Welcome to 2025! Now that we’re all back in action, trust we’re eager to hit the ground running. The strength of our organization has always been –and will always be – the extraordinary spirit of our people. And that strength is magnif ied when we come together with a shared focus on service.
We all recognize that the environment around us is challenging, and that real progress doesn’t come easy. But what I hope we also recognize is that we have the power to make progress easier through the choices we make every day, the respect we show one another, and the trust we build with every customer—whether they walk through our doors, or we go to them. These pillars have always def ined us as a family and as Good People to Deal With, and they will continue to do so.
The holiday season is our busiest time of year, and with 2024 now behind us, we turn our focus to 2025 and beyond. As we set the stage for the future, I’m excited to introduce you to your new leadership team and share some of the exciting initiatives we have in store for you and our customers. Stay tuned for details on our H&L Group Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
In the meantime, I want to hear from you! What are your priorities for the year ahead? What ideas do you have to make H&L even better? Share your thoughts and suggestions for the town hall by emailing me at mr@hardwareandlumber.com or sending a WhatsApp message to 876-881-9703.
Let’s make 2025 our best year yet—setting new standards in customer service and strengthening the H&L Family like never before.
The change starts with us. Let’s get to work.
With Manners & Respect,
H&L KICKS OFF
Major Partnership with Local Football Club
Our Spanish Town Road headquarters just got some exciting new neighbors! Hardware & Lumber Limited has joined forces with Duhaney Park Football Club in a landmark $9 million sponsorship deal that puts us at the heart of community sports development.
This isn't just another corporate sponsorship – it's a celebration of our deep roots in the Duhaney Park community. Being right next door to the club's grounds means we'll be cheering them on from the sidelines as they work toward their goal of returning to the Premier League.
"This partnership feels like a natural fit," says our Managing Director Marcus Richards. "Between our support for the community health center, our work with the Community Development Committee, and now this football partnership, we're strengthening our bonds with our neighbors in meaningful ways."
The club's Director, Clareton Walker, shares our enthusiasm: "Having H&L as our of f icial sponsor gives us the boost we need to take our program to the next level, especially in developing young talent."
Stay tuned for updates as we support our new sporting partners and help nurture the next generation of Jamaican football stars right in our own backyard!
LOYALTY APPRECIATION SUCCESS:
WE GAVE BACK
BIG TIME!
What a day! Our Loyalty Appreciation Day on December 11 was exciting as customers jumped at the chance to earn H&L Cash Back. Talk about spreading holiday cheer – we saw smiles all around as shoppers discovered they could earn 1% back on their big purchases.
The star of the show? Our H&L APP! It was like watching a digital party unfold as customer after customer downloaded the app to secure their rewards.
"Download now, save later!" became our unof ficial motto of the day, as we helped customers unlock the power of H&L Cash Back. The deal was simple but sweet: spend $5,000, get 1% back to spend until January 31, 2025. Who doesn't love free money to spend on their next project?
A huge shoutout to our amazing store teams! You rocked it with your energy, turning what could have been just another Wednesday into a celebration of customer loyalty.
Keep that momentum going! Let's continue sharing the word about our H&L Loyalty program and app. Building customer relationships is what we do best!
HONORING
WAYNE AND MILLICENT PART OF OUR H&L STORY
Last year, our H&L family came together to honor the memory of two extraordinary colleagues who deeply touched our lives.
Wayne Guthrie's remarkable 26-year journey with us began in 1998. He was a source of inspiration, wisdom, and friendship, offering calm guidance and unwavering dedication that helped shape the supportive culture we cherish today. We will always treasure the countless moments shared with Wayne.
Millicent Michael, though with us for a shorter time, brought a radiant light to our of f ices from the moment she joined in 2023. Her infectious smile, words of encouragement, and genuine warmth brightened every day for those fortunate enough to know her. Millicent's impact on our community was profound and will not be forgotten.
Saying goodbye to these members of our H&L family has been dif f icult. Each brought unique strengths to our team, enriching our workplace with their presence and contributions. Their families remain in our thoughts and hearts, enveloped in the ongoing support and love of their H&L family.
As we came together to remember Wayne and Millicent, we shared stories that brought laughter and tears, stories that reminded us how lucky we were to have known them and worked alongside them. Their spirit of kindness and dedication will forever inspire us.
LET’S GROW
It may be easy to remain in the same state or ‘place’ for extended periods; it is familiar, it is manageable, it has become routine. But is it really easy, or is it better described as lazy? Hold on, we get it, no one wants to think of himself or herself as lazy, but – why remain in the same state and place when we can grow and soar? Growth is not reserved for a select few, we all have the capacity and the wherewithal to point our path upward and grow! Humans have an innate desire to progress and enhance themselves – if we are not actively engaged in that, we might want to start today, to do more – to be more. Growth is not always easy, but for sure, growth is rewarding. Let’s commit to our personal growth today.
START NOW
It is said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; well, let us take a step or two today! Yesterday is already history, and there is no feasible reason to start tomorrow what can be done today. So the project that has been an idea in your mind for some time now, the course of study you want to undertake, the business venture that you have wondered about, the partnership that you doubt can work, the hobby that you have not taken the time to develop – start now, do it, it is a part of your growth and will prove pivotal in concretizing your wellbeing, self-actualization and success. Do not procrastinate. Set your goals, manage your time wisely, take a leap of faith and take that step now – you can, you must!
YOU MAY FAIL!
On the journey of self-improvement, sometimes some plans will not work, some goals may not be met, some targets may not materialize. Failure is not f inal. You can tweak and adjust, regroup and reset, change and go again! Seek help if necessary to correct mistakes so that future outcomes will be as desired. What is gone has passed – but you are still here! Go easy on yourself, don’t beat on you, be kind to yourself and understand that there may be setbacks. Learn from them, because you will have to keep going.
YOU WILL WIN!
Be selfless – treat people with kindness and love; boundless intangible benefits to be derived here. Be consistent, be resilient. Enjoy the journey. It is important that our focus is not solely on the end target, but on the journey itself. Sometimes the destination will change, but it will still require a journey – this journey takes a substantial part of our lives, we would not want to miss the victories and joy.
IN WHAT WAYS CAN I GROW?
• Self-Improvement - We can work on improving aspects of our character, mindset or emotional intelligence. This may include enhancing our selfawareness, communicating more effectively, learning to love ourselves better and building self-confidence.
• Acquiring new knowledge and skills is always a great way to improve self. Whether through formal education, expansive reading, online courses, workshops or informal education, learning will improve our ability to competently serve, our marketability as well as our earning potential.
• Being intentional about caring for our health and wellbeing also leads to our growth. Do not neglect your mental health either. Be mindful to manage how you cope with stress. Visit your doctors, discuss and take charge of your health. We do not have control over the length of our years, but there are deliberate steps we can take to assure healthier living. Take these steps!
• Financial management - keeping within your budget and making wise investments will prove helpful if your quest is f inancial stability. Get involved! Pursue your passions, volunteer in your areas of interest. This can lead to personal fulf ilment and increased opportunities in many ways.
Of course, we cannot just wish growth into being. Growth is going to take some work. We did say ‘take the step’, but exactly how is this to be done? There are some helpful techniques for self-improvement.
• Prioritize caring for yourself.
• Set clear, attainable and measurable goals. Record them, assign a timeline – now go for it!
• Develop an unwavering mindset committed to growth. Believe in your abilities. Stay focused.
• Learn, then keep learning.
• Practice optimism, positive affirmations; wash, rinse, repeat!
• Network well/surround yourself with persons that can influence your growth.
• Receive feedback positively.
• Do not be afraid. There will be (calculated) risks, take them!
• Start volunteering, practice being grateful. The benef its are intangible, but real.
• Seek support and accountability – share your goals and plans with a mentor or other personnel that can guide and keep you on track.
• Change if you need to – sometimes you will need to change course, be willing to adjust and adapt.
Life is for living, make sure you are living it well and grow!
MEETING OUR CUSTOMERS IN THE FIELD
H&L AGRO AT MINARD LIVESTOCKSHOW
One of our hallmarks at H&L Agro is meeting our customers where they are, which is why our participation in the 2024 Minard Livestock Show and Beef Festival was a natural f it. The event provided an excellent opportunity to connect directly with farmers and livestock producers in their environment.
"These agricultural shows are more than just exhibitions – they're vital learning exchanges," explains Richard Grant, Senior Agronomist at H&L Agro. "When interacting with farmers on their turf, we gain invaluable insights into their daily challenges and successes. This helps us better tailor our products and advice to their needs."
Our team set up an engaging display showcasing our comprehensive range of agricultural supplies, animal feed, and farming equipment. More importantly, it gave us valuable face-time with existing customers and potential new partners in the agricultural sector.
These agricultural shows are crucial to our business for several reasons. They allow us to demonstrate our products in a relevant setting, gather immediate feedback from users, and stay attuned to the evolving needs of the farming community. Being present at events like the Minard Livestock Show reinforces our commitment to being more than just a supplier – we're an active participant in Jamaica's agricultural development.
The conversations at our booth, from discussing feed formulations to addressing specif ic farming challenges, remind us why these personal interactions are irreplaceable. It's not just about selling products; it's about building lasting relationships with the people who feed our nation.

MEET RICHARD KILDARE: DRIVING HARDWARE & LUMBER WHOLESALE FORWARD

This is a man who leads with passion, vision, and a genuine desire to build something extraordinary at Hardware & Lumber Wholesale. With a background that spans construction and finance, Richard brings a unique perspective to the role, blending practical know-how with sharp business acumen.
MORE THAN A MANAGER
Richard isn't all business. When he's not strategizing, you might f ind him hiking a mountain trail, engrossed in a chess match, tinkering with a new invention in his workshop, or even penning a poem. "I need those moments of quiet," he shares, "time to reflect, to connect with loved ones, and to recharge."
He's guided by the wisdom of his grandfather and inspired by Rudyard Kipling's timeless poem "If," believing that true leadership comes from connecting with people from all walks of life. "It's about respecting everyone you meet," Richard explains, "whether they're a customer or a colleague."
A Vision for the Future
Richard's vision for H&L Hardware & Lumber Wholesale is ambitious: he wants to make it the premier destination for developers, project managers, and contractors not just in Jamaica, but across the Caribbean and Latin America. He plans to achieve this through:
Expansion: Establishing H&L Hardware & Lumber Wholesale as a major player in the region.
Consultative Services: Providing expert advice and support to customers.
Competitive Pricing: Offering the best deals in the market.
Innovation: Creating a commodity brokerage house to secure better pricing and streamline transactions.
Team Building: Developing a team of highly skilled professionals dedicated to providing exceptional service.
LEADING THE CHARGE
Richard is a f irm believer in the power of teamwork. "We can achieve so much more together," he emphasizes. Inspired by Michael Jordan's famous quote, he knows that "talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." To foster collaboration, he plans to create cross-functional teams focused on operations, business development, and strategic planning.
This is just the beginning for Richard Kildare and H&L Wholesale. With his dynamic leadership and commitment to excellence, the future looks bright.
Favourite Book: Julius Caesar (He loves the strategic mind of Caesar!)
Dream Destination: Africa
(He's fascinated by the diverse cultures and landscapes.)
Hidden Talents: Writing poems, crafting compelling stories, and engaging in lively debates.
Morning Routine: Starts his day with prayer and reflection, reading the Torah and the Bible.
A NEW CHAPTER IN COMMUNITY CARE BIG UP
H&L's commitment to community service runs deep in our DNA. From providing crucial farm aid during agricultural crises to supporting healthcare initiatives like the Ministry of Health's Adopt-a-Clinic programme, we've always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our communities. Now, these impactful initiatives f ind a new home under the H&L Foundation, a registered charity dedicated to strengthening these connections and expanding our reach. At its helm is Olive Downer Walsh, whose journey from Market Development Of f icer at Agro Grace to Deputy CEO, H&L Group & General Manager, H&L Agro has given her unique insights into our communities' needs.
What inspired your commitment to community service?
Olive: My roots in Trelawny shaped everything. Watching my parents – my father in the f ields and my mother running our shop – I learned f irsthand about community care. They didn't just talk about helping others; they lived it every day.
How will the H&L Foundation enhance the company's community impact?
Olive: We're taking a more focused approach now. Instead of spreading ourselves thin, we're targeting specif ic projects where we can make a real difference. Our recent partnership with The True Value Foundation to support local schools is a perfect example of this strategy in action.
Which Foundation initiatives are closest to your heart?
Olive: Health and education, without question. I've seen how these fundamentals can transform lives. When people have access to good healthcare and quality education, entire communities thrive.
What would you say to H&L employees considering getting involved
Olive: want everyone at H&L to know that their contribution is invaluable. Just like a garden thrives because of every single plant, our community flourishes because of the unique strengths each person brings. We're a family here at H&L, and together, we can achieve incredible things. Let's continue to foster that spirit of togetherness and extend it to our wider community.
The Foundation's motto is "Do Good and Good Will Follow You." What does this mean to you?
Olive: It's more than just words – it's our compass. When we genuinely invest in others, we create ripples of positive change that often return to us in unexpected ways. This belief in the power of collective goodwill drives everything we do at the Foundation.
