Jenifry Star is a very loveable, very naughty young pixie who decides to go to human school to make some friends. Everyone knows grown-up humans are terrifying; they hunt pixies, they stomp on their houses and even pickle pixies in jars. But surely human children are perfectly safe? Jenifry is willing to find out! With her infectious sense of humour, knack for mischief and irrepressible charm, Jenifry must figure out the surprising rules of schooland human friendship while keeping her pixie side hidden.

SOR

Readers will delight in following Jenifry's adventures in their very real world - what could be funnier to a pixie than a fire drill? Even for a pixie, I’m pretty short. I can feel excitement crackling out of his black fur. His pointy ears are twitching, and so are mine, as we watch the small humans. 2

One of them is pushing the other on a swing. It’s going really high. So high the seat lurches at the top and the girl’s bottom bumps off it for a second. She laughs and calls, ‘Higher! More!’ This playground is up a steep hill, nestled beside the Pixie Woods. Humans don’t come here very often. When they do, Nana usually makes me stay away. But I’m not a baby pixie any more, and Nana’s been busy because it’s sweetmoss season. She hasn’t noticed that for thirteen days in a row, I’ve been sneaking over to watch these humans. I want to play with them. I want it so 3

the sparkles rush out of my skin. They zoom in circles around the fern fronds, then shoot down into the soil. The leaves waver gently, then uncurl and lengthen, stretching upwards. Kipsy and I back away until we’re hidden behind a clump of trees. Then I cast my glamour spell.

P! M O SHZO

Glamour magic shoots out of my ears and spirals around me in a shimmering green cloud. My tummy flips over and my whole body starts to tingle. And then I start to grow. My skin changes from 6

‘Jenifry Star!’ shouts Aunt Demelza, ‘give me that snuffler!’ She strides across the kitchen, grabs both my shoulders and kisses the tip of my nose. The rest of the aunts line up to kiss my nose hello too.

24

I’m scared Nana will tell the aunts what I did and they’ll all shout at me. But Nana doesn’t mention a thing. I realise that if the aunts found out what I did, Nana would be in just as much trouble as me.

Fortnite is the 100-player Battle Royale game on PS4, XB1, PC , Mac and IOS. 45 million players, and rising, have signed up as of May 2018. 3.4 million concurrent players in early Feb 2018, smashing the previous record. Fortnite has over 65 million views on YouTube, with 1.7 million subscribers. The game has 3.8 million followers on Twitter.

GETTING STARTED

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR NOOBS The great thing about Fortnite is that you can pick it up and play right away! This book will show you how to master the methods that will help you to win a Victory Royale, but here’s how to jump straight into the action!

PREPARING FOR BATTLE ...

1

CHOOSE YOUR MODE On the Lobby screen you can decide which game mode you’re going to play. There are different styles of match but your first decision is whether to play alone, as one half of a duo or as part of a larger squad of up to 50 other players!

2

VOLUME CONTROL Whether you’re playing alone or in a team, headphones will greatly improve your gameplay. You’ll be able to communicate with your squad, sense enemies approaching and hear the sound of hidden golden loot chests.

3

BIRD’S-EYE VIEW After a short spell on ‘Spawn Island’ (during which time you can familiarise yourself with the controls) you’ll find yourself aboard the Battle Bus. From here you can see the whole of the main island, so decide where you want to land and wait for the perfect time to free-fall into the action!

REGISTER AN ACCOUNT To be able to play Fortnite, you need to have an Epic Games account. Registering is a quick process, needing only your name, a display name (avoid using your real name – go with something cool), your email address and a password. After you’ve created an account, you can log-in. You MUST agree to the End User License Agreement, so get a parent or guardian’s permission.

12 FORT_EssentialGuide_INS_FULL.indd 12

GETTING STARTED

4

HARVEST AND BUILD When you touch down on the map you’ll be holding your axe. So get to it! Trees, buildings, rocks ... swing at them all to harvest the materials you need to get building! Practice makes perfect, so build whenever you get the time and opportunity.

5

7

EXPLORE THE ISLAND It doesn’t matter where you land on the map, the chances are you’ll find weapons and golden chests nearby. Thoroughly search the area around you and grab anything that’s useful.

6

KEEP AN EYE ON THE STORM The storm may be terrifying but it’s also quite predictable. Keep an eye on your map during the first moments of the match as it’ll soon show the most direct route to the safe zone. Don’t rush – keep an eye on the countdown and you’ll be fine.

8

GETTING ORGANISED One press of a button will let you organise your inventory. There’s no correct way to do it, but we go with our fave weapons first, and bandages or shields last. Practise switching between them to save valuable time in critical moments. Switching is quicker than reloading ...

FORT_EssentialGuide_INS_FULL.indd 13

NOT ARMED, NOT DANGEROUS One of the first things you need is a weapon. More often than not, you will land close to other players and they’ll be after you. If they find you before you manage to get your hands on a weapon, it will be almost impossible to defend yourself. Be armed!

13 12/09/2018 15:13

GETTING STARTED

USING THE LOBBY Once you’re set up with your very own Epic Games account, you’ll be directed to the Lobby screen. Here, you’ll find gameplay mode settings, daily challenges, progress displays and much more. After you’ve checked out the on-screen info, you’ll be ready for your first Battle Royale. LOCK ’N’ LOAD!

SEASON BOX In every Fortnite Season, you acquire Experience Points (XP) and advance through Season Levels. XP are earned by competing in matches and taking on daily challenges. When you level up, you gain Battle Stars. This box shows your Season Level, how many XP you have and how many you need to reach the next Level. At the launch of a new Season, your Season Level resets.

PASS TIERS This indicates what Tier you are currently on in the Battle Pass (or Free Pass) system. To advance a Tier, you’ll need ten Battle Stars. The display tells you the number of Stars required to move up. As you progress through the Tiers, more rewards will be unlocked.

DAILY CHALLENGES Fortnite’s daily challenges keep players coming back, day after day! Examples include taking out foes with an assault rifle or finishing in the Top 6 in Squads mode. This box tells you how many times you need to complete the challenge and the amount of XP and Battle Stars you’ll receive if you do so. Battle Stars help you move up Tiers, earning you rewards.

SQUAD SLOTS There are four squad ‘slots’ – one for each of the four team members (including yourself) in Squads mode. To team up with friends, click on an empty squad slot and scroll through your Epic Friends list. When you’ve found your pal, send an invite and they’ll appear in the selected slot when they accept.

14 FORT_EssentialGuide_INS_FULL.indd 14

12/09/2018 15:13

GETTING STARTED SETTINGS MENU V-BUCKS & FRIENDS These two panels show you how many V-Bucks you have left to spend (we’ll discuss V-Bucks on page 20) and how many of your Epic Friends are currently online, and therefore available to team up with you in a squad or duo.

This button takes you to the Settings menu, where you can tweak your audio/ visual preferences, including switching off audio chat. You can also customise your controls settings, alter your privacy settings and manage your Epic Friends across multiple platforms and devices.

DID YOU KNOW? You can take out two enemies at once in Duos mo de! When an enemy turns up to rev ive their wounded partner, line them BOTH up in your sig hts and let rip with your guns. BOOM!

MATCH TYPE Select the mode – Solo, Duos or Squads – here. You may also find temporary limited edition modes; some are only around for a few days! You can choose ‘Fill’ or ‘Don’t Fill’ to build a team, but if you select ‘Don’t Fill’ you won’t be teamed up. By selecting ‘Fill’, you’ll be randomly paired up or given three random teammates by Fortnite’s matchmaking system.

TOP TIP

If you MUST have a full-on challenge, or are playing with pals, choose ‘Don’t Fill’. If not, always go for the ‘Fill’ option (see Match Type). The worst case scenario is that randoms will be useless. On the positive side, they could just help you to WIN!

NEWS BUTTON Press this to find out Epic Games’ latest news, including game updates, new modes, weapons, emotes and more.

PLAY BUTTON Hitting the ‘Play’ button transports you to ‘Spawn Island’. While you wait for the Battle Bus to take you to the battlefield, you can loot, shoot, build, run around and dance! You won’t be here long and your activities won’t earn you rewards or affect gameplay. Use this time to practise building structures and tracking your foes.

To the next book in our unofficial but totally essential guide to Fortnite, the Pro Guide. Since the first book came out, Fortnite has only grown in size. Everybody is still playing, from your mates in school to chart-topping rock stars and the game is constantly evolving – rifts opened, a Purple Cube appeared and gave Loot Lake a makeover and Winter arrived. It’s still the same game under all the fancy new changes; you’re still jumping out of the Battle Bus and onto a map filled with 99 other people, hoping to snag that Victory Royale. Speaking of changes, so much has happened since we brought you the last essential guide. The map has gone through several epic shake-ups (See our updated map on page 60); new items and traps have been unleashed and you can now take cute pets into battle with you. In this book we’ll take a look at all the new additions as well as give you some must-have tips for building. We’ll also hand out some ideas on how to work with your friends as part of a team, or play more like the pros. If you want to look great on the battlefield, we’ve got you covered with some of the best skins available and plenty of emotes to pair with them. Join us as we explore the world of Fortnite and take a look at all the amazing moments that have occurred so far. It’s been a great ride and looks to only get better. So, grab your pick-axe, some materials and your favourite weapon and tell us where you’re dropping. Let’s jump in, and don’t forget to thank the driver of the bus! THE TECHNICAL STUFF

EMOTES: EXPRESS YOURSELF! Emotes are a huge part of Fortnite. Everybody’s doing the Floss and you’ll even see it on TV dancing competitions! Whether you’re celebrating a win or taunting a foe, there’s always an emote to fit. With so many emotes available to express yourself, here’s our guide to ten of the very best.

SHOW STOPPER You’ve just found your favourite Epic gun. It’s scored you wins in the past, and maybe it’s been a few games since you last saw it. You want to dance with joy, so shuffling back and forth with Fancy Feet is a sure-fire way to show your excitement! Your player holds their belt and begins kicking their feet out to the sides, one after the other, nodding their head in time with the kicks. ITEM SHOP 500 V-Bucks

DANCE MOVES Taking time out to search for loot in Paradise Palms needs the ideal emote – Hula Dance it is! Drop from the bus, land next to a palm tree, take a break from fighting and sashay from side to side. This is a traditional dance from Hawaii which suits any summer skin, but will make everyone smile if paired with one of the more wacky skins. A perfect comedy Victory Royale!

THE TECHNICAL STUFF

LIVING LARGE A simple emote for the best moments. Instead of leaping into the air in celebration, why not just dust off your hands? This emote suggests that it’s all in a day’s work for you to drop from the Battle Bus and dominate the battlefield. Imagine taking out your opponent with a long-range sniper shot, or outbuilding an enemy, ending in the perfect shotgun win … Job Well Done! ITEM SHOP 200 V-Bucks

INFINITE DAB It starts with a leg jiggle, before sweeping through the belly, chest and arms, isolating the joints and breakdancing onto the battlefield. There’s lots of spinning and kicking up dust with this emote, making it an awesome celebratory dance. Nothing says ‘cool’ or ‘I won’ better than some 1980s’ throwback dancing to end a round or mock your enemy. ITEM SHOP 800 V-Bucks

THE TECHNICAL STUFF

THE TECHNICAL STUFF

TAKE YOUR PET TO WORK The pets might seem like extra fancy back bling, but they add a lot of character to your player. Not only are the crazy cute, but they react to what happens around you! Pets launched in Season Six and began with only three that could be unlocked through the Battle Pass; it all started with a dog, a dragon and a chameleon. While they don’t change any mechanics in the game, they look great and deserve a little space in our book.

UNLOCK:

BATTLE PASS TIER 29

BONESY THE DOG

Bonesy the Dog starts off in an orange colour, but can soon be changed to grey, black and brown through higher tiers. With big bright eyes and a little neck scarf, Bonesy sits in your packpack and will look fierce when you take aim at an enemy, or smile if you nab the Victory Royale. This lively puppy is perfect for active players because, even though he just wants to run around and play, he’s such a good boy really!

UNLOCK:

BATTLE PASS TIER 43

CAMO THE CHAMELEON SCALES THE DRAGON Camo the Chameleon is so cute! Camo reacts much like Bonesy – peering over your shoulder as you look down the rifle scope – but of course, as a chameleon they can change colour and do so to reflect the rarity of the item you collect. Watch as Camo latches onto your back bling with its tail as your drop from the bus, or they dance and clap when things are going well on the battlefield.

Scales the dragon tries their best to look as scary as possible. With big pointy teeth and angry eyes, they’re trying to watch your back, but a tiny dragon like this can only be lovable. Scales comes in three colours; starting with blue, pink and black can be unlocked also. Remember, those wings are only for show and Scales can’t help you if you fall from a great height!

MERRY MUNCHKIN

This limited edition gingerbread pet was only available by completing 14 Days of Fortnite event! Fortnite pets don’t get much sweeter than this.

HAMIREZ

Don’t let her small size fool you – this pet wheel-y wants to be your Battle Royale companion. Unlock her throughout the Season 7 Battle Pass.

UNLOCK:

BATTLE PASS TIER 12

32

REMUS

Watch out if you want to pet this cool character – it’s anything but tame! Hit tier 93 of Season 7’s Battle Pass and you’ll get a slick ice version.

THE TECHNICAL STUFF

WHAT'S YOUR ROLE? How you play Fortnite will be different from how your friends play but each of you can complement the other by learning what your strengths are. Maybe you like to scope out the map for advantages? Or perhaps you like to find the best weapon and start taking out the other teams. You might even be the one who holds onto the med-kits and bandages. What role should you fill?

THE TECHNICAL STUFF

MEDIC Being the medic of your team is risky as it will limit the number of weapons you can carry in order to hold loads of healing items. But it is very rewarding when a teammate is down, and you can swoop in to rescue them. Keep your shields full at all times, in order to soak up damage while healing others.

TIPS TIP 1 - Make sure to focus on bandages, med-kits and keep some shield potions handy. Leave the best guns for your squad but keep an assault rifle or SMG in order to lay down some cover fire when needed.

ASSAULT

TIP 2 - You’ll need some building materials to construct walls around a fallen friend, so practice setting up small bases with speed. Four walls will often be enough, but experiment with ramps and pyramids. Find what works for you.

This role tends to go to those who have no fear in battles between shotguns, or the member who can pin down an enemy with an assault rifle. You’ll need to enter buildings first to check if the coast is clear and will be the first to give chase when the enemy is on the run. This role requires the best loot in order to carry out your attacks.

TIP 3 – Don’t wander off. Stick close to your squad so that you can drop items as they need them or dash in for revive somebody. Call out if you are running low on supplies, then your team can go looting with you.

TIPS TIP 1 - While you might want to rely on your

medic, make sure you have some shield potions and a few bandages – you’re going to get shot at, a lot. Practice lining up your shots as you jump around, try to confuse your opponent.

TIP 2 – Listen to your team. There’s no point

bursting into a building if your scout has seen someone else enter a side door. Perhaps combine with another member and approach a situation from two sides at once.

TIP 3 – Be aware. Listen out for

footsteps or doors being opened and closed around you. Always ask your team where they are and what they can see. Build a picture in your mind of the area.

SUPPORT To play the role of support, you’ll need to be good at everything. You’ll spend time building towers to scout the area for enemies, but also use a sniper rifle to take out people from a distance to watch the backs of teammates. Practice building towers quickly, so you can gain the high ground position when needed.

TIPS TIP 1 - It’s helpful to have an RPG if you can loot one, then you can

fire into a base before your team swarms the enemy. Explosions also create great distractions. Fire to one side while your team approach from the another.

TIP 2 - As a supporting member of the team, you need to think about how you can help situations; maybe using grenades to cause chaos or peppering the area with fire to keep enemies in place. Use your shots to guide the enemy towards where your team lay in wait. TIP 3 – You’ll need a rifle. Looking down its sight is helpful for letting your team know where enemies are, and what weapon they’re using, allowing them to adjust their own immediate tactics! to prepare.

THE TECHNICAL STUFF

TEN EPIC MOMENTS Fortnite has created some great moments. Many of them have changed the map or the way we play. Some brought in millions of players to work together, where others were confusing. The exciting thing is that the game is constantly evolving and introducing awesome changes. We’ve picked out ten of the biggest moments in the life of Fortnite… so far!

1

2

COMET

Season Three had just given us the chance to live out dreams as heroes and villains, but it was only the start of Epic Games introducing proper themes to the seasons. The idea of space and heroic lives gave way to Season Four, which would bring so much carnage! The new season opened with a comet heading to the world of Fortnite and players everywhere wondered what would happen when it landed. Nobody could guess that it was heading for the centre of the map, where Dusty Depot stood.

BATTLE PASS

The introduction of the Battle Pass was a huge shift for Fortnite. The pass brought loads of challenges for you and your mates, it rewarded you with XP boosts, new skins and spray tags plus odd bundles of V-Bucks. Sure, it cost you (or your parents) a bit of money, but the value was enormous. The Battle Pass constantly brings new life to the game, particularly around big celebrations like the first birthday event. There is always a new skin to chase and show off while playing. While the challenges can sometimes be a bit of a distraction, we loved dancing next to massive cakes, shooting clay pigeons and driving through flaming hoops on an ATK.

XP BOOST Make sure to play with your friends if they have a Battle Pass as playing together will give you a nice XP boost. With a few of you together, it’s much faster to unlock those must-have items!

XP

After the comet smashed into the map, the Depot became Dusty Divot and littered the area with space rocks (Hop Rocks). When using the rocks, it changed gravity around your player, making them float around when jumping. It didn’t last long, but the comet brought with it a lot of new ideas and Fortnite was never the same again. We saw areas change and new locations appear, such as Risky Reels, and a villain base was built in Snobby Shores which featured a giant rocket ship!

What's next? Cover treatment: Varnished woodfree paper and 100 foil

In 1782 Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier, French paper manufacturers, made a fascinating discovery. They realised that the hot air from a small fire could make a bag of cloth or paper rise into the air. They began to dream of balloons that could carry people into the sky. The brothers gave a successful public demonstration, flying 300 metres (1000 feet) in a large, unmanned balloon in June 1783, but how could they make sure that humans could survive in the sky? The French King, Louis XVI, suggested experimenting with criminals, but instead the Montgolfiers decided to use animals and launched a balloon carrying a sheep, a duck and a chicken. They thought the sheep would be affected in the same way as a human. The duck should be unharmed, as ducks fly at high altitude and the chicken didn’t usually get far off the ground, so its reaction to high flight might provide interesting information. The animals returned , baffled but unharmed, from a 3 kilometre (2 mile) flight in front of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette at Versailles on 19 September 1783. It was time for the first human aeronaut to lift off . . .

The 11 th Century

We all have dreams where we can fly. We soar and hover like birds, and then we wake up – safely on the ground. For centuries before the Montgolfiers, people risked their lives trying take to the skies – some with more success than others.

3. Eilmer of Malmesbury was an 11th century monk who made wings and launched himself from the tower of Malmesbury Abbey in Wiltshire, England. He apparently glided 200m (660ft) before crash-landing and breaking both legs.

2.

The 19th Century

5. Jules Henri Giffard built and flew a steam-powered airship in 1852. This was the first powered flight. Giffard travelled 27 kilometres (16 miles). 6. Otto Lilienthal, the ‘Glider King’ built and flew his first glider in 1891. He made over 2000 flights in his gliders, and flew further and for longer than anyone had before. He was the first person to realise that a curved wing surface would provide more lift than a flat one – a discovery still used in modern planes.

5. 3.

1.

6.

Ancient Greece

1. The idea of human flight even appears in Greek mythology. According to legend, Daedalus was an inventor who made wax and feather wings for himself and his son, Icarus. He warned Icarus not to fly too high, or the heat of the sun would melt the wax. Icarus ignored the advice and fell to his death.

The 5th Century bc

2. Kites were invented and flown in China from the 5th century bc. They were originally used for military purposes such as signalling. and some were supposedly large enough to lift people – the first human flight we know of. There are reports that archers were lifted on kites so they could shoot at enemy soldiers. Enforced flights on man-carrying kites also provided an unusual form of punishment.

The 15th–16th Centuries

4. Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Renaissance artist and inventor, studied birds and how they flew and designed many flying machines including gliders and parachutes. The best known is the ornithopter – a machine meant to be operated by a man flapping artificial wings. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that he ever built one.

4.

Kites, balloons and gliders were all very well, but if humans were going to fly properly, they needed more reliable and controllable aircraft in which to do so, which meant powered heavier-than-air craft. Kites and balloons were heavier than air of course, but they were at the mercy of the wind and couldn’t be steered independently of it. In the 19th century, inventors like Otto Lilienthal made great progress in understanding the principles of flight, but powered flight was still a dream. Samuel Langley built a steam-powered model aircraft which flew successfully, but a steam engine powerful enough for a full-sized plane was much too heavy to get off the ground, and the petrol-driven internal combustion engine, invented in 1877, was still in its infancy. And then, one day in 1878, Milton Wright, a clergyman from Indiana, brought a toy ‘helicopter’ home to his sons, Wilbur and Orville Wright. From that day, the Wright brothers became obsessed with flying machines, using money from their bicycle repair business to fund their inventions. At first they built gliders, but unlike other ‘birdmen’ they realised that birds change the angle of their wings to control their flight. From this they developed the three-axis control system – a revolutionary invention that could control movement in all three dimensions and is still used to control aircraft. The three-axis control system: 1. Pitch axis – the nose of the aircraft can move up or down 2. Yaw axis – the nose of the aircraft can move from side to side 3. Roll axis – the wing tips can move up or down

early aviators The Wright Brothers had proved that powered flight was possible, and suddenly everyone wanted to fly. The first half of the 20th century saw records for speed and distance set and broken almost monthly. The men and women who were the pioneers of aviation became international celebrities.

It works! . . . and between 1900 and 1902 they trialed a series of kites and man-carrying gliders to test their designs.

Look! They twist their wings!

Loui s Blér iot

Let me make a sketch.

Orville and Wilber Wright wanted to build a flying machine. They studied nature . . . On 14 December, 1903 at Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brother’s airoplane took off.

Wish me luck!

Next time you can be on board!

Now we just need an engine.

In 1909, Blériot was the first person to cross the English Channel in a plane. He was also a successful aircraft designer and manufacturer and invented the first practical car headlamp.

BUT THEN ...

Orville and Wilber were undeterred. Three days later on 17 December, 1903. . .

Lived: 1872–1936 From: Cambrai, France Plane flown: Type XI Monoplane

. . . but the Wright brothers had made history.

. . . they made their first flight. It lasted just 12 seconds and they travelled 40 m (120 ft) . . .

They had made the first manned, powered, sustained and controlled flight

The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, in 1932. In 1937 she set off to fly round the world but disappeared without trace while flying over the Pacific. Her fate remains a mystery.

John Alcock and Arthur Brown

Lived: 1892–1919 (Alcock); 1886–1948 (Brown) From: Manchester, England (Alcock); Glasgow, Scotland (Brown) Plane flown: Vickers Vimy

Alcock and Brown made the first nonstop transatlantic flight, in June 1919, from Newfoundland to Ireland, where they crash landed in a bog. Alcock was a pilot in the First World War and died in a flying accident in France in 1919. Brown joined the Royal Flying Corps and survived the war despite twice being shot down. He trained RAF pilots in World War II.

Bessie Coleman ‘Queen Bess’

Lived: 1892–1926 From: Texas, United States Plane flown: JN-4 ‘Jenny’ Biplane

The first African-American woman and the first woman of Native American descent to gain a pilot’s licence. She wasn’t allowed to study aviation in the United States in the 1920s because she was black, so got her pilot’s licence in France. She returned to the United States and became a stunt flyer, but died in 1926 when her mechanic crashed their plane.

N otable A ircraft When the Wright brothers made the first controlled flight of a heavier-than-air craft that could take off under its own power, the age of aviation began. The first half of the 20th century brought rapid advances in aircraft design. New technologies like rocket engines and supersonic flight would prove vital in the development of spacecraft.

1952

The de Havilland Comet was the first commercial passenger-carrying jet. Jet engines allowed higher and faster flights to be made over long distances.

1947 The Bell X-1 – first supersonic 1890 Clement Ader, in his steampowered monoplane Éole, became the first person to make a powered take-off and ‘hop’ of 50m (160ft), although he had no way to control his craft in the air or when landing.

1909 The Blériot Type XI monoplane, a wood and fabric single-seater, became the first plane to cross the English Channel. This caused great demand for the plane, and over 100 were sold for civil and military use.

aircraft. Achieving supersonic speeds (faster than the speed of sound – (around 1235 km/h or 767 mph) showed that humans could survive very high speeds and g-forces.

1913 The Silorsky Ilya Murometz was the first plane designed to carry paying passengers. During testing, it flew from St Petersburg to Kiev - a whopping 1200km (750mi). It never entered commercial service, but was converted for use as a bomber at the outbreak of the First World War,

1943 Messerschmidt Me 163 Komet – the first mass produced rocket-powered plane. Rocket powered planes can fly at much higher altitudes than jet aircraft, because they don’t depend on a supply of oxygen to make the engines work.

1915 The Junkers J1 or ‘Tin Donkey’ was the first all-metal aircraft. Until then, planes had been made of fabric stretched over wooden frames.

1938 The Boing 307 was the first passenger aircraft with a pressurised cabin, which allowed it to fly at higher altitudes.

The Worry Box Suzanne Chiew Julian, Sean

Murray Bear has lots of worries. What if the waterfall he’s visiting is too loud? What if he’s not very good at climbing? And what if all his friends laugh at him? With the help of his sister, Milly, Murray makes a special box in which to keep all his worries. But can the worry box really help? With wonderfully soft illustrations from Sean Julian (I'll Love You For Ever, A Friend Like You, Bear Can't Sleep!), this is the perfect book for children dealing with anxiety or feeling nervous about starting at a new school or nursery.

A wonderful picture book from Suzanne Chiew and Sean Julian - now available in paperback! Perfect for children coping with anxiety surrounding making new friends and dealing with new experiences, such as starting at a new school or nursery.

“I don’t want to go!” snuffled Murray. “What if the waterfall’s too LOUD? What if it’s so BIG that I get whooshed away?”

Milly squeezed Murray tight. “Waterfalls are big and loud,” she said. “But they’re also beautiful.” “I won’t get whisked away?” asked Murray. “Not with me to hold your paw,” said Milly firmly. Murray thought for a moment then nodded. “Sharing worries always makes them feel smaller,” Milly comforted as they headed for home.

“Worries won’t stop me!” cheered Murray, popping his worry in the box and shutting the lid tight. “Ready?” Milly asked. “Ready!” nodded Murray.

When the very last sandwich was eaten, Milly had a secret to share. “This is my worry box,” she smiled. “When something’s worrying me, I write it down, then I put it inside.” “Does it make your worries disappear?” asked Murray. “Not quite,” said Milly. “But when my worries are in the box they don’t stop me having fun. Let’s make one for you.”

Skipping along the riverbank, the bears spotted dragonflies dancing above their heads. But soon the river raced faster, and there was a roar of water ahead. “Nearly there,” said Milly. “Eeek,” Murray squeaked as they rounded the bend.

Features fabulous die-cut cover and flaps throughout. With a strong environmental message, this is the perfect book for encouraging little ones to think about issues of conservation and protecting our natural world. Quirky illustrations from Stephen Bennett and a hilarious text from Lula Bell bring this adventure to life!

They decided that the bravest and cleverest minibeasts should search for the bees.

I’m clever.

Folks, this is not the time to panic.

I’m brave.

I’M PANICKING!!

I’m slimy. Someone has to find the bees.

They must be at the vegetable patch. Let’s go!

And bring them home!

Oh dearie me! No bees means no broccoli for dinner.

YAY! Do you ever stop eating?

I’m a very hungry caterpillar.

Please find the bees!

This search is fruit-ile.

No. I’m a caterpillar. Bees have wings.

Bleurgh! Brown leaves taste horrid.

The day grew hotter and hotter, but still there was no sign of the bees. “They must be hiding underground,” panted Beetle. So they scampered and searched in the cool, damp leaf litter.

Hey! A bumblebee nest. The bees must be here. I’m sure of it!

There’s something moving over there. It’s probably going to eat me.

I may love honey, but I’m a moth! Bees have smooth antennae. Mine are feathery.

Boo! Eek!

Just awful.

Terrible day, isn’t it?

Look, I’ve grown frog legs.

Not fair! I want legs too.

Shush! You’ll grow them soon.

Volcanoes Volcanoes occur where hot liquid rock pushes up through the Earth’s crust and bursts out as an eruption. Boiling hot lava trails down the volcano’s side burning everything in sight, and the most violent eruptions can fling ash, gas and boulders high into the sky! There are about 500 active volcanoes in the world. These are all volcanoes which have erupted at least once in recent history. If a volcano hasn’t erupted for thousands of years but could erupt again in the future, it is called a dormant volcano. If scientists think it hasn’t erupted for more than 10,000 years and will never erupt again, it is classified as an extinct volcano.

Lava flow

Geyser

A geyser is a spring of hot water and gas, heated by volcanic activity.

Lava can travel downhill faster than a person can run!

Fumarole

This is a gap where hot gas leaks through the crust.

Evacuate!

People living near a volcano can study it to tell when it is about to erupt. They must be ready to evacuate in a hurry.

Submarine volcano

Around two-thirds of the world’s volcanoes can’t be seen because they are underwater. These are called submarine volcanoes.

Farming land

The land around volcanoes is usually fertile because of all the minerals in ash and lava. People often farm there, despite the dangers of living beside a volcano!

Main vent

This is the place where lava bursts through the Earth’s crust.

Epicentre This is the point above an earthquake’s starting point.

Magma

Hypocentre This is the exact point underground where a volcano starts.

Molten, liquid rock inside the Earth is called magma. When it reaches the Earth’s surface, it is called lava.

Volcanic vent

Pillow lava

Underwater eruptions create lumpy looking pillow lava. When lava settles on the ocean floor it can build up to make underwater mountains, or islands that poke above the waves.

Magma chamber

The area where magma collects beneath a volcano is called a magma chamber.

Avalanche

Mountains

Occasionally, snow piled up on mountains suddenly slips off, tumbling downhill at great speed. Avalanches can knock down trees and bury whole villages!

Snow line

High mountains have snow and ice at their peak all year round – even in summer. The place where this starts is called the snow line.

Mountains are huge rocky features, towering high over the surface of the Earth. Most formed over millions of years as tectonic movements crumpled rocks in the Earth’s crust. Their jagged peaks and steep slopes were then slowly carved out by the erosive forces of wind, rain and ice. Higher and steeper than hills, mountains are usually at least 600m tall. The highest of them all is Mt Everest, looming 8,850m above sea level. It is part of the Himalayan mountain range. Chains of mountains like these cover around 20 per cent of our planet’s surface!

Skiing

Mountain weather

Mountain slopes are popular holiday destinations, as they offer hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

Mountaineering

Mountains are often covered in clouds and have lots of rain.

Some mountains can only be climbed by experts, using equipment such as ice picks, crampon shoes and safety harnesses. Mountaineers face many hazards as they climb, including blizzards and falling rocks.

Mountains are so big they can block rain so that one side of a mountain experiences much more rain than the other side!

Peak

The mountain’s highest point is its peak, or summit. On high mountains, it is an area of bare rock and snow, but on lower peaks it can still be grassy.

Base

The bottom of the mountain is called the base. Mountains’ heights are measured from sea level rather than from their base.

Pyroclastic flow

Sometimes a fast cloud of very hot air, ash and rocks bursts out of a volcano, travelling at speeds of up to 200km/h and destroying everything in its path.

Fold mountain

The most common type of mountains, these occur when huge layers of rock crash together making the plates buckle or fold – a bit like folding a piece of cloth. Fold mountains create long chains of mountains, like the Himalayas.

Cone-shaped

Over many eruptions, layers of lava and ash build up to create a cone-shaped volcano.

Block mountain

Also known as fault mountains, these occur where there is a crack, or fault, in the Earth’s crust. The crust splits into blocks, which are pushed up or down by the movement of tectonic plates. Block mountains usually have a steep front and a sloping back.

Dome mountain

Dome mountains form where magma pushes up against Earth’s crust, making it swell into a dome shape. The magma doesn’t break the surface (as it would at a volcano), but instead gradually hardens into rock. Eventually the mountain’s outer layer is worn away, revealing the dome-shaped rock beneath.

Build-up to eruption

Long before an eruption, magma starts to gather in the magma chamber under a volcano. It builds in pressure until it reaches bursting point and erupts through the main vent.

Accumulation zone

The starting point of a glacier is a high, cold place where snow can build up without melting.

Moraine

As a glacier moves, it pulls grit and soil with it. This piles up in ridges called moraines along the glacier’s edges.

Glaciers Glaciers are huge masses of ice, which form over hundreds of years as snow piles into layers and gets squeezed together. Some glaciers are like icy rivers winding downhill, while others cover huge areas of land or stretch over the sea. Although glaciers are made of solid ice, they move very slowly as they are pulled along by their own weight. Moving glaciers drag rock and earth along with them – like sandpaper, this wears away the land around it. Eventually the glacier will come to a halt when it reaches warmer lands and melts, or if it gets to the sea and breaks up into icebergs.

Advance and retreat

Most glaciers move, or ‘advance’, at a pace of about 1m a day. If a glacier melts faster than it can move, it is called a ‘retreating’ glacier.

Tributary glacier

Tributaries are small glaciers that merge with a larger one.

Terminus

The terminus (or snout) is where the glacier finally stops – either when it melts or when it reaches the sea. It is like a high, icy cliff.

Tidewater glacier

Glaciers that reach the sea break up into small icebergs which float away and eventually melt.

Meltwater streams

When a glacier melts, its meltwater pools into lakes or runs off in narrow streams. Meltwater is usually bright blue.
