Welcome

Build A Better You. Welcome to Build A Better You—Harford Community College’s Schedule of Classes for Community Education, Travel/Tours and Youth! I would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank you” to everyone who commented on the new printed schedule format and made helpful suggestions to make this publication even easier to read and to register for classes. I am and will always be, very interested in your thoughts and interests concerning Community Education. If there is a course you would like to see us offer or one that you would like to teach, I want to hear about it; if you have enjoyed an instructor or tour or class, I want to hear about it; and, of course, if your experience was not as expected, I want to hear about that as well. This course schedule format has been designed to help you find the classes you are interested in quickly and easily, and also to encourage you to find new interests that you would like to explore. Community Education courses include all enrichment, leisure, and recreation courses—including travel—to meet the needs of children, teens, adults, and seniors. A separate schedule, entitled Careers in Motion, has been designed to highlight all of our Workforce Development courses, certification programs, and Contract Training. If you would like to continue receiving the Community Education schedule or are interested in receiving the Workforce Development Schedule of Classes (Careers in Motion), please contact the Continuing Education and Training Department at Harford Community College by telephone, 443-412-2376; by e-mail, Zparker@harford.edu; or by visiting us on the web, www.harford.edu/cet.

1. E nrollment in noncredit courses is limited to individuals 16 and older, except for courses that specify they are open to those under 16. 2. Non-citizens must provide original documentation (most current resident card, work card, or visa) to register. Students must register in person at the Continuing Education Registration Office in Edgewood Hall. Please note: Non-citizens who have never taken a credit or noncredit class at HCC must go to the Credit Registration Office in the Student Center the first time they register. 3. The College prohibits the enrollment of individuals listed on the National or Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Sex Offender Registry or with the Harford County Child Advocacy Unit.

Current Mailing Address

Students are responsible for maintaining a current mailing address with the College. All address changes should be reported to the Continuing Education and Training Office. If a student owes a debt to the College and does not maintain a current mailing address, that debt will be sent to a collection agency without further notice to the student. In this event, the student will owe an additional collection fee.

Payment for all noncredit courses is due at the time of registration. Failure to pay will incur a debt to the College that must be paid whether or not you attend the class. To avoid receiving a bill, please call 443-412-2376 before the class begins in order to process a drop.

Residency Surcharge

Out-of-county residents (except senior adults, disabled retired students, and students receiving a Maryland National Guard member tuition waiver) pay a $5 surcharge per course for each noncredit course that charges tuition. If you were an out-of-county resident at the time of your last registration and have since moved in-county, you must complete a Student Statement of Domicile for Tuition Purposes form and provide two forms of identification in order to have the $5 surcharge waived when registering. You may obtain the form by calling 443-412-2376 or visiting the registration desk in Edgewood Hall. Appropriate forms of identification include a driver’s license, voter registration card, or utility bill showing name and Harford County address. All out-of-state residents pay a $10 surcharge per course for all noncredit courses that charge tuition. Course fees, where applicable, are the same for all students.

Harford Student ID

All students will be assigned a Harford student identification number. The H-ID begins with a capital H followed by eight randomly assigned digits. HCC will still need a Social Security number for certain mandated business functions; however, it will be used on a limited basis and kept in a secure environment. Because students will need to use the H-ID for College business transactions, students are required to know and remember their H-ID.

You may not register for a motorcycle safety training class online. For registration information, please call 443-412-2376 or 443-412-2241. Although helmets (DOT-certified), gloves, and eyewear are provided, for your best comfort and fit you should consider bringing these items with you, if you have them, for the range portion of the course. Classes will be held in the rain as long as conditions are safe; the decision will be made on site at the time. We break for hard rain, lightning, or other unsafe conditions.

Student Stand-by Process at Harford Community College If a class is closed because of maximum enrollment, students may choose to participate in the stand-by process. Sometimes a few pre-registered students do not show up for their course and their open spaces are available for stand-by students. To become a stand-by student, report to the class about 30 minutes prior to the scheduled course start time and put your name in for a drawing. If space is available, the stand-bys will be randomly selected. You must pay for and attend the class at that time.

Basic Rider Course We provide the motorcycle for the beginning rider with little or no riding experience. Includes classroom and riding instruction to begin to practice street riding. You must be able to ride a bicycle to participate in this course!

RENT

Phoenix Festival Theater Book, Music, and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson Directed by Laurie Starkey Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. This is theatre at its best—exuberant, passionate, and joyous.
