Budget thanked people who are genuine tax payers falling under the higher income bracket. However, this Budget did not hesitate to tax them more though they are already paying higher income tax. It appears to me that government has to achieve the right balance between incomes versus expenditure. The Finance Minister’s example of the elephant in a paddy field, drawn from the Tamil Sangam classic, Puranaooru, is really powerful to convey the meaning and the importance of paying tax. The Budget emphasized a number of measures to enable higher tax compliance. Few of the administrative announcements such as bringing HFCs under the RBI fold is a great move. It will bring higher supervision and support from RBI and therefore, timely availability of funds for this sector. As a consequence, even banking related pain-points in this sector may also be addressed.

The Budget spoke a lot about the need for corporate bond market development to ensure availability of funds to all types of borrowers. While this has been the subject under discussion for more than two decades, it appears from the speech that it will get addressed this time around. While the budget has given lots of emphasis on doubling our economy in the next five years, it has also kept the promise of fiscal discipline by keeping the fiscal deficit at 3.3%. This essentially means Government of India will increase focus on higher tax compliance, higher tax growth and different way of rising resources rather than funding growth through government borrowing. Overall, the Budget has covered different needs of the country well, right from the infra development to consumption. It has also addressed some of the recent concerns around financial markets and created a road map for investment in manufacturing in the country through Foreign Portfolio Investors.

Scheme for Farmers

Making some big-bang announcements for rural India, Sitharaman announced zero-budget farming. Under this scheme, the costs of raising the main crop are offset by the income that farmers earn from intercrops. As per this, chemical fertilizers and pesticides would be made through available cow dung and cow urine, jaggery and pulse flour. It's currently in practice in Andhra. Sitharaman also announced up-gradation and regeneration of traditional industries. She said cluster-based methods will be taken-up to make traditional industries more productive. A road construction is going on at a high pace and that 30,000 km of Gram SadakYojana roads have been built using clean technology, thereby reducing the carbon footprint. Over 1.25 lakh km of rural roads will be laid or upgraded in next 5 years at a cost of Rs 80,000 to Rs 1,50,000crore, the FM announced.

Schemes for Businessmen

In a move to cover up most of the Indian companies, the corporate tax rate of 25% has been extended to all firms with an annual turnover of up to Rs 400 crore.

The Finance Minister, during the budget session said, “So far as the corporate tax is concerned, we continue with phased reduction in rates. At present the lower rate of 25% is only applicable to the companies that have an annual turnover up to Rs 250 crore. I propose to include all companies having an annual turnover of Rs 400 crore”. This will cover 99.3% of all the companies. The tax proposals will stimulate growth, incentivize affordable housing and encourage start-ups by releasing entrepreneurial spirit. It will also be geared towards promoting digital economy. Recently, domestic corporations with an annual turnover of up to Rs 250 crore needed to pay 25% towards corporation tax and those with an annual turnover of over Rs 250 crore needed to pay 30% tax. Foreign corporations, on the other hand, need to pay a flat 40% corporate tax on their annual turnover. While, corporations with a net income of over Rs 10 crore need to pay a 12% surcharge, the foreign corporations, will have to pay a surcharge of 2% in case they earn a net income between Rs 1 crore and Rs 10 crore. If the net income crosses that mark, these corporations need to pay a surcharge of 5%. There are about eight lakh companies with a total sales figure of up to Rs 250 crore in India. There are only 7,000 companies across the country that registers an annual turnover of over Rs 250 crore. The Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) businessmen in the Gulf regions have also shown their concerned saying that the government should focus more on job creations. Government has hiked tax on petrol and diesel, raised import duty on gold, levied additional surcharge on super rich and brought a tax on high value cash withdrawals in order to seek gradual growth in the business and reduction in corporate tax, apart from rebates in housing sector, startups and electric vehicles etc. “The first budget of Prime Minister, NarendraModi’s second term in the office, has strongly covered almost all critical sectors. If everything goes well, it will surely boost India’s march towards becoming a $ 5 Trillion economy”, said, Yusuff Ali MA, the Chairman of UAE-based Lulu Group.“They often talk about the new India but the budget seems like old wine in a new bottle. There is no plan for employment generation, no new initiatives”

REACTIONS

Experts Views

The Finance Minister’s Budget speech re-iterates the government’s thrust on minimum government and maximum governance. Ramping up infrastructure investments to Rs. 20 lakh crores a year would help India move to the 8% growth trajectory. The proposed Expert Committee will have a critical role to play in channeling long term private capital to meet this need. Resource mobilization through further disinvestment and increase in tax rates, and encouraging banks to take risks in lending to NBFCs through partial guarantees to ease credit flow is likely to have a positive impact.

Shyamal Mukherjee, Chairman - PwC India

Government’s proposal to relax FDI norms for sectors such as media, aviation, insurance, and single-brand retail will attract more overseas investment and boost India as a preferred FDI destination. The government will examine suggestions of further opening up of FDI in aviation, media, AVGC (Animation, Visual effects, Gaming and Comics) and insurance sector in consultation with stakeholders.

ccording to a recent report issued by the World Bank, with the country pushing infrastructure investments ahead of the ‘World Expo 2020’ (also known as Dubai’s Expo 2020), the economic growth that was marked at 2.6% in 2019, is likely to reach up to 3.2% by 2021. It would be supported by the government’s economic stimulus plans, hosting Expo 2020 and improved growth prospects in trading partners. Most significantly, the figures from the World Bank are almost similar to the economic growth projections made by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in July 2019. For 2019, the IMF’s Regional Economic Outlook has projected 2.8% real GDP growth and 3.3 per cent for 2020 in the UAE. In GCC countries, GDP growth is expected to improve slightly to 2.1% in 2019. The report said the GCC countries have made steady progress in implementing major reforms to attract investors and boost competitiveness, such as easing business licenses, lowering fees, liberalizing foreign ownership, and supporting women and young entrepreneurs. But the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows have been under-performed with respect to the other emerging markets, the report says. Others include loosening foreign ownership of firms and reducing non-tariff barriers. In addition, the business environment reforms are already receiving high priority in many countries. SMEs are expected to be a $ 25.8 billion by 2020. Owing to MSME, India is expected to have the largest job-market ready youth population in the world by 2020, the sector is sure to support India in improving its financial inclusion and mitigating the rural-urban divide.

7. Make in India There has never been a better time for ‘Make in India’. Since the launch of this campaign in 2014 the obsolete and restrictive framework of the past have been abolished and replaced with a more transparent and user friendly system that focuses on driving growth and establishing a New India. It is intended to increase the share of manufacturing to 25% of GDP and Make in India is a critical initiative to achieve this objective. The primary objective of this initiative is to attract investments from across the globe and strengthen India’s manufacturing sector. It is being led by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The Make in India initiative is built on four pillars, namely: New Processes, New Infrastructure, New Sectors & New Mindset. The focus of Make in India programme is on 25 sectors. These include: automobiles, aviation, chemicals, IT & BPM, pharmaceuticals, construction, defence manufacturing, electrical machinery, food processing, textiles and garments, ports, leather, media and entertainment, wellness, mining, tourism and hospitality, railways, automobile components, renewable energy, biotechnology, space, thermal power, roads and highways and electronics systems. The government hopes to create 100 million new jobs by 2022, thereby giving a push to the Indian manufacturing sector and to provide them with a stronger role in domestic job creation. India is expected to become the world's fifth largest economy in 2019, reaching a total GDP size exceeding $3 trillion, and overtaking United Kingdom and by 2025, Indian GDP is expected to surpass Japan, which will make India the second-largest economy in the Asia-Pacific region.

8. Digital India India has chartered a unique path to digitisation and its impact is inclusive, empowering and transformative. It is emerging as a hub for ‘Digital Skills’. The Digital India initiative was established as a flagship program to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The

Campaign envisages a $ 20 billion investment covering mobile connectivity throughout the country, re-engineering of government process via technology and enabling e-delivery of citizen services. India has the 2nd largest internet subscriber base in the world with approximately 500 million users. This number is projected to increase to approximately 850 million users by 2025, which is more than the combined population of G7 countries. Digital India program has the potential to provide an incremental 20-30% increase in India’s GDP by 2025.

Conclusion It is a new dawn for India and currently the trend is set on IT sector, followed by infrastructure. However, the new surge in entrepreneurship, education and renewable energy will create a great impact on GDP in the next decade. The Indian e-commerce sector is also expected to go US$ 200 billion by 2026 from US$ 38.5 billion as of 2017. The e-commerce industry has been directly impacting the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) in India by providing means of technology, marketing and giving small businesses direct presence both domestically and globally along with a favorable cascading effect on other industries as well. The Indian e-commerce industry has been on an upward growth trajectory and is expected to surpass the US to become the second largest e-commerce market in the world by 2034. The Government initiative that has made the maximum impact on the Indian economy is ‘Make in India’. GDP contribution by each sector has improved significantly. The sectors have become more open for Foreign Direct Investment, with 100% FDI being permitted across key sectors . The initiatives and schemes have majorly relaxed government regulations and processes, leading to Improvement in Ease of Doing Business rankings. With its invigorated efforts towards an energy efficient future, India’s renewable sector is attracting a lot of innovation and financial support. The strong industrial base, rapid digitisation, young population, growing infrastructure, resilient startup ecosystem in confluence with determined Government reforms will take the Indian economy to $10 trillion and amongst the top three in the world. As India continues to sharpen its focus and achieve its targeted milestones across sectors, it is bound to become one of the most lucrative markets in the world. Attracting investment and business opportunities, it is already creating an impact on the world economy. India, today, stands at a precipice of infinite possibilities. We are hopeful that with continued impetus on growth from both the private and public sectors, India will continue to rise in its economic revolution.

Unravelling the Crisis of Democracy Worldwide Political

A

democracy turns to be illiberal when its citizens elect a leader democratically to function authoritatively for the furtherance of their not-so-liberal interest, mostly aimed at a target social or ethnic group existing in democracy much to the dislike of the majority stakeholders of the society. The symptoms of an illiberal democracy may be visible as authoritative or corrupt political leaders, a weak judiciary and corrupt political parties. But on the contrary, liberal democracies are those where group and individual liberties prevail and private individuals and civil society work within an autonomous sphere, with no hindrances. “The People v Democracy”, YaschaMounk of Harvard University has reiterated the thought; time and again that liberalism and democracy are separable. There is a visible trend that Voters favour electing a government that would restrict the rights of a measly minority. For example, Hungary, when communism collapsed in 1989, under successive governments, became fully democratic, and followed a liberal political course initially at a pace that was similar to other Western European nations. But it is uncanny how things can change. In recent times, the leader of the Fidesz party and Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, took up the decision of distancing his country from the liberal values that most EU nations share. He served his second consecutive term in office. In April 2010, he acquired power with an electoral victory which helped him to achieve two-thirds of a supermajority in the parliament; with the help of two handy enemies: the Muslim hordes and the liberal

50

OBSERVER DAWN August 2019

elite who wanted to let them in. Mr. Orban built a fence that largely stopped the flow of refugees. But still, he continued to play up the threat. Together with the smaller Christian Democratic People’s Party, which served as a minor coalition partner, Fidesz secured 263 of the 386 seats and 52.7% of the national vote in the parliament. Old checks were curtailed and the Constitution was rewritten by Orbánand since then and he balances these with no concern for the objections of the opposition. Orbán did many other things as well—he lowered the retirement age of judges to facilitate the entry of his own appointees; he staffed independent institutions with his party supporters and purged the bureaucracy of non-loyalists; together with voting rights, he boosted nationalism by granting citizenship to ethnic Hungarians in neighboring states; he nationalized private pensions; he attacked civil society organizations and often denounced them as foreign agents; and he also restricted media freedoms. He drove his government to raid NGOs that received funds from Norway in early 2014; he even accused one group known as Okotars that they were channeling money to the members of an opposition party. During the recent times, Orbán made his government turn against the refugees and a law was passed by him, which threatens to shut down a university of international reputation; this university was established by the Hungarian-American liberal philanthropist George Soros. A seemingly harmless inclination typically leads to the declination of democracy. It always starts with a crisis followed by voters backing a charismatic leader who promises to save them. Second, this leader finds potential threats and enemies. Third, he thwarts independent institutions that might cause hurdles in his way. Fi-

nally, he twists and bends the rules to make it harder for the voters to dislodge him. As the first three stages pan out, democracy manages to remain intact. But it begins to lose itself somewhere at the final stage. Carl Schmitt, a pro-nazi political theorist gave the concept of Enemy of the Political. He made a very important distinction. Those not on our side and disagreeing with us are enemies. And for the survival of the state- enmity had priority over friendship: In doing so, Schmitt reduced all politics to war. And the irretrievability of the enmity lets it grow into a rivalry. Now picking the right enemies and posing them as the ultimate threat to the majority stakeholders of the nation-state is crucial. They say that one should be careful while choosing friends and more so while picking enemies. And this can’t be more relevant than in the case of politics. Written in the Summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Huntington’s ‘The Clash Of Civilisations’ still continues to be a though proving a piece of writing. Its emphasis on civilizational fault lines and torn nations appear to be much more relevant than ever. Huntington argued that post-Cold War, political conflicts would largely have a cultural basis. And Islam due to its around the globe presence will rise up to be a common enemy of the west. The in-depth reading of the soul-stirring piece makes one realize how Islam and its followers have been made into the common and most convenient ‘enemy’. Then they transform into a demolishing squad of the independent institutions which are said to serve as the pillars of democracy but all in the garb of defending the identity of the voters, their essence, values, and religion. Their campaign starts out with a positive agenda;by forging a cardinal relation with their vote bank on the basis of their cultural affinities and common interests andby favoring group rights over individual liberties, a legacy of the left. The primary target being the Judiciary, case in point Poland and the Philippines, where the ruling party passed a law in December forcing two-fifths of judges into retirement and Mr. Duterte forced out the chief justice of the Philippines, who had raised a voice against his arbitrary use of martial law. The media

comes in next. The Despot, in desperate attempts to create a favorable field, puts its own favorable man in a position to control the broadcast. Information that doesn’t align with his or her version of that truth is accused of being a lie and the outlet of information which is not subservient to the chair is made to appear as a lie-monger. Quite unlike the autocrats of the past, they don’t ban the independent media. They burden them with taxes and fines in a way that the ownership of these agencies is transferred to the blue-eyed boys of the chair. So was done by Mr. Putin in Russia, and is now widely copied. In Turkey, the last big independent media group was sold to a friend of Mr. Erdogan. An influential person can emasculate every prominent institution with the help of courts, media and the armed forces. A textbook example of this is debarring the opposition, such as in the case of Turkey. Or altering the legislature (as in Venezuela, where the government staged a feint election on May 20th). The United States of America once witnessed an uprising by the ruled, in order to promote democracy. But by banking on the grievances of the majority against a common enemy namely the migrants (a very good choice as they don’t even have voting rights) it now has a president who unabashedly claims to admire Vladimir Putin and declares to have a “special bond” with Kim Jong Un. China, for instance, had grown out of the clutches of dictatorship after the death of Mao Zedong. But it seems to be falling in the same trap again by vesting all its power in Xi Jinping, whose term limits as president have been removed. There is a long list of countries following the trend. The global righting uprising for the satiation of the populace, which is made to feel it has been wronged is a phenomenon very few remain untouched by. Learning from history and from the mistakes of others is a trait of the intelligent. This attempt of mine is not directed at any person living or dead. It just is an objective record of what the eyes can see and the mind could gauge from around the world. Any resemblance to any person or event in our country is purely coincidental . nnn

How To Use Keywords to Optimize Your Company’s LinkedIn Page First things first: Identify and use keywords. You’re probably familiar with keyword optimization as it pertains to website development or content creation, but how can keywords make your LinkedIn Page more discoverable?

What Are Keywords? Keywords are the words and phrases users are searching for online. They’re what your audience members type into Google and other search engines in hopes of finding helpful results. They’re how normal people talk about things related to your business, so keep this in mind as you enter the discovery phase. Sometimes, what people are searching for is not what you call your products or services. To determine which keywords should be featured on your LinkedIn Page, think about your key offerings. Your industry, location, and specialties are all important keywords to make prevalent throughout your LinkedIn Page. There are a number of tools you can use for keyword research including Google Search Console/Keyword Planner, Moz Keyword Explorer and SEMRush.

Eating Dates Offers

Unprecedented Health Benefits

Sugary sweets may cause multiple discrepancies in your body, but if you are really fond of sweets, you may choose ‘Dates’ as your major supplements. The exciting effects of eating dates are often witnessed in our body and mind both. Studies and research revealed that eating three dates a day produces ultimate benefits to our body. The date palm fruits are grown in many countries, especially those located in and around the tropical regions. Besides dozen others, some of the significant benefits of dates are as follows: REGULAR USE OF DATES REDUCES RISK OF COLON CANCER

As we know that the dates are free from the harmful bacteria and hence, dates ensure movement of foods through the digestive system at a healthy rate. And hence, when the digestive

system works properly it reduces the risk of colon Cancer. In a study conducted by the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences found that dates increase the growth of good bacteria and inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells and hence those uses to consume dates on regular basis can reduce the risk of colon cancer.

DATES OFFER QUICK ENERGY

It contains natural sugars, glucose, fructose and sucrose that will give you a quick burst when you need it. And unlike energy bars or drinks, dates contain other healthy components like fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamins and antioxidants that will keep those levels up, and not send you quickly crashing down.

IMPROVES DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

If you want to keep things in your digestive system moving along nice and regularly, dates are just the thing to do that. In just a one cup serving or dates, you will get 12 grams of fiber. That’s 48 percent of your recommended daily intake! The right amounts and right kinds of fiber can benefit your digestive health by preventing constipation and promoting regular bowel movements. And dates are most definitely the right kind of fiber to do the job. In fact, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that people who consumed 7 dates per day for 21 days showed improvements in stool frequency and increase in bowel movements compared to when they did not eat dates.

MAKES YOU MORE SMARTER

Dates contain Vitamin B6 that has been shown to improve performance of brain by helping the body make serotonin and norepinephrine. Serotonin in turn regulates mood and norepi-

nephrine helps your body cope with stress. Conversely, research has shown that low level of Vitamin B6 is linked to depression. So, when your brain is clear from stress, and in a good mood, then it is sharp and ready to learn and retain information.

A BIG MEDICINE FOR HEMORRHOIDS

Hemorrhoids are veins in one’s anus and rectum that sometimes becomes inflamed and swollen. It occurs just because of constipation that leads to strain in the particular area at the far end of the digestive tract. This is a terrible and often very painful condition that fortunately can be treated and even reversed through a change in diet to reduce constipation. Many doctors recommend a diet high in fiber, and that includes dates to help things move along so that your hemorrhoids can heal.

IMPROVES CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM AND TREATS HEART PROBLEMS

Dates, one of the seemingly magical small fruits, contain potassium. The basic elements found in dates often lower LDL (bad cholesterol) that causes blockages in the arteries leading to stroke or even heart attack. A study of older women found that high potassium intake is associated with a lower risk of stroke and ischemic stroke and mortality. Hence, it is suggested to include dates in your daily routine foodor food supplements. nnn

OBSERVER DAWN August 2019

for Fashionistas

Monsoon brings along the much needed respite from the heat, but the season also throws a challenge at you when it comes to dressing up. One always wants to look stylish but to ruin your shoes and clothes in the wet weather is not an option. Don’t let the rains dampen your sense of style. Follow these 6 tips to look your best and be rain-ready.

Wear light clothes

Play with colours

Skincare

Go for dark colours as rain marks tend to show on light colours. It also works well to uplift one's mood and personality. You can also wear playsuits, as they are easy to go, breathable and convenient.

RAIN JACKETS

This is a key piece. They come in cute colors and patterns, and can make a cool statement. Our favorite is a long, water-repellent parka with a hood big enough to completely cover your head. It should have some weight to it, a flimsy anorak will not do. This way you can protect your outfit and your handbag underneath. Other great options include a trench coat or bomber jacket.

SKIRTS AND DRESSES

If it’s a light rain in the springtime, you can definitely wear your dresses and skirts. Just remember the rules above: choose dark colors and sturdier fabrics. Cotton sundresses are best saved for warm summer days. If you want to cover your legs, just pair with fastdrying leggings instead of tights. Skirt and dresses look equally cute with tall boots and ankle boots, so if you already have a pair of tall wellies, this is the time to rock them.

HOLD-EVERYTHING HANDBAGS With rain, comes gear. Even for the most minimalist among us, you’ll need a bag big enough to carry your daily essentials (see below). Great options include a water-repellant satchel, a roomy tote, or a sturdy backpack. One of the most important considerations when choosing a bag is how well it protects your belongings from the rain, especially your laptop and headphones.

CLIMATE

Change: Is It Real?

“Scientists attribute the global warming trend observed since the mid-20th century to the human expansion of the "greenhouse effect" — warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space.”

62

OBSERVER DAWN August 2019

T

he Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years, there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives. Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. Longlived gases that remain semi-permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are described as "forcing" climate change. Gases, such as water vapor, which respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature, are seen as "feedbacks." On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century, the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture, industry, and other human activities has increased concentrations of greenhouse gases. The consequences of changing the natural atmospheric greenhouse are difficult to predict, but certain effects seem likely: On average, Earth will become warmer. Some regions may welcome warmer temperatures, but others may not. Warmer conditions will probably lead to more evaporation and precipitation overall, but individual regions will vary, some becoming wetter and others dryer. A stronger greenhouse effect will warm the oceans and partially melt glaciers and other ice, increasing sea level. Ocean water also will expand if it warms, contributing further to sea level rise. Meanwhile, some crops and other plants may respond favorably to increased atmospheric CO2, growing more vigorously and using water more efficiently. At the same time, higher temperatures and shifting climate patterns may change the areas where crops grow best and affect the makeup of natural plant communities. Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal. The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent

probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia. Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate. The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century. Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response. Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and Tropical Mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming. The evidence for rapid climate change is compelling:

Global Temperature Rise The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere. Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010. Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months.

Warming Oceans The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) of ocean showing warming of more than 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969.

Shrinking Ice Sheets

SOURCE: NASA The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 286 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 127 billion tons of ice per year during the same time period. The rate of Antarctica ice mass loss has tripled in the last decade.

Glacial Retreat Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa.

Decreased Snow Cover Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier.

Sea Level Rise Global sea level rose about 8 inches in the last century. The rate in the last two decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century and is accelerating slightly every year.

Declining Arctic Sea Ice Both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades.

Extreme Events The number of record high-temperature events in the United States has been increasing, while the number of record low-temperature events has been decreasing, since 1950. The U.S. has also witnessed increasing numbers of intense rainfall events.

Ocean Acidification Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent. This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tons per year. Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment. From shifting weather patterns that threaten food production to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. Without drastic action today, adapting to these impacts in the future will be more difficult and costly.

T

he teasers of John Abraham starrer Batla House are out. In the two promos, we get a glimpse of the tense drama the Nikkhil Advani directorial promises. In the first teaser, we see a proper shootout take place in a confined room with John Abraham’s voiceover in the end saying, “ Uss din kya hua Batla House mein, kya hum galat the? Kya main galat tha? ” (Whatever happened in Batla House on that fateful day, were we in the wrong? Was I wrong?). As the first promo concludes, a few lines appear on the screen which reads, “In 2008, a few gunshots created many stories. Eleven years later, we give you the real story.” In another promo, news announcers are heard saying that the government is involved in some kind of mix-up to cover who was killed in the encounter and that in all probability, innocent students were murdered. The video comes to an end with John saying, “Hum nahi kehte ki wo

students nai the, magar kya wo bekasur the? ” (We are not claiming that they were not students, but were they really innocent?). The film will be based on the real Batla House encounter that took place almost a decade ago on September 19, 2008, which is officially known as Operation Batla House. The incident took place against the Indian Mujahideen terrorists in Batla House locality in Jamia Nagar, Delhi. As the tagline suggests 'The Story of India's Most Decorated/Controversial Cop', the case was about this one man who has had 70 encounters, a record 22 convictions from 30 cases and nine Gallantry Awards. The 'Parmanu' actor will be seen portraying the role of Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, who spearheaded the encounter. John is known for appearing in patriotic drams. 7 Upcoming Electric Cars EXPECTED TO LAUNCH IN INDIA IN 2019 The Indian car industry, for long, has been reeling under the lack of any long-range electric cars. Apart from a cost disadvantage, the existing crop of Indian Electric Vehicles suffers from low range, long charge times and lack of creature comforts. But as is the need of the hour, we bring you a list of upcoming electric cars that might sway you away from the gas guzzlers.

1. Hyundai Kona EV (Expected Price: Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh)

Hyundai Kona Electric will be the first long-range EV to go on sale in India. Globally, the Kona EV is available with a 39kWh and 64kWh battery packs that deliver a range of 300km and 480km, respectively. The power output from the smaller battery pack is 136PS/395Nm while the bigger one delivers 204PS/395Nm. India is likely to get the low range/power option. The Hyundai Kona offers option for fast charging which can juice the battery up to 80 per cent within an hour. The locally assembled SUV will come with features like a powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, 8-inch touch screen infotainment system, cruise control and Blue Link connected tech and an eight-speaker sound system.

2. MG eZS (Expected Price: Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh) MG plans to flood the Indian market with four SUVs and one of them, the eZS will be an EV. It’s expected to launch in December, 2019 and will rival the Hyundai Kona EV.

3.Nissan Leaf (Expected Price: Rs 30 lakh)

To be brought in as a CBU (completely built-up unit), the MG eZS will share its features with the ZS sold abroad. So expect iSmart connected tech such as remote engine start, remote AC control, over the air updates, geofencing and more. It can go 350km between charges and will take around 6.5 hours to fully charge through an AC charger. But a DC fast charger will take only half an hour to juice it up to 80 per cent.

Speculation around the Nissan Leaf has been rife for a couple of years, but now, it’s expected to make its India debut soon. The Leaf packs a 40kWh lithium ion battery pack which gives it a August 2019

4. Mahindra eKUV100 & XUV300 Electric Mahindra has been a frontrunner in the budding EV market in India. After bidding goodbye to the e2o Plus due to the upcoming stricter crash test norms, Mahindra will be bringing the elec-

tric versions of the KUV100 and the XUV300. The eKUV100 was revealed at Auto Expo 2018 and was supposed to launch in the same year. And even though that didn’t happen, it could make its market debut sometime in the next couple of months. The XUV300 electric that has a range of around 350-400km per charge should be here in 2020. Technical details about the two cars are scarce, but we do know that the eKUV100 will have a claimed range of 140km with fast charging capability in just one hour. The eKUV100 is likely to be priced at around Rs 10 lakh, whereas the XUV300 EV should be closer to Rs 15 lakh.

The two cars can also be charged up to 80 per cent in six hours, but takes only 1.5 hours through a fast charger. The Tigor EV’s current power output stands at 30kW(41PS) and 105Nm of torque, but it’s still undergoing fine tuning for improvements in the powertrain. Prices of the Tiago and Tigor EV are likely to be around Rs 8-9 lakh and Rs 10-12 lakh, respectively.
