APG Federal Credit Union Arena

The brand new APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College is a state-of-the-art arena and plays home to three Fighting Owls athletic teams: men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. Construction and renovation on the Susquehanna Center started in June of 2011 and was completed before the 201213 basketball season. The original facility, which opened in 1968, has now doubled in size and currently provides increased opportunities for fitness in the Dixie Construction Fitness Center, as well as health & physical education classes. As the largest indoor arena in the area, it is also used for community and regional events, commencements, concerts, special events, student services, fundraising activities, meetings, conferences, and trade shows. For sporting events, the arena’s capacity is 2,500, and for events with floor seating, the number can increase to 3,200. The building has hosted the Harlem Globetrotters to a sell-out crowd as the building’s first main event, as well as the 2013 MD JUCO Basketball Tournaments, Craig Morgan, KC & the Sunshine Band, Travis Tritt, Andy Grammar and numerous Christian rock concerts to nearly sold-out crowds.

nikki MURPHY

lisa STILL

Head coach Nikki Murphy has led the Fighting Owls to the NJCAA National Tournament in three of the four seasons that she has been at Harford. Prior to Murphy’s stint, the Fighting Owls had only reached the NJCAA’s in 2008. In 2015, Murphy guided the Fighting Owls to the program’s first Region XX Championship with a 22-12 win over Nassau. Harford won 10 games, the second-most in school history, behind the 11-4 2002 team. Murphy helped the team earn another share of the conference title and mentored Karley Bush, the program’s all-time leading scorer with 112 goals and 128 points. In 2014, Murphy guided the Fighting Owls to their first above .500 record since 2008 with a 9-8 campaign. Harford tied for the MD JUCO Championship with a 3-3 record with all other conference teams. The Fighting Owls defeated CCBC Essex 20-16 in the Region XX Semifinals to advance to the NJCAA Tournament. The following day, Harford fell 17-16 in overtime to Anne Arundel in the title game. Last year, Murphy led a pair of NJCAA All-Americans in freshman Karley Bush and sophomore Bri Logana. In 2013, Murphy guided her squad to a 20-12 victory over Howard in the Region XX Semifinals to clinch the NJCAA bid. The Fighting Owls finished that campaign with an 8-8 mark, the third-most wins in program history. The head coach recruited and coached the program’s second 100-point scorer, NJCAA All-American Sara Lebrun, who tallied 104 points and 89 goals in her two-year campaign. In her first season, Murphy guided the Fighting Owls to a 7-9 record, which included a win over No. 3 Nassau, 18-17 in overtime. That victory was the program’s first win over an opponent ranked in the top three in the nation. Murphy played lacrosse and soccer at Stevenson University from 19992003, where she also captained both teams in 2003. She was awarded the MVP award in 1999 and 2000 at a soccer tournament and tied the school record for the most assists in one women’s lacrosse game. Murphy achieved the triple crown at Bel Air High School where she played varsity soccer, basketball and softball between 1996-1999, and captained all three in her senior year. She was awarded First-Team All-County for soccer, basketball and softball. In 1999, she was awarded First-Team All-State for soccer. She is a certified coach through Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) and used that certification to coach women’s soccer at Aberdeen High School in 2011. Murphy previously worked at T. Rowe Price Investment Company from 2003-2011, where she was a manager responsible for a team of 15 associates in a back office environment. Here she used her coaching skills to document team performance, promote career development and train associates.

It houses the APG Federal Credit Union Arena, the Athletic Offices, the Dixie Construction Fitness Center, an auxilary gym, a swimming pool, two standard classrooms and three multi-purpose classrooms used for fitness and dance classes. In 2011, construction on the Susquehanna Center began, transforming the old home of Harford Athletics into a state-of-the-art building for athletics, physical education, community events and more. The crown jewel of the new Susquehanna Center, the brand-new APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College. It is home to three of HCC’s Fighting Owls athletic teams: men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. The Harford Sports Complex, formerly known as Thomas Run Park, is located on Harford’s campus and serves as the home for all of Harford’s outdoor athletic teams as well as a community leagues. The Complex includes Harford Stadium, home of the Fighting Owls’ lacrosse and soccer teams, the Varsity Baseball Field, home of the Fighting Owls’ baseball team, the Varsity Softball Field, home of the Fighting Owls’ softball team and the brand-new Cross Country Course. Within the confines are two other recreation fields for community baseball and softball leagues, three grass practice fields and the HSC Building, which houses offices and a training room. The new Harford Tennis Facility has a ‘blue’ look to it. The brand-new area, which shifted to the back of the Susquehanna Center features eight blue courts with a unique design with a center walkway between the courts for optimal viewing and coaching. A new entrance way was created for easier access to the facilities and a new look to remain in conjunction with our Fighting Owl branding.

Harford Fighting Owls Athletics Academic Services The Athletics Department at Harford Community College prides itself on the academics of its studentathletes. The Fighting Owls set records and lead the conference and region in academic honors year after year. For the seventh consecutive year, Harford led all 16 schools in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference with a record 25 student-athletes named to the MD JUCO All-Academic Team. And five out of the last six years, the Fighting Owls have boasted the most student-athletes on the All-Region XX Academic Team, topping all 27 teams in the region this season with 16 award winners. Harford is celebrating particular success since Athletic Director Ken Krsolovic started the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during the Fall of 2009. The semester honor roll has seen 761 student-athletes earn recognition in the past 12 semesters, including a school-record 80 in the Fall of 2012. During the 2014-15 school year, 138 total studentathletes were honored, the second-most for an entire year. The Department has a full-time Manager for Athletic Compliance and Student-Athlete Success on hand to help work with student-athletes and coaches on their academic progress in order to maintain good academic standing for our student-athletes, helping them to graduate as well as stay eligible for competition. Harford distributes weekly attendance reports to the coaching staff, who in turn distribute the forms

to their athletes. The athletes are responsible for having their professors sign the form at every class meeting, and the Manager for Athletic Compliance and StudentAthlete Success uses the sheets to track an athlete’s attendance in each course. Monthly electronic progress reports are also Women’s Soccer’s Christina Verzi distributed to all faculty (2013) had a perfect 4.0 GPA. members, ensuring that the administration, coaching staff, and student-athletes are aware of their academic progress. This also helps to catch those studentathletes who may be struggling in their courses and enables the Manager for Athletic Compliance and Student-Athlete Success to create an academic success plan. Individualized tutoring is available for all student-athletes and can be arranged by contacting the Academic Services Coordinator. Any students who are enrolled in transitional courses are required to complete mandatory minutes in the Academic Skills Center each week.
