FALL 2013

CONNECTING WITH OUR ALUMNI & FRIENDS

Building for an Outstanding Future in Health Care Education

Dear Alumni and Friends,

From the

President

Autumn is best characterized by the vibrant colors that come from the changing colors of the foliage. Comparing this to our campus seems only fitting for us as this new season coincides with the spectacular change that is continuing to happen at Harford.

Construction for Darlington Hall, our new building for the nursing and allied health programs, is well underway. We are excited about the opportunities this new state-of-the-art facility will afford our students. I would like to take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude to Craig Ward and Terri Garland, David and Alena Schwaber, and Bryan and Katherine Kelly for strengthening their commitment to the College and our students by naming areas in the new building. Their gifts will go a long way in supporting technology, program, and equipment needs. I am also pleased to share that once again Harford has been named to the coveted list of Military Friendly Schools®. We are committed to providing top-notch programs and services to support the unique needs of our military students. This list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that do the most to embrace America’s military services members, veterans and their spouses to ensure their success on campus. We continue to foster and create partnerships that strengthen STEM programming for our students and area schools. This summer, more than 40 middle and high school teachers participated in the 3rd Annual STEM Teaching Academy. The Academy, which provides teachers with intense professional development training, aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards. The College has also entered into a new partnership with the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center that will allow defense laboratory personnel to work directly with our STEM division to provide support with course materials, student advising, and teaching for summer camps. I encourage everyone to visit our new website, www.harford.edu. The new site is designed to help our students and the community better navigate through the wealth of information available in this valuable resource. I hope you will stay connected to Harford and come along with us on this fantastic journey to strengthen and expand learning experiences for our students.

Sincerely, Dennis Golladay, Ph.D. President 2

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS DESIGN SHOW HOUSE ROOM

In May, students from the Interior Design program created a stunning nursery for the 2013 Baltimore Symphony Decorators’ Show House. The students, Caprice Brody, Roxana Carrera, Sarah Garcia, Alexa Hubicki, and Priscilla Tabeling, collaborated to create the contemporary and sophisticated design. Using geometric lines and shapes and complementary colors of pale orange and turquoise blue, with a palette of light and dark gray for the walls and ceiling, the students created an environment that was both cozy and visually stimulating. The show house was once a former home of Baltimore Colts legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas.

HCC Celebrates the Groundbreaking for Darlington Hall On August 27, the College hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Darlington Hall, the new academic building for Nursing and Allied Health Professions. The new 52,000 square foot, three-story, state-of-theart facility was designed with high-tech classrooms, laboratories, modeling and simulation labs, and informal study and social spaces. The building will be a central hub for students pursuing nursing and allied health degrees and certificates, and will also serve educational needs of the health care community through ongoing professional development coursework.

“A facility of this caliber ensures that the teaching and learning experiences for students will keep pace with the changes in health care and positively impact the future of quality health care for our region,” said Laura Cianelli Preston, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Professions. “We are so excited that, for the first time ever, academic and continuing education health care programming will be offered in one building and will enhance the sharing of resources.” The building is expected to be completed in time for the fall 2014 semester.

COLLEGE ADDS PLUMBING APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM To help the construction community build a qualified workforce, the College has partnered with the Associated Builders and Contractors – Baltimore Metro to offer a new Plumbing Apprenticeship program. The program lends support to a growing trend in local and state government that requires apprenticeship training on government construction projects in an effort to reduce unemployment rates. Training begins with an application and interview with local contractors for placement, followed by both classroom instruction and on-the-job training over a four-year period. Seven apprentices are currently enrolled and started the program in September. “Harford and Cecil counties are expected to see growth in construction, manufacturing, and industry over the next several years. We are working to ensure the College has the appropriate educational offerings to meet the needs of these sectors,” said Dr. Zoann Parker, associate vice president for continuing education and training. “We consider the addition of the Plumbing Apprenticeship program to be a tremendous asset to our local workforce.” ABC’s apprenticeship training programs are fully approved and accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), U.S. Department of Labor, Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council, and the Veterans Administration. All of the instructors are NCCER-certified and professionals in the trade. Completers of the program are qualified for Journey Plumber status, which is one step below Master Plumber. For more information or if you are a contractor interested in working with an apprentice, contact Victor Cyran at 443-412-2398.

“Supporting Others On My Team Helps Everyone.” Everyone” BRANDON WOLF’S COMMITMENT TO HELPING OTHERS LEADS TO THE PRESTIGIOUS INTERCOLLEGIATE TENNIS ASSOCIATION (ITA)/ARTHUR ASHE LEADERSHIP AND SPORTSMANSHIP NATIONAL AWARD “It’s not only what you say, how you feel, but it’s also what you do that tells a lot about a person. Sharing a simple smile can help brighten someone’s day and can even make a difference. Growing up, I was raised with the philosophy of helping others. I learned it from my mom. Help others and expect nothing in return.” Putting these thoughtful words into practice earned Brandon Wolf the national Junior/ Community College ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all collegiate divisions at the regional and national level who exhibit outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. In addition to his support and leadership on the court, Brandon has given his time to a variety of organizations including his church, Our Daily Bread (a local soup kitchen), and women’s shelters and nursing homes. “Community service is something that I started doing through my church when I was young, and it stuck. It’s not hard to put your time out for other people,” he said. “The award was really a surprise. I didn’t even know I had been nominated.” Brandon was honored by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on August 24 inside Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. Kids’ Day kicks off the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. “It was an honor to meet Arthur Ashe’s daughter, the other award winners, and top tennis players. I received my award from the former mayor of New York City, David Dinkins. The ceremony was surreal, and I was proud to be recognized.” Brandon is a sophomore studying mechanical engineering and plans to transfer and continue his studies after graduation.
